A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome, and thank you for joining us for our production of Newsies!

Inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, Newsies tells the story of young newspaper sellers who band together to stand up against unfair treatment. It’s a highenergy, heart-filled journey that celebrates resilience, friendship, and the power of young people coming together to make a difference.

Newsies first captured audiences as a 1992 Disney film, but it was the Broadway production that truly made it a theatrical phenomenon. The show opened at the Nederlander Theatre in March 2012, originally slated for a limited run — but the overwhelming response turned it into a Broadway favorite, running for over two years. With a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Newsies received eight Tony Award nominations and won two: Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) and Best Original Score.

More than a historical tale, Newsies reminds us that change often begins with those who are underestimated. It’s a celebration of resilience, unity, and the belief that even the smallest voices can echo loudly when joined together. These themes are as meaningful now as they were over a century ago.

I’ve truly enjoyed every moment of directing this show. From the first rehearsal to the final performance, it has been a joy to watch this talented cast and crew bring Newsies to life. Their passion, dedication, and teamwork have made this production something truly special, and I am so proud of what they’ve accomplished.

To our wonderful audience, thank you for your support. Your presence and encouragement mean the world to us. We are so excited to share this story with you, and we hope you leave the theater inspired to “Seize the Day.”

With heartfelt gratitude,

Cooper,

You are always ready to seize the day!

We are so proud of you and love watching you on stage!

Lots of love, Mom, Dad, and Jake

Juliette,

“Seize the day” on stage as you bring the spirit of Newsies to life! Your courage and charisma shine as bright as the headlines. We couldn’t be prouder of you!

Love, Mom, Dad, and Logan

Thank you MPAC and best wishes to the cast and crew!

Congratulations Joe!

THE WORLD WILL KNOW about you and the cast and crew of NEWSIES after this weekend’s shows.

Break a leg everyone!

The Lanigan Family

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

We are thrilled to present Disney’s Newsies this year – our 11th spring production! Newsies was originally scheduled as our spring production in 2020, but was postponed due to Covid. Five years later, we are excited to finally bring this wonderful show to our stage. It is so worth the wait!

This production has been a labor of love for our cast and crew, and the experience for the performers will be priceless. Our young performers get to work with and learn from seasoned professionals who share their love for the performing arts in a nurturing, supportive team environment that reflects the heart of MPAC’s educational philosophy.

MPAC’s Education Department is a leader in arts education in New Jersey. Year after year, thousands of children get to partake in arts experiences, including Performing Arts School classes, The Miracle Project™, our performing arts programs for children on the autism spectrum and with other specific needs, and as members of The Performing Arts Company, our talented musical ambassadors, to name a few. For information on all of the education and outreach programs we provide, please visit our website.

On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees of MPAC, I extend our deepest gratitude to our many sponsors, led by Trend Motors, for their generous support of Newsies. Your commitment has been instrumental in bringing this production to life.

A special congratulations to Cathy Roy, our Education Director and Director of Newsies. For two decades, Cathy’s visionary leadership has inspired countless children and families, enabling us to offer exceptional educational programs that reach thousands each year.

We also wish to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our entire cast and creative team, the dedicated production crew, and especially our talented youth performers. Your collective passion and hard work have made this production a resounding success. We are all so proud!

Best wishes,

There’s a story behind the story and Miles, we are so proud of you and yours.

‘So whatever happens! Let’s begin.’

To the cast and crew of Newsies, break legs and big congrats on all your hard work!
