In conjunction with the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research, the Aksarben Foundation in its Nebraska Tech Workforce Dashboard noted ENGINEERING ON PAGE 11

In 2003, an Army captain with a freshly minted graduate degree in water resources engineering arrived in Iraq to find no Gulf Region Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers existed, the unit responsible for restarting irrigation systems, power plants and shattered infrastructure across the country. By the time John W. Henderson left, there was one. He’d helped build it.

That same instinct still runs through HDR, the Omaha-based architecture and engineering firm Henderson now leads as chairman and chief executive officer. Raised in the Black Hills and trained as a civil engineer at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Henderson spent nearly 24 years in Army Corps of Engineers leadership, including three combat tours, before serving as assistant secretary of the Air Force. He joined HDR in 2021 expecting to run a survey crew or sweep floors. Instead, then-CEO Eric Keen made him chief administrative officer, a crash course in the enterprise he’d later lead.

Today, HDR is among the largest employeeowned architecture and engineering firms in the country, and Henderson is focused on keeping that culture intact as the company

GALA HONORS ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE, LEADERSHIP, SERVICE

ACEC Nebraska recognized the state’s top engineering talent at its awards gala in late March. The annual event celebrates professionals and projects that demonstrate technical skill, strong leadership, and a commitment to public service — qualities the organization says are central to the field.

The awards highlight engineering’s broader influence, spotlighting work that combines precision, originality, and integrity. Organizers say the goal is to set a standard others in the profession will strive to meet.

Beyond recognizing individual achievements, ACEC Nebraska frames the gala as a tribute to engineering’s lasting contribution to communities — and to the ongoing innovation and service that define the field.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

New CWS teams spark strong sales

Half of this year’s NCAA Men’s College World Series field had not visited Omaha in decades or had never played in the tournament before, raising questions for local restaurants about whether unfamiliar fan bases would travel and spend. Early in the series, restaurants around the baseball village reported strong business as fans clustered at familiar gathering spots near Charles Schwab Field. Operators say the pattern is holding: regardless of who makes the field, the CWS keeps delivering heavy traffic.

Old Market merchants gear for CWS crowds

Downtown Omaha groups encouraged merchants near Charles Schwab Field to adjust staffing and hours for heavier CWS volumes, supported by updated guides and visitor information published this month. Businesses were urged to plan around road closures and transit changes to capture pre- and post-game foot traffic.

Lincoln launches library fund drive

Lincoln officials launched a public fundraising campaign for the city’s new Central Public Library, calling it the community’s next major civic landmark. The private goal has risen from $18 million to $26.5 million due to inflation and construction costs, with $21.3 million already pledged, about 80% of the target. The $58.8 million project at 11th and O streets will be financed through infrastructure bonds, interfund loans and private donations, with opening planned for 2028.

Omaha OKs Woodsonia Saddle TIF

The City of Omaha advanced a redevelopment and tax - increment financing agreement with Woodsonia Saddle LLC, according to June 17 public notices. The action secures a key incentive package for the project and adds to the metro’s pipeline of TIF-backed commercial and mixed-use developments.

Redevelopment cases keep moving through City Hall

Omaha’s June 17 legal - notice docket included additional redevelopment and zoning matters headed for City Council review. The steady flow of cases suggests developers continue to push projects through approvals despite a higher-cost capital environment.

Omaha office vacancy stays below 8%

Omaha’s office market ended the first quarter with a 7.7% vacancy rate across roughly 48.5 million square feet, according to NAI NP Dodge. The market posted about 79,000 square feet of positive absorption over the past year, with landlords relying more on concessions to retain and attract tenants.

Industrial remains Omaha’s strongest property type

Industrial real estate continues to outperform other asset classes in Omaha, with low vacancy and ongoing construction in key logistics corridors. Strong demand for distribution and warehouse space near interstate interchanges is helping support land values and new projects.

Banks push back on proposed capital rules

U.S. banks made a final push this week to scale back parts of the Federal Reserve’s proposed “Basel III endgame” capital framework as the consultation period closed. Industry groups warn that higher capital requirements on trading books and unused credit card lines could reduce lending capacity and market-making, a backdrop regional and community banks in Nebraska are watching closely.

Rate-cap lawsuit could affect bankfintech models

Banking and consumer - credit trade associations sued Oregon officials June 15 over a law that would cap rates on certain loans made by out-of-state state-chartered banks. The case, centered on federal preemption and interstate commerce questions, is being closely watched because it could shape how states regulate bank-fintech partnerships and higher-yield credit products.

State economic agency promotes 2026 Governor’s Summit

In a June update ahead of registration deadlines, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development promoted the 2026 Governor’s Summit and a second annual Youth Summit as key convenings for business, ag and community leaders. Officials are positioning the events as forums to coordinate on workforce, housing and investment priorities heading into 2027.

State spotlights ed-tech startup in growth programs

The Department of Economic Development recently highlighted a Nebraska ed-tech startup that helps students improve writing while guarding against overreliance on AI tools. The company’s participation in state export and startup grant programs is being used as an example of how Nebraska aims to grow homegrown technology firms.

City and county actions shape local business climate

Public notices in June show both the Omaha City Council and Douglas County Board continuing hearings on ordinances and county-level measures that affect land use, infrastructure and budget priorities. Those decisions, while procedural, help define the long - term operating environment for metro employers and developers.

Grow Omaha highlights new coaster, CRE projects

A June 13 “Uncut” episode from a local business radio show spotlighted Fun-Plex’s new Mammoth roller coaster, described as the largest coaster ever built in Nebraska, alongside projects such as Gretna Landing Health Center, FNBO’s downtown apartment conversion and progress on the Mutual of Omaha tower. Together, the updates underscore how tourism, healthcare and multifamily development are driving much of the metro’s current project activity.

FNBO expands equity stake in Coca-Cola

First National Bank of Omaha increased its holdings in The Coca-Cola Company by just over 40% in the most recent quarter, boosting its position to about 125,000 shares. The move, disclosed in mid-June filings, reflects a larger bet on a marquee consumer brand by one of Nebraska’s biggest banking institutions.

Tech and M&A deals shape backdrop for Omaha firms

As of June 19, national tech coverage highlights continuing regulatory debates and large-scale acquisitions — including a multibillion - dollar cybersecurity deal announced by Accenture — illustrating how digital transformation is driving corporate strategy. Omaha-area IT, consulting and financial firms are operating in that same environment as they pitch clients on risk management and modernization.

City eases commissary rules for food trucks

The Omaha City Council voted this week to remove a requirement that food trucks return to a licensed commissary kitchen every 24 hours. Operators had argued the rule would complicate multi - day events such as concerts, festivals and the NCAA Men’s College World Series. The change gives mobile vendors more flexibility while still requiring access to approved kitchen facilities under city health guidelines.

Boys Town hospital expansion underway

Boys Town National Research Hospital says construction on its 254,000-square-foot expansion at 144th and Pacific streets has moved into visible above-ground work, with a 200 - ton crane and steel framing now in place. HENDERSON BRINGS COMBAT LESSONSTO HDR’S HELM

HENDERSON, FROM PAGE 01

hires hundreds of employees every year. Here, he talks trust, technology and the one thing about HDR he’d never trade away.

MBJ: You went back to SD Mines for your master’s in 2001 while still on active duty, after company command in Korea and Alaska, and right before your first Iraq deployment. What made that the right moment to pause for a technical credential rather than push forward operationally?

Henderson: We made that decision before 9/11, right after my second command in Alaska, with our first child on the way. The Army funds that kind of schooling in exchange for utilization time, so I focused on water resources, and they sent me to Vicksburg, Mississippi, as a hydraulics engineer. Then 9/11 happened, and that tour turned into deploying to Iraq to restart irrigation systems, power plants, roads and bridges. We helped set up what became the Gulf Region Division of the Corps of Engineers; it didn’t exist before we got there. That’s why an engineer wants to serve in the Army: the chance to rebuild a nation.

MBJ: You commanded Charlie Company of the 864th Engineer Battalion at Fort Wainwright in 1999, then came back more than a decade later to command the entire 864th and deploy it to Afghanistan. What did you know about that battalion going in that an outside commander wouldn’t have, and did it change how you led them?

Henderson: I’d been a subordinate commander in that battalion years earlier in Alaska, so I understood how it operated: survey, design, the concrete detachment, how staff provided support. When I took command a decade later, I already had a mental framework. The battalion was coming off its fourth deployment and heading into its fifth; seasoned soldiers. Part of the job was training troops to be both builders and warriors, bulldozer operators carrying M16s, because engineers self-secure in theater. We brought everybody home safely.

MBJ: Secretary (of Defense James N.) Mattis wanted people who knew their business, and Secretary of the Air Force, Heather Wilson wanted an engineer in that role. When you got to the Pentagon, what did you find that suggested they were right to look for both in the same person?

Henderson: It reinforced exactly what they said. Dr. Will Roper, who ran weapons acquisition, was one of the best in the world at it, out of MIT Lincoln Labs and Georgia Tech. These weren’t political picks. Not long after I arrived, Secretary Mattis pulled me aside and said, “You were chosen for a reason, and I have high expectations because I know you can perform. You’re not here to think about your next political move, and you’ve got 1,000 days left in this administration.” That was about as Mattis as it gets.

MBJ: When you first approached (Former HDR Chairman and CEO) Eric Keen about joining HDR, you told him you’d run a survey crew, sweep the floors; you just wanted to be on a winning team. He made you chief administrative officer. What did that vantage point show you about HDR before you ever had to run it?

Henderson: I got an enterprise view of the business I wouldn’t have

I describe trust as an equation: competence, commitment and character. Nothing complex happens until that trust is established. You don’t earn a client’s trust with a golf outing. You earn it by delivering quality work, over and over.

had otherwise: IT, data infrastructure, regional and corporate leadership, not just project delivery. I picked up safety and occupational health right as COVID hit, after a year managing the same problem for the Air Force, overseeing 180 installations that couldn’t go remote since you can’t run a missile silo from home. We decentralized decision authority, trusting local leaders to balance compliance with what made sense for them. I brought that same approach to HDR.

MBJ: The Kansas City Chiefs have retooled their roster multiple times — lost key players, changed coordinators — and kept winning. As a fan, you’ve watched (head coach) Andy Reid sustain a championship culture through constant change. How do you solve that same problem at HDR as you grow and transition leadership?

Henderson: Eric Keen built a phenomenal team, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by it. The real challenge is propagating the culture as people retire or get promoted into new roles. This is our 30th year of employee ownership, and we’ve hired about 7,000 new employees in the past five years while turning over 7% to 8% annually and growing 10% to 12% on top of that. Every new hire has to be brought into a culture of ownership; not just shares, but the risks, too. I describe trust as an equation: competence, commitment and character. Nothing complex happens until that trust is established. You don’t earn a client’s trust with a golf outing. You earn it by delivering quality work, over and over.

MBJ: You’ve been careful to say HDR is not an AI company and not a data analytics company, but you’re investing heavily in both to accelerate traditional services. Where is the line between using technology as a tool and letting it reshape what HDR actually is?

Henderson: There is a line, and our philosophy is to be a fast follower, not an early adopter. Being on the bleeding edge is expensive, and we owe our employee-owners careful stewardship of our resources. We pilot tools that help us deliver better, faster or higher-value work, optimizing a design to minimize a project’s carbon footprint, for instance. We want every employee to master their craft, including the tools that go with it, not worry that AI will take their job. We’ve been intentional about not becoming a technology company the way some competitors have, building products in-house to resell. We’re a partner, not a vendor.

MBJ: ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and the late Dusty Hill grew their beards organically in the 1970s, and when Gillette offered them $1 million each to shave them off, they said no. A simple, painless act done by millions of men every day, and they walked away from the money. What would you refuse to shave off of HDR’s brand, no matter what someone put on the table?

Henderson: The center of it for me is the culture, how we cultivate technical expertise. The training, the professional development, the scholarships, the upward mobility we provide. That’s nonnegotiable. We’ve done about 75 acquisitions over the years, and we’ll say no to a deal, or a client, if we don’t think the people coming in will gravitate to an employee-owned culture. That mismatch is a dealbreaker.

Engineering Her Path

RICHARDSON IS SECOND WOMAN TO LEAD ACEC NEBRASKA

Lisa Richardson hates toll roads. They reward people who already have money and punish those who don’t, she said, sliding briefly off-topic during an interview about her new role atop ACEC Nebraska. It’s a quick window into how she thinks: an engineer’s instinct to examine a system, decide whether it’s fair, and say so. Then she laughs and gets back to the matter at hand which, this year, involves serving as only the second woman in the history of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Nebraska to lead the organization. Richardson grew up in Alliance where, by her account, all of her relatives drove trains. Her mother, Sandy Snow, spent years as a hairdresser before retraining as a railroad engineer at 35. It was her junior high math and science

teacher, Sheila Schmeits, who pointed her toward a different kind of engineer, the technical kind. Richardson didn’t know what that meant at first; she knew Legos and she liked building things. It turned out there was a profession built around exactly that.

College tested the path almost immediately. Richardson failed her first calculus exam and considered changing majors before her mother refused to let her drop the class. She stuck it out, earned her civil engineering degree from the University of Nebraska and built an early career in roadway design, traffic studies and transportation planning. A master’s degree in community and regional planning came later, completed while working full time and raising two

— LISA RICHARDSON

children The process reshaped how she saw her field, that infrastructure could exist in harmony with the environment around it rather than overrunning it.

That belief carried her into more than two decades at HDR, where she now serves as a vice president and senior project manager after leading the firm’s North Central Region Environmental Sciences Practice. Over 24 years at the firm, Richardson has worked on more than 300 projects, according to Ann Williams, HDR’s Nebraska-Iowa area manager. Two stand out: first, the US-275 expressway program between Norfolk and Omaha, where Richardson served as project manager or environmental lead across three primary NDOT projects representing 50 miles of roadway toward an eventual four-lane expressway.

The other, NDOT’s assumption of federal environmental review authority, was a program-level effort that made Nebraska the ninth state to take on that responsibility. Richardson now leads a roughly 15-person environmental section in Nebraska and Iowa.

“She mentors staff toward excellence, and she sets a high bar,” Williams said.

Climbing the chairs

That same drive carried her onto the ACEC Nebraska board six years ago, where she has served as state director, secretary and treasurer after chairing both the NDOT Partnership and Water, Environment and Energy committees. It is the kind of methodical climb through the chairs that the organization’s presidency requires, an eight-plus-year commitment Richardson said she entered with her eyes open.

“When you make a commitment, you live up to it,” she said.

What she hadn’t fully registered, until ACEC Nebraska executive director Jeanne McClure told her this year, was the size of the gap she was about to close. Richardson knew of Linda Beauchamp, the organization’s first female president and a fellow transportation engineer prominent early in Richardson’s career. She didn’t know it had been decades since Beauchamp’s term, with no woman following her into the role until now.

“It probably hasn’t quite sunk in,” Richardson said.

Asked what ACEC has and hasn’t done well for women in the profession, she didn’t dodge the second half. The organization’s committees are open to anyone, she said, and McClure has spent years recruiting women into ACEC’s ranks, including Richardson herself. But the long stretch between a first female president and a second shows the work isn’t finished. She’s quick to add that the wait likely won’t repeat itself; another woman currently sits on the ACEC Nebraska board, positioned to follow her.

“I think that ACEC makes it possible for people to participate at the level that they’re able to give,” Richardson said, citing the range of involvement open to members, from committee work to sessions with public-sector partners such as NDOT and the cities of Omaha and Lincoln.

Richardson has lived that flexibility herself, working part time while her children were young, and points to Williams — who moved from full-time engineer to parttime parent to stay-at-home mom and back to full-time area manager — as proof the path doesn’t have to run straight to count.

“Women need to support women,” Richardson said, noting that the small numbers

of women in engineering historically pushed those who were there toward solidarity rather than competition.

Part of the reason those numbers stayed small for so long, she said, traces back to who girls saw doing the job in the first place. She pointed to the Peanuts comic strip, which had no Black characters for roughly its first decade until the cartoonist introduced one, Franklin, a character Richardson said later inspired a young Black reader to become a cartoonist himself.

She’s watched the same pattern play out in engineering: children of engineers tend to become engineers, which is why ACEC’s mentoring efforts now target students before entering college where switching into the field becomes far harder than starting out there in the first place.

“If you can see it, you can be it,” Richardson said. “They say that all the time, and it is true.”

Building what’s next

Richardson’s reach now extends to Washington D.C. as well as Lincoln. She took part in ACEC Nebraska’s inaugural federal fly-in in 2024, when the state’s full congressional delegation met with the organization’s members and said the turnout “showed strong support for infrastructure.” Her message to lawmakers hasn’t changed since: infrastructure funding has to keep pace with need, particularly with a federal transportation reauthorization bill now moving through Congress.

“Infrastructure really runs this country,” she said.

That same conviction is steering the next chapter of her presidency. McClure said Richardson has become “a champion of a new ACEC Nebraska initiative launching in 2027, Engineering Game Day,” which will bring seventh-grade students to Memorial Stadium to learn about engineering through a Nebraska football game day. This, in partnership with what McClure calls “the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering, the only engineering college in Nebraska and the state’s primary intellectual resource for engineering instruction, research, and outreach,” joins ACEC’s existing MEET mentoring program, which has roughly doubled since launching in the 2022-2023 academic year and now approaches 100 student mentees.

The Game Day event launches alongside two anniversaries — ACEC Nebraska turns 60, and the college turns 150 — with Lincoln Public Schools as its first partner district.

For Richardson, the program is an extension of the same belief that explains her own path and, in a sense, her presidency, that people become what they can see themselves becoming. It’s why she tells young women weighing the field to apply for jobs even when they don’t check every box, a habit she’s noticed men adopt more readily than women.

“Be confident in your abilities, both technically and as a leader,” Richardson said. “Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, whether you think you’re ready or not.”

It’s advice that traces back to her own record: a woman from a railroad town who didn’t know what kind of engineer she wanted to be until someone told her; who failed a test and kept going anyway; and who now stands second in a line of leadership she’s determined won’t take another six decades to grow.

ENGINEERING,

that while tech sector jobs in the metro have fallen between 2017 and 2025, positions in software engineering, data and AI are a bright spot, increasing significantly in the past decade.

Such technology is also an undeniable factor when it comes to who and how engineering firms are recruiting and how educational institutions are readying students for life after graduation.

There is certainly no shortage of potential projects for the right engineering talent, especially in the transportation, infrastructure and water space, according to ACEC Nebraska Executive Director Jeanne McClure.

“Many of those projects were made possible by the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which authorized major transportation and infrastructure funding through fiscal year 2026,” she said. “We are now seeing much of that funding move from planning and design into construction. For engineering firms, that means the next federal surface transportation package is extremely important.”

McClure said ACEC Nebraska is watching the BUILD America 250 Act, a multiyear infrastructure funding measure that would provide the certainty for clients to advance long-term projects. The vertical infrastructure market was also described as “substantial and growing,” especially in Omaha and Lincoln.

“In Omaha alone, recent market data showed millions of square feet of office, retail and industrial space under construction,” she said. “Those buildings require engineering expertise from planning and design through building systems, sustainability, renovation and long-term maintenance.”

The workforce that powers these projects is ACEC Nebraska’s top priority.

“We are working to support the engineering talent pipeline from K-12 through college and into the profession,” McClure said. “That includes our Mentoring Emerging Engineers Together (MEET) mentoring program with the University of NebraskaLincoln College of Engineering, scholarship fundraising with the engineering clubs in Lincoln and Omaha, and our ‘You Can Become an Engineer’ video series, which introduces young students to the impact and excitement of engineering.”

Ultimately, she said, ACEC Nebraska’s focus is strengthening the full pipeline from student awareness to college retention to professional practice.

Equipping tomorrow’s engineers

The state’s only college of engineering experienced record enrollment in 2025-2026, with overall enrollment increasing 3.9% from the year prior to 4,477 students, according to Dr.

Lance C. Pérez, dean of the college.

“The outlook for engineering continues to be positive as it has been for several years,” he said. “The College of Engineering has a 2017-2030 strategic plan, with the goal of enrolling 5,000 undergraduate students.”

At the time of this writing, Pérez noted the college was finalizing a new undergraduate major in industrial engineering following the debut of another major in robotics engineering in fall 2025.

“This interdisciplinary major offers a core of courses from the school of computing, the electrical and computer engineering department, and the mechanical and materials engineering department, with several focus areas to choose from,” he said.

Pérez also referred to an all-encompassing AI initiative, Pioneering Responsible AI for Research and Innovative Education (PRAIRIE). The program is the first big step toward the university’s goal of establishing itself as a leader in responsible AI integration across research, teaching and practice.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES, A TECH-SAVVY ENGINEERING WORKFORCE

Engineering is a profession that often operates behind the scenes. Engineers design the roads we drive on, the water systems we depend on, the bridges that connect our communities and the infrastructure that supports economic growth. Yet, many students have little understanding of what our profession does or the impact engineers have on everyday life.

“PRAIRIE … builds on decades of AI research excellence across the college, where more than three-fourths of our faculty are actively using AI in their research and nearly half have developed custom AI solutions,” he said.

In part, Pérez said the college has launched AI for All and Applied AI courses to build on AI skills across engineering disciplines.

“Along with the training and development of skills and knowledge related to our all-encompassing focus on artificial intelligence, we are also enhancing access for our students in hands-on, collaborative experiences and machinery where they can work on their classroom projects, cocurricular activities and competitions, or turn their own design or entrepreneurial ideas into reality,” he said.

Located at the downtown campus in Kiewit Hall, Pérez said the Nebraska Engineering Design Hub is the college’s newest $115 million building.

“It is a bilevel workshop for all engineering students to prototype, experiment and build their creations,” he said. “It includes the Tom and Nancy Lauerman Digital Fabrication Lab, a wood shop, a metal shop and an electronics shop.”

fill across the AEC industry.

“For us, that means licensed professional engineers, professional land surveyors, and engineers in training who are ready to move quickly into project leadership,” he said. “Water and wastewater engineering, transportation design and geomatics are particularly competitive right now.”

McIvor said the pipeline from university programs hasn’t kept pace with infrastructure demand.

“Experienced mid-career professionals have more options than ever,” he said . “Licensure requirements add another layer. You can’t shortcut the path to a professional engineer or professional land surveyor, which means firms are competing for a finite pool of qualified candidates.”

As AI and automation reshape what efficiency looks like, McIvor said his firm is looking for curious, adaptable people, not just the technically proficient.

“The fundamentals still matter enormously,” he said. “Sound engineering judgment, the ability to read a site, to understand why a system fails; those things don’t get automated.”

Licensure requirements add another layer. You can’t shortcut the path to a Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), which means firms are competing for a finite pool of qualified candidates.

AI-assisted design tools are increasingly valuable.

“We want lifelong learners who see technology as a resource, not a threat,” he said.

On the recruitment side, Lamp Rynearson has broadened where and how it looks for talent by actively reaching out to qualified candidates who are willing to make a move. The firm has also built partnerships with Avenue Scholars and the Department of Defense SkillBridge programs, which connect military service members with civilian career opportunities.

McIvor is also a product of the firm’s Be the Legacy Internship Program, which creates meaningful pathways for long-term growth.

“The workforce challenge in engineering is a long-term reality and we’re treating it that way,” he said. “That means investing in people and community well before a position ever opens up.”

For instance, its Legacy Lab program brings employee volunteers into elementary school classrooms to lead hands-on engineering experiences at an age when curiosity is at its peak.

Building early awareness

JEO Consulting Group Professional Engineer Eric Obert said workforce talent and development is at the top of the priority list for the firm and the industry collectively.

“We know many other industries are experiencing the same workforce shortage,” he said. “Because of that, high school students are presented with a variety of opportunities to pursue great careers and achieve success.”

Obert summed up the industry’s biggest obstacle with one word: awareness. He said the profession has historically been humble about its contributions which, while admirable, means that many young people are exposed to other career paths before they hear about engineering.

SHEDS FOR HOPE

“Engineering is a profession that often operates behind the scenes,” he said. “Engineers design the roads we drive on, the water systems we depend on, the bridges that connect our communities and the infrastructure that supports economic growth. Yet, many students have little understanding of what our profession does or the impact engineers have on everyday life.

“When it comes to retaining talent, the challenge shifts from awareness to engagement. Today’s professionals want meaningful work, opportunities for growth, work-life balance and a strong workplace culture.”

Engineering firms that invest heavily in leadership development, mentoring, professional growth and purpose-driven work, Obert said, are often the most successful at retaining their people.

“The challenge before us is ensuring that more students understand the opportunities available and see themselves as future engineers,” he said. “If we can continue building awareness, strengthening the educational pipeline and creating environments where professionals can thrive, I am very optimistic about the future of our industry. But it will take all of us working together to achieve that vision.”

Planning Starts on Day One

OWNERS RISK VALUE BY DELAYING EXIT PLANS

A successful business is fantastic, but the danger is the uncontrollable, like the economy, health. Those things can just pop up out of nowhere.

As people pursue the dream of owning their own business, attention is often focused on startup and developing relationships with customers. The last thing people think about is developing a succession plan. However, an exit strategy should be one of the first things on a new business owner’s checklist, say consultants.

“When a business starts, owners go from working on the business to in the business, and when they’re in it, it’s like they have a hard time lifting their heads up to really focus on anything long term, strategy-wise,” said Ross Polking of Foster Group. Owners can ill afford not to create a succession plan as part of their startup, said

— ROSS POLKING, FOSTER GROUP

Brad Burklund of Strategic Solutions. Nearly 85 percent of small businesses that go on the market aren’t sold, he said.

10-year plan

As a business grows, owners need to look to the future and plan their succession at least 10 years ahead of their potential exit, Polking said.

“I coach a lot of youth sports teams, and my number-one rule is ‘early is on time and on time is late,’” he said. “I think the same thing kind of applies here

because I think when somebody starts too late, what happens is the business doesn’t successfully or effectively separate themselves from the dependence on the owner.”

Late planning can impact a business’ valuation or the ability to transition the business becomes difficult because the business is dependent upon the founder and the person pulling all the strings, Polking said.

“The earlier you start, obviously there’s more time to identify capable successors,” he said.

Another potential problem with late planning is the perception of a forced sale or transition due to an illness or burnout, because there are economic issues, Polking said.

“During the (COVID-19) pandemic, (some) people were forced into selling or transitioning a business because of all of the uncontrollable factors at that time,” he said.

Planning circumvents those issues, Polking said.

“In the end, the earlier you start, you optimize the tax mitigation strategies, the planning opportunities and really how you care for clients and customers, because owners want to make sure their clients and customers are well-taken care of,” he said. You

Planning Starts on Day One

OWNERS RISK VALUE BY DELAYING EXIT PLANS

Unless someone has the exact same skill set and knows what’s going on in the business, the chances of success moving down the road are very small.

“If you start too late, and you’re in scramble mode, that usually falls by the wayside.”

Business value

It is also critical that business owners know the true value of their operation as part of a business succession plan, Polking said. In the end, potential buyers want to know the bottom line.

told, ‘Here’s what I’ll pay you for the business.’”

As discussions focus on creating a succession plan, some owners aren’t ready to talk about what needs to be done. Relinquishing control can be a tough obstacle to overcome, said Bob Swartzbaugh, president and chief executive officer of Swartzbaugh-Farber and Associates.

“He becomes a coach, or should become a coach, as opposed to a player,” Swartzbaugh said.

“A lot of times, business owners are like, ‘Oh, it’ll work itself out. It’ll just happen, right?’” he said. “And so they kind of don’t want to have the conversation when it’s a child, or whomever. The timing of it is just as important.”

While consultants and advisers seek to cover all the bases, there are occasionally situations that keep them up at night, especially when an owner doesn’t have a succession plan in place.

“I think of their family, because if they don’t have a plan in place, and there’s an illness, there’s a death, there’s some calamity or catastrophe that happens, their family is obviously negatively impacted,” Polking said. “The family is left with, ‘Well, now what do we do?’ Suddenly, the business isn’t worth anything because there wasn’t a succession plan in place and the business is dependent upon an owner who’s no longer there.”

Unexpected situations can also impact clients, Polking said.

“A successful business is fantastic, but the danger is the uncontrollable, like the economy, health. Those things can just pop up out of nowhere,” he said.

For Swartzbaugh, it’s personal.

“I worry about my employees, for example,” he said. “That’s my number-one concern.

You have to find somebody to take care of the ship, and that means the employees.”

Finding ‘right fit’

As transition becomes reality, it’s key to find the right fit in a successor, Swartzbaugh said.

“You have to have a culture match and that’s very, very difficult sometimes,” he said. “You could get two parties together and, luck would have it, they get along and think the same way and think similarly about the vision of the company and the culture of the company, what makes employees like to come to work, et cetera.”

As owners eye retirement or just moving on from the business, they need at least three to five years for a successful transition, Burklund said.

“That gives you a chance to make some changes in the management structure, gives you some chances to do some tax things, be able to figure out where income is coming from, get a good financial plan,” he said.

“You can figure out what’s going on and then be able to move that plan forward. I always like to say it’s kind of like Wayne Gretzky, when he’d always say, ‘I never skate to the puck, I skate to where the puck’s going to be.’”

A Hand Up

WINSLEY DURAND III, MCL CONSTRUCTION

WINSLEY DURAND III BUILT A CAREER HELPING OTHERS

In the early 1990s, Winsley Durand III was just another college grad trying to find his career footing as assistant credit manager for Associates Commercial, then the world’s largest financer of over-the-road trucks. One day management told him he was needed in the Omaha office, but to the Illinois native it might as well have been an assignment to Mars.

“I knew nothing about Omaha except for the Huskers and Warren Buffett,” he said. “I didn’t want to come, but they said, ‘You know, you can ask for a transfer after a year.’”

Considering how the rest of his story played out, such an alternate ending is nearly inconceivable for Durand. Having now lived here for three decades, nearly two decades of it working for the Greater Omaha Chamber, he’s on the short list of the biggest fans Omaha ever had.

“I got here and loved it and Omaha’s treated me well over 30 years,” he said. “It’s been my home.”

Like most careers, Durand’s took a winding path in more ways than just geography. After earning a marketing degree from Illinois State University, he took his first gigs in vehicle financing out of necessity in a job market that wasn’t looking for marketing grads. However, working with small trucking operators as they built their companies one truck at a time gave him an appreciation for the role he could play in their success.

In time, those skills would complement his degree as he promoted the city itself, beginning as director of minority economic development for the chamber in 2006. From the start, the work of selling Omaha and its advantages for business owners came naturally.

“Everything that we do in the business world is a form of marketing,” he said. “You market yourself, you market a product, you market your company, you market your city. All of those things were a part of that whole marketing training and when I combined that with how well Omaha had treated me once I got here, it was very easy to tell people, ‘Omaha’s a great place to be. It’s a great place to bring your business and your people, and here’s the reasons why.’

“It also helped that Omaha has a great story, you know, lower cost of living than the average in the United States, great amenities for city its size. It was an easy story to tell.”

Over the course of his time at the chamber, during which he’d ultimately ascend to the role of vice president of economic development, Durand learned to harness the power of relationships in moving projects forward. Again, it wasn’t a hard sell to do so.

“Omaha is a city where there’s great collaboration and I think that that has stayed the same over time,” he said. “If there is something that needs to be done, you can gather

Everything that we do in the business world is a form of marketing.

— WINSLEY DURAND III

a group of people together, they’ll put their minds together, they’ll open up their pocketbooks and things can be made to happen.

“Even all the way down to the grassroots level, the entrepreneurship network that we have here in Omaha is probably one of the more robust ecosystems for startups in the country. There’s a lot of resources, a lot of people that just really want to help and who are willing to share the mistakes that they made and the lessons learned. That is a great thing.”

That community attribute was particularly helpful as Durand worked directly with the startups and small businesses he encountered as the inaugural executive director for the chamber’s REACH Initiative.

“That happened around the same time, or a little bit after the city had done away with its DBE program, its disadvantaged business program, which was minorityand woman-focused,” he said. “They had changed over to the SEB, or the Small Emerging Business Program, and there were a lot of city projects, a lot of bond issue projects going on, and there was a desire to get small businesses engaged on those projects.

“The work that I had been doing had been capacity building and a lot of it focused on small contractors over the years, so I was tapped to help create a program to be a capacity building program for the small business or small contractor community. It required the years of experience from the insurance and bonding that I had been involved with previously and the finance route, all combined with the challenges I had seen small businesses experience over the years to create some hands-on solutions to help them get through those challenges and get to the next level.”

Durand does similar work in his current role with MCL Construction, helping small businesses prepare to increase their capacity and grow sustainably as they look to get into procurement channels, specifically in the construction industry. He said the biggest challenge in his job is developing a leadership style that leads clients to apply his coaching and guidance, even though he doesn’t have direct authority to compel them to do so.

“People have to be at the right place to accept the information or training or guidance that is being made available to them,” he said. “I can give the exact same advice to multiple entrepreneurs and some took off and grew and some of the other ones didn’t, and it’s because the owners of those companies weren’t at the spot there where they may have been open to or may not have had the capacity to take advantage of the opportunities that were opened up to them.

In a way it’s like being invited to be a mentor or to teach or provide guidance. People sometimes have to welcome you in first before they can hear what you have to offer them.

FUN FACTS:

MBJ: WHEN I SAY “BEST WEEKEND,” FOR YOU, WHAT MUST THAT INCLUDE?

DURAND: MY WIFE LORI AND I ARE EMPTY NESTERS AND SO BEING ABLE TO SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH OUR THREE ADULT CHILDREN AND JUST ENJOYING AND RELAXING AND GETTING TO SEE THAT THEY’VE BECOME WONDERFUL HUMAN BEINGS, THAT’S A GREAT TIME.

MBJ: WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER?

DURAND: I WOULD SAY THAT IT’S PROBABLY COLLABORATION, JUST BEING ABLE TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. MORE CAN GET DONE WITH FEWER RESOURCES WHEN EVERYBODY COLLABORATES. YOU GET A BETTER RESULT, A BETTER PRODUCT.

MBJ: WHAT’S A FAVORITE PLACE IN OMAHA YOU LIKE TO GO OUT TO EAT AND WHAT DO YOU ORDER?

DURAND: I’M NOT SURE IF THERE’S ONE THAT JUST REALLY STANDS OUT BUT THERE IS AN ENTREPRENEUR THAT I JUST LOVE TO DEATH. WHENEVER I’M OUT AND ABOUT IN NORTH OMAHA, I LIKE TO STOP INTO BIG MAMA’S AND I HAVE THEIR CATFISH, GREENS AND THEIR SWEET POTATO PUDDING.

MBJ: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE LEARNED IN YOUR LIFE THAT WOULD’VE BEEN GOOD TO KNOW WHEN YOU WERE 16?

DURAND: THE MORE PEOPLE YOU KNOW, THE LUCKIER YOU GET.

MBJ: WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

DURAND: I WOULD SAY MY GUILTY PLEASURE, AND I DO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT SOMETIMES, IS JUST TURNING THE BRAIN OFF. I DO A LOT OF VOLUNTEER AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES IN ADDITION TO THE JOB I DO AT WORK AND IT’S KIND OF GO, GO, GO. WHEN I DO JUST KIND OF PAUSE AND STOP, I FEEL LIKE I REALLY SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING.

MBJ: WHAT’S AN ADVANTAGE TO BEING THE AGE YOU’RE AT, PROFESSIONALLY OR OTHERWISE?

DURAND: THERE IS A CERTAIN ADVANTAGE THAT COMES WITH EXPERIENCE, KNOWING THAT EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN THE WORLD DOESN’T NECESSARILY NEED A RESPONSE. BEING ABLE TO JUST KIND OF LOOK AT IT AND SAY, “OH, OK THERE’S A PATTERN HERE. THIS FALLS INTO THIS PATTERN THAT WE’VE ALREADY RECOGNIZED,” ALLOWS YOU TO MORE QUICKLY IDENTIFY THINGS, BECAUSE OF EXPERIENCE.

Bio:

Omaha native Dan Hoppen earned a degree in journalism and marketing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since 2019, his “Restaurant Hoppen” podcast has showcased Omaha chefs, restaurateurs, bakers and coffee shop owners, interviewing them about their background, business and food. He also highlights locally owned restaurants on his social media and his website, restauranthoppen.com. For the past 18 months he has served as senior emerging content strategist for Hurrdat ONE.

You’ve held several roles in your career journey. What was fundamental to all of them in terms of what brought you there and what you were able to accomplish?

My willingness to say yes has opened doors for me I never would’ve imagined would even be there. If I have the ability or capacity to try something, I’m almost always going to say yes.

Being open-minded has helped me develop skills and unlock parts of myself that I didn’t know existed. I was very shy growing up but my willingness to try new things has given me much greater confidence and has built me up to be a podcast host, host of public events, give speeches, provide a strong social media presence and more.

What does your job entail today and what you enjoy most about your work?

My job is to create content that highlights Omaha and what makes it such a uniquely special city. As someone who’s lived in Omaha nearly my entire life and loves this

city passionately, it’s an honor to showcase the aspects that make Omaha so beautiful. And I get to be creative every day, which is a major blessing.

Hurrdat One has been, from its inception, a company that prides itself on taking unconventional approaches to its work. How does that corporate ethos fit your personality and working style?

I love that we just get to try stuff; whether it’s a different style of content or a new idea, we’re given the freedom to experiment. Not every idea or piece of content is a winner, but we’re allowed to test and make pivots based on the level of success our original idea has.

How did your previous work experiences prepare you for what you do now on a daily basis?

My previous work experiences — from interviewing famous Nebraska athletes to speaking on stage at my church — gave me the confidence to develop a public persona that lives on social media. I’m not afraid to create content, whether I’m in front of the camera or behind it, and that’s a skill set that’s necessary for this role.

What is something a mentor told you that has proven to be a valuable credo or words to live by?

It goes back to my first response: If you have the ability, always say yes. You never know the relationships you’ll create or the skill you may develop in a new opportunity. I’ve had a lot of offers or requests in my career that have intimidated me or didn’t interest me originally but ultimately made me a better person and helped to develop me into who I am now.

You state on your website “Restaurant Hoppen,” “I’m no professional food reviewer. I’m not a restaurant critic.” Yet, you’re gaining a reputation for being a food reviewer and restaurant critic. At what point did/do you consider yourself a professional? If not, what qualifications would you want to have to make that leap?

Reviewers and critics have an important place in society, but I don’t think that’s my role. In fact, I’m intentional in distancing myself from those terms. I consider myself a restaurant advocate. I’m here to help Omahans discover awesome local restaurants they didn’t know existed, not provide critical analysis of what a restaurant offers. I simply

publish photos/videos and what I liked about the experience with minor (if necessary) critiques and allow my followers to make the choice themselves if they should visit. If I have a negative restaurant experience, I’ll speak with the owner or staff, as everyone makes mistakes. But I won’t post about it online. I see it as my job to uplift restaurants that are doing well, not tear down those that aren’t.

A couple of years ago, you were on an episode of Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” the show you said was your inspiration to getting into the restaurant/food scene in Omaha. What did being on that national show give you as a content producer that you still think of each time you create content?

“ Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” is the reason I do what I do. I’ve spent countless hours watching that show. The way Guy Fieri highlights local restaurants and their stories inspired me, and it made me want to do the same. To be able to meet him was honestly an out-of-body experience; I’m still not convinced that I actually spoke with him. Every time I get negative comments online or am feeling unmotivated to create content, experiences like that remind me why this work is important and push me forward.

Outside of “Restaurant Hoppen,” you’ve also worked as a content strategist in the corporate marketing world and as an author with Concordia Publishing House. How does writing in those different lanes — corporate content, published books, food media — inform or sharpen the others? Is there a throughline in how you approach storytelling, regardless of the format?

What I’ve discovered about myself throughout my zigzagging career is that I love telling people’s stories. Whether that’s getting to know the star wide receiver on a human level in my career as a sportswriter, examining the lives of the Bible’s messy heroes as a book author, or telling the “why” behind local businesses and owners at Hurrdat ONE and the Restaurant Hoppen podcast, I want to give people a platform to showcase who they are and why they’re passionate about what they do. Every single human has a unique, fascinating story ... but most never get the chance to tell it. My goal is to help them do so.

To Mars, at Any Price

The biggest IPO in history happened Friday, June 12, and it went off without a hitch. SpaceX, priced at $135 a share, raised $75 billion and closed its first day up 19% at a valuation north of $2 trillion. A perfectly respectable debut, though honestly a little underwhelming compared to the hype. Given the frenzy in the days leading up to it, some expected the stock to double. It didn’t; and strangely, that’s the most encouraging thing about all of this noise.

The valuation itself requires some imagination. SpaceX did about $19 billion in revenue last year and has lost nearly $9 billion since the start of 2025. The S-1 makes for fascinating reading: an accumulated deficit of $41 billion, Elon Musk holding 85% of the voting power, and a business plan that ranges from satellite internet to orbital AI data centers to, yes, a city on Mars.

Let’s sit with Mars for a moment: The ambition is a self-sustaining colony of a million people, which raises practical questions like who wants to live there and what happens when a colonist needs surgery or chemotherapy on a planet where nothing grows. Maybe it’s all solvable; history suggests it’s dangerous to dismiss ambitious ideas simply because they sound improbable at first. Investors once asked similar questions about online retail, electric vehicles, cloud computing and social media.

The difference is that most of today’s megacap winners went public long before reaching trillion-dollar valuations. SpaceX is asking investors to underwrite the dream after much of that future value has already been recognized.

The S-1 does let you pick your own futuristic adventure. Want a cash-flowing story? That’s

Starlink, the closest thing here to a conventional business. Prefer hardware? Rocket launch, where SpaceX has no viable peer. Or do what much of Wall Street is doing and anchor the thesis on xAI, folded into the company earlier this year, making this as much an AI investment as a space investment.

Here’s the thing: betting against Musk has been a losing trade for two decades. There is a potential path for this company to generate hundreds of billions in revenue someday. It doesn’t require believing in every part of the story, only that a few of the biggest bets succeed. Which, frankly, makes SpaceX the perfect stock for this moment where investors

are buying compelling stories rather than performing rigorous fundamental analysis. It sits at the intersection of AI, infrastructure, communications, and space exploration; perhaps SpaceX becomes the greatest story ever told.
