The cattle market has been so strong and refreshing this fall and has continued so into the new year. As I write this, we are all a little nervous about our trade situation with the US and hope that some resolutions can come swiftly to preserve this successful time in the cattle business for both sides of the border.

There are some top quality Limousin bulls for sale this spring in Manitoba. Many bulls are available by private treaty and

through the Manitoba Bull Test Station and Lundar Bull Sale. I invite you to do your research and visit the breeders on the pages of this issue for finding your next herd sire. Limousin has never had more to offer the beef industry.

The MLA was able to recognize Bill and Lauren Campbell for their long standing commitment to our board and the breed in Manitoba at our AGM. We were so thankful to be able to recognize this achievement before Bill’s passing on January 19th. He will be deeply missed by the entire Manitoba Limousin family. Personally, as President, I have certainly looked to Bill for guidance, knowledge and proper decorum and his valued opinion will be so missed around the table. Lauren has also been instrumental in keeping our finances in check and her time spent on this has been so greatly appreciated. Our board is truly thankful for the time the Campbells invested in our association and Limousin cattle. It was only fitting that Bill was able to move for adjournment at his last AGM.

2025 MLA DIRECTORS

Left to Right: Tim Davey, Kyle Wright, Brady Daniel, Dillon Hunter, Amanda Hamilton-Seward, Travis Hunter, Bob Davey Missing: Cheryl McPherson, Trevor Atchison

The Limousin community of Manitoba, is deeply saddened by the passing of Bill Campbell on January 19th at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with ALS. Bill was diagnosed with ALS in October of 2024 and spent the next four months living life including trips to Ag-Ex, Agribition, the MLA AGM, and spending priceless time with friends and family.

Bill was a fourth generation farmer operating a mixed grain and cattle farm at Minto, Manitoba. The Campbell farm has been in operation for 143 years and Bill was a farmer for all 69 of his. He had a deep love and respect for the land and his livestock and thoroughly enjoyed sharing those passions with others.

Bill grew up on the family farm and planned to return to it, but did venture off to the University of Manitoba where he received his Diploma in Agriculture in 1975. He then returned to the farm and married the love of his life, Lauren Miller, in 1978. Bill and Lauren farmed alongside Bill’s parents Glen and Bernice and raised their two girls, Courtney and Kaitlin, on the farm.

Bill’s dedication to the Manitoba Limousin Association spanned 50 Years. In his years involved, he held the positions of MLA president, vice-president, treasurer, Limousin breed

representative on the AgEx board, and chairman of the Canadian National Limousin Show. He most recently acted as our MLA Treasurer, tag teaming the position, with the accounting skills of Lauren. He has also had an extensive commitment to the Canadian Limousin Association completing four terms on the CLA. He was president, vice-president, past president of the CLA, and also acted as the chair of the breed improvement committee. Bill served as Canadian Limousin president from 2011 to 2013. He was very actively involved at the provincial and national levels and even was a Canadian delegate at the International Limousin Congresses in Denmark and Ireland.

Bill has been a member of the Keystone Agricultural Producers since its inception and he has served on the KAP Advisory Council and Board of Directors. He also chaired the livestock committee for a time. But most importantly, he was KAP President from 2018 to 2023 and acted as vice president before that. Bill had a major influence on Manitoba Agriculture during his time with KAP and had a strong voice for our industry.

Although Bill was involved in agriculture both provincially and nationally, this did not mean that he did not contribute locally. Bill was a 4-H leader for the Margaret and Boissevain clubs. He was also extensively involved in both baseball and fastball resulting in being inducted

into both of those provincial halls of fame. He was also the chairperson for the local restaurant committee and involved in several other local initiatives.

Campbell Limousin became quite successful in the Limousin breed both provincially and across Canada. They marketed cattle to 8 provinces and the USA and Mexico. They had many highlights over the years. They exhibited the Grand Champion carcass steer in 1984 at CWA and the carcass was purchased by Hoescht Canada Inc. for $10,000. They exhibited many champions over the years and had the privilege of competing in the Supreme at Agribition several times. These Supreme experiences were capped off in 2017 when Bill was given the honour of being on the Supreme judging panel. Bill also judged numerous 4-H and cattle shows in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta over the years and was well respected for his ability to do so.

The Campbells had the honour of being selected for the Canadian Limousin Association Award of Distinction in 2016. The Campbells were selected as the Manitoba Limousin Association Ambassador of the Year in 2019. In 2019, Bill also had the unique experience of being interviewed by Johnny Harris on the Canadian television show “Still Standing”. Bill again took this opportunity to teach and promote the Canadian ag sector. The Campbells were also selected as a 2023 BMO Farm Family at the Manitoba Winter Fair.

Although “The Final Chapter” herd dispersal was held in November of 2022, Bill could not quite let go of those well loved Limos and still had a few cows on the farm right up until his passing. He also continued to sit on the MLA Board until our AGM on January 4th. Bill was never one to stand on the sidelines, he lived and breathed Limousin.

Bill Campbell will be forever remembered for his massive contributions to the Limousin breed in Canada and the greater agriculture industry. He was a strong voice of agriculture advocacy and to quote Anne Brunet-Burgess, former CLA manager, “the Canadian ag industry is just a little bit better today because of Bill Campbell”. Bill had a strong moral compass and was always a voice of reason in the organizations that he involved himself in. He would speak his mind and may not always agree with things but he always debated respectfully and listened to all perspectives of an issue. Bill was recognized in 2016 with a University of Manitoba Certificate of Merit by the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences in recognition of leadership with agricultural organizations and outstanding service to the community at large which seems to sum up Bill’s accomplishments. Bill was a well-spoken, independent thinker who felt a pull to serve the ag industry. The Limousin family, of which he was a part of, will be indebted to him for his 50 years of service and he will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.

Thank you for the wonderful print that Bill and I received in recognition of our years of service to the MLA and the Limousin breed. Bill was so pleased to attend the AGM in January and he was honoured to receive this generous gift from his fellow breeders. Bill always treasured the fellowship found in the Manitoba Limousin family.

A thank you isn’t enough to express our deep gratitude for the flowers, kind messages, and support we have received at this time. We will carry your kindness with us always and continue to treasure our Limousin family.

Lauren, Courtney, Andrew, Kaitlin, Cameron, Madison, Rylee, & Charlie

The Manitoba Limousin Association made a special presentation to Bill and Lauren Campbell at the January 2025 AGM. Bill has been involved in the MLA for 50 years, holding almost all positions and being involved in the planning and execution of multiple events. He also spent time on the CLA and has been involved in all things Limousin across the country. Lauren has also been involved in in many events and was instrumental in them tag teaming our Treasurer position most recently. Congratulations and thank you to the Cambells for 50 years of commitment to the MLA and our breed. They have given so much to the breed and for that we are all forever grateful!

Your Opportunity to Select Profitable Genetics! Bulls & Replacement Heifers

Canadian Limousin Association Report

Welcome to the Bull Sale Issue of the Limousin Voice. Demand for feeders, fats and beef remain high driving optimism in producer decision making. High prices are signally some members to sell their calves commercially rather than continue enrolling cows on the whole herd enrollment program. Declining whole herd enrollment numbers present challenges for maintaining the financial stability and effectiveness of the association. It is necessary that we ensure quality registry services and breed promotion continue and we are focused on finding efficiencies to do this rather than reduce services. Well cattle prices may be good; all industries are feeling the pressure of increasing costs, and the association is no different.

Please join us for the Annual General Meeting hosted again this year on Zoom May 29th at 6pm MST. Join us as we review the past year, share updates, and discuss the strategic plan. The newly elected incoming directors will be announced as well. We value your participation and encourage you to join the conversation and share your perspectives as members of the association.

Opportunities are available for members to join the Breed Improvement Committee, Commercial Committee, Promotions Committee, National Show and Sale Committee, and the Registry Committee. Whether you’re interested in advancing Limousin genetics, improving the registry user experience, or supporting the National Show and Sale, there’s a place for your expertise and enthusiasm. Your voice matters, and we encourage you to get involved and make a difference. If you’re interested in joining a committee, please reach out to the board of directors.

They exemplify excellent sportsmanship and support to fellow peers regardless of where they placed amongst participants. They exemplify these traits continuously and demonstrate a kind and polite manner toward other juniors and adults.

Congratulations to Laura Seward, the first recipient of this new award. Laura is very deserving of this award and her work to revive the Limousin show at Manitoba AgEx was recognized by the breed and association as a significant achievement. As stated by her nominator: Laura has been a passionate advocate for the Limousin breed in Manitoba. She has revitalized the Manitoba Junior Limousin Association and has worked tirelessly to secure enough breeders to have a Limousin show at Manitoba Ag-Ex. Laura is friendly, helpful and outgoing. She is a strong, silent leader and a huge benefit to the cattle industry as a whole. Congratulations, Laura, proud to have you as a part of the Limousin family!
