Good Friday is a religious celebration for Christians all over the world & it is celebrated on a Friday falling just before Easter Sunday. This year in April 2023,’ the day will be a following on April 7, 2023’ & is not only an observance but also a statutory holiday in all provinces & territories of Canada, except Quebec, where the day is a partial celebration. The holy day marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death. The theme of celebrating Good Friday is to practice forgiveness & the day is followed all over the Christian world, i.e. wherever there are followers of Jesus Christ, as a religious holiday. It is celebrated in England as well as it is celebrated in Canada, & many traditions of Good Friday are being taken & adapted as celebrations from Canada.

Other countries that celebrate Good Friday & are Christian-dominated countries include the USA, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Scotland & almost all parts of Europe, including the United Kingdom. It is celebrated in all parts of North America, most parts of South

America, parts of Asia, i.e. Christian-dominated countries & parts of Africa, only the Christian world. Australia & New Zealand also celebrate the occasion of Good Friday as part of the countries from Oceania. Thus, most parts of the world follow Good Friday as Christianity is the most followed religion of the world, followed by Islam. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring (after March 21), which can occur as early as March 22 and as late as April 25.

Both Good Friday & Easter Sunday celebrates the sacrifice of Jesus for the religion Christianity.

HOW IS GOOD FRIDAY AN OBSERVANCE IN CANADA?

Good Friday falls this year on April 7, 2023’ & will be observed in Canada as a public holiday in all its Provinces & territories except Quebec. In this French-speaking province, it is partially celebrated. It is a silent day of mourning & quiet prayers amongst the Christians. Some Catholics observe a partial fast on Good Friday & do not eat any meat. Thus, most precisely, there is strict abstinence from meat on a Good Friday.
