Jazz trombonist, writer and certified tour guide May Peters (54) left for Puerto Rico in 1994 to specialize in salsa and afro-Caribbean music, there she played in the band of salsa romántica-icon Eddie Santiago and stayed. Peters lives in the capital San Juan. A city to be lyrical about, although Puerto Rico has not recovered yet from hurricane Maria. Peters: ‘The tropical, the mystical, the burning sun, and the refreshing sea breeze, the history, the divergent architecture, it all long belongs to San Juan. The same as the warm hearted people and the rousing rhythms everywhere.’ May recorded a cd with the music of female Puerto Rican composers, but plays as well a rumba on the beach. ‘a woman without teeth , who shouts with her hands in the air ‘¡Qué vivan las mujeres!’ and a cheap beer offered are priceless presents.’
