Omaha Joins Bloomberg Climate Youth Fund

Omaha will join Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund, Mayor John Ewing Jr. announced, making the city one of 300 municipalities worldwide to participate in the expanded program. The fund provides $50,000 in initial grant funding plus technical assistance to support climate projects designed and led by young people ages 15 to 24. Municipalities that deploy initial funding quickly are

eligible for an additional $50,000. Mayor Ewing has launched an open call on the city’s website for youth-led climate proposals. The program, which has engaged more than 300,000 young people across five continents since its 2024 launch, supports projects ranging from green space creation to infrastructure resilience. Ewing said the grant supports a key mayoral priority. “Young people are a vital part of that plan,” he said. “We need them engaged now in this effort to build Omaha’s resilience to climate change.”

Offshore or Summer Reading

IMPACT 250 ISSUE MAKES WAVES

It’s the middle of summer, and the weather has been unseasonably hot, even for the middle of Nebraska and Iowa, where  “corn sweat” assists the high humidity levels.

Neighborhood Offshore is one service offering Omahans a way to beat the August heat without straying far from the city. This unique small business has paddleboards and kayaks available at Lake Cunningham and Flanagan Lake, and the company runs a sunset sailing tour out of the Lake Cunningham Marina, a 90-minute outing that pairs basic keelboat instruction with light bites and zero-proof refreshments. Those who prefer solid ground can stay ashore, as the company also offers horseback riding.

ASAP Containers has recently celebrated 25 years in business. This dumpster-rental business offers fixed-rate pricing, as well as reduced weekend pricing, and owner Steven Hovey said he enjoys working on residential work, unlike many of his competitors.

This issue also introduces SRK Mowing, built by Samir Kpebane before he has even finished college. Kpebane has turned a summer job into something closer to a craft, treating stripes and edges with the same care most lawn services reserve for the mowing itself. The business has grown to cover trimming, mulching and seasonal cleanup, but the pitch is still the simplest one: a tidy, well-kept yard, done right, all summer long. It is the kind of business this publication likes to catch early.

One small business in this issue that truly excites me is The Reading Room, a lounge and space to read and relax where one coffee drink is called Bronte Brew and one mocktail is Gatsby’s Glow. Although I have known about this business since before it opened, I am long overdue for a first visit to this storied haven for bibliophiles like me.

This issue also previews YP Week, a full week of programming built around engagement, opportunity, education and advocacy for the metro’s young professionals, including a day set aside entirely for community service. The effort is aimed squarely at Omaha’s future by building community among young professionals already here, keeping them here and giving newcomers a reason to choose this metro, too.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Pillen halts data center incentives

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order July 20 barring new data center developers from ImagiNE Nebraska Act tax incentives and creating a state task force to protect Nebraska’s power grid and water supply. Since 2021, data centers have received $519 million in property tax exemptions on $15 billion of personal property. Existing agreements are untouched, but future large-scale applicants must instead rely on private investment.

$181M police-fire HQ at Crossroads

Omaha unveiled designs July 20 for a $181 million joint police and fire headquarters at the Crossroads redevelopment site near 72nd and Dodge streets, replacing aging downtown facilities. Woodbury Corporation is developer of record, and the project anchors the mixed-use rebuild that has struggled to secure tenants. Mayor John Ewing Jr.’s team says the campus will consolidate operations and modernize dispatch and training.

Ewing unveils $1.7B Omaha budget

Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. on July 21 introduced a proposed $1.7 billion 2027 city budget prioritizing public safety, parks, streets and pension funding. The plan increases police staffing, funds a downtown parks investment and does not propose a property tax rate hike. City Council hearings begin in coming weeks with final adoption expected before Sept. 1.

Ewing signs $15 wage ordinance

Mayor John Ewing Jr. on July 21 signed the Omaha City Council’s $15 minimum wage ordinance passed the prior week, setting up an expected legal battle with Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers over whether local ordinances can exceed the state’s lower floor. The signing follows Lincoln’s identical move and is likely to be joined into pending state litigation over municipal wage authority.

TIF for apartment complex

Omaha City Council on July 22 approved tax increment financing for a five-story, 34-unit apartment project near 76th and Pacific streets, adding to central Omaha’s steady multifamily pipeline. The infill project replaces an underused parcel adjacent to Aksarben and reflects continued council backing for TIF-supported density along the Pacific Street corridor.

UNMC opens 305-bed residence hall

UNMC leaders cut the ribbon July 22 on UNMC Residences, the medical center’s first on-campus student housing project. The 305-bed facility is managed by Omahabased Burlington Capital and marks a milestone in UNMC’s growth strategy to keep students, residents and clinical trainees close to the medical center campus. Occupancy begins with the fall semester.

Pillen picks 28 opportunity zones

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen on July 23 nominated 28 Nebraska census tracts — including 10 in Omaha and five in Lincoln — for federal Opportunity Zone 2.0 designation. The picks stretch statewide from Scottsbluff to Omaha and open the door to investor tax deferrals on capital gains in qualifying tracts. Final designations require U.S. Treasury approval.

Union Pacific reports record Q2

Omaha-based Union Pacific reported record second-quarter 2026 results July 23: operating revenue reached $6.9 billion (up 12%), net income hit $2 billion (up 6%), and adjusted EPS of $3.41 (up 13%). Freight revenue rose 12% while operating ratio was 59.7%. UP raised full-year EPS guidance to high single-digit growth. Shares climbed 5.6% to $308.95 on the results.

Nebraska budget gap tops $1B

Nebraska’s projected two-year budget shortfall grew to more than $1 billion, Nebraska Examiner reported July 22, up from earlier estimates. Lawmakers are eyeing the state’s cash reserve to address a near-term $200 million gap even as the larger structural gap looms before the 2027 legislative session, complicating Gov. Jim Pillen’s 5% agency-cut order issued earlier this month.

Hexagon Agility lands $100M deal

Lincoln-based Hexagon Agility received a $100 million order — its largest ever — from Certarus for Mobile Pipeline Titan 450 and Titan 510 modules to supply compressed natural gas to hyperscale data centers nationwide. The contract could grow to $125 million if an option is exercised. Deliveries begin Q3 2026 and continue through 2028.

Amazon Prime Air to launch in Papillion

Amazon confirmed Prime Air drone delivery will launch this summer from its Papillion fulfillment center, serving a 7.5-mile radius across much of the Omaha metro. The FAA-compliant autonomous service delivers small packages and marks Nebraska’s entry into large-scale commercial drone logistics, competing with Wing and Walmart initiatives elsewhere. Local officials expect a range expansion to 12 miles within a year.

Metro Credit Union plans HQ

Metro Credit Union filed a building permit for a 45,000-square-foot headquarters at 17758 Evans St. on the southeast corner of 180th and Maple streets in front of the Costco Wholesale store. The three-and-a-half-acre site will consolidate operations for the credit union, which serves the Omaha metro and three Iowa counties. A construction timeline has not yet been released.

Omaha CRE vacancy remains tight

Omaha’s Q2 commercial real estate vacancy remains healthy across sectors. Office vacancy sits at 7.4%, retail at 4.7%, and industrial at 3.1%, according to Grow Omaha’s July 20 market report. Analysts cite a diverse tenant base and steady developer confidence as the region absorbs macroeconomic pressures without losing momentum, positioning the metro as a stable commercial investment market.

A weekly recap of current, relevant and breaking business news in the area

Eppley adds Newark, Fort Myers routes

Omaha’s Eppley Airfield secured two new nonstop routes: daily year-round United Airlines service to Newark (NJ) Liberty and seasonal Southwest Airlines service to Fort Myers, Florida. The Newark route expands Omaha’s east coast connectivity beyond existing New York LaGuardia service on Delta and Southwest. Bookings are already open for late 2026 and early 2027 travel windows.

VA med center funded for upgrades

Omaha VA Medical Center received Q3 fiscal 2026 funding for nonrecurring maintenance projects as part of $4.8 billion in nationwide Veterans Administration facility spending. The funds support modernization, repair and infrastructure improvements at the Omaha campus. Officials say the awards continue a multiyear investment cycle in the Nebraska-western Iowa health care system.

Field Club townhomes start

Construction has started on the first of eight buildings in the Rose at Field Club, an $11 million luxury townhome development at 40th and Pacific in midtown Omaha south of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The completed project will deliver 31 three-story rental townhomes along the Field Club Trail. Completion is planned for 2027, adding upscale rental inventory to the midtown corridor.

Nebraska wins $10M NSF STEM grant

A University of Nebraska-led partnership received a $10 million National Science Foundation grant to expand STEM education and workforce opportunities statewide. The award supports curriculum, teacher training and rural outreach across Nebraska school districts, with implementation phased over multiple years. Officials say the program addresses tech talent shortfalls in growing sectors.

Beef antitrust class actions OK’d

A U.S. federal judge on July 17 certified class actions against major beef packers — including Nebraska-tied Tyson, JBS, Cargill and National Beef — allowing direct purchasers to pursue price-fixing claims for alleged coordinated production cuts. The ruling is significant for Nebraska’s cattle and packing economy and clears the way for damages proceedings.

Green Line Cafe opens on Saddle Creek

Green Line Cafe has opened at 1540 Saddle Creek Road in the former Saddle Creek Breakfast Club building. Additional Omaha food-and-beverage openings include a new coffee house on the Westroads Mall second floor (opening in August) and Ziggies Coffee’s planned drive-thru at 193rd and Gold streets.

ASAP Containers

Above and Beyond BUILDING A BUSINESS ON SPEED AND

25 YEARS OF TRUST

Steven Hovey is no stranger to hard work, having started out driving trucks at age 18 Before he founded ASAP Containers in 2001, he owned a lawn service and then worked for a container company that inspired him to start his own container business.

“I’ve always enjoyed this work, and I enjoy it now,” he said.

Hovey attributes the success of his business largely to his tendency to always “go above and beyond” in everything he does. The result is an efficiently run business and a long list of satisfied customers.

It’s probably not surprising that an Army National Guard veteran like Hovey would lean into efficiency and integrity with his family-run business. His modus operandi has always been to do what he says he’ll do, and to do it quickly.

“It’s aggressive,” he admitted, “and it has worked out for me. People respect that.”

ASAP Containers recently celebrated 25 years in business. The business focuses on residential work, which sets it apart from other companies within the same industry. Hovey said the residential focus helps the company provide fast service, sometimes the same day, because he knows that most customers want it done quickly.

“A lot of people like doing the commercial and new construction-type stuff, but I pretty much have always focused on residential.”

The firm provides dumpster rentals in four different sizes, drop-off dumpster rentals and dumpster pick-up services. Though focused primarily on residential, ASAP does offer some commercial services. Fixed-rate pricing and reduced pricing on weekends is another hallmark and all dumpsters are inspected regularly to ensure safety and cleanliness.

Hovey is passionate about helping the community. When the area experienced a tornado event in April 2024, Hovey and his team jumped in to help with cleanup efforts for affected residents.

His motto for the future is characteristically direct and to the point: “Always look forward,” a tactic that has worked for his business for a quarter of a century. If he were to give advice to a younger version of himself about owning a business, Hovey said he’d tell him, “Always continue to grow, otherwise you kind of just stall out.” He also stressed the importance of understanding price fluctuations and not being apprehensive about raising prices when operating costs increase.

Neighborhood Offshore

Standing Up for Water Sports ROLLING ALONG WITH CONVERSATION AND COMMUNITY

When Kristen Macdissi started Neighborhood Offshore in 2013, a company that provides paddleboards, longboards, kayaks and other rentals, she was paddling against the current in decidedly landlocked Omaha, Nebraska. Thousands of miles from the nearest ocean, Macdissi decided to make her own waves.

“There wasn’t an accessible entry point into board-sports culture in Nebraska,” Macdissi said. “Surf, skate, snow; those worlds felt far away unless you already had access, gear or someone to show you the ropes. I wanted to build something that made those experiences feel local, tangible and welcoming.

“The board shop became that first doorway. It wasn’t just rentals or retail, it was conversation, community and a place where people could see themselves in something new.”

Macdissi quickly found that interest in board sports wasn’t the issue for her fellow Nebraskans. They didn’t need an ocean or a snowy peak, they just needed someone to provide gear and give them a push.

Growing business, growing aspirations

“We had people who wanted to participate. Kids were curious, families showed up but the gaps are real: equipment, transportation, cost, confidence, representation,” she said. “Over time, that doorway got bigger. What started as a shop evolved into something with more responsibility and that’s what ultimately led to Camp Outpost.”

Her board shop started to become something more,

something bigger.

“Transitioning Neighborhood Offshore into an entity under Camp Outpost Inc. wasn’t just a structural move, it was a commitment,” Macdissi said. “At this point, the board shop is part of a bigger ecosystem. Through Camp Outpost, we operate as a year-round, nonprofit outdoor outfitter serving youth, families and communities across Nebraska.”

Macdissi and her team routinely bring the shores to the plains, the mountains to the city streets.

“We work with schools, community centers, mentoring organizations, adaptive partners, correctional facilities and re-entry programs. We show up where people already are, and we bring the full experience with us: the gear, coaching and structured programming,” Macdissi said.

“The outcomes go beyond the activity. We see measurable growth in confidence, leadership and skill progression. We see participants come back as alumni, bring a friend and start to take ownership of the space.”

Watching it grow

She recalled watching with pride as her board shop became something more.

“We also structure our programs in multiweek ‘terms,’” she said. “That consistency is where growth happens. It’s where relationships are built, skills are developed and confidence sticks. It’s a blend of board shop culture and nonprofit intention.”

Macdissi said she finds the relationships are every bit as thrilling as skating downhill.

“The most valuable lesson has been learning to listen:

KRISTEN MACDISSI, OWNER

The Reading Room

A Room of Their Own

Launched last year, the Reading Room is a bookstore and cafe that’s become a welcome, safe place for people of all backgrounds. Sam Morley, owner of the business, explained that while she originally intended it to be a space for readers, it’s become more of a central community hub for people to work, study, read and simply gather.

“The Reading Room isn’t just one thing,” she said. “It’s a bar, it’s a coffee shop, it’s a bookstore, it’s a lounge and it’s an event venue. Being in a space where all these elements come together fills a lot of the desires and demands of customers and the community. Keeping this in mind, the Reading Room becomes a comfortable third space for so many people, which then contributes to the business’ success.”

Morley said when she was envisioning how the business would run, she was meticulous about the sounds, smells, furniture and overall feel of the space.

“I wanted customers to feel like they could be there for several hours without feeling like they had to leave quickly,” she said. “The staff are there to curate the experience of the customer, they’re not there to push products or services heavily. They’re there to make the customer comfortable. When the customer is comfortable and welcomed and not burdened, that then translates into a successful business for everyone.”

While current downtown construction has closed streets in and around the store and ultimately slowed foot traffic, the Reading Room is still growing its reach. With a huge commitment to supporting the community, Morley

works hard to promote the work of local authors while also sourcing other local products like tea, coffee and honey from Omaha-area vendors.

The Reading Room also donates regularly to local organizations such as the Omaha Bee Club, PLCS Foundation and the Brownell Talbot College Preparatory School Gala.

“The more local, the better,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey as an entrepreneur, Morley said she has gained valuable knowledge that she’d share with anyone just starting out in their own venture.

“You only live once,” she said. “You might as well try and do everything that you can while you can. Don’t be afraid to try new things and meet new people. If something fails, try something new.”

Over time, she’s also learned that listening to customers is the key to success.

“Yes, I have this vision for a business, and I want it to be successful for what my expectations are, but I must also listen to the customer because this is a partnership between the two of us,” she explained.

“Finding the way to open a brick-and-mortar store and having actual customers come in all the time has been a dream come true. It’s one thing to open a store, it’s another thing when customers actually arrive and keep coming. My next big goal is to see about adding more locations of The Reading Room.”

Beautifying Area Yards Before Graduation

CLIENTS’ LAWNS TREATED LIKE OWNER’S OWN

Beautifying yards is what SRK Mowing is all about. Samir Kpebane, owner and founder of the business, said his passion for building his business began early.

“I started SRK Mowing because I’ve always had the mindset of wanting to build something of my own and become financially independent at a young age,” he explained. “My introduction to lawn care started when I was about 15 years old while helping maintain one of my dad’s rental properties. What began as simply helping out quickly showed me that lawn care could be a real opportunity.

“For several years I continued doing lawn work here and there, but I didn’t officially launch my business until I was 19. Looking back, I think I hesitated because I wasn’t fully confident yet. Eventually, I realized that the best way to learn and grow was simply to start. Turning something I had been doing for years into a real business felt like the natural next step.”

After working for his father, Kpebane started picking up more clients and gained confidence to build something on his own. He organized as an LLC this year, but with roots dating to 2022, Kpebane is working on growing his reach.

“That shift from just doing the work to thinking like a business owner was a pivotal moment that shaped how I approach my company today,” he said.

Kpebane’s mission at SRK Mowing is to treat clients’ lawns as if they were his very own.

“That mindset pushes me to take pride in the quality of the work and ensure every property is maintained with care and attention to detail,” he said.

He also said his focus on building relationships and the outlook of building a long-term business is what sets him apart.

“Even though I’m still young, I focus heavily on professionalism, reliability and building strong relationships with clients,” he said. “I also aim to operate the business in a modern and organized way by using technology to manage scheduling, client relationships and service planning.

“My goal isn’t just to mow lawns, it’s to build a scalable company that can continue growing and eventually offer a full range of lawn and landscape services.”

In fact, relationships are at the very core of what has brought him — and SRK Mowing — success so far.

“In a service-based industry, people want to work with someone they trust. Many opportunities come through word of mouth and the connections you build with others. Maintaining professionalism, delivering reliable service and building genuine relationships with clients has been one of the most important factors in growing my business,” he said.

When he thinks about what’s on the horizon, Kpebane said his objective is to continue to expand his client base and secure larger properties, especially HOA communities. He’s hoping to obtain proper licensing to expand his service offerings to add weed control and fertilization with the ultimate goal being a fullservice lawn care company.

“One quote that I live by today is from Abel Morales,” he said: “‘When it feels scary to jump, that’s exactly when you jump. Otherwise, you end up staying in the same place your whole life.’”

BRANDON HAMM REFLECTS ON HIS BOARD SERVICE SPONSORED

Several years ago, I worked with a couple who had a long history of giving quietly and consistently in Omaha. After the husband passed away, the wife wanted to continue that legacy in a way that reflected both their shared values and the needs she saw around her. Together, we established a scholarship fund to support under-resourced students. To bring that vision to life, we partnered with the Omaha Community Foundation.

My work as an estate and tax attorney for local families dovetails with the Foundation’s work of supporting the community. Being involved in my clients’ charitable planning, I was intrigued by the vast work of the Omaha Community Foundation and decided to get involved more than ten years ago.

As my term as OCF’s Board Chair comes to an end, I reflect on experiences like that, and how those moments illustrated to me what a community foundation can do at its best. It serves as a connector, helping individuals turn charitable intent into meaningful, lasting impact in the community.

Over the past decade, I have come to better understand the unique role a community foundation plays. It is often described in simple terms, such as a place that manages charitable funds. While that is true, it doesn’t fully capture the breadth of the work. Our community foundation operates as a central hub, bringing together donors, nonprofits and community leaders with a shared purpose. It does so without an agenda of its own, which allows the foundation team to remain focused on the overarching community needs.

That role became especially clear during moments that required immediate action, which I have seen many of during my time with OCF. When federal relief funds were distributed following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation was asked to help

Nebraska, the Good Life

steward government resources in a way that was both fair and effective. It was not a traditional function, yet it was carried out with a level of coordination and trust that reflected years of relationship-building in our community. There were no headlines about the innovative process itself, but it was executed steadily and transparently, so local organizations received the support they needed.

The same can be said of local crises. When the Arbor Day tornadoes hit two years ago, funds were established within hours to support those affected. When families living in an apartment complex were displaced due to fire code and safety issues that were not rectified by the property owner, resources were mobilized just as quickly. These responses do not happen by accident. They are the result of a flexible team that understands the landscape, maintains strong connections across sectors and is prepared to act when the moment calls for it.

A significant part of that work is shaped by the people involved. Board service offers a unique perspective into the range of expertise required to guide a community foundation. Those working in the nonprofit sector bring a level of insight that cannot be replicated elsewhere. They understand the challenges organizations face on the ground and often have direct relationships with those doing the work. When combined with perspectives from business, philanthropy, and other areas, it creates a more complete picture for decision-making.

Looking ahead, there is reason to be optimistic about the future of philanthropy in Omaha. A generational shift is underway, with significant resources expected to flow into charitable efforts over the next two decades. If individuals and families choose to partner with the Omaha Community Foundation, their resources can be guided thoughtfully, and the potential impact on our community is substantial.

None of this happens without the leadership team and staff who carry out the dayto-day work. It is a lean organization by many measures, yet it consistently delivers meaningful results across the Omaha community. Their ability to build relationships, respond quickly and work thoughtfully with people in the community is what allows a foundation to function as more than a financial services institution. It becomes a trusted partner in shaping the future of Omaha.

Bio:

KEVIN BAITEY

A first-generation college graduate, Kevin Baitey has a Master of Architecture degree and a Bachelor of Science in design from the University of NebraskaLincoln. In 2022, he was honored with the AIA Nebraska Associates Award for exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of his career. Baitey is also actively involved in the community through the ACE Mentor Program of Omaha, Rotary Club of Omaha and the AIAS Mentorship Program through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a graduate of Leadership Omaha Class 47.

What did Leadership Omaha bring out in you?

I cannot say enough great things about Leadership Omaha. Class 47 refreshed my understanding of all the interconnected issues, strengths and opportunities for involvement throughout the Omaha metro. I came away with deep admiration for my fellow classmates and community leaders, and a strengthened resolve for service and volunteerism. Leadership Omaha is an immense benefit to leaders at any stage of their careers, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking opportunities for growth and development.

What is something a mentor told you that has proven to be valuable words to live by?

My sophomore year at UNL, I hit rock bottom financially

and faced leaving college because I couldn’t afford school. One professor, Betsy Gabb, noticed something was off and when she found out what was happening, she said,: “Take the time you need to figure things out. But whatever you do, find your way back, because you can do this.”

Without that single intervention, there’s a good chance I would never have made it to where I am. Today, I connect with students from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences, and I want young people to hear, “You can do this.” For some, that may be the first and only time they’ve heard those words from someone outside their immediate family.

What sparked your interest in architecture?

In fifth grade, I had an assignment to write a paper about a career that sounded interesting to me. My mother, who raised me as a single parent, instilled in me a sense of direction to avoid falling into the cycle that had affected much of my family. So, I saw this paper as an opportunity to seriously consider my future.

I narrowed my parameters down to two things, creativity and purpose, though I might not have understood it in those terms at the time. I looked at the environment around me and wondered how all of these buildings were put together, which led me to discover architecture. I figured I was decent enough at math and I enjoyed drawing, so it would be a great fit. I learned more about architecture throughout middle school and high school and the more I discovered, the more confident I became in my decision to pursue a profession in architecture.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The surge of creativity in the conceptual design phase is certainly a contender for the top spot. There’s something wonderful about seeing an idea take form and there’s definitely satisfaction in seeing the idea brought to life through construction.

Most of all, however, I love how well-designed spaces impact users and the community at large. There’s nothing better than seeing people thrive in the spaces I’m privileged to design. When someone’s eyes light up as they walk into a building for the first time, that’s a sign of a job well done.

What memorable project have you gotten your fingerprints on?

The St. Luke United Methodist Church renovation will

always stand out to me. This project came at an early stage in my career. Around that time, my project manager and mentor began to take notice of my performance, allowing me to take on more and more responsibility with each consecutive project.

At the time St. Luke kicked off, I found myself running client meetings, presenting design concepts and directing our consultants. Later on during the project, that very same mentor and project manager, Matt Krause, passed away and I found myself taking on even more responsibility than I anticipated. Thanks to his mentorship, I found myself more capable than I imagined to keep the project moving. I will forever be grateful to the St. Luke UMC team and the leadership at Carlson West Povondra Architects for trusting me to carry the work forward.

What’s changed most in customers’ outlook or expectations?

There has been a growing emphasis on flexibility and wellness. In the post-COVID era, work can happen almost anywhere, so many clients are incorporating hybrid spaces, informal meeting areas or outdoor workspaces into their projects. This shift also means providing technology and support spaces for remote work and video conferencing, while automated systems help create adaptable and comfortable environments.

At the same time, access to nature has become a greater priority, prompting focus on outdoor spaces, bringing natural elements indoors and maximizing natural light. As a designer, it’s exciting to see clients embrace these concepts as key elements of their vision from the outset.

Do you consider yourself a technical guy with an artistic streak, or an artist who applies his talents in the architectural realm?

At Carlson West Povondra Architects, I’m involved in every stage of the process from design and contract documents all the way through construction. I have to be both things at all times. If I had to choose I’d put myself on the artistic side, although I couldn’t imagine designing something and not spending the extra time on the technical side figuring out how it all works. Part of the fun for me is throwing out imaginative ideas and challenging myself through the details to prove the concepts are constructible and within budget.

Driverless Future is Arriving Faster than Most Investors Realize

Weekly Market Commentary

Early earnings season is off to a strong start, with the big banks providing an encouraging first look at both corporate profits and the broader economy. JPMorgan led the way, reporting approximately $58 billion in revenue compared with expectations of roughly $50 billion, a significant beat. Results across the banking industry have also pointed to resilient consumers, healthy credit conditions and continued strength in business activity. Banks sit at the center of the economy, giving them a unique view into everything from consumer spending and borrowing to corporate investment and dealmaking. So far, the message is encouraging: despite persistent concerns around interest rates, inflation and geopolitics, the underlying economy continues to perform well.

That strength is important because corporate earnings remain the fundamental engine behind stock prices over the long run. Expectations entering this earnings season called for S&P 500 earnings to grow roughly 20% from a year ago, following similarly strong growth last quarter. If the early pace of earnings beats continues, we believe the final number could ultimately come in well above that 20% expectation. While valuations are elevated in pockets of the market, rapidly expanding corporate profits continue to provide fundamental support for companies broadly. Simply put, businesses are earning more money and early results suggest they may once again be doing it at an even better pace than analysts expected.

That doesn’t mean every stock or sector will move higher together. We continue to see rotation beneath the surface as investors reassess valuations and capital moves toward areas where earnings and expectations are improving. We don’t necessarily view that as a sign of weakness. Changing market leadership can be healthy and create new opportunities beyond the stocks that have led the market in recent years.
