Company History

This year, New Jersey Ballet celebrates the 47th anniversary of its Nutcracker, making it the longest running original professional production in the state. The production debuted in 1971 with Edward Villella, then an international star with New York City Ballet, as the Cavalier. Today, after close to 900 performances and over a million viewers, it has become a cherished holiday tradition with generations of theatergoers throughout New Jersey and beyond. In 2008, the production made history as the first full length classical ballet ever performed in India, where it sold out three performances at that country’s Performing Arts Center in Mumbai.

For nearly sixty years, NJB has thrilled audiences from Bergen to Cape May with top quality professional ballet. It has given hundreds of thousands of adults and children their first introduction to ballet and inspired in many a lifelong love of the arts.

New Jersey Ballet has also taken the best of New Jersey arts to audiences in other parts of the country and set records on international tours to Bermuda, India, Italy, Russia and Taiwan.

The founding of New Jersey Ballet created a profound change in the cultural landscape of New Jersey.

Thanks to NJB, countless children, teens, adults and senior citizens in every corner of the state have enjoyed the magic of dance theatre. During its 24 week season, New Jersey Ballet performs a variety of works from classical, contemporary and jazz ballet. And the company also has one of the largest collections of ballets for children in the country.

New Jersey Ballet’s extensive repertory includes works choreographed by some of the greatest names in the world of dance: Balanchine, deMille, Tudor, Nebrada, North, Pourfarrokh, Taras, Sappington, Renvall, Tomal, Vernon, Vesak, Petipa, Chabukiany, Saint Leon and Bournonville. The company’s artistic advisors have included three of the greatest international dancers of the 20th century; Edward Villella, Eleanor D’Antuono and Leonid Kozlov who danced at New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi.

COMPANY DANCERS LEONID FLEGMATOV graduated from Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2001 and joined the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts GITIS as a soloist. His repertoire includes principal roles in such ballets as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Futile Precaution. Leonid was awarded a prize in the First International Chabukiani-Balanchine Ballet Competition in 2001. He has toured in Europe, Asia and the United States and has danced with Miami City Ballet, Columbia Classical Ballet, International Ballet Theatre and Grand Rapids Ballet Company. A member of NJ Ballet in 20072008, he rejoined the company in 2011.

ALBINA GHAZARYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School and joined the Armenian National Ballet as a soloist in 2004.

In 2011, she joined the Israel Ballet company as a principal dancer. Albina is a laureate of the Grigorovich International Ballet competition in 2010. She has extensive classical ballet repertoire including Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Nutcracker, Carmen, and Spartacus, to name a few. She joined NJB in 2015.

ILSE KAPTEYN began her training at the East Street Ballet, Massachusetts. She continued training with Irina Vakhromeeva while a student at Deerfield Academy. Ilse attended summer programs at the School of American Ballet, the Chautauqua Institution, and American Ballet Theatre NY. Ilse traveled to Moscow in the summer of 2011 and was accepted at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Ilse joined NJB in 2012.

KOTOE KOJIMA-NOA was born in Japan and studied with New York City Ballet principals Valentina Kozlova and Leonid Kozlov. Ms. Kojima-Noa joined NJB during the 2001-2002 season and has appeared in Nutcracker, Paquita, Sleeping Beauty, Graduation Ball, Esmeralda, Giselle, Flames of Paris pas de deux and in featured roles in Johan Renvall's Tango and Robert North’s Let’s Go South.

NAREK MARTIROSYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School. Upon graduation, he joined the Armenian National Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer. Mr. Martirosyan was awarded the Moves Khorenatsi Medal by the President of Armenia for his significant contributions to the development of culture and his outstanding staging of the ballet Spartacus. In 2011 he became a principal with the Israel Ballet.

Repertoire includes Don Quixote, Carmen, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker as a principal dancer. He joined NJB in 2015.

RISA MOCHIZUKI was born in Tokyo and trained at the Royal Ballet of Flanders,

and Kishibi and Kawasaki Ballet Schools in Japan. Winning medals in several international competitions, she danced solo and principal roles with the Teatrul Balet Sibiu, Romania, the Constanta National Opera Ballet and the Timisoara National Opera Ballet. Principal roles include Don Quixote, Paquita, Nutcracker, Chopiniana and La Vivandiere. She joined NJB in 2014.

ANDREW NOTARILE began studying at the age of eight at New Jersey School of Ballet.

He also continued his studies at School of American Ballet and is a graduate of Professional Performing Arts School. He has perfomed with ARB and BalletMet in Columbus, OH. His virtuosity has been distinguished in such varied roles as the Cavalier, Snow King and Prince in Nutcracker, the title role in Petruchka; and featured roles in Midsummer Night’s Dream; Othello; Who Cares?; and Jerome Robbins’ Interplay. He joined NJB in 2012.

GABRIELLA NOA began her training locally and entered New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 8. At 11, she performed the coveted role of Clara in New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker at Paper Mill—one of the youngest ever to dance the role. Ms. Noa was a scholarship student at the Pennsylvania Ballet, and returned to New Jersey and NJB in 1999. Her repertory includes Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, and roles in Allegro Brilliante, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Tango, For Ella, Saturday Night and the Cowgirl in deMille’s Rodeo.

RUBEN RASCON began his training in Santa Fe at the National Dance Institute and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet School. He also studied at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and at East Street Ballet, Massachusetts. He was a scholarship student at summer programs at Boston Ballet, ABT, School of American Ballet, and the Rock School. In 2011 Ruben graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, where he passed his exams with top marks in every category. Ruben joined NJB in 2012.

MARI SUGAWA was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Japan where she received her training. She joined the Matsuyama Ballet Company in 1994 and performed as a soloist in such classics as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Coppelia, Cinderella, and Giselle. She also performed Ballet Ballet Ballet, a contemporary work by Matsuyama Company choreographer Tetsutaro Shimizu. Ms. Sugawa has performed with Ballet Austin, New York Theatre Ballet and Eglevsky Ballet. Her Juliet, Princess Aurora and Black Swan have met with high critical praise.

ANDRÉ LUIS TEIXEIRA began studying ballet in his native Brazil at the age of 8. Six years later, he joined Sesiminas Companhia, where he rose through the ranks from corp de ballet to

principal dancer. His repertoire includes leading roles in such classical ballets as Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Sleeping Beauty, Paquita, Swan Lake and Nutcracker. André has won numerous gold and silver medals in international competitions. He joined NJB in 2013.

CHRISTINA THERYOUNG started her training at New Jersey School of Ballet and later studied at the School of American Ballet and the Royal Ballet, London. Upon returning to the U.S., she joined the Los Angeles Ballet, directed

by John Clifford, and also performed with the Fort Worth Ballet. Christina appeared in New Jersey Ballet’s 25th Anniversary Nutcracker in 1995 and joined the company for the 1996 season. In 1997, she entered the New York International Competition and was chosen to perform the Stars and Stripes solo at the Gala performance.

CATHERINE WHITING trained at the NJ School of Ballet and also attended programs at School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She was part of the NJ School of Ballet ensemble that took first place twice in the Youth Dance Festival of New Jersey. She also won first place in pas de deux in that competition. Her repertory includes Fairy Doll, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote. She joined NJB in 2011.

YUUKI YAMAMOTO trained at the Hakucho Ballet Academy in his native Japan. He was a finalist in the Japan Grand Prix and won a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He has appeared in Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Flames of Paris, Sleeping Beauty, Gopak, Nutcracker and many others. Yuuki joined NJB in 2010.

KAITLYN DAL BON trained at New Jersey School of Ballet in the Intensive Program. A member of the Junior Company for 3 years, she performed the demanding role of Clara in NJ Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ms. Dal Bon earned a Silver Medal at the Youth American Grand Prix and First Place at the National Society of Arts & Letters state competition and went on to become a national finalist. During the summer she studied on scholarship at the Bolshoi Academy, Russia and American Ballet Theatre, New York. A Morris Knolls High Scholl honor student, she plans to attend college.

RACHEL CARINA Rachel is a New Jersey native, born and raised in Morris County. She began her ballet studies under Michael Shannon and Sara Knight. She studied at New Jersey School of Ballet for three years, two of them as a member of the Junior Company. She won a full scholarship to The Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton and upon graduation was accepted into Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Graduate Program. Rachel has performed professionally with the Gainesville Ballet and in New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker.

EMMANUEL MARTIROSYAN graduated from the Armenian National School of Ballet and attended the Joffrey School of Ballet in NYC on full scholarship. In 2014 he placed second in the Ballet Competition in Russia. An apprentice at the National Ballet Theater in Armenia, he appeared as a soloist in several productions in Yerevan, Armenia and as an actor in numerous television series on Armenian Television.

NAHOKO NAKAMOTO was born in Japan where she trained at the Yuasa Ballet Academy.

She has also trained in Vancouver, Canada and at Alvin Ailey School. Her repertory includes roles in Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote.

EUNICE SUBA enrolled at New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 11 and at 13 joined the intensive program. A Junior Company member for 3 years, she was chosen to dance the coveted role of Clara in NJ Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ms. Suba received scholarships in summer intensive programs at Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York and French Academie. She also appeared on Lifetime’s reality show, Dance Moms, winning over teen icon Maddie Ziegler.

Eunice graduated with honors from Nutley High School and is now attending Montclair State University majoring in Accounting.

— VIOLETA ANGELOVA was born in Bulgaria and graduated with honors from the National Choreographic School in Sofia.

She also studied at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School. Ms. Angelova joined Ballet International in Indianapolis in 2003 and came to New Jersey Ballet in 2004. She has appeared with Ballet Internationale, Eglevsky Ballet and many more, and is currently appearing with Suzanne Farrell Ballet.

HUMBERTO TEIXEIRA was born in Brazil where he began studying martial arts at the age of 7. He rapidly excelled at karate, kung fu, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and capoeira. As a teenager, to improve his martial arts technique, he began a serious study of ballet. Humberto has performed solo and principal roles with Dance Company Sesi Minas, Brazilian Dance Company, El Paso Dance Company, Columbia Classical Ballet in South Carolina, and Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Germany. In addition, he is an awardwinning choreographer whose ballet, Tamoia, was premiered by NJB in May 2011.

ARTISTIC STAFF DIRECTOR CAROLYN CLARK A native of New Jersey, Ms. Clark is Founder/Director of New Jersey Ballet Company and Director of New Jersey School of Ballet. Ms. Clark performed classical and contemporary ballet with American Ballet Theatre and toured with that company throughout North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Africa, in addition to tours in the US and Canada. Additional ballet company credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Radio City Ballet, and as principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Clark’s professional credits also include Broadway musicals, and television shows, most notably The Bell Telephone Hour where she was assistant to the choreographer. She is a founding member of ArtPride New Jersey, served two years on the President’s Council on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center, and five years on the Advisory Board of Channel 13. Ms. Clark was honored in 1976 by Governor Brendan Byrne for her “unique contribution to the arts of the State of New Jersey.” She has also been honored with a New Jersey Pride Award, and by the National Society of Arts and Letters and DanceNJ. Ms. Clark attended Rutgers University.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR PAUL H. MCRAE trained at the San Francisco School of Ballet, New Jersey School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet. He became an apprentice with New Jersey Ballet at age 16. In 1974 joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, while there he attended Point Park College. In Pittsburgh he studied and worked with Nicholas Petrov, Frederic Franklin, Leonid Massine and John Gilpin. He rejoined New Jersey Ballet in 1978 performing a wide range of solo and principal roles in the Company’s extensive repertory. Named Assistant to the Director of New Jersey Ballet in 1990 and he became Assistant Director in September 2001. Mr. McRae is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet and for the past twenty years has been on the residence ballet faculty at Kean University. He is a co-founder and former President of Dance/ New Jersey, a board member of Art Pride New Jersey and New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and he also serves as Co-Chair of the Arts Advisory Committee at Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey.

ARTISTIC ADVISOR EDWARD VILLELLA A Kennedy Center honoree, Mr. Villella is certainly America’s

most celebrated male dancer. He did much to popularize the role of the male in dance through his supreme artistry and athleticism. Among his accomplishments are Emmy Award winner, star of New York City Ballet, guest artist with the Bolshoi, performer at President Kennedy’s Inaugural, and first American to guest with the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1968, the Bell Telephone Hour’s salute to Villella became an Emmy Award-winning special.

His Harlequin – A Patchwork of Love, the first ballet ever commissioned by an American TV network, resulted in Emmy Awards for the show and for Villella as choreographer, producer and star! He is a former member of the President’s Council on the Arts and a past recipient of the prestigious Capezio Award. He was recently selected one of “America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures” by The Dance Heritage Coalition. Mr. Villella founded Miami City Ballet, built it into a leading regional company and led it on triumphant engagements in New York and Paris. He has been Artistic Advisor to New Jersey Ballet since 1972.

LUBA GULYAEVA (Ballet Mistress) A graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, Ms. Gulyaeva joined the Kirov Ballet in 1972, dancing featured roles in Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadere and Don Quixote. In the 1980s, she was invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join the staff of American Ballet Theatre where she taught company class and coached the dancers. She also taught all levels at the ABT School. Additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, the School of American Ballet in New York, and seminars at numerous universities in the U.S. MARINA BOGDANOVA (Coach) received her training at Russia’s prestigious Perm Ballet Academy and began her professional career with The Sverdlovsk State Academy Theatre of Opera and Ballet. She went on to become a principal dancer with the celebrated Russian National Ballet Company and the Ballet Theatre of Moscow, where she performed leading roles in the full classical repertory. Ms. Bogdanova earned the coveted title of Honored Artist of Russia, and has won acclaim in many countries ncluding the U.S., when The New York Times ballet critic Anna Kisselgoff praised her work. Ms. Bogdanova is on the ballet faculty of New Jersey School of Ballet.

CAROLYN TENER BROWN (Coach) began her ballet training at age 7 at New Jersey School of Ballet and was NJB’s original Clara in the company’s first production of Nutcracker.

Ms. Brown was a soloist with American Ballet Theatre for 7 years and later danced in a variety of Broadway shows including Hair, Carousel, Brigadoon, Fame-The Musical, La Cage Aux Folles and Phantom

of the Opera, where she danced the role of Meg (the best friend) for 8 years. She has worked with some of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century including Agnes deMille, Twyla Tharp and Anthony Tudor. She has also appeared on television in All My Children, The Sopranos and several PBS programs. She teaches at New Jersey School of Ballet and coaches the Company and the Junior Company.

ROSEMARY SABOVICK-BLEICH (Coach) danced with New Jersey Ballet for 20 years. A strong classical dancer, she excelled in many diverse roles that demanded the elegance of the Sylvia Pas de Deux, the bravura virtuosity of the Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux, and the feistiness of the Cowgirl in Agnes deMille’s Rodeo. Miss Sabovick-Bleich toured with the Pavlova Celebration Ballet, Kozlov and Friends, and International Stars of Ballet. Her teaching experience includes ballet and pointe classes for all levels.

holds two degrees from Rhode Island School of Design. She spent more than 10 years in the luxury retail business working for such companies as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Saks Fifth Avenue and Mikimoto, from whom she received an award for Global Strategies and Planning as part of Mikimoto’s 110th Anniversary. A lifelong dance student, Ms. Tang made her New York City Ballet debut at age 10 as one of Oberon’s (Edward Villella’s) fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She has danced in regional companies and is currently involved in Baroque Music and dance.
