to regenerate Maidstone East

Following Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council’s joint acquisition of Royal Mail’s former Sorting Office, the Councils are bringing forward ambitious plans for the comprehensive redevelopment of Maidstone East station, including the adjacent commuter car park, Cantium House and their newly acquired land.

This seven acre, multi-million pound regeneration project is key to transforming this gateway site into the County Town. The emerging preferred approach is for a landmark mixed-use development including retail space, around 350 homes, and an improved interchange between buses and trains.

In the short-term the impending demolition of the derelict Vic pub this year, which hides the space for a new landscaped station forecourt with new seating, lighting and public art. iconic glass and steel extension and café overlooking County Hall will be built. This major new gateway project is jointly funded by the National Station Improvement Programme and South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

Savills, an international real estate advisor, has been chosen to assist Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough Council in producing these plans to revitalise the area. The Councils have jointly agreed a brief for the development, and Savills is in the process of creating detailed plans to ensure that the redevelopment scheme is as attractive as possible to private sector partners, and is welcomed and supported by residents and local businesses.

In the meantime the site has a number of temporary uses and occupiers. Shoppers, the new 250-space Sandling Road car park. Demelza Hospice Care for Children, the charity which provides specialist care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and support to their families in East Sussex, Kent and South East London, is operating its main shopping outlet and distribution centre from the site.

In addition, the refurbishment of the former additional commercial space that will be available to rent on very competitive terms. A major boost to the town is also expected next year when the new Thameslink Services commence.
