AFM sparks business but buyers gulf widens

Russo talks up actioner Mosul Filmmaking duo the Russo brothers are juggling The Avengers with ‘The Avengers of Mosul’.

Anthony Russo came out to Santa Monica yesterday to talk up Mosul from the brothers’ production outfit AGBO. The feature, which Endeavor Content has been introducing to buyers here with an action-packed promo, is a “healthy budget” Arabic-language war movie featuring a local cast.

World War Z screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote and directed the film, which shot under-the-radar in Morocco this year. Based on Luke Mogelson’s ‘The Avengers of Mosul’ series in The New Yorker, it is the story of an elite local police unit that fought to liberate Iraq’s second largest city from Isis.

Endeavor reports it “has the option” to close deals here during the market, but that there is some buyer caution around the film being in the Arabic language, which will mean a subtitled release in most major territories. Speaking to Screen, producer Russo said he believes the language factor will make the film stand out. “You’ve never seen an Arab story told with this level of scale, in the local language,” he said.

Key to the film’s prospects will be Middle East markets, Russo believes. “I don’t think those markets have ever seen a movie like this — a war film, about them, where they’re not the villains, executed at this level,” said Russo.

Russo says the team consulted with partners in the region to make sure the subject matter was handled in a sensitive manner.

After a generally upbeat start to AFM 2018 with deals poised to break out on the market’s most high-profile packages, the widening gulf between the haves and the have-nots remains a talking point.

AGC Studios’ dark comedy Breaking News In Yuba Country, Voltage Pictures’ Jessica Chastain action thriller Eve — both involving director Tate Taylor — Mister Smith’s Hilary Swank sci-fi I Am Mother, and Endeavor Content’s Monkey Man, the directorial debut of Dev Patel, are all sparking business.

FilmNation and CAA’s George Miller package Three Thousand

Years Of Longing, which at time of writing had reportedly triggered a couple of unconfirmed European deals, and Participant Media’s drama Dry Run through Lionsgate International were proving popular.

A deal was also understood to be close on the grey-dollar cheerleader comedy Poms starring Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver and Pam Grier.

Patel turned up in Santa Monica to promote Monkey Man while Tate Taylor and Ron Howard also made appearances, the latter talking up his Luciano Pavarotti documentary that HanWay Films has reportedly licensed in at least two major territories.

Elsewhere familiar concerns persist about survival strategies in today’s landscape. Those in the crosshairs include sales agents who do not generate their own content and lack the wherewithal to manage budgets and provide realistic sales estimates, and buyers who cannot afford big-ticket items. Studios and well-capitalised independents can pick and choose whether their purchases launch in theatres or on OTT platforms. Not everybody has the network to do this, however, and the retreat of Netflix and Amazon Studios from the acquisitions arena is making it harder for financiers to recoup on mid-range content.

Tulisa acts Diva in debut lead role

Tulisa Contostavlos, known for being one-third of UK hip-hop group N-Dubz and as a judge on reality TV series The X Factor, has signed up for her first lead role in a feature film.

She will play Sista C in Diva, the story of a pop sensation whose sister is murdered in a brutal gangland killing in London. She must put her fame to one side and leave her home in Los Angeles to try to uncover the truth.

The project comes from UK finance, production and sales outfit Evolutionary Films, which is funding the production and will handle sales. Producers are Evolutionary’s Diane Shorthouse, with the company’s CEO John Adams directing. Shooting is due to commence in 2019.

Contostavlos’s credits include horror film Demons Never Die and crime film Big Fat Gypsy Gangster.

For Diva, she will also record new music for the film’s soundtrack.

Tell It To The Bees flies for Film Constellation Annabel Jankel’s romance Tell It To The Bees has continued to score AFM deals for Film Constellation.

The film has now gone to Germany (Capelight Entertainment), Spain (Filmax), South Korea (World Cinema Co), Taiwan (Cai Chang) and

airlines (Captive). They join the recent US deal with Good Deed Entertainment.

Tell It To The Bees stars Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger in the story of a lesbian romance in 1950s Britain between a single mother and

a doctor. Producers on the project are Daisy Allsop, Nick Hill, Jankel, Nik Bower and Laure Vaysse.

Saban takes Sharon Tate thriller for US

Saban Films announced at AFM it has picked up US rights from Voltage Pictures to true-crime psychological thriller The Haunting Of Sharon Tate starring Hilary Duff. Jonathan Bennett and Lydia Hearst also star in the film, which follows the pregnant actress Sharon Tate (Duff ) as she is

plagued by visions of death in the weeks leading up to her murder at the hands of the Manson Family in 1969.

Daniel Farrands wrote, directed and produced the film. Lucas Jarach and Eric Brenner also produced through Jim Jacobsen’s Skyline Entertainment, which fully financed. “The Tate murders remain a horrify-

ing cultural fascination, even nearly 50 years after they occurred,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “Hilary is mesmerising as Sharon Tate.”

Bromiley and Jonathan Saba negotiated the deal for Saban Films with Voltage Pictures president and COO Jonathan Deckter on behalf of the filmmakers.

FilmSharks lands China deals

FilmSharks has closed key deals with Chinese buyers on its AFM slate, led by a sale on thriller Dark Buildings (Las Grietas De Jara) to Lemon Tree Media. The Argentina-Spain co-production has also gone to HBO Europe, and Caribbean Cinemas for Central America.

altasar Kormakur is beaming as he clambers around a gritty industrial complex in Reykjavik. He is enthusing about the future — the empty lot where apartments and a hotel will be built, the factory space that will become restaurants and art galleries, the rocky shoreline where a seawater pool and ferry dock will be added.

The Icelandic filmmaker is at the site of Reykjavik Studios, a longtime ambition he officially opened this year, starting with the basics — the shell of a former fertiliser factory is now an open studio with a 16-metre-high ceiling. The floor is heated by geothermal water pipes. Next to be built will be production offices, dressing and wardrobe rooms, meeting areas and the offices of RVK Studios, the production company he set up in 2013 with producer Agnes Johansen.

“The dream is that in five to 10 years a new neighbourhood is up and running,” he says. “I don’t want to go too fast, too rushed.” And other investors will need to come on for other parts of the development.

Building a creative hub Iceland has long been a filmmaking hotbed and has attracted high-profile international shoots ranging from Flags Of Our Fathers to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, thanks to an attractive 25% incentive, hearty crews and amazing landscapes. But the lack of a studio space has been an issue for decades, and various sites had been proposed.

In 2016, Kormakur purchased four buildings and 36,900 square metres of land for about $2.4m in the Gufunes neighbourhood. Kormakur chose this particular site because it is just a 15-min-

Baltasar Kormakur tells Wendy Mitchell about his ambitious new Reykjavik Studios, season two of Trapped and his next films in Hollywood and at home scouted the latter based on her graduation film from Columbia University. The writers are Kormakur, Sigurjon Kjartansson, Clive Bradley, Margret Ornolfsdottir and Holly Phillips.

The first season of the atmospheric crime drama became a ratings hit in Iceland, reminding people that linear TV still works, and also worked well abroad (Trapped garnered more than 6 million viewers in France). Kormakur notes the second season is “bigger in scope, a little bigger in budget. In some way more current, it’s a bit more about world politics.”

The second season kicks off with the attempted assassination of the minister of industry, opening in Reykjavik and then returning to the northern village of Siglufjordur, the setting of the first season, and home to Andri, the small-town cop played Olafur Darri Olafsson.

The next production to come in will be Kormakur’s upcoming studio project, which is still being finalised. He is not committing to shoot all of his future films at the studio, but “I can do it here, if it fits”, he adds, saying his Hollywood partners are happy with that “as long as it’s financially comparable”. He likes working with his favoured crews at home, while bringing in international casts who like working in Iceland. “It’s a destination that people really want to [visit].”

Kormakur, whose recent international credits include Adrift and Everest, is also planning his next Icelandic feature. Independent People, which he is co-writing with Lilja Sigurdardottir, is adapted from the acclaimed 1930s Icelandic novel, and follows a struggling farmer and his family. In what is very much a sign of the 21st-century times, Kormakur plans to s make it as both a feature and TV series. ■

Moreover, the process is very smooth and easy,” says Salma Abdalla, CEO of Autlook Filmsales, whose documentary CERN, by multi-award-winning director Nikolaus Geyrhalter, is in the top five of the most-watched films released through Walk This Way. Walk This Way has two further collections to release on the platform before the end of this year: the second part of the ‘Documentaries Around the World’ collection, which includes Jérome de Gerlache’s Heart Of Glass and Christian Tod’s Free Lunch Society, and the premium Christmas title Le Père Noël, directed by Alexandre Coffre and starring Tahar Rahim, which Kinology represents.

A new perspective on distribution While an impressive number of films are produced every year in Europe (about 1,800), only a third are ever seen outside their country of origin. The export challenges facing most European films demonstrate that the current system of international sales (‘all rights’ sales) is not suitable for all titles produced because it leaves too many of them unknown to an audience, and their respective filmmakers left to deal with false expectations.

In contrast, direct digital distribution has opened new possibilities for exploiting films in many territories simultaneously through global platforms. Moreover, the infrastructure allows for a considerable cost efficiency and optimises a film’s time to market.

The costs, such as subtitling and encoding, are also limited in comparison with the potential rewards that come from being available to a wider audience.

Relying on Under The Milky Way’s

international network, Walk This Way is entrusted by European sales agents to manage international releases of a large catalogue of films on the most prominent VoD platforms in Europe and in major international markets. In 2018, Google Play also entered into partnership with Under The Milky Way, setting up a campaign to give visibility to Walk This Way releases.

“In four years, with the help of the Creative Europe/MEDIA programme, and with all our partners involved, we

have been able to build a comprehensive and efficient distribution organisation totally dedicated to digital that is undoubtedly unique,” says Jérôme Chung, co-founder of Under The Milky Way. Walk This Way is still evolving, gathering learning and intelligence from a multidisciplinary team that includes partners in Europe such as VDM in France and ComTranslations in Spain.

There is also a robust marketing and promotion approach through targeted digital campaigns, supplemented by local and pan-European PR/marketing companies like The Film Agency, which encourages constant experimentation around the promotion of films via digital distribution channels.
