From The President Well there was no easing into winter this year in Manitoba with an abrupt introduction the week of AgEx. After a hot dry summer resulting in drought, we have received some fall rains and now snowfall so there is hope for greener pastures in 2024. The 50th Manitoba AgEx was held the week of October 23-29th in Brandon. It was the biggest show in recent history with over 600 head participating, hosting 5 national shows. The Limousin breed has not been active in the show since 2019 and thanks to the efforts of Laura Seward recruiting breeders to the show, Limousin was once again present in the barns. Diamond T Limousin, Pine Creek Limousin, Eden Meadows Farms, NYK Cattle Company, Maplehurst Limousin and Amaglen Limousin brought in an excellent group of cattle to showcase our breed. Cynthia Wirgau of Maple Grove Gelbvieh sorted the cattle in the Limousin Open Show and John Hogberg judged the Limousin Junior Show while Garrett Leibreich judged the Open Junior Showmanship. It was a fabulous week of good Limousin cattle and good Limousin people. (see AgEx report for more details). Thank you to Kyle Wright for his many years of dedication as our breed director for AgEx and his efforts to make this show a success. Also thank you to Sara Hepper for assisting with Barn Boss duties throughout the week. And a huge thank you to the many sponsors and the fantastic group of breeders who came out to represent our breed. We’re already looking forward to AgEx 2024! There are 8 Limousin bulls that weighed in on test at the Manitoba Bull Test Station at Douglas, MB. Their progress can be followed at www.manitobabulltest.com. There will also be many bulls for sale by private treaty in the coming months. Although there are no female sales this fall in the province, there are several breeders selling females by private treaty and in the Western Select. The Manitoba Limousin AGM will be held January 6th at the Canad Inn in Brandon Manitoba at 1:00 pm. We encourage in person participation but we will again be offering a Zoom component to the meeting. Memberships need to be paid by the end of the year to have voting privileges at this meeting. The MLA will be invoicing members who had a membership in 2023, but please reach out to a board member if you wish to purchase a membership in 2024. We are very proud of our MJLA and their efforts to reorganize the association and are looking forward to this group moving into the future! We hope everyone continues to see great prices for their calves and that the fall run of shows and sales continues to go well. PREG-CHECKING
In A Drought Year With High Cull Cow Prices In the dynamic world of cattle production, producers constantly face challenges that test their resilience. One such challenge for many beef producers this year is drought and higher feed costs. When water becomes scarce, pastures are stressed and the costs of maintaining a herd can surge.
The model assumes the initial cow weight is at 1,298 lbs, which has been rounded up to 1,300 lbs for this example. Assuming the cow gains 0.5/lb/day during the 160-day winter-feeding period with body weight increases 80 lbs, from 1,300 lbs to about 1,380 lbs, the market value of this cow would increase from $1,869 to $2,085/head, or a $216 increase as a result of seasonally higher prices and heavier weight.
In drought conditions, every mouth to feed counts. Producers may be forced to reduce their herd size to sustain the remaining animals. In such situations, making wellinformed decisions is critical for the economic viability of an operation. By preg-checking and identifying open cows, producers can choose to cull those open cows early, reduce the herd’s overall feed requirements and minimize additional costs associated with keeping the open animals.
By culling in September instead of March, there would be a potential forgone revenue of $216 per cow. However, considering the $400/cow feed cost savings from culling open cows early, the net gain from preg-checking and culling in the fall is still $184 per open cow compared to not preg-checking and feeding through the winter.
Below are a few different preg-checking examples. Producers are encouraged to use the BCRC Economics of Pregnancy Testing Calculator to work through their own scenarios. Assuming the average daily cost to maintain a cow is at $2.50/cow/day and the winter-feeding period is 160 days, the savings from culling an open cow in the fall after preg-checking total $400/cow, compared to maintaining her for the winter. Cow prices typically rise 5% from September to March (10-year average). In mid-September 2023, Alberta D2 cow prices averaged $1.44/lb, making the projected price for March 2024 around $1.51/lb.
For a 100-head cow herd with an 8% open rate and a $5/head cost to preg-check, the overall gain from pregchecking is $10 per cow across the herd. For a higher-cost producer with $3/cow/day feed cost during the winter, the estimated benefit of pregchecking is more significant at $16/cow or $1,613.33 for the whole herd.
Preg-check and feed open cows separately Beef producers who are less impacted by drought or producers with sufficient feed could consider another strategy: preg-check and feed open cows as a separate group for future marketing. By feeding the groups separately, producers can place the open cows on a high-energy ration for additional weight gain. With record high cull cow prices, the increased value for cull cows during the feeding period could make overwintering a financially attractive option, as every additional pound is worth more.
In this example, assume open cows were separated from the bred cows and receive a higher-energy ration until March, with a targeted average daily gain of 1.5 lbs/day at a cost of $2.50/cow/day. The value of the open cow rises from $1,869 in September to $2,350/head in March, accounting for both the seasonal price increase and the additional weight gain. This translates to a $265 increase per open cow compared to not preg-checking and culling in the spring.
For a 100-head cow herd with an 8% open rate, implementing pregnancy checks and separate feeding would yield a profit of $14 per cow across the entire herd, compared to not preg-checking and selling in the spring. However, for a higher-cost producer at $3/cow/day to feed this open cow group, the profit for feeding them separately dropped to $7/cow for the overall herd. As for a lower productive group with an average daily gain at 1 lb/cow/day, the profit would drop to $4/cow. With record high cull cow prices, the increased value for cull cows during the feeding period could make overwintering a financially attractive option, as every additional pound is worth more.
Bottom Line In a drought year with elevated wintering costs, preg-checking may be a smart economic strategy for producers. Using practices such as identifying and culling open cows early, optimizing nutrition and capitalizing on high cull cow prices, producers can navigate through the challenging time. Just like any other marketing strategy, there is no one-size-fit-all approach. It is crucial that producers explore different options and adapt the plan according to market situations to find a strategy that aligns with their production systems. “Hi everyone! I’m Jocelyn Kennedy and I am the 2023/24 CJLA President! I am from Omemee, ON where my family and I own and operate Crown Hill Acres. I’m 18 years old, and I go to school at the University of Guelph where I am getting my Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Food and Agricultural Business. This is my 5th year on the board, and I’m super excited for this upcoming year. I am also on the Ontario Junior Limousin Association, where I currently also serve as President. I have been heavily involved in the Limousin breed showing for the past 9 years, and serving on the National and Provincial boards since 2019. As for my favourite movie, it’s for sure Cars. I’m super excited to serve as president for this upcoming year and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at events throughout the year!”

Filling the position of secretary will be Lillian Seward, Vice President will be Madison Nykoliation and at this time the finances will be overseen by the MLA treasurer. Another Year, Another Huge Success Hello everyone, Hope you all are having a great fall. This year was the 50th anniversary of Ag Ex and what a great turn out. A BIG THANK YOU goes again to Laura Seward for her hard work and determination to have a limo show at Ag Ex. I would like to thank Amanada Seward and Sara Hepper for being the barn bosses for the week while I was busy at work and could only get there for parts of the week. Next, I would like to thank all the sponsors for sponsoring all the classes, with out your generous support events like this could not happen, also I would like to thank all the exhibitors (Diamond T Limousin, Pine Creek Limousin, Amaglen Limousin, Eden Meadows Limousin, and NYK Cattle) with out folks like these there wouldn’t have been any limo cattle at Ag Ex. From The General Manager This fall I was fortunate to attended Pinnacle View’s Open House and Junior event. I would like to give special recognition to the Swann and Kishkan families for putting on a professional, well-organized event that attracted 70 juniors from BC and Alberta. Limousin cattle may be the center of what we do but it’s the skillset and the friendships that are formed along the way that make the breed special. Thank you for the work you are doing to develop the next generation of breeders and show competitors. We have partnered again with Neogen Canada to offer another genomics project to help offset the cost of DNA. The Limousin Forward Project is now open to bulls and females 24 months of age and younger to complete a 100K test for $35. This testing is offered on a first come first serve basis. Qualifying animals that completed 100K testing between August 4 th and now will receive a $10 credit on the members CLA account. We recognized that a number of show and sale animals had DNA completed during this time and would like to recognized those animals under the project. Members far exceeded the original number of head goals during the last Limousin Legacy Project. For many completing DNA has become a normal operating process and we hope to see the same positive results from the Limousin Forward Project.
The CLA Board of Directors continue to meet the last Tuesday of each month. This regular meeting time is proving to be successful in moving projects along and responding to member requests. The board is currently looking to the general membership to fill seats on the Ad-Hoc committees. There are positions open on the following committees, Breed Improvement, Registry, Commercial and Promotions Committees. Please reach out to a board member or me if you are interested or have questions about the roles of committee members. With the current economic times the board has voted to hold their winter meeting online this year rather than incurring travel costs to meet in person. A group of board members will be taking part in the Canadian Beef Breeds Council Annual General Meeting at Agribition. It has been over a decade since prices were increased in the registry and unfortunately 2024 there will be a new fee schedule released. Members will see an increase to Whole Herd Enrollment (WHE) from $25 to $30 a head. We will also be moving to a once-a-year payment of WHE fees that will be due annually in February. Members will have the option to apply for a payment plan where fees will be divided equally between payments in February and September. There will also be increases to members who use the non- WHE registration options. The 2024 fee schedule will be sent out to members by email, mail and will be available online. After such great weather this fall it’s hard to accept that winter is now here. Thoughts turn to the end of year and prioritizing for the association needs for 2024. We are happy to be offering Limousin branded merchandise for all your Christmas shopping needs this year. LIMOUSIN Footprints We would like to extend our sincerest sympathies to the Sangster, Best and Nykoliation families in the passing of Marg Sangster in July. Marg and Ron ran MRS Limousin and were instrumental in the success of the breed in the 70s, 80s and 90s both provincially and on a national level. There are many wonderful Limousin memories involving them over the years and she will be truly missed.
