Early in the year we were very hopeful of reigniting our activities and programmes.

Except for the Year 7 camp that was cancelled due to a oneweek lockdown, all our Outdoor Education camps and summer sports occurred.

Music ensembles were gathering and Mission Action Day was a resounding success. We were very conscious of the Year 7 students missing out on their camp because their year level would have been impacted in 2020, many losing the opportunity to have camp and other prominent activities in their final year of Primary School. At the time of writing this article, it is hoped we will have the Year 7 Camp in the final weeks of school, all going well with the vaccination rollout.

Words like fatigue, drudgery, anxiety, annoyance, and frustration would undoubtedly resonate with everyone over the last two years and feelings of desperation and despair have been evident for families seriously impacted

by COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns.

We have missed the vitality of the events and the gatherings that are crammed into the conventional calendar. Financial hardship, crises with mental health and forced family disconnection, especially at times of mourning and serious illness, have created feelings of desperation and immense sadness.

Other words that come to mind when we observe how families, staff and students have handled this passage in history are inspiration, gratitude, generosity, self sacrifice, resilience, good humour and connection. Senior students have complied and trusted their teachers and administrators to manage their assessments and programmes and the Year 7 to 10 students have continually mustered discipline to engage in online classes. The teachers have also been amazing. Their creativity, their fast tracking of technology, their doggedness to endure a Remote Learning Platform strategy that requires connection and presence, has been outstanding.

The Educational Support staff behind the scenes have ensured the service and support to students and staff and have provided solutions in so many areas when the community has been challenged.

Our parents have been so supportive and appreciative of the College’s efforts, and we are very grateful for that support.

In 2016 Mazenod joined the Respectful Relationship Project and in 2020 we introduced the Visible Wellbeing Project looking at a whole school approach to Positive Psychology. Both projects have served us well and provided a clarity and prominence to beliefs and behaviours that are intrinsic to the Gospel Message.

The student leaders have brilliantly adjusted and innovated their leadership model to manage Remote Learning and still deliver poignant and relevant information on resilience, mental wellbeing and respectful relationships. The milestones for our young people have been impacted and the Senior students feel it especially. Their demeanour and positive response to disappointment has been extraordinary.

Our new building project has been tendered and builders appointed. The eight-stage project will include the renovation of all the classrooms from Year 8 to 10 and the Science Laboratories. Stages 1 and 2 include the Learning Centre being moved to the staffroom to provide greater space and facilities; the upgrade of the canteen and cafeteria; development of students’ facilities including Health Centre and toilets, and a new staff facility above the canteen designed to serve staff and community groups such as the Parents’ and Friends’ Association.

Finally, I am very cognisant of finishing as Principal at the end of the year. In future years I look forward to working at the College in some capacity, continuing to enjoy the company of staff and to enjoy the enthusiasm and good humour of our students.

I have so many fantastic memories of which I am very grateful. I would like to thank the College community, especially the Oblates of Mary Immaculate for their trust and support over my time at the College. I was appointed to the College by Fr Kevin Davine OMI at the end of 1995. I served as a Deputy Principal to Fr John Sherman OMI, Fr Pat Moroney OMI, Fr Michael Twigg OMI and Fr Christian Fini OMI and as Principal to Fr Christian and Fr Harry Dyer OMI. Mr Peter Le Grand, Mr Eugene Fredericks and the College Board; parents of the past and current families; former students and current students; staff members from earlier times; College Leadership Team and current staff members, I would like to say thank you.

I feel so privileged and honoured to be given leadership opportunities at the College and I feel humbled by the appreciation and acknowledgement of so many in the community.

On the 18th of January, Fr Harry Dyer OMI, a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate, arrived as the 10th Rector of Mazenod College.

Fr Harry was born in Yallourn Hospital, Latrobe Valley, Gippsland, about 120 kilometres East of Melbourne. His education was at St Mary’s Primary School, Newborough and then St Paul’s Marist Brothers College, now Lavalla College, Traralgon. Fr Harry’s parents, Harry and May, are both deceased. He has two younger sisters, three nephews, two nieces, eight great nephews and three great nieces.

After school he commenced work with the Victorian Public Service in 1972 with State Insurance before transferring back to his home area after securing a transfer with the Housing Commission to Morwell. In 1984, after 10 years in the Victorian Public Service, he entered the Oblate Seminary. He was ordained a priest on July 13, 1990 in his home parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Newborough.

Fr Harry has been entrusted with a variety of appointments for the Oblates. His main ministry has been a rewarding and enjoyable involvement with God’s people in parish life in New Zealand, Victoria, and Queensland. Fr Harry has also been appointed as Director of Rosies—an outreach to the homeless and street kids on the Gold Coast and Director of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (MAMI). Between 2007 and 2013, Fr Harry served as the Oblate Provincial for the Australian Oblate Province and China Delegation. Whilst at St Kieran’s, Moe from 2014 to 2021, Fr Harry was a volunteer Victorian Police Chaplain for the Latrobe Police Service Area. He

was also invited by the Bishop of Sale to be an inaugural Director on the Board of the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd and on the Bishop’s Board of Consultors.

Fr Harry’s interests are family, friends, Collingwood Football Club and he is a Life Member of the Latrobe Valley Umpires Association.

This year Fr Harry Dyer became a part of our Mazenod College community by taking on the role of Rector.

As a Year 12 student, it has been inspiring to see the positivity and humour Fr Harry has brought to the faithful and friendly culture at our College. His sermons and addresses are always relatable and I believe they have helped make faith more accessible to all students at Mazenod. He has become a great role model for all students, especially through his passionate support of the Collingwood Football Club. Overall, I feel that our community is lucky to have such a devoted and caring person to help guide us through life’s struggles.

James Russell (Year 12) Being assigned Rector of Mazenod College is no small task, but Fr Harry has embraced this new role with a smile on his face. He has redefined what it means to be a Rector through his interesting, diverse, and, above all, hilarious weekly newsletter articles. Alongside being an avid Pies supporter, Fr Harry has never ceased to bring a smile to our faces during the ups and downs of this year.

Irrespective of whether it is remote learning or face-toface, Fr Harry has sought to maintain connections with the students, through daily visits into classes during school, and encouraging participation in online Masses.

Jacob Luu (Year 11) Fr Harry Dyer, the newest Rector at our College for 2021, has taken over from Fr Fini after being named the Oblate Provincial responsible for all the Oblate congregations in Australia and Hong Kong. During the year we have been extremely lucky to have his bright, bubbly personality in our classrooms and hallways. Whether it is popping his head into our classrooms or having a good conversation in the corridor about what subjects you have been doing or the recent Collingwood game. Fr Harry has been an amazing addition to our Mazenod community by his outgoing and approachable nature, this has been a much needed addition in light of the most recent lockdown.

Overall, we thank Fr Harry for his first year at the College and we look forward to seeing him again in the hallways when we get back to school.

Terron King (Year 10)

Antony Thabesan (Year 9) The impact Fr Harry has had not only on me, but my year level and the whole school has been so important. As our new Rector, Fr Harry has certainly done an amazing job making the Oblate presence felt throughout the College, always making us laugh every time we see him. Fr Harry will make time to visit our online Homeroom through Mr Riley to say hello to us, as well as run the Masses every morning, which goes to show just how much he does even before Period 1. Back when we were at school, Fr Harry would always make us laugh at assembly with his Collingwood jokes. I know everyone in our Year 8 cohort appreciates Fr Harry and what he does for us at Mazenod!

Patrick Klonis (Year 8) Fr Harry is a wonderful priest and an amazing person. He is nice, polite and funny! Fr Harry has made lockdown a fun and joyful experience with all the effort he puts in the assemblies. Fr Harry is generally that type of person who cares about everyone at Mazenod and he’s been a great inspiration to many of the students. He takes the time to come and see us during class and is just such a caring person. On behalf of the Year 7 students, thank you for making our first year at Mazenod fascinating.

Joshua Morin (Year 7)

Fr Harry, a die-hard Magpie fan, joined Mazenod College as our new Rector. As a Year 9 cohort, it was good to see Father making himself known to the students as they introduced themselves to him and had chats. He was very approachable as he would usually be walking around the school, dropping into classes and sporting fields to watch the ACC teams versus other schools. Fr Harry’s efforts did not go unnoticed as they made impacts across the Year 9 cohort which helped students. Fr Harry was easy to talk to and always would have a cheerful smile on his face which would make

I know you are all too young, most of you anyway, but some music buffs might remember the song, “The Times They Are A-Changing’” written by Bob Dylan and included in his 1964 album of the same name. Dylan wrote the song as a deliberate attempt to create an anthem of change for the time, influenced by Irish and Scottish ballads. Remembering this song is the reason I chose to use this picture for my Rector’s report for the 2021 Mazenodian as, I believe, it is a symbol of the year and times we have all endured.

While I started the year with a mix of excitement and nervousness, starting a new ministry as Rector of Mazenod College has not gone as I would have envisaged. I have really missed the opportunity to get to know our students during this year, especially the graduating class of Year 12.

Fortunately, before life began to change again, we experienced a hectic start to the year with staff meetings, welcoming our young men, especially our new Year 7 cohort, who we were looking forward to assisting on their journey of spiritual, intellectual and physical development. Another major achievement was getting all the year level and staff photos taken. I think I had my photo taken about 15 times that day.

The tradition and highlight of the start of our new academic year has been the Inaugural Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral when we gather as an entire Mazenod College community. On Friday February 26, with COVID-19 restrictions in place, the celebration of the 2021 Inaugural Mass was instead held in our Provence Centre. Fortunately, with modern technology, we were able to live stream this solemn occasion to our families and extended College friends who were not able to be present.

The simple blessing and installation ceremony as Mazenod College’s 10th Rector was a moving experience for me. My family was disappointed they could not be present with me on such an important occasion as they were really looking forward to witnessing their brother, uncle and great uncle being installed as the Rector. My family was also looking forward to experiencing the wonderful talents of our students through their various involvements in our celebration of the Eucharist.

It was great to welcome Fr Christian Fini OMI, Oblate Provincial, as our main celebrant for the Inaugural Mass. I take this opportunity to thank Fr Christian Fini OMI for his time as Rector Principal of the College.

His enthusiasm and vision are still being experienced

through his important ministry as Provincial of the Australian Province and China Delegation and as a member of the Mazenod College Advisory Council.

On a sadder note, we gathered on Monday March 1 in our Provence Centre for a Requiem Mass to celebrate the life of Fr Ian Mackintosh OMI. Fr Ian was the 3rd Rector of the College and the first Victorian Oblate Rector to pass into eternal life. Our students and staff gave a fitting tribute to Fr Ian with a memorable guard of honour along Kernot Avenue as Fr Ian was taken to his final resting place.

In the week prior to Easter and respecting COVID restrictions, we managed to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for all students as they prepared for Easter. Our young men and teachers enthusiastically participated in our Mission Action Day (MAD) on Thursday April 1. The $50,000.00 raised will support our Oblate Missionaries to assist their people, especially those in difficult missions in our Asia Oceania Region, to have access to fresh water, education, health care, and the basic necessities of life that we can tend to take for granted. On behalf of the Oblates I thank you all, especially our families, for your ongoing generous support.

There is no doubt that we all need to adapt to our changing times and acclimatising to the new environment has meant getting my head around new terminology and technology and living by the bell, with Zoom and live streaming becoming my new buzz words. The interaction of our partnership with students and parents was going to be another highlight of my new role. However, the onagain off-again lockdowns began to play havoc with our

In 2022 we will welcome our new Principal, Dr Paul Shannon, to our Mazenod Community. Paul is certainly excited about his new role and looking forward to being part of the Mazenod College community. In welcoming a new Principal it means we have to say farewell to Mr Tony Coghlan. Mr Coghlan has fulfilled his interim Principal role in an outstanding manner with his focus always on the wellbeing of the staff and our students. I take this opportunity to recognise, celebrate and thank Mr Coghlan for his remarkable and tireless contribution over his years of service in the teaching, administration, and leadership roles within our Mazenod College community. Mr Coghlan has been a tremendous support to the Oblates and exemplifies St Eugene who was known as a man with a heart as big as the world for everyone.

I extend my appreciation to the new Mazenod College Advisory Council which came into existence this year under the new Archdiocesan model (MACS). I thank them for their generosity in being prepared to share their talents for the benefit of the College.

I thank my Oblate Community of Fr Kevin Davine OMI, (celebrating 62 years of priesthood), Fr Giancarlo ILLO OMI (celebrating 20 years of priesthood) and Fr Eric Alleaume OMI (celebrating 30 years of priesthood), as we ministered together in the College and St John Vianney’s parish under the new model of Mulgrave Oblate Community. This new model of community was a response by our Provincial and Council to our declining numbers and to be faithful to our Oblate Charism of living in community rather than Oblates living on their own. This style of community is also being lived in Queensland with Iona College and St Oliver Plunkett Parish, Cannon Hill, combining.

I also want to extend my appreciation to the teachers and staff, with a special mention to those who are moving to new positions or retiring. They have been generous in welcoming and supporting me in my new journey. There is no doubt that the teachers and staff have been committed to the wellbeing and education of every student as they overcame the many hurdles that this pandemic has thrown their way.

Finally, I pray every blessing for our 2021 graduating students of Mazenod College. I hope they will hold their time here as a treasured memory of friendships made, a faith lived and a sound education gained, all of which will last well beyond their graduation. I hope all their dreams for the future will be fulfilled and remember that once a Mazenod student always a Mazenod student.

During this complex year I believe we have certainly lived by St Eugene’s motto: “Leave Nothing Undared”.

RECTOR S REPORT

Despite the lack of community events, I have really enjoyed the challenge of communicating with the wider community when writing my weekly newsletter. I believe it is a great way to interact with you on the various levels of our College life. I have appreciated the genuine feedback from parents who have expressed their enjoyment of the newsletter and associated Oblate series. Even my ‘Keep Smiling’ joke has brightened people’s week.

daily routine and planning. Our Year 7, 8, 9 Information Nights were the first casualties, followed by the eventual cancellation of many of our College activities including the Avila/Mazenod Musical, Speech Night and Year 12 Formal.

College C a p ta i n From 4 lockdowns to 4 GAT reschedules, I am sure many of us would rather ‘4get’ this year entirely. Yet, it would be unfair to ignore the incredible achievements and beautiful memories created within the community despite every setback. So, I would like to take a look back on what has been 2021 by covering the three principles I pledged to lead by in my first address as Captain: Leave Nothing Undared With restrictions unclear and Mission Action Day in jeopardy, the leadership team was challenged to dream bigger and to, in the words of Bear Grylls: “Improvise.

Adapt. Overcome.”

So, with the generous support of the staff, we were empowered to formulate ‘March MADness’, a month full of activities and festivities to raise money for the Oblate missions. We also introduced a recycling program to address the ever-growing issue of environmental sustainability which we hope is only one small step of many. I could not be prouder of what the Year 12 leadership body was able to achieve even with the busyness and uncertainty during Term 1.

Leave No One Behind What has been felt more than ever this year is the absence of hallway talk, class shenanigans and lunchtimes spent together. The community is what makes Mazenod unique, what makes school feel like home rather than hell. There is an undeniable sense of belonging felt, not only within year levels or faculties but

also throughout the entire College. The positivity that comes from joining in laughter at assemblies, in prayer at Mass, or in solidarity during March MADness is simply irreplaceable.

Leave As Men I would like to thank my Year 7 Homeroom teacher, Mr Davies, who in my very first parent teacher interview told me that he could see me becoming College Captain.

And here we are now. It just goes to show how quickly time flies and how God’s plan comes to fruition. I am so grateful that Mazenod goes beyond academics and continuously invests in the formation of our character. The various retreat days, chats with staff and opportunities for reconciliation have given us a chance to become the best versions of ourselves. It is rather overwhelming to reflect upon the impact that so many moments have had on the formation of me and my fellow classmates of 2021 and the special letters from Year 12 retreat were a real testament to this.

I would like to conclude by giving a massive thank you to the Oblates, Mr Coghlan, Mrs Bourne and the staff who work tirelessly to make going to Mazenod such a privilege. But above all, I would like to thank my fellow graduating students for being my brothers and making every memory from the past six years that much better.

May our friendships formed here ever flourish and grow.

It has been an honour serving as the College Captain for 2021 and though it is time to begin a new chapter, Mazenod will have a very special place in my heart for the rest of my life.

College Life As everyone has experienced, lockdown was hard. However, the College Life Prefects tried their hardest to get the school together and to lift the levels of community and school spirit.

At Mazenod, we pride ourselves on having a strong community and love to involve everyone in different aspects of the College, from old boys, families and current students.

With the numerous lockdowns it was challenging for the boys to organise full school activities, so during lockdown 6 the leaders made a video in relation to R U OK Day with the importance of balancing homelife, academics and relationships with different people in their lives. We wish everyone luck for the year ahead and congratulate the Year 11 students who will be taking over the leadership roles for the College in 2022.

Ryan Dean (Head Prefect) Sport and Nodder Spirit This year, the Sport and Nodder Spirit Prefects worked to build House spirit and encourage all students to enjoy healthy competitiveness and stay active.

Dodgeball became a recurring theme for exciting lunchtime experiences. Term 1 saw a teacher versus Year 12 students Dodgeball match in the lead up to Mission Action Day. Term 2 was the

chance for Year 7, 8 and 9 students to get onto the court, with Oblate Week lunchtime activities that saw students engaging in good-spirited competition for their Houses. This was a great initiative that helped boost House spirit in the Junior School.

Lockdowns caused the cancellation of many plans, but it did not stop the enthusiastic Sport Prefects from sharing fun ways to stay active and healthy whilst in remote learning. A huge thanks goes out to the Prefect team, who worked hard to provide the student body with unique and rewarding opportunities.

James Russell (College Vice Captain) Student Wellbeing and Peer Support Despite a year filled with despairing lockdowns and dismal online classes, the Peer Support Prefects were still able to implement some initiatives.

The Year 11 Peer Support program was still able to provide Year 7 students with some comfort and fun in their first year at the school.

P re f e c t s Re p o r t co nt i n u e d With frequent Homeroom visits, along with activities like meme competitions, Isolation Creations and Kahoots, the Peer Support team aimed to ensure that Year 7 students had a pleasant first year amidst the chaos of online learning.

Even with plans to raise further awareness on mental health on RUOK Day, somewhat halted by lockdowns, it did not keep us from spreading our message. Although not being done directly in classrooms or at assembly, videos with Year 12 leaders delivering the importance of mental health were sent to ensure that the student body was reminded of the need to look after themselves and their mates.

Joshua Hicks (College Vice Captain) VCAL and Academics This year, the main focus of the Academics portfolio was a tutoring program to encourage interaction between Senior and Junior students. Despite numerous complications everyone approached the initiative enthusiastically and with a clear desire to help. I would like to express my gratitude and praise for the character and work of the staff and students involved.

Even though we would have liked to have helped many more students than we did, it is undoubtedly the case that our work was worth it because of those that we were able to help.

Meanwhile, the Year 12 VCAL students have reached the final stages of their landscaping project at the College.

This project has given the students an opportunity to work as a team in a practical manner, providing both an inspiration to other students and a great service to the College. Their continued input, despite being at home, is also a great testament to their dedication.

Faith and Mission This year, the Faith and Mission Prefect team has supported the expression of our Catholic identity and Oblate charism through two initiatives.

Every day, a Prefect would lead the College in a time of prayer, during which we joined the Oblates in their daily prayer intentions and concluded with the iconic College prayer.

Additionally, we organised a lunchtime program called ‘Faith and Food’, which gave Senior students the opportunity to engage and openly discuss unfamiliar or misunderstood Catholic teachings with staff over a meal. Unfortunately, due to the extended lockdown

during Term 3, we were only able to hold one session, but it was beneficial to all who attended.

Nevertheless, we would like to thank the Oblates and the staff for their continuous support in our endeavours and for providing us so many opportunities to not only nurture our faith but grow as young men.

Anthony Yong (College Captain) Music and Performing Arts In 2021, the Music and Performing Arts Prefects found themselves facing multiple lockdowns, which severely crippled the “performing” aspect of the portfolio.

However, despite the cancellations of the musical and music gala, the portfolio still organised a fabulous virtual Performing Arts Festival.

A more unconventional undertaking than usual, the Festival still allows the creativity of the College to be put on full display, but this time from an electronic medium. Ultimately, we were privileged to still have the opportunity to perform for the school, despite all the complications that we faced this year.

Mateo Acosta Fernandez (Head Prefect)

S ta ff Re p o r t Last year’s Staff report concluded with the rhetorical question ‘may the oceans provide smoother sailing ahead?’ This was not the case in 2021. Instead, we adapted to uncertainty and grew accustomed to expecting the unexpected. In fact, this year’s report is written with a strong sense of déjà vu following four lockdowns and countless COVID-19 tests, all underpinned by growing expertise in online teaching and learning strategies.

Consequently, enormous pressure was placed on our students and staff, requiring increased flexibility and growing resilience. The College leadership team was enriched with the appointment of our new College Rector, Fr Harry Dyer OMI. Fr Harry’s humour, faith, and passion for reaching out to our de Mazenod family have been invaluable in navigating the uncertainty. The Executive team expanded with the creation of three new roles. The position of Deputy Principal of Learning and Teaching was assumed by Matthew Fyfield. John Tighe stepped into the role of Dean of Faith and Oblate Charism and Kyle Hoad was appointed Dean of Data, Systems and Analysis. Thus, began the new threeyear tenure for all College positions of leadership. In particular, we thank our Middle Leaders for taking on additional responsibilities to steady the ship.

As a means of targeting teaching to students whose learning was disrupted by the pandemic, a governmentfunded learning initiative was implemented at the beginning of the year. Over 250 students received additional literacy and numeracy tuition from accomplished teachers Erika Tennant, Bronwyn De Beer, Mary Stoforidis, Chris Murphy, Mary Pegram and our very own Fr Kevin Davine OMI. We appreciate their support and commitment to our learning programs.

We also welcomed new teachers Mie Takamatsu to the Japanese department, Peter Nguyen to classroom Music, Joshua Hunter and Claire Russo to the Religious Education faculty and Lucia Hosking to the English faculty. Their flexibility in adapting to the College remote learning environment was testament to their professionalism.

Flipping to the online learning environment with minimal notice would not have been possible without our education support staff. This year, we welcomed IT Support Technician Callum Branagan, who displayed incredible patience along the journey. Other recruits included Food Technology Assistant Karen Ansell and Technology Assistant Scott Cunningham. Bridgette Gray replaced Fleur Ellis as Sport Facilities Coordinator and former student Trent Symss was employed as an AFL Sports Trainee. The Faith and Oblate Charism team also welcomed Old Boys, Adil Alvarez and Luke Schaefer. Our

new office administrative assistants Eleshia Hill and Wendy Liu were tasked with keeping us connected via staff mail-outs. They were joined by Jenna Dye who returned from maternity leave.

Georgia Lawrence showed versatility, stepping into the dual roles of Learning Support Officer and Italian Language Assistant. Other Language Assistants included Huroko Akatsuka and Yu Lei. With ‘an eye on tomorrow’, Alison Alberico, from Emmaus College, was appointed to the position of College Registrar.

Furthermore, as our own staff navigated the challenges of the pandemic, juxtaposed with the demands of family life, we were fortunate to enlist the support of relief teachers. We thank Richard Faragher, Annaliese Leon, Miram O’Brien, Emmanuel Gelberidis, Carolyn Gekas, Alex Keser, Meg Newman, Mel Asik, Ross Vernon, Christina Klonis, Maggie Georgopolous and Lydia St Ange. During an era of teacher shortages, we were grateful for attracting such talent.

Meanwhile, we celebrated new life and marriage.

Jamie and Ardrie Davin were thrilled by the arrival of their son Ethan. Nick and Adriana Marturano welcomed Alessio Angelo. Ben and Lauren Benke were blessed by the arrival of Michael Dominic. Adrian and Elspeth De Fanti welcomed their daughter Fenella Elsie Fern, Paul and Rachael Harrop welcomed Kailani Sophia and, Christina Schumann and Sam became proud parents of Jack Gabriel Rebbechi. In addition, the year ended with the new arrival of Isabella Rose to Rachel and Joe Horne and the Sharrock family welcomed Cora May. In a stroke of good luck, Lauren Oliver married her beau Matthew Hames between lockdowns at the beginning of the year. Along the way, we farewelled staff members Trevor Parker, Fleur Ellis, Naomi Grima, Denise Tan, Matthew Rowland, Mira Strengers, Yoshi Fuji, Maurice Lee, Georgia Lawrence and John Wright. We wish them success in their future endeavours and show our appreciation for their contribution to the College.

Finally, we thank our entire team of dedicated staff who looked out for each others’ wellbeing without ever losing sight of the wellbeing of our students. We acknowledge our skipper and Principal, Tony Coghlan. As he steps away from the helm, we express our gratitude for his leadership and wish him and his wife Cathie a welldeserved break.

Visible Wellbeing combines the science of wellbeing with the science of learning to achieve the three key goals of: • helping students and staff to more clearly see their own and others’ wellbeing using visible wellbeing practices; • helping students and staff more systematically build wellbeing using the SEARCH framework; • facilitating learning through the Visible Wellbeing classroom process.

Visible Wellbeing is not a set curriculum, it is a flexible approach which can be applied across any subject matter, and in all contexts – primary, secondary, in the staff room and with the affiliated Mazenod community groups. With the Visible Wellbeing approach, academic learning and wellbeing are truly integrated. Visible Wellbeing complements our existing student wellbeing programs delivered at Mazenod in a variety of formats including, extended Homerooms, seminars, Personal and Social Learning timetabled classes, retreats, camps and dedicated Personal Development days. All wellbeing programs are designed to address age and stage wellbeing issues.

Visible Wellbeing is Mazenod’s approach to creating resilient, happy and successful young men.

The goal of a Visible Wellbeing approach is to make wellbeing visible so that we can proactively intervene and make changes in our students’ lives and our own. We do this through acknowledging the negative, but specifically working to amplify the positives and increase overall wellbeing with students and staff consciously thinking about what they see, hear and feel in all situations.

The SEARCH Framework includes Strengths, Emotional Management, Attention and Awareness, Relationships, Coping and finally, Habits and Goals.

After much discernment and planning, Mazenod launched its Visible Wellbeing approach in 2021 with a focus on Character Strengths and how they can be utilised to enhance and improve wellbeing. In the latter parts of 2020, all staff attended Professional Learning in Visible Wellbeing and the first module on Strengths. This was followed up with Emotional Management in July. In the future, further training in the remaining modules contained in the SEARCH Framework will be conducted. Listed below are just some of the achievements and changes in practice that have occurred during the first year of implementation.

Thank You Mr Tony Coghlan

2021 marks the end of Tony Coghlan’s tenure as Principal of the College.

His appointment as the first lay Principal of Mazenod came after Fr Christian Fini’s election to the position of Provincial of the Oblate Order in 2018.

The selection of Tony to the role of Principal was the obvious choice. In the 26 years that he has been employed by the Oblates, Tony has always held leadership positions. His wisdom, compassion, ability to consider all aspects of a problem and his handling of sensitive issues are his strengths. Tony has a delightful sense of humour, he is compassionate and Tony is unwavering in his support of the Oblate Priests.

There is no better way to thank Tony for his leadership through the change of governance, a massive building program and a pandemic than to hear from the Rectors that he has supported in his time at the College.

On behalf of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Tony Coghlan for his dedicated service to Mazenod College over many years, and particularly over the last three years. Mazenod College, the extended community and the Oblates are grateful that he took on the role as the first lay Principal for the last three years. He was the right person of vision, faith and commitment to navigate the College through what would be one of its most significant changes in governance, especially during a period of change for Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

I have been privileged to work closely with Tony and have learnt a great deal from him over the last six years.

Two conversations with him stand out for me, which speak to the quality and professionalism of the man. The first conversation was shortly after it was announced that I would be taking on the role of Rector and Principal of Mazenod. I openly expressed my concern at how green and new I was to everything in education. Tony reassured me and was very supportive, reminding me that the community was committed to the Oblates and the College and they were here to support me.

and every decision he made, no matter how tough the decision had to be. I always knew that I could rely on Tony for honest feedback and support.

The second conversation was the morning after I was appointed Provincial, which brought my position as Rector and Principal to an abrupt end, giving little time to manage what would be one of the most significant changes in governance in the College’s 52 years.

That morning I spoke to Tony from Fremantle, where I was about to commence my annual retreat and said, “I think I might need your help in managing the transition in leadership of the College.” His response was an immediate “whatever you need.” I am not sure in that split second he realised that he was putting his hand up to be the first lay Principal, transitioning from Catholic Education Melbourne to Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Ltd, and leading the community through a oncein-a-lifetime pandemic.

Tony has been a faithful leader at Mazenod for many years, and his leadership has always been characterised by service of others, but especially the young men at Mazenod. His faithfulness and generosity over the last three years in particular is a testimony to the quality of the person. Talking to the Old Boy community, he is one of the staff members who is always mentioned and held in high regard.

I would like to thank Tony for his faith and for his dedication to the teaching profession and to the students, families and staff that we serve at Mazenod. I wish him every blessing in the transition from his current leadership role at Mazenod.

I have only had a professional working association with Tony during this year. However, even prior to this association, Tony has always been welcoming to me and all Oblates who have been fortunate to cross his path.

our Priests, and to myself in a kindly way on my return. Many blessings to you, Tony, and your family. You will always be part of the development and spirit of Mazenod.

Tony is certainly held in high esteem by the Oblates for the way he embodies the ethos of Catholic Education and especially the Charism of St Eugene de Mazenod through his partnership with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

It is with mixed emotions that I pen these few words on the occasion of the retirement of Tony Coghlan as Principal of Mazenod. Sadly, it is not merely from the Principalship from which Tony is retiring, but a great deal more!

I take this opportunity to recognise, celebrate and thank Tony for his remarkable and tireless contribution over his years of service in the teaching, administration, and leadership roles within our Mazenod College community.

Tony exemplifies St Eugene who was known as a man with a heart as big as the world for everyone. God Bless.

Fr Harry Dyer OMI Rector: 2021 - Current

Tony was appointed to Mazenod as I finished up as Rector in 2004. When I returned in retirement and as Chaplain in 2017, Tony was Deputy and later became Principal when Fr Fini became Oblate Provincial in 2019.

Tony fit in perfectly with our tradition of leaders at Mazenod College. He brought to his new responsibilities all of his teaching talents, already well honed, but retained his gentle courtesy towards the boys, colleagues and parents.

I admired his calm and balanced approach and fairness in decision making and challenging situations.

Tony showed an interest and, wherever possible, an involvement in the students’ progress in studies, certainly, but also in their sport and certainly their music performances and successes.

Tony led by example in the religious life and liturgies of the school and we Oblates have sincerely appreciated his belief in the Oblate charism shared here and his respectful friendly trust and cooperation with each of

There is undoubtedly a sense of gratitude and appreciation for his wonderful service to the whole Mazenod community. At the same time there is more than a whiff of nostalgia, not to mention regret, as we approach the final days of his Principalship at Mazenod College. He has left his mark on the fabric of the College in so many ways, administratively, pastorally, academically and, in particular, on the wonderful relationships he forged with both colleagues and students. He will be sorely missed.

For some 25 years, Tony served the Mazenod community in many guises, among them the role of teacher, Deputy Principal and, finally, as the first lay Principal. He proved to be an excellent choice and strove to uphold the vision and values of both the Oblate founders of the College and the ideals of the Archdiocese.

It would not only be difficult, but also a tad unwise, to attempt to name the many different gifts and attributes that Tony brought to the task, but one can certainly mention among many admirable characteristics his balanced approach, unflappability, infectious good humour, and genuine humanity, not to mention outstanding pedagogy. As a former Rector it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the not infrequent times he saved me from myself!

May I at this time thank his wife Cathie for her great generosity and understanding in the many demands we made on herself and the family, more especially during the very demanding years of the Principalship. The success of the role was in many aspects, a great team effort.

Fr Patrick Moroney OMI Rector: 1984 - 1988 & 2002 - 2009

When Tony Coghlan applied for a teaching position at Mazenod College during Fr Kevin Davine’s time as Rector, I phoned a friend of mine, Fr Noel Kierce at Whitefriars College for some information. After all, Tony Coghlan was a past student of Whitefriars College, and having graduated from university had taken up a position at his old College. Fr Noel’s advice was ‘offer him the position. He is first class and needs to have experiences beyond his old College.’

Tony has indeed proved himself first class. As a teacher, coordinator, Deputy Principal and currently, as Principal, he has excelled as a professional in all these roles. I would just make the following points: • •

As a person of faith, he treated all members of the community, both staff and students, with justice and charity.

He has become a person of the spirit of St Eugene. I remember an incident when he had been challenged by a difficult parent. In explaining his handling of the situation he said, ‘this is how we Oblates do this.’

I found that when Tony was handling situations with students, that he had the gift of getting to the heart of the problem, and that if punishment was a consequence, he maintained the respect of the person involved.

In recent years during Tony’s time as Principal, I have had the privilege of being on the College Executive Team. He is a listener. He is a man of vision and action. He is a leader of a team, but also a genuine member of the team.

There would be many members of staff who could share memories of Tony’s care for them in the difficult times in their lives.

Tony will be remembered for the many great contributions he has made to the Mazenod community. However, what stands out for me is his genuine humility and his ability to laugh at himself if he has made a mistake.

It is with a profound sense of gratitude that I share with you all my appreciation at the support and guidance that I was shown by Mr Tony Coghlan from the time I arrived at Mazenod in 2002, but more specifically during 2010-2015 when I was Rector of Mazenod.

From the outset Tony has always been loyal, supportive, trustworthy and a person of great integrity whenever it was needed. His wise counsel helped me make fewer mistakes than I otherwise would have made and he was certainly one of the people who could provide timely and accurate feedback. Tony shared his many talents and character with a wide range of people and was a consistent and steady influence on many of the ideas and projects that were initiated during that time.

I would often come with many, many ideas and Tony would listen patiently and then gently steer me in the direction that he thought best and I always believed that he had both the College and the Oblates’ interests at his heart. His support and care of students during my years at Mazenod was exemplary and he handled very complex and delicate issues with sensitivity and goodness.

I give thanks to Tony and his family for the years of dedicated service to Mazenod and its wider community.

His heart certainly beats true for the black, white and blue and our College community is stronger for it.

I believe that Tony will continue to thrive in these next chapters of his life and thank God for continuing to work through Tony in many wonderful ways.

Staff Farewells Maurice Lee Maurice Lee restarted at Mazenod in 2010. Restarted? I hear you ask – had he taught here before? Well, no, like a number of other staff he had been a student at the school. In fact, he was part of the initial intake of students back at the very start of the school. Since then, he had been teaching in a number of Government schools but was keen to return to the Alma Mater.

The first couple of years at any school is always tough, as you find your feet and become accepted and Maurice was no exception. He had mainly Senior Maths classes, but was lucky enough to be one of the select group to be given a Year 10 Further Maths class. To top it off, it was a very big class and this baptism of fire produced a few more grey hairs, but a more mature and well-rounded teacher as well.

For the last seven years Maurice has taken on the important role of managing the timetable, which he has done extremely well, showing great compassion, patience and tact in balancing the needs of everyone – administration, staff and students.

So, like the Romans, what has Maurice done for us?

Experience: with over 30 years of classroom experience Maurice has brought a depth of knowledge and a variety of skills and practices to the school for the benefit of the staff and students.

Team work: Maurice is great to work with as he is a real team player. He is happy to work with anyone and is always willing to do his share of the workload. His calm, relaxed manner puts both staff and students at ease.

Sense of humour: Being a Richmond supporter means that this is almost a prerequisite and enables Maurice to laugh at himself and with (not at) others. The students in particular recognise this and greatly appreciate it.

Caring and kind: To be a good teacher you must be tough at times but always caring and kind to all you come in contact with. In the 10 years I have known him I have never heard Maurice say anything nasty or vitriolic about any one – except the teams that beat Richmond. This positivity enabled him to get the best out of his students. He was always up for a chat and a quick trip down for a coffee and ‘in-service’, especially if he knew you were having a tough time.

So what next for the great man? In fabulous news for the local coffee shops and wineries, Maurice and his wife AnneMarie are building a new house, complete with stylish ‘man cave’, which Maurice claims is for the grandchildren – yeah, sure mate! We wish him all the best for his retirement and his move to the regions .

Matt Rowland Matt made an inauspicious start at Mazenod in 2014, preferring an incognito approach in the safe confines of his office, rather than the jungle of the staffroom. However, his inner-tiger emerged as he became comfortable with his surroundings and quickly developed into one of the most prolific corridor chatters and office visitors at Mazenod.

From a teaching perspective, the students have benefitted from Matt’s assured and confident manner in the classroom, imparting his wisdom on economic policy, management strategies, finance, algebra and Australian slang. It was in the area of student wellbeing that Matt thrived, as the Year 11 Assistant Coordinator, then Year 8 Coordinator, before taking on the role of Dean of Junior School. Rather than pouring fuel on a fire, Matt excelled in practically assisting students on a daily basis, working closely with staff, students and parents so that situations were calmly resolved.

While many were impressed with the military precision of his Junior School assemblies, Matt’s coaching expertise will also be missed, with an undefeated ACC Cricket team. With a refusal to be hamstrung by a lack of AFL knowledge, he also created one of the hardest tackling Year 8 AFL sides in the history of Mazenod. Similarly, Matt was always ready to don the khaki and raft along a freezing river in the rain, to assist the Outdoor Education program.

Socially, Matt will need to find a new couch full of friends to keep him up to date with the minutiae of College life.

However, his larger-than-life presence will be sorely missed in the staffroom. As co-President of the Staff Association, Matt was responsible for the organisation of many social events, providing staff with a new found love of edamame.

Much like the Mazenod College Guiding Principle that he co-wrote, Matt has been “continuously burning bright” in sharing his talents at Mazenod. We wish him all the best as he, Cath and Thomas make the move to peaceful Canberra where Marist College will be the beneficiaries of his teaching, leadership and Netflix recommendations.

Clare Caldwell Naomi Grima On behalf of the nurses, we farewell Naomi Grima as a permanent member of staff. Naomi joined the Mazenod Nursing team in 2019 and has been a highly valued and respected staff member. She has enriched the department with her knowledge and outgoing personality which will be sorely missed. Naomi will continue with her job in the Day Unit at Knox Private Hospital and will remain at Mazenod on a casual basis. We thank Naomi for her contributions to the College and wish her all the best for her future.

Mira Strengers It is with mixed emotions that I am writing this tribute for an extremely dear friend and wonderful colleague, Mira Strengers. Whilst I am delighted that Mira is about to embark upon a well-earned retirement, I am sad to think about the future generations of Mazenod students who will be denied the joy of having Mira as their teacher.

Mira came to Mazenod College in August 1988. Throughout her years at the College, Mira has taught English, History and Politics. As someone who has worked closely beside Mira over these years, I can attest to her total professionalism and care for all of her students. Mira is an authentic and compassionate person. Throughout our many years of team-teaching History, Politics and English together, Mira has been the ideal colleague. We have been able to share our resources and bounce ideas off each other, so that our students have benefitted from our shared teaching.

Within our College community, Mira has always treated everyone, staff, students, parents, and the wider College community with the utmost dignity and respect. In terms of her classroom practice, she is the consummate professional, and is always keen to support those students who require additional academic assistance.

I know that Mira’s passion for life emerges from her love of travel. Each year, as I hear Mira tell me about her love of her Year 7 History classes, I know that her students are so blessed to hear about Mira’s personal experiences around Rome and Pompeii. In the past, Mira’s Year 9 History students were the beneficiaries of Mira’s passion for Federation and the impact of Great Britain and the Westminster System upon Australia’s heritage. When we taught Year 11 English together, I remember how we teamtaught and showed our students the Italian film, “Cinema Paradiso”, in our efforts to inject European culture into our young men who were tasked with writing a review on this film. More recently, Mira’s Year 9 English students have learned about Shakespeare’s birthplace, as Mira has taught the students the entirety of Shakespeare’s classical play, “Romeo and Juliet”.

Without question, Mazenod College has been the beneficiary of having a person of outstanding moral principles on our staff. Mira is a genuine and beautiful person. Mazenod College’s loss is going to be the wider community’s gain. As Mira embarks upon the next stage of her life’s journey, may Almighty God bless her and her husband, George, with all His love and joy!

Tina Giacco Denise Tan Amidst the significant change of shifting to remote learning, Mazenod welcomed Denise Tan, a pre-service teacher, to the Learning Diversity Centre. Denise initially came to us in 2020 as a Learning Support Officer, but assumed additional responsibilities in 2021 as part of the Tutoring Program.

Denise’s introduction to us under such difficult circumstances can certainly be considered a baptism of fire, but true to her form, she took it in her selfless stride, ensuring the needs of students were always placed before her own, as they continued their learning both onsite and from remote locations. In particular, Denise found innovative ways to make learning fun and engaging for our students with additional needs and challenges, positively connecting them in learning with their teachers and peers.

Those who have had the pleasure to meet or work with Denise, know that she has an innate ability to find the magic in the mundane, both personally and professionally. Denise, though your departure is tinged with sadness, given that we are losing an exceptional colleague, we know that you will absolutely thrive in the next chapter of your life. We wish you all the best as a graduate teacher at St. Peter’s College in Cranbourne.

Athena Beshir Fr Giancarlo Iollo OMI It is with much sadness that we farewell Fr Giancarlo Iollo OMI who is leaving the College to take up a position as assistant priest at St Kieran’s in Moe. Fr Giancarlo has been a member of the Oblate community at Mazenod, Victoria for nearly two years and in that time he has become a favourite with the students.

His enthusiasm and willingness to involve himself in camps, activities and liturgies has certainly been valued and appreciated. I am sure that all who were present in the Oblate Hall during this year’s Mission Action Day would remember the excitement that Father Giancarlo generated as he guided the entire student body in his world famous cheer.

While Fr Giancarlo has spent all his working life in schools across the world, his time at St Kieran’s will give him a greater experience of life in Australia and prepare him for other duties that he will undertake as a newcomer to the Australian Provence.

Staff Farewells Yoshi Fujii Following a 23-year career at Mazenod College, Mr Yoshi Fujii, commonly known as Fujii sensei by his students, has decided to trade his Japanese classroom for countless adventures in the great outdoors.

changing curriculum. John, already a highly experienced IT teacher, came to the College with a wealth of teaching and curriculum-development experience having taught at several schools including Padua College and Yeshivah College.

Fujii sensei was instrumental in forging a relationship with our sister school, Daisho Gakuen, in Osaka, Japan, having accompanied his students on five Japanese study tours since 2001. In addition, he hosted Daisho College staff and students on numerous occasions over the years, assuming the role of tour guide, Uber driver and on the odd occasion, Japanese interpreter at Monash Medical Centre.

John served as the faculty Coordinator for 17 years, and as new curriculum was introduced at both a state and national level it was John who navigated the Digital Technologies faculty through all those changes, ensuring that our students were introduced to the latest and most interesting content. John strongly felt that students should learn through fun-oriented activities that saw them problem solving and constructing. He introduced STEM Robotics to the College, a course that regularly saw students’ robots invading the corridors, solar cars racing in the quadrangle, and most recently students coding drones to fly around the classroom.

True to his Japanese cultural heritage, Fujii sensei was passionate about sharing his insights and culinary skills with his students. He will be fondly remembered for his sushi sessions on the cricket pavilion balcony during Year 8 Languages week. These skills were also witnessed by his fellow colleagues in the staff room at lunch time where Yoshi resembled a ‘master chef’ in action on the College stove. However, he rarely allowed himself a leisurely lunch, as conversation classes always beckoned.

The consummate professional, Yoshi is respected by students, teachers and his fellow VCAA assessors. His reputation for the outstanding results of his VCE students was earned through sheer hard work and commitment, evidenced in daily conversation sessions, both before and after school and during each break. His students are incredibly grateful for his support and encouragement.

Of all his achievements at the College, including his mastery of new technologies, Yoshi was mostly proud of becoming an accomplished teacher.

Whilst we will miss his gentle manner, optimistic outlook and subtle humour, Yoshi’s name will remain synonymous with our thriving Japanese department.

We wish him, Desma and their two children all the best for the adventures that lie ahead. May they be filled with good health, safe travels, long walks, and an abundance of cross-country ski trips.

Joanne Noone John Wright Fr Moroney once said, “I need good IT people who will stay at the College”. In 2004 John Wright joined the Digital Technologies faculty at Mazenod College and over the next 18 years taught and coordinated an ever-

John redesigned Junior programming to encourage students to develop their coding and digital media skills through the creation of computer games, and when Digital Technologies was introduced at Year 7, John advocated the introduction of the Microbit to teach students coding proving how technology makes our daily lives easier.

In the classroom, John is a warm teacher who passionately demonstrated and passed on his love of technology by example, and with a mix of his unique humour. As a VCE teacher, John guided and prepared numerous “Information Processing and Management” and “Data Analytics” students through SACs in their preparation for the final exam.

Given his love of sports, it was no surprise that John quickly gravitated to Volleyball once he arrived at Mazenod. John coached teams to 13 gold medals in ACC Volleyball. In 2008, he coached the Under 14 Mazenod Volleyball team to a national gold medal, and also introduced Beach Volleyball to the School Sports program.

For the last 18 years, we in the Digital Technologies faculty have been fortunate to have John as colleague, mentor, friend and brother. His advice is regularly sought, his humour is greatly appreciated and his company in the office will be greatly missed. After 18 years it would appear that Fr Moroney got what he was looking for.

I am honoured to present my first Chairman’s report for the Mazenodian. It is a privilege to be appointed to the Board and also named Chair, neither of which I take lightly. I am humbled to follow those great men who were my predecessors as Board Chair, especially Peter Le Grand after his exceptional 30-year commitment in this role.

2021 marked a change in focus for the Board, with a restructuring to provide focussed business and industry advice to the College leadership team. I thank the other new members of the Board for their support this year: Michael Curtis (Deputy Chair), Jane Cowan, Herb Fischbacher, Laurie Langford, and Brendan Welsford.

The new Board has experience across education, finance, law, engineering, construction, OH&S, risk and compliance, and project management.

I also thank the ex officio Board members: Tony Coghlan (Principal), Fr Harry Dyer OMI (Rector), June Stewart (Finance Manager), Michelle Symss (Development Manager), Joanne Noone (Dean of Staff), and Aylene Robinson (Executive Assistant) for their support in helping the Board develop a new identity and to understand College operations.

Special thanks to Fr Christian Fini OMI, who in his role as Provincial is representing the Oblates on the Board during this transition period. Fr Fini’s insights, advice and dedication to his Oblate ministry have been highly valued by the Board. Finally, Parish Priests of the Association of Canonical Administrators make up the remainder of the Board: Fr Eric Alleaume (St John Vianney’s), Fr John Dowling (St Leonard’s), Fr Andrew McCarter (St Peter’s), Fr Kaz Trawicki (Good Shepherd), and Fr Joseph Truong Nguyen (St Joseph’s). I thank all of them for their support this year.

Congratulations to every one of them, and their families, on exhibiting such resilience and persistence. Thank you to the College teaching and support staff for their capacity to respond to the ever-changing circumstances with such fluidity, and for always considering the interests and wellbeing of the students.

This pandemic has resulted in financial hardship for many people and sectors. The education sector is not immune to such problems, but thanks to prudent financial management by the College leadership team, the previous Board and the Oblates, Mazenod is well placed to emerge in a relatively good position.

The Board has established five portfolios of operation, through which it will provide advice and support to the College: Faith and Charism; Learning and Teaching; Legal; Finance; and Capital Planning and Infrastructure.

In 2021, by virtue of key ongoing projects, the Board primarily focussed on the latter two portfolios. It is an exciting time in the College’s history, with previously planned capital improvements to various parts of the campus commencing in 2021. These highly anticipated facility upgrades will be one disruption actually welcomed by staff and students, as the end result will be enjoyed for many years.

Whilst the Board has worked with Tony Coghlan for only one year, I am certain that all members express gratitude for his role as the first lay Principal of the College. Tony’s outstanding leadership over the last three years has ensured that Mazenod College is well placed to move into its next phase under a new Principal in 2022.

The Board looks forward to meeting the challenges and embracing the opportunities ahead in 2022 and we are confident that we can contribute to Mazenod College rising to the occasion once again.

The prolonged impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in 2021 being every bit as challenging as 2020. For the 1,448 young men at the College this year, it has meant disruption and further remote learning.

Parents’ & Friends’ Association Fathers’ Committee In 2021, the structure of the Fathers group changed from an Association, with office bearers, to a Committee, a less-formal structure. We were fortunate to attend a presentation earlier in the year, where Tony Coghlan introduced the new Rector, Fr Harry Dyer OMI and also the new Chairman of the Board, Dr Eugene Fredricks.

We were given the chance to promote the Fathers’ Committee and to mingle with new, predominantly Year 7, parents. I, along with some Fathers’ Committee members I was able to meet a number of families and took the opportunity to invite some fathers to upcoming meetings.

Due to the subsequent lockdowns imposed by the State Government, a number of planned activities did not go ahead. Despite this the College has been very supportive and innovative with their use of technology.

For example, this year’s Father’s Day Mass was livestreamed since group gatherings were not permitted.

Earlier in the year the Fathers’ Committee had car stickers produced with the intention to sell stickers to families of the College to raise some funds for the Committee. Due to pandemic-based disruptions, we were not able to proceed with this activity. We hope to pursue this once the students can return to school.

I wish to thank the College for their continued support to the Fathers’ Committee and their interest to grow the greater school community. Special thanks to the regular and also new fathers that make the time to attend the Fathers’ Committee meetings and to chip in when able during our activities. Your dedication and support is much appreciated.

In these difficult and challenging times we live under, we wish the very best to the students as they adjust to online learning. To the school staff and teachers who have had to adapt and continue their jobs supporting the students, thank you. Finally, to the families, some of whom are facing very stressful times, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mothers’ Committee On Friday May 7, the Mother’s Association held their Annual Mother’s Day Dinner, which this year took place at the Mulgrave Country Club. The event was sold out, with many ladies missing out due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A wonderful night was had by all that attended, both past, current and new College mums. There were raffle prizes, live music and a panel which included Ms Tina Giacco, Mrs Margaret McCulloch and Mrs Margaret O’Sullivan who reminisced about the Mothers’ Association days of old.

Thank you to our MC Gerard McCulloch, a Mazenod Old Collegian, who is a renowned comedy writer, for giving up his time for the evening.

We would also like to thank our generous sponsors who provided our major raffle prizes on the night, MercedesBenz Glen Waverley, Heart to Heart Flowers, Mulgrave Country Club, Kings Upholstery and The Last Piece.

Thank you again to all that attended the evening and we look forward to another successful event next year.

Parents’ and Friends’ Association Over the last few years the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Committees, have held events and raised funds to donate to enhance various programmes. The most recent donation is $4000 to the new Mazenod STEM Facility, which will purchase consumables such as 3D printing filaments and wood and plastics for the CO2 laser cutter. The 3D Printers and Laser Cutters currently service Year 8 and 9 Design and Technology Programmes as well as Year 10 to 12 Visual Communication and Design. STEM hardware systems allow students to produce 3D prototypes created from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.

Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time, we appreciate and value the importance of these initiatives. We look forward to seeing you in 2022.

Old Collegians’ Association “All the world is a village”, and throughout this past year, this emphatic claim has been tangibly manifested by our Mazenod Old Collegians’ Association (MOCA).

Despite the restrictions on our ability to gather in person, we have utilised a number of electronic and communications devices in order to ensure that our connections as a united Old Boys’ Association have remained intact. Nevertheless, when opportunities prevailed, it was great to catch up in person with many of our Old Boys and their families.

This included having our Old Boy, Gerard McCulloch, speak at our Mother’s Day dinner this year. In presenting Gerard to our audience of predominantly mothers who are associated with our College, I recalled and described Gerard’s brilliant ability to make people laugh. When he was a student, I remembered that Gerard’s sharp wit and great oratory skills made him an excellent public speaker, as well as an actor in many of our College productions.

Furthermore, throughout this year, I had the privilege of working in the canteen at a few of the Panthers’ Football Club gatherings. It was great to see so many of our Old Boys supporting our young people as trainers, coaches, mentors and as grounds and canteen staff.

In fact, one of the greatest joys I experience as the Mazenod College Staff Liaison for MOCA is the wonderful opportunity that I have to share in the lives of our Mazenod Old Boys. I fervently believe that our Old Boys are a fundamental part of our College; they

are definitively part of the Mazenod College community for life. Irrespective of the situations involved, our Old Boys are always very welcome to contact me and to be in touch with MOCA. I encourage our Old Boys and their families to telephone us, write to us, or just visit us. I wish to remind our Old Boys that we are able to provide friendship, assistance, or even just be there to share a laugh and reminiscence about old times, as we tour the College together.

There are a plethora of situations in which I have the immense blessing and privilege of catching up with our Old Boys. For many of our Old Boys, this often involves providing references for employment or for other circumstances. At times, our Old Boys require connections with tradespeople, business or career opportunities. Moreover, it is delightful to hear about exciting and happy events that are happening in the lives of our Old Boys. Certainly, one of the greatest privileges that I derive from working with our Old Boys and their families is that I am often invited to share in some of the most significant experiences in their lives. These include being present with them, and journeying with them throughout their studies; career choices; the births of their children; baptisms and weddings. At other times, there are the difficulties of personal or family illnesses, tragedies, deaths and funerals. MOCA seeks to embrace and to accompany our Old Boys though their lives.

My heartfelt and sincere thanks to all of the MOCA Committee, and to all our Old Boys and their families for the profound blessing of being able to share in their lives. As our Mazenod College anthem exhorts us, may “our friendships formed here ever flourish and grow”.

Archives The Mazenod College Archives, via its amazing collection of photos, documents and artefacts, tells the story of how we have evolved into one of the major Catholic boys Secondary Colleges located in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Indeed, one of the items currently on display in the Archive is the cap worn by the current Bishop of Wagga Wagga, Bishop Mark Edwards OMI who attended the College in the early 1970s. After joining the Oblate congregation, Fr Mark Edwards also became the first former student ordained to the priesthood.

2021 has turned into another year that was severely disrupted by COVID-19 restrictions, however the flexibility of the Archive meant that we could continue our work remotely.

One of the projects undertaken during this period was the creation of the Mazenod College timeline which features images of significant events that have shaped the College from the early 1960s to the present day.

The timeline will be added to the history section of the College’s external website and will be a valuable tool for promotion to the wider community, as well as a resource for staff and students.

The Mazenod College Digital Archive was completely revamped with the new College branding and was customised to ensure that current staff and students could access its holdings. Moreover, a collection of colour slides taken by one of the parents at the Official

Opening and Blessing of Mazenod College by His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray OMI were uploaded onto this digital platform along with images of Mazenod College Duxes from 1993 onwards.

Information Management is another responsibility for the Archive which entails ensuring that the correct policies and procedures are followed in relation to the capture, retention, disposal and destruction of all records including those in digital format. This year, a project to digitise all the student records was commenced, which is the first step towards moving to a paperless office.

As part of a special Olympics feature, our social media posts highlighted the sporting achievements of past students, two of whom competed at this year’s Tokyo Olympics – Beach Volleyball player Damien Schumann (gold medallist 2018 Commonwealth Games) and middle-distance runner Jeff Riseley (competed at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics). National Hockey Team member Chris Ciriello was the first former student to win an Olympic medal when he won bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

Debating & Public Speaking

Debating is one of the last things I expected to be so heavily invested in at Mazenod. Since Year 7, I have been continually impressed by what heights the entire program has achieved. Through multiple major victories and a constant dedication towards fostering talents, participants continually hone their communication skills and ability to form ideas whilst enjoying team camaraderie.

Becoming Debating Captain and being able to help facilitate such an amazing program was a privilege and an honour, and despite all the words that I could put on this page, my gratitude and joy from this experience will never be able to be fully expressed.

This year, despite debating venues being shifted more often than Australia’s Prime Minister, Mazenod’s teams have managed to produce great results once again. Mazenod has become a constant feature at State finals, with our Year 12 team qualifying for the semi finals, placing them in the top four teams in the state. A notable success comes from our Year 9 students, whose enthusiasm resulted in two teams at their division.

One of these teams qualified for the playoffs, ensuring that the future of Mazenod debating looks brighter than ever. Notably, in the ACC Debating competition, our Year 10 debaters came first claiming a virtual pennant, a great accolade for the team. Our Year 9 team also came second in the Public Speaking division, once again demonstrating the strong showing of Mazenod’s future debaters.

This year also marked great success with training sessions for our Year 10, 11 and 12 teams. Working together to practice enabled all teams to learn from each other, and combining their talents and abilities allowed for a great resource to personally advance their debating strategies. More importantly, the environment also allowed members from different squads to interact with each other, allowing the fostering of connections between members, and solidifying the connections that debating at Mazenod forms.

One of the greatest things about debating is that it creates a sport-like culture. Teams face each other, working to concoct arguments

and rebuttals, to ultimately demonstrate the opposition’s case to be flawed and building oratory skills. Just like sport, you celebrate all the wins and you blame all the losses on the referee.

You want to keep playing as long as your team is there to support you and I have enjoyed working with every single member of my team. Every single person, who has or will debate, ultimately has contributed to the victories that the school has accrued, and continues to win in this field.

I would also like to thank the various teachers who have generously contributed their talents to help. Mr Spasic, Ms Fox, Mr Convery and Ms Giacco have personally been great coaches with supportive presences, but we thank the many teachers who have coached over the years across all year levels. Any debating report would be incomplete without mentioning, appreciating and respecting the gargantuan efforts always put in by Ms Caird, who is the heart and soul of the program. Without her, it is impossible for any Mazenod public speaker or debater to reach the heights that they do, we all have abounding gratitude for the great things she has done for us. Mr Harrington stepping in to assist in Ms Caird’s role in helping coordinate debating during lockdown’s difficult circumstances is also greatly appreciated, and his enthusiasm and energy were a massive help in keeping the teams going.

I would like to end with a quote championed by Ms Caird as the ultimate speech starter: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Obviously, Dickens never envisioned a pandemic-stricken world in his opening to A Tale of Two Cities, but it perfectly encapsulates what I appreciated the most about debating this year. In the midst of a bad situation, I was surrounded by good people, helping develop our abilities in something that is fun, and giving all of us something to keep striving for in such a bad time. I would say that is not bad for an activity where the worst injury one can suffer is a paper cut, wouldn’t you?

2021 saw the arrival of our new Rector, Fr Harry Dyer, who I know brings great talent to the school and his work with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate will no doubt enhance the charism of Mazenod.

I would like to wish Fr John Sherman a very successful and blessed time as Director of Vocations for the Oblate Order and we will miss his enthusiasm. I am grateful too to our Oblate clergy, Fr Eric, Fr Kevin, Fr Harry and Fr Giancarlo for their continued commitment to our school community.

We are, no doubt, living in very difficult and strange times. Our young men and staff find themselves back in remote learning and we acknowledge the difficulties this presents and our prayers are with those who are suffering at this time. I would like to acknowledge the great work done by staff who continually make huge efforts to enhance the learning experience of our boys.

It was a great delight that our Year 12 students had such a successful retreat in March when they accompanied their Coordinators and Homeroom

teachers to different venues for the two-day event. I would like to thank the outgoing team of the Faith and Charism office, Mr Joseph Moore and Mr Josh Rajasingam for their huge contributions over their many years of service.

I would like to extend a huge gratitude to the team in the Faith and Charism office, Mr Cristiano Grosso, Ms Tina Giacco, Ms Frances Sharrock and Ms Jacinta Girolami. I would also like to thank the Youth Ministry team, Anthony Bolling, Luke Schaefer and Adil Alveras who worked so well to foster all aspects of faith for the students and staff.

I also wish to thank all the year level conveners who work so hard to oversee the curriculum.

Our dynamic Religious Education curriculum serves our students with a deep academic understanding of our faith, beliefs and develops the charism of our school community. We are continually reviewing our curriculum through our teaching teams and we have introduced a very exciting new pathway in Year 11 called VCE VET Christian Ministry and Theology.

Thanks to all the staff, students and all in our community who continually support our work.

I sincerely thank my predecessor Mr Kyle Hoad who is an inspiring, faithful and professional leader and I thank him for his valuable guidance to me in my first year as Dean.

Prayer and Liturgy

This year has witnessed a vast array of opportunities for our entire College community to participate in faith experiences. These opportunities began with our traditional Inaugural Mass. Instead of our usual journey to St Patrick’s Cathedral in East Melbourne, this year saw the celebration of our Inaugural Mass in the Provence Centre at Mazenod. During this Mass, we welcomed our students, staff and families as we shared in the joy of installing Fr Harry Dyer as our College Rector. We also congratulated and welcomed our College Captain, Vice-Captains, Prefects and Junior School Captains during this Mass. Our Inaugural Mass gave us the opportunity to invoke Almighty God’s blessings upon our new academic year.

Our traditional Mission Action Day Liturgy occurred on Holy Thursday. During this Liturgy, we participated in journeying with Jesus Christ through the Stations of the Cross. These Stations were narrated from the perspective of our Blessed Virgin Mary. Each of the Stations of the Cross was explained by one of our female members of staff, who provided us with Mother Mary’s poignant reflections on her Son’s suffering. Throughout these reflections, our students enacted the “Via Dolorosa” of Jesus’ “Passion and Death”.

We celebrated our founder, St Eugene de Mazenod, with our traditional Founder’s Day Mass. This year, our Mass was celebrated on St Eugene’s actual feast day, the 21st of May. During this Mass, we gave thanks and praise to God for St Eugene de Mazenod and for the gift of the

Oblates of Mary Immaculate in our lives. During June, we had devotions in honour of the Feast of the “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus”. These devotions included the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and prayers of praise and of reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The brief interlude we had between lockdowns provided us with a delayed, yet, moving enrolment of some of our students with the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

This enrolment was preceded the previous week by a lunch gathering in which students learned about Our Lady’s request for people to wear the Scapular. For the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fr Harry blessed the icons of the Virgin Mary that are venerated by each of our year levels. These images of the Blessed Virgin Mary remind us of our Lady’s help, protection and love for us all.

Of course, our parents were acknowledged with Masses held in honour of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day this year. During these Masses, we prayed for our mothers and fathers, who are both living and deceased. We also acknowledged and prayed for those women and men who mentor and are significant persons in our lives. In addition, whether in person, or online, we have participated in the celebration of the Holy Mass each morning this year. I sincerely thank the Oblates of Mary Immaculate for the profound and immense gifts of our Masses, Sacraments, prayers, and for their pastoral witness and ministry to us all.

When I first met Tony, he arrived as a youthful, fresh-faced young man who commenced his journey at Mazenod College as our Year 11 Coordinator. As someone who has worked closely with Tony ever since his first day in our College, I have been blessed by the opportunity to witness Tony’s wonderful and inspiring dedication, commitment and presence in our College. Over the years, Tony has taught Mathematics to our Years 11 and 12 students, and moved from Year 11 Coordinator to our Deputy Principal, Acting Principal, and finally, over the last three years, our Principal.

The hallmarks of Tony’s passion and commitment to our College have been his immense compassion, care and respectful and diligent nature. Tony’s boundless energy, industrious nature and tireless work ethic are phenomenal and we are its beneficiaries. In addition, his approachability and open-door policy have meant that every single person knows that their voice will be acknowledged and that they will be given a fair hearing.

As both Deputy Principal and Principal, Tony’s commitment to our staff, students and their families is beyond compare. Amongst these activities, I know that Tony always visited every single Year Level Retreat, as well as, our Outdoor Education Camps, Music Camps, Drama Presentations, Musical Performances, Artistic Events, and Old Boys’ Functions. In his first year as Year 11 Coordinator, Tony handwrote a personalised thank you note to all of us who worked alongside him in raising funds for Red Cross Sunday. Moreover, his friendly and cheerful nature made him an excellent colleague and friend as we accompanied our students to the World Youth Day Celebrations in Sydney, in 2008. Tony has been an excellent ambassador for us all on the College’s overseas immersion trips, amongst which, included Japan and China.

Whenever I have received news about the joys, difficulties, adversities and sadness faced by our students, staff, families and our Old Boys, Tony has been a telephone call away. He is always prompt to help, totally compassionate, considerate and supportive. Nothing is too much trouble. I can attest to innumerable situations when I have called him and told him that someone in our College community required help. Tony has always responded with generosity, kindness, compassion and respect.

It is extremely difficult for me to encapsulate what Tony Coghlan means to me and to the entire College community. Over the past twenty-six years, Tony has been encouraging, innovative, collegial, trustworthy, honest, persistent, determined, patient, motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic. He is a man of the utmost integrity and authenticity. He epitomises and embodies our Catholic Christian values. This is manifested in Tony’s total commitment to his Catholic Faith, to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, to the Oblate Charism and to us all. He is truly a model Mazenod Man. He is an awesome colleague and friend!

I wish to pay tribute to Tony’s beautiful family. His commitment to us all is assisted by and thanks to the generosity of his beautiful wife, Cathie and their boys, Sam and Ben. We all appreciate their many sacrifices. When Tony first came to Mazenod, Tony and Cathie’s eldest son, Sam, had not even commenced primary school. I can vividly recall Sam proudly telling me that his Grade Prep teacher’s name was Kylie. They were on a first-name basis at his school. Younger brother, Ben, allowed me to have running races with him. He always won! Now, both boys are wonderful young men. Sam is married to Maria, and Ben’s partner is Tilly. Along with Cathie, the rest of the family, Sam, Ben, Maria, Tilly and Tony’s Mum, Marj, have all been an integral part of Tony’s journey at Mazenod thus far. On behalf of us all, I wish to acknowledge and thank Cathie and their family for their friendship, care, generosity and sacrifices. The Coghlans are a beautiful family!

Commerce Commerce

For the Commerce faculty it has been an exciting year despite the learning challenges. Student numbers undertaking a Commerce subject this year continued to grow, and subject selection numbers for 2022 show a continuing trend for future growth. The ongoing interest in Commerce based subjects has seen the school add two new subjects to our subject offerings in 2022.

From 2022, VCE Studies will include an ATAR Pathway and a Vocational Pathway. Mazenod College and the Commerce faculty have identified the need for a more practical, handson Commerce subject to complement its VCE offerings of Business Management, Accounting, Economics and Legal Studies. In 2022, the College has expanded Commerce subject offerings to include VCE VET Small Business & Innovation. The subject can be chosen as part of an ATAR pathway or a Vocational pathway, and has been designed for students looking for a subject that is more practical in nature. Whether wanting to run your own business, join the workforce or graduate to further studies, VCE VET Small Business & Innovation could be the subject to provide you with the practical experience and skills needed to send you on to a career of your choice.

Our Year 10 students in 2022, now have the opportunity to study a Commerce Enhancement subject as part of a “fast track” to VCE Commerce subjects, to bring Commerce pathways into line with other Humanities subjects. The subject will consist of enhanced studies in both Accounting and Business Management, with the opportunity for students to accelerate into a Unit 3 & 4 subject in Year 11. The enhancement subject in Year 10 allows students to access important VCE content from Units 1 & 2 to best prepare them for accelerated studies in Year 11.

In other news around the faculty this year, the much loved “Business Week” made a return with Year 11 business students experiencing real-life business simulations as part of their Business Management Unit 2 studies. It was fantastic to see the programme relaunched this year and we are hoping the programme will expand to include Year 10 Commerce subjects in 2022.

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to thank the tireless efforts of the Commerce team during this tumultuous time. Remote learning often involves thinking “outside the box” and anything asked of the team was never too hard and always met with a smile. Thank you for your ongoing support.

This year we have welcomed two new staff members to the department. Karen Ansell commenced as the Food Technician assisting Kate Sanford with the Food Technology program.

She has worked above and beyond her role to ensure students can create a range of healthy and engaging recipes. Scott Cunningham has assumed the role of Workshop Technician, his hard work and organisational skills have allowed teachers and students to create quality practical projects in a safe and clean working environment.

This year marked the opening of the new Mazenod STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lab. The new CO2 Laser Cutter and 3D Printers have integrated well into the Design and Technology programs with students using 3D software and Visual Arts software to create a range of interesting design solutions. A big thank you to our newly appointed STEM Technician, Peter Saaksjarvi, for his hard work and dedication.

Although circumstances prevented Year 8 and 9 Design and Technology students from completing as much practical work as would normally be possible, students took the opportunity to master their design skills using CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. Year 8 students were able to create intricate designs of their pencil box and drag car project, and thanks to their hard

work on campus were able to complete these projects successfully. Year 9 students were able to successfully design and create a wooden toolbox, using the CO2 laser cutter to engrave a personalised decal onto the project.

This year has included an array of experiences for students studying Food Technology in Years 8, 9 and 10, including a combination of both school and home-based cooking opportunities.

At school, an edible garden was established that allowed students to prepare meals from ‘paddock to plate’. New equipment such as chef’s torches and pasta machines broadened the students’ skills and the introduction of a production-based Year 10 exam that required students to design a morning tea platter for staff proved to challenge students’ creativity and organisational abilities.

Establishment of the maz_chef Instagram page has allowed for achievements in Food Technology to be shared with the Mazenod community, showcasing the zest, teamwork and perseverance of so many students.

A big thank you to Rimma Campos for coordinating the ACC Art Exhibition entrants. The Design and Technology department was able to showcase some of its best work to the public and other ACC schools. Well done to all the students who participated.

Digital Technology

As technology continues to permeate our society in an ever-increasing way, Mazenod College continues to develop its Digital Technology curriculum to meet the future needs of our students. The comments from the students outline the wide and varied activities undertaken in the Digital Technology classes this year.

VCE IT - Data Analytics / Software Development 3&4 Our first introduction to the Mazenod IT department was through Year 9 Green Energy Robotics, where we discovered how to merge software and hardware to overcome problems.

The following year, in Year 10 Software Development, we learned the foundations of coding through Visual Basic, which culminated in the creation of our own adventure game.

In Software Development Unit 3 & 4, we further developed our understanding of computers and cybersecurity through more technical definitions and understandings. Finally, we put our skills into practice by creating an actual program for clients to use. This year, in Data Analytics, we learned the process of analysing data and creating subsequent visualizations through tools such as Excel and Access. Overall, Mazenod’s wide range of IT courses are a great introduction to the world of computing as they provide an engaging and applicable experience.

Ben Chmielewski & Matthew Nield (Year 12) VCE VET - Creative & Digital Media 1&2 Year 11 Creative & Digital Media in 2021 was a big learning experience for us all. We enjoyed developing our knowledge on the many applications within the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. We used Photoshop to create posters and we studied the development of film with Premiere Pro. We finished the year with creating a website through Dreamweaver.

Year 10 IT - Software Development Year 10 Software Development was an interesting introduction into the world of programming. At the start of the year, we began to learn Visual Basic, and have been learning new skills throughout this year. We started with learning programming conventions and other basic skills, and we have slowly been learning new things in Visual Basic, culminating in creating a text-based adventure game. Overall, Software Development was very enjoyable and engaging.

Jared Wigley (Year 10) Year 9 IT - Software Development (Games) During this year in Software Development, we were able to learn how to do simple coding using the software, Scratch. Unlike other classes, Software Development was not affected during Online Learning. As we neared the end of Semester 1, we enjoyed making our own games using elements studied across the entire Semester.

Jake D’Rozario (Year 9) Year 7 Digital Technology I believe Digital Technology is a great and exciting subject at Mazenod College because Digital Technology allows the creative, expressive or even just average student of Mazenod College to express themselves in various ways using websites and art, which can be great for building up or enhancing careers and abilities.

Alastair Caciolo (Year 7)

Year 7 was the first time we were exposed to sophisticated, extended writing, having the TEEL structure drilled into us through the confronting historical fiction of The Boy in Striped Pyjamas and the more uplifting Pankration. Attempting for the first time to express our points of view in three paragraphs amounting to a 700 word composition.

If there was one word to describe the Year 8 English course it would be… packed. Starting with The Dons, we explored the difficulties of being an Australian teenager. We then wrapped the year by exploring the dystopian society of The Giver. This was also the year students had to present two orals, on a sport and one on family traditions.

Year 9 explored the nuances of human nature, from the intriguing philosophical quandaries of the future that awaits humanity in I, Robot, to the timeless exploration of man’s inhumanity in The Lord of the Flies. These newly broadened horizons of the cohort were then pit against each other in age old debates like the death penalty in Australia and the price of public transport. While the Year 9 Literature elective classes enjoyed the opportunity to delve into Of Mice and Men. Year 10 was a turning point and a moment of growth for many students. For English Enhancement classes, students were given a taste of Literature, English Language and mainstream English.

The rags to riches bildungsroman of Great Expectations and the thrilling stories of ambition

in Julius Caesar and The Godfather cemented our appreciation of what good writing looks like, all topped with a crash course in the history of the English language and its conventions.

Meanwhile, the Year 10 mainstream students took an international trip to Cambodia via First They Killed My Father and the deep South of America via Mississippi Burning and To Kill A Mockingbird.

Meanwhile, the Literature elective classes relished the opportunity to study classics such as Twelve Angry Men and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Year 11 English marched through Macbeth’s “vaulting ambition” into the dichotomy between the glamour of the Roaring Twenties in The Great Gatsby and the harsh reality of the American Dream in Death of a Salesman. Meanwhile, the literature students enjoyed the classics of A Christmas Carol and Othello before analysing the messages behind one of the best movies of all time, Casablanca. The English Language students also had the opportunity to study the development of language, communication and the way in which language gradually develops and changes over time.

English

As we reach the end of our schooling, it is time for a nostalgic look back at the highlights of our English journey at Mazenod.

The culmination of our Year 12 English, Literature and Language studies at Mazenod has been a rollercoaster: from weekly essays to morning tea, all set against a backdrop of uncertain lockdowns and inconsistent sleep schedules. It was all worth it however, and we are grateful to all of the wonderful teachers in the English department for allowing us to explore new depths of meaning throughout our texts, and for guiding us through the rigours of VCE despite all of the uncertainty.

Enhancement

Enhancement at Mazenod is a journey laden with possibility. Each year, our high achieving students are identified and invited to undertake Enhancement pathways, relevant to their interests and abilities, that will push them to discover and achieve their true potential. Talented teachers in every department inject their passion for learning into courses designed to challenge and provoke students who must rise to the occasion.

Happily, 2021 has treated our Enhancement students very well, despite its fraught context.

Across the board, our fresh Year 7 intake has proven precociously talented. In General Enhancement, the young men of Mazenod did their school proud in battling other gifted and talented cohorts at the remotely-delivered Da Vinci Decathlon, in a series of academic and cognitive contests. Their journey for the year ends soon with a great test of their creativity through the Shared Stories anthology task.

Meanwhile, Mr Moore’s Enhancement History groups have been busy laying the groundwork for sterling results in the future through their studies of Alexander the Great and Richard the Lionheart.

A very special congratulations to Matthew Curran, who achieved a High Distinction at the Australian History Competition, in which the Year 9 Enhancement History cohort competed. The cohort, as a whole, achieved excellent results,

compared to their Victorian and Australian peers.

Mr Tranter’s General Enhancement classes in Years 8 and 9 have also been very busy, cultivating the abilities of our most talented writers and creatives, of whom we expect great success in the years to come. We are pleased to end our report for 2021 with the words of Ryan Pereira of Year 9, the writer of a brilliant research essay on the cultural impact of Bob Marley, who describes his experience of writing it in Enhancement History this year: “The research essay was unique in the sense that the topic was self-chosen and that the research itself was completed individually. The research essay assisted in presenting a particular opinion on a topic which we were interested in and helped us to educate an audience about it. Overall, Enhancement History in Semester 1 was a great and unique experience that allowed for many skills in analysing and research to be gained as well as confidence in learning, in general.”

For many of our Junior and Senior students, the next leg of the journey now looms, as Enhancement gears up for a busy, productive and enjoyable 2022.

home would restrict practical lessons, however this was not the case. We participated in a flexibility practical as well as an F45 session to help understand different training methods.

Despite it being hard work, it was extremely fun.

I recommend any student to choose Health & Fitness or Physical Education in Year 10. It mixes learning in the classroom and learning while enjoying fun, practical components.

Matteo Cantavenera (Year 10)

Theory may not seem exciting, but it is a great way to learn about important things your body needs.

We learnt about the benefits of good nutrition, physical activity and sleep. We also discussed a very important subject for us as we grow up, in learning about types of drugs and how to help somebody who has been involved with drugs.

I enjoyed Year 8 Health & Physical Education so much that I have chosen Sports Science and Physical Education as my electives for next year.

Aiden Ryan (Year 8)

VCE Physical Education 2021 was a mixed bag of emotions. One week, we were at Monash University completing a HIIT session at their first-class facilities. The next week, stuck in lockdown at home, completing tasks on our laptops. All practicals, such as the METS Performance Consulting visiting Mazenod, strongly complements theory done on paper.

This allows students to put knowledge into practice, which amplifies understanding of key topics. Although our amusing practicals at school came to a swift end, our favourite journey to the local cafe to grab a cheeky HSP and the intense rivalries in Smashball will be missed.

Year 10 Health & Physical Education Electives While at school, we played a game of International Rules for our Training Program Assignment. My team dominated, with the helping hand of my six goals. The match was filmed, so we got to watch the replay and count our statistics. We also wore GPS devices, which gave us data on distance covered and our top speeds. Next year, I am looking forward to studying VCE PE and Health and Human Development.

Physiological and psychological content we learnt about can be implemented into our own daily routines. It also provides great insight into how elite athletes and trainers enhance performance in a variety of sports. This can be translated into potential university courses for many students.

Year 8 Health & Physical Education The Year 8 practical activities such as football codes, racquet sports, striking sports and fitness testing were all very enjoyable this year in Health & Physical Education. The fitness task we did was interesting as we learnt about fitness components and how to improve them. As well as lessons at school, there was an excursion to Rush HQ. This was a highlight of the year.

Humanities

There has been so much to savour in the Humanities Faculty over the last twelve months.

Below are some of the highlights: • Another year of wonderful VCE performances, including: three of our students attaining perfect scores of 50; the VCE History Revolutions results ranking the College third in Victoria; while the VCE Geography class attained seven scores above 40, placing them fifth in the State • Welcoming Mrs Claire Russo and Ms Lauren Oliver to the faculty – both have taught History this year • Managing to run successful Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Geography field trips • Daniel Plowman being recognised for his outstanding VCE History Revolutions result with a prestigious Premier’s Award • Matthew Curran and Adyn Duong of Year 9 being awarded High Distinctions in the Australian History Competition • One of the Year 11 VCE Politics students, Rion Morgan, winning Hotham Writing Prize 2021 for Secondary Schools. Rion wrote about mental health in modern day Australia, and was presented by Ms Clare O’Neil MP with a bursary for $250.

Finally, the faculty would like to extend a fond farewell to Mrs Mira Strengers, who is retiring at the end of this year after many decades of teaching service. As a passionate advocate of classical History, her students will undoubtedly miss her engaging Socratic teaching methodology and deep subject knowledge.

Nick Young Head of Faculty Amidst the harsh reality of lockdowns during this culminating year of high school, my study of VCE History Revolutions and VCE Global Politics has emerged as a clear highlight. Mazenod’s Humanities program has not only broadened my outlook on life and offered countless insights on the world, it has also taught me how to think on my own two feet; a skill that I will definitely cherish in the outside world. A particular high point of VCE History Revolutions has been our study of the Russian Revolution — the exciting twists and turns can be likened to that of a semester-long movie that just keeps getting better.

Whilst History has taught me about the past, and in doing so, prepared me for the future, Global Politics has equipped me with refreshing, engaging, and modern perspectives about key issues throughout the world: the dangers of terrorism or the existential threat of climate change. The superior quality of the teaching and the value of the content makes Humanities a nobrainer. If you are a young Nodder keen for an awesome final year at the College, the Humanities program will ‘clutch up’ for you.

Jerome Lawrence (Year 12) Studying History and Politics has been a challenging, yet rewarding, way of exploring the inner workings of the world we live in and the people and movements which formed it. Whilst the dynamic nature of Politics certainly contrasts the more static nature of History, these subjects go hand in hand — with both shaping the other.

Understanding the quest for liberty sought during the American Revolution was only enhanced by the study of liberalism and its principles in Politics.

Increasingly, these subjects have allowed me to develop key analytical thinking skills, with the critical evaluation of competing historical interpretations and political theories providing us as students with the freedom to expand our own perceptions of the world. More than any other subjects, the study of the Humanities is centred on open discussion and debate, meaning there truly is never a dull moment.

Nathanial Louey (Year 11) In my time at Mazenod, I have had the privilege of undertaking Humanities studies at the College, particularly VCE History Revolutions and VCE Global Politics. Both subjects allowed me to engage with content to better understand the structures of the world around me, whether it was current affairs in Politics or the development of societies in History. Having that greater understanding of the world and developing the lexicon to express that (whilst also sounding smart!) are key skills that I will be able to take from these subjects and apply in the wider world.

Ultimately, the subjects also have a good culture with great teachers, so if you want an environment to develop your skills, it is always worth pursuing Humanities.

Mateo Acosta Fernandez (Year 12) Year 12 VCE Geography: Field trip Report The Oxyura australis, or as it is more commonly known, the Blue-Billed duck is of utmost importance to the biodiversity of the Knoxfield Development Site. What’s that, you say? You have never heard of the endangered Blue-Billed duck species? Open your eyes, this is happening near you! One of the highlights of our Geography class this year would be the fieldwork excursion with the class, which brought us to Lake Knox to study the species. With none other than Mr Rolfe as our personal chauffeur, and Mr De Fanti as our tour guide, we had an exciting day filled with tons of duck spotting. Geography this year has been a very enjoyable experience as we discussed issues that are happening around the world right now. I would do it again if I could!

Joshua Hicks (Year 12)

In 2021, we welcomed Miss Georgia Lawrence to the team. At the end of 2021 we will farewell Denise Tam who has worked as a Learning Support officer and tutor, for two years. Denise is graduating as a teacher and we wish her every success as she commences her teaching career in 2022.

Without the team, we would not be able to provide the support and encouragement to such a large number of students at Mazenod College. With gratitude, I acknowledge the work of Shaun Akkermans, Athena Beshir, Christine Boyle, Dominique Crasto, Yavanna Dyson, Edna Flanagan, Georgia Lawrence, Dennis Leong, Brinda Manogaran, Helen Sauer, Denise Tan and Rosie Welsford.

Anne Johnson Learning Diversity Coordinator Year 7 and 8 Literacy Support Program The Literacy Support program is designed to provide students with planned and specific instruction in comprehension and written expression. Additionally, students participating in this program have the opportunity to access assistance with their Homework and subject assignments. The Year 7 and 8 program is facilitated by Learning Diversity teachers, Mrs Edna Flanagan, Mrs Sharon O’Shannassy and Mrs Rosie Welsford.

Year 7 Student Reflections The second you step foot into the colourful Learning Centre, the bright and welcoming teachers are there to assist you. The homework sessions are great because it stops me from overthinking. Literacy sessions give us a great understanding of the work we are doing. It helps us to get started. Literacy Support encourages me and helps me to understand our learnings. It is great to work in small groups because you get to make more friends, support each other and help each other. I can get more help and when I am in a smaller group, I feel more comfortable. I also get to improve my vocabulary and express my enthusiasm for learning. Since I have moved to secondary school, I found that it was a huge change and without Literacy Support, I would not know what to do. It is a great way to learn and get

better grades. I have been growing, learning new things and thinking of how I can use these things in life. In conclusion, I recommend giving Literacy Support a try to increase your knowledge and confidence throughout life.

Nathaniel Coyne, Ethan Atkinson, Alexander Commarmond-Michel, Samuel Quattrocchi, Max Papadopoulos, Oliver Shalders, Yael Maclou and Will Rodgers (Year 7) Year 8 Student Reflections The Learning Centre has helped me improve my work. At the start of lockdown I was lazy and was failing in some subjects, but I decided that I have to work hard to achieve great things.

I started working harder than before and the Learning Centre has given me opportunities to express myself through my work. It is helpful to have teachers to ask questions. There is always someone to support you, your work and your understanding. The teachers encourage us to read and ask questions to help us understand what we are reading. It takes the stress off. Homework support is great. During lockdown I started to pile up homework as I felt lazy after school and did not want to do my work which let me fall behind a bit. Every time I went to the Learning Centre they motivated me to do my work with encouraging words. I picked up speed and was up to date in every subject. The Learning Centre has helped me improve my reading and writing, using better vocabulary to make my sentences more interesting to the person who reads my work. All in all, the Learning Centre is the best thing I have ever done as I have improved and it has made school easier and more enjoyable.

Learning Diversity

Despite the disruptions to onsite learning in 2021, the Learning Diversity team continued to ensure that all students were able to access assistance and were fully supported in the online classroom. The hard work and dedication of the team throughout 2021 is indicative of each team member’s spirit and drive. They ensured that all programs such as intervention, study sessions, homework assistance and Film Club continued to provide students with academic and social support in trying times.

Film Club In 2021, Film Club continued to provide a forum for students to share a common interest, maintain connections and enjoy movies, keeping students’ spirits up with community connection during lockdown.

Accomplishments in 2021 included Aditya Krishna-Moorthy from Year 9 creating a short film for ‘Mentalicious,’ a short film festival which College Psychologist Andrew Steer advertised, with the aim of the festival to shine a light on mental health issues. Other accomplishments included James Kwan, working on a trilogy of short films, Nicholas Plaza who has been writing film scripts and Kieran Rahilly and Nicholas Plaza who have started a podcast together. This podcast covers any current film news, future movie projects and other aspects of the movie industry.

Languages

Year 8 Japanese In Year 8 Japanese we investigate both the culture and language of Japan. Some examples are learning about Japanese food, celebrations and film, in which we watched an awesome Japanese movie for the Melbourne International Film Festival. Although we may have not been able to experience the Taiko drums or cooking yakisoba due to lockdowns, we still had the opportunity to make origami. I definitely plan to continue Japanese and you should continue your language too!

Mathai Manavalan and Louis Pham (Year 8) Year 9 Japanese Bonica Sensei has taught us many key grammar patterns and sentence structures that can help us interact using Japanese. Our restaurant role play allowed us to use a variety of grammar patterns and that made the whole assessment fun to act out and plan. For the Melbourne International Film Festival, we watched “It’s a Summer Film”, which is about a high schooler who wants to make her own samurai movie, with elements of drama, science fiction, comedy and romance. Japanese in Year 9 has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Ethan Nguyen (Year 9) Year 10 Japanese Since we were unable to host a student, we started an online conversation exchange program in 2020 with students from Meiji Gakuen University in Yokohama, Japan, to create an authentic atmosphere for conversation in our target language. Our Year 10 and VCE students met Komiya-senpai from Yokohama online to chat. Komiya-senpai has dedicated many Monday lunchtimes to this program and we appreciate her dedication.

Year 11 Japanese The Year 11 and 12 Japanese classes ran a yakisoba stall. Reflecting on my experience, I’m definitely glad that I helped as it allowed me to get along and work with my friends while still supporting the work of the Oblates. Cooking over a grill for the entire day was tiring, but we were all satisfied that we were able to feed not only the students at Mazenod but also contribute to the Missions and help the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.

Kevin Tran (Year 11) Year 8 Italian This year in Italian, we were able to experience making a tiramisu and the comedy festival “Venice in Love”. Commedia dell’Arte was an extremely entertaining festival role playing the events of the

famous Carnival in the city of Venice.

Year 9 Italian Throughout the year we improved our reading comprehension and listening skills with weekly activities. At the start of Term 3, a number of students participated in the annual Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. This competition built upon our speaking, comprehension and memory skills, with each of us tasked with reciting a particular poem. The process of comprehending Dante Alighieri’s outstanding utilisation of old Italian was an exhilarating journey and certainly one not to be forgotten.

Roberto and Antonio Di Giovine (Year 9) Year 12 Italian Our class communicated with students from Rovereto in Trentino through speech and in writing. We learnt about each other’s hobbies and their personal world, communicating through Zoom, then writing letters to each other through email.This was a great learning experience as we strengthened our speaking and writing skills and learned about the lives of young people in Italy.

We also had other rewarding experiences such as the opportunity to watch the Federico Fellini film classic, Amarcord, as well as listening to the experiences of Sarah, a Polish Holocaust survivor.

These both helped us to be exposed to European culture and history, allowing us to incorporate this knowledge into the rest of our learning.

Luca Marziale and Daniel Plowman (Year 12) Year 9 Chinese Even though Chinese is hard, it is good fun and every week, we learn lots of new characters and sentences. We listen to good Chinese music, TFBoys and Zhang Yi Xing are very good. We watch Chinese programs and China’s cities are very beautiful. I love Chinese class!

Nathanael Kuek (Year 9) Year 10 Chinese Although Chinese is hard and takes time to learn, it is my most rewarding subject. This year we have been focusing on China’s tradition and culture, looking at the infamous Spring Festival. We did Chinese calligraphy, making auspicious spring couplets. I cannot wait to continue Chinese in Year 11.

Michael Ebejer (Year 10) Year 11 Chinese We spend time developing our speaking skills, which I really enjoy. We do role playing, such as introducing our girlfriend to our family, booking

Year 12 Chinese We spent much of our time studying ancient Chinese philosophies, composed by renowned academicians such as Confucius. We observed how their principles have remained relevant

throughout the course of history, being applicable to the lives of the ancient Chinese as well as the business etiquette of Chinese corporate executives of the 21st century. As expected, a significant portion of our class time was also devoted to improving our Chinese language skills through speaking, listening and reading exercises. With the patience of Mao Laoshi, Jiang Laoshi and Yu Laoshi, we collectively improved our verbal fluency, motivated by the importance of proficiency in a second language.

Library & Digital Learning

Once again, 2021 has been a year of transitioning between in-school and remote learning. For a number of years, the Library team has focused on the Learning Commons model of being a space, both physical and virtual, where students have access to the support and resources they need for their learning success.

Library resources are organised through MazCom for clarity and access as a launching point to information with easy access from either school or home. Throughout the year, students have been able to utilise digital resources, databases and study guides from home or school seamlessly and the Sora digital library has been boosted with extra ebooks and audiobooks to respond to extra demand.

Students provided their thoughts on the reading program during remote learning.

The ‘Genre Reading’ activity prompted me to get out of my comfort zone of reading similar genres and look at other genres which have a variety of language techniques.

Ryan Perera (Year 9) Reading in remote learning gave us a great opportunity to walk away from the computer and travel the world, or a world through the pages of our books, which now more than ever is one of the most important things we can do.

Miguel Prado (Year 9) During lockdown, reading classes have really brightened my day. As a class we did book reviews, funny and serious, made an advertisement to try and sell a novel, took awesome photos as a class and were always informed on good reading skills and helped if we needed help to find a book. 2021 has been kooky, but the reading periods have helped the most out of all our subjects.

Hugh Fagan (Year 8) I enjoy our library teacher Mrs Neville having frequent online meetings with the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge competitors to see how we were going.

Savinu Perera (Year 7) Digital Learning Last year in this report I stated we were ‘prepared for whatever 2021 would bring’ unaware at the time that 2021 would be a repeat of 2020. We would once again depend on quality student devices and a stable, well-organised virtual learning infrastructure to support remote learning.

The growth of our learning and teaching systems in recent years, coupled with the committed

learning journey of teachers who have worked hard to maintain learning momentum for students, keeps our standards high. We have stepped into a new learning era during these COVID-19 years.

As Andrew Fuller suggests, we have learnt that “when nothing is certain, everything is possible”.

In a year again marked by the great challenge of a pandemic, I have been reminded that it is a privilege and an honour for Divya Mrock and myself to lead the Mathematics department, and I am continually astounded by the dedication of our teachers. Whether they are working with students who require extra support outside of regular class times, giving up their precious family time to help students clarify their understanding, or volunteering their time on weekends to assist our Year 12 students in refining their skills as the final examinations approach, they continue to give selflessly of themselves. It is important to recognise that this extra assistance given by our staff outside of regular work hours is done so on a completely voluntary basis. It would not be proper to proceed further without acknowledging our Maths staff and thanking them for their incredible and giving input.

This year will be my last as the head of department at the College and I welcome Divya Mrock to the helm of Senior Mathematics, as well as Liam Coulter who will head up Junior Mathematics.

I know that the ongoing support I have experienced from the staff will continue as we all seek to promote the best possible outcomes in Mathematics for the students under our care.

The subject “Mathematics” in Australia is often viewed as a set of numbers and equations that are fraught with confusion and anxiety, rarely being seen as having any impact or relevance outside of the classroom itself. But this is an unfair assessment. The word “mathematics” has its root in the Greek word “mathema” meaning “that which is learnt”. It is a far broader interpretation of the word that more accurately describes just how allpervasive mathematics truly is and I think that this

is a much fairer summation of what the subject Mathematics is about. The ideas explored in the subject Mathematics are about establishing for our students those thought structures required for the clear categorisation and logical sequencing of ideas. These skills may then be used for the purpose of constructing appropriate arguments in order to support any contention within any field of study. These are the thinking and analysis skills that are necessary for our students to meet with success when studying any of the languages or sciences. But more than that, the careful study of mathematics provides the individual with the tools that they require to explore life, understand and interact with the world around them and assist them on their way to discovering their part in God’s plan.

In a time when much of the world’s geography has been explored, and space exploration is restricted to astronauts, mathematics offers fertile ground for exploring the unknown. WWalter Meyer

Each year students from Mazenod participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

It is the biggest curriculum competition in Australia and has many able participants from over 40 different countries. This year, Mazenod had 364 students compete in the Australian Mathematics Competition. From this group we had 6 High Distinctions, 52 Distinctions and 140 Credits awarded. There were 19 students who placed in the top 8% of Australia, an astounding accomplishment considering the enormous challenges 2021 presented our students! It is humbling to see such enthusiastic participation, keeping the traditions of the College alive and testament to the value the College places on the importance of mathematics in the daily life of students.

And so, after a second year of challenge, we celebrate the successes of our students in Mathematics at Mazenod College and look forward to many future successes.

Music

2021 was a busy and enriching year for Mazenod’s musicians.

year, they kept our students focused, positive and engaged.

As we returned to school, our musicians turned their focus to preparing for the Mission Action Day Concert. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, rehearsal time was cut down to four weeks, however, our students rose to the occasion and performed exceptionally. Live music was sorely missed in 2020 and it was emotionally uplifting to hear our young men prepare and play together once more.

A special mention must go to Douglas Moffatt (Year 11), who performed his own original piano composition with great maturity and musical insight.

Term 1 also included excursions to the CBD to experience some of Melbourne’s cultural nightlife.

VCE musicians attended a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert featuring Australia’s premier funk band – The Bamboos. This performance also featured Mazenod’s very own Mr. Christopher Lee, Year 8 Coordinator and Music teacher, who had been head-hunted by the MSO to play Trombone. Our Senior music and drama students were also given the opportunity to attend the professional production of “Wedding Singer – The Musical”, held in the Melbourne theatre district. For many, this was the first time attending a professional musical. Both excursions were thoroughly inspiring and enjoyed.

Term 2 began with our annual Mazenod/Avila orchestra workshop, held in the Provence Centre.

This was a great educational and social event, with students rehearsing in a combined orchestra of over 200 musicians. After rehearsal concluded, students enjoyed a friendly pizza dinner together.

Term 2 also saw our musicians performing at the Deakin Edge Hall at Federation Square as part of the ACC Art and Technology Exhibition. The Chamber Strings and pianist Samuel Chen played superbly at the opening ceremony, whilst our VCE soloists showcased their recitals throughout the exhibition.

Other highlights of Term 2 included competing at the Victorian All State Jazz Festival (Stage, Swing and Monk Bands) and Victorian Flute Guild Festival, where our Senior Flute ensemble, expertly led by Mr Peter Sheridan, won first place. Our congratulations go to all students who participated in these contests.

Unfortunately, the Term 3 lockdown meant we had to cancel a number of events, however, students still had the opportunity to perform in our online recital series. Our thanks go to all students who took the time to submit performances and undertake interviews.

Finally, we thank our wonderful instrumental music and administration staff. Through a difficult

Musical This year, of course, we experienced an unfortunate end to the production: the cancellation of We Will Rock You. There was an immense sense of disappointment to be felt as this time we had undertaken months of rehearsals and were only a few weeks out from our performances.

It was a strange feeling. For many, it was the final chance to partake in the great experience of the musical.There was an outpouring of support that came from past and present members of the MATCO community when the cancellation was announced.

Despite feeling like we have lost a major opportunity to do something great, there were plenty of wonderful moments in preparing the show itself. Coming together to make something amazing during uncertain times, working towards a common goal and having fun along the way is ultimately an experience that I would never take back for the world. Being involved in the musical has allowed me to connect with so many people throughout my time at Mazenod, and created friendships and memories that I never want to forget. Working amongst such talent and learning from every single rehearsal, I have managed to find strength and confidence in myself, and even though I will not be a professional singer in the future, these memories are things that are infinite in value and worth every moment to gain.

The musical might not have happened, but the amount of work and dedication put into this project requires so much more gratitude and appreciation than could ever be put onto a page.

Thank you very much to Mr Borberly, Danni, Ash and all the other staff members from Mazenod and Avila for all of the sacrifices you made to help support the show. To all of the students who participated in any capacity, the time and effort we all placed into the show was an amazing feat in and of itself, and I hope that you can also find some positives to take away from this year’s production. Whether it is your first or last year, or any year in between, I encourage anyone to try out for the show, because regardless of what happens, it will always be an experience worth remembering.

As easy as it is to dismiss these as just wasted days of our lives, ultimately the spirit of the show lives on as long as there are people to put it on, and someday soon, MATCO will get to rock on once more, and more so than ever.

Mateo Acosta Fernandez (Year 12)

Although some of the scheduled activities were cancelled or postponed this year, we can be thankful that we did manage to get so many students out of the College and completing activities around Victoria. This hopefully gave them an insight into a new activity or experience that they may not have done otherwise. These experiences seem to always form such a huge part of the students’ reflections, as they move on to other pathways after Year 12. Whether it was an underwater stare off with a seal, a spectacular wipe out on a big wave, or a clean bowl of a teacher in a game of beach cricket, they are a fantastic way to bring together students and staff and build on character strengths such as teamwork, leadership, bravery and resilience.

It can often be hard for the students to put themselves in situations where they might not feel comfortable, and as parents we are sure it is equally hard sending your sons when they have reservations about several things such as the groups they are with or the camp they are on. However, having been part of the Mazenod Outdoor Education program for many years now, we have no doubt that it has a huge benefit for each and every student. Sometimes, that little push or word of encouragement from a friend or family member, can help reduce this anxiety and ensure that no lifelong memory or experience is missed.

The Year 8 snorkelling in Portsea was one of the best experiences and overall fun memories I have had this year. With COVID-19 we have not been able to do much, but at least we were able to enjoy snorkelling at the start of this year.

Personally, I have never done snorkelling and the experience of being able to put the snorkel on, getting into a wetsuit and being able to look underwater and see all the sea creatures was an amazing sight to see. We got to see a colony of seals and traveled in a boat that was going really fast and looked outside into the ocean. I was given the opportunity to steer the boat and overall it was such an amazing experience which we all enjoyed.

As we reflect on Outdoor Education during 2021, we can really appreciate the importance and beauty of the great outdoors that we are so fortunate to have on our doorstep here in Melbourne.

The Year 9 surf camp in Term 1 was an excellent experience for Year 9 students to get a feel of surfing and a great time for them to get to know their classmates. The camp was great because we got to get in the water and have a go at surfing with mates. Although the surfing was excellent, I think everyone enjoyed just being able to go on camp especially after the long lockdown in 2020.

Performing Arts 46

This has definitely been a challenging year for all of the faculties in the College. The Mazenod Performing Arts department has taken on this challenge of online learning by getting our students to devise and produce creative video pieces to replace the live performances of past years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Becker, Mrs Hindle and Miss Comerford for their hard work in building the Drama department through their skills and enthusiasm in their virtual classrooms.

Once again the Drama department had the honour of VCAA Top Class, with Luke Heiden receiving an invitation to audition for the Season of Excellence. Luke achieved an A+ for his Drama solo examination, which places him in the top level of State results for this task. I would like to congratulate Luke for this fantastic accomplishment.

An important element of VCE Drama is the attendance at professional productions. We were lucky to attend the performance of Jekyll and Hyde at Chapel on Chapel before the lockdowns took place. This experience gave the boys a

wonderful taste of Epic theatre in a professional theatre environment.

The annual Performing Arts Festival has become a highlight in the school year and this year’s effort certainly did not disappoint in maintaining a high standard. Due to restrictions we were not able to present a live show, but through the extraordinary efforts of our Performing Arts Prefects a recorded version of this event was created and presented online. This also included a lip sync video of staff performing ‘Eye of the Tiger’. For this event the staff are the helpers, as the Senior Performing Arts students take the reins of leadership from the first conceptual meeting to the final bow of the performance.

Unfortunately the annual school musical, in collaboration with Avila College, was one of the many Performing Arts events that was not able to take place this year. However, if augers well, this important event in our College calendar will be back next year, bigger and better than before!

As society continued to adapt to a new ‘COVID normal’ way of life in 2021 so too did our Science faculty, adapting to technological and structural changes to deliver a meaningful and engaging curriculum to students. The success of the faculty is owed to our dedicated Science teachers and laboratory technicians. They have continued to work tirelessly throughout the year to enable students to reach their potential and excel in well-supported learning environments.

Science at Mazenod allows us to expand our understanding of the world by teaching us fundamental knowledge through hands-on experiments. Students also get to know each other and their classmates by doing practicals in groups. The topics studied are important and relevant to our daily lives.

Thevinu Gunatilaka and Thejas Brijesh (Year 8) Maintaining a good knowledge of Science is extremely important as it will help shape future generations — whether it be by developing new technology or by finding medical advancements that will help society.

Antonio Di Giovine and Joshua Ngieng (Year 9)

From exploring human impacts on ecosystems in Year 7; conducting energy audits at home in Year 8; investigating the coordination of body systems in Year 9; studying inheritance patterns in Year 10, to understanding the importance of achieving herd immunity in VCE Biology, students have been challenged by the curriculum to develop their critical thinking and scientific understanding through real-world applications.

With engaging class discussions held online and group activities, as well as ongoing support from teachers, Senior students were equipped with the tools to achieve during the year. Science is extremely beneficial in assisting us, as students, in understanding and answering the mysteries of the universe and the world around us, helping society to advance further into the future.

It is our hope that our students are inspired by their studies of the scientific world. We look forward to seeing some of them pursue careers in Science and perhaps become agents of positive change and improvement for the world in which we live and for future generations.

While Science has revolutionised our understanding of the universe, it has also altered the way me and many of my peers view the world, biologically, physically, and chemically. The ongoing pandemic has exposed the application and importance of Science in upholding and safeguarding society.

In past years, I have written volumes about VCAL and VET. This year, the students decided on a different approach and reading their feedback has been a great way to finish the year. Thank you to all the VCAL and VET staff for a HUGE effort this year.

Year 12 VCAL has been great this year, besides the lockdown of course! We are currently pushing through the work online getting ready to finish.

This year all our teachers have helped us with our plans for next year and what we are going to do, especially Ms Seremetis and Mr Harris. Next year I plan on going to Carlton College to start my career in the sport industry.

Nathan Buzza (Year 12) Year 12 VCAL in 2021 was an interesting year. It was not the year we expected as we faced many challenges. I would say I enjoyed this year after joining VCAL at the end of Year 11. I am so glad I made the move, entering into VCAL from doing VCE the year prior. It was an experience that I have learned and benefited from, to make me a better person and brighter student in the years to come. Not a lot of people know about the VCAL program because they have never done it, and I was one of those people when I was in VCE. I myself have learned more in VCAL than I ever did

in VCE. It taught me life skills, the teachers are great and the workload is more manageable.

I would highly recommend doing VCAL to the students in the years below me and actually give it a chance as many people do not. It is not just for people doing trades as I am planning on going to university through the VCAL pathway and a year ago I did not know that was possible.

Cameron Webster (Year 12) This year, VCAL set the tone for thinking about my future, my career, and where I see myself in the next five to ten years. I acquired skills that will prepare me to enter the workforce whilst also attaining a White Card and First Aid Certificate, something for which I am grateful for. All in all, I have so far enjoyed my learning experience as a VCAL student and hope to continue and graduate Year 12.

Rhys Dakin (Year 11) In Year 11 VCAL, we have been keeping busy and pushing through, despite the setbacks faced through COVID-19 and extended lockdowns.

Year 11 VCAL has been a great experience this year despite the challenges. It has opened endless opportunities for us in numerous fields and industries, preparing us for the workplace and giving us valuable experience working alongside seasoned tradespeople. We look forward to 2022 and beyond.

Sebastian Dabb (Year 11)

We were very fortunate to showcase student work from Year 7 to 12 in two exhibitions this year.

The first was during Term 1 at the Catholic Arts Exhibition in East Richmond and the second in Term 2 at the ACC Art and Technology Exhibition held at Federation Square. It was a real delight to see so many outstanding works hung up and viewed in such prestigious locations. Many thanks to Paddy McKenna for facilitating the running of the event at Federation Square.

On behalf of the Visual Arts department we would like to thank Nicholas Burgos for being the Art Technician for the past two years. We are very grateful for all your help from organising stock,

assisting with classes to framing for our pending exhibition. We wish you all the very best with the rest of your RMIT Architecture degree.

Also, I would personally like to thank John McCabe, Steve Emmett and Nicole Wong for all their efforts with remote learning. It is not easy to teach a visual subject via a digital platform, however through team work, support and encouragement we have been able to create new, alternative or modified tasks, allowing our students to continue to grow and develop both manual and digital skills. Despite being offsite, students have still been able to send files through and utilise the resources at school such as laser cutting and 3D printing in order to take their conceptual ideas from paper and create 3D versions of their creations. We are excited to be able to share this with them when they return.

Towards the end of the year, the rest of the Visual Arts faculty will undergo a new look so that students from Year 7 to 12 are exposed to industry standards. We would like to thank everyone involved as it is a huge undertaking and requires “lots of hands to make light work”. The Year 12 students are to be congratulated for all their hard work with folios and final presentations and we wish them all the very best with their pending exams and applications for further studies.

Visual Arts

If 2020 taught us the character strengths of resilience and perseverance, 2021 made us learn the character strength of gratitude. As a department we are so grateful for the work put in by the students, families and staff at Mazenod College. We were very lucky to open the doors of 2021 into a brand new refurbished facility. We now have a space that caters for 28 students across a design studio, computer lab as well as a state-of-the-art Creative Digital Media room featuring a green screen room. We are extremely grateful to Mazenod College and have seen a huge improvement in student engagement and interaction as a result. The new facilities have inspired our students to be creative thinkers and to achieve outstanding works as you will see throughout the Mazenodian in the Visual Arts pages.

M A D Re f l e c t i o n s 2020 was not only a challenging year for Victorians, but also for the Oblate Missions. After being unable to host a Mission Action last year due to the pandemic, this year the College Captains, Prefects and Year 12 students were determined to host a successful Mission Action Day. Working closely with Mrs Girolami we started planning early in Term 1, quickly realizing the restrictions from the pandemic would make it incredibly hard to run the day while making sure it was fully COVID safe.

Mission Action Day was fun and exciting with many unique rides and events that make this year stand out. With Mission Action Day being missed last year it had more hype than ever before, as there were many activities that lead up to the day, such as the debate and dodgeball. Luckily the day lived up to expectation. The money we spent on the day was spent on a great cause and will be able to support people for years to come.

Ben Chaia (Year 9)

After many weeks of planning, the day arrived and we all swung into action in the hope to raise as much money for the Oblate Missions as possible. From the Mazenod staple of Mazenod’s Got Talent, to the chocolate toss and bubble soccer, the day was a major success.

By the end of the day the grand total was $50,000. We would like to thank everyone for being so generous with their donations and money on the day and we can 100% say that the money raised will be going to a good cause.

Ryan Dean (Year 12)

On Mission Action Day we walked 8km as a school around the local suburbs and this was a great opportunity for you to get your fitness up and socialise with mates.

After the walk my friends and I bought some food before we did activities, there was a great assortment of foods and it was very well prepared. My friends and I decided we would all have a game of bubble soccer and we bumped around for a bit and had no idea who won, but we had heaps of fun. Overall it was a great day.

Brady Reid (Year 8)

Mission Action Day this year was a great success, serving the purpose of gathering again as a community during the aftermath of the pandemic. The range of food and activities really made the day more enjoyable. Yakisoba was really tasty and so were the donuts. We also had our own concert where several of our friends participated.

Samuel Rodney (Year 9)

Mission Action Day was really fun. The walk was a great way to start the day. All the activities were enjoyable, especially bubble soccer. The sausages were great and so were the performances.

Xavier Harris (7 James) Students in Year 7 embraced the opportunities of our vibrant school community. A recurring analogy throughout Year 7 was for students to see themselves like jigsaw puzzle pieces. Some pieces fit together, some do not; and some pieces fit with more pieces than others. But it is only when all the pieces are joined as one that a beautiful piece of artwork is made. It only takes one puzzle piece missing for that artwork to be incomplete, therefore it has been our mission to ensure every piece in our Year 7 at Mazenod puzzle belongs as part of one spirited community.

Year 7 transition relies on resilience at the best of times, but this was made more difficult for this year’s cohort through the impact of COVID-19 over the past two years. The tone was set very early in the year when a hastily-arranged assembly was called to inform the students that their Orientation Camp had been cancelled. For some of our students, this was the second time they experienced this disappointment.

Despite the setbacks of an unpredictable year, our students truly showed a capacity to adapt and recover from difficulties and steer misfortune into something positive. Indeed, the bad times make the good times better and in the words of St Eugene himself, our students decided to “go ahead then without complaining.”

Throughout the numerous lockdown periods, our Peer Support buddies in Year 11 launched a number of community initiatives, including Meme Competitions and a community forum called Isolation Creations. These opportunities enabled our students to keep smiling and maintain their connections despite being physically separated. During our in-person learning, students gained awareness of their Character Strengths through the Personal and Social Learning program, enabling them to better understand the characteristics that make up their personality. This was reiterated through the ‘Character Strength of the Week’ initiative, which enabled students to explore one Character Strength each week through the Homeroom Program.

Our SRC, Liturgy Captains and Social Justice Captains did a fine job of representing and advocating for their Homerooms throughout numerous facets of leadership. This included a healthy competition between Homerooms in our Year Level Footy Tipping Competition and Golden Bin Award, both of which were taken out by 7 James.

I would like to acknowledge our Homeroom teachers and their tireless efforts in assisting the students with a smooth transition to Mazenod College. Their learning and wellbeing support is always provided with the utmost level of professionalism and care. Through an unorthodox transition to secondary schooling, our Year 7 students have proven themselves to be highly capable and resilient learners.

eight Year 8 Coordinator Christopher Lee What an opportunity for growth and development 2021 has been for the Year 8 cohort. No strangers to adversity, my admiration and congratulations go to every single Year 8 student for their perseverance and dedication again this year. The two weeks of transition at the end of 2020 gave us a taste of what we could expect from life as a Year 8 student and it proved to be a great success. Venturing out of the Year 7 area, across the road and in to the mix with the rest of the school was somewhat daunting, but also helped solidify a sense of belonging and ownership of our place in the school.

Perhaps the single most important factor in our success transitioning to Year 8 was the work of our outstanding Homeroom teachers. Every morning they provided the stability and pastoral care that was needed to take on all the challenges and demands that were a hallmark of 2021. They are in my opinion the most important staff members in the College and I thank them on behalf of all students for their tireless effort and support.

A major highlight this year was our first Mission Action Day. Nothing brings a community together like a fundraiser and after the run (or walk) we got to see the College really come to life. The food was plentiful, the music was world class and the weightlifting events reminded us which teachers were to be respected and admired above all else. Hopefully it also planted a seed in the minds of all students, realising that one day they too will get to organise their own MAD event and contribute to the proud legacy we have at Mazenod of supporting those less fortunate.

Grandparents Day was another special day for us as we invited grandparents and other special people in our lives to the College to say thank you and share our place of learning with them. It was a wonderful event and I thank all grandparents and special people for making the effort to come and celebrate with us. My thanks go to Mr Tony Rolfe and Mr Merry De La Zilwa for their assistance, and also to Mr Doug Leutchford and Mr Peter Nguyen who prepared our music students for the concert in the Chapel.

My final thanks go to Ms Ayesha Comerford for her tireless work as Assistant Coordinator and to Mr Matthew Rowland for his support as Dean of Junior School. All staff and students have benefited greatly from their dedication, experience and expertise this year.

To finish the Year 8 report, 8 Lombard SRC Antonio Tarallo shares some highlights of 2021.

Christopher Lee Reflecting back on Year 8 it has come with its ups and downs but all in all this year has shaped us into stronger young men within the Mazenod community. We were lucky enough to participate in the Year 8 Outdoor Education program which included rock climbing, snorkelling and horse riding. These activities were a great chance for us to try something new, challenge ourselves and strengthen our friendships. Another highlight of this year was Grandparents Day, where we got the opportunity to invite our grandparents or a special person to Mazenod. Together we enjoyed giving them a tour of the school followed by lunch together. It was a great day for creating memories that will last forever. Although the year has brought with it some challenges, as strong young men we overcame these challenges with hard work and perseverance. Well done lads.

nine Year 9 Coordinator David May Religious Life Among the struggles that Year 9 students have faced throughout the year, the Catholic faith, being a key value in our schools identity, was tightly grasped by the wider Mazenod College community. With the marvellous opportunities granted to the whole cohort, whether it was going deeper into faith and understanding of life through Religious Education classes, or just deepening into peaceful prayer during daily Mass, the Year 9 students joined many religious activities laid before them by Mazenod’s kind staff. Groups such as Ember Youth, Alpha and MAYO all supported students to broaden their beliefs and discover their true strengths and morals, leaving every student prepared and open to the future ahead.

Surf Camp Surf Camp was a great experience for the Year 9 students as we enjoyed time with our new classmates. The surf was great and back at the campsite we were able to do some fun activities as well as enjoy a night in a tent. The camp was snuck in between the lockdowns which was very lucky because everyone had such a great time. Overall, it had a positive effect on all students because we got to forget about schoolwork and just have fun with our mates.

Music Despite the continuous lockdowns this year, our cohort was able to persevere. However, before the lockdowns there were many exciting experiences such as the Mazenod and Avila workshop where students from both schools participated in performing musical pieces in front of their parents in the stands. On behalf of the Year 9 students, I will say that it was an extremely fun experience, something I am sure will be a happy memory of this year. Sadly, during August, Year 9 musicians were not able to perform live at Mazenod for the Winter Recital Night due to the lockdowns.

Fortunately, the Music department came up with a creative way for Year 9 students to present our musicianship, letting us record our performances to be later shown to the school.

Lockdown We have been in lockdown so often now, I am sure we are all familiar with them. However, lockdowns have offered us many new opportunities which we as a Year 9 cohort would not have been able to pursue before. Just recently, students were able to participate in the Mazenod Challenge Day in September, which was a new and refreshing experience in comparison to the hours of screen time. Overall, despite the challenges we have faced, the Year 9 cohort have been able to persevere through the boredom of lockdowns in the worst sequel to 2020.

Debating and Public Speaking Separate from the struggles induced by the lockdowns, the Year 9 Debating and Public Speaking teams witnessed great success in 2021. Mentored by Ms Caird and later Mr Harrington, the two Year 9 teams consisting of eager students went forward with triumph. Participating in accordance with the Debaters Association of Victoria’s rigorous measures, Mazenod’s orators proceeded, utilising Google Meets to arrive at the State Championship but sadly, Mazenod 2 suffered its first loss of the year. Similarly, the Year 9 Public Speaking team worked hard with great motivation and earned second place, overcoming the difficulties of lockdown separation. Congratulations to the Year 9 Debating and Public Speaking teams for their selfless contributions throughout the year.

ACC and House Sport Whilst ACC and House Sport had its fair share of interruptions due to COVID-19, the Year 9 cohort got the opportunity to participate in many sports, ranging from Mixed Martial Arts to Volleyball. In Term 1, students tried out for various sports, such as Athletics, Swimming, Football, and Soccer and we also enjoyed the House Athletics Carnival, where Anthony finally prevailed after many years of being winless. With the commencement of Term 2, the ACC Football and Soccer teams took to the field to represent the College. Unfortunately, both teams struggled to adapt to the tough opposition they faced. Though it was not the ideal season for both teams, there were lessons to be learnt from what happened, the key takeaway being perseverance in spite of adversity.

Film club For all the film lovers of Mazenod, the Film Club was a great experience that helped get us through whatever issues we may have faced this year. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, what was once a physical room, was transformed into a virtual Meet where either Mr. Akkermans or one of Film Clubs members would discuss a topic ranging from new films and trailers to cult classics and thrillers. Of course, the highlight was the weekly Friday Film Club watching session. A different club member picked the movie each week and we watched films ranging from Twelve Angry Men (1957) to My Little Pony: The Movie (2017). Ultimately, the Film Club positively impacted all of us and allowed us to keep wellformed friendships with students of different year levels during these difficult times.

ten Year 10 Coordinator Dayna Hale The Year 10 cohort have shown great resilience when adjusting to different learning modes throughout the year.

Term 1 saw students reengaging with the routine of being back at school, while Term 2 brought a return to remote learning and the uncertainty around work experience and Semester 1 exams. Students did remarkably well to come out of lockdown, straight into a full exam schedule, while dealing with the disappointment of missing out on work experience. The return to remote learning in Term 3 was difficult and motivation was hard to find. However, as can be read in their reflections, the Year 10 students still found some time to have fun. I wish the students all the best as they move into Year 11 and look forward to seeing their future achievements.

Dayna Hale Camp We were offered a chance to go to one of three different camps. The options were cave diving and kayaking, surfing and stand up paddleboarding or mountain biking and surfing. Despite having gone surfing last year I found the chance to surf again fantastic and refreshing and I enjoyed it along with stand up paddleboarding. My personal highlight was dinner. We cooked our own, thus enabling a series of terrible mistakes culminating with how many hot dogs I could eat. I went into camp barely knowing the other students but left good mates with most of them. After camp, we had a Personal Development day where we discussed the impacts and problems of the adult entertainment industry and its consequences on young people. Another highlight was the Driver’s Ed day. Having never driven before my results were not desired. My instructor mentioned that had this been a real scenario I would have died four times. All in all, considering the year that’s passed, looking back on Term 1, it was awesome. James Kwan (Year 10) ACC Sport Despite a slow start to the season, the Year 10 A Soccer team were able to remain unbeaten from then on. We scraped through to finals by picking up 9 out of a possible 18 points with a 3-3 draw against an extremely strong Parade College. At 2 goals down, our great team spirit pulled the game back by following our motto to ‘leave nothing undared for the Kingdom of God.’ Unfortunately due to COVID-19 regulations the finals did not happen. On the plus side, there were many great moments throughout the season, such as the celebrations after a win or goal and the camaraderie between players. What I love about playing ACC Soccer, apart from leaving class early and the bus trips, is playing football. It is a great way to take your mind off your studies whilst doing something enjoyable. This has been my favourite part of Year 10. I would like to thank Mr Montoya and my teammates for the great season, the future of Mazenod Senior Football looks exciting. Matteo Cantavenera (Year 10) SRC Being part of the Student Representative Council in 2021 has proven to be a challenging yet gratifying experience this year. This opportunity to give back to the community which has provided me with friends, facilities and education has been at the core of the Student Council’s purpose and my main focus. Two aspects of the College were heavily focused on, the College diary, which required change to maximise usage, and environmental consciousness of our decisions. The Student Council organised a school wide survey to discuss diary changes, a key one being a smaller format, and additional recycling facilities to reduce our environmental impact with tubes being placed around the school for donations of broken stationery, ring pulls and bread tags. This year the Student Council has demonstrated the importance of student voice and its ability to affect change, even in the face of an adversary like COVID-19.

eleven Year 11 Coordinator Anastasia Skourides For most students, the beginning of Year 11 is the time when we assess the efficiency of our study routines and habits established since Year 7. Academically, we are put to the test. For many of us, the jump from Year 10 to VCE was more significant than between any other year levels. Nevertheless, we have all managed to grow and evolve over the past year to become better students and more importantly, better young men. As Year 11 students, it is our job to pass our experience onto the Year 7 cohort as most of the Peer Support group have been going to visit them at least twice a week while Homeroom is taking place, talking and interacting with the new students at Mazenod.

Retreat After two stressful weeks of exams, Year 11 students had the opportunity to spend two nights at the Belgrave Heights Convention Centre. It was great to get away from the school environment and to share time with our peers and deepen our faith. Three days of prayer, good feeds and table tennis.

Peer Support The Year 11 Peer Support Leaders have taken strides to assist Year 7 students to integrate into a new school, with a focus on helping each student feel welcomed in a drastically different environment. Using our own experiences of the uncertainty and excitement felt when entering high school, the group put together a range of activities for Year 7 students in their first year at the College. One of the consistent initiatives conducted were the weekly Homeroom visits, where Year 11 Peer Support leaders visited assigned Year 7 Homerooms every week on a particular day.

Regular visits created familiarity with an older year level, providing students with a support system where doubts and concerns could be minimised. Peer Support Leaders also organised ‘Isolation Creations’, a series of challenges which allowed Year 7 students to display their skills in trick shots, cooking, meme making and more. It was a fun way for Year 7 to break up the mundane routines of lockdown whilst learning more about each other’s talents.

ACC Sport In 2021, the culmination of the Year 11 and Year 12 cohort was a force to be reckoned with in the ACC sporting league. Opening the sporting calendar were the revered Cricket, Tennis and Volleyball squads with impressive accomplishments: a dominant first in Volleyball, a close second in Tennis and in Cricket we came third. Fortunately for some us playing in Term 1 ACC sport, we were privileged to actually just be able to play against the other schools.

It was also great to play with the Year 12 students, to learn from them as well as having fun. It was a great experience.

Unfortunately, while the Soccer and Football teams did make a start to their season in Term 2, they were cut short by COVID-19 restrictions.

Debating and Public Speaking The Year 11 Debating team began the year strongly, finally competing in person after last year’s lockdown, and while this carried on for a while, very soon we were once again back in our own homes, speaking into our screens.

Nonetheless, internet disturbances could not prevent us from displaying the argumentative talents we have acquired and developed over the many years of being a part of the Debating program. After a rocky start adjusting to the turbulence of online debating, the Year 11 team are proud to have gone undefeated with help from the dedicated and passionate coaching of Mr Convery and Ms Caird. Taking the lockdown in our stride, the Year 11 team can say that we have truly experienced it all, and look forward with optimism and ambition to continuing the Mazenod legacy in our final year of Debating next year.

twelve Year 12 Coordinator Mr Rob Mann

“Enter to learn. Leave to serve.” These powerful words work as a guiding principle for our Year 12 students in their final year at Mazenod. They call students to embrace all the opportunities Mazenod has to offer so they are better prepared to serve the community once they leave. Few years of our lives have the same powerful combination of pressure, opportunity and support that can enable such considerable transformation as Year 12. Accordingly, Year 12 at Mazenod is designed to be a rite of passage as it provides opportunities to develop holistically before our students enter adulthood.

Both our VCE and VCAL students have been supported to develop the necessary knowledge, skill and experience to pursue their desired pathways after Mazenod. For some this will be university study, others will enter the workforce or hone their skills at TAFE. To cater for each of these realities our students are encouraged to espouse a growth mindset by endeavouring to always better themselves, look for ways to develop their strengths and not allow themselves to be deterred by binary measures of success or failure. It has been so pleasing to see our students adopt a mature approach to their studies and planning for their futures.

Our students are so very fortunate to be guided spiritually by our Oblate priests and a determined team of staff. Our cohort experienced a very powerful overnight Retreat in March where issues concerning manhood were explored.

Our students were all moved by the letters sent from their loved ones who expressed the pride they have in their sons.

This night will be remembered by all who experienced it for its raw emotion and the sense of comradery it invoked.

Our staff also displayed the power of vulnerability as they shared their own experiences of friendship and family to articulate the importance of cultivating positive relationships amidst the complexities of adulthood.

Our Year 12 students embraced the responsibility of being the student leaders of our College. The students were instrumental in leading an initiative “March MAD-ness” which included a series of fundraising events in the lead up to Mission Action Day. Some of these events pitted the collective talents of staff and students against each other in the contemporary blood sports of Debating and Dodgeball. Year 12 students took up the traditional baton of volunteering at Rosies, where they provided coffee and more importantly conversation to some of Melbourne’s most vulnerable members. The cohort supported Kieran Rahilly with fundraising for the World’s Greatest Shave. It was a memorable moment when the year level assembled to see Kieran shave fellow Year 12 Ken Chau’s full head of hair.

Unfortunately, in early Term 3, Victoria would once again succumb to a large COVID-19 outbreak. The subsequent lockdown would mean that our Year 12 students would again pivot to sustained periods of remote learning. The students spent much of their final months learning and connecting virtually. Our Year 12 students in their final two years of schooling have been tested like few before them have been. Isolation, uncertainty, and despair has affected all our students as they have adapted to this new world. Observing the collective character of our cohort I know the lessons learnt from the past two years will ensure that our students are better equipped than most to respond to future challenges. From their experiences of isolation, they have learnt improved ways to find connection. After such prolonged periods of uncertainty our students have developed innovative ways to find direction. Through experiencing despair our students have grown to look for hope.

These learned attributes will be powerful tools for our class of 2021 to deploy as they leave Mazenod to serve their friends, families and communities for years to come.

The Mazenod Chess team of 2021 has seen great success, performing impressively through all the tournaments we have participated in so far. The ACC tournament this year was held online and all three Mazenod teams placed within the top five, with the A team and B team finishing in first and third place, respectively. In first place of the individual standings of the tournament stood Mazenod College's very own Duleesha Gunaratne. Given the circumstances and problems presented this year, this was an excellent display of perseverance on behalf of our school. Mazenod also took part in the Boroondara Interschool Tournament, where we also performed exceptionally, achieving first place with a team led by the Intermediate Captain, Jackie Li. Mazenod College also hosted our own tournament which included all year levels giving an opportunity for the younger year levels to learn from more experienced players. It was a very close tournament, with three students fighting for third place with an equal score of 8. The Junior trophy was awarded to Khoi Do of Year 8 who placed third in the overall tournament. The Intermediate trophy was won by Jackie Li of Year 9 who was also runner up in the Open Division trophy. The overall winner of the Mazenod 2021 Open tournament was Duleesha Guaratne of Year 11. With an impressive array of new talent and experienced players, the Chess team promises to bring home more exceptional results to Mazenod College in the coming tournaments.

ACC Sports ACC and House Athletics Knox Athletics track once again played host to the Mazenod InterHouse Athletics Carnival. The culture of participation and competition was on show, with all students getting involved in at least one event whether that was a 100 metre run, shot put or even the dreaded 1500 metre run. Dethroning the mighty Gerard House after six years, Anthony took the win, easily outclassing the other seven Houses. A big thank you to all of the staff who helped out in a variety of ways, creating a vastly successful day.

The Interhouse Carnival was a prelude to the 2021 ACC Athletics Carnival, which was once again held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Although the end result was not what we wanted, throughout the day there were several outstanding performances by Mazenod athletes and great shows of sportsmanship as all students proudly represented the College.

Event winners on the day were Joedan Davis in the under 13 division, achieving the long jump and high jump double. James Borg and Thomas Chavez were champions in the under 15 division for long jump and shot put respectively. In the under 16 division, Michael Reginald won the shot put and Ishaan Bhowmick won the 400 metre.

Once again a massive thank you goes to Mr Montoya and the rest of the Sports Department for organising the day and making sure everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Staying in Division Two, it would be great to see some improvement in the next few years which would see us climb our way back up into Division One. Benjamin Collins (Year 12) ACC Badmiton Senior With our hearts set on the Senior Badminton Champion title, the Mazenod ACC Badminton team departed for MSAC. Ten schools competed in the tournament comprising students from Year 7 to Year 12, with all players enjoying representing their College and participating in a high quality competition. The day went smoothly and we cruised to the semi-final match, facing our rival school, Salesian. The matches were closely observed, with both schools hoping for a win. Unfortunately, we lost to Salesian, four games to five, still a great achievement for the boys. A big thanks to Mr May and the Sports Department for putting together a team in such a short period of time and getting everyone involved on the day. James Chen (Year 12) Intermediate On the 27th of April, a team of 14 Year 9 and 10 students took the trip to MSAC to fight for the ACC Intermediate Badminton title.

The day started well with solid wins and we went undefeated, until we faced our first big opponent of the day, Whitefriars.

We started the round convincingly winning the singles 3–1.

Four close doubles games followed and unfortunately, they were too strong, beating us 4–0 in doubles. Gutted from the loss, we were determined to not slip up again and went on a winning streak until the final round came. Knowing that if we won, there was still that slight chance of glory, we came out guns blazing. We took out the singles 3–1, and the pressure was on us. Fighting with all we had, we came up just short losing the doubles 3–1 which meant we drew with Salesian 4–4. In the end, the Intermediate team came narrowly short of taking

home the title, but we came home with plenty of experience to win the title next time. Raphael Lydra (Year 10) Junior The ACC Junior Badminton Carnival was a highly anticipated event for both the Year 7 and 8 students. Due to missing the tournament last year, for many of the students it was their first time representing Mazenod in Badminton. Throughout the tournament, Mazenod had effortlessly come out on top against other schools, with the exception of Whitefriars. Although many of the wins had come through large margins, our team was still cognisant of what was about to come and did not become complacent. Then came the big final match against Salesian. Many of the games were close and the score was tied at four games each. Therefore it ended up going to points and unfortunately Salesian defeated us by one point and won the title. Although we did not get the outcome we wanted, the day was still incredibly fun. Also, big thanks to Mr Connolly who organised our teams and accompanied us on the day.

Chris Boey (Year 8) ACC Cricket The Senior 1st XI were immensely proud of our endeavours in seeking the ultimate glory in this year’s ACC season.

Unfortunately we were unable to piece together the season we wanted, in order to claim Mazenod’s second ever Senior Cricket premiership, but we can hold our heads high after putting our best foot forward to represent the College to the best of our ability. Despite not taking home the premiership cup, we had great success both on and off the field, developing a culture that was unmatched, a feat that is something to be proud of in a team built across both Year 11 and 12.

We would like to congratulate Neil D’Souza for leading our bowling attack throughout the year, finishing the season with 11 wickets and Ben Noonan for not only winning our batting award, but also being selected in the ACC Senior Cricket ‘Team of The Year’ — a wonderful accomplishment for both Ben and Neil, which will no doubt be highlights of their time at Mazenod!

The 2nd XI were a passionate group and their efforts to give their best each week was unquestionable! The squad comprised upwards of 20 students, highlighting the passion that the cohort has to represent the College. Inspired by the leadership of Flynn Cassar, the team was able to thoroughly enjoy their season. Jono Hendricks had great success with the bat and Zach Belbin was a prominent factor in the team’s bowling attack with the two taking out the batting and bowling awards respectively.

ACC Cricket has provided us with many great memories throughout our time here at Mazenod, we would like to thank all of the coaches over the years, in particular Mr Connolly, Mr Muling and Mr Clement, for all of their efforts to organise the teams and pass on some wisdom. We all thoroughly enjoyed our Mazenod Cricket journey and we wish the Junior and Intermediate teams all the best as they represent the College later in the year.

Liam Raymond (Year 12)

ACC Tennis 2021 was a promising year for our Senior ACC Tennis squad.

There was great involvement and enthusiasm from everyone trying to improve and help each other through to the final.

Not only were the boys putting 100% effort into their matches, but most importantly they displayed their respect and sportsmanship to all the schools involved week in and week out. After a resilient battle in the final against Whitefriars, it is unfortunate that there had to be one winner in the end after everyone’s best efforts left us an inch away from the title.

Nevertheless it was a noteworthy performance from everyone.

At times our matches presented hurdles whilst playing, testing our composure and ability to fight back at crucial points. Additionally we would like to thank Mr May for his encouragement and organisation and by doing so, he played a massive role in ensuring we performed to the best of our ability throughout the campaign.

On behalf of the ACC Senior Tennis squad, we would like to encourage all aspiring Mazenod Tennis players to continue the illustrious task of reclaiming the ACC Tennis title, whilst displaying the appropriate attitude, enthusiasm and sportsmanship we serve each year. Hopefully the Junior and Intermediate teams can achieve a Mazenod victory later in the year. Sam Kim (Year 12) ACC Lawn Bowls James Russell, Jerome Lawrence and I felt the pressure on our backs as we looked to continue Mazenod’s success on the greens of Lawn Bowls. Following a couple of training sessions, where we learnt the very basics of Lawn Bowls from the guru Mr Maurice Lee, we were placed on the big stage of the ACC Lawn Bowls Championship at the MCC Lawn Bowls Club in Hawthorn.

We were thrown right into the deep end with a bad start to our first game, but managed to scrape over the line to come out victorious. It was after this that we started to put some form together. All was looking up, we looked set to continue Mazenod’s dominance in this sport, however, sadly, it all fell apart, following a loss to Whitefriars by the smallest of margins.

This then placed us behind the pack, and out of championship contention. Overall on the day, despite not achieving the ultimate success of a three-peat, we only lost one game, meaning that we came fourth overall.

A massive thank you to the coach of the team, Mr Lee, for teaching us how to play this great sport. While we did not win overall, we still hope we made him and the College proud.

Julian Smith (Year 12) ACC Swimming The 2021 ACC Swimming Carnival was a great evening for everyone, with friendly competition, and lots of smiles all around. Due to COVID it was very hard to train for the competition. This meant that twice a week morning training could not begin until just over a month before the carnival.

Despite our committed training blitz, the hard work was not enough to grasp the victory.

Mazenod performed well, coming in the top 5 in Division 2, but sadly failing to win. However it was a successful night for

our Under 15 swimmers who won first place in their age group.

Other highlights of the night include Khoi’s diving and Emilit losing his cap mid swim.

Special thanks goes to Blake Doherty and Sean Welsford, and the Mazenod staff who were involved in training the ACC Swim Squad. Wthout their dedication it would have been impossible to receive some of the results we achieved on the night. Also, what always goes unmentioned is the contribution that each and every parent makes towards a successful program. It can be very hard to persuade a teenage boy to get out of bed early in the morning and to jump in a cold pool, but we are extremely grateful to the parents who committed to taking us in the morning. Thanks also to Mr Connolly and Mr Montoya for their organisation and assistance and to all the staff who came and supported us on the night.

Congratulations to our six Senior swimmers, Elias Ng, Alex Frederic, Emilit Matthew, James Russell, Aidan Mali and Cameron McEwan who have completed a full six years being a part of the Mazenod Swimming Squad. Aidan Mali (Year 12) ACC Football Senior After the disappointment of missing the 2020 season, Mazenod footballers were keen to play as many games as possible.

The 2021 football season started with a complete new team comprising Year 11 and 12 boys who had never played together as a Senior group. Therefore, our challenge was to develop synergy within the group and to have fun as the last chance for the Year 12 players to represent Mazenod.

The First team had an inconsistent season, with some patches of great play with strong wins, but also some big losses. The season started against De La Salle on our home deck and while we were not on top for the whole game, we turned it around to come back and win the game by 19 points. Unfortunately, this win was followed by some losses to the dominant St Bernard’s and Parade, despite starting well and regularly hitting the scoreboard. Our next game against St Joseph’s Geelong resulted in much of the school watching our game during lunch.

We were in it to win and the whole team had a fantastic game. In the end we lost by 50 points, but were happier with the solid 4 quarter effort. We were also privileged to take part in the game against St Bede’s, which started with a minute of silence after the death of one of their students and the Indigenous round against Whitefriars. Jermone Lawerence kept us laughing with his inspirational half time speeches, Ben Tout and Ben Collins debuted and it was great to see Ben Collins kick his first goal.

The Second team started their season strongly and kept the contest close against De La Salle. Despite the loss there was hope among the group for the upcoming season as we had many good patches to take away from the game. Unfortunately our excitement of playing our first home game did not match what happened on the field, and we only managed to kick two goals for the game. However, against St Mary’s in the following round we dominated the midfield for much of the game and kicked the pressure into next gear and started laying huge tackles across the ground, including two of them from Stefan Marques, and began to find possession of the footy. There were also plenty of highlights against St Bernard’s and Emmanuel such as Flynn Cassar’s defensive work and Nathan Buzza’s strong marks and midfield work, resembling Sam Walsh.

It was an awesome and fun season from both teams, with many highs from all the Year 11 and 12 players. Even though we did not have the greatest success, the Mazenod Spirit was evident in every game. We would like to thank the sporting staff and coaches for helping us all year, go Nodders!

Ethan Plaza (Year 12) Intermediate Backing up a tough year last year with 12 months of uncertainty, heartache and lack of positives, the 2021 season was going to be tough for everyone. Luckily, footy is heavily based on muscle memory and the will to play the game in good spirits.

The Intermediate teams struggled all season, but pleasingly the games were played with good sportsmanship and in high spirits with the boys getting out there and trying their best to represent Mazenod.

Being a part of a very talented Year 10 outfit, coached by the football masterminds that are Mr Miller and Mr Phibbs, we certainly had a few bright spots during the year. It was unfortunate that scores never seemed to go our way when the final siren went, but the squad never gave up on each other and continued to show up every week, giving it their all and persisting the whole four quarters. Yes, we did collect another wooden spoon to put in the trophy case but the players continue to come back with enthusiasm for the love of the game and the comradery we have created in the team.

On a brighter note, the Year 9 team led by Mr May and Mr Harrup, had a massive pool of 37 players to juggle every week. The team were led by their spine of workhorses, Cooper Negrepontis, Thomas Heverin and backline general, Max Addison, who organised his back six under immense pressure extremely well. He, along with the others, worked it down to the focal point of the offense, Harrison Canning, who took the opportunities he was given and they took a win against De La Salle. Much like the Year 10 team, the Year 9 team did not win as many games as they would have liked, but continued to fight for the Nodders. The Year 9 team played the game in the right spirits, holding their heads up whether they won or lost.

The dedication and hard work of not only the players but the teaching staff who continue to enter teams to give the students an amazing opportunity to represent the school is testament to the hard work of everyone. All in all, the Intermediate teams learnt some valuable lessons that hopefully can propel them to favourable results in the coming years. On behalf of the teams I would like to thank Mr May, Mr Miller, Mr Harrup and Mr Phibbs for putting the time and effort into coaching the two sides for the year. A further thanks to the Sports Department for getting the competition and teams sorted after a chaotic year. I can confidently say that next year will be bigger and better for everyone involved and hopefully we can get some more wins for Mazenod. Terron King (Year 10) Junior The Year 7 and 8 football teams had a rough start to their season, with all teams having some losses after the first game in months due to lockdown. It was the first game representing Mazenod College for both the Year 7 and 8 students and despite a rough start to the season for all teams, pleasingly

the boys trained hard and showed both great courage and perseverance in all games.

Losses for all three teams meant that it was looking like a wooden spoon for all teams until round 3. The Year 8 Division 2 team had a massive win against Simonds, winning by 60 points, and an outstanding performance by Harry Haebich kicking 5 goals, and this gave the boys some hope and belief for the rest of their season. While the other two Junior teams had a few more losses, teamwork was getting stronger and finding out each other’s strengths and weaknesses helped. Pleasingly, this paid off and both the Year 7 and 8 Division 1 teams finished the season positively by smashing Salesian in round 6. The Year 8 team won by 96 points, with Bailey Sanders kicking 7 goals and winning the Founders day award.The Year 7 team won by 30 points and scored the most points they have for the season.

All players and coaches should be extremely proud of their efforts and contribution to the team throughout the season.

Special thanks to the coaches, Mr Ford, Mr Muling and Mr Johnson, for their time and effort, giving us the best experience of school footy. Trevin Hewawasam (Year 8) ACC Golf On the 10th of May, the Mazenod Golf team once again competed in the ACC Open Golf Tournament at the Northern Golf Club. We were determined to put in a good showing to claim a spot in Division 1. In cold, wet and windy conditions, 82 golfers from 11 different schools teed off at 8.30am in a shotgun start. The trying conditions played havoc with our scores although we saw many big drives, excellent iron play and great putting throughout the competition.

Our team consisted of Jackson Traplin, Marcel Juszczyk, Herbert Fischbacher, Liam Cuce, Nawin Cameron, Brodie Mutthumani, Josh Bakof and Jesse Haslam. Although we toiled hard, we were no match for our other Division 2 rivals on the day, with St Mary’s coming out on top. However we had some good results with Jackson Traplin (76), Marcel Juszczyk (110), Herbert Fischbacher (113), Liam Cuce (117), finishing with solid rounds.The effort from our boys could not be questioned.

This opportunity was invaluable for our team. Not only does it provide us with competition against some talented ACC golfers, it is great fun and a fantastic way to represent the school. I would highly recommend all students give it a go. A big thank you to Mr Connolly who transported us to and from the event and also the staff at the Northern Golf Club for their help and hospitality.

We look forward to heading back to Northern next year in the pursuit of taking Mazenod to where it belongs, Division 1.

Jackson Traplin (Year 11) ACC Soccer Senior Mr Montoya once again guided the Senior First team through another ACC season undefeated in the regular season.

There were some tight games, but we also managed to win the annual Davie Egan Cup between Mazenod and Salesian.

The team qualified for the final against a tough St Bernard’s side, in which they took the lead early on from a free kick by

Emman Theodorou. But St Bernard’s scored two goals in quick succession to take the lead at half time. Deep into the second half a great strike from Marcus Di Meo would bring the Nodders back to level terms and sent the game to extra time.

With Mazenod banging on the door and putting in immense pressure in extra time, St Bernard’s remained strong and survived to take the game to a penalty shoot out. Unfortunately, Mazenod lost the penalties and after 120 minutes of strong football, we ended as runners up in a well-played season. A big congratulations goes to Sebastian Speranza, Marcus Di Meo and Jordi Valadon in making the ACC Team of the Year.

We further applaud Jordi Valadon on being named as the most outstanding performer by the ACC for Soccer.

The Senior Second team were coached by Mr Spasic and also battled hard throughout the season and enjoyed some fabulous victories. Unfortunately Mazenod fell short of a spot in the finals, although credit to the team on a well-fought season. A big thanks goes to the coaches, Mr Montoya and Mr Spasic and all the assistants who made this season possible for both Senior teams. Jordi Valadon (Year 12) Intermediate It was a slow start for the Year 9 A team with a 3–2 loss against St Joseph’s Geelong , but the boys showed great determination and courage coming from 3 goals down to make it a competitive match. This was then followed by a 1–1 draw with St Bernard’s, despite being the better side all match. With a few injuries in the remaining games, we came very close but unfortunately suffered three losses on the trot to St Bede’s, Salesian and Parade. The team gave everything throughout the term and can look forward to many improvements next year. We had a good end to the season with a big 9–0 win over Whitefriars. It is very hard to mention key players this year as all the boys worked extremely hard. Many thanks to Christian Gallo, our captain, for his leadership and dedication and all of the coaches for their assistance.

It was also a rough start for the Year 9 B team as they suffered a big loss to St Bernard’s and a narrow loss to Salesian. However, the boys pleasingly showed immense improvement in their second game and nearly picked up the win. The team showed great skill in their last match against De La Salle, with a big 3–0 win and hopefully this is a sign of a strong future for Soccer at Mazenod. Thanks to all participants who took part in this campaign. We are looking forward to seeing you compete for Mazenod in future years to come. Congratulations to Callum Craig and Jacob Vellis for their awards and skill all season, and thanks to the coaches and assistants who helped us achieve our best all year.

The Year 10 A team had a dramatic start to the year as traffic delays meant that we were not able to warm up and had to play our first game as soon as we stepped from the bus. This was then followed with a draw against Whitefriars, where we dominated the game and were unlucky not to win. However, things started to look promising and followed with another draw to a strong Emmanuel side. Momentum then turned and we started a winning streak with a 5–2 win against St Bede’s and a 5–1 win over our archrivals Salesian. With great team spirit we were still able to make finals after we recovered to draw 3–3, after being 3–1 up. We were unlucky not to win the game, but we were able to dig deep and secure our place in the top four. Unfortunately we missed out on playing finals due to COVID restrictions, but the team showed great improvement,

outlining their hunger and determination despite a slow start.

This shows the resilient character of the boys, and positive signs for the future. Well done to Zeth Athanasopoulos, Matteo Cantavenera, Luca Maio and Jason Rao who scored a majority of our goals for the season. Thanks to the coaches for guiding us and helping us improve throughout the season.

The Year 10 B team had an amazing start to the season defeating a strong Parade side 5–1. However, we then suffered a few losses against eventual champions St Mary’s and De La Salle. However, the boys did not drop their heads and reacted with a big 6–2 win against St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully and then followed with another great 4–1 win against Simonds. The Year 10 B team ended the season with three wins and three losses. The team displayed great solidarity and sportsmanship throughout the whole season and we thank the coaches for their help. Matteo Cantavenera (Year 10) Junior The Year 7 Division 1 team was coached by Mr Keegan Coulter and enjoyed their first ever ACC game against Whitefriars with a strong 3–0 win. The second game resulted in a massive 14–0 win against St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully, but there were then three unlucky consecutive losses to Emmanuel, De La Salle and Parade. The best players were Luca Ipradjian and Daniel Bortoli and the best team man was given to Rhys Rodrigues for consistently putting in a great effort every week. Sadly, the season was cut short by lockdowns, but the boys will be hunting next year for the first home win, as well as cementing a place in the finals.

The Year 7 Division 2 team started their season in great fashion with three wins. Round 1 with a 5–0 win against Whitefriars, Round 2 saw a 5–0 win against Parade and next was a 4–2 win against St. Bernard’s. This streak ended with a loss against the second St. Bernard’s team. The team had a great run, showed some fabulous skills and were unlucky not to make the final.

Congratulations to the most consistent man on the pitch in Joshua Del Papa, the best team man Gian Luca Florio and to coach, Mr Clement.

The Year 8 Division 1 team started with a 0–3 loss against St Bede’s, but the rustiness was brushed away as they redeemed themselves in the next game with a 7–0 win against Simonds.

The team struggled against Salesian suffering a 1–3 loss, but again showed great resilience to bounce back with a 2–1 win against De La Salle. Sadly, the final game resulted in a 1–2 loss against St. Bernard’s before the season was cut short. Well done to the most valuable players in Jasper van den Bosch and Ryan Oh, the best team man in Roko Tustonjic and big thanks to the coach, Mr Liam Coulter.

The Year 8 Division 2 team was coached by Mr Passalent and had never been beaten in the league. They continued that winning streak by triumphing in their first three matches and drawing one match against St Bernard’s. Unfortunately, restrictions meant that the season was unable to be completed, but well done to the best players Nathan Le, Kristian Rezk and Anton De Rose. ACC Sports After a disappointing 2020 due to COVID-19, the Volleyball program hoped for an uninterrupted year.

To begin 2021, it looked smooth with the Senior teams travelling to Warrnambool in order to compete in the seaside tournament. Whilst no medals were won, plenty of promise was shown for players who did not get the opportunity to train much last year. However that was the end of the pandemic-free start and due to lockdowns the Volleyball program has been unable to go ahead.

Fortunately, the Senior team were able to compete in the ACC competition in Term 1. The Senior A team had dominant victories over St Bede’s, Whitefriars, St Bernard’s and St Mary’s during the initial rounds, before toppling Salesian and finally Whitefriars again to win the championship. Ben Collins was named the Most Valuable player and Ben Tout was awarded Best

Team Man. Meanwhile, the Senior B team displayed a similar dominance in the heat rounds, with 4 solid victories for the season. The B team then went on to have confident wins over Parade and Salesian to take the title. Congratulations to Russell Truskowski who was awarded the Most Consistent player.

At the time of writing, there is a small chance that we will be able to play the Volleyball Victoria Schools Championship in December and an even smaller chance that the Open team will be able to compete in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in Queensland later this year. Fingers crossed these will go ahead and hopefully next year will bring more opportunities for the program to get back up and running again.

House Athletics In Term 1 the Mazenod House Athletics Carnival was held at the Knox Athletics Track. There was plenty of anticipation leading up to the day in regards to whether Gerard would break the record of six Athletics Championships in a row, who would take out the title of the Fastest Nodder in the Mazenod Gift and which records would be broken on the day.

The day was filled with plenty of colour, House spirit and enthusiasm amongst the participants. There were many outstanding performances of the day and all students should be congratulated on their attitude and participation on the day.

Competition was fierce and it was tight between all Houses for the majority of the day. In the end it was close, but Anthony claimed its first ever House Athletics Championship, putting to an end Gerard’s recent dominance and dreams of a seventh consecutive title.

MacKillop also finished second for the second year in a row.

From the Editors With an optimistic dose of hopefulness, the 2020 Mazenodian Editorial concluded by suggesting, “we eagerly farewell 2020, embrace the lessons learned and welcome the positivity that 2021 will bring.” Our words seemed prophetic as the year started relatively smoothly.

Lockdown interruptions were minimal and Outdoor Education activities, ACC Sport and music rehearsals all resumed. Students whinged about price increases at the canteen and staff questioned the efficiency of the O’Rourke climate control system, school had returned to regular normality. Sadly this normalcy, and many other mundane idiosyncrasies of Mazenod life were short lived.

The corridors fell silent, tea cups were abandoned and the canteen line drastically reduced. Teachers clad themselves in their favourite activewear, students donned their hoodies and beanies and we were once more plunged into the world of remote learning, a type of learning that welds the joy of muting students with desperate attempts to create class discussion.

Nerves were already frayed and the frustrations at the lack of progression and innumerable and incomprehensible policy updates meant that teachers and students alike had their resilience tested more than ever before. Unlike the Year 12 students from 2020 who had a delayed start to their exam period, the 2021 cohort found tensions increasing as they sprinted to both their final exams and the vaccination hubs.

However, for all students, there were still classes to attend, homework to complete and tests to conquer. Yet it is the extra curricular events that truly unite the Mazenod community and they were the landmarks that were missed most of all — ACC sporting matches, retreat days, orchestra rehearsals, chess matches in the library, lunchtime banter in the cafeteria and the Friday afternoon buzz at the lockers. Thankfully, in a similar manner to 2020, there is still much to be celebrated in the school calendar of 2021 and the pages of the Mazenodian have many triumphs to share.

On behalf of the Editorial team, we extend our thanks to the many people who have assisted in the 2021 publication. Our appreciation goes to Tony Rolfe and Merry De La Zilwa, who are always in the right place at the right time to capture the perfect photo. Congratulations to Anthony Yong who collated the student leadership reports and we appreciate the efforts of Zachary Frisch who continued the tradition of students designing the front cover. We also give thanks to all the students who contributed to writing a majority of the Mazenodian reports. Our Art students have again produced beautiful pieces and we thank the Visual Arts faculty for their assistance with collation, layout and design.

And so, at the risk of a jinx, we end our Editorial in the same way we did in 2020. We hope that this publication is an accurate reflection of a difficult year, but one that has also brought valuable lessons and new appreciations. We eagerly farewell 2021, embrace the lessons learned and welcome the positivity that 2022 will bring.
