Company History

This year, New Jersey Ballet celebrates the 45th anniversary of its Nutcracker, making it the longest running original professional production in the state. The production debuted in 1971 with Edward Villella, then an international star with New York City Ballet, as the Cavalier. Today, after close to 900 performances and over a million viewers, it has become a cherished holiday tradition with generations of theatergoers throughout New Jersey and beyond. In 2008, the production made history as the first full length classical ballet ever performed in India, where it sold out three performances at that country’s Performing Arts Center in Mumbai.

For more than fifty years, NJB has thrilled audiences from Bergen to Cape May with top quality professional ballet. It has given hundreds of thousands of adults and children their first introduction to ballet and inspired in many a lifelong love of the arts.

New Jersey Ballet has also taken the best of New Jersey arts to audiences in other parts of the country and set records on international tours to Bermuda, India, Italy, Russia and Taiwan.

The founding of New Jersey Ballet created a profound change in the cultural landscape of New Jersey.

Thanks to NJB, countless children, teens, adults and senior citizens in every corner of the state have enjoyed the magic of dance theatre. During its 26 week season, New Jersey Ballet performs a variety of works from classical, contemporary and jazz ballet. And the company also has one of the largest collections of ballets for children in the country.

New Jersey Ballet’s extensive repertory includes works choreographed by some of the greatest names in the world of dance: Balanchine, deMille, Tudor, Nebrada, North, Pourfarrokh, Taras, Sappington, Renvall, Tomal, Vernon, Vesak, Petipa, Chabukiany, Saint Leon and Bournonville. The company’s artistic advisors have included three of the greatest international dancers of the 20th century; Edward Villella, Eleanor D’Antuono and Leonid Kozlov who danced at New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi.

THE STORY OF NUTCRACKER ACT ONE The curtain rises on a Christmas Eve party at the home of the Mayor, his wife, and their children, Clara and Fritz. Everyone is engaged in games and dancing when old Herr Drosselmeyer arrives with his handsome nephew. At first the children are afraid of the old man, but their fear disappears when they discover what the old man has brought: a life-size porcelain doll and a soldier doll! Drosselmeyer distributes toy swords and trumpets to the boys and dolls to all the girls….all except Clara. The old gentleman presents her with a colorful Nutcracker. Jealous Fritz grabs for the Nutcracker and breaks it.

Drosselmeyer’s nephew helps Clara tuck the broken Nutcracker into her doll’s bed. The guests leave and the family retires for the night.

As the empty living room grows dark, Clara returns for one last look at her Nutcracker. She falls asleep on the sofa and a magic spell creeps over the room. Giant mice appear from behind the walls. Child-sized toy soldiers pursue the mice. The Christmas tree grows very tall. The room changes and everything disappears except the now-giant Nutcracker who leads the toy soldiers in a battle against the mice.

Suddenly, Clara gets up and helps the Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King. The Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince, and he and Clara glide away in a strange flying Swan Boat. As they pass through a strange, enchanted forest, the King and Queen of Snowflakes and their swirling subjects dance a splendid waltz.

ACT TWO Clara and her Prince journey to the Kingdom of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her court await.

The Sugar Plum shows the young couple to a pair of thrones and the whole kingdom comes to entertain them. There are dancers from faraway lands, Mother Ginger and her Clown Children, and a garden of Waltzing Flowers. Finally, the Sugar Plum dances a pas de deux with her Cavalier. The entire court joins in a final waltz, and the curtain falls as Clara climbs into the Swan Boat and sails home.

THE COMPANY IORI ARAYA trained at the Hisomi Rakaashi Ballet School in Japan and the Australian Ballet School in Southland, Victoria. She toured Australia with the Australian Ballet Dancers’ Company and later joined and toured internationally with the Singapore Dance Theatre. Her repertoire includes Giselle, Theme and Variations, Nutcracker, Divertissements and Sleeping Beauty. As a teenager, Iori entered the Youth American Grand Prix where she won a scholarship to the English National Ballet School.

KERRY MARA COX studied at New Jersey School of Ballet and graduated as a scholarship student from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. She became an apprentice with that company, under the direction of Patricia Wilde, and later performed for 10 years with St. Louis Ballet, where she rose to the rank of principal. Her repertoire includes Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Sugar Plum and Snow Queen in Nutcracker, Myrtha in Giselle, and featured roles in Dennis Nahat’s Brahms Quintet. She joined New Jersey Ballet in 2008.

ALBERT DAVYDOV was born in Russia and began his ballet training at the age of eleven at the Kazan Choreographic School of Ballet. Upon graduation, he joined the Tatar State Theater of Opera and Ballet where he danced solo and principal roles and toured with the company in Europe and the United States. He has won numerous prizes in international competition. His repertoire includes Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet. He joined New Jersey Ballet in 2004.

LEONID FLEGMATOV graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2001 and joined the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts GITIS as a soloist. His repertoire includes principal roles in such ballets as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Futile Precaution. Leonid was awarded a prize in the First International Chabukiani-Balanchine Ballet Competition in 2001. He has toured in Europe, Asia and the United States. He has danced with Miami City Ballet, Columbia Classical Ballet, International Ballet Theater, and Grand Rapids Ballet Company. A member of NJ Ballet in 2007-2008, he rejoined the company in the 2011-2012 season.

ALBINA GHAZARYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School and joined the Armenian National Ballet as a soloist in 2004. In 2011, she joined the Israel Ballet company as a principal dancer. Albina is a laureate of the Grigorovich International Ballet Competition in 2010. She has extensive classical ballet repertoire including Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Nutcracker, Carmen and Spartacus, to name a few.

ILSE KAPTEYN began her training at the East Street Ballet, Massachusetts. She continued training with Irina Vakhromeeva while a student at Deerfield Academy. Ilsa attended summer programs at the School of American Ballet, the Chautauqua Institution, and American Ballet Theatre NY. Ilsa traveled to Moscow in the summer of 2011 and was accepted at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Ilse joined New Jersey Ballet in the fall of 2012.

RAEMAN KILFOIL came to NJB from Festival Ballet of Providence, Rhode Island, where he was a principal dancer. Prior to that, he performed with North Carolina Dance Theatre and with St. Louis Ballet.

A native of New York, he received his training from the School of American Ballet and attended Indiana University where he studied under Violette Verdy. He has performed Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Bluebird in Sleeping Beauty, the Cavalier in Nutcracker, and Swan Lake, among many others.

KOTOE KOJIMA-NOA was born in Japan and studied with Bolshoi and New York City Ballet principals Valentina Kozlova and Leonid Kozlov, as well as at the School of American Ballet and Boston Ballet. Ms. Kojima-Noa placed in the top 10 at the Youth American Grand Prix. She joined New Jersey Ballet during the 2001-2002 season and has appeared in numerous solo and principal roles in the company’s repertory. She has guested with Valentina Kozlova in Concert and with Ballet Theatre of Ohio for its production of Summer Night.

ANA LUIZA LUIZI was born in Belo Horizonete, Brazil where she began her training at age 8. She joined the Sesiminas Dance Company and toured throughout Brazil and Latin America performing in Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, Don Q and Raymonda. Ana toured China with the Europe Ballet Conservatory of St. Polten, Austria before coming to the U.S. and joining NJB in 2008.

NAREK MARTIROSYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School. Upon graduation, he joined the Armenian National Ballet as a principal dancer, and in 2011 he became a principal with the Israel Ballet. Repertoire includes Don Quixote, Carmen, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker as a principal dancer.

RISA MOCHIZUKI was born in Tokyo and trained at the Royal Ballet of Flanders, and Kishibi and Kawasaki Ballet Schools in Japan. Winning medals in several international competitions. she danced solo and principal roles with the Teatrul balet Sibiu, Romania, the Constanta National Opera Ballet and the Timisoara National Opera Ballet. Principal roles include Don Quixote, Paquita, Nutcracker, Chopiniana and La Vivandiere.

GABRIELLA NOA began her training locally and entered New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 8.

At 11, she performed the coveted role of Clara in New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker at Paper Mill—one of the youngest ever to dance the role. Ms. Noa was a scholarship student at the Pennsylvania Ballet, and returned to New Jersey and NJB in 1999.

Her repertory includes roles in Allegro Brilliante, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Tango, For Ella, Saturday Night and the Cowgirl in deMille’s Rodeo.

ANDREW NOTARILE began studying ballet, tap and jazz at the age of eight at New Jersey School of Ballet.

He also studied at School of American Ballet and is a graduate of Professional Performing Arts School. He made his debut as Fritz in NJ Ballet’s Nutcracker and later appeared as the Jester in New York City Ballet’s

production of Swan Lake. Andrew has also appeared with BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio. His virtuosity has distinguished his dancing in such varied roles as the Cavalier and Nutcracker Prince in Nutcracker, the title role in Petruchka, and featured roles in Danzantes, Octet and I (Heart) Kenji.

RUBEN RASCON began his training in Santa Fe at the National Dance Institute and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet School. He also studied at the University of North Carolina School of the arts and at East Street Ballet, Massachusetts. He was a scholarship student at summer program at Boston Ballet, ABT, School of American Ballet, and the Rock School. In 2011, Ruben graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, where he passed his exams with top marks in every category.

Ruben joined New Jersey Ballet in 2012.

CHRISTINA THERYOUNG started her training at New Jersey School of Ballet and later studied at the School of American Ballet and the Royal Ballet, London. Upon returning to the U.S., she joined the Los Angeles Ballet, directed by John Clifford, and also performed with the Fort Worth Ballet. Christina appeared in New Jersey Ballet’s 25th Anniversary Nutcracker in 1995 and joined the company for the 1996 season. In 1997, she entered the New York International Competition and was chosen to perform the Stars and Stripes solo at the Gala performance.

MARI SUGAWA was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Japan where she received her training. She joined the Matsuyama Ballet Company in 1994 and performed as a soloist in such classics as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Coppelia, Cinderella, and Giselle. She also performed Ballet Ballet Ballet, a contemporary work

by Matsuyama Company choreographer Tetsutaro Shimizu. Ms. Sugawa has performed with Ballet Austin, New York Theatre Ballet and Eglevsky Ballet.

Her Juliet, Princess Aurora and Giselle with New Jersey Ballet have met with high critical praise.

ANDRÉ LUIS TEIXEIRA began studying ballet in his native Brazil at the age of 8. Six years later, he joined Sesiminas Companhia, where he rose through

YUUKI YAMAMOTO trained at the Hakucho Ballet Academy in his native Japan. He was a finalist in the Japan Grand Prix and won a scholarship to the Ailey School in New York. He has appeared in Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Flames of Paris, Sleeping Beauty, Gopak, Nutcracker and many others. Yuuki joined NJB as an apprentice in 2010 and was taken into the company in the 2011-2012 season.

CATHERINE WHITING trained at the NJ School of Ballet and also attended programs at School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She was part of the NJ School of Ballet ensemble that took first place twice in the Youth Dance Festival of New

Jersey. She also won first place in pas de deux in that competition. Her repertoire includes Fairy Doll, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote.

RACHEL CARINA was born and raised in Morris County, New Jersey. She began her ballet studies with Michael Shannon and Sara Knight. Rachel studied at New Jersey School of Ballet for three years, two of them as a member of the Junior Company. She won a full scholarship to The Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton and upon graduation, was accepted into Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Graduate Program. Rachel has performed professionally with the Gainesville Ballet and in New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker. She joined New Jersey Ballet in 2014.

NAHOKO NAKAMOTO was born in Japan where she trained at the Yuasa Ballet Academy. She has also trained in Vancouver, Canada, and at Alvin Ailey School. Her repertoire includes roles in Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote.

ARTISTIC STAFF CAROLYN CLARK (Director) A native of New Jersey, Ms. Clark is Founder/Director of New Jersey Ballet Company and Director of New Jersey School of Ballet.

Ms. Clark performed classical and contemporary ballet with American Ballet Theatre and toured with that company throughout North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Africa, in addition to tours in the US and Canada. Additional ballet company credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Radio City Ballet, and as principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Clark’s professional credits also include Broadway musicals, and television shows, most notably The Bell Telephone Hour where she was assistant to the choreographer.

She is a founding member of ArtPride New Jersey, served two years on the President’s Council on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center, and five years on the Advisory Board of Channel 13. Ms. Clark was honored in 1976 by Governor Brendan Byrne for her “unique contribution to the arts of the State of New Jersey.” She has also been honored with a New Jersey Pride Award, and by the National Society of Arts and Letters and DanceNJ. Ms. Clark attended Rutgers University.

PAUL HILLIARD McRAE (Assistant Director) began his training at San Francisco School of Ballet at the age of 9. He spent 8 years at New Jersey School of Ballet, and became an apprentice to New Jersey Ballet Company at age 16. After high school, he joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, where he danced solo roles while attending nearby Point Park College. Upon returning to New Jersey, Mr. McRae joined New Jersey Ballet and performed numerous solo and principal roles in the Company’s extensive repertory. In recent seasons, he earned critical praise for his work as the evil fairy Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty. Mr. McRae is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet and Kean University, and serves as Artistic Advisor for Dance Residencies at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. He is a co-founder and former president of Dance/New Jersey and a board member of ArtPride New Jersey and New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and a member of the Artistic

Advisory Board of the New York International Ballet Competition. He was recently elected Co-Chair of the performing Arts Advisory Committee at Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey.

EDWARD VILLELLA (Artistic Advisor) A Kennedy Center honoree, Mr. Villella is perhaps the greatest American premier danseur ever. Among his accomplishments are Emmy Award winner, star of New York City Ballet, guest artist with the Bolshoi, performer at President Kennedy’s Inaugural, and first American to guest with the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1968, the Bell Telephone Hour’s salute to Villella became an Emmy Award-winning special.

His Harlequin – A Patchwork of Love, the first ballet ever commissioned by an American TV network, resulted in Emmy Awards for the show and for Villella as choreographer, producer and star! He is a former member of the President’s Council on the Arts and a past recipient of the prestigious Capezio Award. Mr. Villella founded Miami City Ballet and directed it for 25 years. He has been Artistic Advisor to New Jersey Ballet since 1972. He was New Jersey Ballet’s first Cavalier in Nutcracker.

LUBA GULYAEVA (Ballet Mistress) A graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, Ms. Gulyaeva joined the Kirov Ballet in 1972, dancing featured roles in Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadere and Don Quixote. In the 1980s, she was invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join the staff of American Ballet Theatre where she taught company class and coached the dancers. She also taught all levels at the ABT School. Additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, the School of American Ballet in New York, and seminars at numerous universities in the U.S. ALEXANDER BOITSOV (Coach) received his ballet training at the Kiev School of Choreography.

Upon graduation in 1970, he joined Donetsk Ballet and quickly rose to the rank of principal. He toured Europe, Japan, Israel, the Middle East and the United States with an extensive repertoire that included Albrecht in Giselle, Siegfried in Swan Lake, Solar in La Bayadere and Spartacus in Spartacus. In addition, he became an expert in Russian and Ukranian character dance styles. Since retiring from the stage, Mr. Boitsov has taught ballet at all levels. He is founder and Artistic Director of International Ballet Theatre, a company which specializes in Russian Repertoire.

CAROLYN TENER BROWN (Coach) began her ballet training at age 7 at New Jersey School of Ballet and was NJB’s original Clara in the company’s first production of Nutcracker. Ms. Brown was a soloist with American Ballet Theatre for 7 years and later danced in a variety of Broadway shows including Hair, Carousel, Brigadoon, Fame-The Musical, La Cage Aux Folles and Phantom of the Opera, where she danced the role of Meg (the best friend) for 8 years. She has worked with some of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century including Agnes deMille, Twyla Tharp and Anthony Tudor. She has also appeared on television in All My Children, The Sopranos and several PBS programs. She teaches at New Jersey School of Ballet and coaches the Company and the Junior Company.

ROSEMARY SABOVICK-BLEICH (Coach) danced with New Jersey Ballet for 20 years. A strong classical dancer, she excelled in many diverse roles that demanded the elegance of the Sylvia Pas de Deux, the bravura virtuosity of the Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux, and the feistiness of the Cowgirl in Agnes deMille’s Rodeo. Miss Sabovick-Bleich toured with the Pavlova Celebration Ballet, Kozlov and Friends, and International Stars of Ballet. Her teaching experience includes ballet and pointe classes for all levels.

DAVID TAMAKI (Coach) A former principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet, David began his formal dance training at New Jersey School of ballet at age 7. He also studied at the Joffrey Workshop in Texas and with Miami City Ballet. He was noted for his work in Allegro Brillante, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, For Ella, Saturday Night, Trepak and the Cavalier in Nutcracker, and Rodeo,in which he wowed audience and critics as the tap dancing Champion Roper. He coaches the Junior Company and is on the faculty of New Jersey School of Ballet. He was recently appointed Director of Advancement, where his principal tasks are development and fundraising.

David also directs the Dancing with Parkinson’s program.

BRIAN COAKLEY (Production Stage Manager) served as Assistant Technical Director at Kean University’s Wilkins theatre for 7 years, assisted for 3 years at Raritan Valley Community College and with New Jersey Ballet productions at both venues. He was

responsible for all aspects of production for NJB’s premieres of Giselle, Esmeralda and Tom Sawyer.

He also designed lighting for Minneapolis Ballet’s productions of Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rodeo.

Mr. Coakley holds a B.A. in Communications from Kean University. He joined New Jersey Ballet in 2001.

NANCY HARTMANN (Marketing/Public Relations) joined New Jersey Ballet in 1991, bringing a wealth of experience in advertising and public relations. A writer by training, she has written scripts for radio and produced and hosted a cable TV program. She has also written fortunes for fortune cookies. While serving as Director of the Somerset/Hunterdon Business & Education Partnership, Nancy developed a highly successful board game/training tool to address school shootings and other violence by training educators in various aspects of school safety. The game, EduCaution, has been used in school districts across the county. Nancy graduated from Douglass College with at B.A. in English.

MYRA TANG (Wardrobe Mistress) trained as an artist/designer at University of Cincinnati and holds two degrees from Rhode Island School of Design. She spent more than 10 years in the luxury retail business working for such companies as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Saks Fifth Avenue and Mikimoto, from whom she received an award for Global Strategies and Planning as part of Mikimoto’s 110th Anniversary. A lifelong dance student, Ms. Tang made her New York City Ballet debut at age 10 as one of Oberon’s (Edward Villella’s) fairies in Midsummer

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Named “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians.

Under the bold leadership of Music Director Jacques Lacombe, the NJSO presents classical, pops and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, universities and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity.

In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include NJSO Youth Orchestras, comprising three ensembles and a preparatory group, school-time Concerts for Young People performances and multiple offerings—including the El Sistema-inspired NJSO CHAMPS (Character, Achievement and Music Project)—that provide and promote in-school instrumental instruction as part of the NJSO Academy. The NJSO’s REACH (Resources for Education and Community Harmony) chamber music program annually brings original programs—designed and performed by NJSO musicians—to a variety of settings, reaching as many as 17,000 people in nearly all of New Jersey’s 21 counties.

In each string section, members are listed in order of seniority. The musicians and librarians employed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra are members of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.

ABOUT OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS As one of New Jersey’s anchor arts institutions, Mayo Performing Arts Center education programs are critical to our mission to provide cultural enrichment for both young audiences and the general public. MPAC is committed to the extension of arts education and appreciation through theatre classes, workshops and seminars, school and community outreach programs, adult enrichment programs and teacher training. Our education programs provide significant opportunities for young people, increasing their exposure to the arts and expanding our cultural contribution to the community.

DID YOU KNOW? MPAC was one of five performing arts programs from around the country to have been invited to send students to Broadway at the White House. Members of our Performing Arts Company --- all who have taken classes for several years at our Performing Arts School -- had the opportunity to take masterclasses from the likes of Matthew Morrison (Finding Neverland), Gloria Estefan (On Your Feet) Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked) and other prominent Broadway actors, directors and producers.

Several of our students were showcased in the TLC special, Broadway at the White House, which aired on Thanksgiving.
