Business Ethics Make Better Business PARTNERSHIP LINKS TWO GROUPS BUILT ON ADVANCING TRUST BY DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN The Business Ethics Alliance revealed recently that beginning later this year it will operate from the headquarters of the Better Business Bureau of the Midwest Plains, deepening a long partnership between two organizations built on the same foundational mission. The move, tentatively projected for late spring, preserves the BEA’s identity as an independent nonprofit while giving its threeperson staff access to BBB’s marketing, finance and HR infrastructure, freeing the organization to expand programming outside the metro area. The BEA, founded in 2007, has operated from Creighton University’s Heider College of Business since its inception. Its three founding partners — Heider College, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the BBB — unanimously supported the transition. “This is not a transactional arrangement,” said Jim Hegarty, executive director of the BBB Midwest Plains. “It’s a strategic alignment. BBB’s mission is marketplace trust. BEA’s mission is practical business ethics education. They aren’t just compatible, they’re complementary.”

FROM THE editor Does It Have to Be This Way? The Business Ethics Alliance held their EthicSpace conference on March 12, during which they announced it’s moving from Creighton University’s Heider College of Business, where it’s operated since 2007, to the headquarters of the Better Business Bureau of the Midwest Plains. The transition preserves the BEA’s independence while giving its three-person staff access to BBB’s infrastructure — marketing, finance, HR — that frees them to expand programming beyond Omaha. It’s the kind of strategic alignment that sounds obvious in hindsight but requires vision to execute. Jim Hegarty, BBB’s executive director, was clear about what this represents: not a merger, not an acquisition, but two organizations with the complementary missions of marketplace trust and practical ethics education finally operating from the same address. Bev Kracher founded the BEA nearly two decades ago, asking herself what more could be done in this community to bring forth ethical practices and conversations. Some of the best businesses start with someone asking a deceptively simple question: Does it have to be this way? Didi Olsen asked it watching her mother strip off chemically-saturated clothing at the front door after shifts doing acrylic nails. Sandy Albers asked it standing in a grocery store looking at Styrofoam plates of American cheese and lunch meat labeled “charcuterie.” Jessica Ellis and Whitney Kamish asked it while fostering rescue pugs and watching a proper diet transform the animals’ health. The answer in each case was things can change. That realization led to each woman building something better. I’ve used The Nail Shop myself, and what strikes me isn’t just the products or the attentive staff, although both are excellent. It’s their purpose. Olsen didn’t want to create a slightly nicer version of a traditional nail salon; she wanted to eliminate the chemicals that made her mother’s work hazardous. That meant no acrylics, no UV-cured gel, no dip. It meant keeping the plexiglass barriers and extra sanitizing protocols from the pandemic because they work. It meant accepting that some potential customers would walk away looking for services The Nail Shop deliberately doesn’t offer. That’s conviction, not compromise. Albers faced similar skepticism when she opened Artisan Boards of Omaha in 2019. She was skeptical as to whether people would pay more for fresh-designed boards with brie and goat cheese. What she understood was that people would pay for quality if you showed them what quality looked like. She’s been so successful that Albers claims Artisan Boards is about to become the second store in the country to ship fresh charcuterie nationally. More important to Albers, she built something her grandchildren can inherit.

Daisy Hutzell-Rodman

Ellis and Kamish took the same approach at The Green Spot, the eco-friendly pet store I first encountered years ago (around 2013, although the exact year eludes me) and have watched grow into a cornerstone of Omaha’s pet community. I’ve always been impressed by this woman-owned business, not because it sells pet supplies, but because it educates pet owners. During COVID, when many businesses contracted, the sisters expanded their online presence and offered free delivery. They host community pet health fairs combining education, preventative care and local partnerships. They support rescues and shelters. They built relationships with other independent retailers instead of viewing them as competition. What these and other businesses in this issue share isn’t an industry or a demographic. It’s a willingness to challenge accepted standards and build something that reflects their values rather than replicating what already exists. Olsen created a nail salon where technicians don’t go home carrying chemicals on their clothes. Albers created a charcuterie business where blue- and white-collar customers find options that fit their budgets. Ellis and Kamish created a pet store that prioritizes animal health over product sales. This edition features several other businesses doing similar work: finding better ways to serve their communities, questioning industry norms, building with intention. That’s the thread worth following. Daisy Hutzell-Rodman Executive Editor Midlands Business Journal

grounded in a simple but powerful premise. “We started the Alliance with the idea that city-level business ethics is a missing link,” Kracher said. “For employees and organizations to stand tall, they need to live in a community that values doing that. The Alliance was born to support the best in us and to build and strengthen our town.” Early on, the Alliance’s trustees identified five shared values at the organization’s core: accountability, community responsibility, financial vitality, integrity and moral courage. Those values have guided nearly two decades of programming and Kracher said the current moment underscores their relevance. “When we read about what is happening in cities across our country today, we know we are on the right track,” she said. “Keeping ethics front of mind is key to our health.” From the beginning, the founding partners recognized an opportunity to create something without parallel. “You would not find anywhere else in the country a university, a Better Business Bureau and a chamber of commerce that came together for the purpose of ethics education,” Hegarty said. For nearly two decades, Heider College served as the BEA’s institutional home, and that relationship continues. Creighton remains a founding partner and will provide ongoing financial support, academic resources, event space and faculty access even after the BEA staff relocates to BBB headquarters. “This strategic alignment is the brainchild of Jim Hegarty,” Kracher said. “I remember Jim’s enthusiasm when our small but mighty group started the Alliance.”

Mission alignment

AnnMarie Marlier, Ph.D., BEA’s current executive director, said the decision came down to two factors: mission alignment and long-term sustainability. “When you look at the BBB’s mission of advancing marketplace trust, (which is also) ours, that alignment was most closely apparent,” Marlier said. “We need ethics and ethics education now more than ever. So how do we look at mission alignment and resourcing?” Marlier also pointed to a meaningful distinction in how the two organizations approach their shared values. The BBB tends to respond after problems surface by addressing complaints, flagging bad actors and protecting consumers. The BEA works on the front end by educating businesses on ethical decision-making before issues arise. Together, she said, the two organizations offer a cradle-to-grave approach to marketplace integrity. The nonprofit landscape of 2025 also sharpened the question of sustainability. Federal funding cutbacks and intensifying competition for grant dollars hit small nonprofits across the country. The BEA, which depends on corporate support and contributions, was not immune. “Everybody in the nonprofit sector knows that 2025 was tough,” Hegarty said. “It just seemed that it was time to really evaluate the need to create an absolutely sustainable platform for the Alliance’s future.” Kracher said the business logic is straightforward. “The ability to share costs (and) relationships and build off each other’s strengths will make the Alliance fiercer,” she said. “The vision has caught hold. We will continue to be a beacon for other cities across the nation and the world.”

This is not a transactional arrangement. It’s a strategic alignment. BBB’s mission is marketplace trust. BEA’s mission is practical business ethics education. They aren’t just compatible, they’re complementary. - JIM HEGARTY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BBB MIDWEST PLAINS Back-office relief

Moving to the BBB also gives the Alliance access to dedicated teams for marketing and communications, finance, human resources and IT. Up to now, the three-person BEA team, comprised of Marlier, Director of Operations Shannon Underwood and Director of Educational Programs and Events Hamza Haqqi, Ed.D., had been shouldering administrative duties alongside programming and fundraising. “We want the Alliance team to be intensely focused on the mission and able to lean on the resources the BBB can offer that just were not available to them historically,” Hegarty said. Under the new structure, the BEA’s board of directors will transition to an advisory board role, with overall governance falling under the BBB. The organization retains its independent 501(c)(3) status and will continue generating its own revenue. Terms of the cost-sharing arrangement are still being finalized. Marlier insisted almost nothing changes outwardly. “What changes is some of the behind-the-scenes processes that give us better ability to respond, greater efficiencies and ultimately larger reach,” she said. “The opportunities for trustee engagement — time, treasure, talent and testimonial — remain exactly the same.” Madeline Moyer, BEA board chair and senior vice president at Security National Bank, expressed confidence in the direction. “This partnership represents the best of both organizations,” Moyer said in a video presented at the trustees’ meeting.. “Our board is confident that this is the right move for the businesses and communities we serve.”

EthicSpace set what’s ahead

Many in Omaha learned of the merger at EthicSpace 2026, the BEA’s signature symposium held March 12 at Creighton University. Themed “Telling Our Business Stories Ethically,” the event drew senior leaders from Nebraska’s business, nonprofit and civic sectors for the half-day program. The event offered a redesigned format to be more accessible for busy professionals while delivering substantive content. Keynote speaker was Jason Bevan, former creative head at Warner Bros. Pictures with credits from “The Dark Knight” films to “A Star is Born.” He brought two decades of Hollywood experience to the stage as he addressed how the principles behind iconic storytelling translate directly to ethical business communication. Ethical storytelling is among the top challenges Marlier said she sees in today’s business environment. “How does an organization create spin in a very uncertain environment and do so ethically?” she said. “Information is manipulated; it is presented at times without regard to the impact it is going to have. Those are ethical challenges.” Other pressing ethical questions on the BEA’s horizon include data center energy use and the responsibilities businesses face around immigrant workforces, conversations Marlier said the Alliance is uniquely positioned to facilitate without taking political sides. “Our position is (not) a political one,” she said. “We provide a platform to have difficult discussions. Leaders need a place to wrestle with these difficult ethical decisions.”

A larger platform

The BBB Midwest Plains serves businesses across five states, counts more than 10,000 members and is the fourth-largest BBB region in North America. That network gives the BEA access to a far broader audience than previously available. “The ability to reach beyond Omaha at some point, when we’re ready, is appealing,” Marlier said. “It means we can bring those combined and aligned missions of advancing marketplace trust and business ethics to so many more people.” Marlier is eyeing potential growth markets, communities where the BEA has already begun to cultivate a presence. Hegarty acknowledged the model could attract interest from other BBB offices nationally but emphasized that the Omaha market remains primary. “As long as it doesn’t detract from our central focus of serving the Omaha business community, we’re open to some potential scalability,” he said. Heath Mello, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber, said in a video announcing the partnership that it raises Omaha’s profile. “By combining BEA’s educational expertise with BBB’s century of experience and infrastructure, these organizations will create a powerful center for business ethics that positions Omaha as a national leader in this critical area,” he said. Tony Hendrickson, Ph.D., dean of Creighton’s Heider College of Business, said in that same video the college remains fully committed. “This transition allows the BEA to grow while we continue supporting their vital mission of advancing business ethics education,” Hendrickson said.

Artisan Boards of Omaha BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA SEMPEK SANDY ALBERS, OWNER

Charcuterie Pioneer

FORGING THE WAY FOR A NEW MARKET Until Sandy Albers came along, purchasing a charcuterie board meant a trip to the local grocery store. In 2019, Albers changed the game, opening Artisan Boards of Omaha at Shops of Legacy. “I didn’t know how people would respond to meat and cheese boards because they were just so used to getting them at a grocery store,” Albers said. “So it was introducing a different level of charcuterie that they weren’t used to seeing.”

Made fresh daily

While charcuterie has long been available at nice restaurants such as La Buvette, Albers created one of the first businesses in Omaha solely designed around this popular hors d’oeuvre. “Ours is all fresh,” Albers said. “They’re designed every single day, so it was elevating that look while still getting really good meats and cheeses.” Believing it would likely appeal to a specific demographic, Artisan Boards’ popularity caught her off-guard, she said. “I was happily surprised when it wasn’t only just white collar, it was blue collar and it was everything in between,” Albers said. “That made us utilize our price points so everyone could enjoy charcuterie, whether it’s just one of our small lunchables or whether it’s one of our large grazing boards.”

Widespread appeal

Albers smiled when she spoke of the other charcuterie businesses that have followed her path since starting Artisan Boards of Omaha.

“It just tickles me to see how I have inspired others that have opened or started charcuterie businesses,” she said. “I feel like their success is my success. I’m going to continue to forge the way and be a pioneer for the charcuterie industry here in Omaha and surrounding area. I’m really looking forward to seeing how everyone else follows along.” Continuing to blaze a path, Albers plans to become the first in Omaha to ship fresh charcuterie packages nationally.

‘Family legacy’

Most people start a business to make money and become successful, but in Albers’ case, the decision was personal. “I really wanted to leave a legacy to my kids and to my grandkids,” she said. “I have two adult children. I have six grandkids and one on the way, and I really wanted to have them run in here and say, ‘Grandma, can I work today?’ It’s passing down a legacy that can hopefully continue when I’m far gone.” That pride carries over to the popularity of the store, consistently named “Best in Omaha.” “To think that not only do people love the charcuterie but to be number one in such an amazing city that loves to eat is a big deal to us, so we’re very, very proud and honored,” Albers said. Albers’ advice about owning a business is to focus. “Shut out all of the outside noise,” Albers said, “take a deep breath, put your head down and work harder. Everything will turn out.” Page 8 • March 13, 2026

Pet Care with Love

ECO-FRIENDLY STORE BRINGS COMMUNITY TO PET CARE Watching how their parents handled the family business helped shape sisters Jessica Ellis and Whitney Kamish’s views of work, community and the importance of showing up for others. When it came time to open their own business, they knew they wanted to be around animals. That led to The Green Spot, an eco-friendly pet store, which felt like a natural fit, Ellis said. “Animals were always a big part of our lives,” Ellis said. “That path really took shape through our involvement in rescue and helping start Pug Partners of Nebraska.” While fostering pugs in need, the duo saw firsthand how much diet could impact animals’ health, from skin and digestion issues to overall well-being. “We saw an opportunity to do things differently,” Ellis said. “The Green Spot was created to offer better nutrition alongside honest, approachable education while also being a place where pet parents can truly spoil and celebrate their pets. Pets bring so much joy into our lives and we believe they deserve to be both healthy and happy.”

Adversity yields opportunity

Long-held plans to renovate the store happened to coincide with the COVID-19 pandemic. Knowing they needed to continue providing services for their pet customers, the sisters adapted the business by expanding its online presence as well as offering free delivery. “Instead of pulling back during an uncertain time, we leaned in and focused on how we could continue to serve our customers and support our team,” Ellis said. With community at the heart of what they do, the sisters support local rescues, shelters and nonprofit organizations through fundraising events and adoption partnerships as well as educational opportunities.

“Our goal has always been to be more than a store,” Ellis said. “We want to be a trusted resource and a welcoming space where people feel comfortable asking questions, learning and sharing in the joy their pets bring.”

Offer better care

The Green Spot focuses on items that the sisters believe help make caring for pets feel less intimidating and more enjoyable and they pair that with approachable guidance. They learned to rely on others in similar situations instead of trying to address issues on their own, building relationships with other independent retailers and gaining mentors along the way. “That community-over-competition mindset is still a core part of who we are today,” Ellis said. “We continue to lean on our networks for support and perspective, and we also try to share what we’ve learned with others who are earlier in their business journeys.”

Pet education

After 14 years in business, Ellis and Kamish appreciate the opportunity to share their love of animals with others. Hosting events such as a community pet health fair gives them a chance to combine education, preventative care and local partners in a way that reflects their desire to help pets live healthier, happier lives. Ellis said running a business has taught them to trust the process of building a business, something that doesn’t always move as quickly as one would like. “Focus on building a strong foundation, stay curious and trust that slow, intentional growth often leads to better long-term outcomes,” Ellis said. “Surround yourself with people who are willing to share knowledge, support you through challenges and celebrate wins alongside you.” Page 9 • March 13, 2026

Branding to a Tee

MAKING BUSINESSES LOOK GOOD SINCE 1982 When Barbara Weddle purchased Ink Images Custom Apparel from Susan “The T-Shirt Lady” Hawley in 2023, ownership passed hands but the passion for the business stayed the same. In fact, Hawley stayed on staff to ensure a smooth transition and to allow her to continue to work in a business she had poured so much of herself into. Weddle was already familiar with Hawley and her business long before she and her husband Willie made the decision to buy it. Weddle has a knack for embroidery, and would sometimes do embroidery work for Hawley, but a few years ago, Hawley brought up the idea of the Weddles buying the company. The couple discussed the idea for about a year before they decided to move forward with the purchase.

Learning on the job

The company creates t-shirts for schools, churches and other community organizations, but Willie said that he gets most excited when they make shirts for sports teams. A retired banker, Willie transitioned into the role of business owner by taking on the task of learning how to use and service the equipment used by Ink Images Custom Apparel. Despite having the advantage of the previous owner nearby to consult with, Willie nonetheless researched the equipment

online to get a better understanding of how it worked and how to keep it running. “I went on the internet and watched YouTube videos, and here we are,” he said. “I’m almost an expert now.” One of the immediate improvements that the new owners leaned into was to maximize technology, seeing that the machines already at work in the shop were not being used to the fullest. Willie said the capabilities of the business’ technology are practically “unlimited.”

Follow the money

Looking ahead, the Weddles said they want to continue to grow the business while exploring new technology that will enhance their capabilities. Learning how to most effectively utilize the existing equipment and focusing on community engagement have helped the Weddles enjoy their business ownership experience so far. If Willie were to offer a piece of advice to aspiring business owners, it would be “prepare for the financial aspect.” “You want to do those things in the community that are very important, but still, the bottom line is you have to make money in the business for business to be successful,” he said. Maplewood Lanes BY TAMSEN BUTLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA SEMPEK JEANNE BELITZ, OWNER

‘Original Social Network’

MAPLEWOOD LANES IS THIRD-GENERATION BUSINESS Maplewood Lanes General Manager Jeanne Belitz shares her name with her mother, the company’s owner. As such, the younger Belitz is often called “Junior” by Maplewood Lanes customers, some of whom watched her grow up in the bowling alley. The family’s bowling business was started by Belitz’s grandfather and some investors. Though she grew up around the family business and enjoyed it, she left to earn a degree in hospitality management, starting a career in hotels. “In 2008, I received a call from my mom and it was just time to come home and help out,” she said. Like most small businesses, the pandemic presented a big challenge for Maplewood Lanes. Social distancing and the public’s general fear of being out among other people had a profound impact on the traffic and made a big impact on how Belitz viewed her customers. Today, she credits them with keeping the business afloat during a stressful time. “It was a very emotional time for me, being a family business. There’s a lot of pressure on you,” she said. “You really learn who your biggest fans are.”

Maplewood Lanes would have been dead without the support of its league bowlers, she said, who were willing to adapt to new rules and stagger their play times so everyone was socially distanced. “They would say, ‘What do we need to do?’” she said. “It was wonderful that they helped us maintain the social distancing and we were able to recover actually pretty quickly just with the support of our community.” While now recovered from the pandemic, Belitz has definitely noticed a drop in corporate groups coming in for parties and team building. She surmised that since more people now work from home, fewer companies arrange gettogethers for companywide teams. Maplewood Lanes also shifted to an online booking system during the pandemic and that system proves valuable nowadays. Customers can reserve their lanes, and even their shoes, online before stepping foot into the building. It doesn’t surprise Belitz that Maplewood Lanes has endured for so many years despite a recession and a pandemic. She said bowling is often referred to as a

The Nail Shop BY TAMSEN BUTLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA SEMPEK DIDI OLSEN, OWNER

Naturally Different

RELAXING EXPERIENCE WITHOUT THE CHEMICALS Didi Olsen grew up around nail shops, her parents, aunts and uncles all owning them. She remembers watching her mom come home at the end of a shift, stopping at the entryway at her home, and removing her clothes before walking all the way into the house because of the chemical residue on her garments. As a girl she understood she was trying to protect the family from the chemicals her mom had been exposed to all day as she applied acrylics for clients. As Olsen grew up, she wondered if there might be a better, healthier method for nails, one that didn’t require nail technicians to drop their clothes at the door when they arrived at home. “I felt that there was a need to do something that was different and more healthy,” she said. The Nail Shop has an emphasis on natural nail care, thanks to a commitment to deliberate health and safety protocols that shun acrylics, UV-cured gel and dip. It’s a decided departure from other shops within the industry, and that’s the point. The Nail Shop’s unique emphasis on health and relaxation sets the shop apart, providing a relaxing experience for clients without exposure to unnecessary chemicals.

It’s not just about fewer chemicals, either. The same safety protocols that were put into place during the COVID-19 pandemic are still in use at The Nail Shop, where plexiglass barriers and extra sanitizing are standard. The pandemic was a challenging time, requiring the family business to close down for approximately three months, largely in response to employee concerns. “During that time, in 2020, everybody was nervous about being in front of anybody else,” Olsen said. “So, we decided to stay closed [longer] because our staff was very reluctant to be put in that position.” Business has since bounced back. Olsen is wiser from the valuable lessons during that challenging time. Olsen said the extra hygiene and safety precautions have paid off, and that it wasn’t a huge disruption to bring everything up to pandemic standards. She said management continues to lean into providing a safe and relaxing experience for the benefit of clients and staff alike. And, just as she imagined was possible, Olsen doesn’t have to shed her clothes at the door when she arrives home every day.

Say Hey There BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBRA S. KAPLAN MIKALA HARDEN, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Creating an Authentic Voice MARKETING COMPANY PROMOTES NONPROFITS Rather than choose a more traditional name for her marketing company, Mikala Harden opted for the title of a rap song when she started Say Hey There in 2014. “At the time, I was leaving the agency to start my own thing and it resonated as something more to me, more of just an ode to independence and being badass and doing things your own way,” Harden said. “There was also a natural connection to marketing and communications, ‘Say, hey there.’ It’s kind of a fun play on words.” While it may be a whimsical approach to a name, Harden’s work is anything but. “I wanted something more sustainable, which sounds crazy, because building a business from the ground up is a lot of effort and work and takes a lot of guts,” she said. “I wanted to shape my own culture and call my own shots and be a leader, leading with the vision that I had in mind.” Focusing on working solely with nonprofits, community development and enrichment organizations proved a wise move, Harden said. “Stepping into that niche was absolutely the right move even though it can be scary to turn away other things,” she said. “What I found was that when I did that, it allowed me to manifest the work that I did want and opened up more room for that in my production schedule. Now I’m able to focus on the work that I enjoy doing, that I’m good at, which is storytelling and community engagement and brand awareness over traditional sales-driven marketing.”

Embracing DEI

With a business climate that has seen companies large and small move away from programs that focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, Harden embraces it. “I think DEI is extremely important for the nonprofits that I work for and it’s also extremely important to me,” she said. “I want to work with organizations that also believe that and don’t fall for propaganda that says diversity or inclusion is a negative thing. “I think when we focus on inclusive language and imagery and messaging, ultimately what happens is we cultivate better community.” Early in her career, Harden learned establishing clarity and workable timelines proved successful as a freelance marketer. “A lot of times creatives aren’t good at business and people who are good at business aren’t good at creative,” she said. “If you feel like you have both of those personality traits, you would really succeed at freelancing or being in that space of working for yourself.” In 2025, Say Hey There was recognized by the American Marketing Association’s Omaha chapter for its work in the integrated nonprofits marketing category. “That was really exciting for me because integrated marketing and orchestrating the arts together and working across a variety of mediums to push a campaign is exactly what I like to do,” Harden said. Looking back, she said she’d like to be able to comfort the version of herself that felt such anxiety over taking the leap of faith in entrepreneurship. “I would hug her and say, ‘I know you’re terrified, but once you step into this, you’ll never look back,’” she said. “‘It’s going to be the best thing you ever do.’” Page 13 • March 13, 2026

Simplifi Automated Environments BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBRA S. KAPLAN DOUG DUSHAN, CO-MANAGING PARTNER

Art of Automation

PERSONALIZED SERVICE MEETS CUTTING-EDGE HOME TECH It’s not often that an entrepreneur creates a business with the plan to not grow as large as possible, but Simplifi Automated Environments isn’t a typical startup. “I think there’s a tendency of any entrepreneur to continue to grow a business and grow and grow and grow,” said Doug Dushan, co-managing partner. “I think one thing that Derrick (Potts, founder) and I have discovered is that in our industry, if you grow too large, when you get to the point you have to give a client an 800 number to reach your organization for help, you’re starting to lose.” Potts founded Simplifi in Kansas City and recruited Dushan, his one-time boss, to join him by opening the Omaha location.

Personalized customer service

Managing lifestyle technology is critical to successful customer service, Dushan said. Automating home technology, from security systems to entertainment and lighting, is more than just programming a remote and it’s important for Simplifi’s team members to be the calm in a storm when clients have issues. “(Our) desire was to keep something really simple, keep it where a client can reach out to the owners of the company at any time,” Dushan said. “We’re the guys you know. “Our clients, homeowners, are inherently easily frustrated by home technology. I think it’s really important not to overdesign or overengineer systems, keep them really simple and carefully listen to customers.” After helping startups in Omaha, Dushan created home

technology experiences in Aspen, Colorado, for more than three years. His clients included athletes and business moguls. Working with some of the world’s greatest architects helped focus his attention to customer needs, he said, something he’d bring back to Omaha to establish Simplifi’s footprint. “One of the exciting things of bringing that knowledge of Aspen is it’s one of the most cutting-edge luxury residential markets in the United States,” he said. “I saw some distinct Omaha-centric reasons why it was timely to come back, so about a year and a half ago, I started building the Omaha market.” Dushan’s appreciation of art allows him to offer an aesthetic approach to home technology. “I think that the folly of our industry is it’s so fixated on the gear and not attuned to the overall vision,” he said. “We really believe in working with the other trades to make sure that it’s a seamless process.”

Enough is enough

If he could work on a project with his younger self, Dushan said he’d suggest knowing his limits. “It’s been a hard lesson to learn, but one that I feel pretty deeply now, is to realize when enough is enough,” he said. “I think that entrepreneurial spirit is one that teaches you to continue growing at all costs. The fact of the matter is, there are significant costs to growth. I think trying to grow is good, but we need to keep our eye on the ball. It’s not ‘Is our revenue growing?’ but ‘Are we deepening relationships?’” Page 14 • March 13, 2026

Teapot Runneth Over

TEA SHOP BRINGS WORLD DRINK TO OMAHA While tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, Omaha hadn’t quite seen the likes of a spot like The Tea Smith when Tim and Paulette Smith opened their first location in 2004. People wondered if it was an Asian tearoom or they were hosting tea parties. Some people had other ideas. “People didn’t get it,” Smith said. “’You mean T-shirts?’ People here had not run across a store that was devoted to tea.” The public was in for a surprise, he said. Unlike coffee shops where customers place their order and baristas rush to complete it, tea shops are a different creature. “Tea takes three to five minutes to brew, so you slow down and relax a bit with it,” he said “We’ve got a cafe that seats 25 to 30 people and tea is best when shared. You learn that overseas if you travel on business.” The Smiths’ venture into the tea business resulted from Paulette’s love of the drink. Traveling on business, Tim needed to buy a birthday gift for her so he picked up a teapot and loose leaves. Once home, his wife had him try some tea. “I was pretty much a coffee drinker,” Smith said. “I thought tea was nothing more than brown water in a bag. (That tea had) some character.”

Bringing tea to Omaha

Intrigued, Smith researched the internet for more tea choices. As he learned more about tea and the tea industry, he said he became interested in building the industry in Omaha. “I saw something,” he said. “This is really good stuff. There’s a lot of health benefits to it. I thought it was something that was actually

starting to trend in the U.S.” After selling his existing business, the Smiths decided to open The Tea Smith. The first location, near 168th St. and West Center Road, struggled in attracting business. “We had a brand-new business, a brand-new concept, in an area that wasn’t developed,” Smith said. They opened a second store near 78th and Cass streets less than a year later and business started to grow, Smith said. The Tea Smith has gained popularity among a variety of people since, people who enjoy sharing tea time at the store. First-time visitors can feel overwhelmed seeing about 200 varieties of tea on the shelves. “Smithies,” as employees are affectionately known, help educate the clientele on options they may find enjoyable. “We really make it an environment where people feel welcomed and friendly to come in,” Smith said. “You don’t do that alone. You do it with the people that you work with and the people who support you, that feeling of community.”

Online sales

The Tea Smith sells tea products online, Smith said. Using a distribution center located in southwest Omaha, the business has also received its organic certification. Of everything that this journey has taught him, it is the importance of connecting with others, be it at tea time or in running a business. “Everybody that you work with is part of the journey and you learn from them,” Smith said. “You learn from your successes, and you learn from your mistakes.” Page 15 • March 13, 2026

Red Cross Month HONORING GROWING VOLUNTEERISM

As the nation marks Red Cross Month this March, the American Red Cross is honoring the growing number of people across generations who are stepping forward to support their communities when help can’t wait. New Red Cross data highlights a nationwide surge in volunteerism, reflecting how individuals of all ages are strengthening communities and caring for one another. Volunteers make up 90% of the Red Cross workforce, spanning every generation from Gen Z to the Silent Generation and demonstrating that service has no age limit and that every action makes a meaningful difference. Over the past three years, the number of Red Cross volunteers has grown by nearly 25%, totaling more than 325,000 people nationwide. This growth mirrors the country’s broader post‑pandemic rebound in community service and highlights a remarkable trend: Gen Z is now the fastest‑growing group of Red Cross volunteers, driven largely by growth in student-led Red Cross clubs. “Generation after generation, our community has shown that compassion is one of its greatest strengths,” said Jill Orton, American Red Cross of Nebraska-Iowa Region CEO. “In moments when help

is needed, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to offer care, comfort and hope. Their commitment reflects a shared humanitarian spirit that connects us across time and continues to make a meaningful difference through our lifesaving mission, one that has supported families for more than half of our country’s 250-year history.” Red Cross Month began during World War II as a national call to action to address growing humanitarian needs. Over time, it has evolved into an annual community tradition underscoring the enduring power of compassion and what people can accomplish together. This tradition remains strong today. For 145 years, the American Red Cross has been part of communities across the country, a legacy made possible by the generous spirit of volunteers who come together in moments of need. Their actions continue to bring communities together and ensure that hope is never far away. During Red Cross Month, the Red Cross honors how people today deliver support when help can’t wait. Interested persons can visit redcross.org to get involved by volunteering, making a financial donation, giving blood or taking a class in lifesaving skills.

BUILT JEO

BY DAISY HUTZELL -RODMAN JEO Consulting CEO Rob Brigham sat in a well-lit confere nce room in the compan y’s Omaha offices, where large window s let in the view Road to the north of West Dodge as well as the building to the east. Brigham himself TD Ameritr ade added to this light. The executive who has been with JEO for nearly 30 years spoke with enthusia sm about his company they do. and the work “Unless you are literally in the middle of nowhere can’t see a single and you cell tower, you can’t see a power line, can’t look up and you see an airplane, everythin g’s touched engineering,” Brigham by said. That enthusia sm isn’t what you’d expect from someone who never set out to lead an engineer ing firm. His path began by growing up across the street from JEO principal Ron Bottorff, who offered him summer work on a survey when Brigham was crew graduating high school. “It’s a good thing there was a dumb end of the tape for to hold,” Brigham me said, recalling his early days. Those summers proved formativ e. While pursuing finance degree, Brigham his worked on crews surveys for construc doing preliminary tion projects and staking. After law school, he clerked for an attorney. Both the attorney’s office and JEO made him job offers nearly 30 years ago and chose the engineer he ing firm, saying what drew him back were the people. It was also an opportun ity to bring business an excellent firm acumen to that had engineer s handling IT, accountin and HR. From business g manager, Brigham moved into a chief financial officer position and in 2007, at age CEO of what was 36, he became then a 70-year-old firm. He said his degrees helped as he rose through the ranks, especially law school that helped him how to think. BRIGHAM CONTIN

HazCom Study 237 VIOLATIONS IN NEBRASKA, 271 IN IOWA

Nebraska recently ranked 20th in neglecting to tell workers about hazardous chemicals, according to a study by Trace One, an organization that specializes in product lifecycle management for several industries including the chemical industry. The study noted that in Nebraska, the most common industry for violations was the construction industry, and in Iowa, the most common industry was manufacturing. The most common cause in both states was a lack of a written safety plan. The study found 5.5 violations were reported in Nebraska for every 100,000 workers. These violations accounted for 6.6% of all HazCom inspections and resulted in $253,505 in fines. In Iowa (ranked 31st), 4.1 violations were reported for every 100,000 workers, which accounted for 5.1% of all HazCom inspections and resulted in $487,962 in fines. Millions of U.S. workers handle, store or work near hazardous chemicals every day from cleaning solvents and industrial adhesives to flammable gases and corrosive substances. Without proper training, clear labeling, and accessible safety data sheets, employees may not fully understand the health risks they face, including respiratory illness, chemical burns or fire and explosion hazards. Federal regulators and occupational health experts widely view hazard communication as a foundational component of workplace safety because it determines whether workers have the information needed to protect themselves. To address these risks, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) established the Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) in 1983. Often referred to as the “right-to-know” rule, the standard requires employers to classify chemical hazards, label containers, maintain safety data sheets, and train workers on safe handling procedures. Yet more than four decades after its adoption, HazCom remains one of OSHA’s most frequently cited workplace safety standards violations, indicating persistent compliance gaps across industries and regions. To identify where U.S. employers are failing to warn workers about chemical dangers, Trace One — an SDS, regulatory compliance, and PLM software company serving the chemicals, food and beverage, and cosmetics sectors — analyzed OSHA enforcement data from 2021 through 2025. The analysis investigates which states and industries account for the most HazCom violations, as well as how these citation trends have evolved over time.
