AFM deals reliant on trusted headline talent BY JEREMY KAY

Universal punches for Chinese Zodiac BY LIZ SHACKLETON

Jackie & JJ International has sold Jackie Chan’s action adventure Chinese Zodiac to Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) for a slew of territories including North America, UK and eastern Europe. UPIE has also acquired the film for Australasia, Africa, France, Portugal, Italy and Spain. The deal was negotiated by Ramy Choi on behalf of Jackie & JJ and Jasper van Hecke on behalf of UPIE. Chan directed and stars in the film, which was released in China in December 2012 and has so far earned more than $180m worldwide. Filmed on location across five continents and seven countries, Chinese Zodiac follows a treasurehunter (Chan) searching the world for ancient relics. Chan broke Guinness World Records’ figures for the most stunts performed by a living actor and the most credits in one movie while making the film. Chan’s next project, Police Story 2013, will be released in December. Ding Sheng is directing the film, which stars Chan, Liu Ye and actress Jing Tian.

The comings and goings of familiar faces dominated the agenda as the market bid farewell to a beloved friend. If the imminent closure of Focus Features International came as little surprise, the confirmation on the first day by parent company Universal still packed a punch. Alison Thompson and her team have spent the market attending to outstanding business with partners while Sierra/Affinity, a potential sales agent of choice for the Focus slate going forward, took over Somnia and Oculus. Elsewhere an over-reliance on famous faces caused problems.

Sales agents bemoaned the challenge of finding packages with the tiny pool of headline talent acceptable to buyers, at the expense of more affordable newcomers. Johnny Depp has lost none of his lustre. The upcoming adventure Mortdecai was one of several new titles on Lionsgate International’s prestige slate alongside Gods Of Egypt and the reimagining of Point Break. All had sold out by Saturday. Patrick Wachsberger also screened footage from Wally Pfister’s sci-fi epic Transcendence. “For us, it’s been absolutely fantastic,” he said of AFM. Other must-haves in a market short on such projects were QED

Too close to home at Pitch Conference Experts Tobin Armbrust and Cassian Elwes advised aspiring film-makers to be specific in their pitches to executives, as they listened to aspirants propose their passion projects at the AFM Pitch Conference yesterday. Armbrust, president of worldwide production and acquisitions for

International’s Tom Hardy Yakuza thriller The Outsider, Corsan’s Expiration with Bruce Willis, HanWay’s Brooklyn and IFT’s Your Voice In My Head. Good Universe’s Rocketman — reportedly carrying a $15m UK price tag — and Embankment’s Boychoir were also hot sellers. Talent attachments Elton John, Hardy and Dustin Hoffman were among a celebrity coterie that swung into Santa Monica to meet buyers. Don Cheadle talked up his Miles Davis biopic, Kill The Trumpet Player, for IM Global and Russell Crowe enthused about directorial debut The Water Diviner for Mister Smith.

Exclusive Media, asked one pitcher to add in “more specificity in plot and more specificity in tone”. Armbrust advised: “You need a point of access for the audience. People love detail — it’s what makes certain movies really work.” He added: “If you were pitching

Billy Elliott, you’d give details of a few specific scenes.” Producer-agent Elwes advised another slightly generic pitcher: “It might be helpful to say, ‘This is the kind of actor I’m thinking of.’” He added: “I usually hate it when pitches reference other films too much. But you could reference other

That starts to make us think, ‘That’s the style.’” Things hit a little too close to home when one man pitched a buddy comedy called My AFM, about a washed-up agent and an aspiring young writer whose paths cross as they try to pitch a project at AFM. Elwes said: “I don’t want to be mean, but there’s no chance this movie is
