Southend 2050 and Planning for the Future
Southend 2050 is the borough’s ambition for the future. It was developed following extensive conversations with those that live, work, visit, do business and study in Southend-on-Sea.
These conversations asked people what they thought Southend-on-Sea should be like in 2050 and what steps are needed now, and in the coming years, to help achieve this. The ambition is grounded in the values of Southenders. It is bold and challenging and will need all elements of our community to work together to make it a reality.
Our focus is around the five themes: • Pride and Joy • Safe and Well • Active and Involved • Opportunity and Prosperity • Connected and Smart

Southend Local Plan
Southend is currently reviewing its Local Plan. Once approved it will be the key document through which Southend-on-Sea Borough Council sets out its vision and planning policies to guide the future development of the area, with input from local residents, businesses and partners at every stage of the plan-making process. Importantly, the Local Plan will address the borough’s needs for new housing, the creation of new employment, recovery of the local economy, along with the provision of new community facilities and infrastructure, commensurate with any growth being planned for. The Plan will also set out new policies to encourage more sustainable travel in and around the Borough, to safeguard the environment, heritage and community assets, enable our successful adaptation to climate change and help secure high quality accessible design. The new Local Plan will also be key in providing certainty for communities, businesses and investors on future development proposals, and a framework for guiding decisions on individual planning applications.
