The Miracle Project uses a groundbreaking methodology to provide individuals with autism and other disabilities the tools to build communication, social skills, community, and greater self-esteem through inclusive theater and expressive arts programs. We are the exclusive New Jersey provider for this program that will launch at our Performing Arts School in January, and we need your support to make the Morristown Miracle a reality.

The Mayo Performing Arts Center serves the Northern New Jersey area with over 200 performances annually that touch the lives of over 200,000 patrons, including over 40,000 children.

For 22 years, we have brought the world’s greatest entertainers to our hometown, provide vibrant arts education experiences for children, and serve as an economic engine that drives more than $15 million in annual revenue to the area.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our honoree, Morristown Medical Center, for their support of our Theatre. I also thank Tony Award winner Laura Benanti, who will be entertaining you tonight along with our own talented Performing Arts Company.

Every year, the highlight of the Starlight Ball is when our Performing Arts Company takes the stage. These talented young performers volunteer their time and serve as our ambassadors, performing at many venues throughout the year, including hospitals, senior centers and for nonprofit organizations. We are so proud of their dedication and hard work.

It takes a small army of dedicated people to make this great fundraising event possible. This includes the Starlight Ball Committee, MPAC’s hardworking staff, and our committed Board of Trustees under the leadership of Joseph M. Goryeb. This is truly a team effort to organize the Starlight Ball every year and make it a night to remember!

Community • Launched a free family movie series with three events this summer (with fall events to be announced soon) •W ith the support of BASF, presented two free Earth Day lectures for the fourth year in a row for students as well as the community.

Mayo Performing Arts Center has an impact on Morristown and the surrounding communities that goes far beyond the world-class entertainment that takes place on our stage. From outreach programs at Neighborhood House and Children on the Green, to free events such as Music Beyond Borders, to education programs that take place in distressed communities such as Paterson and at the Theatre, MPAC enthusiastically continues to be an arts leader, a trusted community partner and an essential gathering place.

• Donated hundreds of tickets to area organizations, schools and non-profits for their fundraising efforts.

• Donated approximately 1,600 tickets to area non-profits to provide arts experiences that their constituents may not have otherwise been able to afford.

• Donated approximately $39,000 in space and equipment rentals to community organizations who rent MPAC. • Have over 150 local residents who serve as volunteers and ambassadors.

• Retained title of Major Presenting Organization by New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Highlights from the past season include: Concerts •W e had over 200 events on our stage, including headliners, emerging artists, school events and more.

• Over 200,000 people were served by MPAC programs, including ticketed events, outreach activities and education programs.

• Over 60 performances sold out. Memorable performances included Kristin Chenoweth, Sarah McLachlan, Jackson Browne, Mamma Mia!, Bob Newhart and Criss Angel.

• T he Nutcracker drew over 12,000 people into Morristown across 14 performances during the holiday season.

• MPAC drew audiences from all 21 NJ counties, as well as New York, Pennsylvania and other surrounding states.

• Named Outstanding Historic Theatre 2016 by League of Historical American Theatres.

Education • Over 670 students participated in Performing Arts School programs.

• T he Education Department’s Spring Musical Mary Poppins, with a cast of over 45, was performed to over 4,500 people over four performances, including two sold out performances.

• Six MPAC students were among 40 from around the nation invited to participate in “Broadway at The White House,” hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. The event featured master classes with Broadway luminaries and the day concluded with a taping of a TV special that aired on TLC network in which several MPAC students were featured.

• MPAC’s “PAS on the Road” programs brought the arts to children in the Paterson School District as well as Morristown’s Neighborhood House and Children on the Green.

• Our economic impact on the region was over $15 million. (Americans for the Arts Economic Prosperity Calculator)

• The Performing Arts Company performed at over 30 local fundraising events.

• MPAC ranked as the 48th most attended mid-sized PAC in the world (Pollstar mid-year 2016 rankings); and a top 20 tourist location in the state (NJ Biz), based on attendance.

• Over $5,600 was provided in PAS scholarships to local students in need.

• Over 60 students were honored as Music Students of the Month.

• MPAC served as Region 4 host to the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition.

Community Outreach • In partnership with Morris Arts, the free Music Beyond Borders program returned to the Morristown Green with four free performances, with an attendance of over 2,000.

• Participated in creative placemaking by launching a “Performers on the Plaza” and “Emerging Artists” series to provide a showcase for new performers.

• MPAC continued to offer the Theatre at low cost to non-profit partners such as New Jersey Ballet, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Morristown Festival of Books, First Night Morris County and Morris Education Foundation’s Morristown on Stage.

• Over 200 New Jersey-based visual artists had their works displayed in our two galleries.

PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY STARLIGHT BALL 2016

The Performing Arts Company (PAC) is an ensemble of 20-25 students, ages 13-21, who perform Broadway-style songs at hospitals, community events, nonprofit fundraisers and local/regional festivals, free-of-charge throughout the state. For 11 years, the program has been providing a platform for youth who share a passion for the performing arts to use their talents to give back to the community as they receive comprehensive training, also free-ofcharge, from experienced teaching artists. Each PAC member is a talented singer, dancer and actor who has successfully auditioned. The secondary population served is the 18,000+ audience members annually who enjoy PAC performances. The PAC performs at about 30 New Jersey venues each season. In addition to frequently performing with MPAC’s accomplished guest artists, in the past year they have been invited to perform at Walt Disney World and the White House, and most recently with Kristin Chenoweth in My Love Letter to Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and the Dramatists Guild Fund Gala at Gotham Hall in NYC, elevating their artistic learning experience.

Their performance tonight is dedicated to raising awareness of The Miracle Project, a new arts education program that will be offered in January at the MPAC Performing Arts School.

THE BLANCHE & IRVING LAURIE FOUNDATION

Tony Award-winner LAURA BENANTI has most recently garnered rave reviews for her hilarious portrayal of Melania Trump on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

This summer, she completed her 2016 Tony nominated role as Amalia Balash in the hit Broadway Musical, She Loves Me. Laura also received Outer Critics Circle, Drama League and Drama Desk Award nominations for this role.

In 2015, Laura joined the cast of Supergirl, playing the role of Alura Zor-El. Additional TV credits include Nashville guest-starring as songbird Sadie Stone, The Good Wife and HBO’s Nurse Jackie.

In addition to television work and her critically acclaimed performance as Elsa Schrader in NBC’s The Sound of Music LIVE, Ms. Benanti is a highly celebrated, five time Tony Award-nominated stage actress who took Broadway by storm at the age of 18.

She currently resides in Manhattan.
