Brodie & Kiera Hunter

MARRIED SEPTEMBER 27, 2024

(Hope you enjoyed the honey moon at AG-EX)

SOLID Congratulations

Packages of bred females available. Private treaty bred heifers or young proven cows. Give us a call to put a group together. If you’re interested in some bull shopping before year end, we are developing another solid set of herdsires. (Avoid the tax man after selling those high priced limo calves!)

Travis & Rilla Dillon & Morgan Brodie & Kiera

From The President

It has been a great summer and fall for cattle in Manitoba! There is truly not a lot to complain about in the cattle business these days; record prices, great summer and fall grass, abundant feed for the winter and a beautiful fall this far. It’s a great time to be in the cattle business!

We have just returned from a week at Ag Ex where the quality of Limousin cattle on display was second to none. I strongly believe in Limousin cattle and what they have to offer the beef industry but I also do have to say the best thing about this breed is truly the people. What an amazing group of like minded breeders who spent the week supporting each other and showing what Manitoba Limousin has to offer. A huge thank you to our MLA representative on the AgEx board, Brady Daniel for his planning, management of the show and gathering of sponsorship and to everyone else who made this show a success. Also, a huge shout out to all of the sponsors who support our show and the breeders bringing their cattle out.

We also have seen a strong market for Limousin calves this summer and fall especially in online presort sales. It is awesome to see this premium for Limo calves, we know we are raising a premium product but it is so rewarding to see the industry rewarding this. Congratulations to the Manitobans who have received these premiums for their Limo and Limo cross calves.

There are 11 Limousin bulls on test at the Manitoba Bull Test Station at Douglas Manitoba. Their progress can be followed at www.manitobabulltest.com. Also keep a look out as there will also be many bulls for sale by private treaty in the coming months.

Be sure to watch for our Manitoba breeders who have consigned females to the Western Select Sale which is a DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auction beginning on December 11 and ending on December 12 with consignments from all across the prairie provinces.

Please join us January 4 at 1:00pm at the Canad Inn for our MLA AGM. All Limousin enthusiasts are welcome. To have voting privileges, we ask that you send your membership of $25 by December 31 by either e-transferring manitoblimousinassoc@gmail.com or mailing a check to the Manitoba Limousin Association Box 92 Minto Manitoba R0K 1M0. We encourage you to attend so you can be a part of the Limousin breed’s future in Manitoba. If you cannot attend in person please email amandajhs78@gmail.com and I will send you a Zoom link. We will be meeting for lunch just prior to the meeting.

We hope everyone continues to see continued great prices for their calves and that the fall run of shows and sales continues to go well. Remember if you cannot make it to these shows and sales in person, that many are broadcast on DLMS or other online platforms. Wishing everyone well this fall and as we transition into winter and the holiday season.

2024 AMBASSADOR

Each year the Manitoba Limousin Association recognizes a commercial cattle producer or Limousin seedstock producer for their contribution to the cattle industry using Limousin genetics.

Amaglen Limousin of Darlingford Manitoba was chosen as the 2024 Manitoba Limousin Ambassador. Amaglen is a 3 generation Limousin operation. Although cattle have been in the family for more than 5 generations, Ian and Bonnie Hamilton purchased their first Limousin genetics and founded Amaglen Limousin in 1982. The operation continues with the involvement of Amanda, Clint, Laura and Lillian Seward.

many years.

Both Ian and Bonnie were very involved in provincial and national Limousin associations and events. Ian served several terms on the Manitoba Limousin Association. He was the Secretary for 6 years and also served as the Bull Test Station Rep, Vice President and President. Bonnie was active on the Manitoba Limouselles and was the Treasurer for many years. She, with the help of a few local ladies, created a beautiful quilt to sell by auction at the 1987 National Convention in Brandon to raise funds for the event. While Ian and Bonnie did not venture too far from home they did attend many National Shows, CLA Annual meetings and sales across the country, ventured to Agribiton several times and attended the International Limousin Congress in Calgary. Ian also attended Wulf Limousin’s sales for

Ian served 2 terms (6 years) on the Canadian Limousin Association. Two notable achievements while on the CLA were being the driving force behind implementing the docility and scrotal EPDs while the Breed Improvement Chair and creating the Membership Committee which he also chaired to improve the membership’s experience as CLA members.

Ian was also passionate about the Manitoba Bull Test Station and represented the Limousin breed both on the board and as a consignor having many successes for the Limousin breed at the test station including the highest indexing and highest selling bull of all breeds back when there were over 600 bulls of all breeds on test.

Ian and Bonnie’s children, Amanda and Glen, the namesakes of the operation, were actively involved in 4-H and the Manitoba Junior Limousin Association. They showed at many local summer fairs, junior shows and a few times at AgEx and the Manitoba Royal Winter Fair. Ian was a leader and Bonnie was also very involved in the club.

Amaglen has been committed to breed improvement

over the years by entering all data possible on their herd achieving Canadian Limousin Platinum Elite Herd Status. They have also committed to the Limousin Legacy project and have DNA parent verified their entire herd. They also are involved in other data collection methods such as carcass ultrasounds. They have raised some Canadian Limousin Elite and Super Elite Dams. They have always been committed to getting involved in things that can both improve and sustain the cattle in their own herd and the breed at large.

Ian and Bonnie were awarded the Canadian Limousin Association 2018 Award of Distinction for being strong believers in the Limousin breed and promoting the breed locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. And even at 42 years in, you would be hard pressed to find a couple that are more passionate about the breed and willing to “talk cows”. Ian is like an encyclopedia of Limousin pedigrees from the beginning.

The next generations of Amaglen are continuing that passion for the breed. Amanda has sat on the Manitoba Limousin Association since 2019 and is currently in her second year as the president. She has also taken an active role with the Manitoba News and Views and Juniors and is the 4-H Director.

Amaglen had the honour of representing the Manitoba Beef Producers in their Field to Fork commercial for CTV in the summer of 2023 showcasing the Manitoba beef industry while representing the Limousin breed.

Laura and Lillian were instrumental in reviving the Manitoba Junior Limousin Association which had sat dormant for several years. Laura is the President of this association while Lillian is the Secretary. Laura is also serving her second year on the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and is currently the Press Reporter. The girls attended the Canadian Junior Limousin Association Impact Show this past summer where they both were very successful in the Intermediate category.

The girls also decided in 2023 that it was time that the Limousin breed was back being represented in the barns at AgEx. Due to lack of numbers there had been a few years in which the show was unable to get enough Limousin cattle to warrant a show. Laura started calling and texting individuals recruiting for the show and we were able to have a show in 2023 and now again in 2024. The Seward girls are passionate about showing cattle and have been representing the Limousin breed at shows like Manitoba Youth RoundUp and have been named the Premier Exhibitor and Breeder in 2023 and 2024 at AgEx!

Congratulations Amaglen!

MANITOBA JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION

At this year’s CJLA Impact show, held in Lindsay, Ontario, we had record breaking attendance both with Juniors and cattle. During the show week our 2024-2025 board was established, this years board consists of our President, Jocelyn Kennedy, our Vice President, Megan Conners, our Secretary, Shannon Gibson, our Treasurer, Carly Arnold, our Press Reporter, Laura Seward as well as the directors at large; Taylor Annett, Carson Zwambag, Emma Qually and Cedar Hayne. Our board is represented from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia!

After the Impact, our board has focused on creating new and exciting opportunities for the Juniors. We sent out a CJLA member survey to see how we can further grow in our opportunities and we chose to enter all members who filled out the survey into a draw for a prize pack. Holt Haywood of Highland Stock Farms was our winner. Moving into the end of October, our annual scholarship and Australian Exchange application were due. We highly recommend applying to these opportunities. The Australian Exchange consists of a $1000 travel bursary and the scholarships vary on how the board feels they should be paid out each year.

Our latest and newest opportunity is the CJLA Junior Enthusiast of the Year Award, this is to be awarded to an active CJLA member who passionately represents the Limousin breed through their involvement, knowledge, sportsmanship and positive attitude. Nominations will be completed through a google form linked on all CJLA social media accounts or the CLA website. Anyone can nominate a CJLA member, it does not need to be a Junior. . Nominations are anonymous and are due December 1st,

After Christmas, we will be sharing about the 2025 Rising Stars Conference as details are yet to be determined. We will also have more information about our Herd Building Incentive Program which will be announced at a later date. The 2025 CJLA Impact Show will be held in Swift Current Saskatchewan. Feed quality, testing & analysis for beef cattle

When you don’t know the quality of feed on an operation, maintaining animal health and welfare can become significantly more difficult. Visual assessment of feedstuffs is not accurate enough to access quality and may lead to cows being underfed and losing body condition, or wasting money on expensive supplements that aren’t necessary.

Understanding the quality of the feed being fed on a beef cattle operation is paramount to maintaining animal health and welfare. Visual assessment of feedstuffs is not an accurate means to assess quality and may lead to cows being underfed and losing body condition or result in overspending on expensive supplements that aren’t necessary. It is recommended that producers test feeds prior to feeding to ensure that the cattle nutritional requirements will be met.

Why Should I Feed Test?

Sampling recommendations for fresh silage:

• Avoid sneaky production problems, such as poor gains or reduced conception caused by mineral or nutrient deficiencies or excesses;

• Prevent or identify potentially devastating problems due to toxicity from mycotoxins, nitrates, sulfates, or other minerals or nutrients;

• Develop appropriate rations that meet the nutritional needs of their beef cattle;

• Identify nutritional gaps that may require supplementation;

• Economize feeding, and possibly make use of opportunities to include diverse ingredients;

• Accurately price feed for buying or selling.

Feed testing is an important tool when tackling feed management. The following webinars address the key challenges and opportunities surrounding feed testing, what the results mean and why they can be a key tool on your operation.

Meeting Nutrient Requirements for Cattle

The main reason producers should test their feed is to ensure they are meeting the nutritional needs of their livestock. Nutritional needs vary greatly depending on stage and age of cattle and whether you are growing, finishing, breeding, or maintaining cattle. Body condition score, hide thickness, and hair coat can affect nutrient requirements of cattle, as can weather conditions like precipitation, temperature and wind speed, or environmental factors such as mud depth, bunk space, or other factors. An example of nutrient requirements for cows compared to bred heifers is in the following table. A common rule of thumb is 55-60-65 and 7-9-11 for the percentages of TDN and CP, respectively, required by a beef cow in early-, mid-, and late-gestation.

Season’s GREETINGS

Hard to believe another summer has passed and the fall work is in full swing. There is nothing like this time of year, the smell in the air, the dust at sunset and the calves bawling from the corrals, freshly weaned! Its not easy and a lot of blood, sweat and tears go into this lifestyle but at the end of the day, it is the best industry to be in.

We would like to congratulate all juniors and the show committee for an outstanding Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show in Lindsay, Ontario. There were 73 juniors, and 112 cattle exhibited from 5 provinces! It will go down as one of our most successful junior shows to date! Those who were fortunate enough to participate saw enthusiastic juniors catching up with their friends from last year and enjoying the fun filled 4 days of activities. Thank you to the show committee, volunteers, sponsors and parents for making this show happen and making it a great success. Mark your calendars for the 2025 CJLA Impact Show that will be held in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on August 6-9!

The Canadian Limousin Association has hired the very talented Jill Renton of Gone West Media as Publisher of the Limousin Voice magazine. Her vision and drive to support the Limousin breed and design the newly branded magazine for 2024 will be highly anticipated by our members. The Limousin Voice has been recognized as one of the most impressive breed publications in Canada and we truly believe Jill, with her new vision, will exceed the expectations of the board and our members! The Canadian Limousin Association would like to sincerely thank Tessa Verbeek for her 9+ years of service to the breed.  As the Limousin Voice Editor, teamed with Katie Songer, you created a magazine that was recognized industry wide. Your leadership and experience will be missed in your role with both the magazine and association. Thank you, Tessa!

The Beef Improvement Federation Symposium was held in Knoxville, Tennessee, from June 10- 12th with Michael Machan, Chad Homer, David Lawerence, Erin Kishkan, Jean Macaulay, Ashton Hewson and Laura Ecklund present representing the Canadian Limousin Association. Three days were spent at the University of Tennessee listening to speakers and having conversations around “Building a better cow”. The conference was informative and intriguing in understanding research projects to make the beef industry better! Next years BIF Symposium will be June 9-12 in Amarillo, TX. There is industry funding available for those interested in attending in the future.

August 23rd was the first online Limousin influence feeder calf sale held by Team Auction Sales and it was a great success! Thank you to Jason Danard and the staff of Team Auction Sales for organizing this event and congratulations to those consignors that participated. We feel this has been a positive service to provide our members and customers and hope that builds from year to year. We welcome your feedback on this sale format and look forward to offering it again in the future.

We wish all those the best of luck at all the shows and sales this fall. The cattle industry is as good as it gets right now and it’s about time for our producers! It is important to share sale results with the industry and we ask that you share these with the association so that they can be published.

Wishing all those a successful and safe harvest season!

On behalf of the Association,

Collecting Weaning Weights & FALL PERFORMANCE DATA

As the leaves begin to change and we prepare for another winter, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our production strategies and consider how performance data collection can improve the profitability and sustainability of your herd. One of the most critical aspects of herd management is the collection of accurate weaning weights. The first step in good data collection is a properly identified animal with a tattoo and a Limousin CCIA tag.

Weaning weights are a foundational measurement of calf performance and are important indicators of productivity. Collecting accurate weaning weights allow members to:

Assess Genetic Potential: By analyzing weaning weights, members can identify superior genetics within their herds.

Make Informed Breeding Decisions: Performance data helps in selecting breeding animals that will improve herd performance.

Enhance Market Value: Calves with higher weaning weights typically command better prices at sale time. By focusing on data-driven improvements, members can position their operations for greater profitability.

To ensure the data collected is reliable and useful, members should consider the following best practices:

Standardized Weighing Procedures:

Weigh calves at the same time of year (ideally between 205 and 230 days of age) and under similar conditions to eliminate variability. Ensure that calves are not stressed during the weighing process. The weight should never be estimated and should be recorded to the nearest whole pound if possible. If recording the weight to the nearest whole pound is not feasible, then it can be acceptable to record the weight to the nearest 2-pound increment. Weaning weight should never be recorded to the nearest five pound or other larger increment. Weaning weight should never be estimated by averaging a group weight. Scales should be regularly calibrated.

Record Keeping in Digital Beef:

Maintain detailed records of each calf’s identification, birth date, dam’s information, and weaning weight. Members who complete their registry work by paper will be mailed a weaning weight spreadsheet to record data. Members who work online can enter the weaning weights in Digital Beef in the weaning weight queue. Animals must be registered or recorded prior to entering weaning weights.

Adjusted Value

When publishing weaning weights or performing a genetic evaluation on weaning weight, several nongenetic factors should be considered that influence weaning weight, in addition to the contemporary group. The effects of these factors should be adjusted out prior to publishing weaning weights or computing weaning weight ratios. Obviously weaning weights are affected by the age of the animal, so an adjustment is made for animals all weighed on the same day but differing in age. The standard age for adjustment is 205 days, so the standard then for age-adjusted weaning weight is 205-day weight. To calculate this adjusted weight, the ADG from birth to weaning is multiplied by 205, and then birth weight is added. Additionally, the age of the dam of the calf as well as the sex of the calf will influence calf weaning weights.

Weaning Weight Contemporary Groups

Weaning contemporary group is a group of calves that are of the same sex, are similar in age, and have been raised in the same management group (same location on the same feed and pasture, at the same time) and weaned and weighed on the same day. Contemporary groups should include as many cattle as can be accurately compared. However, if, for example, first-calf heifers are given preferential treatment (better feed) prior to weaning their calves, then these calves should be designated into a separate contemporary group than the calves from mature cows. The makeup and structure of a contemporary group can be viewed under the CG’s tab in Digital Beef.

Beyond Weaning Weights: Additional Performance Data

While weaning weights are crucial, they are just one component of performance data collection Members should also consider collecting data on:

Yearling Weights: Tracking the weight of calves at a yearling stage provides further insight into growth patterns and overall herd health.

Mature Cow Weight: Ideally taken at the time of calf weaning at 205 days using a scale.

Docility: Genetic evaluations for docility are conducted in a single-trait analysis using a linear model fit to chute score category values. No repeated measures are fit. If an animal has both a weaning and yearling docility score than the weaning score is used. The contemporary group is included as the group at weaning (if a weaning observation) or yearling (if a yearling observation). The EPD should be published on the docility-score scale. Only chute scores are used in genetic evaluations.

The collection of weaning weights and other performance data is not only an administrative task but a critical component of effective program management. By embracing data collection and analysis, Limousin members can enhance the performance of their herds, increase marketability, and ultimately drive profitability.

As we move into the winter months, prioritize data collection in our operations. Together, we can strengthen the Canadian Limousin breed and ensure its continued success.
