Glistening glasses of beer or other specialty cocktails are often raised high in celebration of a significant achievement, important milestones or other events that simply spark joy. Other times, those same beverages are sipped on the heels of a more somber memory. For Zac Triemert, the introduction of Jerry’s Pale Ale was developed to recognize both.

Triemert, a familiar face in the Nebraska brewing and distilling industry, lost his father, Jerry, to pancreatic cancer. The distance between diagnosis and Jerry’s passing was a short one, yet it sparked in Triemert the opportunity to honor and celebrate his beloved father’s life.

Jerry’s Pale Ale was born in time for Christmas and everyone in Triemert’s family was gifted two bottles.

“One to drink, one to save,” Triemert said. “Some of us laughed, some cried. But I changed the experience with that beer. That’s what inspired Lucky Bucket.”

Science at the start

Triemert’s origins in the brewing industry are rooted in the hard sciences. He earned undergraduate degrees in microbiology and

Two ordered into quarantine

The group of people who came to Omaha from the M/V Hondius cruise ship will be in Omaha at least through the end of this month. CDC has issued quarantine orders for two passengers who were repatriated to Nebraska from the ship. The orders were signed by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the CDC’s Acting Director, and issued under the Public Health Service Act and implementing regulations (42 CFR parts 70 and 71). CDC will continue to coordinate with state and local health authorities as we work together to come up with the best solutions to protect the health and safety of these passengers.

The Other 61.6 Million

SMALL BUSINESSES WORK BECAUSE PEOPLE DO

May is Small Business Month, which means there is plenty of coverage celebrating entrepreneurs, founders, and the risk-takers who built something from nothing. Those stories matter. We’ve told several of them throughout our Impact 250 series, which has been spotlighting small businesses across the Omaha metro consistently since April 2025. But Small Business Month shouldn’t just honor the people who started companies. It should also recognize the 61.6 million Americans who work for them. That’s about 45.9% of the workforce, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

This week’s Impact 250 features celebrate six more small businesses, shifting from the founder’s vision to the people who execute it daily. Small businesses don’t succeed because someone had a good idea and took a risk. They succeed because employees show up, do the work, and make the operation function.

Zac Triemert founded Brickway Brewing & Distillery and created Jerry’s Pale Ale to honor his late father, turning personal grief into something people could share. That origin story resonates, and we tell it on page 9. Brickway also employs 32 people who brew beer, distill spirits, serve customers, manage inventory, and keep the business running. The company exists because Triemert started it; it works because those 32 people show up.

Ryan Miller opened Apex Martial Arts after discovering martial arts in college and abandoning his dental school plans. He built a business teaching taekwondo, karate, and jiu-jitsu while developing student leaders and offering self-defense training for women. That’s Miller’s achievement. But Apex operates because instructors teach classes, mentor students, and carry out the mission Miller defined. Miller told us he develops leaders from within the organization, looking for people who “love martial arts and working with kids and adults just like me.” Those instructors aren’t supporting players. They’re why the business delivers on its promises.

Jennifer Hammond started EverBloom Floral and Gift because she loves nature and working with flowers. Her daughter Vanessa Nkwocha eventually joined after realizing that creating beauty was as meaningful as her previous career as a therapist. But EverBloom’s seven floral designers are the ones listening to customers, understanding what people need to communicate, and creating arrangements for births, weddings, illnesses, and funerals. Nkwocha said the team “partners with families from the cradle to the grave.” That’s not a tagline. That’s seven people doing emotional labor every day.

Small Business Month celebrates entrepreneurship, innovation, and community impact. All legitimate. But the reason small businesses deliver on those promises is that people choose to work there. They take jobs at small businesses because the pay works, the schedule fits, the mission matters, the commute is short, or it beats the alternative. Some stay because they believe in what the company does. Some stay because they like their coworkers. Some stay because they’ve been there so long it’s become home. All valid reasons, and none require a founder’s story to be worth recognizing.

The employees at this week’s featured businesses — Apex Martial Arts, Brickway Brewing & Distillery, EverBloom Floral and Gift, Pilcher’s Indian Store, Platinum Pool Service, and Wheatfield’s Eatery and Bakery — are the stars of their success. They’re the ones maintaining pools, arranging flowers, teaching martial arts, serving food, preserving cultural heritage and brewing beer. Small Business Month celebrates that work, not as supporting evidence for entrepreneurial vision, but as the thing itself The Impact 250 series exists to spotlight businesses making a difference in the Omaha metro. This week, we’re spotlighting the people who make those businesses possible.

Booth coached the women’s volleyball squad from 2003-2024, while Flanery has guided the women’s basketball team since 2002. On May 13, 2026, they were roasted together as the 186th Face on the Barroom Floor at the Omaha Press Club.

The emcee was Bruce Rasmussen, retired director of athletics at Creighton University. Roasting the night’s honorees were Creighton University tennis coach Tom Lilly; Omaha Lancers President Mike West; Mark Jones, a former Creighton University basketball player, vice president at Northpoint Recovery in Omaha and mental health and sports performance consultant for Creighton athletics; Creighton University head volleyball coach Brian Rosen; Creighton University assistant volleyball coach Angie Oxley Behrens; and Brad Bernthal, Kirsten’s brother, who is associate professor emeritus at the University of Colorado School of Law and founder of Brain Cramp Camp.

For more than two decades, Bernthal Booth and Flanery created programs of excellence at Creighton University. Due to the success of the women’s volleyball and basketball programs, Creighton was able to open the Ryan Athletics Center and D.J. Sokol Arena in 2009. The artist depicted the two honorees inside the facility with a Bluejay logo between their names.

At the bottom right of the drawing, head coach Brian Rosen and assistant Angie Oxley Behrens — two of the roasters that evening — are depicted holding a Bluejay volleyball.

Under each of the coaches, a scroll lists some of their top accomplishments.

Coach Flanery’s list includes a career record of 469-290 for a .618 winning percentage, eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, a Big East Conference championship in 2017, a Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2012, and a

Women’s National Invitation Tournament championship in 2004.

Coach Booth, who is now serving as president of business operations for LOVB Nebraska, part of the League One Volleyball professional league, has a list that includes 12 conference titles, 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, being named National Coach of the Year and Conference Coach of the Year, and being a member of the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame.

chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, with plans to pursue work as a microbiologist.

The loss of his father sparked a career change that remains today. His master’s degrees — in both brewing and distilling — are from a school much farther away: Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He launched Lucky Bucket Brewing Co. nearly 20 years ago after returning to Nebraska with a refreshed focus and a new goal: ensuring beer and spirits production in the state was legal. He worked not only to draft — but also pass — a number of legislative bills for Nebraska which at the time did not allow craft distilling in the state. Brickway Brewery & Distillery opened in 2013.

“Life is too short,” he said. “You have to do what you love.”

Serving up sanitizer

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to grip the area (and the world), Brickway’s distillers began producing hand sanitizer.

“There was a need,” Triemert said. “You couldn’t find it, and you couldn’t buy it. Most other (distillers) were selling it. We just donated it.”

At first, Brickway donated its hand sanitizer to first responders, hospitals, nursing homes and businesses. Each week, Brickway invited anyone to stop by for what he jokingly referred to as “hand sanitzer on tap.” Brickway staff filled containers of all shapes and sizes with its hand sanitizer for free, for weeks and weeks.

In the years since, Triemert and his team applied the same outwardlooking mentality to diligently advancing the industry. In doing so, they’ve built Nebraska’s largest distillery.

“The people running the bars, restaurants and grocery stores have supported us so well,” Triemert said. “It keeps me driving hard to keep up with the good work we’ve done and to keep it going.”

Apex Martial Arts

BY DEBRA S.

Leadership, Discipline and Sport

In pursuit of a dentistry career, Ryan Miller discovered a martial arts class to fill his credit hours in undergrad. It so captivated him it became his livelihood, inspiring him to open Apex Martial Arts in April 2006.

“I didn’t get into dental school; maybe it had something to do with taking martial arts classes for three semesters and not more science,” he said. “But it worked out because my instructor, Chief Master Mike Kassebaum, suggested, ‘You should run a martial arts school. You’re good at this.’ I was like, ‘Let’s give this a shot.’

Turning passion into principles

Miller discovered a love for teaching and owning his business, a perk being that he “doesn’t have to answer to anyone except the students,” as he put it.

That allows him to give undivided focus on students at all levels, which has helped Miller grow Apex through milestones and challenges into the business and community he envisioned.

“Having good instructors is a challenge and I’m lucky. Right now, we have the best group I’ve ever had,” he said. “We develop our leaders from the inside. I’ve never hired an outside person to teach classes. I want somebody to do it because they love martial arts and working with kids and adults just like me. That’s one of the things I look for in our leaders.”

In addition to classes in taekwondo, karate, jiu-jitsu and more, students are offered a leadership class. These classes give students the chance to be in more advanced martial arts training along with helping with warmups or similar small roles in other programs. They

also encourage others to stay consistent with training.

“If I see leadership qualities in them I’ll say, ‘Hey, start helping out with classes,’” Miller said. “Sometimes the student comes directly to me and says, ‘Leadership looks like fun. I want to learn the advanced martial arts or help out with classes.’ Those are the ones I love because I know they are there for the right reasons.”

Beyond the gym

Miller said Apex’s martial arts classes boost the confidence of the students enrolled and its leadership programs are having a wider impact on students and their families than just within the building’s walls.

“I’ve heard a lot of good reports from parents that this has translated into real life,” he said. “Some of those parents are teachers at school and they’ll tell me, ‘I see how your students are leaders at school.’ That’s something I’m very proud of.”

Apex has also hosted self-defense training tailored for women in the workplace. Feedback has been positive with students saying the curriculum gives them real-world skills that make them feel safe.

“I think the community as a whole should be involved in martial arts,” he said. “I’m not just saying that because it’s my business. I think it provides a safer community as a whole if we all have some training.”

To encourage people to begin martial arts classes and expand the community’s safety, Miller regularly shares the Apex motto: “It’s going to take practice to get you there. You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

EverBloom Floral and Gift

More Than Flowers CREATING SPECIAL MOMENTS, MEMORIES

Growing up in the floral business, Vanessa Nkwocha had no desire to join her mother in running EverBloom Floral and Gift. She was going to become a therapist instead.

Jennifer Hammond, her mother, has long loved nature, Nkwocha said.

“She loves the outdoors,” Nkwocha said. “She loves connecting with nature. She loves having her hands in the dirt. So it really is a good fit for her. It’s what really makes her heart beat faster.”

Flowers as therapy

Nkwocha eventually acquiesced to her true calling. After spending almost a decade as a therapist, she found herself working alongside Hammond, opening and managing EverBloom’s second location on 90th Street.

“I thought beauty was not enough, so I was going to make my mark and change the world,” Nkwocha said. “It really became obvious to me that beauty is enough, and that the way I wanted to change the world was by connecting with people and helping them to celebrate victories and to collaborate with them, to celebrate all of the ways that life can be sweet to us.”

EverBloom isn’t a typical floral shop. Floral designers here develop relationships with customers, Nkwocha said, and prioritize creating a special experience for each customer.

“You partner with families from the cradle to the grave,” she said. “It really is an amazing way to stand beside people and cheer them on,

and be their fangirl while they’re going through (in vitro fertilization), be the loudest cheerleader when the baby is born. We get to become family to the entire community, and that’s pretty precious.”

Hear their hearts

As her florists seek to create authentic arrangements, they ask questions that go beyond what may be someone’s favorite flower or color. EverBloom Floral even created its own greeting card line, Beautifully Said.

“We get to hear what they need, hear their hearts, hear what they’re trying to say to their loved ones,” Nkwocha said. “The same messages are kind of resonating the world over, everyone wants to celebrate the same victories, the same milestones.

While EverBloom Floral designers create works of art, they can only do so because of people’s willingness to share their stories, she said. Customers have become a community of friends, she said, friends in whose lives the store often plays a major role.

“We do warn guys who come in for first-date flowers that EverBloom flowers lead to weddings,” she said. “If that’s not what he’s looking for, he probably should go get flowers somewhere else. If he is not willing to fall head-over-heels for her, then he should just swing by a grocery store.”

In the end, flowers have proven to be her therapy, Nkwocha said. “Maybe that’s what I went to school for, maybe it wasn’t a wasted degree,” she said. “We show up and we listen with our hearts.”

Pilcher’s Indian Store

Labor of Love MILLARD SHOP KEEPS NATIVE

AMERICAN CULTURE CLOSE

From original works by Lakota artist Sam Two Bulls to tobacco and medicine wheels for tribal ceremonies, Pilcher’s Indian Store has become a mainstay among Omaha-area Native Americans.

With clothing, Indigenous music and pottery by creators from tribes around the United States, Pilcher’s has also developed a following among non-Native people who appreciate those cultures.

Pilcher’s has grown from a home-based business operated out of the owner’s parents’ house in Kansas to its current Millard location.

Leather maker

Starting out as a leather maker, Howard Pilcher made wallets, belts and other leather products.

“He went to Tandy’s leather and bought every tool in the store,” said Mary Friesell, the current store owner and Pilcher’s stepdaughter.

Once word got out about Pilcher’s talent, people sought more from him, Friesell said.

“’Do you have cassettes? Do you have blankets?’ Things like that, so then they started adding to it,” she said.

South Sioux City

With the business outgrowing their home, Howard and Allene Pilcher relocated to South Sioux City, opening their first brick-andmortar shop in 1978, Friesell said. Pilcher was an enrolled citizen of the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) Nation and also Sac and Fox. Allene Pilcher was Lakota.

The Pilchers later relocated the store to Fort Calhoun to be closer to Friesell and their grandchildren. After moving the shop to Florence in the mid-’80s, Pilcher’s Indian Store has been at its current location since the early 1990s, Friesell said.

“We’re a one-of-a-kind store,” she said. “You don’t find stores like us around here. As things got bad during COVID, I hung on, and it was hard. I purchased the herbs and things that Native people wanted; they needed the bear root (to treat) COVID, and they wiped me out. It was very hard for everybody.”

Pilcher’s Indian Store works with Native American artisans and creatives, Friesell said. Among authentic products are wood carvings, beadwork including bracelets and medallions, and pottery, primarily from Plains and southwest U.S. Native American creators.

“I try to get as many Native things as I can,” she said. “You can’t be 100% Native, but the majority of my things are Native, whether they’re from Omaha or one of the tribes bringing me things.”

Building relationships

Pilcher’s isn’t a profitable venture, Friesell said. What keeps the store open, then?

“It’s a labor of love,” she said. “This is the type of business you get into, and you just fall in love with doing it. Buying from people and the people you meet coming in here.”

As the sole employee, building relationships with customers has been important to the store’s longevity, Friesell said.

“You get to know your regular customers,” she said. “I think, ‘Oh, I haven’t seen so-and-so in a while,’ and within a week they come in. It’s like they get mental telepathy from me. You get to establish relationships with a lot of people.”

Friesell knows she’ll retire sooner than later and hopes her children — daughter Laura and sons Adam and Jeremy — will take Pilcher’s to a new level.

“It’s a good opportunity,” she said.

Taking the Plunge HONESTY,

HARD WORK

AND RELATIONSHIPS

Chad Sarver, owner and partner of Platinum Pool Service, has a career history of working in property management where he oversaw apartments and homeowner associations with swimming pools. There, he saw firsthand how frustrating it could be when service providers were inconsistent with communication, followthrough and professionalism.

He quickly realized that the Omaha area needed a different kind of pool service company, one that was centered on honesty, hard work and relationships. Sarver started brainstorming on how to make that happen and reached out to Scott Nigro, now his business partner. Platinum Pool Service was born.

“We believed that if we built a company that did what it said it would do and treated people the right way, we could raise the standard in our industry and build something meaningful along the way,” Sarver said.

Now celebrating two decades of operations, the company services both residential and commercial pools in addition to selling a wide variety of pool parts, chemicals, liners, covers and much more.

“Pools are tied to meaningful moments in people’s lives,” Sarver said. “Sometimes that means helping families create summer memories, helping facilities prepare for important events, or giving people peace of mind that their space is ready to enjoy.”

Sarver said transitioning from doing technical work to being a business owner has forced him to step back and focus on systems, culture and leadership.

“I had to become more of a coach and leader, not just a technician,”

Sarver said. “That transition has been especially challenging over the last year and a half, but it has also been one of the most important lessons of my life. I have learned that sometimes serving people best means not only being the one vacuuming the last leaf but also building a team that can consistently deliver excellence.”

As for what sets Platinum Pool Service apart, Sarver said it’s simple.

“We have always believed professionalism matters just as much as technical skill,” he said. “We focus heavily on communication, followthrough, trust and long-term relationships. We are not trying to be the cheapest option. We are trying to be the company that people trust because we care deeply, communicate clearly and stand behind our work.”

Sarver’s view on growth is also something that stands out.

“Growth is not just about getting more customers,” he said. “It is about building the right team, creating healthy systems and staying true to your values as the business changes around you.”

On the horizon, Platinum Pool Service has plans to continue serving Omaha and beyond.

“The next big goal is to continue building Platinum Pool Service into a place where great people want to work and where customers consistently receive remarkable experiences. I do not just want to build the best pool service company in Omaha, I want to help build one of the best service companies in Omaha. That means investing in leadership, improving our processes and remembering that the customer is the point of everything we do.”

Wheatfield’s Eatery and Bakery

Recipe for Success FROM DELICIOUS DINE-IN TO GOODIES TO GO

For the last 26 years, people all over Omaha have come to love the mouthwatering menu lineup at Wheatfield’s Eatery and Bakery.

Owner Ron Popp’s path to Wheatfield’s was shaped by decades of hands-on restaurant experience. After managing an Omaha Perkins location for 10 years, he struck out on his own, eventually operating several Garden Cafe locations across the metro. A brief venture with outside investors clarified his vision: scratch-made food and consistent quality that wouldn’t be compromised for the sake of scalability.

In 2000, he channeled those hard-won lessons into Wheatfield’s, building a business model rooted in simplicity and from-scratch integrity.

Simplicity is key

Launched by Ron and Ruth Ann Popp, the business was inspired by something simple: a love of good, farm-fresh foods, especially bakery items. This credo has been crucial to winning over Omahans time and time again.

“We base so many of our menu offerings from family

recipes, not from commercially produced freezer foods,” he said.

The restaurant, which started small, has expanded to now offer one side for full-service sit-down dining and the other side for customers to pick up orders to go.

Known for their decadent bakery items — including scratch-made cakes for weddings, special events, or just by the slice — customers can choose from flavors such as Mom’s Sour Cream Chocolate Cake, Waldorf Red Velvet Cake, Karen’s OooLala Cake and many more.

In-house dining is also popular, and guests love to indulge in house favorites like the Stratta Bon Jour, a deep dish baked entree layered with whipped eggs, potatoes, onions, herbs, meats and three cheeses.

Take-out products include a mix of seasonal menu items such as corned beef and cabbage and hot turkey sandwiches, as well as soup and cinnamon roll combos, quiches, sloppy joes, salads and scrumptious desserts including key lime pie, caramel rolls, zebra brownies and cheesecake. Even better? Your pet can find a goodie at Wheatfield’s with cheesy dog bones on the menu.

Wheatfield’s also offers catering services across the Omaha metro area, with delivery and set-up available. Here, customers can choose from lunch boxes and bags; soup combos; pre-packaged meals; casseroles; pastries and rolls, desserts; appetizers; salads; meat; veggie or fruit trays; and much more.

While business ownership requires dedication and creativity, Ron said that one of the most important lessons he’s learned is the ability to be adaptable.

“Get it in writing and be willing to change,” he said.

“Even for a drastic change.”

Looking ahead, Ron and his team are looking forward to continuing to build a profitable restaurant to better serve delicious, wholesome, homemade food to people in the communities across the area.

Investing Through the AI Supercycle

Weekly Market Commentary

The meteoric rise in chip stocks over the last two years has been fascinating to watch. What was historically considered one of the most cyclical and volatile corners of the technology sector, memory chips, is now one of the hottest places to invest.

This all began with Nvidia, the company that designs Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Nvidia’s chips helped ignite the modern generative AI revolution and its shares have increased more than thirteenfold since 2023. However, as artificial intelligence begins performing more complex tasks, memory has become increasingly important. Demand for high-bandwidth memory chips has created a frenzy, both among hyperscalers racing to secure supply and among investors gripped by FOMO (fear of missing out).

Shares of Micron Technology, a key provider of memory products, have surged nearly 700% over the past 12 months. Another provider, SanDisk, has seen its stock increase more than 3,700% in the last year. Certainly there is likely some exuberance, but is it irrational? SanDisk’s datacenter sales increased 645% in the third fiscal quarter as reported April 30, 2026, and management expects growth to accelerate materially, with inventory essentially sold out for the remainder of the

year. It’s a similar story for the rest of the memory chip manufacturers.

Moves like this naturally spark conversations about bubbles and comparisons to the dot-com era, however there is a meaningful difference between today and the late 1990s: these companies are generating real profits that help justify the excitement. The lingering question is not whether this is hype or whether valuations are absurd but rather when does the music stop?

We believe this is a multi-year demand supercycle but even supercycles eventually end. Attempting to predict how high the market will climb — or when it will inevitably reverse — is a fool’s errand. The prudent way to invest is through diversification. That allows investors to participate in the potential upside over the coming decade, while maintaining exposure to other non-correlated investments that can help manage risk and reduce concentration for the day, as Don McLean famously sang, “the music dies.”

GOV.

JIM PILLEN PROCLAIMS

MAY AS RENEWABLE FUELS MONTH

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA — May 19, 2026 — Today, the Nebraska Ethanol Board (NEB) proudly joined Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen in proclaiming May as Renewable Fuels Month. Nebraska’s ethanol industry is a cornerstone of our state’s prosperity. Nebraska’s 24 ethanol plants produce over 2 billion gallons of homegrown renewable fuel annually, with a total economic impact of over $6 billion per year. The industry supports rural communities and provides thousands of high-quality careers across the state, including directly creating 1,800 jobs with average salaries near $80,000. For drivers, ethanol means lower prices at the pump—reducing the cost of gas by 77 cents per gallon, and delivering more than $750 in savings per year to the average U.S. family. Furthermore, ethanol often improves vehicle performance while driving down emissions.

Nebraska Ethanol Board Executive Director Ben Rhodes issued the following statement: “Today’s proclamation of May as Renewable Fuels Month sends a clear message that Nebraska values the farmers, producers, and workers who make our ethanol industry a national leader. This industry fuels our vehicles and saves consumers money, and it also fuels development and growth across our state. The Nebraska Ethanol Board thanks Governor Pillen for his support, as well as our legislative partners who champion ethanol at both the state and federal level. While May is the perfect time to celebrate Renewable Fuels Month, the NEB remains committed to promoting and advocating for ethanol all year long.”

Fueled by Nebraska—a partnership of Nebraska biofuels organizations—along with the Nebraska Soybean Board and the Nebraska Sorghum Board, invite you to join them to celebrate renewable fuels this May. Learn more and find ethanol retail locations at fueledbynebraska.com.

The Nebraska Ethanol Board works to ensure strong public policy and consumer support for biofuels. Since 1971, the independent state agency has designed and managed programs to expand production, market access, worker safety and technology innovation, including recruitment of producers interested in developing conventional ethanol, as well as bio-products from the ethanol platform. For more information, visit www.ethanol.nebraska.gov.

Fueled by Nebraska is a partnership of the Nebraska Ethanol Board, the Nebraska Corn Board, and Renewable Fuels Nebraska to ensure strong markets for biofuels.

Strengthening Our Community

A PERSONAL WELCOME TO THE NEWEST CAP CLASS

Each year, a new group of professional advisors chooses to deepen their understanding of philanthropy by enrolling in the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® program. That decision reflects a commitment not only to professional growth, but to serving clients with greater purpose and clarity. At the Omaha Community Foundation, we are proud to facilitate CAP® locally in partnership with founder Mark Weber and committee leadership. I am honored to welcome the newest class into a program that continues to strengthen both advisory practices and our broader community.

As a graduate myself, I have seen the motivations behind many professionals going through the CAP® course rooted in service to community and their individual clients.

CAP® brings together professionals from law, accounting, financial services, trust administration, and the nonprofit sector for a yearlong, graduatelevel curriculum. The program focuses on charitable planning, donor intent, legacy giving, and values based decision making, all grounded in real world scenarios advisors encounter with clients. The coursework offers participants a broader understanding of how philanthropy functions within a community and how advisors can play a meaningful role in that ecosystem.

One of the defining strengths of CAP® is the perspective it offers beyond technical tools. Through the program, advisors gain insight into how families, nonprofits, and institutions work together to address community needs. That wider lens often shapes the way these professionals approach conversations with clients who want their giving to reflect both their values and their longterm goals.

I understand firsthand what it means to dedicate nearly 100 hours to coursework while balancing demanding careers, clients, and personal responsibilities, and I am always impressed with the dedication people have to this course. I also know firsthand how valuable it is to learn alongside a cohort of peers who continue to serve as a sounding board and resource long after the formal coursework ends. Those relationships are one of the most lasting benefits of CAP® and continue to support advisors well beyond graduation.

The lessons of CAP® align closely with how we work at the Omaha Community Foundation. As my colleague Donna Kush, CEO of OCF, often emphasizes, effective philanthropy works best when the right people are at the table. That includes the advisor, the attorney, the family, and nonprofit partners. Our role is to help coordinate those relationships so donor intent is clear, communication is aligned, and giving strategies are carried out with care and precision.

That collaborative, concierege-level approach helps donors give with confidence while ensuring generosity meets real community needs.

This work matters now more than ever. Families are navigating complex decisions amid historic levels of wealth transfer, and advisors are being called on to guide conversations about impact, transparency, and legacy. In 2025 alone, the Omaha Community Foundation distributed $316 million in grants from donors of all sizes and interests, often in partnership with advisors who understand the value of thoughtful, well-planned philanthropy.

On behalf of myself, Mark Weber, CAP® alumni, and the Omaha Community Foundation, I welcome the following professionals to the program:

Adam Austin – Tax Shareholder, Lutz

Amy Bernstein Shivvers – Executive Director, Jewish Federation of Omaha Foundation

Scott Berryman – Attorney and Trust Officer

Rebecca Bode – Chief Financial Officer, Peter Kiewit Foundation

Ryan Decker, CFP – Vice President and Relationship Manager, Bridges Trust

Tony DeLuca – Cofounder and Partner, Smith Pauley LLP

Rochelle Mullen – Attorney, Cline Williams

Mike O’Malley – Senior Director of Development, Heider College of Business at Creighton University
