EDITOR'S LETTER

Dear Readers, February is here with the 86th edition of MBE Business Magazine

With January in our rear view mirror, we say goodbye to a very reasonable month weather wise, excluding last week's first major snowfall of the year. In the GTA, temperatures tended to be above freezing and more days than not, we saw the green of our grass instead of the white of the snow.

As we turn the calendar to February, unofficially the last month of winter before our thoughts turn to spring and warmer temperatures come March/April.

February is the shortest month of the year with 28 days. Every four years, a leap day is added to the end of February to adjust for the fact that the calendar is 365 days long but the Earth’s revolution around the sun actually takes 365 days and 6 hours.

Three of the most influential days of the month are Feb. 2nd, Feb. 14th and the third Monday of the month known as Family Day.

Feb. 2nd is the day that either Wiarton Willy (Canada) or Punxsutawney Phil (U.S.), otherwise known as Ground Hogs, come out from their burrow. Folklore will tell you that if the Groundhog comes out of his burrow and sees his shadow, it signifies six more weeks of wintry weather. If he comes out and does not see his shadow, it signifies the early arrival of spring like weather.

February 14th is Valentine’s Day. A day to show that someone special in your life how much you care about them. Be it flowers, gifts, dinner or even a card, these are some of the ways of showing how much you care and how much that person means to you.

Family Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February in most Canadian provinces. It is a provincial statutory holiday in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan. The third Monday of February is observed as Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, in Nova Scotia, it’s called Nova Scotia Heritage Day, and in Prince Edward Island it is observed as Islander Day. In general, the third Monday in February has also been celebrated as Heritage Day across Canada but it’s not listed as a statutory holiday in the Canadian Labour Code. In Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Nunavut the third Monday in February is a regular working day.
