Trooper who shot at teens cleared Mistakenly thought they were trying to break into his home SPECIAL TO THE DAILY RECORD

An off-duty state trooper who fired three shots at teenagers he mistakenly thought were trying to break into his home will not face any criminal charges in connection with the incident. A state grand jury declined to file any criminal charges against the trooper who fired at a car occupied by three teens during an incident that began at 1:50 a.m. on July 26, at the trooper’s house on Whispering Woods Lane in Sparta. The shooting was investigated by the attorney general’s Shooting Response Team, and the following details were released by the Attorney General’s Office: The trooper, whose name was not released, lived with his wife and three young children in the home. Both the trooper and his wife told investigators that the trooper was awakened by his wife after she heard banging noises coming from a rear sliding door and was concerned that someone was attempting to break into the home. Morristown sees 2 sex assaults of a child in 5 days PEGGY WRIGHT @PEGGYWRIGHTDR

MORRISTOWN - A second resident of Abbett Avenue has been charged, in less than a week, with sexually assaulting a child, according to criminal complaints. A man identified as Orlando Soto, 49, was charged Tuesday by Detective Chris Oakley with aggravated sexual assault, child endangerment, sexual assault and attempted criminal sexual assault on a girl who is under the age of 13. Soto is accused of touching intimate parts of the victim’s body and engaging in sex acts with her, according to criminal complaints filed in Superior Court. Judge Stephen Taylor, sitting in Morristown, on Wednesday reviewed Soto’s bail and maintained it at $150,000. If he makes bail, Soto is not permitted to have contact with minors under the age of 18. Soto lives on Abbett Avenue, the same street but not the same address given in court records for undocumented immigrant Jose Bueso. Bueso, 20 and allegedly in the United States illegally from Honduras, was charged on June 3 by a town detective with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a minor, sexual assault and criminal sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. Bueso’s bail also has been set at $150,000, and both he and Soto are being held in the Morris County Jail. Bueso also is barred from contact with anyone under the age of 18 if he makes bail. With 2 sisters, Eric needs ‘guy time’ MATT HARPER SPECIAL TO THE DAILY RECORD

Eric shares a small apartment with his mother and two sisters. He would love the opportunity to meet and make friends with other boys, and two weeks at camp would give him just that opportunity. Eleven-year-old Eric loves his family, but being surrounded by girls all the time can be a bit overwhelming. Especially at his age, he would really like to have friends to play sports with, talk to and just hang with and be boys. Eric does well in school and enjoys most subjects, especially history and science. He also enjoys playing outside, although there’s little opportunity for that near his home. Eric’s dad has never been involved in his life, and he wonders if he See ERIC, Page 6A
