He was inspired by his love of gardening to start a business of his own focused on agri-tainment.” With the support of wife, Jan, an Omaha Public Schools psychologist, Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard was born. “There is infinite potential and each of us second-generation owners are pursuing our own passions as we develop the business,” Fong said. “I love food. So, I’m dedicated to making the food at Vala’s a huge part of the overall guest experience, something people look forward to.” Fellow foodie, sister Kelsey, is developing the Vala’s hard cider business, while middle sister, Kyla, and her husband are thriving in entertainment and attractions.“We’veall taken on aspects of the business that we enjoy growing,” Fong said.As a close family, Fong said they have a strong foundation to build upon and get along well. But that is not to say they agree on everything. “One of the challenges of running a family business is to separate our family relationships from our business relationships,” she emphasized. “And, also, to not talk about business constantly, like at Christmas dinner and EasterFongbrunch.”characterized 2022 as the “largest reinvestment year” Vala’s has ever had as delayed and previously planned projects converge. After five years of planning, the team is opening up a new apple- and cider-themed area of the farm, adding two new rides and a BBQ restaurant, Ethan’s Applewood Smokehouse, which is a callout to Fong’s son. Its centerpiece will be the expansive Cider Mill, where Fong said guests can watch as cider is pressed. “We’re serving hard cider, sweet cider, and artisan, apple-themed treats,” she noted.Vala’s hired a videographer to document this journey, which can be viewed on “OwningYouTube.andgrowing this business together, it’s an adventure,” Fong remarked. “I often remind myself to just enjoy the journey.” All this, because Fong’s parents took a chance 38 years ago. “They weren’t successful instantly,” she said. “There were tough years to get through and lots of learning to do … little-by-little, my parents grew the business to where it is today. Dad is considered a leader in the industry and Vala’s is one of the largest agri-tainment destinations in the country.” Families supporting families Since 1912, Roeder Mortuaries has supported families from throughout the Omaha area as they navigate the emotional journey of loss. “We have been owned by the Roeder family for four generations,” said Brian K. “Running a family business is very much like running a family,” Roeder stated. “There may be good times and bad times. But, at the end of the day, it’s still a part of you and your family. The success or failure is up to how much you put into it.”Through Roeder’s 20-plus years in the business, he has had the good fortune of three previous generations to learn from. This, Roeder indicated, has provided a wealth of knowledge to overcome challenges presented by the “bad times.” “Also, as in a family, when things get hard there are always people who have your back,” he added. “I am also very fortunate that I not only have a great family behind me but also a great team of people who work with me.” Business leaders like Roeder know the necessities of running a family business, as well as the importance of finding a balance.“Launching a family business can consume most of your time,” he said. “Trying to create a work/life balance can be extremely tough, but also necessary.” Don’t be afraid to rely on others. “It is almost impossible to do everything yourself,” he said. “In fact, it can create burnout. Hire good people, rely on family and friends for support and don’t forget to take care of yourself.” Roeder emphasized how there will be long days. But there will also be days to spend with family outside of business. “Make sure you make being in the moment with your family a priority,” he said. “You have to know how to unplug from work in order to recharge your batteries.”Donotput off scheduling mental health days, vacations, or even just a day off.

“All Makes is fortunate to represent four generations of the same family over the last 104 years,” said EVP/CFO Amee Zetzman. Its roots trace back to Russian immigrant Harry Ferer. He founded All Makes Typewriter Co. in 1918 a few blocks from its present-day Omaha showroom. Reportedly, products included the “Ediphone,” invented by none other than Thomas Edison. In fact, the “Wizard of Menlo Park” may have been friends with Ferer, if family folklore bears out. Today, Ferer’s granddaughter, Zetzman, is joined in leadership by her brother, President/CEO Jeff Kavich. In 2005, they stepped into the shoes of their father, Larry Kavich, who had joined his father, Lazier Kavich, in the business in 1965. Zetzman described “boundless” opportunities and challenges. “In All Makes, we strive to create a culture where we embrace our team as a trusted part of our family,” she said. “In doing so, this can generate challenges as well. We celebrate our wins and struggle over the losses, but we try to always be there for everyone.”

To struggles, All Makes leadership didn’t have to look far into its history – to volatility presented by a historic health crisis and myriad lingering effects.

“Try not to discuss business outside of work,” she said. “Or, if you do, make it fun for the family. “My dad used to say, ‘This was a situation that happened today. How would you have handled it?’ So, we’d give him ourShesolutions.”described it as a “fun part of the day.”

A community foundation can be described in various ways, but its essential function is to serve a particular community through collective impact.

“A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity that is dedicated to improving the lives of residents in a specific geographical area. A community foundation receives charitable gifts; manages charitable assets of individuals, families and businesses through a variety of charitable funds; and awards charitable grants to nonprofit organizations to assist them in fulfilling their missions,” said Executive Director Diane Knicky of Midlands Community Foundation (MCF).

From pooling individual and corporate donor contributions that fund grants for area projects and charitable organizations to supporting research and nonprofit capacity building, local community foundations make a difference in the towns, cities and counties they serve.

“A community foundation gathers together like-minded philanthropic individuals from all walks of life and all socioeconomic groups with common goals of helping communities thrive, helping them be strong, supporting the nonprofits that are doing the most compelling and important work in the communities, and also responding to both immediate and long-term needs in a collective way,” said Donna Dostal, president and CEO of Community Foundation for Western Iowa (CFWI). “It’s really a partnership between the folks that want to do the most good; the community as a whole; and the nonprofits, city/county government organizations and the faith-based organizations who are doing the important work to lift up the community.”Inorderto serve the community best, the organization needs to have a strong understanding of its needs.

To solve these community problems, the right people need to be behind the mission.

“A community foundation plays a key role in identifying and solving critical community problems and serves as a resource for its community.”

Kate Cutler, who serves on the CFWI board, said a board of directors serves an important purpose for any community foundation.

Making a difference In addition to leveraging individual donations, area community foundations have strong relationships with local businesses and organizations who want to make a difference not only through financial support, but also through volunteerism and board service.

“MCF also collaborates with local businesses and serves as a resource for corporate giving by identifying and ensuring that giving aligns with the most critical challenges and needs of the community,” Knicky said. An engaged and dynamic board ensures that community foundations are strong and effective, Dostal said, and that level of service means individual advocacy, fundraising support and even event committee participation.

Providing the Midwest with the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of fresh seafood in a landlocked state, Greg Lindberg has been bringing seafood and a family atmosphere to Omaha since 1970.

From Coast to Heartland A LOCAL MAINSTAY: ABSOLUTELY FRESH SEAFOOD MARKET GREG LINDBERG, OWNER, ABSOLUTELY FRESH SEAFOOD MARKET SMALL business ABSOLUTELY FRESH SEAFOOD MARKET

Weathering the Pandemic

“Many people are still somewhat afraid of seafood in general, especially in the Midwest,” Lindberg said. “In our fish market, we try to simplify things, and let them know that cooking seafood is just as easy as cooking a hamburger. And at Shucks, we encourage them to try something different, but understand that many people want to stay in their comfort zone.”Buying good quality raw fish is similar to buying good quality vegetables, according to Lindberg.

The Beginning  Everyone starts somewhere. For Lindberg his start in the business meant driving between Omaha and New Orleans, selling shrimp from the back of a refrigerated truck. “I’d drive to Louisiana and back every two weeks. It’s a terrible way to make a living,” he said.

In addition to the market, Lindberg owns restaurant and catering business Bailey’s Breakfast & Lunch, as well as three Shucks Fish House and Oyster Bar locations.

The three brands were forced to weather the COVID-19 storm with doors closed for a time before gradually reopening. “We got lucky,” Lindberg said. “People come [to Absolutely Fresh] to grab something and move on. It’s not a fancy steakhouse where it takes twoLindberghours.” said COVID-19 was a shock to them as it was to most people.“Wedidn’t know if we were going to make it, or what the world of restaurants would look like post COVID-19,” he said. “I’m happy to report that business is booming. Sales are up considerably over 2019.” Despite being completely open now, it continues to feel the impact of the pandemic.

For seven years he made that trip before starting the Absolutely Fresh Seafood Market and selling to restaurants. More than 200 restaurants around Omaha purchase seafood and fish from Lindberg’s company.

“If it looks bright and fresh, and smells like the ocean, it’s probably a winner,” he said.

Customers are Key   With restrictions relaxing, friends and family gathering to dine together has become more frequent. “We do have regulars,” he said. “There are a lot of first names known.”

“We used the exact cargo containers from the airlines,” he said. “On Northwest Airlines I got a call that one of the boxes with 200 pounds of shrimp and 100 pounds of ice spilled out of the container.”

WEBSITE:

“We have been very reluctant to raise prices,” Lindberg said. “We try to not price gouge because we have to stay in business.”

Like many restaurants in business, supply chain issues are causing the team to rethink its menu.

The shrimp had to be shoveled off of the tarmac and discarded.

The most popular items on the menu are shrimp and salmon. Absolutely Fresh also sells other unique items, such as alligator, soft shell crab, and candied salmon. Lindberg said one of the popular items in the restaurant is a po boy sandwich.

The familiarity with customers can be seen on a visit to Shucks where Lindberg could name many of the customers and converse with them about their lives. Part of that relationship includes community involvement, and for the past 14 years Shucks has been holding a monthly fundraiser for different organizations.“Onewaywe try to help is with our First Tuesday Fundraisers. We give 15% of sales to local charities on the first Tuesday of each month,” Lindberg said. For continued success, Lindberg believes it’s smart to plan far ahead instead of living only for the month or quarter. “Another Shucks would be nice, but we are patient,” he said. “If we see a perfect location, with reasonable rent, you never know.” NE

The fish sold in the market as well as the restaurants is shipped from many places, including Louisiana, Texas and the Gulf Coast. In some cases, shipping the freshest products can also be a huge risk. Take for example a recent shipment of shrimp.

“The hard thing is taking things away from the menu,” he said. “I hear about it especially from those who drive far to get their favorite.” Lindberg said he’s most involved with the presentation of the dishes. “How do you make a restaurant different?” he asked. “I love to eat and cook, but not in the restaurant. Presentation is where I get involved.”

“I’m happy to partner with anyone that is willing to help me make the change that this community is really seeking and has needed for decades,” they said. Through their work with Omaha ForUs, Denkovich hopes to see fewer LGBTQ+ individuals leave Nebraska, improving the workforce and moving the needle in a positive direction regarding inclusivity.

JOHNCARL DENKOVICH, DIRECTOR OF OMAHA FORUS AT TEMPLE ISRAEL. BY ANNA BLUMENTHAL BY DEBRA S. KAPLAN

“I refuse to let something fail that is this important,” Denkovich said. “It’s the biggest project I’ve ever undertaken and the scariest project I’ve ever undertaken, but I don’t think anything has ever been as Denkovichimportant.”describes their undergraduate years as setting the stage for future activism.

From Private to Public Sector

After being bullied during middle and high school, they were excited to begin a new chapter at college. However, once starting college, they were unable to escape the same kind of bullying. Denkovich came home after just one“Mysemester.mother said ‘look if you’re miserable, you just need to decide what’s best for you. Do you need to come home? Or are you going to be the change that you’re looking for,’” they said. “And my mother used the analogy of being the stone that’s cast into the pond and creates ripples from the point of origin to the shore. And she was like, ‘you can either be the stone or the shore.’” This conversation served as an epiphany for Denkovich and led them to become more active in their college community, joining many clubs and activities. After talking to college leadership about bias on campus, a team was created to combat bias, which Denkovich co-chaired.

Denkovich originally started out working in specialty fashion retail. Although Denkovich enjoyed working in the private sector, they felt like something was missing. “I felt successful, I enjoyed it, but it always felt like something was missing,” they said. “And even though I was doing some charitable work, in tandem, I was spending most of my paid time off and most of my days off doing community service and community giving events or work or meetings. And so, it really started to lead to a lot of burnout.”

Denkovich said that to see bigger changes, individual philanthropists need to partner with smaller organizations that don’t have access to the same resources as larger ones.

Equitable Space  JOHNCARL

Despite success in specialty fashion retail and the nonprofit sector, JohnCarl Denkovich wanted to address a need in the Greater Omaha community. Leaving a secure position in the nonprofit sector, Denkovich, who uses they/them pronouns, started a nonprofit focused on the LGBTQ+Omahacommunity.ForUs,aspace for LGBTQ+ individuals and families across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, publicly launched in June 2022.

OPENS LGBTQ+ CENTER 40 under 40 JOHNCARL DENKOVICH PRESENTING

Another key focus of Omaha ForUs is incorporating existing LGBTQ+ nonprofits and bringing them under the same roof so that individuals could access these resources more easily.

“Omaha ForUs really delivers the human services side,” they said. “If you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, to bring in some old-school psychology stuff, people really can’t do any of this other stuff if they don’t have shelter, food, water, community connection and some of these other aspects.”Through two localized needs assessments, Omaha ForUs found that one of the most dominant needs among the LGBTQ+ community was mental health resources. Therefore, the organization is in the process of launching a behavioral health program called Best Life, an LGBTQ+ focused and led program that uses a family support model.

Creating Space

Omaha ForUs intends to create a space where the LGBTQ+ community can gather without fear of violence, bias, or discrimination. The overall mission is to build an intentional community and create an equitable space serving Nebraskans through a human services approach.

Denkovich decided to take 10 months of leave and look for a job in the nonprofit sector. It was from there that they started working with Heartland Family Service. After that, they moved to Holland Children’s Institute, where they were director of communications & program development until August this year.

Partnerships

“Family rejection is one of the leading causes of suicide among LGBTQ+ people, especially youth, and the family support model is the only evidencebased therapeutic framework in existence that serves to reduce family rejecting behaviors,” they said.

SEPTEMBER 13: LEVERAGING INDIVIDUAL FEMALE TALENT (L.I.F.T.)

EXCHANGE Bringing together executive leaders for meaningful con versations. OCTOBER 07: LEVERAGING INDIVIDUAL FEMALE TALENT (L.I.F.T.)

The Business Ethics Alliance has been leading conversations around ethics for 14 years. They have brought together people of influence within the business community in an effort to build leaders, and facilitate conversations aimed at keeping ethics front of mind. And while that same focus remains, there are changes happening inside of the Business Ethics Alliance. They have moved from being founder-led to hiring Michael Robinson as their first Executive Director, and welcomed Casey Putney as Vice President of Leadership Development.Alongtheway, they are also expanding the conversation around ethics.

“Ethical leadership is the foundation of the organizational cultures we all work within,” Putney said. “As leaders it is imperative that we understand we’re all looking for the same things from our experience at work. We want to be valued, respected, appreciated, and heard.”

He added, “We are on a mission to help leaders create cultures that people want to be a part of. In doing so, we believe that we’ll not only create efficiencies and improvements, but create spaces where people are inspired to reach their potential. We are on a mission, to help leaders create cultures that send people home happy, and healthy, more energized to reach their potential as mothers, fathers, husbands, wives or any other role they may fill at home.” And it is not just large, for-profit companies that they’re focused on. In 2022, the Business Ethics Alliance dedicated attention to helping nonprofit organizations find solutions to the challenges facing day-to-day operations. Through a grant from the Weitz Family Foundation, the Alliance created The Non-Profit Ethics Exchange. Understanding that nonprofits are often outpriced for high quality leadership development solutions, the Alliance created a six (6) session program, inviting nonprofit leaders to the campus of Creighton University to tackle issues such as Ethical Governing Boards, Post-Pandemic Team Communication, Hiring with Diversity in Mind, and more. And it’s all offered free of charge to participants.

The future is bright for the Business Ethics Alliance. Their desire to help leaders create cultures that everyone deserves, coupled with their dedication to serving the community is what makes the Omaha metro business community so unique. “We live in a special place, at a unique time” Putney said. “We have an opportunity to create something truly special. We have an opportunity to impact the lives of others, while creating a blueprint of ethical success for other cities to follow.”

OCTOBER 13: ETHICSPACE: CREATING A CULTURE OF TRUST

“Communities succeed or fail in large part based on the work of the nonprofit organizations serving important missions related to our neighbors and neighborhoods,” Robinson said. “It’s a privilege, and our honor, to serve those that have for so long, served our communities.”

Traditionally, the conversation around business ethics has focused on the varying philosophical approaches to the subject or the more technical aspects of compliance and legal adherence to regulations or public expectations. Attend a Business Ethics Alliance event today however, and you’ll participate in conversations related to organizational culture and interpersonal relationships.
