Self Made
Geffen’s life swap with WestEnd BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
UK outfit WestEnd Films has boarded sales on Shira Geffen’s sophomore feature Self Made (Boreg), which is due to be completed in time for Cannes. The drama, produced by David Mandil’s Movie Plus, and Moshe Edery and Leon Edery of United King, shot in Israel last summer. It stars Sarah Adler alongside newcomer Samira Saraya. Waltz With Bashir editor Nili Feller is on board. Shot in Hebrew and Arabic, Geffen’s film follows two women — one Palestinian and one Israeli — who are forced to swap lives on opposite sides of the border after a mix-up at a checkpoint. Self Made reunites the production and sales team behind Oscarnominated 2011 drama Footnote. Geffen’s 2007 debut, Jellyfish, won the Camera d’Or.
Sienna Miller has landed the lead in Whit Stillman’s upcoming Jane Austen adaptation, which UK sales outfit Protagonist has added to its EFM slate. Chloe Sevigny, best known for roles in Zodiac and Boys Don’t Cry, has also been cast as a close friend of Miller’s character in the period comedy, titled Jane Austen’s Love & Friendship. Stillman is gearing up for a
summer shoot in Ireland on his adaptation of the novella by Emma and Pride And Prejudice author Austen. Miller, nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Alfred Hitchcock TV biopic The Girl, will play the lead in the comedy, which is produced by Katie Holly of Dublinbased Bl!nder Films (Citadel) and Stillman’s outfit Westerly Films. Uncertainty continued to swirl over the future of Exclusive Media last night as it appeared that co-chairs Nigel Sinclair and Guy East were headed for the exit. As Alex Walton and his team pressed ahead with sales on the reconstituted Black Mass project starring Johnny Depp, the cochairs were locked in crisis talks. While The Woman In Black was a
bona fide smash, the disappointing global performance of Rush and the financial ramifications of Exclusive’s top-heavy structure appear to have tested the patience of backers Dasym Investment Strategies. Insiders noted that Sinclair and East, who own part of Exclusive, could segue into a producer role on the back of their past successes. Speculation has turned to who will now run the company, with

some suggesting Exclusive Media COO Mark Schipper as the strongest potential candidate. On Friday, CEO and co-chair Sinclair stated: “Exclusive Media’s management is engaged in collaborative discussions with our partners from Dasym Investment Strategies BV regarding the forward plan for the company. We will make an announcement regarding the outcome at the appropriate time.”

Toronto doc Watermark has sold to a number of major territories for eOne Films International, including the US (eOne), Australia (Madm a n ), B e n e l u x ( C i n é a r t ), German-speaking Europe (Senator), UK (Soda Pictures) and India (Pictureworks). Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky’s doc, which screens in the Berlinale Special strand, charts how water shapes the lives of people from around the globe. Baichwal’s docs Payback and Manufactured Landscapes both played at Sundance. UK-based Harold van Lier now leads eOne’s newly ramped international sales team, with Montreal-based Anick Poirier set to lead subsidiary label Seville International.

Moland woos Indian Bride BY WENDY MITCHELL
Hans Petter Moland, who has In Order Of Disappearance in Competition, will direct The Indian Bride, adapted by Erlend Loe from Karin Fossum’s bestseller of the same title. The film is set for a summer 2015 shoot in India and Norway on a budget of $5.4m-$6.8m (¤4m¤5m). The psychological drama/ tragic love story will be produced as a joint venture between Scandi powerhouses Tre Vanner/Svensk (Sweden) and Motlys (Norway). The lead producers are Helen Ahlsson of Tre Vanner/Svensk and Yngve Saether of Motlys. The story follows a longtime bachelor who meets and marries an Indian beauty, who is later murdered. Saether told Screen: “I felt immediately that this wasn’t a traditional crime story but more of a dramatic love story.” The team expects to confirm a sales company after the Berlinale, and are meeting with potential Indian partners here. “There is a lot of interest due to the popularity of the novel and the team,” Ahlsson said. No cast is attached yet.
UDI snaps up international sales on Gavin’s Hector Urban Distribution International (UDI) has picked up international sales on Hector, starring Peter Mullan as a homeless man who tries to reconnect with his past life. The feature, previously known as Victor, marks the directorial debut
of photographer Jake Gavin. Shooting started earlier this week on location in Glasgow and will continue in London via Liverpool. The film is set for an autumn delivery. Stephen Malit will produce alongside Scottish co-producer
Simon Mallinson. David Raedecker, who picked up Sundance’s best cinematography prize in 2012 for his work on Sally El Hosaini’s My Brother The Devil, is also attached to the project. Melanie Goodfellow

GFM tunes into Schmidt’s Voice

GFM Films is to handle international sales on Thorsten Schmidt’s $6m feature Hear My Voice, produced by Nils Dunker of Lailaps Pictures. The film is billed as an Israeli Slumdog Millionaire, centring on a young Palestinian girl who competes in a TV talent show in a bid to make her dreams a reality. Hear My Voice, an English-language feature, is due to shoot later this year for delivery in summer 2015. Casting is underway. GFM Films, the London-based production, financing and sales outfit run by industry veterans Guy Collins, Michael Ryan and Fred Hedman, is also continuing sales on big-budget Japanese sci-fi animated adventure Harlock: Space Pirate. GFM now has a re-edited English-language version of the film for the international marketplace and is looking to close some of the remaining major territories, among them the UK, Germany and the US.
Bavaria Film and Senator Film’s joint venture, Bavaria Pictures, has unveiled plans for adaptations of international bestsellers and local comedies over the next 12 months. Production is set to roll later this year on Mexican director Everardo Gout’s $35m adaptation of James Patterson and Liza Marklund’s thriller, The Postcard Killers, as a co-production with the UK’s Good and George Films. Bavaria Pictures’ Jan Kaiser told Screen that $2.2m (¤1.6m) of funding had come from the Bavar-
ian regional film fund for the project, which is being handled internationally by FilmNation. Meanwhile, a spring 2015 start is scheduled for the filming of an adaptation of the first book in Oliver Pötzsch’s The Hangman’s Daughter series. Bavaria Pictures is in talks with potential US partners for the $20m project, which already has Munich-based Lionsheart as a co-producer. A previously announced international project, Bille August’s adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s Beware Of Pity, is now going into
the financing stage to be a co-production between Hungary, Austria and Germany. In Germany, director Christian Alvart will direct the comedy Halbe Brüder, starring rapper Sido, comedian ‘Teddy’ Tedros Teclebrhan and The Physician’s Fahri Yardim, as a co-production with Konrad Film and Alvart’s Syrreal Entertainment. Universal Pictures will distribute in Germany. In addition, Josefine Preuss is to headline Holger Haase’s comedy Bodycheck, set in the world of Bavarian ice hockey.
Kino Lorber gets Tip Top Kino Lorber has acquired US rights from Rezo Films to Serge Bozon’s Directors’ Fortnight 2013 feature, Tip Top. Bozon’s follow-up to La France, which Kino Lorber also distributed in the US, stars Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain as detectives on the case of a dead Algerian informant. Tip Top will receive its US premiere at next month’s Rendez-Vous With French Cinema in New York. Jeremy Kay

Spanish outfit DeAPlaneta continues to do good business on Tom Fernandez’s family comedy, Millionaire Dog (previously known as Pancho), closing a deal at the EFM for German-speaking Europe with Wild Bunch Germany. Deals have also recently closed
with AB Droits Audiovisuels for French-speaking Europe, CDC United Network for Latin American TV rights, Volgafilm for CIS, Krisco Media for the Middle East and India, and Medyavizyon for Turkey. DeAPlaneta, which is showing footage during the EFM and plans to screen the film at the Cannes
Marché, will release in Spain in June. Fernandez’s comedy follows Pancho, a Jack Russell terrier who encounters unexpected dangers after winning the lottery. Also on DeAPlaneta’s slate is horror Viral, which sold pre-market to Eurofilms for Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia.

Weydemann Brothers is planning to reunite with director Damian John Harper, whose debut Los Angeles receives its world premiere here in Forum today. Producers Jakob and Jonas Weydemann collaborated with US director Harper on Mexican gang drama Los Angeles. Their next project together will be In The Middle Of The River (working title), which is again being developed in close collaboration with ZDF’s Das Kleine Fernsehspiel unit. US-born Harper has set the family drama in a Native American reservation in Arizona. Principal photography is set to begin in winter 2014-15. In addition, Weydemann is planning debut features with German directors Paul Florian Müller and Philipp Döring. Müller’s comedy Sex & Crime is set to shoot in NRW and Berlin in autumn 2014, while Döring’s ensemble film Das Kleine Paradies is set to shoot in summer 2015.

AMBI unveils Sights Of Death by Melanie Goodfellow
Fledgling production and film finance group AMBI Pictures is making its EFM debut with upcoming sci-fi film Sights Of Death starring Danny Glover, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, Stephen Baldwin and Michael Madsen. The production, directed by Alessandro Capone, has
just wrapped in Rome. Set in 2047, the film pits Baldwin and Glover as rebels against Hauer, Anderson and Madsen, who play the unscrupulous military personnel of a tyrannical central confederate government. Rome-based AMBI was founded in September 2013 by Italian-Canadian producer Andrea Iervolino and
Monika Bacardi with the aim of making three to four films a year. Other upcoming productions include Devil May Care and In Limbo, both to be directed by Gabriela Tagliavini (Ladies’ Night), and Marco Risi’s low-budget Tre Tocchi, which is in post-production. AMBI is handling international sales on its films.

Hurd-Wood finds Origin BY GEOFFREY MACNAB
Rising UK actress Rachel HurdWood (Peter Pan) is to star in Second Origin, the new film that late Spanish director Bigas Luna was originally slated to direct. Here at the EFM, Manifest Film Sales has announced the imminent start of production on the project. Luna, who died in April 2013 during pre-production, is still billed as co-director. His friend, co-writer and director Carles Porta is now taking the helm.
A sci-fi romance that is set in a post-apocalyptic world, Second Origin follows two young people struggling to survive among the ruins. Based on the bestselling Catalan novel Mecanoscrit Del Segon Origen by Manuel de Pedrolo, the film is a Spain-UK co-production, produced by Oscar Rodriguez of Antartida Produccions and Christine Alderson of Ipso Facto Films. Shooting will begin on February 17 in Lleida and Barcelona.

What inspired you to become an actor? I saw Good Will Hunting a couple of years after it came out, and I was so moved by it that I knew I wanted to be an actor. It just felt like something I had never experienced before. Who would be your dream director to work with?
I’m a big fan of Martin Scorsese’s work. He seems like someone who loves actors, is fun to be around and has a great heart for telling stories. What are you working on next? Jim Taihuttu’s Ratu Adil. This will be my third film with Jim after Rabat and Wolf. We will hopefully start shooting in 2015.

’71 Reviewed by Mark Adams A tense and exciting action drama about a young British soldier stranded on the mean streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland in the early years of The Troubles, the impressively mounted ’71 is a remarkably assured feature debut for Yann Demange. While politics lie at the heart of the film, its story does not aim to tackle the deeply thorny issue of the sectarian divide — instead it focuses on the horrors of a teen soldier caught up in a situation he can barely understand. Screening in Competition here, the film balances intense and often thrilling action with intriguingly developed and complex supporting characters. The young lead soldier may be something of an innocent abroad, but those he comes into contact with are caught up in the dark complexities of the two violent sides of the conflict. The film is also a great calling card for the talents of France-born, UK-based director Demange (Channel 4 series Top Boy), who has crafted a film that juggles dramatic sensibilities with well-staged moments of full-on action. In England in 1971, new recruit Gary Hook (O’Connell) and his fellow squaddies expect to be posted to Germany, but find themselves sent to Northern Ireland — “because of the deteriorating security situation in Belfast”. The young recruits are thrust straight into action when they have to escort the brutal Royal Ulster Constabulary in a house search in the Catholic community.

The city is divided between Protestant Loyalist areas (defined as “friendly” by the officers) and the Catholic Nationalist areas (“hostile”), with the latter also torn apart by a feud between the official IRA and the younger, more radical and violent Provisional IRA. When the soldiers find themselves under attack by an angry crowd, Hook and his comrade Thommo (Lowden) are separated from the squad, and to his horror Hook sees his friend shot point-blank by two men. Before he is also targeted, Hook manages to run off in the confusion and is chased through a maze of narrow back-alleys and rat-runs (in a gripping and thrilling sequence similar to the chase scene in Point Break), finally managing to take refuge in an outhouse. Under cover of darkness Hook steals a jumper to cover his uniform and tries to find his way through the city streets, dodging running battles between
Protestant and Catholic youth, and eventually being ‘rescued’ by a loyalist boy named Billy (McKinley) — whose accent is so thick it actually may need to be subtitled — who takes him to a loyalist pub. But things go from bad to worse as the pub is devastated by a bomb blast. Seriously wounded he is helped by a father and daughter — Eamon (Dormer) and Brigid (Murphy). He is carried back to their flat in a Catholic estate, the same area the soldiers were warned not to enter during their first briefing. With both the army and Provisional IRA gunmen hunting for him, the scene is set for a final showdown as the young soldier witnesses the brutal deviousness of the conflict as bodies fall and duplicitous pacts are made. The dangerous complexities of The Troubles in Northern Ireland during that period are viewed with uncomprehending eyes by the young soldier, with Jack O’Connell impressive in a role that calls for him to be naive and disbelieving about the horrors around him. The film is at its tense, visceral best as a terrified, injured and confused Hook has to find his way through the warren of streets, with Demange filming the sequences with a great sense of pace and excitement. ’71 is beautifully shot by Tat Radcliffe and benefits from wonderful production design and costumes. A book-end device of Hook and his young brother is there to reinforce the emotional value but in truth adds little to the film, with its rather low-key ending actually detracting from the intensity that has gone before.

Reviewed by Mark Adams A powerfully unnerving and gently harrowing story of a young boy burdened by too many responsibilities and forced to grow up way too young, Edward Berger’s impressively staged Jack is given additional pathos thanks to a quite mesmerising performance by young Ivo Pietzcker. The film, which screened here in Competition, demands attention thanks to its stark and unsentimental story, and while a non-star cast will make it a tough sell internationally, it will be an easy fit into other film festivals — especially youth-oriented ones — and a Berlin award might also help sales. But Jack is a thoroughly watchable film that never resorts to overly dramatic moments, instead favouring a steady and thoughtful story that is respectful to the children’s journey. Although he is just 10 years old, Jack (Pietzcker) takes full responsibility for himself and his little brother, Manuel (Arms), assuming the ‘man of the house’ mantle with his flighty but loving mother Sanna (Heyer) at work during the day and often out at night. When she brings a lover home, Jack is intolerant of the intervention of a new ‘man’ in their flat, and while she adores her children she is clearly too young and unfocused to look after them properly. When Manuel scalds himself in a boiling-hot bath, Jack is blamed for the incident and social services send him to a children’s home. While he enjoys the order and compassion there, he misses his mother and brother desperately, and is upset when she fails to pick him up for time together. After an incident with brutish older boy Danilo (Arnolds), Jack runs away, managing to find his way through Berlin to his family flat. After finding no sign of his mother, he manages to get Manuel from the flat where he has been deposited and the pair roam the streets searching the places where they think Sanna may be, and sleep rough in parks and in an underground car park. They come across some adults who are helpful and others who are brutal, but rather inspirationally Jack is always ordered, resourceful and confident in terms of looking after them both. Berger and co-writer Nele Mueller-Stöfen — who also plays a key role as head of the children’s home — have crafted a sensitive, compassionate and engagingly unsentimental portrait of two boys and their rather brutal plight. Their journey through an unforgiving city takes them into some dreary and unpleasant areas (a throbbing party in a grungy drugridden flat, a battered car where they sleep in the car park and a concert auditorium where they think Sanna may be working), but the story never really places them in peril. Instead, their journey is made oddly tender and even poetic at times — there are almost pastoral moments as Jack wanders through woods — as they search resolutely for their mother.

No stranger to mystificatory game-playing, France’s most controversial novelist will get them stroking their chins on the Left Bank — and with luck, far beyond that — with his starring self-portrait in The Kidnapping Of Michel Houellebecq (L’Enlevement De Michel Houellebecq), a wry, relaxed, extremely entertaining footnote to recent Gallic literary gossip. Houellebecq gamely plays himself — or a fictional version thereof — in a film inspired by the novelist’s still unexplained real-life disappearance in 2010; this comedy imagines what might have happened over those few days. The no-frills low-budgeter from versatile writer-director Guillaume Nicloux — whose CV ranges from mainstream hit Le Poulpe to severe literary adaptation The Nun — gives Houellebecq free range to send himself up in a film that has elements of mock-doc and traces of the French autobiographical-novel genre known as ‘autofiction’. Most of all, though, the film plays like a Gallic answer to Curb Your Enthusiasm, with Houellebecq as a literary Larry David. Highbrow distributors and festivals will take a shine to this cheerfully sour pleasure. Houellebecq, who for years has cannily promoted his image as a misanthrope, has become a megastar on the strength of novels such as Whatever, The Elementary Particles (both adapted for the screen) and his recent The Map And The Territory, in which he imagined his own murder. Formally adventurous, outspoken and self-confessedly intolerant about everything from sexual politics to race and religion, Houellebecq revels in his role as a cerebral shock jock. He is so controversial, indeed, that it was seriously mooted during his disappearance that he may have been abducted by Al-Qaeda. In this film, the answer is simpler. We first see Houellebecq — shambling, dishevelled and gnomelike — sitting in his Paris flat discussing kitchen decoration, then joining a piano-playing friend. Just when the film appears to be going nowhere, three menacing types — exLagerfeld bodyguard Luc (Schwarz), athletic Mathieu (Nicourt) and ringleader Maxime (Lefrancois) — burst into the writer’s flat and carry him off locked in a box, the kidnapping being at the behest of an unknown client. They fully expect the Goncourt Prize winner to fetch a handsome ransom, even though he assures them no-one will pay out, least of all French president Francois Hollande. Once we get to the hideout, the film settles into a laidback, spiky and seemingly improvised mode, with an excellent cast rising to the absurdities of the occasion. Houellebecq makes a surprisingly likeable play on his image as a shrivelled equal-opportunities hater, sometimes making outrageous political pronouncements, such as calling for civil war in Belgium.

Butter On The Latch Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Like her follow-up feature Thou Wast Mild And Lovely (also featured in the Berlinale Forum section, see below), Josephine Decker’s first fiction outing, Butter On The Latch, could loosely be categorised as arthouse meta-horror in an elegantly lo-fi indie vein. It is an intriguing hybrid, an improvised psychological drama with elements of rural Gothic, social comedy and even documentary — and it is therefore not surprising that the film never quite finds its feet. Its looseness focused considerably by two female leads with commanding and likeable presences, the film nevertheless struggles to find its dramatic shape in its commitment to fragmentation, alienation and at times, wilfully enigmatic oddness. A pre-credits sequence seems designed to throw us from the start, as a woman named Sarah (Small) emerges from a New York performance show and receives a distress call from a friend who is apparently in mortal jeopardy — to which Sarah reacts by having a wild night at a club, herself waking up the next morning in seemingly perilous straits. We join up again with Sarah somewhere in a forest — in Mendocino, California, in fact — where she is meeting her friend, Isolde (Chae-Lawrence). They have come for, of all things, a Balkan folk festival, where among the tambourine workshops and Bulgarian choir singing, Isolde hopes to get over a broken relationship. The film finds an even keel for a while with some relaxed intimate talk

between the two women — all the dialogue is improvised — whose ease with each other is palpable and very affecting. But Decker’s love of fractured editing sends the film into disorienting terrain: after a drunken night lost in the woods, the two women become mysteriously estranged, and while Sarah hits it off with hunky young banjo player Steph (Hewson), some kind of Old World spirit seems to be taking its effect on Isolde. What’s apparently at work here is a drama about two urban women attempting to escape from city tensions into a fantasy of a romantic rural Other — only to get entangled both with their own psyches and (possibly) with something
darker. That something is evoked, knowingly and playfully, by the film as a kind of Blair Witch woodland weirdness, equated with some eerie vision of female potency (shades of von Trier’s Antichrist). Meanwhile, the overall strangeness is intriguingly situated against a vividly unlikely backdrop — a real-life Mendocino folk fest, complete with its population of folksy and arts-and-craft patrons. The film is notable for its singularity rather than, finally, its capacity to touch a nerve, but director-writer-editor Decker and cinematographer Ashley Connor at least establish a restlessly impressionistic style that bodes well for future collaborations — and that has already evolved persuasively in their second film.
taunts, while unworldly, possibly disturbed Sarah seems determined to get him hot under the collar. Much of the oblique storytelling is done by elegantly impressionistic camerawork, with plenty of disorienting hand-held, and images gliding alluringly in and out of focus, sometimes settling sharply on foliage or spiderwebs. Perhaps there really is something nasty going on around the farm — yet intimations of generic horror are eclipsed by the more tangible atmosphere of sexual tension and impending violence when Akin’s wife, Drew (Slaysman), drops in for a visit. Things sometimes verge (knowingly, it seems) on near-parody — Sarah’s weirdo waif and the scowling Jeremiah are types hardly unknown
either in US film or fiction (Decker thanks John Steinbeck in her end credits, but William Faulkner seems another obvious reference point). And there is one moment when Decker seems all too willing to pull us abruptly out of the fiction by throwing in a series of incongruously jokey inter titles: “That morning… Earlier that morning.” By the end, Decker has tightened the screws considerably, but with less payoff than you would hope — leaving the impression of ingenious meta-Americana rather than a properly cogent piece. But, what with its characterful acting and potently nerve-jangling string score, the film delivers an intriguing slant on ruralperil convention, even if it never completely remaps the old weird territory.
Thou Wast Mild And Lovely Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Of two films by US independent newcomer Josephine Decker to play in this year’s Berlinale Forum, her second feature, Thou Wast Mild And Lovely, is the more conventional — and by far the more alluring of the pair. In this film and its predecessor, Butter On The Latch, sometime documentarist Decker and her collaborators, notably cinematographer Ashley Connor, have developed a distinctive signature. But it is in Mild And Lovely that the stylistics gel properly into an intriguing slant on psychological chiller tropes. This story of a very bad rural summer plays with elements of both art cinema and horror, but comes across most strongly as an unsettling character piece. Distribution prospects are moderate, but the film will benefit from placing one foot in the realm of Malick-esque artsy delicacy, the other in American Gothic genre territory. The setting is a remote farm where a childlike young woman, Sarah (Traub), lives with grizzled, gruff-voiced Jeremiah (Longstreet), apparently her dad: clues to the strangeness of things round about these parts comes from the eerily poetic voiceover that Sarah delivers intermittently throughout the film, concerning her obsessively invoked lover. That lover — or perhaps just the latest candidate for the role — turns up in the form of Akin (indefatigable indie regular Joe Swanberg), a married man who has signed on as a handyman about the place. But the job won’t be easy: Jeremiah plies him with

Nuoc 2030 Reviewed by David D’Arcy In Nuoc 2030, the imminent inundation of Vietnam is the underpinning of a science-fiction drama. Logistically ambitious, sometimes elegant, it reminds you that good intentions and impending cataclysms don’t always make a stirring movie. Nghiem-Minh Nguyen Vo’s soggy tale, which he describes as the first science-fiction movie made in Vietnam, is short on science and long on tortured romance. A novelty, given the director’s background as an engineer and physicist, it should sail through the art-oriented festival circuit, but it never finds a drama as urgent as the environmental crisis at its core. If its radiant lead, Quynh Hoa, has an international career, Nuoc 2030 could have a shelf life. If not, it will join the long list of forgotten disaster films. In Nuoc 2030, the water level has overtaken much of southern Vietnam, where the remaining locals fish for dwindling marine life, and vegetables are consumed like drugs. Sao (Quynh Hoa) struggles with companion Thi (Thach Kim Long) as they abandon their stilt house on a vast bay rimmed by distant high-rises. Thi takes a job with the new industry of floating farms that grow toxic crops, and turns up dead. As we flash back to Sao’s earlier life, Thi’s killing and the eroding environment come into focus. Quynh Hoa gives her character a stoicism befitting years at the mercy of men and the elements while Thi is a gaunt, weathered man worn down by destiny. All the cast is at the mercy of the flat script, which leaves them unmoored. Yet that shortcoming gives the film a special credibility. Not dependent on a sudden calamity like a hurricane or tsunami, which engulfed seaside communities overnight, the hardship of Nuoc 2030 operates according to climate-change predictions.

There are precedents for a North American director immersing himself in the migrant experience from a perspective south of the border — notably Joshua Marston’s Maria Full Of Grace and Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre — and Damian John Harper takes the attempt at cultural empathy a step further, by forming his cast entirely of the inhabitants of a Mexican hamlet. But what he gains in authenticity, he loses in dramatic impact, and Los Angeles is an unlikely prospect for even those arthouse distributors traditionally tempted by the milieu. Harper’s first feature starts auspiciously, though, with the sound of dogs barking, frantic running and a voice counting out vicious punches. As the film fades into dusk, the victim is dragged to his feet, spitting blood. This is Mateo (Bautista Matias), a teenager who is being initiated into a gang. In this impoverished Zapotec community in rural Oaxaca, work across the border is seen as a lifeline. Mateo and his family are scraping together money to send him illegally to Los Angeles. Mateo believes membership of a local outfit will pave the way to getting “down with the hood” in Los Angeles. He is making progress. Robbing a church earns the respect of the loathsome gang leader, Daniel. But when he refuses to kill a rival gang member, it is back to square one, with his own life in danger. But when non-actors do not click naturally with the camera, they have no technique to make it happen. And that is the case with Mateo, a good-looking lad who does not spark as the luckless hero, leaving a hole at the heart of the film. In his own way, Harper also fails to engage, his constant use of a shallow depth of field withholding a visual account of the community he is attempting to depict. It is an exhausting affectation that leaves one feeling short-changed.

Black Coal, Thin Ice
Breaking the Ice Boneyard Entertainment China has teamed with Omnijoi Media and China Film to bring their debut joint project to Berlin: Black Coal, Thin Ice. Liz Shackleton reports et to receive its world premiere in Competition in Berlin on Wednesday, Chinese director Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice is co-produced by Jiangsu-based Omnijoi Media Corp, China Film and Boneyard Entertainment China (BEC), the Hong Kong subsidiary of Daniel J Victor’s New York-based Boneyard Entertainment. Victor established BEC in 2010 to work with Omnijoi on a slate of Chinese films. Black Coal, Thin Ice, their first collaboration, tells the story of a former detective (Liao Fan) investigating a series of murders, who falls in love with a woman (Gwei Lun Mei) who is linked to all the victims. Vivian Qu and Wan Juan produced with Shen Yang and Zhang Dajun as co-producers. In the US, Victor has been involved in financing and producing independent films such as Hal Hartley’s Henry Fool, Billy Bob Thornton’s Sling Blade and Greenfingers, starring Helen Mirren and Clive Owen.

How did you meet Jiangsu Omnijoi and can you explain what you plan to do together? Daniel J Victor Boneyard Entertainment was introduced to Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation and Jiangsu Omnijoi through a series of longstanding relationships with people here in the US who have been doing business in China for 25 years. From the time BEC entered into a framework agreement with Jiangsu Omnijoi back in March 2010, our mutual goal has always been to build a long-term partnership to develop, finance and produce movies in China. When we signed our agreement, we didn’t know what the first project would

Would you describe Black Coal, Thin Ice as a genre film? DJV Personally, I think Black Coal, Thin Ice is definitely a genre film. One of the things I loved about Diao’s script is that it feels to me like a modern take on a noir film from the ’40s and ’50s. I think it has some of the same cynicism, the weight of life and even smouldering, hidden sexuality. It felt like a story that, set in the US, might have been directed by Samuel Fuller or Elia Kazan. In addition, like many of the noir films, Diao’s script was steeped in specific geography. Obviously, it isn’t in black and white and doesn’t follow every precept of film noir, but that’s the way the script and the movie feel to me. It comes at a time of transition in China, just as film noir did in the US. Were you involved in the development process? And did you give the project a steer on becoming more accessible for international markets? DJV When we went into this, I knew there would be areas where I could offer little in the way of value; and then there were areas where I could play a meaningful role. The development process was the first area where I could really contribute and it was one of the most interesting parts of the early stages of working together for a few reasons. The first was
simply that it was the first time we had really exchanged ideas and had back and forth from a creative perspective. The second was that it was the first time we had faced the two things that took the most acclimation by both BEC and Jiangsu Omnijoi — distance and language. By the time I had gotten a draft of the script, had it translated, read it, thought about it, and was able to express myself in an e-mail, oftentimes a couple of weeks had passed, and whatever the situation may have been when I received the draft, could very well have changed during that time. Diao, Wan Juan, Vivian Qu, Shen Yang and everyone else were all exchanging ideas and solving problems while I was working thousands of miles away. I think this worked even in the face of these obstacles because everyone was open to the exchange of ideas, regardless of whose idea it was. Can you explain a bit more about who is investing in the film and why? DJV BEC has several equity investors who have been on board from the get-go and none of us had an interest in co-financing and co-producing just a single film. Like me, they had a long-term vision for what a BEC/Jiangsu Omnijoi partnership could be. BEC will be doing a second round of financing in 2014 and, in just starting to talk to people, there is tremendous interest in being involved in a company that is in the film business in China, and little interest in putting money into one-off films. The investors are fairly varied, many of whom, but not all, are celebrities in their own right — for example, global stars like Carmelo Anthony and 50 Cent. I’m sure they all had different reasons for being interested in BEC, but I think perhaps there is a fascination with China and the entertainment explosion going on there. And some of them are huge celebrities in China. How will Boneyard recoup on the film? DJV Jiangsu Omnijoi and BEC are both copyright holders and equity partners of, and in, the film along with China Film Group. BEC will recoup pro s rata and pari passu with the other equity holders. n

Making its international premiere here in Forum, 10 Minutes is Lee Yong-seung’s debut feature. The film world premiered in Busan’s New Currents competition, where it picked up the Fipresci prize and an audience award. It tells the story of a young man preparing to pass the tests for his dream job as a television producer. But under pressure to support his family, he is thrown into a dilemma when his boss at the government facility where he works offers him a full-time job. 10 Minutes is the first graduation feature from Dankook University’s Graduate School of Cinematic Content, which was established by Busan founding festival director Kim Dong-ho.
Making its world premiere here in Forum, A Dream Of Iron is a documentary directed by Kelvin Kyungkun Park, whose Cheonggyecheon Medley also previously screened in Forum. An extension of a multimedia project, A Dream Of Iron looks back on South Korea’s modernisation under authoritarian rule in the 1960s through the perspective of steel manufacturing and shipbuilding. The film is also set to screen at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in its Documentary Fortnight showcase this month.

Swedish project Gentlemen built extensive sets in Lithuania
Lithuania joins the world stage With the launch of a new film production incentive, Lithuania is aiming to build on its reputation as a capable, low-cost destination for foreign shoots Kvietkauskas points to Lithuania’s already solid film-making base. “Even without this tax incentive, every year we have quite a number of international companies coming to shoot in Lithuania,” he says. “For example we had several shoots last year when productions from Sweden, Italy, the UK and Germany were done in Lithuania. W
hen the Lithuanian parliament voted last year to introduce a new film incentive, the territory’s production sector was given real cause for optimism. Even prior to the incentive Lithuania was hosting international shoots, while local projects have attracted private investment and foreign coproducers. Now, with the new incentive in place after receiving European Commission state aid approval, the stage is set for the Baltic territory to build on this promising base. Lithuania already offers low costs, production expertise and locations that span the coast, lakes, forests and cities. The new incentive adds to the mix a reduction of up to 20% of qualifying Lithuanian spend (see box, right). As the incentive is structured as a tax shelter, foreign projects need to bring a local producer on board who will be responsible for raising 20% of the Lithuanian spend from local investors seeking to lessen their tax liability. Rolandas Kvietkauskas, director of the Lithuanian Film Centre, says investor interest in the local film sector has been growing. “There is certain enthusiasm in the film sector because we get more national productions and they are more interesting and they get more and more audiences,” he explains. “So it means the general feeling about the film industry in Lithuania is very positive.” The Lithuanian Film Centre administers the new incentive, including its cultural test, and also offers funding for local productions.
Bunch that combines a feature film called Gentlemen and a six-hour television series called Gentlemen & Gangsters. The project is set in Sweden in the 1970s, and after looking at territories such as Hungary and the Czech Republic, Gentlemen opted to shoot in Lithuania because “we felt both the costs and the passion for the project were extremely good”, says Fredrik Heinig, producer and founding partner of B-Reel. Gentlemen shot in Lithuania for 43 days last year — prior to the introduction of the incentive — and used an old Soviet sports arena to build sets, as well as shooting on location for a week. “It takes place in one of the main streets in Sweden and we actually built one-and-a-half blocks of that outside, as it looked in the 1970s,” Heinig explains. “We built a massive apartment as well.” Heinig estimates the construction costs of the sets were 40% cheaper in Lithuania than in Sweden. “If you’re going to do heavy set construction as we did, it was so much cheaper to build,” he says. The production brought about 25% of its crew from Sweden and hired the remainder from Lithuania. With a total shoot of 121 days, Gentlemen also shot in Stockholm, Denmark and Paris. Kvietkauskas says that Lithuanian crews are strong in technical departments, such as photography, lighting, sound and construction, and that producers are skilled at servicing foreign shoots and working with foreign partners (of the seven features the Lithuanian Film Centre backed in 2013, three were co-productions — with France, Finland and Latvia). B-Reel worked with local company Dansu on Gentlemen and Heinig says: “We really felt they understood what we were trying to do with the project.” Lithuania’s international offer is also boosted by a range of locations, including cities that can double for other places. Gentlemen, for example, shot sequences set in 1960s Berlin in bars and streets in Vilnius. One missing piece of the puzzle is a major studio facility, with productions currently utilising former industrial buildings — although Kvietkauskas says plans to build a studio are in the works. In the meantime, Lithuania is ready for the world stage. Kvietkauskas says: “Before this tax incentive we had a lot to prove the quality of Lithuania. Now we have put this on the table, we s also have the economic argument.” n
