Chloe Sevigny, Johnny Galecki go for Cleanse BY JEREMY KAY
The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki is to star opposite Chloe Sevigny and Anjelica Huston in fantasy horror The Master Cleanse. XYZ Films is handling international rights to the Bron Studios and Gilbert Films’ production, which mixes dark humour with body horror. XYZ is showing a pre-visualisation of the film here, while WME Global arranged financing and represents North America. The Master Cleanse centres on a heartbroken man who attends a spiritual retreat, only to discover the course releases more than everyday toxins. Producers are Jordan Horowitz for Los Angeles-based Gilbert Films, Galecki for Alcide Bava Pictures and Aaron L Gilbert for Vancouver-based Bron Studios, which is currently in production on Cannes market title The Driftless Area starring Zooey Deschanel. The Kids Are All Right producer Gary Gilbert serves as executive producer with Todd Masters, Margot Hand and John Raymonds. Production is set for early July in Vancouver. Bobby Miller, whose appropriately bizarre short film Tub screened in Sundance 2010, makes his feature directorial debut. The film is being produced in association with XYZ Films, Creative Wealth Media Finance and MASTERSFX, the effects house that worked on Robocop and Elysium, and will conjure creatures and effects for the production. WME represents Miller and jointly handles Galecki with Management 360.

Worldview acts tough on Mel Gibson thriller BY JEREMY KAY
Worldview Entertainment is to cofinance and produce Jean-Francois Richet’s thriller Blood Father to star Mel Gibson. The move marks Worldview’s seventh collaboration with Wild Bunch, which has introduced the project to international buyers here. CAA arranged financing and represents US rights. Gibson will star as an ex-con who protects his estranged teenage daughter from murderous drug dealers.
Filming on Blood Father began earlier this month in New Mexico. Erin Moriarty also stars and Peter Craig adapted the script from his novel. Why Not Productions’ Pascal Caucheteux and Sebastien Lemercier will produce with Chris Briggs alongside Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow and COO Molly Conners. Worldview backers Maria Cestone and Sarah E Johnson are the executive producers alongside Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval.

A24 has become the second US buyer to snap up a Competition title this week, finalising rights in Cannes for Atom Egoyan’s The Captive with eOne International.
The US outfit, which acquired the film in partnership with DirecTV and plans to release this autumn, brokered the deal with WME on behalf of eOne and the film-makers. Ryan Reynolds, Scott
The companies are working together on Michel Hazanavicius’s Competition entry The Search and Kim Farrant’s thriller Strangerland, shooting now in Australia starring Nicole Kidman. Last week, Woodrow announced a five-year finance and distribution deal with The Weinstein Company that will see the latter provide 20 US distribution slots over the term. Films under that deal will include Tulip Fever starring Christoph Waltz and The Woman In Gold with Helen Mirren. Speedman and Rosario Dawson star in the thriller, which examines how the kidnapping of a man’s young daughter destroys the relationships among those involved. Egoyan wrote the script with David Fraser. Producers are Egoyan, Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss and Stephen Traynor.

Michael Winterbottom is to direct The Vatican Connection about the true story of the New York detective who first uncovered the Vatican Bank’s links to the Mafia. The director of The Killer Inside Me and upcoming Face Of An Angel will work with screenwriter Paul Viragh to revise an original script by Alessandro Camon, based on Richard Hammer’s award-winning book The Vatican Connection. The production is aiming for a major A-list actor to play detective Joe Coffey, who was working undercover in Manhattan in the 1970s when he stumbled on information linking the Vatican Bank to the Mafia. Producers are John Penotti of Ivanhoe Pictures, Chris Hanley of Muse Productions, Jeff Most of Most Films, Melissa Parmenter of Revolution Films and Bob DeBrino. The cast of The Expendables 3 will cruise down the Croisette in Sovietera tanks tomorrow in what should be the most eye-catching stunt of the festival. The testosterone-fuelled roll-call features Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Dolph Lundgren and Antonio Banderas. Rounding out the crack celebrity platoon are Wesley Snipes, Kellan Lutz, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture and Ronda Rousey. Two qualified drivers will steer the decommissioned BTR60 eightwheel armoured personnel carriers from the east end of the strip to a 10:45am press conference at the Carlton. Only Jet Li and Terry Crews will be unable to join the promotional event for the action sequel, due to prior commitments. Naturally the $2m operation of getting all the film’s stars into Cannes, booking rooms at the Hotel du Cap and renting tanks from a UK company was planned with military precision. “The first idea was a zipline from the top of the Carlton to the beach,” said Millennium Films president Mark Gill. “Then we called the insurance company. We considered helicopters and settled on tanks.” The Expendables 3 will open in August in the US through Lionsgate. Nu Image handles international sales.

Turks update cannes plans The centenary of Turkish cinema celebrations planned in Cannes this week have been severely curtailed in response to the Turkish mine disaster, in which more than 280 people died. A planned trip to the festival by the Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Omer Celik has been cancelled. Celik had been expected to head a 37-strong delegation of leading Turkish politicians and bureaucrats. The original celebration plans included two concerts with Taksim Trio and Baba Zula, both of which have been cancelled. The Turkish reception on May 19 will go ahead, but will be a ‘silent’ event, without music. There are likely to be Turkish retrospectives at other European and Asian festivals later in the year to mark the centenary. Geoffrey Macnab

Un Certain Regard feature Amour Fou has been sold to four major territories ahead of its official screenings in Cannes. The Coproduction Office has closed sales of Jessica Hausner’s romantic drama in Austria (Stadtkino), Germany (Neue Visionen), Sweden (Folkets Bio) and Benelux (Lumiere). The period film, based loosely on the suicide of poet Heinrich von Kleist in 1811, has also been the subject of multiple offers on other territories, with a French buyer expected to be confirmed shortly. Coproduction Office boss Philippe Bober also revealed that A Pigeon On A Branch, the longawaited film from Swedish auteur Roy Andersson, is now almost complete and will be

launched at an autumn festival. The film had been widely tipped to surface in Cannes but, as Bober explained, Andersson was not finished in time. A total of 40 minutes of footage is being screened to buyers at the Marché. “It was the wish to go to Cannes but Roy is still working [on it],” Bober said. “It’s good that Roy is not rushed.”
The Coproduction Office is also beginning sales on Zhou Hao’s The Night, fresh from its Berlinale premiere. It will have its first market screenings here in Cannes. The office is also selling Ulrich Seidl’s In The Basement (Im Keller), his idiosyncratic doc about what Austrians get up to in their basements. The film is expected to appear at an autumn festival.
Pine treks to Highland Highland Film Group has added Chris Pine comedy Mantivities to its Cannes slate. Pine (Star Trek) co-wrote the screenplay and will produce with Sarah Babineau, and Haven Entertainment’s Kevin Mann and Jordana Mollick. Mantivities centres on a group of men who try to instil responsibility in their friend, a former child star, by taking him on a day of activities. It will star real-life friends and Pine’s co-writers Robert Baker, Ian Gotler, Will Greenberg, Drew Howerton and Tony Liebetrau — collectively known as The Button Factory. 16:14 Entertainment’s US-based business partner, Sycamore Entertainment Group, will co-finance the project with Locmatel. Picturehouse Entertainment and Film4’s home entertainment arm 4DVD have acquired UK rights to Nick Cave music documentary 20,000 Days On Earth (sold by HanWay) and Brian Hill’s serialkiller documentary, Thomas Quick: The Making Of A Serial Killer (sold by Independent). Picturehouse has also prebought documentary Dark Horse, sold by Protagonist.

Medient reveals $700m Studioplex plans in US lovesick

Pascal Borno and Scott Karol’s Conquistador Entertainment has boarded sales in Cannes on Lovesick starring Matt LeBlanc, Ali Larter and Chevy Chase. Luke Matheny directed the story about two people, paralysed by the fear of love, who must learn to overcome their phobias. Dean Young wrote the screenplay. Paradigm represents US rights to the film, whose producers Josh Goldstein, Travus Pope and Michael Roiff brokered the deal with Karol. “We are extremely excited to be selling this film at this juncture, as Matt LeBlanc’s TV series Episodes is a worldwide hit and the film showcases his comedic talents,” said Karol. Conquistador’s sales slate includes the Jennifer Aniston drama Cake, which also stars Sam Worthington and Anna Kendrick. Borno and Karol are screening footage on the Croisette.

Production and distribution outfit Medient Studios has revealed further details of the ambitious ‘Studioplex’ it is building in the US. The facility will be built in Effingham County, Georgia, where it can access the state’s generous tax credits. A total of $700m will be invested in construction and infrastructure at the facility over its five-year development plan. Prime Focus is partnering on the “movie-production campus”. Chairman and founder Manu
Kumaran said that Medient was developing “an assembly line” approach to film-making through the new facility. The company recently acquired German sales outfit Atlas International Film. Among the projects Medient is backing — and Atlas is selling — is Kickback, a $12m thriller based on the life and death of crusading journalist Anna Politkovskaya. John Cusack will star as a Russian police officer and Famke Janssen will play the journalist. Kumaran
will produce with Raza Mallal writing and directing. The aim is to shoot later this year in eastern Europe. Here in Cannes, Medient will launch its martial-arts film Kilat, which it is making with new Malaysian partner Tarantella Pictures. Tarantella’s MD Sharad Sharan is expected to direct. Medient, which was founded in 2004, started in India but the company is now active in several countries — Malaysia, Colombia, the US and Germany.
Indian scheme secures UK tie-up By liz Shackleton
UK-based Beautiful Bay Entertainment (BBE) is teaming with film-maker Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan, Lootera) and Tulsea Pictures on an Indian script development programme. Motwane, the programme’s creative adviser, has already selected the first three writer-directors to be supported by the scheme, which aims to contribute to a longer-term development pipeline in the Indian film business. The film-makers will receive funds to develop their projects

from concept to the final script. Tulsea, which manages writers and directors, advised on structuring the programme and will serve as packaging partner on the developed scripts. It represents Mot-
wane as well as the programme’s writer-directors. The film-makers are: Varun Grover, with sports biopic Spin Baloo; Atul Mongia, with noir drama The Antagonist; and Anvita Dutt with Gudiya. Grover wrote lyrics for Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur and is co-writer of Fly Away Solo. Mongia worked as associate director on Titli, which is screening in Un Certain Regard, while Dutt has worked on 10 films as a writer and has several projects underway. BBE will invest in the projects.

French film export agency Unifrance, which fetes its 65th anniversary this year, has released the results of a study on the image of French cinema across the globe — and the findings are surprising. “French cinema is the second most exported cinema in the world after that of the US,” said Unifrance president Jean-Paul Salomé. According to the public poll conducted in 14 countries, the nations most fond of French cinema were Russia, Germany, the US and UK. The most cited French films were Amélie, Intouchables,
Taxi, Léon, Amour, The Artist, The Pianist and Welcome To The Sticks. Interestingly, the French stars with the biggest international reputations belonged to an older generation. In order, Gérard Depardieu came top, followed by Jean Reno, Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Tautou as the best-known French acting names internationally. The best-known directors were Luc Besson, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean Renoir, Roman Polanski, Jean-Jacques Annaud and Claude Lelouch.

distribution slays its dragon Hong Kong-based Distribution Workshop has picked up international rights to animated film Where’s The Dragon, directed by Sing Choong Foo. The feature, which is in post-production, has attracted major voice talents including Zhang Ziyi (The Grandmaster) and Wang Leehom (Lust, Caution). It sees a girl team up with animals from the Chinese Zodiac to search for a lost dragon. It will be released in late 2014 or early 2015. Zombeavers has taken a bite out of the market as Epic Pictures heads Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson revealed a slew of deals. Rights to the Jordan Rubindirected horror comedy have gone to Benelux and German-speaking Europe (Splendid Films), Spain (A Contracorriente Films), France (Zylo), Australia and New Zealand (Roadshow) and the Middle East (Prime Pictures). Epic is understood to be closing a multi-territory deal with a major distributor for the UK, Scandinavia, Latin America and eastern Europe excluding Russia.
Dutch to push 30% rebate By Geoffrey MacnaB
Netherlands Film Fund is to reveal full details of its longawaited 30% cash rebate scheme in Cannes today. Doreen Boonekamp, CEO of the fund, is predicting the $27m (¤20m) scheme will significantly “strengthen the Dutch film industry and position the Netherlands in the international marketplace”. The aim now is to lure international production to the country. Boonekamp is expecting to receive EU state-aid approval in time for today’s announcement. The fund, which has been rushing to launch the scheme as soon as possible, will also present the country’s new National Film Commission this afternoon. Insiders are expecting the first deadline for applications will fall as early as June. The scheme will offer a 30% cash rebate on production spend in Netherlands. Applicants are likely to be asked to have 50% of the overall production budget in place before applying.

Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is to host a special screening at Shochiku’s historic Kabukiza theatre during this year’s festival. It will be one of the highlights of TIFF and take place on October 27. TIFF will hold a press conference this summer to announce what will be shown at the theatre, which rarely screens films. Global Screen has sold fairytale animation The 7th Dwarf across eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. The film has sold to Poland (Kino Swiat), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and CIS (Rekiston Enterprises) and Croatia and other ex-Yugoslavian states (Karantinja). On top of previous deals, including Germany (Universal), agreements include Latin America (Swen), Portugal (Pris), India (PictureWorks), Malaysia and the Philippines (Suraya Filem). Global is launching several projects at the market including Coming In from Marco Kreuzpaintner, which will be released in Germany by Warner Bros. Fresh to the Global slate are Joy Of Fatherhood, directed by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer; Flights Of Fancy from Christian Bach; and Anna Justice’s adaptation of Pinocchio. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Eurimages — the Council of Europe’s co-production fund — is edging closer to admitting non-European countries. The organisation will be holding a meeting in Cannes tomorrow to discuss how this might be achieved. Executive director Roberto Olla said expansion was “unavoidable and actually necessary”. Canada is likely to be the first non-European country to join. No official negotiations have been undertaken but Olla confirmed unofficial talks about Canadian membership are underway.

Sayed Kashua wrote the script based on his bestselling novels Dancing Arabs and Second Person Singular. The film is about a boy who has to leave his provincial family to go to boarding school in Jerusalem. The gala screening will take place at the Sultan’s Pool in the presence of the director and cast. Initial findings of an analysis of the three pilot projects backed by the European Parliament to explore new distribution strategies will be presented by French academic Thomas Paris this morning at an event organised by the European Commission. The event is divided into three groupings: EDAD, co-ordinated by Curzon Film World, SPEED BUNCH, co-ordinated by Wild Bunch, and TIDE, co-ordinated by L’ARP. Paris said that “innovative release formats such as day-anddate or direct-to-VoD can give a boost to a certain number of films
that will therefore benefit from increased exposure, at least cost, in a saturated market. “Concerning the economics of the system as a whole, the experiments seem to indicate no major risk.” “VoD consumption mainly concerns the zones where the film is not visible, or only to a limited degree in theatres.” Among his recommendations, Paris suggested that multiple distribution schemes and varying the length of release windows should be tested. He added that the multi-territorial dimension of the initiative should be extended.

Go-Go Boys back with a vengeance Veteran Israeli producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus hit the Palais des Festivals this evening for the Cannes Classics premiere of Hilla Medalia’s doc The Go-Go Boys, charting the rise and fall of their infamous indie studio, The Cannon Group. Screen caught up with them on ARTE’s yacht. “Cannes owes us big time. We helped put the festival on the map as a place to do business so it’s nice to be getting this screening at the Palais,” says Golan. Throughout the 1980s, the Israeli cousins, or Go-Go Boys as
they were known, were a notorious sales force on the Croisette, operating out of the Carlton Hotel where they pioneered the art of the pre-sale and slate deal. “In the mid-1980s, they used to call Cannes the Cannon Film Festival. The buyers loved us because we did a lot of promotions and parties and screenings in the Palais,” says Globus. “The first time we came to Cannes was in 1964-65. We went to sell black-and-white, Hebrewlanguage movies,” adds Globus. “Did we sell them? Of course we did, we always sell. In the 1960s
“Every generation has their best decade and for a lot of people now that’s the 1980s, so it’s the perfect time to tell our story,” says Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp of Soul Boys Of The Western World, an archive-based documentary. It charts the band’s rise to fame, acrimonious break up and eventual reconciliation. Metro International is selling the doc at Cannes. The idea for the film came about during Spandau Ballet’s 2009 comeback tour when they cut together some old footage from Kemp’s Super8 camera to play during their performance.

“It was such a success that we thought, ‘Why don’t we make a whole movie of it,’” says Kemp who, together with his fellow band members, is in Cannes for the launch of the documentary. “I wanted to make a film that would appeal to people, whether they were fans of the band or not,” says George Hencken, a first-time director. The doc includes home videos of the group in the 1960s and a colourful sequence showing the five young band members arriving in St Tropez to perform their first international concert. “The furthest gig they had ever done before that was Basildon and
suddenly they were in St Tropez,” says Hencken. For Kemp, the chance to revisit the Spandau story — which is done in the film via a series of voiceovers as opposed to talking heads — was “the most cathartic experience I’ve ever had”. “When we broke up, I got rid of all my guitars. I didn’t buy a record for six years. It made me feel sick thinking about music. Now time has passed I can’t wait to get back in it,” says Kemp, who has now turned his hand to directing, with his latest project Top Dog also in the Cannes Market via Manifest Sales.

we worked out of the lobby of the Martinez, then we moved to the Carlton, first basing ourselves in the lobby and on the terrace, and then out of suite 241 for 20 years.” The Cannon Group is mostly remembered for its action B-pictures such as The Delta Force, but the company also financed arthouse fare too, producing films by Jean-Luc Godard, John Cassavetes and Franco Zeffirelli. “The action movies paid for the arthouse movies,” says Golan, who says one of his proudest moments in Cannes was bringing Andrey Konchalovskiy’s Runaway Train to Cannes in 1986. “We had five films in Competition that year,” notes Globus. “We always had a lot of films. I had a partner who liked to do movies and always said ‘yes’ to everyone… it was one of the reasons we split. I wanted to cut the number of films and raise the quality but Menahem just kept making more and more movies.” It’s been nearly 20 years now since the Go-Go Boys have sold a film on the Croisette but remaining true to form 84-year-old Golan is hoping to drum up some finance for his upcoming film Snipers, a $10m project about US soldiers in Afghanistan. “We could shoot it in Israel or Afghanistan. We have a script and hope to sign big stars. I will direct,” he says.

Q&a John Boorman Queen And Country is a sequel to John Boorman’s autobiographical Hope And Glory (1987). Having made a film about his childhood experiences in London during the Blitz, Boorman jumps to 1952, as the now 18-year-old Bill Rohan is conscripted into the British army to fight in the Korean War. The Directors’ Fortnight title premieres Tuesday and Le Pacte handles sales. Did you keep diaries in the period the film depicts? I’ve kept journals since I was 16. I was able to go back and read what I had written at the time. How did you cast for the role of Bill Rohan? I interviewed probably 40 or 50 boys around the age of 18 to 20. I found that Callum Turner had a wonderful quality, a certain way of looking at the world that corresponded perhaps to mine. He was very much an observer; this notion of sitting on the fence, being uncommitted, which I was — he had all those qualities. That’s why I chose him. There’s that dissolve from the boy in Hope And Glory to the boy in Queen And Country. Callum looked very much like that boy would look when he grew up. Was National Service as grim as you portray it here? It was much grimmer than I portrayed it. National Service was a sausage machine. They were turning out these conscripts,

thousands and thousands of them. At that time, Britain had bases all over the world. They had to be manned. How do you look back on the early 1950s now? It was the hangover from the war. There was still rationing at that time. There were stirrings. It was a period when change was about to happen. The 1960s were a way off, when things got brighter. We all believed that atomic war was inevitable. There was a feeling we were heading toward Armageddon. Would you like to make further autobiographical films? There is perhaps one more I would like to do but I’m getting too old! It’s quite a feat to make a film at 80 and it is probably time for me to toast my feet in front of the fire. Mr. Turner Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Fictionalised art-historical biography has been one of the most fraught sub-genres in cinema. For all their virtues, films such as The Agony And The Ecstasy (Carol Reed on Michelangelo) and Lust For Life (Vincente Minnelli on Van Gogh) have demonstrated the pitfalls of trying to peer closely into the working lives of great artists, and the dangers both of hagiography and of presumptuous psychologising. In his portrait of the visionary British painter JMW Turner, Mike Leigh not only elegantly avoids these perils, but offers a film as successful in its tiny details as it is in its epic amplitude: Mr. Turner works at once as a warts-and-all portrait of the painter and his circle, and as a large-scale evocation of Victorian England. The film brings its period so energetically alive that the viewer comes to inhabit Turner’s age as intimately as we have inhabited the everyday Britain of Leigh’s contemporary films. Built around Timothy Spall’s superb lead — but democratically highlighting many performances among its sprawling cast — Mr. Turner is hugely entertaining, deeply moving and will be especially tickling for anyone with a taste for sometimes grandiloquent, sometimes juicily profane period language. An eminently marketable tour de force that promises to expand Leigh’s faithful international following, Mr. Turner shows one old master saluting another with irreverent brio.

Building on the achievements of his previous 19th-century venture, Topsy Turvy, Leigh and his team offer another detailed picture of the English past — with credit due to production designer Suzie Davies, costume designer Jacqueline Durran and researcher Jacqueline Riding. Structured fragmentarily, the film covers the last 25 years of Turner’s life, shown as a solitary, cantankerous figure devoted to his art — sometimes tender, sometimes harsh or neglectful of his intimates, sometimes (we feel) deeply knowable, but at others seemingly opaque. After a prelude showing Turner painting in Holland, the film skates from episode to episode. He comes home to London where he is greeted by his father, a retired barber (Jesson), with whom he has a gruff but tender rapport (they call each other ‘Billy’ and ‘Daddy’), and his housekeeper, Hannah Danby (Atkinson), who loves Turner and is sometimes his partner in brusque sex, but who is generally treated by him as a menial; in fact, much of the film’s emotional power comes from the sorrows of this mistreated and psoriasis-afflicted woman. Other key figures include Mary Somerville (Manville), who joins Turner for an experiment in light and magnetism; marginalised and embittered painter Benjamin Robert Haydon (Savage); and Sophia Booth (Bailey), in whose Margate boarding house Turner takes a room, and whom he later starts courting in a scene that is all the more tender for its taciturn delicacy. Many Leigh veterans give their best — among them Manville,
Savage, Ruth Sheen (as Turner’s spurned mistress) and Peter Wight, as a man of industry. But the film also offers some revelatory performances from less familiar names such as Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson and Marion Bailey, whose characters are as richly limned as any in the Leigh catalogue. And there is a very droll scene depicting eminent penseur John Ruskin (McGuire) as a garrulous, grandstanding fop — seemingly Leigh’s barb at his own critics, even the adulatory ones. The film is as keenly focused both on fine detail and on the overall quotidian grubbiness of Victorian Britain, as well as the splendour; cinematographer Dick Pope evokes this world’s textures as tellingly as he did in Leigh’s other period pieces Topsy Turvy and Vera Drake. Overall, though, Mr. Turner is up there with cinema’s finest art-biography evocations — the likes of Peter Watkins’ Munch and Paul Cox’s Vincent And Theo. It’s an ensemble film par excellence, but Spall makes a magnificent focal point, as a deeply eccentric, proudly individual man, huffing and grunting like a turkey, sometimes expressing deep pain, and cheerfully flaunting his knowledge of the classics — a man suffused with the proverbial lust for life. Moving, scholarly and serious as it is, Mr. Turner may be the most entertaining art biopic yet made — a grand canvas of inexhaustible riches.

Timbuktu Reviewed by Dan Fainaru At a time when the entire world is shocked by the appalling acts of the militant Boko Haram group in Nigeria, Abderrahmane Sissako’s film quietly but forcefully suggests the new scourge of Africa seems to no longer be colonialism, but the bloody terror inflicted on its innocent habitants by Muslim extremists all over the continent. After featuring several times in Un Certain Regard, having served on more than one Cannes jury and shining in an out-of-competition slot with Bamako (2006), Sissako finally lands — deservedly — in the festival’s main Competition with a film whose uncanny timeliness will not be lost on its audiences and might easily find itself with an award. The screenplay is based on an incident that took place a couple of years ago in a small city in the north of Mali. In 2012, during the brief spell they ruled the region, Islamic Jihadists executed a couple for living together and bringing up their children without having been properly married. Working from this basic premise, the script draws a firm line between the simple, pious but reverential faith of the locals and the brutal, inhuman conduct of the invaders, who claim, though they are neither saintly nor really observant, to perpetrate their horrors in the name of God. Brandishing guns, driving madly through the desert into peaceful villages and espousing the rules of Sharia, they tell their unsuspecting victims — who do not quite understand what is happening to them — that music is forbidden; walking in the streets means loitering; women with face, hands or feet uncovered are sinful and all transgressions of the law are punishable either by lashes administered in public places or by actual stoning. Those that are condemned are buried up to their neck in the sand, with executioners flinging stones at them until they die. Though the plot revolves around a couple,

Kidane (Ahmed) and Satima (Kiki), who live peacefully on a dune outside town until a nearby fisherman kills one of their cows, Sissako draws a larger and more elaborate network of details. These offer a composite picture of innocence trampled over by a fundamentalist craze that has less to do with religion or faith and much more with the thirst for unlimited power — with religion used as an excuse to crush any kind of insubordination. Calm, controlled and confidently displaying his visual language, the backdrop of Sissako’s film paints on the one hand a powerfully wellbalanced picture of an almost animistic indigenous society — though officially their religion is Islam — with glimpses of the Western world breaking through every once in a while, for instance in a lively argument about the respective qualities of football superstars Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi. On the other hand, the intruders do not speak the language of the local tribes — communication difficulties are underlined throughout — and are alien to their simple traditions and way
of life. Still, the extremists are empowered by the might of their rifles and belief they have the right to arbitrarily enforce their own rules and punish anyone who does not submit to them. After all the orgiastic brutalities Hollywood indulges in to show humanity’s mean streak, Sissako’s precise, economic style looks almost monastic. Unsurprisingly this achieves a far more powerful result, whether it is an amazing long shot ending the encounter between Kidane and the fisherman, the scene of a woman cruelly whipped for having dared to sing or a couple stoned to death for sharing the same room after dark. The casting works perfectly, both for the professionals — mostly playing Jihadists — and amateurs, while the camerawork of Sofian El Fani (who shot Blue Is The Warmest Colour) confirms this talented cinematographer is equally gifted handling intimate portraits or large landscapes.

Girlhood By Lee Marshall Continuing her exploration of adolescent girl support system and the insidious pressure on young women to conform to type, Céline Sciamma’s third film has all the quiet determination and punchy lifeforce of its magnetic 16-year-old heroine, a girl from the high-rise, low-income ‘projects’ on the periphery of Paris. Viewers familiar with the director’s debut Water Lilies and follow-up Tomboy will recognise some of the themes that recur and combine here, from girls who play against gender conformity to the way an age of infinite dreams can also be an age of extremely limited choices. But if Sciamma forfeits some of the delicacy of touch that we have so far associated with her oeuvre, she replaces it with a new sense of confidence and attitude in Girlhood (Bande De Filles), an in-your-face brashness that derives partly from the director’s non-judgmental depiction of a black girl-gang, partly from the film’s good-looking, high-energy weave of sound and image. The opening sequence is an eloquent, exhilarating taster of what’s to come. We see two padded-out, pumped-up American football teams take the field; they’re all girls, we soon realise, and all black. Scored by a driving rock track, the game is like a joyous promotional video for young female empowerment; but as

they walk home afterwards, the endorphinfuelled chatter dies down as the teammates approach a group of local lads. Soon we are left following Mariame, played with instinctive naturalism by first-timer Karidja Touré, who at times resembles Jennifer Lawrence — not least because of her ability to radiate reserve, sex appeal and strength in one bundle. She lives at home with her younger sisters and boorish, violent older brother, her mother out at work most of the day. Shunned at first by love interest Ismael because he is her brother’s best friend, and told by a high-school careers officer that having
flunked her year, again, the only opening is vocational training, the angry Mariame — who wants to continue her studies — is soon adopted by a brash girl gang led by the formidable Lady (Sylla). In all these roles, the casting is spot on and the energy the director coaxes from her young charges lights up the screen. The ability to reconcile sensuousness with gender politics has always been a strength of Sciamma’s work, and here the camera lingers on the skin, the hair, the hands, the eyes, the dance moves of Mariame and her girlfriends, contrasting their confident beauty and sexuality with the boxy drabness of their home environment.
Using a camera each, the duo frequently change framing and colour grading within a scene to muddle perspective, and throughout there are conversations and confrontations that, for better or worse, have all the ragged edges of improvisation rather than a formal script. When we first meet rapper Oussmane (Azu) in Paris, he has signed a contract for his debut album. He feels confident enough to convince stewardess Laure (Lalande) that she should not abort the child that is the result of their onenight stand. A move to Laure’s family home in Perpignan is the start of a seemingly doomed attempt to build a future together. Against his
better judgment, Oussmane is encouraged to visit the seaside, where he is suddenly afflicted by deafness. Further complications arrive in the shape of Laure’s older sister, Kahina (Maha), a prisoner on a short release to visit her young son. There are some charming and tender scenes in FLA, but the dominant themes are the feelings of anger, vulnerability and guilt that have come to define and motivate the central characters. There are complex connections and parallels that emerge over the film of the bonds and rivalries between siblings, the impossible hopes invested in the next generation, the irresponsibility of the artist and the sense of betrayal that can destroy a relationship in a heartbeat. The reliance on improvisation does create some rambling, argumentative stand-offs that begin to grate, and there is a sense in which the film starts to tread water after the second hour — before redeeming itself with a plaintive sequence in Haiti. Perhaps it never quite justifies its running time in the way that Blue Is The Warmest Colour did, but there is enough raw emotion and film-making virtuosity to command your attention and confirm the promise of Carrénard’s 2011 award-winning debut feature, Donoma.
Faire: L’Amour Reviewed by Allan Hunter Billed as “a film by Djinn and Salomé”, Faire: L’Amour (or FLA) delivers an almost forensic exploration of the flaws and failings in a trio of characters desperately seeking an elusive happiness. Told in a style that echoes past masters of the nouvelle vague from Jacques Rivette to Agnes Varda, it offers a gruelling but compelling emotional workout on a par with a session of John Cassavetes improvisation or an Edward Albee play. The marathon running time and sometimes unsympathetic characters will limit the film’s commercial appeal, but it should attract healthy festival interest and support from Francophile audiences and those with a track record of supporting audacious rising talents. Abandoned after three days of filming in April 2012, FLA resumed shooting in December of that year and bears no obvious signs of its fractured history. Director Djinn Carrénard and ‘artistic director’ Salomé Blechmans maintain a consistent artistic vision throughout with restless camerawork that drifts in and out of focus, floating and scrutinising like a fighter sizing up an opponent.

Buzz titles China & Hong Kong Chinese productions are booming at the local box office and several upcoming projects could be poised for big international success as well. Liz Shackleton reports
T
he box office in China grew by 29% to reach $1.1bn (RMB6.79bn) in the first quarter of 2014, driven by local hits such as The Monkey King ($168m), From Vegas To Macau ($85m) and Beijing Love Story ($65m). Foreign films had to contend with a 37.5% share of the box office, with The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug as the top-grossing import on $74.6m. With such a huge domestic market, producers in mainland China don’t need to worry about the international market, but many are concerned that overseas sales of mainland Chinese films declined in 2013. Meanwhile, Hong Kong producers, aware of the limitations of Hong Kong’s $210m annual box office, continue to keep both the mainland and international markets in mind. Everyone struggles to find content that can please both mainland audiences and the West. But at least three upcoming films could reverse this trend: John Woo’s two-part romantic epic The Crossing, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Sino-French coproduction Wolf Totem and Zhang Yimou’s Cultural Revolution-set drama Coming Home, which is playing out of competition here in Cannes. All eyes are also on Jiang Wen’s Gone With The Bullets, the sequel to his witty but relatively local Let The Bullets Fly, to see if the film can play outside China. Sony is co-producing and has international rights. Meanwhile the recent success of Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice should encourage the producers of Chinese arthouse films, who in recent years have struggled to make a dent in the local box office or clock up sales overseas. The Berlin Golden Bear winner grossed a healthy $17m in mainland China and has also sold widely for Fortissimo Films. Here are some of the hottest titles from China and Hong Kong that will be heating up the Cannes Mars ché. ■

ulf Film has established its position as the dominant force in film distribution and exhibition in the Gulf and Middle East, releasing 50% of the region’s 300 English-language movies each year as well as Bollywood and Arabic movies. Maintaining this volume means the Cannes Marché remains the most important business event of the year for the outfit. Selim El Azar, CEO of Gulf Film, says: “Cannes is the biggest and best market to acquire films. At the same time, it’s the place to meet companies and producers, and check the marketing plans and release schedules of all the films coming throughout the year.” The fast-expanding company, based in Dubai and owned by Qatar Media Services, acquires product from Hollywood studios, major US indies such as Relativity, Hyde Park and Voltage, and also works closely with European outfits including EuropaCorp and StudioCanal. Gulf has secured deals with EuropaCorp for Cannes Competition titles The Homesman, directed by Tommy Lee Jones, and Betrand Bonello’s biopic Saint Laurent. With companies including Relativity and EuropaCorp, Gulf accesses films through output deals. With others such as Voltage, QED and Hyde Park, Gulf has a long-standing relationship. Gulf ’s taste for films tends toward bigbudget mainstream fare. Most of these will be acquired at pre-production stage. “Rarely do we have the chance to screen a film and then acquire it. Having said that, there are still definitely gems and small films that do break out,” El Azar reflects. If there is the equivalent to a Slumdog Millionaire, the company will not hesitate to snap it up. Earlier this month, a new eight-screen cinema was opened by Gulf in Abu Dhabi. Very shortly a new 10-screen multiplex will open in Qatar that will include an IMAX theatre. New cinemas are also planned for Bahrain and Dubai. Gulf ’s screen count this spring stood at 101 but that is expected to have doubled by the end of 2015. The screens are 100% digital, although Gulf keeps a few projectors for showing old-fashioned film if the need should arise. Business is booming — for the first quarter of the year, Gulf ’s release of Non-Stop is the highest grossing theatrical release of the year at $7.35m after 11 weeks — also marking the Middle East’s highest grossing independent release ever. There are not yet in-depth studies of cinema-going demographics across the region. However, by assessing which films reach the biggest audiences, Gulf can identify the type of film-goers it is attracting. Disney’s Frozen was a huge hit, which underlines the strength of the family audience. Action movies also register strongly, as evidenced by the success of Non-Stop.

“It is the natural move for us to take,” says El Azar. “We believe that we should take it but we should do it properly — choose the right product, the right budget, the right partner. We will definitely do it.” The Gulf Film CEO cannot put a precise date on when Gulf will begin to produce; it is a case of waiting for the best moment. The company, which is already active across the entire Middle East territory including the GCC, Lebanon and Egypt, will

Martin Scorsese’s expletive-filled The Wolf Of Wall Street was shown across the region, and 50 Shades Of Grey has also been acquired — although it is yet to be decided in what form the film will be released. Gulf Film sub-distributes Paramount and Universal titles for Four Star Films in the Gulf territories. Censorship remains an issue. Each country has different rules and different approaches to what is allowed. “Each movie has to pass through censorship and each country has different rules,” El Azar explains. “It is rare a movie is banned in the territory but they require a few cuts to make them acceptable by the community.” Big stars are regular visitors to festivals in the region. But they rarely turn up to support the opening of new movies. “The market, although we have seen growth year after year, is still not big enough to be on the map of talent visits,” El Azar says. “I believe within a few years it will be.” Even without the talent to support new releases, Gulf is opening films day-and-date with the US. Some titles will go out on more than 100 screens. With its own Facebook and Twitter accounts, Gulf Film is increasingly active in using social media to market its wares. Nonetheless, VoD remains in its infancy and has not yet compensated for the shrinking of the home-video market. With a library of more than 2,000 features, Gulf is well placed to take advantage of the expected surge in online distribution. Piracy is continuing, but diminishing. “The only way to combat piracy is to shorten the windows of each [stage] and exploit them at the right time,” El Azar suggests. He argues it is crucial to offer high-quality, affordable versions of films at the same time pirated products are being sold. As he prepares for back-to-back meetings in Cannes (eight or nine a day not including lunch and dinner meetings) and evenings spent reading scripts, El Azar is expecting an exhausting festival. In spite of his schedule, the Gulf Film CEO makes it clear he is always on the lookout for new acquisition opportunities. “I am reachable all the time in s Cannes,” he adds. n

Poland rising The film industry in Poland is going from strength to strength, thanks to its strong infrastructure, healthy pot of funding and increasingly international outlook, as Martin Blaney reports

p until 10 years ago, Polish cinema’s hall of fame consisted primarily of Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi, Agnieszka Holland and the late Krzysztof Kieslowski. But since 2005, when the new Cinematography Act led to the setting up of the Polish Film Institute (PISF), the list of high-profile Polish film-makers has been growing longer, with film-makers such as Jan Komasa, Malgorzata Szumowska and Pawel Pawlikowski making waves on the international scene. “It brought revolutionary changes,” recalls Stefan Laudyn, director of Warsaw Film Festival says of the new organisation, which launched with an overall budget of $34.8m (¤25m). “There was an especially significant budget for films and transparency in the procedure for awarding the funding.”

In 2014, PISF’s overall budget is $43.2m (¤31m), with $29.2m (¤21m) dedicated to production funding, and the rest going towards film education and dissemination of film culture, cinema infrastructure and the promotion of Polish cinema abroad. Production support comes in the form of soft loans, with the maximum amount that can be awarded for European co-productions being $663,000 (¤476,000) for European produced and directed projects and $497,000 (¤357,000) for non-European projects. Larger amounts are also available for projects with Polish directors. Minority co-productions receiving PISF support require that at least 80% of the spend is in Poland — although they don’t actually have to shoot there — as well as minimum artistic contribution. Ari Folman’s The Congress, for example, employed Polish DoP Michal Englert, while its animation was done at Orange Studio in Bielsko Biala. “Funding-wise, Poland is really healthy now,” says producer Ewa Puszczynska of the Lodz-based company Opus Film, which coproduced The Congress and Pawlikowski’s Ida. “Before the Film Institute was set up, I used to go to co-production markets and show interest in a project, but people would ask, ‘What can this girl bring to the film from Poland?’ Poland is now seen by the international industry as an equal partner,” Puszczynska adds.

Last year, PISF backed a slew of films by Polish film-makers, structured as international co-productions, including Slawomir Fabicki’s Bonobo Jingo, produced by Opus Film with German and Norwegian partners, and Marcin Wrona’s Demon, produced through his company Magnet Man Film with co-producers from France, Israel and the UK. In addition, producer Mariusz Wlodarski of Lava Films succeeded in accessing PISF backing for Swedish film-maker Magnus von Horn’s feature debut The Here After, which is now shooting in Sweden and Poland with Swedish and French partners. Meanwhile, Andrzej Jakimowski’s ZAiR received co-financing from PISF for Serbian director Srdjan Dragojevic’s The Porcupine, which will do its post-production and music work in Poland. looking outwards As Robert Balinski of PISF’s International Relations department says, the national funder “is supporting many initiatives aimed at making our industry more international”. This includes the Polish Days initiative during New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw, CentEast Market during Warsaw Film Festival and Dragon Forum in Krakow. Outside Poland, PISF has partnered with Film Bazaar in Goa and Cinekid for Professionals in Amsterdam, while Meetings on the Bridge in Istanbul saw a delegation of Polish producers meeting their Turkish counterparts to discuss co-productions. PISF will become a partner of the Connecting Cottbus East-West co-production market this November, while during Cannes, PISF and the Danish Film Institute are organising a Poland-Denmark producers meeting on Sunday, when 10 producers from each country will have one-on-one meetings. “This is in response to the very good coproduction experience on Ida and The Word by Anna Kazejak, which were both with Danish minority participation,” says Balinski. Regional production funds are also beginning to pop up in various parts of Poland: from Gdynia and Gdansk in the north to Wroclaw, Krakow and Lodz further south. And another two are planned in Bialystok and the region of Kujawsko-Pomorskie where the capital, Bydgoszcz, hosts the Camerimage festival. “The amounts vary from fund to fund,” Puszczynska says. “Some regional funds come onboard as co-producers like the Silesian Film Fund [as was the case for The Congress] and some funds are part of film commissions like in Lodz, where they give you a grant.” Tomasz Dabrowski, head of Film Commission Poland, points out that “the biggest problem the Polish industry suffers right »

... continued from previous page now is the lack of [international] knowledge about the possibilities offered by Polish companies, film-makers and regions. “The film infrastructure in Poland is one of the best developed audiovisual service markets in Europe,” he adds, thanks to, “the rich tradition of Polish cinema, the consistent post-war investment in the film industry and the highly qualified personnel in the audiovisual sector”. Poland is home to three large studio complexes: Warsaw’s state-owned WFDiF, ATM Group complex in Wroclaw and the state-ofthe-art Alvernia Studios, which co-produced Amy Heckerling’s Vamps and Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage. As well as highly specialised service companies, a number of young producers have started to create tailor-made services for specific co-production territories. No Sugar Films, for example, has experience of working with Norwegian producers on Maria Lloyd’s animated dance film Salt and Leiv Igor Devold’s Warsaw, while Pokromski Studio worked with German company Schlicht Und Ergreifend Film on Johannes Schmid’s Winter’s Daughter. Production services company Film Polska Productions (FPP), meanwhile, has been a pioneer in working with India, having handled the shoots of 40 commercials and two feature films in Poland since 2010. Most recently, FPP’s CEO Krzysztof Solek beat competition from other European cities to bring Sajid Nadiadwala’s action film Kick, starring Indian megastar Salman Khan, to Warsaw in April for some of the most demanding action scenes to have been filmed so far in Poland. Tomasz Wasilewski
Mikolaj Pokromski Producer A graduate in marketing and business studies, Pokromski attended the GermanFrench Masterclass programme at Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris from 2004-05. He joined his parents’ company Pokromski Studio, producing docs by Michal Marczak (At The Edge Of Russia and Fuck For Forest) and Kamil Krol (I Love A Hooligan). Pokromski has since expanded into features, serving as the Polish co-producer on Johannes Schmid’s Winter’s Daughter, which won the German Film Award for best children’s film in 2012. Selected as Poland’s representative for the European Film Promotion’s Producers on the Move in Cannes this year, he will be a minority co-producer on Marie Noelle’s biopic Marie Curie with Germany’s P’Artisan Filmproduktion and France’s Sépia Production. He is also developing a Poland-Germany comedy by Andrzej Kotkowski (The Cow) and documentaries by Maciej Bochniak (Ethiopiques) and Maciej Cuske (Whale From Lorino).

Kuba Czekaj Director A graduate in directing from the radio and television department of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing, Czekaj’s short films have played at numerous festivals and won several awards, including Vancouver’s special jury award for Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Room and the award of excellence at the Los Angeles Movie Awards in 2012 for Twist & Blood. He is currently preparing his feature debut The Erlprince, inspired by Goethe’s poem Erlkönig, and to be produced by Munk Studio — Polish Filmmakers Association. Describing The Erlprince as “a fictional tale suspended between reality and the imagination of a 13-year-old boy”, Czekaj says his film “will combine various cinema conventions characteristic of thrillers, adventure films and science-fiction movies. Her first project was Kasia Roslaniec’s Baby Blues, which had its world premiere at Toronto in 2012 and international premiere in the Berlinale’s Generation section in 2013, where it won the Crystal Bear for best film. Kurzydlo also produced Malgorzata Szumowska’s Teddy Award-winning In The Name Of, which premiered in Competition at Berlin the same year. She is now producing two feature directorial debuts: Red Spider by one of Poland’s best documentary directors and DoP, Marcin Koszalka, and Grzegorz Jaroszuk’s Kebab & Horoscope. Mariusz Wlodarski Producer Wlodarski studied film production at the National Film School in Lodz, where he met Swedish film-maker Magnus von Horn, now a regular collaborator. Wlodarski worked at Opus Film (the company behind Ari Folman’s The Congress and Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida) and on international co-productions including Simon Konianski, produced by Belgium’s Versus Production, and The Flying Machine, produced by the UK’s Breakthru Films, before setting up production company Lava Films in 2010. Wlodarski produced von Horn’s Without Snow for Lava Films, going on to participate in the EAVE producers programme in 2011 with von Horn’s feature debut The Here After, which began shooting this March in Sweden as a co-production with Zentropa International Sweden and France’s Cinéma Defacto. Star power Poland’s hottest actors have caught the attention of critics and audiences. Profiles by Martin Blaney Jakub Gierszal Dubbed the ‘Polish James Dean’, the dashing Gierszal made his screen acting debut in Jacek Borcuch’s All That I Love, which played at Sundance in 2010 and was Poland’s Oscar entry in 2011, and followed it with a supporting role in Andrzej Kondratiuk’s One Million. Gierszal’s first lead came with the role of the internet addict Dominik in Jan Komasa’s Suicide Room, premiering in the Berlinale’s Panorama Special in 2011. Gierszal was also picked as one of 10 European Shooting Stars at the 2012 Berlinale. He has since played the title role in Piotr Mularuk’s Yuma and starred in Jacek Borcuch’s Lasting opposite Angela Molina and Juan Jose Ballesta, as well as Maria von Heland’s TV movie Das Kind Mit Den Drei Goldenen Haaren, and Frauke Finsterwalder’s dark satire Finsterworld, which was nominated for five German Film Awards this year. Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in 2012 for his performance in Leszek David’s You Are God as one of the members of hiphop band Paktofonika, together with fellow PWST students Tomasz Schuchardt and Marcin Kowalczyk. His most memorable and physically challenging role to date — which involved months of preparation — was as a young man suffering from cerebral palsy in Maciej Pieprzyca’s Life Feels Good. Reminiscent of Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance in My Left Foot, Ogrodnik was praised by Hollywood-based DoP Slawomir Idziak, who suggested that had it been a US film, the young Pole would have been nominated for an Oscar.
