GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome to the Mazenod College Instrumental Music Program. This booklet provides a general overview of the requirements for learning a musical instrument at Mazenod College including information on tuition, fees and examinations. Learning a musical instrument has been proven to enhance cognitive learning skills and is also a fun social platform for students to engage with their peers. Students often gain professional work outside of school after the experience of playing in an ensemble. Mazenod College prides itself on a broad, high quality Music Program encouraging positive interaction with students of varying stages of development in a fun learning environment. We also have a number of instrumental and vocal ensembles in which students can become involved. The Instrumental Music Program is based on an orchestral format where lessons are of a co-curricular nature and take place during school hours on a rotating timetable basis. Our music program is heavily subsidised, with lessons costing between 50% - 75% less than the Victorian Music Teachers’ Association standard rates. Some components of the program are provided free of charge. More information can be found under ‘Cost of Tuition’ and ‘Hire of School Musical Instrument’. The College Music Program prides its strong connection with past students who often are involved in the musical orchestra pit and other aspects of the music program.
1
MUSIC TUITION COMMENCING LESSONS
Students commencing lessons are required to commit to a minimum of one full semester. All students will be automatically re-enrolled for the following semester unless notice in writing has been received by the Music Department. Please complete the Music Tuition Application Form provided with this booklet.
DISCONTINUING LESSONS
Termination of Music Tuition is possible at the END of any Semester provided that notice in writing is received by the set dates and all outstanding fees are paid. The Music Department requires a minimum of 8 weeks notice in writing if your son intends to discontinue lessons. We also request you complete a ‘Withdrawal Form’ which must be handed/emailed to the music office, along with any hired instruments. Cut-off dates to discontinue music lessons in 2027 are as follows: 14 May to cease lessons at the end of Semester 2 15 October to cease lessons at the end of the school year (preferred) 31 Jan 2026 final cut-off date prior to automatic re-enrolment for Term 1, 2027 Please note: Until notification in writing is received, your son’s tuition fees will automatically roll over to the next semester.
TIMETABLING AND ATTENDANCE OF LESSONS
All co-curricular lessons are timetabled during normal school hours on a rotational basis (8.50am – 3.10pm) during standard academic classes. It is important that your son is responsible for knowing his schedule. He should arrive to the lesson 5 minutes prior to his scheduled time. It is also important to understand that it is the responsibility of the student to catch up on any missed work. Students must sign in and out at Music Reception.
PRACTICE
Regular home practice is essential in succeeding to learn an instrument. We recommend that students practice for a minimum of 20 minutes, 5 days per week. To assist and encourage this practice, it is helpful to provide a suitable place to practice with this becoming part of their daily homework routine. It is very important that parents are supportive and encouraging of the practice routine. In the event where there is evidence of no practice or if the student is not reaching the expected goals, parents may be contacted by their son’s Instrumental Teacher.
STUDENT ABSENCE
Should attendance at a lesson / rehearsal / performance not be possible due to illness etc., notification is required prior to the lesson either to the teacher via email or to the music office via phone. Failure of notification will result in ‘failed to attend’ on the student’s permanent record. The onus is on the student to let the teacher know if they are not available for their lesson. 2
REPORTS AND EXAMINATIONS Every student receives a written report at the end of each semester. External assessment is available to students wishing to enter examinations conducted by the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Students will be notified by their instrumental teacher about the suitability of such an examination and parents can contact the teacher to discuss if necessary. Undertaking such an examination requires a clear agreement between the parent, the teacher and the student. Mazenod College encourages all students to take initiative to organise an accompanist and rehearsal times for their examination. Information about accompanying fees and suggested accompanists are available from the Music Office.
5 REASONS TO SIT AN AMEB EXAM 1. TO ASSIST IN SETTING GOALS
Preparing for an exam requires a significant amount of planning and hard work. Exams provide clearly defined goal posts that are a powerful motivating force.
2. TO ENCOURAGE THE EVELOPMENT OF A BROADER RANGE OF SKILLS AMEB exams challenge students not only to perform repertoire on their instrument or subject of choice, but also to demonstrate other important skills like sight reading, technical prowess, aural recognition and general knowledge which support their overall learning.
4. TO GET CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK
Every candidate that completes an exam receives a personal written report from their examiner. This independent feedback encourages the student to progress by highlighting areas of strength and weakness under performance conditions to help guide students in their development.
5. TO RECOGNISE ACHIEVEMENT
Each successful candidate receives an official certificate recognising their achievement. This certificate is a tangible reminder of a milestone achieved and a source of great pride.
3. TO GAIN VALUABLE PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE For many people, one of the hardest parts of taking an exam is presenting your program on stage in front of an audience of strangers. Performing in front of others helps to develop poise and confidence.
There is overwhelming evidence demonstrating that childhood music and speech education leads to well-rounded, high performing adults across all fields. For students to set and then achieve a goal such as an exam, they are learning the value of hard work, discipline, and the incredible feats they are capable of in their lives ahead.

BUYING YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT?
It is worthwhile for parents to consider the advantages of owning rather than hiring an instrument. This is especially recommended in the case of the Flute, Clarinet, Violin and Trumpet. Instrumental Teachers are always happy to discuss any instrument purchase with you.
HOW TO APPLY Complete the ‘Instrumental Music Tuition Application’ online on the Mazenod Music Tile. Printed copies are available by emailing musicreception@mazenod.vic.edu.au

CHOOSING YOUR INSTRUMENT Choosing which musical instrument to learn is a very important decision as students will spend many years learning that instrument. Most orchestral instruments are taught at Mazenod College, however some choices are limited by the age and physical size of the student. Teachers are happy to offer guidance and discuss options with students. Co-curricular tuition is available to boys in Years 7-12 on the following instruments: Woodwind Clarinet Flute Oboe Saxophone Bassoon
Brass Euphonium French Horn Trombone Trumpet Tuba
Strings Cello Double Bass Viola Violin
Percussion
Voice
Year 7 Students can commence on most instruments offered except the Saxophone, unless the student owns his own instrument, or has previous experience. Students intending to play the Saxophone generally start on either the Clarinet (the preferred choice), Flute or Oboe.
INSTRUMENTAL HIRE INSURANCE CLAIM All hired instruments are the property of Mazenod College and have been hired to your son for the purpose of music lessons. This instrument remains the property of the college, and as such, is covered by insurance for accidental damage or loss. However, should it become necessary for the school to lodge an insurance claim, $1000 excess is payable, which must be reimbursed by the parent involved. We recommend you consider having the instrument covered by your own insurance policy for the duration of hire. Damage to, or loss of the instrument is the parent’s responsibility and in such cases the cost of repair or replacement will be charged to the parent’s account.
STORING INSTRUMENTS Instrumental storage is available for students to store their instruments during the day, however we expect students to take their instrument home every day and during school holidays. Your son’s instrument must be taken home over the weekend and during the holidays for practice. Instruments can be affected by the weather so please ensure your son keeps his instrument in a safe place indoors when at home. 5
ENSEMBLES REHEARSALS A range of performance ensembles are offered to Mazenod music students. An Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule is published for students on MazCom. We encourage students to take initiative to be aware of rehearsal time. Rehearsals are held in the Founders’ Complex, starting at 7:45 am and during lunchtimes. In the event of an upcoming performance, extra rehearsals will be held during or after school. Parents will be notified of scheduled extra rehearsals times. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: ENROLMENT 1. Cost of lessons is $500 per semester for Year 7 students and $550 per semester for all other year levels. Instrument hire costs (if needed) are $150 per semester (excluding percussion instruments). These fees are at a reduced price and are subsidised by the college. Payment is due as indicated on invoices sent out by the school’s finance department. Any concerns with payment should be directed to the music office or the finance department. 2. Students must be able to demonstrate full involvement in the program including completing all work requirements, punctual attendance at lessons and/or ensembles / rehearsals / performances. 3. Should attendance at a lesson / rehearsal / performance not be possible due to illness etc., notification is required prior to lesson either to the teacher via email, or to the music office via phone. 4. Should a student repeatedly fail to attend required activities, the Director of Music will make contact with the student and / or parents for further discussions about involvement in the program. 5. The duration of a lesson is 25 minutes for students, beginner - intermediate students. Once a student reaches a higher standard, it is at the teacher’s discretion to give the student more lesson time (i.e. a 50 minute lesson). Teachers will be in communication with parents about a student’s progress should they wish to change their situation. 6. Lessons work on a rotational basis around the school timetables with the aim of avoiding students being taken out of the same classroom lesson every week. However, this may not always be possible to avoid. Should there be any issues relating to lessons clashing or other activities students need to attend during their lesson time, students are to discuss this with their teachers prior to their lesson time. 7. Lesson times can be changed at the teacher’s discretion. It is the responsibility of the student to keep track of when their lesson time is through use of the school communication platforms. Students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers as much as possible about their lesson times. 8. Should a student wish to withdraw from lessons, 8 weeks’ notice is required. Refer to dates on Page 2 of this booklet. The Withdrawal From Instrumental Music form must be completed, signed by parents and returned to the student’s teacher. Any outstanding fees are due upon termination of lessons. Fees are non-refundable unless under special circumstances which should be discussed with the Director of Music. 9. Students are to purchase any other sundries which are not part of the starter kit. These vary depending on the instrument and can be purchased at the Music Office. 10. It is at the discretion of the teacher for a student to undergo AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) assessments. This is an additional fee. If a teacher is not satisfied with the student’s progression, they may wish for the student not to undergo assessment until they are ready. 11
TERMS AND CONDITIONS: INSTRUMENTAL HIRE 1. Cost for instrument hire is $150.00 per semester. These costs are in addition to the school fees and are distributed by the school Finance Department. Any queries relating to music fees should be directed to the music office. 2. Damage, Theft or Loss: As school instruments are hired out to students for lesson related purposes, the instruments remain the property of Mazenod College. As such, they are covered by insurance. However, the hirer is responsible for any repairs due to mishandling when the instrument is in possession of the student. 3. Once a student starts hiring, it is rolled over yearly until the music office is notified otherwise. 4. Some instruments may not be available for hire due to a high volume of interest in that particular instrument, in which case, we would suggest either buying your own instrument or selecting a different instrument to learn. 5. Instruments should be stored in a cool, dry place where the instrument cannot be accidentally tripped over or mistreated in some way. When at school, the instrument must be stored in the instrument storage area or their teachers practice room. It must be stowed away against a wall and out of the way of walkways. 6. No person, other than the student, must be allowed to play or handle the instrument. 7. Sundries (i.e. Reeds, Strings, Valve oil / Slide oil) are all to be purchased by the person hiring the instrument. 8. When returning an instrument, it must be handed back to the music office in a clean condition and good working order along with your signed Withdrawal Form. 9. Failure to comply with any of the above will result in immediate termination of his agreement, whereupon the instrument must be promptly returned to the music office.
