Governor signs budget adjustment

On April 7, Gov.Jim Pillen signed the 2026 mid-biennium budget adjustment package with no line-item vetoes.

The governor thanked the Appropriations Committee chair, Sen. Robert Clements, and the Legislature for its work in developing a fiscally conservative bipartisan budget. The final approved budget adopts 91% of the budgetary recommendations championed by Pillen. These efforts have solved the $627 million

biennial budget variance, honored the state’s commitment to providing tax relief for Nebraskans and still maintains nearly $900 million in unobligated reserves.

“We must be responsible stewards of the public’s resources, prioritizing what is necessary over what would be nice to have. We have made extraordinary progress with this year’s budget reductions. We will keep working to meet the expectations of Nebraskans -- reducing government spending, investing in our kids, and lowering property taxes,” Pillen said.

The Lesson Isn’t That Passion Conquers

Walk into City Limits in the Old Market and you might find a greeting card that reads “Fires are Red, Dumpsters are Gritty.” Drive to Westwood Plaza and you’ll find Krypton Comics, where 7,500 square feet houses vintage Spider-Man issues alongside meeting space for artists, board game enthusiasts, and anyone with blue hair or a mohawk who needs a place to belong. These aren’t typical retail operations, and that’s precisely the point.

Charity Naujokaitis bought City Limits in 2019 from George and Cindy Park, who’d run the store for roughly 40 years. She could have played it safe, maintaining inventory exactly as the Parks had left it. Instead, she trusted her instincts as a graphic artist, bringing in products based on her love of good design that still delivers a laugh. People walk in on bad days just to feel better. That’s not accidental merchandising, that’s understanding what a store can be beyond transactions.

Dean Phillips opened Krypton Comics in 1993 after deciding he was done working for corporations. Maybe it was an attitude problem, he said, or maybe it was clarity about what mattered. He started with 1,200 square feet near 76th and Pacific, got evicted when the building sold, and landed at Westwood Plaza despite rent that shocked him. Thirty-plus years later, the store hands out thousands of free comics every May on Free Comic Book Day. The line stretches for blocks.

What Phillips built isn’t just a comic book store. It’s infrastructure for community. Artists meet regularly to critique each other’s work over lunch. Card game players and board game enthusiasts gather. The store has become a filming location for local filmmakers, and the community remains grateful for Phillips’ willingness to participate in their productions. That kind of civic participation doesn’t show up on a balance sheet, but it shows up in longevity.

Both businesses operate in an era when retail faces existential pressure from online commerce and changing consumer behavior. City Limits and Krypton Comics survive not despite their specificity but because of it. Naujokaitis curates merchandise that makes people smile. Phillips created space where socially awkward people — his words — can fit in regardless of hair color or presentation. You can’t replicate that experience with two-day shipping.

Naujokaitis worried before buying City Limits whether she could bring in the right merchandise without a business background. Phillips learned inventory management the hard way, accumulating storage units around the city because comic distributors don’t accept returns. Neither had perfect preparation. Both figured it out by doing the work and trusting that resources — friends, family, instinct — would fill the gaps.

The lesson isn’t that passion conquers all obstacles or that authentic businesses always succeed. The lesson is simpler: know what you’re building and why it matters. Naujokaitis wants City Limits to pass 50 years and keep going. Phillips wants Krypton Comics to remain a place where everyone fits in. Those goals are specific enough to guide decisions and flexible enough to adapt when landlords sell buildings or rent increases shock you.

That’s how retail endures when it has every reason not to.

Sarpy Businesses Strengthen Community

PHILANTHROPY PARTNERSHIPS SUPPORT NONPROFITS AND LOCAL IMPACT

Philanthropy continues to play an important role in shaping the strength and success of communities throughout Sarpy County. Local businesses regularly invest their time, resources and expertise to support nonprofit organizations that serve residents and address important community needs.

The Omaha metropolitan area, which includes Sarpy County, is often recognized as one of the top regions nationally

connections through initiatives like its Nonprofit Collaboration group. The group brings together nonprofit leaders and chamber members to exchange ideas, share resources and identify opportunities for partnership across the community.

Through open dialogue and collaboration, these connections help organizations work more effectively together while strengthening relationships between the business and nonprofit sectors.

When businesses and nonprofits collaborate, they strengthen the entire community and create opportunities that benefit Sarpy County for generations to come .

for charitable giving per capita. This strong culture of generosity is reflected in the way local businesses consistently invest in nonprofit organizations and community initiatives.

Across the county, businesses contribute in a variety of ways: through sponsorships, charitable donations, volunteer initiatives and collaborative partnerships. These efforts help nonprofit organizations expand programs that support families, provide educational opportunities, strengthen neighborhoods and improve overall quality of life.

One of the most visible ways businesses engage with nonprofit organizations is through community events and fundraising initiatives. Attending galas, benefit events and fundraising efforts not only provides critical financial support but also creates opportunities for business leaders to better understand community needs and build relationships with nonprofit partners.

These events often serve as more than just fundraisers. They bring together business professionals, nonprofit leaders and community stakeholders in a shared space, encouraging collaboration and long-term partnership. In many cases, they become the starting point for ongoing involvement, whether through sponsorships, board service or volunteer engagement.

This type of engagement reflects a broader trend in how businesses approach philanthropy. Companies are increasingly encouraging employees to volunteer their time and talents with organizations they care about, and many now offer structured opportunities or dedicated time for community involvement.

National data shows that workplace volunteerism has increased in recent years, with many companies reporting higher employee participation. Studies also indicate that employees are more engaged when their workplace supports community involvement.

By working together, businesses and nonprofit organizations can maximize their impact and reach more people in need. These partnerships allow nonprofits to expand their programs while giving businesses opportunities to directly support the communities where their employees and customers live.

The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce helps foster these

-KAREN GIBLER

As Sarpy County continues to grow, the partnership between businesses and nonprofit organizations remains an important part of the region’s success. By supporting causes that matter to the community, local businesses are helping create a stronger, more connected Sarpy County for generations to come.

Philanthropy plays an important role in strengthening both nonprofit organizations and the businesses that support them. When companies invest in their communities, they help create an environment where organizations can grow, residents can thrive and local economies remain strong.

For many businesses, giving back has become an important part of company culture. Employees often take pride in working for organizations that actively support charitable causes, and volunteer opportunities can strengthen teamwork while helping employees feel more connected to the community where they live and work.

Nonprofit organizations benefit from these partnerships in a variety of ways. Financial contributions help sustain programs and expand services, while business leaders often bring valuable expertise in areas such as marketing, technology, finance and strategic planning. These relationships can provide nonprofits with the tools and resources needed to reach more people and operate more effectively.

Beyond direct support, collaboration between businesses and nonprofits often leads to new ideas and creative solutions to community challenges. By sharing knowledge, resources and networks, organizations can better identify needs and develop initiatives that make a lasting impact.

Across Sarpy County, the continued engagement of local businesses demonstrates a strong commitment to community success. Whether through sponsorships, volunteer efforts, mentorship or charitable giving, business leaders are helping ensure that nonprofit organizations can continue serving residents and strengthening the region.

As Sarpy County grows, these partnerships will remain an important part of building a vibrant and supportive community, one where businesses and nonprofit organizations work together to create opportunities that benefit everyone.

Offbeat Humor

MERCHANDISE RUNS THE GAMUT OF HUMOR, TASTE

Perhaps someone’s “perfect” greeting card conveys a true feeling of dislike or mediocrity Maybe it hinges on sarcasm. Those people who prefer the statement “Fires are Red, Dumpsters are Gritty” will find their greetings for others at City Limits.

Charity Naujokaitis always thought working at City Limits was the ultimate part-time job for a college student. A graphic artist by trade, Naujokaitis dreamed of owning the store.

Taking over legacy

Then, in 2019, after about 40 years of running the store, George and Cindy Park were ready to retire. Naujokaitis jumped at the opportunity to continue their legacy.

City Limits is more than a store, Naujokaitis said. The unorthodox — some may say juvenile — humor often hits the target, she said.

“When people come in, they might not necessarily buy anything, but they walk around to just get a laugh or find some sort of entertainment,” Naujokaitis said.

“I’ve heard of some people occasionally saying, ‘Hey, just having a bad day. I came in because I just needed a laugh.’”

Adding her own touch

While City Limits is known for its unique products — stationery, socks, animated books, home decor, stickers and more — Naujokaitis wanted to add her own touch to the store.

“A lot of the products I bring in are kind of based on my love for graphic design and things that are well-designed, well-made, but still fun,” she said.

While she’s expanded sections and brought in new products,

Naujokaitis said she’s stayed loyal to the original concept of City Limits.

Humor is key

“The unique nature of the products I like to bring in curates merchandise that either gives a smile or gives a laugh, and is good quality,” Naujokaitis said.

After taking over the store, Naujokaitis wondered if she could maintain the story of City Limits, but she’s learned to trust her instincts.

“Before I took over the business, I was concerned, like, ‘Hey, will I be able to bring in the right merchandise? The right thing that’s going to sell?’” Naujokaitis said. “It didn’t take me long to realize if I love it and I think it’s interesting, then it’s worth bringing into the store.”

Becoming owner of one of the Old Market’s staples isn’t taken lightly, she said. City Limits remains a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. She plans to keep it that way, Naujokaitis said.

“The goal is simple,” she said. “I need to keep it a viable business. I want to pass 50-plus years, then keep the store around for as long as I’m able to run a business.”

If she could browse the store’s selections with her younger self, Naujokaitis said she’d recommend facing challenges head-on.

“Don’t be afraid of the unknown,” she said. “Since I have a graphic design background, not a business background, I was always scared of the business side of things. How will I work through that, not having that background? Just remember that if you don’t have the answers, there’s always some resource, some friends and family, that’s out there to help you.”

Custom Gems

Turning Stones Into Gems

NICHE SHOP CELEBRATES OWNER’S ROCK FASCINATION

Tim Kautsch once came home from a trip to South Dakota with a pickup chock full of rocks .

“That bed of the truck was leaning down pretty badly,” his father, John, said, adding a chuckle.

“We used to get in trouble (for) having too many rocks in the car,” Kautsch said. “Then we got limited. My brother and I had a cardboard box that (we could) get full. That’s it.”

Hooked on gems

Kautsch’s rockhounding turned into a business. He started working at Custom Gems in 1991, right out of high school, and has owned the store for 35 years.

He and John took classes at the store, led by then-owners Ed and Erma Pharaoh.

“I had all these stones done, and Erma said, ‘You should make some jewelry out of that,’” Kautsch said. “I didn’t want to make jewelry. And she said to just try it, so I made something. I was like, ‘Oh, that was all right.’”

Certified gemologist

His career in gems and stones took off. That certification has allowed him to consult with other businesses and organize gem shows.

His knowledge of stones ranks with the best gemologists. Sales people have tried to trip him up in identifying stones they bring to the store, John Kautsch said.

“One time a guy brought in, he had, like, really high-end stuff,” Tim Kautsch said. “There were probably 20 stones in there. He’s, like, ‘If you guess all these, I’ll give it to you.’ So just by sight, I think I missed one. He was freaking out. That was fun. He got a little nervous. But we’re still friends.”

With a wall full of more than 250 types of stones, Custom Gems creates pieces of jewelry such as a diamond ring with a black onyx frame. Kautsch and his team (including many family members) use a laser welder to fabricate their products.

“Previously you couldn’t, because the heat from the torch would burn up stones,” Kautsch said.

His team also polishes stones and repairs jewelry, he said.

Customer service is key

Kautsch said he believes the customer service they provide separates Custom Gems from other stores.

That service was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic when other businesses were shutting down. While they didn’t allow customers in the store, they found alternatives to helping people.

“We were selling through the window,” he said.

That commitment helped their relationships with people, Kautsch said.

“Developing friendships and trust. That’s what keeps people coming back,” he said.

Kautsch’s advice to younger gemologists and rockhounds is to be ready for the tests that await them.

“Stay in school,” he said. “Really, be ready for the challenges. Because every day is a challenge. There’s always something new that happens. You don’t have an answer for everything that comes up, but you need to find it.”

Kautsch said he believes in an old military saying his father shared with him.

“The difficult we do right away,” he said. “The impossible just takes a little longer.”

House of J

Design for Success

The perfect room balances comfort and intention . A cohesive color palette layered with varied textures creates warmth without visual clutter. Lighting is flexible and inviting, combining natural light with lamps.

Those unsure of their decorating skills may benefit from a visit to House of J. The home decor and design store at Montclair Plaza near 132nd Street and West Center Road features beautiful products that help accent any room in the house. Owner Patti Van Buren may even offer a few suggestions to help a customer create a room worthy of a magazine cover.

Jumped at chance to buy

The one-time credit union vice president relishes the opportunity to design visually appealing interior scenery. When her neighbor, Jenny Johnson, planned to close the store, Van Buren leapt at the chance to take it over.

It seemed a natural move for her. Van Buren had been thinking of a career change, after working on a number of design projects, including opening and designing new branch offices.

“I had shopped there (since) House of J opened, so I always loved it,” Van Buren said. “I’ve always had a passion for design.”

Strong customer service

She’s relied on her staff from the beginning to help move the store along. Van Buren’s customer service experience has also benefited House of J, creating a one-of-a-kind experience that draws shoppers from around the United States.

DECOR

“I have people who drive in from everywhere,” she said. “People will fly in to see their family. They’ll make it a point to come to the store. I have people who know of us from all over. I hear it constantly, how much they just love to come in.”

Design advice

House of J’s customer focus goes beyond sales, Van Buren said. “People will come in, they’ll show me pictures of their space, and I offer them interior design at no charge,” she said. “Let’s do this shelf or that shelf, or I help them pick out artwork, and I don’t charge for that. Sometimes I might make a delivery for free.”

It’s important to Van Buren that House of J maintains the positive image it has had since Johnson opened the doors in 2004.

“I didn’t build the business from the ground up, but you can mention House of J anywhere in Omaha, and somebody has heard of the store,” Van Buren said.

She envisions improving House of J’s influence on social media, Van Buren said.

“I don’t want to do online sales,” she said. “I know that’s where things are at, but I still think that the experience you have when you come into the store, people leave with a good feeling, because it was just a fun experience to come in to shop, getting to see things in person. That’s what we’re known for.”

If she could consult with her younger self, Van Buren said she’d tell her to keep plugging away.

“You’ve got to work your business if you’re the owner,” she said. “Don’t think that you can always hire good people, because people still love meeting the person who’s behind House of J. That’s me.”

Krypton Comics

Nostalgia Superhero KRYPTON COMICS CREATES WELCOMING SPACE

Those in search of vintage comic books, such as “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Fantastic Four” or “Superman” will find Krypton Comics ranks among the best places to find unique or vintage issues of comics .

Owner Dean Phillips opened Krypton Comics in 1993.

“My grandmother babysat for some fairly well-to-do kids,” Phillips said. “Whenever they were done with their toys and their comic books, she would grab them and give them to me, so I had comics as a young kid.”

Comics set his future

His love for comics took hold. As an adult, Phillips collected them, even selling them at comic book shows.

Tired of working for corporations, Phillips ventured out on his own, turning to the one thing he knew and loved: comics.

“Maybe call it an attitude problem, or whatever you want to call it,” Phillips said.

His first store was located near 76th and Pacific Streets, with about 1,200 square feet, perfect for a store like his, Phillips said. Then came news that would lead to a bigger, better Krypton Comics.

“They’d sold it, and the new owner came in and said, ‘Good to meet you. You’re out in two months,’” he said.

He landed on his feet, finding a new spot at Westwood Plaza. He experienced sticker shock with the rent, though, Phillips said.

“The rent was cheap (on Pacific Street) and it was easy, and that really shocked me paying a much higher rent in having a larger place,” he said. “But it’s all worked out. We’ve moved a couple times, but it’s always been for the better.”

Special meeting place

Today, Krypton Comics covers 7,500 square feet on the upper level of Westwood Plaza. Besides vintage comics, the store sells collectibles, action figures and more. It’s even become a place for likeminded people to gather for activities, with meeting space.

“For the comic books and board game-type community and card game community, it’s a place where you can fit in no matter (who you are),” Phillips said. You got a mohawk? You got blue hair? Whatever is your thing, whatever you want to be called, you can fit in here, because we’re all just a little bit socially inept. It kind of blends together. It’s a place that everyone can feel welcome.”

For the artist by trade, one group, in particular, melts his heart, hosting a regular artists group.

“They can bounce ideas off each other, make fun of each other, eat a little lunch,” Phillips said. “Just kind of have a day where you interact with people, as opposed to just your project.”

Free Comic Book Day

Krypton Comics is known for handing out free comics on Free Comic Book Day, the first Saturday in May. The line outside the store that day has been blocks-long.

“We order thousands of comics, and give them all away,” Phillips said.

Phillips’ advice about owning a business would be to focus on inventory management. If he doesn’t, he may end up with storage units around the city, because merchandise can’t be returned to distributors, Phillips said.

Lindley Clothing Co.

A Suit that Lasts TAILORING SUCCESS FOR BUSINESSPEOPLE

Lindley Clothing Co has been dressing people for conducting business, whether in a home office or a corner suite, for more than 90 years

Founded in Wahoo by his grandfather, Jack Lindley, today John Lindley is the face of the Omaha legend. In 2023, Lindley sold the store to Jeff Halberstadt, who owns J.H. & Sons at One Pacific Place.

“Everything’s good,” Lindley said. “He bought it and pays me to run it.”

New owner, new role

Nothing has changed concerning the store’s operation, Lindley said.

While Jack ran the first store, opening its doors in 1935, Lindley said he believes his grandmother was the real brains behind the operation. His dad also helped with the store.

Move to Millard

Butch Lindley, John’s uncle, bought the store in 1960, moving it to Millard.

“Everyone knew Butch,” Lindley said. “He was a horse guy. I loved all that stuff.”

After his uncle was diagnosed with cancer in 1979, Lindley joined him at the business following college graduation.

“I thought I’d help him for a couple of years,” Lindley said. “Here I am, 46 years later.”

He wouldn’t change a day since, though, Lindley said. Buying the store in 1988, he knew he was committed to staying in the family business.

Taking a chance

In 1993, Lindley moved the store from Millard, where it had been for 33 years, to Linden Market near 132nd Street and West Dodge Road. He said it was a necessary risk.

“We (couldn’t) afford not to,” he said. “I doubled my rent right away, and it took me three years to double my business. I basically ran in fear of failure all my life, like a lot of small businesses, and then we made it.”

Lindley Clothing has long been a popular destination for sportswear, accounting for about 70% of sales, he said.

“Our suit and sport-coat business has really taken off,” Lindley said. “People buying them are younger, 20 and up. We do 28-35 (job) tickets a day. Younger kids are going to have to try to step it up a little bit more to try to get their jobs and keep their jobs, such as accountants and professionals.”

Two years ago, Lindley expanded, adding Well Suited by Lindley Clothing, a store dedicated to prom and wedding attire.

Looking forward

Lindley is eyeing his own next step.

“I’m 67 years old, and after selling, it makes you wonder what’s next,” he said.

Looking back, he said the best advice he can give aspiring business owners is to be available for customers.

“Retail is retail, and retail takes a lot of time,” Lindley said. “It doesn’t take as many hours as what you think, but it’s the type of hours; it’s the six o’clock at night versus four. It’s being open on Sundays, when people want to come in, especially with the wedding side, we’ve got to be here on Sundays. I’m not a fan of Sundays, but it’s important to be here when the people want to be here.”

Orchard AI

Knowledge Taking Root

As a former educator and longtime nonprofit leader, Albert Varas has always been open to new innovations As AI tools emerged, he explored how they could make tasks more efficient, began sharing discoveries with colleagues and eventually formed Orchard AI to guide nonprofits in using AI to their benefit.

“The genesis was when I had the responsibility of creating an RFP, and what would have taken me a few days — if not a week — ended up taking me 20 minutes. That solidified my belief in AI’s tremendous potential to help nonprofits speed up operations and save money in the process,” Varas said. “Having experienced the value firsthand, coupled with my general interest in supporting the nonprofit sector, made me want to make this available to people.”

Varas, CEO of Latino Center of the Midlands, planted the first seeds of Orchard AI a few years ago by informally showing other nonprofit leaders how he used AI,

introducing those who feared the tools to their potential.

“I would ask them, ‘All right, what’s your pressing issue of the day? What are you trying to solve?’” he said. “Then, I typically would turn my computer around and be like, ‘OK, let me show you some things that I think could help you.’”

A suggestion emerged, repeatedly: “Why don’t you make this a business?”

“After hearing that enough times, you have to pay attention,” Varas said. “I’ve always been interested in having a business, and I bring an entrepreneurial mindset to the work I do at nonprofits. So this was a natural fit: something I can do on the side and support the sector I work in.”

Orchard AI has evolved to offer live training for nonprofit staff, board members and donors; personalized workshops on grant writing, strategic planning, fundraising and communications; custom GPT development; and workbooks, surveys and follow-up support.

“One of my proudest achievements in 2025 was launching a UNO (University of Nebraska Omaha) online learning class on building custom AI agents,” Varas said. He’s currently booked out months ahead of time.

To accommodate growth, Varas has a partner, Jack Round, serving as CFO, and recently brought in Chief Communications Officer Erin Van Zee, APR.

“Wanting to scale, we are working on creating an online video-on-demand learning series ... the intention is to reach more people and make learning more accessible and easier for nonprofits. Everybody can’t take half or a full day to attend training, but they should be able to sit at their computer and experience a similar learning opportunity at the time most practical for them,” Varas said. “It’s also what allows us to expand our reach, because our intention is to make this a national resource so that people outside of the Midwest can take advantage of this.”

“I think it’s pretty exciting, a great way to transfer the information that we have,” Round said. “As we do that, and as AI continues to evolve, we’ll continue to learn and add additional functionality to the platform.”

Over the past 15 months, as international equities outperformed U.S. and the dollar weakened against world currencies, there was growing chatter that America might be losing its grip as the world’s reserve currency. That conversation was understandable. The dollar index fell almost 10% in 2025 and the U.S. share of disclosed global foreignexchange reserves has drifted lower over time.

But context matters: even after that decline, the dollar still accounted for about 56.9% of allocated global reserves in 2025 versus roughly 20.3% for the euro and about 1.9% for the Chinese renminbi (Yuan).1 The dollar is by far the most important reserve currency, accounting for more than half of global reserves compared to China at less than 2%. In other words, there may be more discussion of diversification but there is still no true substitute for the scale, liquidity and trust embedded in the U.S. financial system.

That matters because reserve-currency status is not just a prestige title, it is a realworld advantage that tends to reveal itself when the world gets uncomfortable. That is exactly what we have seen since the war with Iran began in late February. While international markets had been leading earlier in the year, the pattern reversed as oil spiked and geopolitical stress intensified. Since the conflict began, the S&P 500 has fallen about 7%, but Europe’s STOXX 600 has dropped 10%, and Japan’s Nikkei more than 12%.

At the same time, the dollar has risen about 1.5% against a basket of major currencies, with renewed safe-haven demand for dollars as the war intensified.2 When push comes to shove historically, the global system still runs toward the deepest pool in the room.

The bigger investment point is that beneath the war-driven spike in oil and the understandable anxiety around inflation, the underlying U.S. economy was entering this episode from a position of relative strength. Experts estimated that major tech companies are on pace to spend roughly $630 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026 alone, a scale of spending that increasingly spills over into the physical economy through equipment, power, construction and industrial demand.

So while the war in Iran is clearly a wrench in the gears, it does not erase the bigger picture: when the world is tested, the dollar still sits at the center of the system and underneath the current uncertainty, the U.S. economy still appears healthier and more resilient than many of its peers.
