On Monday, March 7, 2016, MPAC held a reception for all students who participated in the contest. Over one hundred people, including the artists, their friends and family attended this special reception where the winners of the 2016 MPAC Program Cover Art Contest were announced. Ryan Watson, Junior at Randolph High School, Savanna Templeton, Junior at Randolph High School, and Veronica Theobald, Junior at Randolph High School are the three winners who will have their pieces printed on the cover of MPAC’s program books to be seen by tens of thousands of the Theatre’s patrons.

The Hit Men: Former Stars of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were a golden era for songwriting. During that era, acts like Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and other big name chart-busting groups created beloved hits that have been heard for generations and are woven into America’s consciousness.

Now, some of these artists instrumental in the success of these songs have reunited to form THE HIT MEN. Not Broadway actors, or a tribute band, they are the real performers who created the music and memories.

The band consists of five legendary performers from Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Carly Simon, Tommy James and the Shondells, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Elton John & Kiki Dee, Carole King, Chicago, Barry Manilow and many others.

During their performance, THE HIT MEN share great back stories and anecdotes from their days in recording studios and on the concert circuit; it’s a great look back through rock & roll history from the guys who lived and breathed the experience.

The Hit Men are: LEE SHAPIRO In 1973, at 19, Lee Shapiro joined Frankie Valli as one of the legendary Four Seasons. As keyboardist/ musical director, Lee was the arranger on the multimillion sellers "Oh, What A Night" and "Who Loves You". In the 1980's Lee collaborated with hit songwriters L. Russell Brown, Sandy Linzer and Irwin Levine, writing music for the hot recording artists of the day. In 1990, Lee formed Lee Shapiro Music, a creative company providing music for advertising and the media. Countless TV themes and commercials were created for NBC, CBS, ABC, Coca Cola, Budweiser, and more. In 1991, Lee collaborated with Barry Manilow in the production of his show "Copacabana, The Musical". In 1999, Lee created the "must have" toys of 2000 and 2001, "Rock N Roll Elmo" and "Rock N' Roll Ernie" for Mattel/ Fisher-Price. Located in New Jersey, Lee Shapiro has been on the NYC music scene for more than three decades. "Leaving Manhattan School of Music at 19 to become one of Frankie Valli’s Four Seasons gave me the opportunity to see the world and perfect my craft. Orchestrations and arrangements were written on planes and in hotel rooms and performed the same night, sometimes without rehearsal." Playing to sell-out

audiences in venues such as the London Palladium, The Sydney Opera House, The Grand Ole Opry and Madison Square Garden gave Lee the vehicle to meet and ultimately collaborate with stars ranging from Barry Manilow and Tommy James to the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, amid the success of Jersey Boys, Lee had a discussion with his friend of 40 years, Frankie Valli. Soon after, he called fellow 4 Season, Gerry Polci, who agreed that it was time to “do it again” and The Hit Men was formed.

GERRY POLCI began his professional career at 14, playing drums, singing at private parties and nightclubs throughout the TriState area. Gerry entered Montclair State University as a Music Education major, and began studying as a protégé of renowned drummer and technician Joe Morello, before taking a leave of absence to pursue a professional career as a drummer. In February of 1973, Gerry became one of Frankie Valli’s celebrated Four Seasons. Gerry's recordings with the Seasons became worldwide hits, including “Who Loves You", “Silver Star", on which Gerry sang lead vocal; the song became a #1 record in England for three weeks. “Dec. '63, Oh, What A Night,” on which Gerry sang lead vocal, was the best selling record the Four Seasons ever had, and was on "Billboard's Hot 100" for 54 weeks. During his tenure with The Four Seasons, Gerry recorded drums for television shows (i.e.

The White Shadow and The Rockford Files), commercials, pursued original artist projects, and worked as the musical director on a series of Barry Manilow TV specials. In 1990, Gerry retired from The Four Seasons and returned to New Jersey, where he completed his Music Education degree at Montclair State University. Upon graduation, Gerry was offered a music teaching position in New Providence, NJ, where he taught for 20 years, while continuing to perform in the Tri-State area and becoming a founding member of The Hit Men. Gerry retired from teaching in 2015, and now resides in Florida with his beautiful bride, Rhea Chiles, and continues his passion for music, teaching and advocacy for the arts and children with his wife.

JIMMY RYAN started playing guitar at ten years old and began performing for audiences at fifteen. By seventeen he had his first recording contract and by eighteen,

scored his first hit record as lead guitarist, vocalist and co-songwriter with The Critters.

The band began as a high school project and ended up a national phenomenon with three top hits, "Younger Girl," "Mr. Dieingly Sad," and "Don't Let The Rain Fall Down on Me" which Jimmy penned, as well as several chart records including, "Marrying Kind of Love," "Bad Misunderstanding," and "Touch & Go." When the Critters split up in 1969, Jimmy continued his career as lead guitarist, backup vocalist, often arranger, and occasional co-writer with Carly Simon, recording such hits as "Anticipation," "You're So Vain," the Academy Award winning song, "Let The River Run" and many more. His working relationship with Carly spanned twenty one years, and they remain close friends to this day. Jimmy has also recorded albums with many other artists, most notably Cat Stevens and Jim Croce, receiving a gold record for each, as well as recording with Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, John Entwhistle, Jim Webb, Elton John and Kiki Dee, The Doors, Matthew Fischer and many more. When not performing with "The Hit Men," Jimmy composes music for film and TV under his alter ego, James Ryan. To date, he has scored 38 films as well as award-winning Documentaries for NBC, CBS, two Winter Olympics and the theme for the Paralympics.

He has composed music for USA Network, Discovery Channel, PBS, ESPN, Lifetime, WE TV, A&E, Showtime, Comedy Central, Food Network, Yes Network, History, and NOVA, as well as music for hundreds of radio & TV commercials. His news themes are featured on CNBC, NBC News, CBS News, Telemundo Noticerio and ABC News programs. The Smithsonian Institution is currently featuring two films that Jimmy scored. The George Washington Museum in Mount Vernon is featuring five films with Jimmy’s music, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia is currently featuring Jimmy's music in their introductory presentation of "The Liberty Bell." Jimmy is a founding member of The Hit Men and has been their lead guitarist, co-arranger and colead singer since 2010.

LARRY GATES has been performing, recording and producing great music for over 30 years. During his years as a New York City music composer/producer, Larry has received 22 Clio Awards, 2 Gold Awards, and other prestigious national honors. His music has been used for radio, TV, film and industrial use. As a composer and lyricist, Larry has

co-written songs with Desmond Child (multi Grammy awards), Larry Hochman (Tony and Emmy award winner), Izzy James, Lee Shapiro and long-time collaborator Daniel Freiberg (Platinum Record and Grammy award winner). Larry has worked with some of the biggest names in the music business, such as: Tommy James, Janis Ian, Rick Derringer, Richie Havens, Dion, Desmond Child, Bon Jovi, Carole King, Vanessa Williams, Herbie Hancock, Paul Schaffer and many more. As a vocalist and instrumentalist, Larry has been heard on numerous national commercials including Toys R Us, Nestle, Kodak, Minwax, Burger King, Weight Watchers, Sports Illustrated, Hasbro and many others. Now, in addition to producing albums for other artists, He currently working on his own album which will include original songs as well as covers of some favorite classics. Longtime friend and former Four Seasons member Lee Shapiro is co-producing. We are both very proud of the project which should be released later this year.

RUSS VELAZQUEZ. A Bronx native, Russ is an award winning & Emmy nominated Composer/ Singer/Arranger & Producer for TV, radio & flm. A first call session singer & guitarist for over 30 years he has performed on thousands of recording sessions singing on hundreds of radio & TV spots including Burger King, Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, McDonald’s, Sprite, UPS, FedEx, Budweiser, ESPN, Cheerios, Pizza Hut, Dodge, Ford, US Army, Gillette, and sang alongside Michael Bolton, Luther Vandross, Patti Austin, Vickie Sue Robinson, Lisa Fischer, Jocelyn Brown & Marc Cohn. Russ has also worked and performed with many diverse artistssuch as Sting, Carole King, the Ramones, LL Cool J, Korn, Patty Smyth, Jimmy Webb, Linda Eder, Sophie B. Hawkins, Elmer Bernstein, C&C Music Factory, Andrew Gold, Phoebe Snow, Martin Short & Mike Meyers.

He has performed on The Tonight Show, David Letterman, SNL, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America to name a few.

Russ just recently worked with singer Carrie Underwood & Academy Award-nominated director Wes Anderson. He is a 3 time Emmy nominated Composer/Arranger for his work on Sesame St. Russ appeared on Broadway as one of the lead singers & guitarists in “Rock & Roll the First 5000 Years” and was one of the original lead singers and producer, arranger of the popular children's group The Sugarbeats and is currently touring with The Hit Men as well as continuing his session work.

James Van Praagh James Van Praagh is considered a spiritual pioneer and one of the worlds’s most celebrated and respected spiritual teachers working today. Yanni YANNI is a legendary composer and live performer who has brought hundreds of millions of fans and fellow world citizens together via his concerts, with countless more experiencing the magic of his music through television broadcasts. One of public television’s all-time top fundraisers, YANNI recently played two sold-out concerts at the historic 16th-century Castillo San Felipe Del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The dates were the first-ever performances at this recognized UNESCO Heritage Site, and the shows were filmed in high-definition and recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. YANNI: Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico makes its nationwide public television debut on March 3, 2012, marking the composer’s tenth collaboration with PBS. YANNI: Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico is set for CD and DVD release by Sony Music on April 17, also the kick-off date for YANNI’s world tour, which begins in North America and encompasses legs in South America and China. The new title spotlights YANNI and his orchestra performing audience favorites including “Truth of Touch,” “Voyage” and “Vertigo” from Yanni’s latest studio album, Truth of Touch (2011). Also featured is a new version of Yanni’s signature song “Nightingale,” and other classics that have not been recorded in decades, including “The End of August,” “The Rain Must Fall,” “Felitsa,” “Ode To Humanity,” plus two encores: “Niki Nana” and “One Man's Dream.”

Yanni’s performances at Castillo San Felipe Del Morro represent a 20-year dream come true for the artist. The shows also connect the famed Puerto Rican landmark with other iconic sites that have played host to Yanni’s spectacular concerts including the Acropolis in Greece, the Taj Mahal in India, and the Forbidden City in China (he was the first western performer to play at the latter two).

Truth of Touch, released in 2011, returned YANNI to the contemporary instrumental form that made him an international superstar. The album—his 19th overall and 16th studio release—is YANNI’s first collection of primarily instrumental music since 2003. It was recorded with producersongwriter Ric Wake, YANNI’s key collaborator on his last two albums, Yanni Voices and the Spanish-language Yanni Voces. The project grew organically out of a six-month break

from touring and recording.

Born Yanni Chryssomallis in southern Greece, YANNI came to the U.S. to attend the University of Minnesota, which gave him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005. He studied psychology, but ultimately dedicated himself to music. At school, he played with the group Chameleon before moving to Los Angeles, where he released his first album, Optimystique, in 1980.

YANNI delved into instrumental composing, and had his first platinum album with Reflections of Passion in 1990. Two years later, Dare To Dream netted his first GRAMMY nomination; its follow up, In My Time, earned another nod. YANNI’s major breakthrough came with 1993’s Yanni Live at the Acropolis, an album/video/PBS project seen by half a billion people in 65 countries. It marked the beginning of YANNI’s long association with PBS, and built a truly global audience for his music. To date, YANNI has sold more than 35 million albums globally, and his 2003 autobiography, Yanni In Words, made the New York Times bestseller list. His music is also a staple as a soundtrack for television, especially major sporting events, including the Olympic Games since 1988.

Over the past several years, YANNI’s ongoing studio explorations have resulted in more than 300 songs. He also extensively toured, performing sold-out concerts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia—where the Chinese government invited YANNI to adopt a panda, an honor usually reserved for countries rather than individuals. He named her “Santorini,” which means “peace” in Greek, and is also the title of one of his best-known compositions.

Even as the road beckons once again, YANNI’s heart also remains in studio with all the music he’s created of late. “I’ve been having fun,” he says. “What I've learned is when a song hits you, when something moves you to write, it’s an emotion. All of life comes together, and you have to follow it. I want to take my audiences on a journey. They don’t know what's coming next, but I promise it will be a pleasant surprise.”

The Summit: The Manhattan Transfer Meets Take 6 THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER The Manhattan Transfer has remained an important part of musical history for over forty years. The legendary quartet has won 10 Grammys of 20 nominations, has been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and continues to wow audiences with live performances arounf the world. The Manhattan Transfer is comprised of Cheryl Bentyne, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Trist Curless, who recently stepped into the shoes of the group’s founder, Tim Hauser, after his recent passing. With worldwide record sales in the millions, the group topped the charts consistently for decades with their melodic and jazz infused vocals.

The group was founded by Tim Hauser when he was paying his bills by driving a New York City cab and aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet that could embrace varied musical styles, and still create something wholly unique in the field of American popular song. While driving, he met the first members of the legendary group -- Laurel Massé and Janis Siegel. Alan Paul, who was appearing in the Broadway cast of “Grease” at the time, was recommended as the additional male voice and the four became The Manhattan Transfer on October 1, 1972.

Cheryl Bentyne joined The Manhattan Transfer in 1979, replacing Laurel.

In 1974 the group began performing regularly at New York City cabaret venues.

By the end of the year they were the top live attraction in NYC. They were signed to Atlantic Records and released their selftitled debut album in 1975. The second single, a remake of the gospel classic “Operator,” gave the group their first national hit. The band was soon tapped to helm a weekly hour-long summer replacement comedyvariety show, which premiered on CBS on August 10, 1975.

The current incarnation of the quartet had its first album in 1979, Extensions, which earned them another smash with “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone.” The vocal remake of the classic “Birdland” became recognized as the group’s anthem, and earned them their first two Grammy Awards, for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental and Best Arrangement for Voices. In 1981, they became the first group ever to win Grammy Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year – Best Pop Performance by a

Duo or Group with Vocal for “Boy From New York City,” and Best Jazz Performance, Duo or Group for “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)”.

That was followed by “Route 66.”The next two years, the group won consecutive Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group. The 12 Grammy nominations they received for Vocalese in 1985 made it the single greatest Grammy nominated album in one year to date, and cemented the group’s status as one of the most important and innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music. The band’s next studio album, the ground breaking “Brasil”, won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Their Grammy wins continued into the ‘90s.

In 2008, An Acapella Christmas became a top selling record and they expanded their catalog to include recorded children’s music and different genres of swing music. The group has also recorded with an impressive roster of artists – Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Frankie Valli and their music has been featured in numerous TV shows and films.

With worldwide sales in the millions, awards by the dozen, and sold-out world tours, The Manhattan Transfer continue to record and tour, with many more surprises to come.

Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into a brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. Two weeks later at the behest of legendary Producer Phil Ramone, Take 6 thrilled a sold out audience at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards performing with and honoring legendary singersongwriter Ben E. King on his classic "Stand

By Me." As a group that knows no musical bounds, they then brought the house down with their tribute to folk icon Woody Guthrie with This Land Is Your Land.

Take 6 has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980. The group eventually became known as Alliance but when they signed to Reprise Records in 1987 they found that there was another group with the same name, so they became Take 6. Their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics and they’ve never slowed down.

What makes the music and the group last this long? The answers are direct and simple: faith, friendship, respect, and love of music. From their exceptional Christmas Show, to their innovative Symphony shows, these qualities are at the heart of the Take 6 phenomenon.

CMT Presents Jennifer Nettles with 2016 Next Women of Country Tour with Brandy Clark and special guests Lindsay Ell and Tara Thompson JENNIFER NETTLES Every few years, whether one is aware or not, we humans tend to recreate ourselves. For me it is some of the most fun "recreation" that exists. That is why I am singing from the rafters (pun intended) in celebration of my new solo project: "That Girl".

Being a musician can be very interactive. I like to share my music with my fans. I like to perform my songs in front of an audience.

And yet, while this sharing is integral, there is additionally a very singular, isolated and narcissistic reward: the continual discovery of oneself. (In this case, of myself ).

In Sugarland I have learned much of both who I am and who I am not. Even with all of our success, I have had the deep desire to share other parts of myself. To prove some things to myself. And, to just simply shake it up and do something different, perhaps scary, and certainly fresh and new.

Upon the release of "That Girl" the album, it will have been almost four years since I started steering my ship in the direction of a solo venture. Reinvention takes processing, evaluation, planning, time. And so, four years ago, I began. Again.

I started writing for this project with allowance and openness. I had no idea where it would lead, but I wanted to follow in faith.

Ideas sprung from walks, from photographs, from solitary moments sitting at my piano playing around. I called old writer friends, new writer friends, and made serendipitous connections based on gut instincts or random conversations. I was curious, open, interested. And, I also got pregnant.

Indeed, the Universe was conspiring with me on my theme of transformation. I was changing from the inside out. Living metaphor. The last third of my pregnancy was one of the most prolific writing times in my life. In part because I was ready and in part because I was actually off the road and had the time. I learned from it: make time for this.

I enjoy a good deadline. I had set Spring of 2013 as a tentative goal for going into the studio. My son would be 4(ish) months old and I thought that would be a good time to jump into giving birth to a record after having delivered my child. I had a collection of songs. I needed a producer who would

understand what I wanted for this album and who would support my vision of where I wanted to take my music and my voice. My manager simply asked who would be my dream producer. My answer was immediate.

People have asked, "How did you come to work with Rick Rubin?" The answer is both humble and simple: a phone call. To my excitement, a phone call gave way to a dialogue about what I wanted sonically for this project and what I had written. Writing work tapes, not fully produced demos, became the backbone of conversations discussing which songs needed work and rework, and which ones felt closer to ready.

I volleyed ideas for requested changes. We talked about my musical hopes as an artist for this album, and we discussed my fears as a new mother going into the necessary vacuum of the studio experience while nursing an infant. Needless to say this recording was going to be different in a LOT of ways. We set a start date.

In May 2013 my husband, our new baby boy and I relocated from Nashville to California for a month. Rick's Shangri-La Studio is located in an old hippy ranch house in Malibu.

While the daily commute was beautiful, the pedigree of this place is what bewitched me.

Owned originally by Bob Dylan, and founded in the 70's, this place held the energy of four decades of music that was made by artists and musicians who had neither the luxury nor crutch of the technology that "perfects" the music so often currently floating through the airwaves. They made recordings that sounded like human emotion. Not sterile, perfection. I wanted the spirit of their fearless imperfection, with all of its raw, simple beauty, to span the decades and cross through the walls and into my songs, my voice and the hands of the fantastic musicians who would play on this album.

We set up a "nursery" in one of the studio rooms. Each day I would sing until Magnus (my son) let my husband or my mom know that he was hungry. At which point, off went the headphones and on went the baby for a feeding. We tracked each take live, so between the focus and excitement of my singing and the focus and attention of my mothering, I was nervously wrung out at the end of each day. We tracked 21 songs this way. Out of those 21, Rick and I made our

independent lists of "yes/no/maybes". Those we had in common made the album. Those we had in common also came together to tell stories of nostalgia, longing, loss. They spun tales of unintentional betrayal, of jealousy, of motherhood, of love. They were all, in one way or another, the legend of rediscovering oneself. Of course, to me, that is what all art does: it offers a new way to see your life, your past and yourself.

I will be forthright with you in sharing my hopes for this project. I hope it makes an impact. I hope it touches and moves and entertains people. I hope everyone wants to buy it. I hope multiple millions do. I hope it wins lots of awards, beau coupe hearts, and tons of new fans. I hope it takes me to exciting and new and wildly successful places. And, I hope you'll come with me.

BRANDY CLARK When your grandmother enlists you to model her “I Skied Down Mount St. Helens May 18, 1980” t-shirts—complete with “authentic” burn holes—at the local flea market, you can be sure you’re going to grow up with a unique outlook on life. For acclaimed No. 1 songwriter Brandy Clark, it’s an outlook that has served her well.

Born and raised in the small Washington mill town of Morton—yes, in the shadow of Mount St. Helens, which erupted when she was just a little girl—Brandy developed an affection for working-class people and the dangerous jobs many of them undertake to make ends meet. Her father, a logger, died in a work-related accident, her mother toiled in human resources at the mill, and Brandy herself worked amid the lumber, at a fencing mill. As such, she related to the hardship depicted in the film “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and became obsessed with the music of Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard.

But above all, Brandy adored eccentric personalities. “I love characters,” says Brandy.

“When Mount St. Helens erupted, I remember my grandmother just standing on the porch, smoking a cigarette, and watching the hot mud fall from the sky. My grandmother was my favorite character in life.”

12 Stories, Brandy’s debut album as an artist, is full of diverse characters. There’s the woman in first single “Stripes” who fantasizes about killing her cheating husband, but doesn’t want to be caught dead in an orange jumpsuit. There’s another who asks Jesus for

help, but plays the lottery just in case in “Pray to Jesus.” And there’s the bored housewife in “Get High” who escapes daily drudgery by rolling joints at the kitchen table.

“I get my inspiration from real people who are just surviving their life and getting through their day. That’s who I write songs for,” explains Brandy. “I want to write songs for somebody who is working at a bank—if that person could write a song, what they would write. That’s my goal.”

Prior to 12 Stories, Brandy achieved that goal by penning songs for other artists.

Reba McEntire and Kenny Rogers have both recorded her songs. Darius Rucker, Sheryl Crow and Kacey Musgraves have Brandy compositions on their new albums. And The Band Perry gave Brandy her first No. 1 single with “Better Dig Two,” followed shortly after by another No. 1 in “Mama’s Broken Heart,” cut by Miranda Lambert.

They are all milestones for Brandy the songwriter, but 12 Stories aims to establish Brandy as a performing artist. The album, a collection of a dozen songs ranging from rollicking back-porch jams like “Crazy Women” to vulnerable tear-at-your-heart ballads like “Hold My Hand,” seemed to have birthed itself.

Teaming up with producer Dave Brainard (Jerrod Niemann, Ray Scott), Brandy used her writing gift and distinct voice to craft a record that has touched everyone lucky enough to hear it. Marty Stuart is a vocal fan, as are Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow and Kacey Musgraves. All of them are attracted to Brandy’s unfiltered take on the human experience, its joys and especially its frailties.

“I think my music is a dark comedy, just as I think life is a dark comedy,” says Brandy. “The truth is funny sometimes. I don’t ever want to come across as corny or novelty, but you have to laugh at things. I feel like this record is about what’s really going on in life.”

Things like divorce, death, addiction and unfulfilled desire. Or even more so, inappropriately fulfilled desire. “I know more people that are cheating than not,” Brandy observes. “And so many people are addicts that would never admit it, which is what ‘Take a Little Pill’ is about. The pill problem in this country is huge.”

Not that Brandy is casting stones. “I have no judgment on anybody,” she laughs. “I’m just a dark comedian. People go, ‘Oh she gets me, because she’s flawed.’ And they’re right. I’m

drawn to flawed characters. Because we’re all flawed.”

Ironically, 12 Stories the album is not. Instead, its characters and their individual troubles combine to make a clear-eyed document of everyday life in the 21st century, as well as the freshest project to come out of Nashville in years. 12 Stories is dryly humorous, moving, sad and, most of all, real.

But it’s not only Brandy’s story—it’s yours!

LINDSAY ELL Named one of CMT’s Next Women of Country, Lindsay Ell is a triple threat: accomplished musician, unique vocalist and songwriter.

The 26-year-old Calgary native learned to play guitar while traveling with her father to country-bluegrass camps as a young girl.

Ell honed her craft as a musical stylist and songwriter after being discovered by BTO and The Guess Who’s Randy Bachman, who discovered her at the age of 13. The multiinstrumentalist was soon opening for the likes of Luke Bryan, Buddy Guy, The Band Perry and Keith Urban. The Stoney Creek Records artist has been called “a true triple threat” by Guitar World; “a star in the making”

by Taste of Country; “Your coolest new girl crush” by Teen Vogue; and “a distinct figure in the modern country recording camp” by NASH Country Weekly. Ell received critical

acclaim for her singles “Trippin’ On Us” and “Shut Me Up” including being named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know.”

Ell’s new single, the spirited and up-tempo “By the Way” was released in October.

TARA THOMPSON Initially gaining buzz performing at some of Nashville’s premiere listening rooms and writers’ rounds, Tara Thompson, a Tennessee native, has embraced her Country music heritage while coupling more contemporary sounds. Tara brings a compelling voice and quirky tongue-in-cheek spin on her life experiences, penning all of her own tunes.

The spunky songstress inked a joint venture songwriting contract with Big Machine Music and Spoon’s Tunes Publishing. America The year 2015 marks the 45th Anniversary of perennial classic-rock favorite, America.

Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name”. America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Forty plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound.

America's journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their bestknown tunes, which also include "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," and "Sister Golden Hair" were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of Gerry Beckley’s melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell’s use of folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with Dan Peek's more traditional countryrock leanings and highly personal lyrics.

America's albums--six certified gold and/ or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales--displayed a fuller range of the trio's talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.

Enjoying massive success early in their career, America earned their stripes as musical soldiers on the battlefield amidst the excess, craziness and chaos of the 70’s. The trio won the Grammy® for Best New Artist in 1972 and began working with George Martin and Geoff Emerick in 1974. This successful team went on to record seven albums and several Top Ten hits, including “Tin Man” and “Sister Golden Hair”.

By the mid-70s, inter-band conflicts combined with an exhaustive touring and recording schedule exacted its toll on the group. With Peek’s departure from the fold in 1977, Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell rose to the challenge and carried on as a duo. Shifts in sound and direction, changes in producers and managers, and a renewed dedication to the craft of songwriting helped rocket America to the upper reaches of the pop charts in 1982 with their smash single, "You Can Do Magic." During this tumultuous time in their career, Beckley and Bunnell immersed themselves in their craft, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work. Their growth as singers, songwriters and musicians has continued into the present day as illustrated by landmark releases such as 2000’s Highway 3-disc box set, 2002’s Holiday Harmony, an album comprised of seasonal classics and live showcases, 2007's Here & Now, 2009’s Live In Concert: Wildwood Springs and 2011’s Back Pages.

From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America’s audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal.

"I think that the ingredients of the America sound are the basic fundamentals that translate internationally," explains Beckley.

"The Italians are huge fans of dance music, but they also love a ballad--they're romantic at heart. It's the same in the Far East. A lot of times in these countries, we see people singing along, and they don't really know what the words mean. Music is truly the international language."

Jackie Evancho It was Jackie Evancho’s love of the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” that stirred the passion within her to begin singing and posting videos to YouTube. Not long after gaining a degree of notoriety for those videos Jackie decided to submit her rendition of “Panis Angelicus” to a special YouTube episode during the 5th season of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” variety show.

The response was overwhelming and earned her the opportunity to perform in front of the judges on live television.

Jackie’s first performance on America’s Got Talent left audiences and judges astonished that such a perfect, beautiful, soprano voice could come from a 10 year-old girl. During her next appearance, judges asked Jackie to improvise a tune which she performed flawlessly. It wasn’t just her musical gift and her age that floored the “America’s Got Talent” audience, but Jackie’s presence, poise and charm that truly made them take notice.

One of the show’s judges, Piers Morgan, explained, “You’ve got the whole package.”

The young soprano from Pittsburgh with the stunning voice won runner-up and launched her music career, signing with Columbia Records, shortly thereafter.

“She is a prodigy; they break the rules by definition,” wrote music critic Andrew Duckenbrod in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after seeing a then-11 year old perform to a sold-out crowd in her hometown in October, 2011. “[Her] voice mesmerizes. She has become one of the performers who have been defining the “crossover classic” category of singers – those who are equally comfortable with Puccini or pop.”

Since her appearance on the show that made her famous Jackie has been able to break through being typecast as “reality show singer” and has established herself as a legitimate force within the classical crossover genre. In the short time since gaining fame, Jackie’s unique, gorgeous, soprano voice has won her millions of fans and her recordings have dominated the music and DVD charts.

Since the age of 10, Jackie has garnered the support of legendary music producers like David Foster and filmmakers such as Robert Redford. Billboard Magazine named Jackie to their list of music movers-and-shakers under the age of 21 in 2011 and again in 2012

because the soprano’s “spellbinding, operatic vocals possess a power and poignancy that often moves listeners multiple times her age to tears.” Her humility and politeness even earned her accolades as one 2011’s ten best mannered people according to The National League of Junior Cotillions.

Jackie’s debut EP, O Holy Night, was released in November 2010 and became the year's #1 best-selling debut recording with sales exceeding 1 million copies and earned her a platinum certification. In June 2011, Jackie released her first studio album, Dream With Me. It debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #2 and was certified Gold after only four weeks of release. Heavenly Christmas, was released in November 2011 and became one of the top-selling holiday albums of the year.

Jackie has participated in many high profile events including the Oprah finale spectacular as well as the lighting of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., where she sang—and delighted—President and Mrs. Obama.

In early 2012, Jackie was selected to travel to Russia to perform in front of 100,000 people prior to the opening of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. Jackie, representing the United States, was honored to sing with two opera stars, Dmitri Hvorostovsky of Russia and Sumi Jo of Korea.

Her U.S. shows are also sell-outs and have been taped for broadcast on PBS for the Great Performances series. Jackie’s first PBS special was one of the top pledge producing performances in PBS’ history. When PBS aired “Dream With Me In Concert” during the latter half of 2011, it instantly became one of their most broadcast programs of the year and was used extensively during pledge drives.

She was asked to do another show for the Great Performance series in 2012: Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies which features Jackie singing classic songs from movies as diverse as “South Pacific” (Some Enchanted Evening), “Titanic” (My Heart Will Go On) and “Cinema Paridiso (Se). To follow up her Great Performance special, Jackie released her third studio album, “Songs From The Silver Screen” on October 2, 2012 where it debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical charts and at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart.

2012 became an even busier year when

Jackie tried her hand at acting and modeling.

She made her acting debut in “The Company You Keep.” Robert Redford cast Jackie to play his daughter in the thriller which came out in theaters in April 2013. Off screen, Jackie was selected by GUESS owner, Paul Marciano, to star in the Fall 2012 GUESS Kids clothing campaigns. “I have had so much fun ... and had such a great time posing in all those great clothes for GUESS, but singing is still the thing I love the most,” said Jackie.

In March 2013 Jackie performed as part of an unprecedented Cirque du Soleil extravaganza at the Bellagio’s “O” Theatre

to support “One Night for One Drop” on World Water Day. Jackie starred as the show’s special guest and participated in a breathtaking water and aerial performance.

After parting ways with Columbia Records Jackie found a home with Sony Masterworks and released her third studio album in July of 2014 and like her other albums before, “Awakening” too debuted at #1 on Billboard’s classical charts. In December of 2014 a new PBS special, “Awakening Live In Concert” was pledged in support of her album and tour.

And the journey continues……

It ought to have a personality.” – Glenn Miller Alton Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa on March 1, 1904. But it was in North Platte, Nebraska, several years later that Glenn actually got his musical start when, one day, his father brought home a mandolin. Glenn promptly traded it for an old battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got. In fact his mother worried, “It got to where Pop and I used to wonder if he’d ever amount to anything.”

In 1923, Miller entered the University of Colorado, although he spent more time traveling to auditions and playing where and whenever he could. After flunking three of his five courses one semester, Glenn dropped out to concentrate on his career as a professional musician.

He toured with several orchestras and ended up in Los Angeles where he landed a spot in Ben Pollack’s group, a band that included a guy named Benny Goodman. Here, Miller also got the chance to write some arrangements.

Miller played and recorded with the likes of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey (who on several of their records, featured an up-and-coming singer by the name of Bing Crosby), Gene Krupa, Eddie Condon and Coleman Hawkins.

In addition, during that time, Glenn cut 18 sides for Goodman, and also worked for radio studio conductors like Victor Young, Carl Fenton and Jacques Renard. In 1934, Miller became the musical director of the Dorsey Band, and later went on to organize The Ray Noble Orchestra, which included such players as Charlie Spivak, Peewee Erwin, Bud Freeman, Johnny Mince, George Van Eps and Delmar Kaplan, among others.

In April 1935, Glenn Miller recorded, for the first time, under his own name. Using six horns, a rhythm section and a string quartet, he recorded “Moonlight on the Ganges” and “A Blues Serenade” for Columbia. But selling only a few hundred records, he continued his position with the Noble Orchestra.

In 1937, Glenn Miller stepped out to form his own band. But it was not to be. Glenn gave his men their final notice on New Year’s Eve at the Valencia Ballroom in York, Pennsylvania.

Broke, depressed and having no idea what he was going to do, he returned to New York

It is said that Miller could never remember precisely the moment he decided to emphasize his new reed section sound. But it was during this disheartening interim, that he realized the unique sound — produced by the clarinet holding the melodic line while the tenor sax plays the same note, and supported harmonically by three other saxophones — just might be the individual and easily recognizable style that would set his band apart from all the rest.

Formed in March 1938, the second Glenn Miller Orchestra — which would later include the likes of Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton, Ray Eberle, Paul Tanner, Johnny Best, Hal McIntyre, and Al Klinck — soon began breaking attendance records all up and down the East Coast. At the New York State Fair in Syracuse it attracted the largest dancing crowd in the city’s history. The next night it topped Guy Lombardo’s all-time record at the Hershey Park Ballroom in Pennsylvania.

The Orchestra was invited by ASCAP to perform at Carnegie Hall with three of the greatest bands ever — Paul Whiteman, Fred Waring and Benny Goodman — and created more of a stir than any of them.

There were record-breaking recordings, as well, such as “Tuxedo Junction”, which sold 115,000 copies in the first week. “In the Mood”, and “Pennsylvania 6-5000?, all appearing on the RCA Victor Bluebird label. In early 1940, Down Beat Magazine announced that Miller had topped all other bands in its Sweet Band Poll, and capping off this seemingly sudden rise to the top, there was, of course, Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” radio series for Chesterfield cigarettes which aired three times a week over CBS. In 1941, it was off to Hollywood where the band worked on its first movie, “Sun Valley Serenade”, which introduced the song — and soon-to-be million selling record –”Chattanooga Choo Choo”, and featured the Modernaires and the Nicholas Brothers. Then came “Orchestra Wives”. But the war was starting to take its toll on many of the big bands as musicians, and the rest of country’s young men, began receiving draft notices.

On October 7, 1942, Alton Glenn Miller reported for induction into the Army and was immediately assigned to the Army Specialist Corps. His appointment as a Captain came after many months of convincing the

military higher-ups that he could modernize the army band and ultimately improve the morale of the men. His training complete, he was transferred into the Army Air Corps, where he ultimately organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. Miller’s goal of entertaining the troops took another year to be realized, but in late 1943 he and the band were shipped out to England.

There, in less than one year, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band engaged in over 800 performances. Of these, 500 were broadcasts heard by millions. There were more than 300 appearances including concerts and dances, with a gross attendance of over 600,000.

But Glenn was not to participate in the final six months of these activities.

In the Fall of 1944, the band was scheduled to be sent on a six-week tour of Europe and would be stationed in Paris during that time.

Miller decided to go ahead, in order to make the proper arrangements for the group’s arrival. And so, on December 15th, Glenn Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris, never to be seen again.

In his book “Glenn Miller & His Orchestra”, George Simon wrote this about the man.

“His favorite author was Damon Runyon. His favorite book was the Bible. Spencer Tracy and Olivia de Havilland were his favorite movie actor and actress. His big loves were trout fishing, playing baseball, listening to good music, sleep and money. His pet hates were bad swing, early-morning telephone calls (he liked to sleep from 4 a.m. to noon), and the phrase ‘goodbye now’. His favorite quotation, one he stated, was not from the Bible, nor from Runyon, but from Duke Ellington: ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing If it Ain’t Got that Swing!’

THE DIAMONDS In 1957 The Diamonds released an instant million selling hit called “Little Darlin’.” The song continues to sell worldwide and has been dubbed “the National Anthem of Rock and Roll”. To date it has sold approximately 20 million copies.

Through the years since the release of “Little Darlin’” The Diamonds have learned one important lesson—the durability of this classic rock and roll music is as much about the future as it is about the past. As a result, The Diamonds continue to expand their audience to this day, performing in a variety

of venues and settings worldwide. “We’ve been pleased to find a growing audience among all age groups. They love songs they can understand, remember and actually sing the words to—today, tomorrow, or even 20 years from now.”

A major reason for The Diamonds’ longevity as performers and entertainers lies in the diverse backgrounds of the members of the group. A very recent addition to the group is tenor Sean Sooter. Sean received his early performance training with The Young Americans - performing in eight U.S. tours and as well as Japan. Sean went on to work as a featured vocalist aboard the MS Noordam with Holland America Cruise Lines. Sean has served as musical director for numerous musical productions including Five Guys Named “Moe,” “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Xanadu.” He earned his BA in Music Education from California Baptist University and a Master of Arts degree in Education through Azusa Pacific University.

Sean worked for six years as a high school music teacher before joining The Diamonds – following his dream of singing with “one of the best vocal groups in show business today.” Sean’s wide array of talents has made his addition to The Diamonds’ lineup a real plus—for both the group and their loyal fans!

Lead singer Jerry Siggins has worked throughout the United States, Japan, and Australia as a singer and actor. He spent five summers at Jackson Hole’s Pink Garter Theater and has guest starred on The Tonight Show, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and The Love Boat. Before setting down roots as a permanent member of The Diamonds in 1991, Jerry enjoyed a successful career as an actor in television commercials and theatre. He sang in a doo-wop group called Danny and The Dappers and was a mainstay at Disneyland and Disney World as a vocalist with The Dapper Dans for years.

The newest addition to The Diamonds is bass singer Jeff Dolan. Jeff has worn many musical hats in his career -- first as a member of the sensational vocal jazz group “Beachfront Property,” then as the bass singer and vocal contractor for Ray Conniff. Jeff was a member of the “Dapper Dans of Disneyland,” worked as a Christmas caroler for 25 years and has appeared on over 25 CDs. He has numerous recording credits including a Grammy award and singing with the Phoenix Chorale. He has graced the musical theatre stage in both Phoenix and Southern California, and

served as the artistic director of the Tucson Barbershop eXperience Chorus. But for sure, Jeff's greatest accomplishments are his kids -- Danny, Bonnie, Hayley and Claire!.

Baritone singer Gary Owens has spent the longest time as a Diamond joining in 1973.

Owens learned his craft as a journeyman bass player around LA while earning his undergraduate degree in music at Cal. State University, Long Beach. In the 1980’s, he took a brief hiatus to complete his Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the University of Southern California. Besides singing, and playing saxophone and flute,

Owens does much of the vocal arranging for The Diamonds. In that capacity, he is well aware of the group’s particular effectiveness.

“Our goal has always been to keep that classic Diamonds’ sound intact. Although The Diamonds are four distinctive individuals,” he notes, “we have created one strong group personality. The four of us as a unit have a special chemistry, and it is that chemistry that gives us our unique identity.”

The standing and return engagements are the proof; The Diamonds have taken the Classic Rock and Roll genre to a whole new level. The Diamonds truly are a cut above!

Jewel: Picking Up the Pieces Tour Jewel has never had a case of writer’s block; if need be, she can write on command. “I’m lucky for that,” the singer-songwriter says with a laugh, playing down the fact that over the past few decades she’s penned hundreds of poignant songs, many of which she’s been performing in concert for over two decades but has chosen not to record. Jewel knows that at this point in her life – after selling millions of albums and establishing herself as one of the most successful musicians of her generation – she could take many routes: she could wait on releasing a new album for years at a time, strictly choosing to perform live instead; or perhaps she’d focus on her memoir, the forthcoming Never Broken; or be satisfied she wrote two children’s books and a pair of successful children’s albums.

That’s not Jewel though. Jewel remains a storyteller. The itches are ever-present to document her thoughts and perceptions in musical form.

“It was the time in my life to do this,” the Alaskan-born music icon says bluntly, reflecting on her decision to record, produce and now release Picking Up the Pieces, her first “proper” album of new studio material in five years and a self-described return to the territory explored on her landmark 1995 debut, Pieces of You. “It’s something I needed for myself.”

Perhaps due to Jewel's desire to confront the darker side of life head on, her inimitable vocals sound as emotionally potent here as on her earliest work, conveying an unrelenting desire to share herself once more, a poet and troubadour on a lifelong journey of reflection. “My mission was to try and make a record where I didn’t feel diluted,” she explains of a 14-track collection of songs that finds the singer baring her soul and exploring a wide range of sonic textures, from sparse to exotic, in a manner few have ever treaded so successfully.

Picking Up the Pieces, which Jewel describes as a “singer-songwriter’s record,” and one she hopes her influences, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones and mentors, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and Neil Young, would be proud of, is the project many have been waiting patiently to hear for years.

With her vast and wide-ranging catalogue, which is rapidly approaching 1000 songs - all written over the last quarter century, Jewel

has indeed become one of the premiere singer-songwriters of our time.

Over the course of the album, Jewel conveys the emotional turmoil of life during it’s most difficult and challenging moments, with genuine emotional pain fueling her vocals and reaching a new intensity level with her music in the process. A singer cannot transmit feelings into listeners without tapping into those feelings and this collection of songs provided the opportunity to dig deep into her own experiences.

Meditations on lost love and broken relationships are prevalent on Picking Up the Pieces, with the potent and poetic “Love Used To Be" and the hopeless despair of "It Doesn't Hurt Right Now," a penetrating collaboration with Rodney Crowell that explores the aftermath of an affair. Previously unrecorded live staples from the original Pieces Of You era like "Everything Breaks," "Here When Gone," "His Pleasure Is My Pain" and "Carnivore," which manages to convey heartbreak, hostility and defiance simultaneously, are also among them. Family relationships are also eloquently explored, with the self-examining "Family Tree" and “My Father’s Daughter” – a stunning autobiographical collaboration with country legend Dolly Parton.

“I was trying to keep my mind quiet and honestly get back to something I feel like I’d lost touch with in my life,” she adds of the reflective LP. “It was really an exercise in shutting out fear. I was giving myself permission to be exactly who and what I was.”

To be sure, this is an album about selfawareness: namely, the way it affects our evolution, maturation and acceptance. “It really felt like returning to a part of me that I didn’t mean to lose, but with time and relationships and life and surviving and dealing you take on new things and not all of them are great,” she admits. The recording process for the album, which Jewel describes as a “very holistic process,” centered on “carving away things about myself and returning to a sense of myself that I really needed.”

The 41-year-old singer didn’t come to this place easily however – a rough childhood, a recent divorce and countless moments of introspection led her here. Still, as when she

was a homeless teenager, hitchhiking the country and finding herself along the way, she persevered. Specifically, Jewel spent the past few years hashing out her new album in Nashville, hunkering down at a workmanlike clip with an accomplished band comprised of several of her mentor Neil Young’s longtime musical comrades. Typically, she’d log studio time for several hours a day, multiple days a week while her four-year-old-son, Kase, was at school.

Self-producing the album, she says, was something that came as a matter of unfortunate circumstances. “My original goal was to have Ben Keith do it,” she says of the late Pieces Of You producer. In his absence, she took it upon herself to man the boards, a challenge, she says, only in teaching herself to forget all the music-industry shortcuts she’d picked up throughout her career: “When I made my first record I knew nothing so I was able to make a very pure record. To try and do that 20 years later and forget all the quoteunquote clever stuff about the business is challenging.” The absence of polished production and studio trickery reveals a clear focus on vocals and the instrumental empathy between Jewel and her musicians.

This was a risky approach that could have led to disaster but instead has helped her reach a new level of lyrical and musical unity. One of the finest examples of this is "Here When Gone," which is virtually unrecognizable from its solo acoustic incarnation, now vacillating between a haunting groove and a shuffling swing. About this track, she says, "Thanks to the chemistry between these musicians and I, this song has finally found its place."

If returning to several songs she’d written at a much younger age – not to mention participating in countless moments of introspection – for Picking Up the Pieces, has taught Jewel anything, it’s that no matter her place in life, at her core she’s a singersongwriter. “It isn’t just thinking about you,” she explains of her natural-born craft. “It’s thinking about the world and wanting to rise with people. You have a social obligation.

You’re aware that there’s more than just you.

Picking Up the Pieces, she concludes, is born out of a simple purpose: it’s about “getting very comfortable with saying “This is just me. These are my thoughts. These are my feelings. This is my poetry.”

Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science “Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science” (www. altonbrownlive.com), the follow-up to the smash “Edible Inevitable” tour, will hit the road in 2016. Fans can expect all new everything including songs, multimedia presentations, talk-show antics, and bigger and better potentially dangerous food demonstrations. Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. Critics and fans alike have raved about the interactive components of Brown’s shows. He promises “plenty of new therapy inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want to give too much away, but this time we’re going to play a little game while we’re at it. Plus, you’ll see things I’ve never been allowed to do on TV.” He’s also contemplating more sophisticated protective gear for folks in the first few rows…just in case things get messy…again.

Brown, author of the James Beard award winning, “I’m Just Here for the Food,” and the New York Times bestselling sequence, “Good Eats,” is releasing the first of two new cookbooks through Ballantine Books (an imprint of Random House) in the Fall of 2016.

ALTON BROWN: EVERY DAY COOK, or EDC as Brown calls it, is a collection of more than 100 personal recipes as well as a pinch of science and history. He has hosted numerous series including, “Cutthroat Kitchen,” “Camp Cutthroat” and “Iron Chef America” and created, produced and hosted the Peabody award winning series, “Good Eats” for 13 years on Food Network. Good Eats can still be seen on the Cooking Channel and Netflix.
