his year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Mayor’s Alliance, and the eighth year in our ten-year strategic plan to transform New York City

into a no-kill community. We continued to drive down euthanasia at Animal

Care & Control of New York City (AC&C), while intake at AC&C continued to decline. In 2012, intake and euthanasia reached historic lows, and for the first time in AC&C’s history, euthanasia fell well below 10,000, to 8,252.

Mission

In cooperation with the City of New York, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals seeks to establish partnerships with nonprofit animal organizations to develop creative solutions to deal with issues of animal care and control. Through our multi-year program, we will help these animal advocacy groups reach their highest potential to effectively place and spay/neuter New York City’s dogs and cats.

2012 Accomplishments In 2012, euthanasia fell to 8,252, marking the first time in AC&C’s history that fewer than 9,000 cats and dogs were euthanized.

Major drivers of the reduced euthanasia rate include vigorous community spay/neuter efforts and transfers to AC&C’s adoption partners.

Celebrating Medical & Boarding Fund

Adoption Events Large, multi-group adoption events like Adoptapalooza, Whiskers in Wonderland, and Broadway Barks offer adopters a convenient way to meet hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits awaiting new homes.

This Allianceadministered program, created

by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore in 2003, provides medical treatment and boarding for sick and injured animals awaiting adoption.

Rescue Group and Shelter Support From animal transport and adoption events to specialized training and grants, the Alliance provides the tools to help rescue organizations excel and save more lives.

Support to AC&C The Alliance has provided funding for AC&C’s New Hope Department, and special training for AC&C staff, to increase the number of animals saved at AC&C shelters.

Wheels of Hope Since 2005, more than 56,000 animals have journeyed toward a new future in our Wheels of Hope transport vehicles.

Awareness Building Harnessing the power of traditional and social media, public relations, advertising, and website and print communications, the Alliance uses every avenue possible to promote pet adoption and responsible pet ownership.

Disaster Relief In times of crisis, as during Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the Alliance—a member of the Animal Planning Task Force of NYC’s Office of Emergency Management—stepped up with emergency animal transport, co-sheltering support, volunteers, and leadership, and helped to save countless lives.

Saving Lives Lost and Found When City budget cuts forced the closing of AC&C’s Lost & Found Program, the Alliance partnered with the ASPCA and AC&C and launched a new Lost & Found Program that utilizes volunteers.

NYC Feral Cat Initiative As a resource for NYC certified feral cat caretakers and the general public, we provide guidance, information, specialized training, transport, and hands on assistance to facilitate trap-neuterreturn (TNR) in NYC.

Capacity Building Grants Alliance grants for adoption centers, isolation rooms, and other enhancements have enabled our Alliance Participating Organizations to do more, and do it better.

Helping Pets and People In Crisis Collaborates with traditional social services to help families facing domestic violence and other personal crises keep their pets safe.

Microchipping Since 2005, more than 2,700 dogs and cats have received permanent ID protection at our free and low-cost microchip clinics.

Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) AC&C is the largest pet rescue organization in the northeastern United States. It is New York City’s municipal shelter system, operating in all five boroughs, including three full-service shelters and two receiving centers. AC&C is responsible for rescuing, caring for, and finding homes for New York City’s homeless and abandoned animals. In 2012, AC&C, an Alliance Participating Organization (APO), took in 28,921 animals.

North Shore Animal League America North Shore Animal League America is an APO headquartered in Port Washington, NY. It is the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world.

Since 1944, The Animal League’s mission has been to save the lives of pets through adoption, rescue, spay/neuter, and advocacy initiatives. Although located in New York, The Animal League reaches across the country to rescue, nurture, and adopt approximately 20,000 pets into loving homes every year. The Animal League regularly loans its Mobile Adoption Units to fellow APOs for weekend adoption events.

Maddie’s Fund Maddie’s Fund® is a family foundation endowed by the founder of Workday and ®

PeopleSoft, Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl. Maddie’s Fund is helping to achieve and sustain a no-kill nation by providing solutions to the most challenging issues facing the animal welfare community. In January 2005, Maddie’s Fund awarded a seven-year, multi-million-dollar grant to the Alliance to administer the Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project in New York City and the Maddie’s® Spay/Neuter Project in New York City. In 2011, Maddie’s Fund awarded an additional one-year grant to the Alliance to pay for spay/neuter for New York City’s stray and feral community cats.

ASPCA The ASPCA® was the first humane society established in the Western Hemisphere, and today is one of the largest in the world.

A national organization based in New York City, the ASPCA is a founding member of the Alliance, and has consistently provided major financial support over the years. The ASPCA offers a variety of programs in New York City, including pet adoption, affordable spay/neuter services to the public, its own humane law enforcement team, and a groundbreaking veterinary forensics team and mobile animal CSI unit.

Special Partners Petco Foundation The Petco Foundation is a longtime supporter of pet adoption and a strong advocate for bringing adoptable animals to the people.

Hundreds of adoption groups across the country, including many Alliance Participating Organizations in and around New York City, routinely show their adoptable animals at Petco locations. In 2007, the Petco Foundation donated a new transport vehicle to our Wheels of Hope program, and in 2011, made a generous donation of a new mobile adoption van to the Alliance to help increase pet adoptions in New York City. The Foundation also has provided grant funding for Alliance large adoption events, including Adoptapalooza, and training efforts.
