Congratulations to the Class of 2019 who have now joined the ranks of the Old Boys. It is always a pleasure to welcome our young Mazenod men into the association.

A big thank you to all the Old Boys who assisted in any way this year. Your contribution is always welcome, it demonstrates to the students the strength of our community and that they are a part of something that they can share for life.

If you follow the Mazenod Old Boys Facebook page you may have heard about the Matt Don (04). Matt recently had a horrible unforeseen accident whilst working on his block with his Dad. The accident has seen him end up in ICU with a shattered C4 vertebrae and severe damage to his spinal cord, a place he will remain for the next 6-12 months as he works on his recovery.

The accident will severely affect his future and his families.

The Old Boys’ community are coming together to help in any way they can. Matt’s family have also started a GoFundMe campaign to help contribute to his recover. Please consider supporting a brother in need.

At the end of this year we say goodbye to the second President of the Mazenod Old Boys, Leo Conti (82) and welcome incoming President, John Keogh (04). We thank Leo from his years of devoted service and his passion for Mazenod College. We will support John as he guides the association into the future.

The Mazenod Old Boys association continues to make a difference in our community.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome to the final edition of the Mazenodian for 2019. The school year has finished yet the opportunities for our students continue. Over December and January, Mazenod students and staff are involved in the India Immersion trip, the Oblate Cricket tournament in Melbourne, National Catholic Youth Conference in Perth and the National Oblate Youth Encounter in Melbourne. We look forward to bringing you news of these activities through our social media and newsletters early in Term One, 2020.

We often say that there is a place for every boy and young man at Mazenod College and, if he is prepared to follow his passions and strive to try new, positive experiences beyond what is known and comfortable, he will certainly learn a lot about himself. Much of this edition of the Mazenodian celebrates the Arts. Alongside an extraordinary range of artistic opportunities in the College, there are approximately 60 co-curricular activities and programs where students can pursue learning passions and step beyond their margin to try new and exciting things.

Stephen. K. Levine wrote- ‘The arts, as media of

the imagination, are disciplines which give form and substance to our capacity to be who we are.

Each artistic medium embodies the imagination in a concrete and specific way.” Long live the Arts!

Sadly, Father Peter Daly OMI passed away at the end of Term Three. In this edition, we reproduce the Homily Fr Christian Fini OMI Oblate Provincial, delivered during the Requiem Mass at the College in the first week of Term four. A most stirring and emotional moment happened as Father Daly’s hearse left the College, 900 Mazenod students, staff, families and Old Boys lined the driveway to show their respect and say goodbye. We are saddened by the loss of Fr Daly but truly grateful for his wonderful contribution to Mazenod over so many years.

Finally, thank you to our students, staff and parents for their generous involvement in the life of the College over 2019. I wish everyone a joyous Christmas and may God’s blessings be on all our families during this holy season of Christmas.

FUNERAL HOMILY

FATHER PETER DALY OMI Fr Peter Gerard Daly was born in Brisbane on 28 July 1955, to parents Don and Rita, siblings Mary, Catherine and John. Growing up in the local area of Wynnum Fr Peter was educated at Iona College, Brisbane. As one of the first generation, I am sure the school didn’t look like it does today, and the thought of a Peter Daly Precinct was far from his or anyone’s imagination.

He entered St Mary’s Seminary and moved to Victoria in 1973, taking first vows on 17 February 1974. We all know that Fr Peter had a great sense of humour, there is a legendary story that when he applied for first vows the Novice Master said “I am looking for a deeper ‘yes’ to which Peter responded “Yes”, in a deep voice. After completing his priestly studies at St Mary’s Victoria, he was ordained in Brisbane on 7 October 1979.

a lay principal. A new phase in the Oblate history of Education, he was developing a new model for Mazenod WA of Rector and Principal working together. Sadly, for all of us this was cut short.

Fr Peter was a dedicated Oblate with a unique vision and passion for education of the entire person intellectually, spiritually, physically and culturally.

It would not be an understatement to say that Fr Peter’s contribution to Mazenod College WA was a turning point in the history of the College.

Fr Peter’s life and ministry was an Oblation or gift to Oblate education in the Australian Province.

Peter’s deep faith influenced his whole life and in particular his approach to education.

Jesus was the model of a teacher for Peter.

His first year as a priest was spent at St John Vianney’s in Victoria followed by Massey, New Zealand, then he spent six years at Iona College, teaching English and Geography, and coaching cricket and football. His next obedience was five years at Mazenod College, Western Australia as Boarding Master and Religious Co-ordinator. Then 1992 was divided between Mazenod College, Victoria and Natal Province, South Africa where he conducted parish missions before he returned to Mazenod College, Lesmurdie as Rector, 1993-2001.

After Mazenod College WA he was appointed as the first old boy Rector at Iona College, until the end of 2010.

In today’s gospel, traditionally known as the Beatitudes, we discover the fulfilment of the 10 commandments. We hear that Jesus went up the mountain, where he sat down, a sign that he was about to teach… no PowerPoint, no lectern, no speakers. Teaching was and is always about relationship and communication, and Peter had these two gifts in abundance.

After 2010 he took a sabbatical during which he assisted at St John Vianney’s Parish, Victoria, and St Eugene’s Parish, Queensland, and then served as Rector, Mazenod College Lesmurdie in 2014 and 2015. From 2016 through to January 2019 he served as Provincial of the Australian Province, based in Camberwell; then following a short sabbatical he returned to Mazenod College Western Australia as Rector from April 2019, but this time working with

Jesus as the teacher used drama and rich imagery, on occasions throwing a few tables around the Temple. Peter was always good at telling stories and putting his own charm and twist to the reality, never letting truth or fact get in the way of a funny story. He had a wonderful gift of impersonating people, especially Oblates. Telling you a story that involved an Oblate he would often break out into an impersonation of him mid-story.

Jesus communicated through parables. He kept things simple, and through parables he appealed to the imagination, dealt with concrete issues and secured attention. Peter too had the gift of making things real.

Jesus used questions – who do you say I am? what do you seek?, always respecting the dignity of the other person. Peter was intelligent and would ask the challenging and appropriate questions while maintaining a passion for justice and respect for the dignity of the human person.

In all these Jesus highlights the importance for success in any relationship, whether it is teacherstudent, employer-employee, Priest-his people or husband and wife, of communication.

Jesus as a teacher taught about a lot of things: his main topic and subject matter was “LOVE”. Jesus teaches us about what it is, how to express it, and how to grow in it. Ultimately Jesus taught us what love really is through action – his Life, Death and Resurrection.

Most importantly, Peter through his Priestly ministry and the celebration of the sacraments, brought the reality of God’s love for people, through Jesus, into our presence.

We also know that the vocation of priesthood is lived out by humans who are not perfect. Peter had his challenges. In recent years Peter suffered from constant ill health that at times limited his ability to minister as effectively as he would have liked and with an illness he could not overcome.

Happy are the Gentle – Peter was not the aggressive type, he fostered the development of the entire person and avoided the jock mentality that a boys college could easily slide into.

Happy are those who mourn – Peter through his ministry comforted those who mourned.

Happy are those who hunger & thirst for what is right – Peter was a man passionate about justice and the poor.

Happy are the merciful –Peter showed compassion and mercy because he himself had experienced it.

Happy are the pure in heart – what Peter said reflected what was happening inside the heart.

Happy are the peacemakers – Peter was a man of forgiveness.

Happy are those who are persecuted in the cause of right – Peter willingly made sacrifices for others.

Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account - Peter’s life was a witness to God.

Yet Peter’s own challenges, faults and failings shaped his priesthood and ministry, his relationship with his family and friends and made him more compassionate and caring. He trusted in the God who created him in love and formed him.

As we remember Peter and our friendship with him, we hold on to the reality of God’s love which we experienced through our friendship with him. We thank Peter’s family for the gift he has been to the Australian Province and the Church. Thank you for sharing your brother with us.

Many of the attributes of love that Jesus taught about through the Beatitudes, Peter tried to live in his own life and priesthood.

Brother, you left us far too early, we the Australian Province, family and friends, thank you for the Oblation, the gift, you have been to us.

For most students, school may act as a medium for them to explore their interests, learning how to socialise, function in society and be a place to make their own mistakes, all while learning and growing academically.

“Being at Mazenod College has given me so much, especially outside the classroom,” he said.

But for Kai Lovel, education has played a significant role in the exploration of his true passion.

The Mazenod College student – the school is operated under the auspices of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate - has not only allowed Kai to be an entrepreneur, broadcaster and speaker, but also a deep aspiration to become a strong leader.

“I think the most profound effect Mazenod College has had on me comes down to life values, whether it was from the rite of passage program in Year Nine called The Rite Journey, or the expectations of respect and dignity, Mazenod has instilled in me how to be a good man, and a burning desire to want to be just that,” he said “It has not only supported the work that I do but also develops the person that I am,” he continued.”

Kai began his producing and presenting experience at his local radio station at the age of 12, which enthused him to seek various means for content creation.

He then established his first eCommerce business, The Tech Thread Co. “It only ever had six sales, but I learned so much, made some amazing connections and discovered other aspects of the business that really excited me,” Kai said.

He continued following his curiosities, creating his own podcast called Point of View, which led him to start Millennial Studios, “a social media incubator for young people with the vision of creating a platform for impactful content”.

He also co-created a peer-to-peer tutoring agency with fellow Mazenod College student, Sean Johnson, called Student Tutors United in late 2018; which translated to having owned and operated three businesses by the age of 14.

At the moment, Kai is focussing on sharing his experiences, lessons, and skills to other young people through public speaking and a soon-tolaunch digital agency that will host his digital works in website designing, advertising consultancy, and digital marketing.

“I’m also about to launch my second podcast, How to be Curious, which will be about this concept of following your curiosities, and where it can take you,” he added.

Kai mentioned that his pursuit in business, content creation and public speaking, came from joy and fulfilment he gets from courageously following his curiosities of a new concept, idea or project.

“It’s freeing, especially when you are young and the world is your playground,” he said.

“My mission to follow my curiosities, and help others to do the same, is how my journey began, and that’s what inspires me to keep going.”

In the process, Kai learned that it is important not to bite off more than he can chew, trying to maintain a self-image of being able to do everything all at once, which has previously affected his mental health and ability to study.

“My biggest challenge was re-shifting my commitments, stopping the businesses and slowing down,” he admitted.

“I realised that they had been taking me on a journey to some amazing places, people and skills, but it was time for me to find a new journey and follow my new curiosities.”

Kai has also discovered over the course of his journey, to treat his failures and setbacks as gifts and opportunities.

“My biggest lesson ties into my biggest challenge, in fact, challenges in general. Our perception of challenges and setbacks determines our experience of them,” he said.

With his immense passion in content creation and love of presenting at his local radio station, Kai said he would continue to explore digital platforms and mediums, as well as sharing his and others’ stories and perspectives to the community.

“I want to go into broadcasting, either in television or radio and follow my journalistic interests, which may be through university studies or work experience,” he continued.

Aware of the negativity surrounding his generations nowadays, Kai sent a message to other young people that making the right choice is imperative.

“Live in a way that makes you a part of the solution, not the problem; align yourself with people that strongly support you for who you are because you are the way you are for a reason,” he concluded.

STOMP @ MAZENOD It is with great excitement that Mazenod College announces its first Dance Program set to launch in 2020. Stomp is ready to burst into 2020 and is already attracting many students who want to pursue their passion in movement.

few musicals made me recognize that there is a desire to become the ultimate triple threat- singing, acting and dance,” Dan Jonkov, who was the esteemed choreographer for Little Shop of Horrors (2017) and Oliver (2019), said.

Following the success of the past three Musicals, and the overwhelming interest from the boys to be involved in the whole department projects, the Arts Department has created another wing of our already incredibly diverse subject area to now include Dance as an extracurricular program for the boys.

“Usually dance is the area that the boys struggle with the most, but since my role as Director and Choreographer in Addams Family in 2015, I have noticed how hard they work to get better and better, they just need an ongoing opportunity to build skills and confidence”.

Led by Mr Dan Jonkov, dance specialist, Drama/ Media Teacher and working industry professional, the boys will be using the new drama space - The Workshop - to build their skills, experience a range of styles of Dance and work towards several performance opportunities this year.

Since the soft launch earlier this term, the interest from the boys and their families confirmed that the Arts community at the College is incredibly strong, supported by the Senior Leadership Team and the hardworking Visual and Performing Arts Staff.

ARTS OPTIONS WITH A TWIST IN 2020 With ever-growing numbers in Art, Drama, Music and Media, the Visual and Performing Arts Department will launch into their creative and contemporary 2020 Option Programs next year.

“I wish I could have been involved in arts specialty options in the early years of high school. This is going to open up incredible opportunities,” Kofi Chow, Year 11 student.

“Following the direction from the College Leadership Team, we thought it was about time to shake up our courses and give the students something new and exciting to try next year”, Miss Beth Parkinson, Head of Arts said.

“I like to make mess in class so working with clay and using my hands to actually build something sounds like it was made for me,” – Declan Boland Year 9 student

Students from Year 8 to 10 were surveyed to discover what interested them, what they would like to try and what they were involved with outside of Mazenod College. This information could then inform what changes were made to arts options in 2020.

“I like that I can pick to study physical drama and really focus on the things I like: clowning, slapstick and stage combat. It is what I am most passionate about,” – Flynn Throssell Year 9 student.

“There is something for everyone and the courses seem a lot more flexible and really unique”- Luke Baker Year 11 student.

“Some of our courses are completely different, with some whacky new ideas that will see the creation of a ukulele troupe and upcycling urban streetwear, while others are a re-branding to show what we do in the Arts at first glance.” Miss Parkinson added.

“It’s going to be heaps of fun.”

PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARD FOR SAM Sam Markham (Year 11) has been interested in photography since his stepfather introduced him to it in when he was in Year 7. Since then, he has been pursuing it as a hobby and refers to himself a ‘selftaught photographer’.

“Neither of us knew a lot about it, so it was a lot of self-research then coming together to share what we’d learnt. It was a good experience for us to share and bond over,” Sam said.

The pair would venture to Lesmurdie Falls or take a late night visit to the city to share their love of photography. Sam explains that his interest has mainly been in long exposure photography.

“I really enjoy long exposure photography, light painting, light trails and star trails.”

At the 2019 Perth Royal Show, one of his photographs was awarded first prize in the Youth category at the 34th National Photographic Competition. 500 photos are selected from over 1500 entries.

the Best Youth Print and People’s Choice Award at the same show.

“I was pretty surprised I received an email saying that I was invited to the awards evening. I thought maybe I might receive a ‘merit’, but I was really surprised I actually got an award, let alone first place.”

“That was pretty exciting to see when I walked in and saw my photo with a big first place ribbon, that was definitely good to see. I was not expecting it at all.”

Sam has excelled in the creative arts, especially in music, but his focus recently has turned to photography, which he hopes to pursue in the future.

“My photography interests started to change. I have a passion for Formula One and I’d like to get into motor sport photography, because it blends the two things I enjoy, photography and motor sport,” Sam added.

Judging from the work he has already produced and the effort he puts into his creative pursuits, there is no doubt Sam will achieve his new goal.

CHRIS ALVARO (18) Christopher Alvaro graduated from Mazenod College in 2018. Since then, he started studying towards a Bachelor of Education – specialising in Drama Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle.

“It was evident to anyone that really knew me at Mazenod, that I had a real love of the Arts. It was an escape for me, to the world where I could perform as a new character or expressed myself on the canvas.”

Chris also works part-time at an entertainment company based in Fremantle that has seen him travel to many places in Perth and across the state.

“The Performing Arts team are truly phenomenal human beings, who continue to not only teach students the content, but also develop and nurture the students as a whole.”

“Since graduation, I have had quite a remarkable start in the world, post-Mazenod. This time has seen me continue to nurture my love of the arts outside the cosy walls of the PAC and Mr Allen’s art room,” Chris said.

“This year, I performed in a musical titled Silas Marner, an original piece by international award winner John Taylor at Midnite Youth Theatre. Usually, I’d like to do more than one musical a year, but in 2019, I was given a unique opportunity in waters much closer to home.”

This year saw Chris take a step off the stage and behind the curtain, taking on the role of stage manager for the 2019 Mazenod College production of ‘Oliver! ‘. The production helped him develop an understanding of another side of the performing arts.

The show also gave Chris the opportunity to direct a few scenes and provide some creative input into the production.

“Oliver was such a fantastic experience and one I’m grateful I had the opportunity to be involved with,” Chris stated.

In the closing months of 2019, Chris I will be involved with the production of a one-act play at Mazenod titled Lovers, at the request of Fr Micheal McMahon OMI, he will be rehearsing for a performance that will be in the ‘Perth Fringe Festival’ and start planning for his directorial debut in 2020.

“Both the visual and performing arts became an essential part of my life. Mr Allen’s art class was always a highlight in my week, a time when I got to work on my project, procrastinate and ask life advice.

However, it was in the PAC, in Miss Parkinson or Mr Jonkov’s drama classes, where I truly discovered my purpose. On the stage is where I learnt to express myself, where I developed a sense of home and belonging. It is through the nurturing of the art teachers that has led me to study in education, their impact has had a profound effect on my career choice.”

Chris’ advice to current Mazenod students is to use their time at the College to develop an understanding of what Mazenod really is. He believes it is not a set of buildings, but the spirit of the community. He suggests that current students try to become part of the community in any way.

Join a team, a choir or a show, get involved on sports days and Mazenod Mission Day, go to the Old Boys Memorial Mass and help out on Open Day. “Learn things about your fellow students, support them and simply find ways to get involved,” Chris said.

“Allow that spirt to have an effect on the type of man you become. It is positive and sees people go far. What I’m really saying is don’t just be a boy that goes to Mazenod but rather become a true Mazenod Man.”

OLIVER! A POINT-OF-VIEW In Term Four 2018, Miss Parkinson saw her son Beau perform in his primary school production of Peter Pan and invited him to participate in the series of workshops being held for Mazenod and St Brigid’s students, prior to the Oliver auditions. During these workshops he immediately felt welcomed and loved the chance of getting to know people before he was even in high school! He practised the dances and songs; and we discussed and agreed as a family that Beau would only audition for the ensemble, as Year 7 is already such a big transition year.

already. Being greeted by older students who remembered him from the workshops was also a buzz.

As rehearsals progressed, we watched Beau grow in confidence and ability. His voice improved and he started perfecting the dances. When he was offered the role of Nipper, he grasped the opportunity and made the role his own.

Then we heard some roles had been cast, and waited a few days with bated breath… the joy and delight on Beau’s face were priceless, when we told him he was in.

We continued to have the discussions that homework and study came first, and I’ve not seen so much dedication from a 12 year old as he worked to fit that around the sometimes 15 hours per week of rehearsals – a very big commitment for all the students of every year group.

This was just the start of Beau’s journey not only into high school, but into the most wonderful, challenging and rewarding of experiences he has ever had. He was so excited to start his first day at Mazenod and had no trepidation, as he already felt comfortable having been to the campus a number of times

As opening night drew closer the excitement was palpable. We heard in every detail how the stage would work, the lighting and the towers. We heard how Beau had another mother, a father, an uncle, a ‘funcle’ (that’s fun uncle to the rest of us!), a sister, an aunt, a brother or three… he felt so included, and

passionate about the friends he was making and what they were achieving together.

Dropping Beau off in the holidays (all the actors and crew gave up their entire second week of holidays to rehearsals), we saw sometimes dreary eyed teachers, Old Boys and volunteers who had been there oft-times from 4:00am giving their all to make ‘Oliver!’ the best experience they could for our kids and the school.

The day of the tech rehearsal arrived and while there were some hiccups with sound, Miss Parkinson, Chris and the rest of the amazing team worked their way through it all, and continued to reassure the cast that they were doing an amazing job.

Opening night. I felt tingles as the live musicians played their opening notes and the first voices launched into Food, Glorious Food. I simply didn’t know where to look, with so much happening right around the stage. The clarity of Allan’s voice as he sang Where is Love, the amazing prosthetics that had been created for a high school musical… and then watching Beau as he stood on that big stage, all alone in the spotlight, to sing the Consider Yourself reprise – my heart was bursting with pride.

I attended five of the seven performances – opening and closing nights in the audience and three other nights helping all the dedicated staff and volunteers as ushers, in the canteen, checking costumes and cleaning up.

Closing night was a day of tears as the reality that all their hard work and dedication was coming to an end, and fear that they may lose touch with new-found friends. I understand Miss Parkinson had to show some tough love to get them through their final performance, but not an inkling of it was evidenced on the stage as they continued with quality professionalism well beyond their years. That final standing ovation would have brought any house down.

The dedication and passion from the teachers whose commitment went above and beyond the call of duty, the volunteers, the cast, the band and the crew were something that not only I, as a helper and parent will always remember, but is something I know will remain as a highlight and inspiration throughout Beau’s schooling life.

PAUL PEACOCK (87) Paul Peacock graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Musical Theatre from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 1994. A former student and staff member at Mazenod College who, since leaving the College as a student in 1985, has had a career in teaching, acting and now mental health.

After being a peripatetic singing tutor at Mazenod for many years, Paul entered the acting industry where he toured with the International company of Les Miserables, was part of the British National tour and West End productions of the show.

Paul has travelled globally partaking in lead roles alongside American Actress, Debbie Reynolds, he was also was involved in concerts with Disney, television commercials, various acting roles, directing films and completing voice over work.

Since parting ways with the acting world, Paul’s career is now focused on mental health. He has spent the past seven years working in psychiatric hostels assisting people with complex mental health and drug and alcohol issues. Currently working at Holyoake as a DRUMBEAT master trainer and facilitator, Paul runs classes for children who have complex trauma

and behavioral challenges. Paul greatly appreciates the opportunity he has where he can incorporate his past experiences of music, with his mental health knowledge, to facilitate recovery-based activities for his patients.

His fondest memory at the College was during his time as the singing teacher. Seeing students express their artistic talents and interests in a safe and supportive environment resonated with him.

“The continued support and guidance from the College staff displayed the shift in mindset towards the arts at Mazenod College,” Paul said.

As a past student and teacher at Mazenod, Paul’s advice for current students is to follow their dreams, but also to be flexible and open to new ideas and opportunities. This is undoubtedly something that Paul will reinforce to his two young sons.

Paul’s career change from acting to mental health was something that he never imagined, yet it is a career that allows him to help people overcome trauma and mental health issues. He finds it a truly life changing and rewarding job.

OLIVER MCDONALD (11) After finishing his secondary education at Mazenod, Oliver McDonald officially launched Oli in late 2012 from a small home studio, but the idea had been in the making since he was 13. The idea was to create something original, authentic and raw.

“While at Mazenod I learnt the importance of being dedicated and having a good work ethic,” Oliver said.

Oli continues to hand draw and hand-print all of his t-shirts with his team out of their studio in Perth.

With a heavy emphasis on extreme detail and subtle intricacy, Oli aims to create products that genuinely feel like a piece of art. Now the director of Oli Clothing, his clothing label is a well-established brand across Australia with a Mount Lawley brick and mortar store as well as an online store.

“The most important thing is to enjoy your time at Mazenod. I met some of my best friends there and I still keep in contact with them today, eight years on,” he added.

2019 CHINA IMMERSION In the October holidays 11 students and three staff went on an immersion to Beijing in China. This was the first time that the College had sent a group to China since 2016. The group was hosted by Fr Johnny Rakotoarisoa OMI and Fr Rey Emmanuel Amancio OMI. This immersion gave the staff and students a unique insight into the Oblates mission in Beijing. Students undertook activities that ranged from sightseeing to working hands on with a number of different groups of children in homework centers, cultural activities and play groups.

Below is a short summary from Toby De Nardi, one of the students who took part in the immersion.

The China Immersion Trip 2019 was a once in a lifetime opportunity and was an amazing experience.

We got to experience the Chinese culture, visit tourist attractions, help out at certain places, and

meet amazing people. The Immersion was based in Beijing for 10 days at the start of the October school holidays. The group of 14 students and staff from Mazenod spent time with Oblates, Fr Johnny OMI and Fr Rey OMI, who were thoroughly immersed in their communities.

By far the best experience for me personally was visiting the children at the Five Loaves and Two Fish centre. We got to meet a lot of friendly kids and help them learn and pronounce some English. We played games with them, andkicked footballs with them, the joy on the kid’s faces was the best thing to experience. They loved the small things in life and appreciated us being there very much.

I would highly encourage anyone who has the opportunity, to attend an immersion tour.

MAKING THE CUT The WA Youth Theatre Company and Black Swan State Theatre, in collaboration with the Heath Ledger Theatre recently conducted an open call workshop for boys aged between 10 and 16. This workshop was facilitated by nationally recognised theatre director Sally Richardson and is part of the casting process leading to the Black Swan State Theatre Company production of MEDEA in 2019.

Around 200 boys attended the open audition from which 20 boys are selected to participate in an eight week professional theatre workshop, conducted by the director of MEDEA. In the end, four boys will be cast in this production.

“I am really excited to be part of the workshops and the opportunity to be considered for the play”, Lachlan Ives said.

Running concurrently with the Mazenod College production of the hit musical ‘Oliver!’, the boys will be working hard to follow their dreams.

“I can’t wait to get started! I’m so thrilled for the opportunity to work with the state theatre company, and to work and learn as much as I can from an amazing director”, Leo said.

“We are so lucky to have this amazing opportunity to experience professional theatre and work with some of the State’s greatest

performers and director. Industry experience is hard to come by, I can’t wait to get started”, Kofi said.

“At Mazenod College we try to ensure that we cater for all boys and provide opportunity in a wide variety of activities. We are very proud of our three students who have really worked hard in the performing arts at the college”, Mr Watson added.

The course was conducted at the King Street Arts Centre from 10 March to 5 May 2019. As a result, Lachlan Ives was selected for a role in the production.

“My favourite part about the experience was learning from great people that have a lot of experience in the show biz and making friends with the cast and crew”, Lachlan said.

“I learnt a lot from being a part of MEDEA and realised that on the inside I’m probably still a nine year old kid. It was a great experience and I had lots of fun.”

MAZENOD OLD BOYS PRESIDENT’S REPORT To MOB Association membership, Mr Andrew Watson Principal of Mazenod College, Staff of Mazenod College, the Mazenod College Board and Mazenod College parents, students and community, I would like to officially present the Mazenod College Old Boys Association Presidents Report for 2018 – 2019. Furthermore, on behalf of the MOB committee, I would like to express my gratitude and wish to thank each of the previously identified groups for their support and patronage given to the MOB Association.

I would like to pay tribute and honour to the late Fr Peter Daly for his great assistance and belief in founding the ‘concept’ of having a MOB Association.

Fr Peter Daly will forever be fondly remembered and venerated for his pro-active work with the MOB.

Various activities and high levels of communication via emails, Facebook and school newsletters resulted in 2019 being a very important year in affirming the MOB culture within the College.

Positive responses made by past old boys, feedback provided by Year 11 and 12 students, conversations held with teachers and parents of the College, as well as emails received by the MOB liaison officer, complimenting the MOB Association on its connection with past students highlighted the proactive work by the committee while reinforcing the message about the importance of being part of the Old Boys.

2018–2019 period has been extremely successful and positive. This has been evident with the popularity of the planned MOB activities, including the organising and management of MOB events, attendance of MOB reunions, charitable MOB acts for past and present Mazenod College boys/families and in the growth of the MOB profile and presence within the College and the Hills community.

This year’s President’s and Treasurer’s reports highlighting the financial statement for the past year and general business discussion. As this is the end of my five year term as President, the planned MOB events for 2020 outlining the strategic direction will not be included, as this will be created by the incoming President and Executive.

Each MOB event was very well advertised, supported and directly linked to the MOB Association’s aims, vision and values. The 2019 focus and commitment demonstrated by the committee

PRESIDENTS REPORT 2018 – 2019 The year has been very successful with consistent MOB community growth, high level of MOB support and positive community validation towards nurturing our associations vision and goals. Our thanks to MOB members, families, College staff and community for their support that has been extremely generous and valued.

MOB Association comprises a volunteer based group of Old Boys who have a vision of serving their Mazenod community after leaving/graduating from the College. It is their way to give back and ensure that the last day of school does not mean the last day of ‘Mazenod community spirit’.

- Mazenod Old Boys Hockey Match - Mazenod Old Boys Basketball Match - Mazenod Old Boys Footy Match.

- Mazenod Golf Day - Mazenod Old Boys Mass - “Sunday Session with the MOB” at the Kalamunda Hotel - Mazenod Old Boys Footy Tipping Competition • MOB continued to focus on assisting with individual ‘hardship funding cases’. These were discussed and recorded in the minutes. The set budget was fulfilled.

• Constitution update to comply with new legislation was completed.

This is the completion of my five year term as President of the MOB. It has been extremely rewarding and highly gratifying. Thank you to all our members and supporters for helping us grow and make a difference in our community.

From the high level of membership, success of events organised and passion from its committee ‌ it is very clear that the MOB is truly part of the College community.

Huge acknowledgement must go to the 2019 MOB committee for their time, dedication and commitment – your devotion, loyalty and belief in our cause is truly valued and appreciated. Finally, to the MOB community, Oblate Priests, Mazenod Staff, students and parents, I wish everyone all the very best.

A NEW BEGINNING John Keogh (04) was elected President of the Mazenod Old Boys at the recent Annual General Meeting. The Keogh family has had a long association with the College, with John’s brothers Matt (98) and Vincent (01) attending prior to his enrolment and younger brother, Luke (15) following soon after him.

As a student at Mazenod, John was active in leadership for many years, including serving as a College Prefect. After graduation, he continued to contribute to the College and was involved in whole school productions of Jesus Christ: Superstar in 2005 and The Producers in 2007.

John graduated from Notre Dame University in 2009, completing a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts. During his time at university, John participated in leadership activities, serving as the Education

Representative on the Student Association, and President of the Education Society. He also had the pleasure of having outgoing MOB President, Leo Conti as a lecturer, who also taught him at Mazenod!

In 2015, John completed his Master of Education at Notre Dame.

John returned to Mazenod College in 2011, teaching Religious Education. He joined the Mazenod Old Boys Committee in 2014 and was Vice-President in 201819.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Old Boys, the College and the wider Mazenod Community in continuing to advance the Mazenod Old Boys Association”, John said.

“2020 at the very least looks to be an exciting year, as we celebrate 10 years as an official association”.
