Our College Vision Vision Mazenod College is a Catholic boys' secondary school striving to live the charism of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Centred on the person of Jesus Christ, our community is built on faith, nourished by the Eucharist and seeks to live and share Gospel values in word and deed.

Mission Mazenod College is committed to the pursuit of excellence in the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of each student according to his unique capacity. Each person at Mazenod is encouraged to contribute to a welcoming and caring community in collaboration with our local Parishes.

Guiding Principles 1.

Let us be united in the love of Jesus Christ

We seek to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the Saviour, and to see people and the world through His eyes. By regularly turning our hearts and minds to Him, and by opening ourselves to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we seek, like Mary Immaculate, to receive God's holiness and bring it to reality in our daily lives.

We serve to light the fire inside our students, fostering a burning desire to achieve academic excellence and to cultivate their abilities to the fullest. We see education as a lifelong process of formation in the truth, not just a moment in time, encouraging our students to be the flame, continuously burning brightly and sharing their talents.

We strive to nurture a friendly and caring school, enabling students to develop a sense of loyalty, solidarity and service. College Overview Mazenod College is a Catholic Boys' College served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate working in partnership with the Archdiocese of Melbourne. It was established in 1967 temporarily at St Joseph's Primary School, Springvale and in 1968 moved to its present site in Mulgrave.

The college was established in response to the need for a Catholic Boys' Secondary College by the Parish Priests of Springvale, Springvale North, Clayton, Glen Waverley and later, Mulgrave.

Through their vision, Oblate Service, commitment, and the support of local Parishioners, Mazenod College was born.

Since its beginning, Mazenod College has been under the care of a religious community of Priests and Brothers from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Mazenod College has always been a partnership between the original five founding parishes, local families, students and Old Boys, Catholic Education Office Melbourne and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. In 2019 the announcement was made of the appointment of a lay Principal to Mazenod College.

The Australian Province remains committed to our Education Ministry under the guidance of a Lay Principal and an Oblate Priest as Rector, ensuring the Oblates are able to maintain a meaningful and sustainable presence of service in the college.

The Oblates will continue to have an active presence in the Leadership and Pastoral aspects of the college into the future.

Mazenod operates with a College Board chaired by a lay Chairperson with both clerical and lay representatives from the five constituent Parishes.

The Board also comprises delegates from the College's Parent Organisations, the College Business Manager, Staff Representatives, and Oblates.

The college is proud of its fine multicultural heritage, where members come from a wide variety of different cultural backgrounds. This heritage is valued and treasured at the college.

Principal’s Report So much can change in a year. At the time of writing an article for the 2019 Mazenodian we had just returned from our Language Tour to Japan and I made reference to the biennial AHISA Conference, which adopted the theme "Forging the Future" reflecting on workplace structures and skills students will need to tackle the next decade. How pertinent one year later.

Our year proceeded with great uncertainty and a sense of vulnerability. After being shocked by the devastation of the bushfires over the summer holidays, we were confronted with the coronavirus pandemic. Our community spirit and resilience were about to be challenged.

We nearly made it to the end of Term 1 with conventional face to face teaching, and we managed to complete all the scheduled camps and Outdoor Education activities for the term. We commenced lockdown and our new Learning Management System, MazCom, was about to be tested. Thankfully, we had updated our infrastructure and spent considerable time training staff and students to use this new medium.

The development of the online classroom evolved and evolved rapidly. Assessment tools and video conferencing became a new art form. The students' resilience and capacity to support the necessary changes were amazing. A significant number of students reached out for support during the year, whether for reassurance with their studies, vocational direction, or moral support, to keep motivated and on track.

By the second wave, routines were established, students and teachers were becoming quite innovative and several activities continued despite the isolation and lockdown restrictions.

Debating and public speaking, Chess competitions, food technology, home fitness activities, social justice programmes, trivia competitions, Performing Arts festivals, music performances, virtual assemblies and award presentations all continued utilising videoconferencing. ParentTeacher Interviews proved quite successful, even to the extent many families stated the new format was preferred to the traditional model.

In 2019 the College completed its NSIT (National School's Improvement Tool) Review. The College Executive met in January to establish a clear and explicit agenda to respond to the Review and establish a Strategic Plan for 2020 to 2024. That plan is multi-faceted and was circulated throughout the community. Titled, 'Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow' the document reflects on our traditions and history with enormous pride, appreciates the rapid rate of change that is occurring in our community, and portrays a clear vision for the future.

The Review is designed to critique current practice and provide an improvement agenda, so the College can continue to develop. The reviewers were stunned by the community relationships and networking. The College is truly blessed with the associated organisations that link our families and Old Collegians.

The de Mazenod Family was introduced in Fremantle in 2019 and is designed to reach out to all who associate themselves with the Oblate Ministry across the country. We are poised perfectly to nurture and develop these communities and relationships as part of the de Mazenod Family.

As part of the Strategic Plan, the College has developed an explicit learning agenda that incorporates 'Visible Learning' and 'Visible Wellbeing'. Based on evidence-based research, the College has established a Visible Learning Framework utilising Professor John Hattie's research that is designed to make a positive difference to maximise learning outcomes for students.

Similarly, our Visible Wellbeing Programme complements all our existing structures, but also uses evidence-based research, in this case, the work of Professor Lea Waters from Melbourne University, who is an expert in Positive Psychology.

A strategic plan would not be a strategic plan if it did not feature plans to build. Initially planned to start work in April 2020, the eight-stage redevelopment of the original buildings called 'Middle School Works' has been postponed until a financial assessment can be made in early 2021. This step allows for the potential impact of the economic slowdown due to the implications of the coronavirus pandemic. The College is determined to refurbish and revitalise current facilities including the Learning Centre, classrooms, Science laboratories, Language facilities, staff room and Canteen area.

It is also a new era for Catholic Education with the new Governance model for the Archdiocese incorporating the governing entity, MACS, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Ltd. Many new members of our College Board have been inducted and the new Chairperson will be elected on the resignation of Mr Peter Le Grand. Peter has served the community on the College Board for 30 years and for the last 29 years as Chairman. His contribution to Mazenod and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate has been outstanding and the College is indebted to Peter's direction and support.

There are new appointments for our Oblate Community for 2021. Fr Harry Dyer OMI is appointed College Rector for 2021. Fr Giancarlo Iollo OMI and Fr Kevin Davine OMI continue to serve the community as members of the Chaplaincy team, but Fr John Sherman OMI has been appointed Chaplain to Burpengary Queensland. Fr Christian Fini OMI, remains the Provincial of the Oblates and will continue his important relationship with the College. The leadership of the Oblates, present and past, is why the College is so extraordinary, and on behalf of the de Mazenod Family I would like to thank them for their witness and service to us all.

Thank you for all your support throughout the pandemic year of 2020. The care and professionalism of our staff, the understanding and support of our parents and the brilliant way our students have accepted and coped with the conditions, have been extraordinary. I would like to wish all the students who have graduated and are embarking on tertiary studies or employment opportunities every success for the next phase of their lives. Many of their amazing achievements are detailed in this report.

Church Authority Report On February 28, we gathered as a community at St Patrick's Cathedral to officially mark the commencement of the academic year for 2020. When we gathered that evening, as we faithfully have for many years, we had no idea what 2020 would have in store for each of us as individuals and as a community. That evening I preached a reflection on living the third guiding principle of the College Mission and Vision Statement: 'We have but one heart, one soul.'

We strive to nurture a friendly and caring school, enabling students to develop a sense of loyalty, solidarity and service. We provide pastoral care and encourage participation in all aspects of College life. Nourished by the Eucharist, and led by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, we believe that once a student enters the College, he and his family become part of our community for life.

In my homily I challenged the community to live this principle and create a community that reflected the reality in our world with the many challenges we face. I encouraged each of us to be contributors to the Mazenod community, not users and abusers, not bystanders and keyboard warriors; particularly for our Year 12 students as they prepare to become good citizens of the world.

In reflecting on the global situation we live in, I made the following observations which proved to more prophetic than I could have imagined: "At a global level, there is conflict and division in almost every region of the world. World politics seems to be dominated by a small-minded approach of building walls and bunkering ourselves in, yet a virus-like COVID-19 humbles us and reminds us of our connectedness. When our building industry stops because we can't source supplies from China, we will realise just how connected we are."

This year as a community and society we have had to discover within us a new resilience, something which we as a privileged society may have lost through our complacency. I have witnessed the best of the Mazenod Community living the principle of 'One heart, one soul' no matter what the challenges of 2020. I admired the way the teachers and College staff adapted and then re-adapted to new challenges to ensure our young men received the best that they possibly could under difficult circumstances. This is something that I have witnessed throughout my time at Mazenod but was more evident this year.

As I conclude my sixth and final year as Rector at Mazenod College, with four as Principal, it has been an amazing privilege to serve the Mazenod community, which was instrumental in my personal growth as a young man. In the last six years, I encountered many challenges. I brought with me a nice leather tissue box which I placed in my office, it had never seen so much use by those who came to visit me. I was a little worried about the effect I was having on people until I accepted that any role of leadership which involves the journey of young people will be a rollercoaster of tears for all involved. At times these were tears of joy; other times tears of sorrow.

Tears in many ways are the language of the heart and soul.

The word "sacrifice" is not that trendy at the moment, but I witnessed people giving of themselves for others. I witnessed the sacrifice of families and parents, sparing no effort to send their sons to Mazenod and support them grow into men. I witnessed the sacrifice made by the staff to ensure every opportunity was afforded to the young men they served, assisting them to grow into fine talented young men. I witnessed boys sacrifice their youth, forced to grow into men through tragedy, and I witnessed students looking out for one another as brothers. I will always have a special place in my heart for Mazenod College as an Old Boy and now a former staff member and I thank God for the opportunity I had to give something back to a community that shaped me.

The Oblates look forward to a long future of serving Mazenod College in a new model of leadership in partnership with the Archdiocese of Melbourne. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Chairman of the College Board Mr Peter Le Grand for his unwavering support of the College, in particular the College staff over many years and our longest serving Chairman to date. A great man of faith, always available and willing to support and serve the community in whatever way possible. The College could have no greater champion or advocate than Peter. I thank him for his generous service and the many sacrifices he made as a parent, Chairman and now a grandparent of the College.

I acknowledge the staff of Mazenod who welcomed me into the College and who make an enormous contribution to making Mazenod College, the place that it is. I would like to thank the College Executive, particularly Mr Tony Coghlan, who embraced a young and green leader and supported me and helped me grow into the role. I acknowledge and thank the Oblates I have ministered with over the last six years but particularly Fathers John Sherman, Kevin Davine and Giancarlo Iollo for their commitment and service to the College in this challenging year.

To the class of 2020, I wish you every blessing as you leave Mazenod and join the esteemed ranks of Old Boys of the College. Always be proud of your College and continue to represent us and your family in all that you do as you explore the world beyond Kernot Avenue. I leave you with the final words of the College anthem, both as my prayer for you and blessing.

'With our eyes on tomorrow, Its joy or its sorrow, We ask God for light, To keep faith ever bright Leave nothing undared for the Kingdom of God, Leave nothing undared is our pledge Mazenod.'

College Board Report Chairman's Report

It is hard to believe that as I step down as Chairman of the Mazenod College Board that I am in my 30th year on the Board and 29th as Chairman. The College has grown in that time from 800 students to 1440. We have constructed new buildings and spent in excess of $40,000,000 in that time. We have greatly advanced and improved the educational opportunities for our students. I have enjoyed working with and becoming personal friends with so many wonderful staff and in particular the Oblate priests. It has been a great gift to share in their dreams for the faith and education of thousands of boys. I have never met a better group of priests than the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

I would like to pay tribute to the five Rectors I have worked with over the 30 years. Fr Kevin Davine, Fr Pat Moroney, Fr John Sherman, Fr Michael Twigg and Fr Christian Fini. I would also like to thank Mr Tony Coghlan, the first lay principal of Mazenod. Tony has made a significant contribution and is well respected by the students.

The staff at Mazenod are focused on providing first-class education, but they also care about our boys as people and their wellbeing. The College has and continues to, provide an outstanding education for the boys who are fortunate to attend Mazenod. The values passed down by parents and teachers is something to behold. There is a wonderful caring camaraderie amongst our Old Boys throughout the generations.

Being Chairman has not been an easy ride. There have been many challenges with providing the right infrastructure and balancing and managing finances. If the buildings were necessary we built them. It must always be remembered that they have to be paid for. This is done through a mix of College fees and Federal and State Government grants.

My wife Anne and I look forward to Mazenod continuing to be a large part of our lives, as it was for our sons Roger, John and Michael. My daughter Virginia now has her son at Mazenod, so the family tradition and connection continues.

We are embarking on a new board which will be very business orientated. They will focus on developing the College and the faith-filled educational opportunities even further. I thank all who have served on the Mazenod College Board for their time, loyalty and commitment to the wellbeing of the College. I wish the new Board every success and will always be there to advise and assist if required.

May Mary Immaculate continue to bless and keep safe our College, staff, parents and students.

Education in Faith Goals & Intended Outcomes Mazenod College has been served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in partnership with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne since 1967. It sees daring and commitment to Christ as essential central elements in its character. We are reminded of this daring in our College motto, 'Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God'. It requires us to seek, find, share and celebrate the presence of God among us. The College is named after the Founder of the Oblates, St Eugene de Mazenod, and he asks us to do this as a Community. St Eugene de Mazenod called the people of post-revolutionary France (19th Century) back to a relationship with God. He was especially interested in supporting those that are excluded and left out.

Mazenod seeks to foster in all its students' development of their knowledge and love of God, through deepening their faith in Jesus Christ Mazenod seeks to develop persons who are responsible and inner-directed, capable of choosing freely in conformity with a well-informed conscience. Mazenod seeks to promote a moral consciousness in its students, in accordance with Christ's teaching and the mind of the Church, and enable them to relate it to their own lives.

Mazenod seeks to provide a suitable Christian atmosphere that encourages the growth of the whole person; provide the opportunity to integrate culture and faith through the acceptance of Christ and his ideas, attitudes and values. Mazenod seeks to provide a critical and systematic account of the teaching of the Gospel and the Catholic Church in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Archdiocese whilst at the same time enabling students to experience a sense of Christian Community. It will also put students in touch with their unique Australian Catholic Heritage.

Achievements The presence of Priests of a missionary tradition and a beautiful Chapel with daily Eucharist are great blessings. Mass is offered at 8.10 am Monday to Friday in the College Chapel, and the whole school celebrates the Eucharist together at important times during the year. The Priests are always available pastorally for students. Reconciliation is formally made available to all students during Lent and before Christmas.

The College aims to foster the Faith of its students and to build upon the positive practice of faith and the example set by their families. The College is proud to provide a very distinctive atmosphere, which is caring, friendly and cooperative.

VALUE ADDED

Value Added: Education in Faith - What we did

•

Year 11 students were offered two retreats of three days - 25 students took up this opportunity.

•

Our Year 12 students took time to volunteer with Rosies Oblate Youth Mission where each Friday night, a team offer their friendship and hospitality through the simple gesture of a free hot or cold drink to the homeless.

•

Students and families donated generously to the Oblate Missions Christmas Appeals and local St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeals

•

The school community was involved in awareness-raising activities for National Reconciliation Week, culminating in the Dreamtime AFL match and activities at Federation Square attended by YR 12 Leaders and Staff

•

The college facilitated the attendance of many youth to various local parish youth groups through advertising and a Year 9 Youth Ministry activity

•

Twice in 2020 the school community participated in a virtual trivia night, created and run by senior students, to raise money for Oblate missions overseas.

•

The Year 10 Youth ministry classes ran retreats for all Year 7 classes

•

Liturgy prefects attended St Patricks Cathedral for an experience of Catholic Culture

•

Mass is offered at 8.10 am Monday to Friday in the college Chapel, and the whole school celebrates the Eucharist together at four important times in the year. In 2020, whilst in remote learning Mass was celebrate live from the College Chapel on YouTube.

•

Reconciliation is formally made available to all students during Lent and before Christmas.

•

Year 8s had a half day when they were challenged to make decisions in line with the Christian faith

•

All students were encouraged to join their local youth groups to participate in the 6th Catholic Youth Games held at the college. This was followed by a vibrant youth mass. In 2020 this was held online.

•

Year 12 students prompted by Alpha video discussed their faith in small groups

•

Year 12 students were fully engaged by David Kobler in dealing with sexuality and future family life on two occasions

•

Year 7s reflected on what is to be male in a commercialised and sexualised society

•

Year 12 students involved themselves in Stations of the Cross, listened to three fellow students talk on life struggles (two with cancer, one with acceptance) and their faith

•

Year 12 students spent the day at Lysterfield Salesian retreat centre

•

Year 11 students viewed the movie "Case for Christ"

•

Year 11 students viewed the movie "The Way". One person's journey to faith.

Year 12s engaged with Timorese people to learn about struggles in life

Year 12s were invited to a "Faith and Pizza" evening with Fr John.

Current and past students are invited to share an evening reflection and Adoration called empowered.

Value Added: Education in Faith - What we usually do

Mazenod College students usually raise more than $70 000 for Mission Action Day, which is an annual event where students raised money and distributed it to the Oblate Missions

•

Year 10 students participate in a Sleep Out and raised a significant amount of money and donated items

•

Mazenod participates in the Building Bridges Interfaith Program with Jewish, Christian and Islamic schools

•

Year 11s are often given the option of community service initiatives in sitting and talking with the homeless on the year 11 Retreat, teaching English to the children of migrants in Beijing slums, feeding the elderly homeless in Hong Kong, engaging with drop out school aged youth in Beijing.

•

Year 9s join with Avila student for a retreat where they chose from a variety of challenging activities finishing with youth singer Gen Bryant leading praise and worship

•

Year 10 students facilitate the Monash Community Games at Mazenod with students from Monash Special Development School, Springvale Park Special Development School and Glenallen school Year 9 & 10 students volunteered weekly at the Monash Gardens Aged Care Facility

•

Students attended a weekend festival called Rise celebrating faith and culture

•

Year 12 students have two evening masses with parents preceded by dinner

•

Year 12 Students usually received a visit with Catholic singer and storyteller Josh Angrisano and various speakers on faith and life after school.

Learning & Teaching Goals & Intended Outcomes Our major goal for 2020 was to develop our new Learning and Teaching Framework and Guiding Principles.

Our new Learning and Teaching framework was developed in 2020.

•

Mazenod College recognises that young men have particular learning needs. Drawing on research commissioned by the International Boys School Coalition, of which the College is an active member, Dr Michael Reichart and Dr Richard Hawley has identified the core elements for boys' learning. Boys are relational learners and 'learn' their teachers - they choose to learn based as much on teachers as on subjects.

•

Positive and authentic relationships between staff and students, centred around "conversational learning" and founded in mutual respect, are therefore fundamental to what Mazenod does.

•

We use a Visible Learning Framework based on the research of Professor John Hattie to ensure that we are making a positive difference to maximise the learning outcomes of our students. Visible learning occurs when learning is the explicit and transparent goal. By making learning visible, teachers are more empowered to intervene in meaningful ways to enhance student achievement.

•

Teachers use a strategic collection of instructional practices combined to design and deliver well-crafted lessons that explicitly teach content to all students.

Guiding principles developed in 2020:

Mazenod's learning and teaching pedagogical framework are set upon a set of guiding principles that are followed by all teachers and in all subjects. Teachers collaborate to achieve a consistent approach to these principles:

•

Respectful relationships: these underpin our learning and teaching. All members of the community display courtesy and respect to one another.

•

Discipline: the College values and seeks to instil a discipline towards learning, with resilience and a willingness to learn as feature

•

High expectations: regarding behaviour, attitude, commitment and academic performance.

•

Equity: a set curriculum and course delivery and preparation for assessment and assessment tasks that is common across classes within the same subject.

•

Continuity and progression: is seamless across the year levels with evident pathways for student development in particular subject areas.

Personalised: provision for all students including those with individual needs and those with particular gifts and talents. Enhancement pathways, special needs, modified programs and options in assessment for mainstream are all provided.

•

Rigorous and relevant: a robust curriculum that is thorough and challenging. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated with reference to State and National requirements.

•

Lifelong learning: a curriculum that is designed to be relevant as both preparation for future learning demands and a happy and prosperous adult life.

•

Explicit and scaffolded lessons and tasks: explicit step by step instructions are provided, that graduate learning, building from simple tasks to more complex tasks. Our lesson design seeks to provide a scaffold that enables students to complete tasks, together with a clear understanding of what students are learning and why they are doing so. This is further articulated in rubrics for the assessment of tasks and projects.

•

Regular feedback: Mazenod provides regular assessment for students in many forms including both formative and summative. Feedback is provided in a variety of forms including marking sheets, rubrics, written, audio or video teacher comments, peer feedback and selfevaluation. Achievements A major Learning and Teaching Achievement for 2020 was our management of lockdown and growth in approaches to flexible learning.

Mazenod focused on clarity of expectations and structures right from the outset of lockdown keeping things simple and common - while allowing flexibility within that for the early adopters and those more comfortable in the new environment; as structured as following the standard normal bell times every day and recording attendance every lesson. We leveraged existing structures such as teaching team meetings instead of faculty meetings, sharing lesson plans or outlines on common unit pages for each subject, and providing common structures to lessons within a year level team. This strategy simplified, clarified, and bought consistency to the use of our LMS for online delivery; and this in turn supported our students with certainty and daily connection.

Back at school post lockdown significant change occurred with staff wanting to maintain the positive developments such as greater collaboration and sharing. There is a greater willingness to move to increased use of online submission, and online real-time correction and feedback. A willingness to move to online parent-teacher interviews and online or blended information nights as appropriate. Online delivery has led to a greater understanding and confidence in how flipped learning can work. There is also a greater willingness to try and adapt approaches. There are higher levels of trust in the students' ability to be independent.

Value Added: Learning Diversity and Student Learning Support

The Learning Diversity Team at Mazenod is dedicated to supporting the individual learning needs of our students. With a staff of 13, the college is able to offer well-structured Literacy & Numeracy support programs that are vital in ensuring that all students are able to access their learning. In addition, the provision of the Homework Program and social activities such as Film Club provide students with varied opportunities to develop holistically.

In 2020, 215 students were identified as having adjustments made to their program and were submitted in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. Of these 215 students, 172 students were identified as requiring supplementary assistance or substantial assistance. These 172 students accessed Government Funding to assist with ensuring they can access their learning on the same basis as their peers.

Mazenod College offers a comprehensive enhancement program in areas such as Humanities, Music, Mathematics, English, Robotics and Information Technology. The College conducted PAT tests late in 2020 to facilitate the tracking of students and provide alternative data to NAPLAN. The tests were conducted at Years 7-9 in Maths, English and Science.

Our new Data Analysis software Track One, was used to correlate the PAT data with previous years NAPLAN data as well as College Exam and other assessment data from 2020 to identify students whose progress may have been compromised by the COVID lockdown and who may benefit from our structured tutor program instigated early in 2021.

Achievements In 2020 Mazenod introduced visible wellbeing as a whole school approach. This commenced with a partnership with Professor Lea Waters starting with staff training and the introduction of the SEARCH Framework.The visible wellbeing approach complements our existing student wellbeing programs which are delivered at Mazenod in a variety of formats including extended homerooms, seminars, personal and social learning timetabled classes, retreats, camps and dedicated personal development days. All wellbeing programs are designed to address age and stage wellbeing issues.

Visible wellbeing will be our approach to creating resilient, happy and successful young men. The goal of a Visible Wellbeing approach is to make wellbeing visible so that we can proactively intervene and make changes in our students' lives and our own. We do this through acknowledging the negative, but specifically working to amplify the positives and increase overall wellbeing with students and staff consciously thinking about what they SEE, HEAR and FEEL in all situations.

Visible wellbeing is how we will support every student at Mazenod to strive to reach their potential by being intentionally aware of his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.

A major achievement of note in 2020 was our purposeful and structured approach to remote learning that saw all teachers meet their students via Google Meet in all lessons and homerooms.

We maintained as much as possible a consistent routine and a positive connection with our students to support their wellbeing during lockdown periods.

Each Year Level is under the care of a Coordinator and each class has a Homeroom Teacher whose role is primarily pastoral. In addition to our Priests and a supportive group of teachers, the College has the benefit of two full-time Counsellors and a Careers/Pathways Coordinator.

Mazenod has established a Peer Support and Pastoral Care Program which promotes a caring, supportive and friendly environment across the year levels. The program allows senior students to further develop their leadership skills and was also introduced to extend the pastoral care network within the College Community.

Value Added: Student Wellbeing - What we did

A very well developed instrumental music program, with hundreds of students receiving weekly individual music lessons on orchestral instruments and participating in a full range of orchestras, bands and ensembles. Lessons continued in remote learning.

Every student in the school participates in 100 minutes of organised sport each week

•

Participation in every ACC Inter-School Sport that was conducted -many others were cancelled for 2020.

The vast majority of students represented the college in at least one ACC event (Association of Catholic Colleges)

Many students participated in our comprehensive Volleyball program, training and playing weekly, dominating the ACC competitions

60 students participated in the Chess club, receiving weekly tuition and recording record breaking wins in the ACC. Our Open Chess Team won Gold in the State Championships and Silver in the Nationals. Our Middle Years team won Bronze in both the State and the National Championships

Outstanding Debating success at ACC level, and at the Debating Association of Victoria's (DAV) state finals.

The Performing Arts Department held an online Performing Arts Festival in the evening featuring music, dance and film items from all levels

STUDENT SATISFACTION

Students have a positive experience of college life at Mazenod, and this is reflected in a number of ways: •

A very high attendance rate of some 96.2% across all levels

The participation of students in Sport, Music and Community Service, along with our sound academic results, is a testament to the diverse and flourishing culture of our college.

Very high student attendance at major college events such as the Inaugural Mass and in normal years the annual Speech Night at Robert Blackwood hall. Speech Night was cancelled in 2020.

Very high attendance and participation at House Athletics and House Swimming Carnivals

The high number of students that volunteer to help the college, for example, Mazenod College holds an open day and several tours each year and many parents within the community are guided around the school by our current students, who are obviously extremely proud to show off their College

In 2020 the College commissioned MMG Education to survey students and seek feedback on our home-based learning. MMG in collaboration with AHISA surveyed schools across the country. 406 students responded. Scores provided reflect the perceptions of our students. Top performing schools achieve 80% and higher and this is rated as a 'very high' result.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Student's attendance is recorded every morning during Homeroom, and during every period of the day. We record students in Homeroom or whenever they arrive to school after this. Parents are required to ring the school if their child is absent. All school related and long term absences are noted. We then send a system generated SMS message to all parents whose students have been marked absent with no reason given. In 2015 we upgraded our attendance recording methods to capture data for every period electronically, not just Homeroom or the last period.

During COVID remote learning we maintained our normal timetable and continued to record attendance at daily homeroom and in all timetabled classes.

Child Safe Standards Goals & Intended Outcomes In complying with Ministerial Order 870, Mazenod College has initiated its own Child Safe policy that specifically designates responsibility to all members of the college in providing a safe learning environment for all of its students. All community members have a responsibility to minimise the risks that students may be subjected to and have been instructed to immediately act upon any issue that comes to their attention.

Achievements Specifically, Mazenod College has: •

Attended in-service activities conducted by Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VQRA). The Department of Education Training Victoria and Catholic Education Melbourne have guided the Executive in developing the Child Safe Policy

Developed a Code of Conduct that adheres to the guidelines set down by Government Bodies and ensured that this Code was signed and available to all Staff Members, Volunteers and Contractors

Leadership & Management Goals & Intended Outcomes The major goal for 2020 was the full restructure of leadership, including the Deputies and all Positions of Leadership.

The College is entering a period of change, both in regard, programmes and personnel. It is very important to have a clear direction.

Achievements Restructuring of Senior Leaders: On the approval of the Interview Panel and the endorsement of the CEM Representative, College Board Representative, Oblates of Mary Immaculate Representative, College Executive Representative and the College Staff Representative I am pleased to announce the following appointments of College Deputy Principals commencing from 2021.

Deputy Principal Learning & Teaching Mr Matthew Fyfield Deputy Principal Curriculum and Staffing Mr Noel Jenkinson Deputy Principal Students Mr Tim Ford Deputy Principal Operations & Compliance Mr Tony Rolfe The Appointment of two Deputy Principals to the area of Learning and Teaching highlights the College's commitment to developing a contemporary programme that supports: Visible Learning; the utilization of data to improve learning outcomes; the enhancement of staff appraisal and professional learning; continual development of Learning Teams, and the creation of an Explicit Teaching Model that maintains excellence across all facets of the curriculum.

The roles will be distinct. Mr Noel Jenkinson's experience relating to curriculum development, staffing and resource management has been invaluable, particularly as we have been managing our current platforms of Remote Learning. The split recognises the need to have a succession plan for the next decade of learning and will complement Mr Matthew Fyfield's experiences in the classroom, as Faculty Head of Religious Education for six years and his recent PhD studies focussing on Educational Technology.

Mr Tim Ford's appointment to Deputy Principal's - Students role enables the development of our Visible Wellbeing programme and further improves our Personal & Social Learning initiatives. Of course, student management continues to fall under his jurisdiction.

Mr Tony Rolfe's appointment to the role of Deputy Principal - Operations & Compliance and separating the Daily Organization role demonstrates the growing need to oversee building projects, community networks, calendar formation, excursion management, relationships with providers, and all matters compliance, as we develop exciting and safe co-curricular experiences for the students in Sport, Outdoor Ed, Music, Language Tours etc.

A new detailed organisation chart was developed to show all leadership roles under the four pillars of Faith, Learning and Teaching, Student Wellbeing and Organisation and Compliance.

The focus of the four pillars is essentially: Faith and Charism: Oblate Charism and Oblate Leadership, New College Rector, Oblate Youth Team Learning & Teaching: Visible Learning, Explicit Teaching, Data Driven Outcomes, Curriculum & Staffing Students: Visible Wellbeing (Professor Lea Waters) Organization & Compliance: Community Groups and Networks, Middle School Works - Building Development

Restructuring of Positions of Leadership 2021 - 2023: The POL Structure for 2021 to 2023 including the appointments of the Deputy Principals is a significant feature of the Strategic Planning from 2020 to 2024. In response to the 2019 NSIT (National Schools Improvement Tool) that was the model used for the College's review, the new POL Structure is designed to implement the desired changes and innovations. The new structure consists of four pillars: Faith & Charism, Learning & Teaching; Students and Organization & Compliance. The POL structure introduces a new role, Dean of Data, located under the Learning & Teaching pillar to facilitate the data driven outcomes for learning. The new role of Development Manager (Educational Support Officer) is designed to build the various relationships and networks that exist within the Community Groups. The review acknowledged the outstanding success of building community relationships and the Deputy Principal of Organization & Compliance is set to develop further those relationships with a clear understanding of mutual responsibility focussing on matters of compliance.

The personnel that have been appointed to POLs indicate the transitional phase that is currently evident at the College. Young teachers, some with Middle Leadership experience, and others enjoying the responsibilities for the first time featured in many POL positions. Genuinely an exciting time for the College.

Implementation of Data Tracking, Analysis and Recording Systems: As a follow-up to the choice of our new LMS ("Schoolbox"), and in response to our full school review in 2019, the planned adoption of: 1 a new Data Tracking System, Track One, 2 a new internet analysis and monitoring tool, Edquire and 3 a new Human Resources Staff Records system, EMS360; were all postponed to 2021 and will form a component of the 2021 goals and professional learning program.

Description of Professional Learning undertaken in 2020 All teachers at Mazenod College undertook a variety of professional learning activities in 2020, building on projects commenced in 2019 or undertaking new tasks for 2020. Staff again worked in Professional Learning Teams (PLT) as part of the Staff Development Program and also participated in external professional learning activities that complemented the focus of their PLT.

Much of the professional learning time in 2020 for terms 2 and 3 was devoted to preparing for and supporting staff and their subject-based teaching teams through the transition to online learning. This included the use of our LMS and Google Meet for online delivery.

Many staff members again assessed VCAA examinations and the GAT, and participated in the review and writing of VCE Study Designs. They also attended a range of subject association annual conferences and targeted PD. Such professional development provides genuine benefits, both to the teachers involved but also to other teachers at the college.

The most significant professional learning that Mazenod staff participated in was directly targeted to our school improvement agenda: •

An introduction to Visible Wellbeing was delivered by Professor Lea Waters who provided three half-day training sessions for all staff.

College Community Goals & Intended Outcomes Mazenod envisions itself as being a community cooperating together, witnessing Gospel values and responding to a call to service and responsibility to others. We aim to:

1. Provide pastoral care to the individual student 2. Cultivate a friendly and caring atmosphere 3. Achievements College Community Achievements: Mazenod College works in conjunction with our Old Boy associations and Parent Bodies to ensure that the values and teachings of Christ and St Eugene de Mazenod are experienced throughout the wider Community. This ensures that our students can become witnesses to these teachings and have the opportunity to be living examples of Christ's love.

This occurs: In the old boy network on the sport's area and through sporting clubs such as the Old Collegians Football, Soccer, Volleyball and Cricket clubs, as well as providing the opportunity for the physical and intellectually disadvantaged sports person through the Mazenod Panthers a member of the FIDA.

Established a benevolent fund & assists those Mazenod Community members who are in need with financial and emotional support

Through our Parent bodies and their involvement with social events such as Father Son Fishing Days, Mothers' Day Dinners, assistance with Social Justice activities (The Vinnies Winter Sleep out)

Through the provision of Parent Education evenings that assist parents with strategies in raising boys in a hypersexualised society.

Through the College's involvement in the Respectful Relationship program and the Building Bridges Interfaith Dialogue program

Co-Curricular Achievements: •

A very well developed instrumental music program, with hundreds of students receiving weekly individual music lessons on orchestral instruments and participating in a full range of orchestras, bands and ensembles.

Our highly successful annual Musical production "Seussical the Musical" at the Besen Theatre

•

Every student in the school participates in 100 minutes of organised sport each week

•

Participation in every ACC Inter-School Sport

The vast majority of students represented the college in at least one ACC event (Association of Catholic Colleges)

Many students participated in our comprehensive Volleyball program, training and playing weekly, dominating the ACC competitions and winning numerous State and National level honors

60 students participated in the Chess club, receiving weekly tuition and recording record breaking wins in the ACC. Our Open Chess Team won Silver in the State Championships and Middle Years team won Gold in the State and Silver in the National Championships

Our Senior Badminton Team won the ACC Badminton Championship. This Sport is one of the fastest in the world and the team can be very proud of their achievement

Outstanding Debating success at ACC level, and at the Debating Association of Victoria's (DAV) state finals.

Our Public Speakers competed with success at the VCAA's Plain English Speaking competition and the annual Lions Club Youth of the Year competition.

The Performing Arts Department held a Performing Arts Festival in the evening featuring music, dance and film items from all levels

The Music Department held its annual Music Gala evening, with over 200 students participating

A group of music students travelled to Mt Gambier for the Generations in Jazz Music Festival with students from across the region

The Stage Band and the Founders' Ensemble represent the college at the Victorian Schools Music Festival, receiving awards

Our musicians competed in the annual Boroondara Eisteddfod

Groups of students travelled to Japan and to China for two week cultural exchanges

Years 10, 11 and 12 also participate in Mazenod's Social Justice program which includes; Rosies and RE days, Red Cross door knock, retreats, St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout, Community Services and Special Olympics.

A group of 19 Year 10 and 11 students participated in a two week cultural tour to central Australia.

VALUE ADDED

Value Added: Learning & Teaching - What we usually do Much of the following was completed in 2020, but some activities were curtailed or cancelled due to COVID. •

Students from Mazenod College participate in the International Science Competitions and Assessments for Science (ICAS), with many High Distinctions, Distinctions, Credit and Merit Certificates. High Distinction Certificate achievers are rated in the top 1% of all entrants. Statistically 50 % of students from Mazenod College achieve a certificate of credit or higher, an outstanding performance.

•

The Science Talent Search is an annual competition open to all primary and secondary school students in Victoria. The Year 10 Enhancement Class participates in this competition, with a number of bursary winners. Many students from Mazenod College aregiven special mention on their practical investigation tasks from the judges.

•

Students achieve great results in the Australian Mathematics Competition. A very large number of students participate in the competition with numerous High Distinctions (top 3% in Country) and distinctions (top 20% in Country).

•

All year 11s participated in the Careers and Industry conference for three days residential in the city

•

Our Year 7&8 Enhancement students participate in the Da Vinci Decathlon

•

Many of our Literature, Enhancement and Visual Arts students were published in Catholic Educations annual anthology Shared Stories

Our Year 8 Enhancement Students participate in a semester long Robotics course using the Lego Mindstorms kits

Students participated in our Book Club and Kerbal Space Program in the Library

A large number of students participate in the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge with many successfully meeting the challenge to read the required number of books between February and August

Year Ten Japanese and Italian students participate in interschool language clubs with other local schools studying these languages. This activity strengthens our bond with other nearby Catholic schools, networking and language learning.

Value Added: Instrumental Music Program The number of students receiving individual music lessons in the exceptional College Instrumental Program at the end of 2020 was in excess of 300. Lessons continued online during lockdown.

They study the following instruments with our team of 13 instrumental music teachers: Bassoon, Cello, Cornet, Double Bass, Euphonium, Flute, French Horn, Oboe, Percussion, Saxaphone, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin

They have the opportunity to join the following range of ensembles: Junior Strings, Boyle Strings, Chamber Strings, Chet Baker Band, Concert Band Dorsey Band, Monk Big Band, Flute Ensemble, Founders Ensemble Junior Vocal, Liturgy Choir, Senior Vocal Stage Band, Swing Band, Symphonic Wind Band, Symphony Orchestra

Parents have very positive regard for and strong affiliation with the college as reflected by:

In 2020 we organised our parent-teacher interviews online and had a record number of interviews booked, well in excess of 7500. Parents responded very favourably, the majority preferring the new mode.

In 2020 we organised many parent information evenings in an online format. They were very well attended and much positive feedback was given.

Future Directions Building Plans

The next phase of development for the College is the eight-stage redevelopment and refurbishment of the original buildings. Ensuring students experience contemporary learning spaces that meet the learning and teaching outcomes enabling students to collaborate, design and be inspired was the educational blueprint for our architects and designers. Spaces that will meet our learning needs for the next fifty years.

The Build Features:

An extensive Learning Centre catering for the diverse needs of all students. Classrooms renovated to deliver spaces that are comfortable, adaptable and accommodate a technologically changing landscape.

A dedicated Language Room with linguistic resources that include sound booths.

Refurbished Science laboratories that promote the dynamic changes occurring in the STEM (Science/ Technology/ Engineering/ Math) space. Rejuvenated and extended cafeteria facility to accommodate students and community groups with seating available for large groups.

Modern staff room that can be utilised by our community groups for gatherings and functions.

The project scheduled to commence in 2020 has been delayed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

These building works are scheduled to commence in 2021.
