THE MISSION

The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation is a community driven fundraising organization, which supplements state funding for programs that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and promote innovation and academic excellence in the public schools of Manhattan Beach.

THE NEED

California once ranked fifth in the nation for per-pupil funding when local property taxes were the major contributor to school funding. High property values meant more funds for public schools. That changed dramatically after Proposition 13 passed in 1978, which severely restricted property tax increases, and greatly reduced public school funding. Today, California—despite being the fourth-largest economy in the world— consistently ranks near the bottom in per-pupil funding.

Our local challenge is even greater. Even with high property values, less than 23% of our property taxes fund local education which now depends heavily on fluctuating state tax revenue. The State’s Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), adopted in 2013, was designed to increase equity by distributing more resources to districts with higher populations of high-needs students. LCFF leaves Manhattan Beach Unified School District (MBUSD) near the bottom of statewide funding—MBUSD receives $5,000 less per student than the average district in California. Support from MBEF helps bridge this gap, enhancing educational opportunities for our students.

Our exceptional schools in Manhattan Beach are not the result of funding from the state, but rather the product of a committed community that invests in public education. Every donation to MBEF directly impacts learning experiences in our classrooms, offering students an enriched education that builds confidence, curiosity, and critical-thinking skills to support their future success.

MBEF GRANTS TO SCHOOLS

MBEF grants fund the people and programs that bring learning to life in our schools and reflect the evolving needs of our students and community. Each year, donations to MBEF provide countless sources of discovery to enrich the lives of our students today and empower them for success tomorrow.

The funds raised in a given fiscal year determines the amount of funding that MBEF is able to grant to our schools in the year that follows. Our fundraising efforts in 2024-2025 resulted in $7 million to support a wide range of specific educator positions and programs in the 2025-2026 school year.

Class Size Reduction SMALLER CLASSES, BIGGER IMPACT

Few educational practices have a more profound impact on student learning than smaller class sizes. Both parents and teachers consistently emphasize the importance of Class Size Reduction (CSR) as a key factor in a successful educational experience. There is no directive or funding from the state to keep class sizes at a particular level above 3rd grade. This makes MBEF a critical partner in reducing student-to-teacher ratios in core instruction and critical grade levels to ensure our students have optimal learning conditions.

Elementary School Teachers

It is natural for class sizes to increase in 4th and 5th grades as students develop greater independence, stronger foundational skills, and the ability to engage in more complex group work. MBEF donations fund SIX additional classroom teachers to ensure that 4th and 5th grade class sizes do not exceed an average of 28 students per class districtwide.

Middle School Teachers

MBEF funds 28 additional sections in core instructional courses—English, Humanities, Math, Science, Social Science—to dramatically reduce class size for all students. Without MBEF, all core classes at MBMS would have approximately FIVE more students per class.

High School Teachers

Directed funding from MBEF supports 55 additional sections in core instruction—English, Math, Science, Social Science, and World Language—to dramatically reduce class size across the campus. This significant funding directed towards class size reduction at Mira Costa High School decreases the average class size by NINE students.

Zero Period

MBEF funds additional sections to accommodate high school students who want to maximize their schedule to benefit from the array of additional elective course options and activities. More than 25% of MCHS students take advantage of the additional period offered before the traditional school day to expand their course load.

Counseling & Support CARING FOR THE WHOLE STUDENT

A robust school counseling program provides critical social-emotional and academic support, fosters a sense of connection on campus, and sets students on a path for postsecondary success. The average student-to-counselor ratio in California schools is exceptionally high at 527:1. Research shows that smaller student-to-counselor ratios lead to increases in standardized test performance, attendance, GPA, and graduation rates.

Middle School Counselors

MBEF funds THREE additional School Counselors, bringing the student-to-counselor ratio to 300:1. MBMS School Counselors play a vital role in helping students develop essential skills in communication, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy as they navigate adolescence, increased academic expectations, and shifting peer dynamics.

High School Counselors

MBEF funds FOUR additional School Counselors to support MCHS students as they progress through high school. With a student-to-counselor ratio of 312:1, Mira Costa School Counselors can provide timely, individualized support, build stronger relationships with students and families, and create a safer, more inclusive environment that promotes both personal well-being and academic success.

College & Career Center Counselors

PREPARING FOR NEXT STEPS

The MCHS College & Career Center (CCC) helps students plan for the future with confidence. With support from MBEF, THREE expert college admissions counselors provide personalized guidance on college admissions, career exploration, and life after graduation.

The CCC Counselors host approximately 120 college visits a year, assist with college application essays, and provide one-on-one support. Families benefit from workshops, resources, and dedicated expertise every step of the way.

Physical Education

HEALTHY BODIES, STRONGER MINDS

MBEF funds FOUR expert PE teachers at the elementary level to ensure students receive 100 minutes per week of high-quality physical education. These classes promote movement, coordination, teamwork, and lifelong wellness habits—all of which support success in and out of the classroom.

Literacy & Writing FOSTERING LIFELONG READERS

Strong literacy skills are foundational to student success. In addition to classroom instruction, our students have access to a dedicated campus library and staff to support reading proficiency, comprehension, and research skills while cultivating a love of reading with books that engage and challenge them. MBEF funds SIX Library Resource Specialists to support school libraries districtwide.

STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A CHANGING WORLD

STEAM education develops the skills students need to thrive in a modern, global society—creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, persistence, and problem solving. MBEF funding supports engaging, hands-on programs that bring STEAM learning to life at every grade level.

MakerSpace Specialists

MBEF funds FIVE trained MakerSpace Specialists at our elementary schools to guide students through the creative design process. Students learn to think like engineers and inventors using everyday tools and materials.

Science Lab Teachers

MBEF supports THREE credentialed science teachers who bring science to life for all elementary students with dynamic experiments and challenges that connect the classroom curriculum with hands-on activities to make complex concepts understandable.

STEAM Pathway Electives

MBEF connects early STEAM learning in elementary school with diverse and in-depth elective options in middle and high school, helping students explore their interests and build essential skills for the future.

MBMS – 6th grade Introductory STEAM Wheel, 7th and 8th grade STEAM Wheel, Fab Lab, and Advanced STEAM electives

MCHS – Astrophysics, Biotechnology, Coding, Data Science and AI, Engineering, Marine Science, Robotics, and many more

At Mira Costa, MBEF funds a dedicated Science Lab Assistant to provide critical support for our advanced lab science teachers by prepping materials and ensuring lab safety.

STEAM Program Support

Directed funding from Chevron supports districtwide STEAM programs, materials, and technology.

VAPA: Visual & Performing Arts

INSPIRING CONFIDENT, CREATIVE THINKERS

Arts education is more than an elective—it is an essential part of a well-rounded academic experience. MBEF funding ensures that students have access to awardwinning programs in music, drama, film, and visual arts that encourage active learning and a deeper appreciation of the arts.

Music Education Teachers

The music program begins in elementary school with vocal, wind, and string instruments. MBEF funds SIX certificated music instructors and assistants who foster a love of music that continues into the secondary level, when students can specialize in the instrument of their choice and participate in a variety of electives and ensembles.

Visual and Performing Arts Pathway Electives

The enhanced elective program in middle and high school offers students a wide range of courses to promote self-expression, cultural appreciation, and confidence. Students can explore and refine their talents in a variety of courses.

All sources are critical to MBEF’s efforts to supplement state funding—the collective investment in education has an impressive impact on student learning through grants to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District for specific educator positions and programs.

THE ANNUAL APPEAL Funding Possibilities For All Students

The Annual Appeal accounts for the most significant portion of MBEF’s total funding directed towards educator positions and programs in our schools. The participation of every family in the Annual Appeal is essential to raise the $5 million needed to sustain the high-quality education we expect. Each family is asked to consider a donation of $2,500 per student, and if that is not possible, to give at a level within their means. Every contribution—no matter the size—makes a difference. Participating in the Annual Appeal is how our community invests in the opportunities that ensure bright futures for our students.

THE ENDOWMENT

Shaping A Strong Tomorrow Starts Today

The MBEF Endowment provides a permanent, stable source of funding for our schools, now and for generations to come. Established in 1986 with just $10,000, the Endowment has grown to over $25 million and now contributes more than $1 million annually to our schools—more than 15% of MBEF’s total grant to MBUSD. Modeled after university endowments, this growing fund ensures a self-sustaining investment in our students and programs year after year. It protects the quality of public education from economic uncertainty and shifting state priorities, allowing MBEF to plan for the future, protect critical programs, and keep our schools strong for the next generation of learners.

MBEF proudly honors the families and organizations who have contributed $100,000 or more in their lifetime to MBEF and the Endowment. These visionary supporters share a deep commitment to educational excellence and a belief in the power of investing in our students.

Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk

The 16th Annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk brought thousands of families and friends together on October 20, 2024, to walk in support of local public schools and children with special needs. Under the leadership of event founder and Skechers President Michael Greenberg, the Walk has raised more than $27 million since its inception. In 2024, over $3.4 million was donated to neighboring school districts, with $278,000 directed to MBEF. We are deeply grateful to Skechers and the Friendship Foundation for their continued commitment to strengthening education for every child in the South Bay.

TEDx

The 14th Annual TEDxManhattanBeach, held on November 2, 2024, drew more than 1,000 curious and engaged members of the South Bay community and beyond to be inspired by dynamic speakers and groundbreaking ideas. The event showcased thought leaders who are true CHANGEMAKERS—people who push boundaries, challenge the status quo, and spark change in ways we never imagined. Visionaries in fields ranging from beauty and AI to sustainability, mental health, and business shared how they are shaping the future. Among them were two inspiring Mira Costa High School students who joined a lineup of bold innovators offering fresh perspectives and forward-thinking solutions.

Rock the ASK

On March 15, 2025, MBEF hosted the second annual Rock the ASK celebration, a high-energy, heartfelt donor appreciation event for the generous supporters who power our mission by meeting the ASK of $2,500 per student.

Hosted by our longtime community partner Kinecta, guests were treated to a lively outdoor concert by local fan-favorite Wayward Sons, along with delicious bites and refreshing beverages courtesy of our generous partners. It was a celebration to remember—full of music, connection, and appreciation for an invested community that helps make exceptional education possible every day.

MB Legacy Open Golf Tournament

The inaugural MB Legacy Open golf tournament teed off on March 31, 2025 at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, setting a new tradition for MBEF supporters. With 120 recreational golfers hitting the course, the event delivered a full day of camaraderie, competition, and community, all in support of public education. Most importantly, the tournament raised over $50,000 for the MBEF Endowment, helping to ensure sustainable support for our schools for generations to come.

The Exer Urgent Care Grand View Gator Run

The annual event is a wonderful community tradition that has brought together serious runners, joyful joggers, laid-back walkers, and kids of all ages for over two decades.

This year’s event on May 4, 2025 was no different—the smiles stretched for miles. The Manhattan Wine Auction

Known for being one of Southern California’s most prestigious fundraising events, the 31st annual Wine Auction raised nearly $1.4 million for our public schools.

More than 2,250 guests came together to enjoy an unforgettable evening, sampling offerings from over 40 South Bay restaurants and tastings from over 80 wineries, distilleries, and breweries from across the state. We are deeply grateful for our community’s continued investment in public education and for helping to make this beloved event an extraordinary celebration.

2025 LEGACY AWARD

Melanie and Richard Lundquist

The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Legacy Award celebrates individuals who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to leadership, philanthropy, and the MBEF mission of excellence in public education. This year MBEF recognized Melanie and Richard Lundquist as the recipients of the 2025 MBEF Legacy Award. Richard, as President of Continental Development Corporation, was instrumental in securing the largest single donation in MBEF’s history—a $1 million gift to the MBEF Endowment in 2012. This transformative contribution, along with Continental Development’s two-decade-long partnership elevates both the foundation and the standard for corporate philanthropy in our community. Melanie serves as Vice Chair of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and sits on several community-focused nonprofit boards. Together, the Lundquists are nationally recognized for their “big bet” philanthropy and unwavering commitment to transformational change. We honor their early and ongoing support of MBEF and their enduring legacy that continues to shape the future of public education in Manhattan Beach.

Paddle Raise for Building Connections on Campus and in the Classroom

This year’s Paddle Raise centered on restoring vital educator positions for the 2025–2026 school year. More teachers mean smaller class sizes and deeper student connections—both in the classroom and across campuses. With limited state funding, it’s our community’s generosity that preserves the learning environment we all believe in. Thanks to your support, we raised an additional $300,000 for the Annual Appeal—helping to bring educators back where they belong and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

BENEFITTING THE MANHATTAN BEACH EDUCATION FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT

MBEF’s strong financial health, accountability, and transparency has earned the highest honors from both Charity Navigator and Candid—independent organizations that evaluate nonprofits for strong governance and integrity. Each year, MBEF’s Audit Committee oversees a comprehensive audit conducted by independent finance experts, confirming that the organization’s financial statements are fair and accurate in all material respects.

To maximize resources, the results of MBEF’s fundraising efforts in one year fund the grants of the following year—meaning that the funding raised from the 2024-25 Annual Appeal will fund the programs in 2025-2026. MBEF will grant over $7 Million to our schools in 2025-26 because of our community’s generosity in 2024-25.
