OMAHA BUSINESS HALL OF FAME: GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER ANNOUNCES 2025 INDUCTEES

WELLNESS: WALKS/RUNS AROUND THE MIDLANDS

Brownie Bar Bakery

Community favorite

“We had gone out to dinner one night and we were looking for dessert and Michael mentioned, ‘Oh, you know what sounds really good is a brownie,’” said Jim Friedman. “There aren’t places that really feature brownies. You can find cupcake shops, cookie shops and cake shops’ donuts, but no one ever features brownies.”

That night started the ball rolling and the couple believed if they felt that way about brownies then others must, too, Friedman said. They decided to bake brownies from scratch and sell them at local farmers markets.

“When we did well, we found out that we had a lot of interest in brownies,” Mitilier said. “People really do like brownies.”

The floodgates opened. While selling their wares at farmers markets, people asked if the duo would cater corporate events, which led the pair to start their own brick-and-mortar business. Opening near 13th and Leavenworth Streets, Brownie Bar Bakery featured a variety of brownies. They sold about 15,000 brownies in 2024, Mitilier said, and grew to employ four part-timers.

A few months after opening in fall 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the bakery to shut down. Ineligible for federal grants because they were a new business, Friedman and Mitilier shifted gears and began offering online orders, which they delivered curbside.

HIGHLIGHTS of the week

COMPANY HAS MULTI-STATE GIVEBACK INITIATIVE

To commemorate 50 years in business, Omaha-based Thrasher Foundation Repair mobilized its entire workforce — 575 employees across five states — for a coordinated day of service July 7, known as Thrasher Gives Back Day. The effort provided $250,000 in repair services. In Omaha, the company partnered with Abide Omaha and Good News Church, two organizations with deep roots in community transformation. The Abide project centered on one of the nonprofit’s Lighthouse Homes in north Omaha. Thrasher employees completed structural repairs and yard work across the entire block.

A second crew supported Good News Church where Thrasher repaired the Joseph House, a transitional housing space.

SARPY COUNTY EMPOWER BREAKFAST

Arthur Fratelli, as a young man, once saw magician Ricky Jay perform and was so mesmerized by his shuffling he wanted to learn how to perform a Faro shuffle, in which one shuffles a deck of cards with one hand. He practiced and practiced and yet he never mastered the technique until he turned his cards and his thinking, upside down.

Fratelli was the featured speaker at the July 15 Sarpy County emPower Breakfast, a recent addition to the lineup of emPower Breakfasts. These events are fast-paced networking socials with ample time for attendees to learn about each other and their businesses.

TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Streetcar construction advances

The City of Omaha’s streetcar project is moving forward and construction is well underway.

The Omaha World-Herald reported July 16 that businesses along Farnam Street in Midtown, where construction is happening, are seeing fewer customers. The City of Omaha Public Works Department and other streetcar partners are hosting monthly virtual construction update meetings to discuss construction and answer questions. The update will cover the two-month construction lookahead, including M.U.D. gas relocations, west utilities package, east utilities package, I-480 bridge construction and vehicle maintenance facility. Registration for the virtual update is required each month. The next meeting will be held Aug. 6; interested parties can register by Aug. 5 at 4 p.m. at omahastreetcar.org.

Manufacturer of the Year nominations open

The Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Nebraska Manufacturing Alliance are accepting nominations for the 2025 Nebraska Manufacturer of the Year award. Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 15.

Following the nomination period, a panel of manufacturing and business leaders from across the state will select the 2025 honoree. The winner will be announced during Manufacturing Month at the Nebraska Chamber’s 2025 Manufacturing Summit on Oct. 6 in La Vista.

“The Nebraska Manufacturer of the Year award celebrates a manufacturer whose innovation, efficiency and craftsmanship betters not only its own community but the entire Nebraska economy,” said Nebraska Chamber President Todd Bingham. “We’re excited to highlight the role homegrown manufacturers play in building a stronger, more competitive Nebraska.”

Prime Day event drove over $24 billion

According to Tech Crunch, Amazon’s Prime Day, which reportedly leads to an overall boost to U.S. e-commerce thanks to competitive sales, saw a significant increase in retail traffic driven by generative AI products, including chatbots and browsers. According to a post-Prime Day analysis by Adobe Analytics, GenAI traffic to U.S. retail sites increased 3,300% year over year, more than the firm had originally forecast.

Adobe’s e-commerce division provided an analysis of the U.S. retail landscape encompassing over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail websites, including 100 million SKUs across 18 product categories. During Amazon Prime Day (July 8-11), U.S. retailers saw $24.1 billion in online spend, representing 30.3% year over year growth, or the equivalent of two Black Fridays. Black Friday 2024 saw $10.8 billion in online spend, which was then a new benchmark for the holiday shopping event.

Omaha VA project in five-year plan

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has added the Omaha VA hospital project to its Five Year Development Plan. U.S. Rep. Deb Fischer said she was glad to see the project on the list, as it would “help spur the construction of the much-needed facility.” The project was previously on the Strategic Capital Investment Planning Process Project list.

Central Nebraska airport breaks records

Central Nebraska Regional Airport reported a total of 6,489 enplanements in June, making it the largest June on record for the facility. ADM announces investment in Lincoln facility

ADM, a global leader in food and agriculture, announced via press release that it is making a multimillion-dollar investment in its Lincoln soybean processing facility.

The investment will enable the installation of a second vertical seed conditioner, a cuttingedge piece of equipment that will significantly enhance the facility’s operational efficiency. This addition will help ensure soybeans are optimally prepared before processing, improving output quality and reducing resource loss.

The project supports the local economy by engaging skilled tradespeople and contractors in the Lincoln area. By boosting processing capacity and product consistency in Lincoln, ADM also strengthens its connection with local farmers. The project is targeted to be completed in mid-2026.

A weekly recap of current, relevant and breaking business news in the greater Omaha area

Midwest farmers under strain

Midwest agriculture workers, especially those with row crops, are facing challenges due to global conflicts and trade wars. The region’s economy is suffering, with Nebraska and Iowa seeing GDP drop around 6% — the largest decline in the nation.

Nationwide, farm bankruptcies rose sharply. The first quarter saw 259 filings, more than any full year since 2021. The major contributors are soaring supply costs and declining prices for corn, soybeans and wheat.

Beef prices, however, are up, with ground beef hitting a record high of $6.12 per pound in June and sirloin steak also hitting a high of $12.92 per pound. Experts point to low inventory as many cattle farmers reduced the size of their herds to deal with rising operating costs in recent years. Current U.S. cattle inventory is the smallest it’s been since 1951

Gen X emerges as influential consumers

NielsenIQ, in collaboration with World Data Lab, recently issued a comprehensive generational spending report focused on Generation X. The report, titled “The X Factor: How Generation X is Quietly Driving Trillions in Consumer Spending,” reveals that those consumers born between 1965 and 1980 are the most influential and overlooked cohort of the next decade. In the next five years, Gen X is projected to increase spending across three key categories:

• Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages (+$507 billion)

• Beauty (+$80B)

• Beverage Alcohol (+$42B)

The report also confirmed that Gen X is comprised of tech-savvy decision-makers who embrace omnichannel shopping and influence purchases across generations due to being both parents, often of teenagers and caregivers to aging parents.

Iowa company collaborates with third party administrators

Principal Financial Group, a leader in pooled retirement plan offerings, has announced the successful transition of administrative responsibilities for Principal EASE, the firm’s largest pooled employer plan by client count, to FuturePlan. This move enables Principal, headquartered in Des Moines, to better align its record keeping and investment capabilities with the fiduciary and administrative expertise of FuturePlan.

Company recognizes API excellence

Omaha-based The Strawhecker Group, a global leader in payments analytics and consulting, is honoring standout companies for API excellence and innovation through its annual API Best of Breed Report. Powered by TSG’s Global Experience Monitoring platform, the assessment provides a lens into the developer mindset, both novice and experienced, on how APIs are perceived externally. Adyen and Worldpay were recognized in multiple categories, while JPMorgan Chase-Commerce Platform was recognized in the secured payments category.

Union Pacific board votes to increase dividends

Union Pacific Corp. (NYSE: UNP) announced its board of directors has voted to increase the quarterly dividend on the company’s common shares by 3%, to $1.38 per share. The dividend is payable Sept. 30 to shareholders of record Aug. 29, 2025. Union Pacific has paid dividends on its common stock for 126 consecutive years.

Greater Omaha Chamber POWER Awards

The Greater Omaha Chamber stated in a July 17 release a new partnership with the Human Resources Association of the Midlands (HRAM) to transition HRAM’s long-standing IDEAL Awards to the POWER Awards.

“At the Greater Omaha Chamber, we know that building and retaining top talent the right way is essential to our future,” said Heath Mello, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “We are honored that HRAM has entrusted us with this next chapter in celebrating progress, recognizing leadership and advancing our community’s culture across the region.”

The IDEAL Awards have played a central role in recognizing Omaha-area organizations making meaningful progress in creating inclusive workplace cultures. The collaboration with the chamber seeks to elevate these principles and integrate into a broader business framework designed to support long-term workforce excellence.

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER ANNOUNCES 2025 INDUCTEES COVER story

The Greater Omaha Chamber is proud to announce the 2025 inductees into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame, honoring a distinguished group of leaders whose exceptional achievements have shaped Omaha’s business landscape and enriched the community. This year’s honorees represent the highest caliber of entrepreneurial leadership, civic dedication and transformative impact.

Roger A. Dixon

Roger Dixon is president and CEO of the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA), which manages the operations of CHI Health Center Omaha and Charles Schwab Field Omaha. He holds the same titles for MECA TriPark Complex, LLC, which operates The RiverFront in downtown Omaha.

Dixon joined MECA in 2000 with the goal of building Omaha’s premier arena and convention center. In his over two decades with MECA, MECA’s facilities regularly host top concerts and coveted sporting events, such as the Men’s College World Series, volleyball and basketball NCAA championships and four consecutive Olympic team trials for USA Swimming. Under Dixon’s leadership, MECA was also charged with overseeing the construction and activation of The RiverFront. Comprised of three public parks — Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America and Lewis and Clark Landing — The RiverFront hosts dozens of events each month and welcomes millions of people annually. The latest project Dixon is overseeing at MECA is the 90,000-square-foot expansion of the CHI Health Center’s convention center, aimed at allowing Omaha to compete for larger conventions.

Dixon has been in the industry for nearly 50 years. Before coming to Omaha, he served in management positions in cities including St. Louis, Philadelphia, Miami and Louisville, Kentucky. Dixon was also an executive with SMG, which manages several major facilities throughout the country.

Dixon is a 1976 graduate of Southern Illinois University.

Todd & Mary Heistand

High school sweethearts Todd and Mary Heistand were born and raised in the close-knit town of Woodbine, Iowa. After graduation, Todd pursued college at Iowa State University and Mary at Des Moines Area Community College, but soon returned home to help operate Mary’s family farm due to her father’s declining health. When the farm crisis of the early 1980s hit, Todd shifted paths to Omaha, launching a full-time career in real estate with a broker’s license and construction — an industry he’d worked in since the seventh grade.

While Todd built his career, Mary dedicated herself to raising their four children — Carrie, Mindy, Matt and Kassey.

In 1988, Todd partnered with his sister, Tammy Barrett, to co-found NuStyle

Development, originally focused on rehabilitating condemned homes. By 1994, the company had expanded into multifamily and historical apartment development, completing its first affordable housing project in Omaha. Barrett stepped away in 2003 to raise her own family and Mary stepped into an active role at NuStyle, guiding the design, aesthetics and amenities of its properties while Todd led development and construction.

Over three decades, Todd and Mary have played a transformative role in reshaping Omaha’s downtown landscape. Their work brings character and charm to once-forgotten buildings, breathing new life into dilapidated and run-down structures.

Beyond development, the couple established the Heistand Family Foundation, dedicated to uplifting families and children affected by poverty. Their commitment to community runs deep and they remain proud residents of Woodbine, Iowa.

When they’re not on a job site, Todd and Mary enjoy traveling — Costa Rica being a favorite destination — boating during their annual family vacation to Table Rock Lake and riding their Harley through the countryside. Most of all, they cherish time with their 16 grandchildren, ranging in age from those starting kindergarten to college. Their growing family keeps their hearts full and their lives joyfully busy.

Chris J. Murphy

Chris J. Murphy is executive chairman of First Westroads Bank, one of the most successful locally owned banks, which has served the community since 1967. Chris and his wife, Betsy, purchased the bank in 1990.

Under Murphy’s leadership, the bank has received the coveted highest rating from Bauer Financial for the past 17 consecutive years and its excellence rating for 32 consecutive years. Bauer Financial recognized First Westroads Bank for excelling in capital adequacy, profitability, asset quality and much more.

The Murphy family believes strongly in giving back to the community that has long supported their business and values.

Murphy currently serves on the Creighton University board of directors and on the University of Notre Dame’s Graduate Studies & Research Advisory Council. He has also served in leadership roles on the boards and executive committees of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Mid-America Council, Children’s Hospital and its foundation, The Knights of Ak-SarBen and Nebraska Bankers Association, among others.

Several recognitions include the chamber’s Volunteer of the Year, Scouting America’s Walter Scott, Jr. Citizen of the Year and the Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights honorary chairman.

Murphy is a graduate of Creighton Prep, Drake University and the Colorado Graduate School of Banking. His son, Daniel, is part of the bank’s senior leadership and board of directors.

With the bank’s 50-year anniversary, Chris and Betsy created the Murphy Vision Fund from which was made the lead investment in Omaha’s Startup Collaborative. Several of those investments are making significant small business transformations.

Since 2013, the couple have also sponsored the Murphy Cup, a joint marketing strategy

competition between Creighton and Drake University in Iowa. The event brings together top marketing students from both schools to collaborate on real-world client challenges in a weekend-long competition that emphasizes both teamwork and innovation.

Murphy’s dedication to family, community, education and entrepreneurship reflects his belief that success is best shared — and that strong communities are built through service and vision.

Bruce Simon

Bruce Simon was a fifth-generation family owner of Omaha Steaks where he served as president and chief executive officer. Simon’s career with Omaha Steaks dates back to his childhood, when he accompanied his father to the plant and helped assemble boxes to earn extra spending money. He began his full-time Omaha Steaks employment in 1981, upon graduation from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Simon’s first full-time position after graduation was as assistant plant manager and from there he went on to hold numerous other positions throughout company, ultimately being named president and chief executive officer in 1994. He held this role until the time of his passing in 2021. Under Simon’s direction, the company experienced tremendous growth and the Omaha Steaks brand became synonymous with the finest quality beef and award-winning customer service.

Simon lived the philosophy of “leading by example.” His decisive leadership and genuine philanthropic commitments were evident in everything he did. Simon was recognized as a strong supporter of the arts and health and human service organizations both locally and nationally.

Over the years, Simon was actively involved on the boards of numerous philanthropic organizations including the Omaha Performing Arts Society, Omaha Symphony, Joslyn Art Museum and Boys and Girls Clubs.

On a professional level, Simon was a past member and chairman of the executive board of the Nebraska Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization. He also served on the board of the CEO Organization and was a long-time member of the American Meat Institute and the North American Meat Association. At the time of his passing, Simon sat on the Friends of Florence (Italy) board where he served as treasurer. He was passionate about Italian Renaissance art and its preservation.

Simon’s family includes wife Stacy, two daughters and one granddaughter.

Todd Simon

Todd Simon is a fifth-generation owner of the Omaha Steaks group of companies, currently serving as chairman of the board after almost four decades in various roles, including vicepresident of sales and marketing, chief marketing officer and, most recently, chief executive officer. Simon joined Omaha Steaks 39 years ago after graduating from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He was responsible for developing and implementing Omaha Steaks’ brand strategy and many award-winning marketing programs, as well as the employee development efforts that make Omaha Steaks one of the finest customer service organizations in the nation.

Simon believes that supporting the community is a critical personal and corporate endeavor. He has had the honor to serve on the Douglas County Visitor Promotion Council since June 2019 and today is chair of the committee.

Over the years, Simon continued the family’s legacy of philanthropy and dedication to the community by serving on the boards of directors for various arts, civic and human services organizations. Currently, Simon serves as a trustee of the Omaha Community Foundation, president of the board of directors of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, a director of the Mid-American Arts Alliance and a trustee of United States Artists.

He was the recipient of the Humanities Nebraska Sower Award and was named Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Nebraska Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He and his wife, Betiana, were named Humanitarians of the Year by Inclusive Communities. The couple have two children.

The Omaha Business Hall of Fame was initiated in 1993 as part of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s centennial celebration and has since become a hallmark event, celebrating business excellence and legacy. The 2025 honorees will be formally inducted at a gala event on Aug. 20 at Holland Performing Arts Center

The evening will include an hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour, the induction ceremony and a dessert reception. Proceeds from the event support the Greater Omaha Chamber Foundation and its efforts to develop the next generation of Omaha young professionals. Honoree achievements will also be commemorated in a permanent Business Hall of Fame exhibit at The Durham Museum.

“We are honored to recognize these outstanding business leaders whose vision, dedication and service have had a profound influence on Omaha,” said Heath Mello, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “Each of these honorees exemplify what it means to have pride in your community and commit yourself to make a difference. This is a special achievement and we are proud to enshrine this class of inductees in the exclusive club of the Omaha Business Hall of Fame.”

Hustle Entrepreneurship Conference EVENT ELEVATES OMAHA’S

ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM

Building on the momentum of its successful inaugural year, the Hustle Entrepreneurship Conference is returning to Creighton University’s Heider College of Business Oct. 9 and 10 with a renewed focus on innovation, growth and community. The two-day event aims to connect more than 400 local and regional entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders for learning, collaboration and inspiration.

Headlining this year’s event is Dr. Benjamin Hardy, an organizational psychologist and author of several bestsellers including “10X Is Easier Than 2X.” Hardy will debut insights from his forthcoming book “The Science of Scaling,” offering a keynote on day one of the conference and an in-depth, hands-on workshop on day two.

Conference co-founders Curt Drew and Eric Gautschi launched Hustle to address a growing need for high-quality entrepreneurial development opportunities in Omaha.

“We wanted to create something different — something inspiring, energetic and practical,” Drew said. “Hustle is about accelerating progress and growth for business leaders in Nebraska and across the Midwest.”

“We like to play with the format, try new things and deliver an experience that’s tailored to entrepreneurs,“ Gautschi said. “We’re people who don’t like to sit still.”

Attendees will experience a live band onstage, a real time art battle, QiGong breathwork, speed networking, hands-on workshops and discussions with successful entrepreneurs across a wide range of industries.

“We have tremendous talent and ingenuity here in Nebraska and a work ethic as good as anyone’s,” Drew said. “This is an exciting time to be an entrepreneur.”

In addition to Creighton, Hustle’s sponsors and partners include Google, the Omaha and Lincoln chambers of commerce, Dundee Venture Capital, Open Range, Catalyst and Entrepreneurs Organization (EO).

“This conference is about learning and growing, making connections and building our entrepreneurial community here in Nebraska,” Gautschi said. “It takes a community effort to make that happen.”

Sponsorship and registration are now open at hustleconference.com. Early registration discounts are available through August.

MIDLANDS LEADERS q&a

NICOLE ASKINS, SUNFALL CONSULTING

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

NICOLE ASKINS

Bio:

A native of Omaha, Nicole N. Askins graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in business administration and an emphasis on management. A veteran of the financial services industry for more than 25 years, Askins’ work as a diversity, equity and inclusion program officer gave her the role that impacted others for the better.

Now a consultant, Askins partners with organizations in all aspects of organizational and human culture change and is a speaker on all aspects of the work. In August, she will be recognized as Inclusive Communities’ Howard and Gloria Kaslow Volunteer of the Year.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your work?

The biggest challenge today is our current administration and the full-on attack on DEI work. We are 20 years or less away from whites being a minority in the U.S. and they already are globally. I wonder how the concern for the equity and inclusion work will change then? (DEI) work benefits everyone and organizations can have increased profitability when these programs and efforts are in place.

Another challenge is getting allies engaged and getting other minority groups to work together. It’s easy for people to say, “That’s not MY issue.” When we use our voices and influence for all people who have been “othered,” I know we are an unstoppable force for change.

What led you to your particular field?

The fact I am a queer woman really drove me to work in the humanity space. My own experiences and those that I have witnessed or been told really lit the fire I have today for this work. Early in my career I found a passion that suited my skillset in the role of a project/program manager and as soon as I saw the impact that can be made when a group of diverse individuals come together to accomplish a common goal, I was hooked.

After hitting a big wall of burnout, I had to really dissect what was causing it and what changes I needed to make. For me, that internal work led to quitting my “big” corporate diversity, equity and inclusion job and moving into the consulting space. That change allowed me be more present in my life and in the lives of my loved ones, while allowing me to use my passion to make a difference in the world.

What is something a mentor told you that has been essential?

I once had a mentor tell me to never be afraid to take a lateral or lower grade job; it’s all about the journey, growing and expanding your working community. This really resonated with me and it has led to so many wonderful things. It is when we are willing to take a step in a new direction to grow that the journeys begin. You will sometimes fail but if you fail fast and learn from it that is career growth gold to me.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I get to meet and work with the most amazing, diverse people who share my passion. Secondly, I would have to say it’s the constant learning. Every day I gain a new bit of
