The New Jersey State Council on the Arts has designated New Jersey Ballet a Major Arts Institution in recognition of “artistic excellence, substantial programming, and broad public service.” New Jersey Ballet’s extensive performance schedule is made possible in part by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and by generous corporate, foundation and individual contributors.

Company History For sixty years, NJB has thrilled audiences from Bergen to Cape May with top quality professional ballet, giving hundreds of thousands of adults and children their first introduction to ballet and inspiring in many a lifelong love of the arts. New Jersey Ballet has also taken the best of New Jersey arts to audiences in other parts of the country and set records on international tours to Bermuda, India, Italy, Russia and Taiwan. The founding of New Jersey Ballet created a profound change in the state’s cultural landscape. During its 22 week season, NJB’s critically acclaimed dancers perform a variety of works from classical, contemporary, and jazz ballet, as well as new works from some of the most exciting choreographers working today. This repertory includes works by Agnes deMille, Antony Tudor, Petipa, Johan Renvall, Pedro Ruiz, and many more. The company also has one of the largest collections of ballets for children in the country. The highlight of the season for thousands of families is NJB’s Nutcracker, the longest running original professional production in the state. This year, the company will give 22 performances in four venues statewide, fourteen of them with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at Mayo PAC in Morristown. The production debuted in 1971 with Edward Villella, then an international star with New York City Ballet, as the Cavalier. Today, after more than 900 performances and over a million viewers, it has become a cherished holiday tradition with three generations throughout the state and beyond. In 2008, the production made history as the first full length classical ballet ever performed in India, where it sold out three performances at that country’s Performing Arts Center in Mumbai. New Jersey Ballet is designated a Major Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in recognition of its “artistic excellence, substantial programming and broad public service.” The company is a three-time winner of the title New Jersey’s Favorite Dance Company in the People’s Choice competition. Barbara Gilford, dance writer for The New York Times New Jersey Weekly for more than ten years, wrote this about the impact and value New Jersey Ballet has for New Jersey.

THE STORY OF NUTCRACKER ACT ONE The curtain rises on a Christmas Eve party at the home of the Mayor, his wife, and their children, Clara and Fritz. Everyone is engaged in games and dancing when old Herr Drosselmeyer arrives with his handsome nephew. At first the children are afraid of the old man, but their fear disappears when they discover what the old man has brought: a life-size porcelain doll and a soldier doll! Drosselmeyer distributes toy swords and trumpets to the boys and dolls to all the girls….all except Clara. The old gentleman presents her with a colorful Nutcracker. Jealous Fritz grabs for the Nutcracker and breaks it. Drosselmeyer’s nephew helps Clara tuck the broken Nutcracker into her doll’s bed. The guests leave and the family retires for the night. As the empty living room grows dark, Clara returns for one last look at her Nutcracker. She falls asleep on the sofa and a magic spell creeps over the room. Giant mice appear from behind the walls. Child-sized toy soldiers pursue the mice. The Christmas tree grows very tall. The room changes and everything disappears except the now-giant Nutcracker who leads the toy soldiers in a battle against the mice. Suddenly, Clara gets up and helps the Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King. The Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince, and he and Clara glide away in a strange flying Swan Boat. As they pass through a strange, enchanted forest, the King and Queen of Snowflakes and their swirling subjects dance a splendid waltz. ACT TWO Clara and her Prince journey to the Kingdom of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her court await. The Sugar Plum shows the young couple to a pair of thrones and the whole kingdom comes to entertain them. There are dancers from faraway lands, Mother Ginger and her Clown Children, and a garden of Waltzing Flowers. Finally, the Sugar Plum dances a pas de deux with her Cavalier. The entire court joins in a final waltz, and the curtain falls as Clara climbs into the Swan Boat and sails home.

COMPANY DANCERS JUSTIN ESTELLE began his training at National Ballet School in Canada. He attended summer intensives at American Ballet Theatre and the School of American Ballet in New York. Mr. Estelle was a trainee at Richmond Ballet before joining First State Ballet Theatre where he danced for eight years, performing many soloist and principal roles. He comes to NJB after dancing with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet for its final two Washington seasons. LEONID FLEGMATOV graduated from Moscow State Academy of Choreography in 2001 and joined the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts GITIS as a soloist. His repertoire includes principal roles in such ballets as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Futile Precaution. Leonid was awarded a prize in the First International Chabukiani-Balanchine Ballet Competition in 2001. He has toured in Europe, Asia and the United States and has danced with Miami City Ballet, Columbia Classical Ballet, International Ballet Theatre and Grand Rapids Ballet Company. A member of NJ Ballet in 20072008, he rejoined the company in 2011. ALBINA GHAZARYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School and joined the Armenian National Ballet as a soloist in 2004. In 2011, she joined the Israel Ballet company as a principal dancer. Albina is a laureate of the Grigorovich International Ballet competition in 2010. She has extensive classical ballet repertoire including Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Nutcracker, Carmen, and Spartacus, to name a few. She joined NJB in 2015. ESNEL RAMOS HERNANDEZ trained at National Ballet School of Havana and joined the National Ballet Company of Havana under the direction of Alicia Alonso. He danced solo and principal roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, and Carmen. Mr. Hernandez was a principal dancer with Jalisco Ballet in Mexico where his repertoire included Romeo & Juliet, La Fille Mal Gardee and Nutcracker. This is his first season with NJB. SE HYUN JIN began her training at Daejeon Art High School, South Korea. She continued her training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet, in Washington, DC. Se Hyun danced solo and principal roles with Milwaukee Ballet, Charleston City Ballet and Columbia Classical Ballet. Her repertoire includes such ballets as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Don Quixote. This is her first season with NJB.
ILSE KAPTEYN began her training at the East Street Ballet, Massachusetts. She continued training with Irina Vakhromeeva while a student at Deerfield Academy. Ilse attended summer programs at the School of American Ballet, the Chautauqua Institution, and American Ballet Theatre NY. Ilse traveled to Moscow in the summer of 2011 and was accepted at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Ilse joined NJB in 2012. EMMANUEL MARTIROSYAN graduated from the Armenian National School of Ballet and attended the Joffrey School of Ballet in NYC on full scholarship. In 2014 he placed second in the Ballet Competition in Russia. An apprentice at the National Ballet Theater in Armenia, he appeared as a soloist in several productions in Yerevan, Armenia and as an actor in numerous television series on Armenian Television. Emmanuel was a top 10 finalist at the 2018 World Ballet Competition. NAREK MARTIROSYAN trained at the Armenian National Ballet School. Upon graduation, he joined the Armenian National Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer. Mr. Martirosyan was awarded the Moves Khorenatsi Medal by the President of Armenia for his significant contributions to the development of culture and his outstanding staging of the ballet Spartacus. In 2011 he became a principal with the Israel Ballet. Repertoire includes Don Quixote, Carmen, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker as a principal dancer. He joined NJB in 2015. RISA MOCHIZUKI was born in Tokyo and trained at the Royal Ballet of Flanders, and Kishibi and Kawasaki Ballet Schools in Japan. Winning medals in several international competitions, she danced solo and principal roles with the Teatrul Balet Sibiu, Romania, the Constanta National Opera Ballet and the Timisoara National Opera Ballet. Principal roles include Don Quixote, Paquita, Nutcracker, Chopiniana and La Vivandiere. She joined NJB in 2014. GABRIELLA NOA began her training locally and entered New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 8. At 11, she performed the coveted role of Clara in New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker at Paper Mill—one of the youngest ever to dance the role. Ms. Noa was a scholarship student at the Pennsylvania Ballet, and returned to New Jersey and NJB in 1999. Her repertory includes Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, and roles in Allegro Brilliante, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Tango, For Ella, Saturday Night and the Cowgirl in deMille’s Rodeo.
EUNICE SUBA enrolled at New Jersey School of Ballet at the age of 11 and at 13 joined the intensive program. A Junior Company member for 3 years, she was chosen to dance the coveted role of Clara in NJ Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ms. Suba received scholarships to summer intensive programs at Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York and French Academie. She won a Gold Medal at the 2018 Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition NYC. MARI SUGAWA was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Japan where she received her training. She joined the Matsuyama Ballet Company in 1994 and performed as a soloist in such classics as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Coppelia, Cinderella, and Giselle. She also performed Ballet Ballet Ballet, a contemporary work by Matsuyama Company choreographer Tetsutaro Shimizu. Ms. Sugawa has performed with Ballet Austin, New York Theatre Ballet and Eglevsky Ballet. Her Juliet, Princess Aurora and Black Swan have met with high critical praise. ANDRÉ LUIS TEIXEIRA began studying ballet in his native Brazil at the age of 8. Six years later, he joined Sesiminas Companhia, where he rose through the ranks from corp de ballet to principal dancer. His repertoire includes leading roles in such classical ballets as Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Sleeping Beauty, Paquita, Swan Lake and Nutcracker. Andre has won numerous gold and silver medals in international competitions. He joined NJB in 2013. CATHERINE WHITING trained at the NJ School of Ballet and also attended programs at School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She was part of the NJ School of Ballet ensemble that took first place twice in the Youth Dance Festival of New Jersey. She also won first place in pas de deux in that competition. Her repertory includes Fairy Doll, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote. She joined NJB in 2011. YUUKI YAMAMOTO trained at the Hakucho Ballet Academy in his native Japan. He was a finalist in the Japan Grand Prix and won a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He has appeared in Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Flames of Paris, Sleeping Beauty, Gopak, Nutcracker and many others. Yuuki joined NJB in 2010. RACHEL CARINA is a New Jersey native, born and raised in Morris County. She began her ballet studies under Michael Shannon and Sara Knight. She studied at New Jersey School of Ballet for three years, two of them as a member of the Junior Company. She won a full scholarship to The Harid Conservatory in Boca
Raton and upon graduation was accepted into Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Graduate Program. Rachel has performed professionally with the Gainesville Ballet, Victoria Ballet and various Argentine Tango performances. KAITLYN DAL BON trained at New Jersey School of Ballet in the Intensive Program. A member of the Junior Company for 3 years, she performed the demanding role of Clara in NJ Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ms. Dal Bon earned a Silver Medal at the Youth American Grand Prix and First Place at the National Society of Arts & Letters state competition and went on to become a national finalist. During the summer she studied on scholarship at the Bolshoi Academy, Russia and American Ballet Theatre, New York. She is currently studying at Columbia University. JACKSON FERREIRA began training in his native Brazil under Adriana Asaf. He continued his training with the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of the Joffrey Ballet. In 2015 he joined the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company. In 2018 Mr. Ferreira was named Capezio Brazil Dancer and has spent the year representing Capezio throughout Brazil. This is his first season with NJB. NAHOKO NAKAMOTO was born in Japan where she trained at the Yuasa Ballet Academy. She has also trained in Vancouver, Canada and at Alvin Ailey School. Her repertory includes roles in Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote. ____
HUMBERTO TEIXEIRA was born in Brazil where he began studying martial arts at the age of 7. He rapidly excelled at karate, kung fu, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and capoeira. As a teenager, to improve his martial arts technique, he began a serious study of ballet. Humberto has performed solo and principal roles with Dance Company Sesi Minas, Brazilian Dance Company, El Paso Dance Company, Columbia Classical Ballet in South Carolina, and Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Germany. In addition, he is an awardwinning choreographer whose ballet, Tamoia, was premiered by NJB in May 2011.
ARTISTIC STAFF FOUNDER/DIRECTOR CAROLYN CLARK A native of New Jersey, Ms. Clark is Founder/Director of New Jersey Ballet Company and Director of New Jersey School of Ballet. Ms. Clark performed classical and contemporary ballet with American Ballet Theatre and toured with that company throughout North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Africa, in addition to tours in the US and Canada. Additional ballet company credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Radio City Ballet, and as principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Clark’s professional credits also include Broadway musicals, and television shows, most notably The Bell Telephone Hour where she was assistant to the choreographer. She is a founding member of ArtPride New Jersey, served two years on the President’s Council on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center, and five years on the Advisory Board of Channel 13. Ms. Clark was honored in 1976 by Governor Brendan Byrne for her “unique contribution to the arts of the State of New Jersey.” She has also been honored with a New Jersey Pride Award, and by the National Society of Arts and Letters and DanceNJ. Ms. Clark attended Rutgers University. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR PAUL H. MCRAE trained at the San Francisco School of Ballet, New Jersey School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet. He became an apprentice with New Jersey Ballet at age 16. In 1974 joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, while there he attended Point Park College. In Pittsburgh he studied and worked with Nicholas Petrov, Frederic Franklin, Leonid Massine and John Gilpin. He rejoined New Jersey Ballet in 1978 performing a wide range of solo and principal roles in the Company’s extensive repertory. Named Assistant to the Director of New Jersey Ballet in 1990 and he became Assistant Director in September 2001. Mr. McRae is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet and for the past twenty years has been on the residence ballet faculty at Kean University. He is a co-founder and former President of Dance/New Jersey, a board member of Art Pride New Jersey and New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and he also serves as Co-Chair of the Arts Advisory Committee at Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey. ARTISTIC ADVISOR EDWARD VILLELLA A Kennedy Center honoree, Mr. Villella is certainly America’s most celebrated male dancer. He did much to popularize the role of the male in dance through
his supreme artistry and athleticism. Among his accomplishments are Emmy Award winner, star of New York City Ballet, guest artist with the Bolshoi, performer at President Kennedy’s Inaugural, and first American to guest with the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1968, the Bell Telephone Hour’s salute to Villella became an Emmy Awardwinning special. His Harlequin – A Patchwork of Love, the first ballet ever commissioned by an American TV network, resulted in Emmy Awards for the show and for Villella as choreographer, producer and star! He is a former member of the President’s Council on the Arts and a past recipient of the prestigious Capezio Award. He was recently selected one of “America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures” by The Dance Heritage Coalition. Mr. Villella founded Miami City Ballet, built it into a leading regional company and led it on triumphant engagements in New York and Paris. He has been Artistic Advisor to New Jersey Ballet since 1972. LUBA GULYAEVA (Ballet Mistress) A graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, Ms. Gulyaeva joined the Kirov Ballet in 1972, dancing featured roles in Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadere and Don Quixote. In the 1980s, she was invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join the staff of American Ballet Theatre where she taught company class and coached the dancers. She also taught all levels at the ABT School. Additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, the School of American Ballet in New York, and seminars at numerous universities in the U.S. CAROLYN TENER BROWN (Coach) began her ballet training at age 7 at New Jersey School of Ballet and was NJB’s original Clara in the company’s first production of Nutcracker. Ms. Brown was a soloist with American Ballet Theatre for 7 years and later danced in a variety of Broadway shows including Hair, Carousel, Brigadoon, Fame-The Musical, La Cage Aux Folles and Phantom of the Opera, where she danced the role of Meg (the best friend) for 8 years. She has worked with some of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century including Agnes deMille, Twyla Tharp and Anthony Tudor. She has also appeared on television in All My Children, The Sopranos and several PBS programs. She teaches at New Jersey School of Ballet and coaches the Company and the Junior Company. ROSEMARY SABOVICK-BLEICH (Coach) danced with New Jersey Ballet for 20 years. A versatile ballerina, she was recognized for her strong classical performances as the Sugar Plum Fairy in Nutcracker, her bravura virtuosity
in George Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux, and her feistiness as the Cowgirl in Agnes deMille’s Rodeo. Ms. Sabovick-Bleich toured internationally with Pavlova Celebration Ballet, Kozlov and Friends, and International Stars of Ballet. Her teaching experience includes ballet and pointe classes for all levels as well as jazz and tap for young dancers.

BRIAN COAKLEY (Production Stage Manager) served as Assistant Technical Director at Kean University’s Wilkins theatre for 7 years, assisted for 3 years at Raritan Valley Community College and with New Jersey Ballet productions at both venues. He was responsible for all aspects of production for NJB’s premieres of Giselle, Esmeralda and Tom Sawyer. He also designed lighting for Minneapolis Ballet’s productions of Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rodeo. Mr. Coakley holds a B.A. in Communications from Kean University. He joined New Jersey Ballet in 2001. MELANY SCHWARZ (Wardrobe Mistress) trained as a costume designer at James Madison University and received a BA degree in Theatre and Dance. She spent several years doing design, construction and wardrobe work in film, theatre and regional dance. Ms. Schwarz has worked on

NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Named “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians. Music Director Xian Zhang—a “dynamic podium presence” The New York Times has praised for her “technical abilities, musicianship and maturity”—continues her acclaimed leadership of the NJSO. The Orchestra presents classical, pops and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick, Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, universities and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity. In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music.
