“2020 what a great year to look at all the decades and get the reflections of passed College Captains” … I mentioned to the editorial team. They will all have different angles looking at their Mazenod years but current College Captain Jack Giancono will have a unique view. Year 12’s are looking forward with uncertainty and their adaption, improvisation and optimism is inspiring. It will be interesting hearing from Jack and his year group’s take on it all.

I speak for many who want to forget talking about and analyzing this year and start looking towards the future. I undertook a survey of current secondgeneration students (sons of Old Boys) and was staggered by the results. We currently have 77 students whose father was a student with Year 8 the biggest year with 21 second gen Mazenodians.

Names like Urbani, Dobson, Earl, Pilot, Henderson and Paull leaving teachers hoping apples have fallen a long way from the tree! In all seriousness, this is the future of Mazenod and the Alumni and its speaks volumes about the College that parents are sending their sons to Mazenod as their parents before them did.

Thanks to Chris Richard Scully and all contributors for keeping the traditions and cultures of our College intact and passed on through this publication.

and icons but it was empty of children. Yet, they were present online in homes from Mt Barker in the south of the state through the metropolitan area and up to Wyndham in the north. When our boys returned from the three weeks of remote learning they were far more deliberate about the human connection they craved and valued.

Some remarked that they enjoyed a less hectic and crammed day-to-day experience while others found a new appreciation for the many opportunities and interactions they enjoy every day that were temporarily taken from them.

Individually and collectively, we can learn from this pause in our lives and use it as an opportunity to reflect and re-evaluate what is important.

Prioritising relationships, healing and wellbeing, the care of the vulnerable and the ingenuity and adaptability in responding to challenges have been front and centre in the community. Quieter times have hopefully nurtured the desire for inner peace and a renewed personal relationship with God.

HISTORICAL TIMES In my years teaching the Australian History course to Year 12 classes, I would spend a significant amount of time covering the post-Great War period and its social, economic and political impact on our young nation. A small section was devoted to the Spanish Influenza pandemic’s impact on Australian life. Here we are a century later living the experience of a pandemic and I see the parallels between Australia 1920 and Australia 2020. There is a real impact on people’s lives played out in their employment, the health of family members, the social fabric and a concern for the future. I hope, as the Mazenod community, that we have been able to provide the support and connection to those in need, positioning our young men to be people of hope, faith and action.

Following the State government announcement in late March to close boarding facilities and then all schools, our College passed into an eerie phase where our students were no longer with us side-by-side in campus learning. The College appeared the same set of buildings, playing fields

Most recently, we have reflected as a staff as to how far we have travelled in our adoption of technology and strategies to maintain quality learning and pastoral care for our students in social isolation. Our staff have been remarkable and ever-prepared to navigate the education changes that were presenting as COVID-19 restrictions took hold. Equally, our students demonstrated versatility and the desire to maintain their learning and support of one another as they moved into a phase of remote learning from home. Of course, what we have undergone so far could not have been tackled without the resolute and unwavering support of our Mazenod families. Our parents buoyed the spirits of staff with their messages of support and gratitude throughout this remote learning experience.

This edition of the Mazenodian is surely one that will feature in our archives for future generations to read and engage with the lives of the Mazenod community living through this unique period. I do not have many of the answers to the wideranging questions that this pandemic has forced us to contemplate but I know we will sincerely ask what will we learn from COVID-19. What will be the ‘new normal’? I do know a recommitment to the transformative power of education and the importance of quality human connection should be front and centre. I hope we see many fine young people continuing to step forward to impact positively on communities much like the young and passionate Eugene De Mazenod in his response to God’s call to transform the lives of those impacted by that monumental event- the French Revolution.

PASTORAL CARE DURING COVID-19 Pastoral care and wellbeing during remote learning offered a great challenge to our teams of pastoral carers. For many schools, pastoral care is a pursuit that often feels school-based and face-to-face.

Not to mention the significant benefits of a sense of belonging that comes from interacting with each other, including participating in house events, clubs and co-curricular activities. In short, much wellbeing comes from connections and strong relationships and bonds. We were up for the challenge though.

The remote learning did offer the opportunity for students to interact with each other and their teachers, albeit via Zoom and in an essentially academic capacity. Our pastoral care required some out of the box thinking.

Very quickly Mazenod developed clear advice for parents and students through our tailor-made reference documents: Growing Student Wellbeing At Home and Feeling and Doing Your Best At Home. The COVID-19 section of the College website offered quick access to many wellbeing providers too. The access to information, guidance and supports was easily accessible and provided clear baseline resources for families.

But what about check-ins and connection?

The COVID-19 restrictions and government advice developed so quickly it sometimes felt that as soon as we had a plan a new media release would turn everything on its head. In times like this, we felt that the best way to keep in touch was the tried and tested way. So, the Pastoral Leadership Team and Boarding Leadership Team picked up those phones and started calling! Sometimes the simplest and direct way is the best. We opened very clear lines of communication so that families wouldn’t hesitate to contact us, and we’d be able to ‘get through’ to as many families as possible every day. The College Psychologists were busy in the background organising teleconferences and checking in with students themselves too.

At the beginning of Term Two, Form resumed online, and students were finally able to gather together in their Form rooms to share the experience of daily prayer, access daily wellbeing activities, and, maybe most important of all, have a quick chat and check-in of their own with each other.

A great initiative from the Heads of Year was the online Wellbeing Centre for all students. It

gave students access to wellbeing documents and activities as well as a wealth of short physical activities.

We published wellbeing activities in the notices or newsletter. This has become a legacy too with Wellbeing Moments becoming a standing fixture in the newsletter.

There were a couple of really fun initiatives to come out of the remote learning experience. Mr Richards-Scully worked with the Year 12 Leaders to organise and record our Mazza Moment series, which contained some great wellbeing advice and activities. All the teachers agreed that it was a lovely addition to our wellbeing strategy to see the familiar faces of our Year 12s supporting their peers.

It has to be said, and probably can’t be said loud enough, that the real leaders in our students’ wellbeing during this time were each and every parent and caregiver at home guiding their sons through this challenging time. We thank you all for your feedback and open communication. Your advice and sharing guided us towards the excellent outcomes we are now able to claim around our response to COVID-19.

A FAMILY’S STORY

JOHN KEOGH (04) The earliest memory I have of anything related to Mazenod was that it existed up a big hill that had a road next to a deathly ravine. I remember being driven there on numerous occasions, because my brother Matt Keogh started going there, I was seven years old.

Another very clear memory I have was driving Fr Michael Twigg OMI and my brother up to the College, after having just picked them up from the airport.

They had just returned from an Immersion tour to Indonesia in 1998. I remember feeling like I wanted to throw up because they both stank of pollution and humidity. Funny what you remember.

I can remember that I could not wait to be at student at Mazenod. I heard so many stories from my two older brothers about the likes of Mr Payne, or Mr Bradstreet, or Mrs Byford; that it was an accountable school - but a fun one. The Gala Days that the school used to hold gave the place a sense of wonder and excitement to a young boy.

I started Year 8 in 2000 at the dawn of the new millennium. By that time my eldest brother Matt had already graduated, but Vincent was in Year 11. It was quite an exciting year, the Jubilee year for the Church and Cardinal Francis George OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, visited.

In Year 9 I remember running through a paddock in the middle of the night, dodging cows, their

excrement, rusty barbed wire and ponds of water, while trying to hide from staff in a massive came of Capture the Lantern. It was great fun, but something we probably couldn’t do now. The Gala Day was a great fundraising event for the school and the famous bottle stall was always a lot of fun – “will I win the bottle of wine, or the laundry detergent”?

As a student, I was more active in drama than any other area of College life, taking part in numerous plays and performances. I took part in mock trials, YOH Fest, Open Day and the Performing Arts Tour to the eastern states. As a Peer Support Leader, I remember being driven down to the Year 7 camp and wondering if we would survive Mr Stallard’s driving. I was a Prefect in Year 12 and will probably be remembered for having a mental blank when attempting to lead everyone in the Lord’s Prayer at the Year 12 Ball.

Sadly, we lost Rhys Kampen, one of our classmates in Year 12, but the way in which the Mazenod community came together then was inspiring.

As a student, I got along quite well with the teachers and thoroughly enjoyed Mazenod. I really enjoyed the way we got to interact with the teachers. The tug of war, Jog For Java and athletics carnivals (Go Grandin!) were always fun, where we got to see teachers in a different light. There were a few staff who were old boys and I remember thinking how cool it would be to be a teacher at Mazenod.

While studying to be a teacher I stayed involved at Mazenod and took part in the whole school productions Jesus Christ: Superstar in 2005 and The Producers in 2007.

Eventually I arrived back at Mazenod as a teacher in 2011. I believe my time at Mazenod played a big part in my decision to become a Religious Education teacher. It helped me to recognise the value of understanding my faith and the role of religion in our complex world. In that same year, my youngest brother Luke was a student in Year 8 and Fr Twigg OMI presided over the marriage of my eldest brother at the Oblate Basilica in Fremantle.

As a staff member I have been privileged to have some amazing experiences. Leading the staff band at the Sportsman’s Dinner, losing table tennis to students at a National Oblate Youth camp in Melbourne, witnessing the amazing work of the Oblates with students on the Sri Lanka and China immersions and directing students to back-to-back wins in the Christian Drama section of Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival. I have acted as Head of Religious Education and Director of Faith and Mission, stage managed two school productions, served as Co-President of the Staff Social Club and witnessed Grandin finally win the Mazenod Trophy in 2015. So, my suspicion was right, it is cool to be a teacher at Mazenod.

Since 2014, I have been a member of the Mazenod Old Boys committee. Following in the footsteps of two Mazenod stalwarts, Jeremy Logan (87) who was my Year 8 Form teacher and Year 12

coordinator and Leo Conti (82), I was elected President of the Old Boys in 2019. Both Presidents before me have done much work in developing the Old Boys and I thank them for creating our ‘strong foundations’ (College anthem reference).

Last year I spent part of my Long Service Leave touring around Europe. Continuing my Mazenod journey for part of that trip I decided to check out all things Eugene. I visited St Eugene’s birthplace in Aix-en-Provence, the cathedral where he was ordained in Amiens, his tomb in Marseilles and the General House in Rome, where some friendly Oblates were gracious enough to give me an impromptu tour. I got to see some of St Eugene’s very own personal items and an impressive view of Rome from the rooftop. This was just another example of the open and friendly nature of the Oblates, a nature that has not been lost at Mazenod.

It would be safe to say that I have a deep connection with Mazenod. The values I have learned inspired me to set an example in my life, as I believe it is important to give back to the community. I am now an Acolyte in my parish, I served on the local Catholic School Board and I am a volunteer firefighter in my local brigade. I thank the school and indeed the Oblate Fathers for their selfless attitude and inspiring me to follow their example.

Mazenod is a unique and special place. It is hard to describe, but I am sure many of you know what I am talking about. While this is my story, there are countless interesting and valuable ones like it, that all make up our amazing Mazza community. I feel blessed to be a part of it.

A FAMILY’S STORY

JACK GIANCONO CLASS OF 2020 I am currently the 2020 College Captain and completing an ATAR course of study involving, Physical Education, Human Biology, Economics, Religion, English and Maths. I am aiming to attend university to study a Sport Science and Psychology course, with the aim to become a sport psychologist.

I am heavily involved with sports at the College and out of the College, even though I am currently nursing an injury I cannot wait to get back into all the sports that have had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

Reflecting back on my years at Mazenod, one thing that I have come to value more highly is the people around me, including my mates and teachers. I have been on a few cricket tours and leadership tours with the school and the one thing that I’ve enjoyed the most is being around the boys. You may have lots of mates or a few mates, but as long as they are true friends and you enjoy being around them, it’s the best thing.

On those tours, you also learn how important your

teachers and older mentors are to you and the staff at Mazenod are top class. As I prepare to leave the school after six years, I know all my teachers will lend a helping hand if needed. As you progress through your time at Mazenod, you stop seeing your teacher as your maths or science teacher and more of a mentor and friend, it’s a beautiful thing.

If there was anything I would share and emphasize to the current students, it would be that you should try to enjoy every minute at Mazenod and get involved in everything. It’s not every day you get to be a part of such a strong and welcoming community. The quicker you start enjoying school, rather than stressing or worrying about your next test or performance, then it becomes a lot more enjoyable and your success will follow.

As I come to the end of my Mazenod journey, I am struck with the feeling that you never really know what you have until its gone, but hopefully my younger peers can realise this sooner rather than later.

JORDAN FRESHER (15) What is your current job and what does it involve?

Mazenod and share one thing that you learnt that has had an influence in your life and/or career.

I’m currently living between Perth and Los Angeles and working in Perth / Los Angeles / Japan in fashion and arts.

My career highlights include doing the Paris Fashion Week (PFW) show at Palais de Tokyo, dressing Bella Hadid for the (PFW) runway show. I have done runway collection features and articles in Vogue, GQ, Esquire and WWD. I’ve also done ComplexCon Long Beach and New York Fashion Week pop up store, plus a feature interview in Forbes magazine.

Can you reflect back at your time as a student at

While at Mazenod I learnt how important it is to challenge yourself and that it’s okay to step out of your comfort zone and try new things.

Is there something you could share with the currents students that may help them on their journey through secondary school?

Don’t let a fear of failure, fear of comparison, or a fear of judgment stop you from doing what’s going to make you great.

If there is anything else you would like to include?

I always remember having good times in Mr Allen’s art class, I also remember in workplace learning we did an online multiple-choice survey that would determine future career options for us. I got ‘Truck Driver’.

A FAMILY’S STORY

FRANS BROUWER (73) Bachelor of Engineering (Power), I moved to Victoria and worked with the State Energy Commission and its successors for 25 years, before retiring in 2013. I am married to Caterina and I have a son, Luke. Incidentally, Luke is the Young Vinnies Oceania representative. He has met a couple of Mazenod Old Boys during his Vinnies work, including Patrick Wallis (13).

Over the past few years I have discovered a passion for sports administration. I have been Secretary for the South Warrandyte Hawks Cricket Club, in the Ringwood District Cricket Association for the past eight years. No test or shield caps yet, but Luke did play with future Western Bulldogs premiership player Shane Biggs, who was a genuine all-rounder.

I have also served as Assistant Secretary (eight seasons) and Team Manager (10 seasons) and hopefully 2020, for the Aquinas Old Collegians Football Club, in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). In 2010, I was scratching around for water carriers for an U19 away game and a player suggested asking his mate who was watching, who was happy to lend a hand. His mate was Liam Shiels who has since gone on to become a triple premiership player at Hawthorn.

If I could reflect on my career choice for current Mazenod students, I would say that sometimes you might miss out on a job that your heart may be set on, or a particular career you believed you wanted all the way through school. At the time you may feel like it’s the end of the world and those idiots were clearly wrong to reject you. Perhaps that could be a blessing in disguise. I thought I wanted to be an air force pilot, but discovered my eyesight wasn’t good enough, then I applied for air force engineering, but was told that I was not suitable. Despite that, I graduated from university with a degree in engineering and went on to have a long career in the industry. The moral is, that you should consider more than one career path during secondary school and do all you can to learn about them.

I’d also suggest you try to do mathematics through to Year 12. Not always a requirement for all courses, but it is better to learn progressively rather than try to pick it up quickly at university. You will impress your colleagues if you can understand report statistics, or when you know something about forces in a multi-disciplinary team building skyscrapers. I expect that Fr Mack, Mr Viney and Mr Pringle would be surprised to hear me advocate maths!

MATT DON (04) My Name is Matthew Don, class of 2004. For work, my current role is with the Department of Health as Manager Budget Strategy Unit. My role is working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the WA health system has the necessary resources to deliver its services. This can be as little as seeking funding to upgrade IT systems, to as big as developing a business case seeking funding to build a new hospital.

Career highlights would include being the principal policy advisor to the Treasurer under the previous government, and building strong relationships and friendships with colleagues from various government agencies.

I have been with my wife for 12 years and married for seven of those years. We have two young and beautiful little girls, one is in primary school and the other yet to start. We have lived up in the hills our entire lives and are currently renting in Lesmurdie, while we build our dream home on a 16 acre block in Carmel.

Upon reflecting on my time as a student at Mazenod, I learnt the value of relationships. Whether that be friendships with people inside or outside of school, or sporting communities, your ability to build and maintain relationships is so important in all aspects of life.

My advice to current students at Mazenod is to live in the moment but keep one eye open to the future.

You’ll look back on school and realise it was probably some of the best days and memories of your life. Use school as a platform to set yourself up for a happy and successful future and use your teachers as a valuable resource to guide you in both personal and professional endeavours.

At the end of 2019 I suffered a C4 spinal cord injury, which left me a quadriplegic. I spent one month in ICU and three months in a rehabilitation unit. I’m now at home, continuing rehab and working out how to live my life. The injury has had obvious impact on my family and me, but we are taking it day by day.

I’m fortunate that I have an incredible wife and two beautiful kids, who have been my biggest support and motivation. Never take anything for granted and always make sure that the people you care about, know that you care about them. Prior to my injury, my main hobbies included bush walking with my family, mountain bike riding and building furniture.

I’m now working hard to hopefully do these things again in some capacity.

A FAMILY’S STORY

MARK THOMPSON (76) My name is Mark Thompson. I am an old boy from the Class 76. I started at Mazenod in 1972 during the second term of first Year High School, when my family moved to Kalamunda. I had been at Christian Brothers High School in Highgate from Grade 5 previously. Moving to Mazenod was a big change because back then it was really like being in the bush.

Just after finishing school, I joined the Australian Army Reserve and served for nearly nine years in the Western Australian University Regiment and the Pilbara Regiment. I have worked in the Radio Communications industry for most of my life and this saw me spend nearly 20 years in the Pilbara. I took time out to run a couple of small businesses and even became the Shire President in Norseman.

In this role I met the Governor of Western Australia, the Governor General of Australia, and even have had lunch with the Premier. All were great privileges afforded to me through my role. I remember how honoured I felt when Dr Geoff Gallop leant across the dinner table, shook my hand and called me by name.

Believe it or not, we actually had hand shaking taught to us at Mazenod, during a class called the Christian Gentleman.

These days, I am the National Service Manager for Radlink Communications. I am responsible for the implementation of systems to ensure all Radlink’s

Service Departments across the country are operating under the same business model to meet our various clients’ demands. It allows me to travel over most of the country.

Last year I was working for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in their Communications Branch. One of my most satisfying jobs at DFES was the installation of a repeater system on Eclipse Island south of Albany. Within a week this repeater was in use during a search for fishermen swept from rocks. There have been several subsequent searches where this repeater was used in similar circumstances. While those outcomes were very tragic, the safety provided by this communications equipment to the first responders of Volunteer Marine Rescue was enhanced.

My wife and I built a house in Roleystone just after the Kelmscott fires of 2011. Once that was completed, I became a volunteer firefighter. My comments to her were, “I cannot ask other people to do something I am not prepared to do myself.”

I have fought major fires in Waroona, Albany and Yanchep to name a few. I have been deployed a number of times to places such as Hyden, Albany and the Stirling Ranges to fight campaign fires. I was also sent to the eastern states last year to fight fires in Queensland.

I never saw myself as an adventurous or active person at school. Far from it, I hated sports day!

When I look at what I have written, I see that I have spent 16 years doing some pretty action-packed things, from blowing stuff up to running into burning buildings and going to some nasty car accidents, where people are experiencing the worst day of their lives. When I am not doing fire and rescue stuff, I am trying to get out into the remote areas of WA to explore the paths of the early explorers, or follow engineering feats such as the west-east telegraph line or Canning Stock Route.

In my work career I have generally been in leadership positions from a pretty young age. I never saw that in me when I was a 17 year old at Mazenod.

The one thing I have learned, is that time stops for no one. Regardless of how bad things get time continues to move on, and you just have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and carry on. I don’t think I ever really enjoyed school, but I do recognise it was extremely important as the study done at school set me up for life.

Please be patient with your life It’s only morning and you’re still to live your day Now my morning has gone, I look back and wonder where all those years disappeared. My school years helped build me into the person I am today. I probably wouldn’t change a thing and as I reflect, I hope I have made a positive difference to the people I have encountered on this journey.

Sometimes you will be faced with a decision and wonder “what is the right thing to do?” That is always easy to answer, the right thing to do is generally the hardest thing.

I remember planting trees along the old driveway at Mazenod and I think they are still there. To me it is tangible evidence that I made some small change. My son Daniel (03) and nephew also went to Mazenod, so the tradition continued.

Over years I have helped save peoples’ houses, and their animals, I have helped people in their darkest hour, I have battled to save the environment, I have married (and divorced), I have raised a son and stepchildren. Did I make a difference?

To them I did.

CHEYNE KYNOCH (06) What is your current job title and what does it involve?

I am a canine handler within the Western Australia Police. I live and work with my dual-purpose Police dog, Goose, who is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois.

Our primary role is to track, locate and engage with violent offenders, but we also have the capability to detect narcotics and large sums of cash. Our Police dogs can also be deployed to assist in locating missing persons and utilised in public order incidents.

Before joining the canine section in 2018, I worked as a General Duties (GD) Police officer for 6 years across the Perth metropolitan area. After joining Canine, I spent the first 9 months learning how to train Police dogs before I completed a four-month dual purpose canine course to deploy Goose operationally. PD Goose and I graduated the course in September 2019 and have had numerous successes since that time, locating offenders in garages, on top of roofs, hidden in bushes and up high in trees.

Any other personal news you would like to share?

I recently proposed to my girlfriend in New York and we are due to be married in April 2021 That’s great, could you highlight any career achievements.

Being selected into the Canine Section and graduating the dual-purpose dog course.

Being nominated for Police Officer of the Year – for arresting an armed offender whilst off duty, after a foot chase through the Perth CBD. Awarded the Ministers Award after graduating the Police Academy. This is an award voted on by your peers for Best Overall Recruit.

Can you reflect back at your time as a student at Mazenod and share one thing that you learnt that

TREMAINE PASS (10) What is your current job title and what does it involve?

After secondary school I studied Commerce, majoring in Finance and Marketing and after that I completed a Diploma of Financial Services. I have been a Business Development Manager for Macquarie Bank since 2015. The role involves supporting mortgage brokers across Perth and helping them deliver positive outcomes for their clients. It mainly involves providing service to brokers, helping them analyse their client’s needs, and matching suitable products to those needs. The position requires a solid understanding of mortgage credit and policy knowledge, to help develop and grow relationships with mortgage brokers and their business.

Any other personal news you would like to share?

I now live in Northbridge and in my free time I enjoy catching up with friends and family, going to the gym and playing social basketball with my Mazza mates!

Great to see the Mazza connections are still strong.

Could you highlight any career achievements?

I have two clear highlights: Getting a job at Macquarie Bank in 2015, which is a global investment bank and financial services company, and more recently getting promoted to a Business Development Manager role.

Can you reflect back at your time as a student/ at Mazenod and share one thing that you learnt that has had an influence in your life and/or career?

Opportunity and teamwork are the biggest lessons that I learnt from attending Mazenod that has stuck with me to today. Giving everything a go, whether

has had an influence in your life and/or career?

Life – Value your mates in high school as they’re likely to be the mates that help you through many challenges in life.

Career – My maths teacher, Barbara Heelan, always encouraged me to take on a challenge and not just fall back to what is easy.

Thinking about your time at Mazenod College, is there something you could share with the currents students that may help them on their journey through secondary school?

Don’t stress if you don’t know what you want to do after high school. I tried university twice, got

it’s on the footy field, or in the classroom. Mazenod provided the grounding for dealing with people, which has helped me build self-confidence to do the job I’m currently doing. Getting involved allows you to build your personable skills, learn how to work as a team to achieve a goal and most importantly overcome obstacles in order to succeed. All these factors are vital in any industry you choose to work.

Is there anything else, you would like to share with current Mazenod students?

To current students, one thing I cannot recommend enough is to get involved and give things a go, whether its sports, music, academic, or giving back in some way. You are blessed to attend a school that offers so much support and opportunity. Get out of your comfort zone, try new things and work together as a year group and a College. This will not only build your confidence at school, but also life after Mazenod.

Looking back, I truly appreciate all the opportunities Mazenod blessed me with. I look back at my years at Mazenod with so many good memories and friendships that will last forever.

I look back very fondly at my time at Mazenod College. Just make the most of it and be sure to be an active member of the Old Boys community when you leave.

MOB SUMMARY

MAZENOD OLD BOYS PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the first edition of the Mazenodian for 2020. I trust you will enjoy our unique stories and coverage in the Mazenodian this year as we celebrate 10 years as of the Mazenod Old Boys being an official association. This is my first report since being elected President of the Old Boys in October.

I would like to begin by extending my thanks to the committee and the Old Boys for their support. I look forward to working with all of you to continue to strengthen and build the “MOB”.

This edition is a unique and significant one for a myriad of reasons. It goes without saying that the Old Boys find themselves – much like the rest of the world – in a challenging situation where our events have been suspended indefinitely. This has been especially saddening since we had a number of events lined up to mark our 10 Year Anniversary as an association. Rest assured these celebrations and events will be held once we are able to. Please continue to watch this space, as these once in a decade celebration will not want to be missed especially the formal dinner!

While COVID-19 has interrupted our plans, the Old Boys were fortunate enough to conduct a few events in the first half of the year. We began one round of footy tipping and have just started to run this now the season has started again. We were also able to have our Term One BBQ for the Year 12s as a way of supporting them in their final year of Mazenod as students. Suffice to say the food goes down quickly!

Being a current teacher of the school, I have been fortunate enough to speak at a Year 12 assembly to outline what the Mazenod Old Boys is all about, how the Old Boys support students currently and how they can be a part of upcoming events in 2021. The boys showed great enthusiasm and were thankful to the Old Boys for their support. Thank you to Head of Year, Mr Michael Frank, for inviting me to speak.

Earlier in the year, the MOB conducted a logo competition to help the committee formulate ideas on a possible new design for our logo. We had over 80 entrants and were impressed with the amount of consideration that went into each design.

Congratulations to Mason Houlahan from Year 11 for his winning entry. Mason also wins a $100 cash prize.

Recently, the MOB released a survey for members to pass on feedback and their thoughts on how we as a committee and association can improve. We value all feedback so if you have not yet responded, please do: https://bit.ly/MOBSurvey Near the end of this term the school marked the inaugural Oblate Week. Created by the Oblates last year, the week will be celebrated annually by the schools and groups associated with the Oblates. It is fitting therefore that we recognise and give thanks to the Oblates for all that they do, for without their founder, Mazenod College, and in turn the Old Boys would not exist. What a thought! Their values and community spirit are definitely felt in our association.

In more sombre news, our Old Boys community was saddened to hear of the passing of Matthew Sala-Tenna (19). We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to Matthew’s family and friends.
