The Story of Nutcracker

CAROLYN CLARK, Founder/Director PAUL HILLIARD McRAE, Assistant Director LUBA GULYAEVA, Ballet Mistress ACT ONE CAROLYN TENER BROWN, Repertory Coach KOTOE Repertory Coach his wife, and their children, The curtain rises on a Christmas Eve party at theKOJIMA-NOA, home of the Mayor, ROSEMARY SABOVICK-BLEICH, Repertory Coach Clara and Fritz. Everyone is engaged in games and dancing when old Herr Drosselmeyer DAVID TAMAKI, Repertory Coach

arrives with his handsome nephew. At first the children are afraid of Drosselmeyer, but their fear disappears when they discover what the old man has brought: a life-size porcelain doll VILLELLA, Artistic Advisor and a soldier doll! Drosselmeyer distributes EDWARD toy swords and trumpets to the boys and dolls to all the girls...all except Clara. Drosselmeyer The Company gives her a colorful Nutcracker. Fritz grabs for the Nutcracker and breaks it. Drosselmeyerʼs nephew helps Clara tuck the broken Nutcracker JUSTIN ESTELLE, LEONID FLEGMATOV, ALBINA GHAZARYAN into her doll's bed. The guests leave and the family retires for the night. ESNEL RAMOS HERNANDEZ, SE HYUN JIN, ILSE KAPTEYN

As the empty living room grows dark, Clara returns for one last look at the Nutcracker. She EMMANUEL MARTIROSYAN, NAREK MARTIROSYAN falls asleep on the sofa and a magic spell creeps over the room. Giant mice appear from RISA MOCHIZUKI, GABRIELLA NOA, EUNICE SUBA behind the fireplace. Child-size toy soldiers pursue the mice. The Christmas tree grows very MARI SUGAWA, ANDRE LUIS TEIXEIRA tall. The room changes and everything disappears except the now-giant Nutcracker who CATHERINE WHITING, YUUKI YAMAMOTO leads the toy soldiers against the mice. Clara wakes up and helps the Nutcracker defeat the RACHEL CARINA, KAITLYN DALinto BON, a JACKSON FERREIRA prince, and he and Clara glide away. As Mouse King. ACT TWO CHRISTINA THERYOUNG, HUMBERTO TEIXEIRA Clara and her Prince journey toANDthe Kingdom of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her court await. The SugarQUINCY PlumSOUTHERLAND shows the young couple to a pair of thrones and the whole kingdom comes to entertain them. There are dances from faraway lands, Mother Ginger and New Jersey Ballet Board of Directors her Clown Children, the Waltz of the Flowers and the grand pas de deux. The entire court James R. COMPANY DANCERS ALBINA GHAZARYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School and joined the Armenian National Ballet as a soloist in 2004. In 2011, she joined the Israel Ballet company as a principal dancer. Albina is a laureate of the Grigorovich International Ballet competition in 2010. She has extensive classical ballet repertoire including Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Nutcracker, Carmen, and Spartacus, to name a few. She joined NJB in 2015.

Martirosyan was awarded the Moves Khorenatsi Medal by the President of Armenia for his significant contributions to the development of culture and his outstanding staging of the ballet Spartacus. In 2011 he became a principal with the Israel Ballet. Repertoire includes Don Quixote, Carmen, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker as a principal dancer. He joined NJB in 2015.

RISA MOCHIZUKI was born in Tokyo and trained at the Royal Ballet of Flanders, and Kishibi and Kawasaki Ballet Schools in Japan. Winning medals in several international competitions, she danced solo and principal roles with the Teatrul Balet Sibiu, Romania, the Constanta National Opera Ballet and the Timisoara National Opera Ballet. Principal roles include Don Quixote, Paquita, Nutcracker, Chopiniana and La Vivandiere. SE HYUN JIN began her training at Daejeon She joined NJB in 2014. Art High School, South Korea. She continued her training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet, GABRIELLA NOA began her training locally in Washington, DC. AVA PRENTICE began her training at the Ballet Barre School of Performing Arts before joining New Jersey School of Ballet’s Intensive Program. As a member of New Jersey Ballet’s Junior Company, Ava had the opportunity to perform in the company’s productions of Nutcracker, Giselle, and Esmeralda among many others. In addition to her training at the New Jersey School of Ballet, Ava has attended summer intensives at Ballet West and the French Academie of Ballet. Ava graduated Cum Laude from Blair Academy and currently attends Drew University as a French major.

CAROLYN CLARK A native of New Jersey, Ms. Clark is Founder/Director of New Jersey Ballet Company and Director of New Jersey School of Ballet. Ms. Clark performed classical and contemporary ballet with American Ballet Theatre and toured with that company throughout North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Africa, in addition to tours in the US and Canada. Additional ballet company credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Radio City Ballet, and as principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Clark’s professional credits also include Broadway musicals, and television shows, most notably The Bell Telephone Hour where she was assistant to the choreographer. She is a founding member of ArtPride New Jersey, served two years on the President’s Council on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center, and five years on the Advisory Board of Channel 13. Ms. Clark was honored in 1976 by Governor Brendan Byrne for her “unique contribution to the arts of the State of New Jersey.” She has also been honored with a New Jersey Pride Award, and by the National Society of Arts and Letters and DanceNJ. Ms. Clark attended Rutgers University.

EDWARD VILLELLA A Kennedy Center honoree, Mr. Villella is perhaps the greatest American premier danseur ever. Among his accomplishments are Emmy Award winner, star of New York City Ballet, guest artist with the Bolshoi, performer at President Kennedy’s Inaugural, and first American to guest with the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1968, the Bell Telephone Hour’s salute to Villella became an Emmy Award-winning special. His Harlequin – A Patchwork of Love, the first ballet ever commissioned by an American TV network, resulted in Emmy Awards for the show and for Villella as choreographer, producer and star! He is a former member of the President’s Council on the Arts and a past recipient of the prestigious Capezio Award. Mr. Villella is founder of Miami City Ballet and has been Artistic Advisor to New Jersey Ballet since 1972.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR PAUL H. MCRAE trained at the San Francisco School of Ballet, New Jersey School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet. He became an apprentice with New Jersey Ballet at age 16. In 1974 joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, while there he attended Point Park College. In Pittsburgh he studied and worked with Nicholas Petrov, Frederic Franklin, Leonid Massine and John Gilpin. He rejoined New Jersey Ballet in 1978 performing a wide range of solo and principal roles in the Company’s extensive repertory. Named Assistant to the Director of New Jersey Ballet in 1990 and he became Assistant Director in September 2001. Mr. McRae is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet and for the past twenty years has been on the residence ballet faculty at Kean University. He is a cofounder and former President of Dance/New Jersey, a board member of Art Pride New Jersey and New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and he also serves as Co-Chair of the Arts Advisory Committee at Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey.

LUBA GULYAEVA (Ballet Mistress) A graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, Ms. Gulyaeva joined the Kirov Ballet in 1972, dancing featured roles in Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadere and Don Quixote. In the 1980s, she was invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join the staff of American Ballet Theatre where she taught company class and coached the dancers. She also taught all levels at the ABT School. Additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, the School of American Ballet in New York, and seminars at numerous universities in the U.S. PETER DI BONAVETURA (Coach) credits include several years as principal dancer with Cleveland Ballet where he danced principal roles in numerous ballets including Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, Coppelia, Balanchine’s Apollo, Midsummer Night’s Dream and the standard classical pas de deux. He also guested numerous times in Caracas with ballerina Zhanda Rodriguez. Choreographer Fleming Flindt invited him to Denmark to film his Lucifer’s Daughter, a ballet to celebrate the Queen of Denmark’s 25th Anniversary. Most recently, he was a principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. ROSEMARY SABOVICK-BLEICH (Coach) danced with New Jersey Ballet for 20 years. A versatile ballerina, she was recognized for her strong classical performances as the

MPAC’S MISSION Mayo Performing Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, presents a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich, and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey. MPAC is dedicated to providing exceptional arts education to children and adults of all ages and abilities. Our Performing Arts School (PAS), founded in 2006, is a performance-based theatrical training program which serves approximately 700 students per year with over 20 classes a week within a supportive and creative atmosphere.
