LHAT’s Awards Program inspires excellence by recognizing theatres and individuals for their significant accomplishments or distinguished service.

The Outstanding Historic Theatre Award recognizes a theatre that demonstrates excellence through its community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure. An award-winning theatre will have demonstrated excellence through significant achievement, the impact of its services and breadth of populations served, and the length of time and/or intensity of its activities.

Each year, one theatre and one individual are honored by LHAT at its annual conference. Former winners include the Fabulous Fox in Atlanta, New York City Center and Playhouse Square in Cleveland.

JAMES M. PORFIDO ATTORNEY AT LAW, LLC Dedication and Diligence

James M. Porfido is a Certified Criminal Attorney who has devoted the last two decades of his career to criminal defense and representing those faced with serious criminal charges including, but not limited to, homicides, sexual assaults, drug-related charges, domestic violence, burglary, juvenile crimes and driving offenses, such as driving while intoxicated.

Porfido, who was previously a Chief Assistant Prosecutor in Morris County, says seeing the case from both sides of the table distinguishes him from peers. “Knowing the State’s case and evidence that will be used against my clients is critical to providing the est denfese,” he says.

Porfido has been named to the Super Lawyers list for the ninth consecutive year in the area of criminal law. Outside the courtroom, Porfido continues to be involved with multiple charitable organizations and nonprofits in the communities he serves.

A welcome from our President It is our delight to be able to bring the world’s greatest entertainers so close to home! This year is no exception. The 2016-2017 season is a mix of returning favorites and exciting new events. By the time this season concludes, over 200 events will have been held on our stage, from world renowned performers such as Tony Bennett and Kristin Chenoweth, to touring Broadway shows like Once and Annie, to New Jerseybased organizations including New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, to the hundreds of children who participate in our afterschool performing arts program.

I was thrilled to travel to Chicago recently to receive the League of Historic American Theatre’s 2016 Outstanding Historic Theatre award. It was an honor for me to accept this national award on behalf of our entire community. For nearly 80 years, MPAC has been instrumental in stimulating Morristown’s economy, building our downtown and nurturing creativity through the arts and entertainment. As a non-profit performing arts venue, we simply would not be here today without the extraordinary commitment from our community members. We sincerely appreciate your patronage.

Looking ahead, we are pleased to present even more community-based initiatives this year, which started over the summer with our free summer movie series and lunchtime concert series Music Beyond Borders, and continues with our pre-show local emerging artist performances on the plaza.

Our education and outreach efforts remain central to our mission. This past year, over 40,000 children were touched by MPAC events, many exposed to the arts for the first time; including students who participated in our “PAS on the Road” program in distressed school districts such as Paterson. We continue to partner with local school districts, daycare centers, hospitals and social service organizations to ensure the arts are accessible to all children and adults in our neighborhoods.

This year we begin an exciting journey with The Miracle Project, an expressive arts program for individuals with autism and other disabilities. This is one of the most anticipated initiatives we will launch this season as we continue to strive to make performing arts experiences welcoming to all individuals including those with special needs. Our Education Department will be working with The Miracle Project to undergo training to better serve these children and engage them in theatre arts.

We continue to make strides to improve parking options and customer service. Everyone at MPAC is dedicated to serving our community and creating a welcoming atmosphere at which you, your family and friends can come enjoy world class entertainment. I always enjoy show nights because you can see just how much of a buzz an event at MPAC creates. The sidewalks are full of people and the restaurants are teeming with guests – it brings an energy to town that only the anticipation of seeing a live act can deliver.

Over the years, we have continuously worked to improve our building – preserving its historical integrity while adding the amenities that today’s audiences require. We thank you for your continued support over the years to help make these improvements possible.

As a non-profit organization, ticket sales do not cover the complete costs of all of our programs. MPAC presents a number of education and outreach initiatives in the community, and our fundraising efforts help to cover the costs of these programs.

We are committed to making the arts available to people of all means, whether it is a concert in our building, an afternoon theatre class in a disadvantaged community or a free concert at the Morristown Green. Dodge Foundation, F.M. Kirby Foundation and numerous other foundations, corporations and individuals.

Mayo Performing Arts Center has an impact on Morristown and the surrounding communities that goes far beyond the world-class entertainment that takes place on our stage. From outreach programs at Neighborhood House and Children on the Green, to free events such as Music Beyond Borders, to education programs that take place in distressed communities such as Paterson and at the Theatre, MPAC enthusiastically continues to be an arts leader, a trusted community partner and an essential gathering place.

Highlights from the past season include: Concerts • We had over 200 events on our stage, including headliners, emerging artists, school events and more.

• Over 200,000 people were served by MPAC programs, including ticketed events, outreach activities and education programs.

• Over 60 performances sold out. Memorable performances included Kristin Chenoweth, Sarah McLachlan, Jackson Browne, Mamma Mia!, Bob Newhart and Criss Angel.

• The Nutcracker drew over 12,000 people into Morristown across 14 performances during the holiday season.

• MPAC drew audiences from all 21 NJ counties, as well as New York, Pennsylvania and other surrounding states.

• Our economic impact on the region was over $15 million. (Americans for the Arts Economic Prosperity Calculator) • MPAC ranked as the 48th most attended mid-sized PAC in the world (Pollstar mid-year 2016 rankings); and a top 20 tourist location in the state (NJ Biz), based on attendance.

Community Outreach • In partnership with Morris Arts, the free Music Beyond Borders program returned to the Morristown Green with four free performances, with an attendance of over 2,000.

• Participated in creative placemaking by launching a “Performers on the Plaza” and “Emerging Artists” series to provide a showcase for new performers.

• MPAC continued to offer the Theatre at low cost to non-profit partners such as New Jersey Ballet, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Morristown Festival of Books, First Night Morris County and Morris Education Foundation’s Morristown on Stage.

• Over 200 New Jersey-based visual artists had their works displayed in our two galleries

Community • Launched a free family movie series with three events this summer (with fall events to be announced soon) • With the support of BASF, presented two free Earth Day lectures for the fourth year in a row for students as well as the community.

• Donated hundreds of tickets to area organizations, schools and non-profits for their fundraising efforts.

• Donated approximately 1,600 tickets to area non-profits to provide arts experiences that their constituents may not have otherwise been able to afford.

• Donated approximately $39,000 in space and equipment rentals to community organizations who rent MPAC. • Have over 150 local residents who serve as volunteers and ambassadors.

• Retained title of Major Presenting Organization by New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

• Named Outstanding Historic Theatre 2016 by League of Historical American Theatres.

Education • Over 670 students participated in Performing Arts School programs.

• The Education Department’s Spring Musical Mary Poppins, with a cast of over 45, was performed to over 4,500 people over four performances, including two sold out performances.

• Six MPAC students were among 40 from around the nation invited to participate in “Broadway at The White House,” hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. The event featured master classes with Broadway luminaries and the day concluded with a taping of a TV special that aired on TLC network in which several MPAC students were featured.

• MPAC’s “PAS on the Road” programs brought the arts to children in the Paterson School District as well as Morristown’s Neighborhood House and Children on the Green.

• The Performing Arts Company performed at over 30 local fundraising events.

• Over 60 students were honored as Music Students of the Month.

• Over $5,600 was provided in PAS scholarships to local students in need.

• MPAC served as Region 4 host to the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition.

Johnny Mathis: The 60th Anniversary Concert Tour “There are a number of good singers, a smaller handful of truly great singers, and then there’s Johnny Mathis.”

- Letter from Barbra Streisand The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation of music from his father who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven”.

At age eight, his father purchased an old upright piano for $25. When he brought it home, it wouldn't fit through the front door.

So that evening, Johnny stayed up all night to watch his father dismantle the piano, get it into the small living room of their basement apartment and then reassemble it. Clem Mathis, who worked briefly as a musician back in Texas playing the piano and singing on stage, would continue to teach his son many songs and routines. Johnny had proven to be the most eager of the children to learn all about music. He sang in the church choir, school functions, community events, for visitors in their home as well as amateur shows in the San Francisco area.

He was also a successful track & field athlete, and was offered a chance to compete in the Olympic Trials. In the same week Columbia Records called, so he choose to go to New York to record his first album in March of 1956.

Best-known for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are," "It's Not For Me To Say," and "Misty”, Johnny has recorded more than 80 albums, 6 Christmas albums, and has sold millions of records worldwide. During his extensive career he has had 3 songs inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, achieved 50 Hits on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart, and ranks as the all-time #6 album artist in the history of Billboard’s pop album charts. He has received 5 Grammy Nominations, and in 2003 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In addition to all this Johnny & his music have appeared in numerous films & TV shows, including The Tonight Show, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Family Ties, and Mad Men. He continues to be Columbia Records

longest signed recording artist.

In spite of a very busy tour schedule & many charity events, Johnny still finds time to enjoy a little free time. He was an avid tennis player until the late 1960s, when a good friend turned him on to his now life-long love of golf. He plays golf almost every day when he's not traveling and has also sung at many golf banquets such as the Ryder Cup. 2016 marks his 60th anniversary as a recording artist, so what’s next for Johnny? “I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life. I just have to pace myself.”

It was also where Brad became a huge fan of Johnny Mathis.

He is a past winner of the Las Vegas Comedy Festival and has headlined comedy clubs from Anchorage to Miami, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.

Brad has also been seen in concert with Joan Rivers, The Smothers Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Glen Campbell but will quickly acknowledge that working with Johnny Mathis is the absolute highlight of his 29-year comedy career. "First of all, I've always been a big fan, he's a legend and at the end of the night we come out together and take a bow. That moment is always surreal to me. The Robert Cray Band Open ears and an open mind are the essence of singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Cray’s approach to writing, recording and playing music. He has created a sound that rises from American roots and arrives today both fresh and familiar. In just over 40 years Cray and his band have recorded 20 studio releases, 15 of which have been on the Billboard charts, and played bars, concert halls, festivals and arenas around the world.

There are five Grammys with Cray’s name on them, and he has a suitcase full of W.C. Handy blues awards. Four years ago Cray was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

On August 28 the Mascot Label Group will celebrate the vibrancy of the Cray Band’s rocking rootsy blues, soul-filled ballads and timeless R&B with the release of 4 Nights of 40 Years Live. Through clips of concerts from the 80s and four recent shows, the evolution from the Cray Band unfolds. Comments by Cray and band members add depth. And interviews with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy put the band in perspective. The 3- piece set will be available in a variety of formats – 2 LPs + Mp3, 2 CDs + DVD, Blu-Ray + 2 CDs and digitally.

Growing up in the Northwest, Robert Cray listened to the gospel of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, Bobby Bland’s soul, Jimi Hendrix’s rock guitar and the Beatles pop sounds. He would bring all of the influences into play throughout his career, but his teenage band was captivated by Southern Soul and the blues. “In the early days of the band we were getting back into O.V. Wright and paying attention to my favorite blues players; Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Albert King and especially Albert Collins,” Cray says.

The Texas-born blues guitarist known as Master of the Telecaster, Albert Collins, sealed the deal on the Cray Band’s early direction.

The musical highlight of Cray’s senior year was his class voting to bring Collins in to play a graduation party.

The glow of a career in music began when Cray was a teen, and in 1974 it burst into flames as the Robert Cray Band came together in Eugene, Oregon. How strong was the fire? “Richard and I didn’t own a vehicle, and we were staying with his girlfriend in Eugene. We hitched a ride to Salem, where

our drummer Tom Murphy was going to school, to rehearse,” Cray recalls.

With the group’s 1980 debut release, Who’s Been Talkin’, word about the Cray Band began to spread across the Northwest and down in to California. Playing packed bars and roadhouses the Cray Band was thrilling.

Yes, fans could hear an Albert Collins guitar riff and a Howlin’ Wolf song but the sound was present. Blues and soul fans showed up religiously, but those steamy raucous sets also drew crowds whose tastes in music ranged from rock to funk and jazz.

Also among the Cray Band admirers were other musicians. John Lee Hooker put his appreciation into action. “The first time we played with Hooker was in Montana. We were opening the set and he was playing solo,” Cray recalls. “We’d never met him before but he just walked on stage and started playing with us. We dug the hell out of the guy, and after that we were friends.”

The Cray Band’s next two releases – Bad Influence and False Accusations – charted, taking the four-piece’s sound across the airways and abroad. The group was on a roll, but the players slept on couches. “We were just road rats,” Cray says with a chuckle. “We’d take a break for two weeks to record, then go back out. We didn’t have a house, a home, any of those responsibilities.” On one of those breaks Cray went into the studio with Collins and another great Texas guitarist and singer, Johnny Clyde Copeland, to record Showdown!, a CD that has become essential to any 80s electric blues collection.

It was the sounds of the blues and soul that first drew attention from artists in the rock arena. In an interview on the DVD included in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live, Eric Clapton gives his initial response to Robert Cray saying, “As a blues fan, we’re saved.” The Cray Band’s beginnings did bring the sounds of its mentors into the mainstream, even taking the music of John Lee Hooker, Etta James and Albert Collins to a larger, younger

audience. But no one knew how broad the band’s audience would be until the Cray Band opened the ears of rock radio programmers.

With the 1986 release of Strong Persuader the Cray Band’s tunes were put in heavy rotation on mega rock stations across the nation. The first hit, “Smoking Gun,” was followed by “I Guess I Showed Her” and “Right Next Door (Because of Me).” The Cray Band’s next two releases, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Midnight Stroll, brought more radio listeners to record stores, increasing sales of the group’s CDs. Following the path of fame taken by bluesbased rockers like Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cray became a sensation, leading his band in concerts at large arena and rock festival. He was the first African American artist since Jimi Hendrix to rise to such fame in rock music. Was there a change in the band’s direction or had the blues arrived again into the mainstream after more than three decades of being forgotten by radio? “We were doing blues and Rand B from the first,” Crays says. “That’s just part of what we do. If you’re writing a tune it’s only natural to grab something from someplace else.

You’re gonna put in some soul changes and some jazz, something you’ve been listening to. With what we do there’s a whole lot of room to move.”

Clapton’s admiration for Cray led to a writing collaboration on the hit “Old Love,” which featured Cray on guitar. A call came from Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richard who asked him to be in the film he and Steve Jordan were producing about the rock guitarist Chuck Berry, “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Concert footage in the film features Richards, Jordan, Clapton, Julian Lennon, Linda Ronstadt and Etta James. Cray performs “Brown Eyed Handsome Man” with Berry.

Dressed in a baby blue tuxedo jacket, the young guitarist is the epitome of the tune’s title. Cray also performed on the Tina Turner TV special “Break Every Rule.”

During the 90s the Cray Band was featured in concert with artists like Clapton, the Stones, John Lee Hooker, BB King and Bonnie Raitt, who on the DVD declares the band leader is “an original; he’s passionate, he’s a bad ass and puts on one of the best shows you’ll ever see.”

Amidst these accolades, soaring record sales and a packed touring schedule the Cray Band recorded six CDs in the 90s. Cray produced

Shame + A Sin, which referenced his blues roots, in 1993. It was followed by two more self-produced recordings, Some Rainy Morning and Sweet Potato Pie. Recorded in Memphis and featuring the famed Memphis Horns Sweet Potato Pie was the Cray Band’s most soulful album to date. The next recording Take Off Your Shoes delved even deeper into Memphis sounds of the 60s.

“That was definitely a soul record,” Cray says.

“I’d already been writing songs, Jim (Pugh, who was keyboards with the Cray Band from 1989 to 2014) was writing songs, leaning toward soul. Steve (Jordan, producer) heard them and put the icing on the cake.” Jordan, who subsequently produced the Cray Band’s In My Soul, Shoulda Been Home and the first CD in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live, also brought the personification of Memphis soul to the recording session, Willie Mitchell, to help with arrangements for the Memphis Horns.

Mitchell discovered and first recorded Al Green along with other Southern Soul singers like Ann Peebles, O.V. Wright and Syl Johnson for the famed Memphis label Hi Records.

When he arrived at the Cray recording session, he brought not only the Memphis presence but also a present. “Willie came over – he was wearing a gold jacket – and gave me this song, ‘Love Gone to Waste,’” Cray says. “Then we put some final touches on the CD at his studio in Memphis. It was a great opportunity to see Willie in the studio.”

Both on Take Your Shoes Off and 4 Nights of 40 Years Live, “Love Gone to Waste” showcases Robert Cray’s natural ease with soul ballads.

He is intense but smooth in telling the story of love gone bad. Then in a falsetto voice he soars through the sadness into the inevitable pain. It is a song that Cray owns because no other singer has dared try to do it justice. Take Your Shoes Off won a Grammy in 2000.

In the next decade the Cray Band recorded seven CDs, three of them live, and two – Twenty and This Time – were nominated for Grammys. The group’s most recent recordings, Nothing But Love and In My Soul put the band back on the Billboard Charts.

The multimedia 4 Nights of 40 Years Live is a testament to the band’s longevity and vitality. The 80s concert footage is exuberant and shows the charisma of Young Bob (a reference in song that Cray makes to himself in homage to Muddy Waters calling himself Young Muddy) as a guitarist, vocalist and band leader. The live performances at

recent concerts capture seasoned musicians bringing a vivid, illustrative past into the moment. Cray’s Stratocaster solos sing, cry and take on the funk. His voice has grown richer and wiser yet remains sweet. it is extraordinary for musicians to thrive over four decades, and the Robert Cray Band is just that, an extraordinary story of success. On the DVD Texas blues and R&B artist Jimmie Vaughan sums up Robert Cray’s singularity and success simply when he says, “He’s got one foot in the future and one foot in the old stuff.”

Daniel Rodriguez: Harmony for Heroes... United We Stand Daniel Rodriguez, the Brooklyn born, nowretired NYPD officer, helped bring the country an uplifting spirit of promise and hope with his stirring rendition of “God Bless America” after the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Formal voice training began at a very early age, with Daniel’s first recital in Carnegie Hall at age 16. Singing has been his lifelong passion, however it didn’t always pay the bills. He worked at a series of jobs until joining the New York City Police Department at age 30, where he became known as “The Singing Policeman”.

September 11, 2001, Officer Daniel Rodriguez was driving to work when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Arriving at the site as a first-responder, he witnessed the

destruction of both towers, nearly losing his own life. At “Prayer for America” in Yankee Stadium, Daniel’s inspirational performance gave hope and strength to a grieving nation.

His music career had turned into a calling.

Retirement from the NYPD came in 2004.

Daniel’s philanthropic and patriotic efforts have been recognized with more than a dozen honors and awards, such as the USO Lifetime Achievement Award, the DAR Medal of Patriotism and others. Now Now known as "America's Beloved Tenor", he continues to uplift and inspire in performances for his chosen charities, and at concert halls around the world.

Gordon Lightfoot in Concert: The Legend Lives On Gordon Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums and has five Grammy nominations. His songs have been aired regularly for 50 years, earning him Radio Singles Chart Positions in North America achieved by few others.

Lightfoot's radio hits in the USA have earned Five #1s, Five Top 10s and Thirteen Top 40 hits. In Canada he has earned Sixteen #1s, Eighteen Top 10s and Twenty One Top 40 hits.

Aside from his success in writing, singing and performing his own songs, Lightfoot has found fortune in having his songs recorded and performed by other great artists including: Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., Marty Robbins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Judy Collins, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, Sarah McLachlan, Barbra Streisand, Peter Paul & Mary, Harry Belafonte, Jane’s Addiction, Richie Havens, Glen Campbell, Toby Keith and George Hamilton IV. He has also won 17 Juno Awards - Canada's equivalent to the Grammy Awards. Gordon is a member of Canada's Walk of Fame and The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2007, Canada Post honored him by issuing an official Gordon Lightfoot postage stamp. Lightfoot is also in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Gordon Lightfoot is an indelible part of the Canadian national spirit and regarded as perhaps the most prolific and greatest Canadian singer-songwriter of all time.

A Don Rickles and Regis Philbin Laughfest: Stories, Film Clips and Fun

DON RICKLES Don Rickles is one of comedy’s most famous funnymen. For over 55 years he has appeared in top showrooms and concert halls throughout the U.S. and internationally.

He is regarded among the world's top entertainers.

Rickles was born in New York City, May 8, 1926. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he studied and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Unable to get a significant amount of acting work, Rickles began doing stand-up comedy. He became known as an “insult” comedian as he would respond to his hecklers. When he began his career in the early 1950’s, he started calling ill-mannered members of the audience “hockey puck,” a term associated with Rickles to this day.

Early in his career and still a relative “unknown,” while working at “Murray Franklin’s” nightclub in Miami Beach, Rickles spotted Frank Sinatra in the audience and said to him, “I just saw your movie, The Pride and the Passion , and I want to tell you, the cannon was great.” He added, “Make yourself at home Frank. Hit somebody.” Sinatra, whose pet name for Rickles was “bullet-head,” enjoyed Don so much that he returned to see him when Rickles was performing at the Slate Brothers nightclub in Los Angeles and encouraged other celebrities to see his act.

Rickles soon became the “in” comic among the Hollywood stars, who flocked to see him to become the target of his insults. Sinatra’s continuing support helped Rickles become a popular performer in Las Vegas, where he first started in 1959 and has been a headliner ever since.

Rickles earned the nicknames “The Merchant of Venom” and “Mr. Warmth” (coined affectionately by Johnny Carson) for his style of humor in which he pokes fun at people of all ethnicities and walks of life. When he is introduced to an audience or on a TV talk show, Spanish matador music, “La Virgen de la Macarena,” will usually be played subtly foreshadowing that someone is about to be metaphorically gored. Rickles has said, “I always pictured myself facing the audience as the matador.”

Rickels has been featured in dozens of TV

shows, including Get Smart, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, The Munsters, Gilligan’s Island, The Andy Griffith Show and I Dream of Jeannie. He is also well-known for his appearances on The Dean Martin Show and celebrity roasts.

Movie credits include Run Silent, Run Deep, The Great Race, Kelly's Heroes, Casino, and as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story films.

As his career progressed, Rickles often appeared on television talk shows. Rickles was a frequent guest and guest host on The Tonight Show, appearing over 100 times during Carson’s tenure. To this day, Rickles continues to be a much sought after guest on the talk show circuit frequently appearing with such hosts as David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson, In 1976, he starred in C.P.O Sharkey.

Although not actually part of the show, many remember the night Johnny Carson, feigning anger and followed by a Tonight Show camera, interrupted the Sharkey taping after finding out that, on The Tonight Show the night before, while Bob Newhart sat in for Carson, Rickles had broken Johnny’s treasured cigarette box. The incident has often been replayed in Tonight Show retrospectives and is considered a highlight of the 1970’s era of the show.

Another memorable TV appearance came in 1985. When Frank Sinatra was asked to perform at Ronald Reagan’s Second Inaugural Ball, he stipulated that he would not do so unless Don Rickles was allowed to perform with him. Rickles did perform at the televised inaugural gala, where he "zinged" the President, the Vice President and other of the nation's dignitaries gathered for the occasion. Rickles considers this performance the highlight of his career.

In the spring of 2012 at the Comedy Awards in New York City, Rickles was honored to become the second recipient of the prestigious “Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence.”

Rickles continues to be very active on the stand-up comedy scene. He has no plans to retire. In a recent interview he said, “I’m in good health. I’m working better than I ever have. The audiences are great. Why should

I retire? I’m like a fighter. The bell rings and you come out and fight. My energy comes alive. And, I still enjoy it.”

Rickles’ style is never mean-spirited and it’s all just part of the act. In reality, most know him to be quite genial and pleasant. It has been said that being “insulted” by Rickles is like “wearing a badge of honor.” He’s known for saying the word “anyway” following most of his comedic insults. This is widely regarded as one of Rickles’ classic comedic tactics that contribute to his impeccable sense of timing.

Rickles considers comedian Bob Newhart to be his best friend. Rickles, Newhart and their wives often vacation together.

Rickles has been married for more than 45 years to his wife Barbara. The couple had two children; a daughter Mindy, and a son, producer Larry Rickles, who passed away in December 2011 at the age of 41. According to Rickles’ memoir, his grandchildren, Ethan and Harrison Mann, are much more impressed by his role as “Mr. Potato Head” than by any of his other achievements.

REGIS PHILBIN Since Regis Philbin first stepped in front of the camera more than 40 years ago, he has ambitiously tackled talk shows, game shows, the literary world and even the fashion industry. In May 2001, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored him with a Daytime Emmy as Outstanding Game Show Host for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” and another Emmy as Outstanding Talk Show Host for his syndicated program, “Live with Regis.” He and co-host Kelly Ripa received the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Special for hosting the 2005 “Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade.”

In 2006, he broke his own existing Guinness World Record? for Most Hours on Camera, setting a new mark of 15,662 hours accumulated over his illustrious career – a career that was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the 2008 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Kenny Rogers: The Gambler's Last Deal Final World Tour With Special Guest Linda Davis

KENNY ROGERS GRAMMY Award-winning country superstar and music icon Kenny Rogers has enjoyed great success during his storied career of nearly six decades.

The enduring Country Music Hall of Fame member and pop superstar has endeared music lovers around the globe with his amazing songs, heartfelt performances, distinctive voice, gift for storytelling and universal appeal, and in 2016, Rogers is embarking on what will be his final world tour with a show that will celebrate his musical legacy: The Gambler’s Last Deal.

Rogers has been the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Entertainment Buyers Association, the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music, and the Horatio Alger Award, given to those who have distinguished themselves despite humble beginnings.

Rogers earned a GRAMMY Award nomination and CMA Award nomination in 2014, along with longtime friend and collaborator Dolly Parton, for their new duet, “You Can’t Make

Old Friends,” the title track of Rogers’ current acclaimed 32nd studio album released by Warner Bros. in 2013. “You Can’t Make Old Friends” was also included on the American Songwriter Top 50 Songs of 2014 list. The magical Kenny & Dolly reunion was only the third time in the studio together since their “Real Love" hit in 1985.

Rogers’ music has always crossed boundaries — his 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary Top 10’s is sixth-best all-time, and fourth-best among men, trailing only Elton John, Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley. Rogers was the only male artist to notch Billboard AC Top 10s in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s (only Barbra Streisand also managed that feat in those decades). Rogers has sent the most country No. 1’s to the top spot on AC (five of his eight AC No. 1’s were also country No. 1’s) and no He is still making monumental crossover appearances at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals up to this day.

In 2013, Rogers gave his first performance at the largest outdoor arts spectacle, the Glastonbury Festival, playing to over 130,000 enthusiastic fans, and at Morocco’s world music, Festival Timitar, with upwards of 100,000 people in attendance. In 2012, the country legend was welcomed with open arms at popular U.S. festival Bonnaroo, where Rogers performed his own set with surprise special guest Lionel Richie and later joined Phish on-stage as a surprise guest himself for a rousing version of “The Gambler.”

Houston-born Rogers formed his first band while in high school in 1956—a doo-wop group called the Scholars—and has never quit making music. He charted as a solo artist in the late ’50s with “That Crazy Feeling” and performed the song on American Bandstand, played stand-up bass in the jazz group the Bobby Doyle Three (appearing on their album released by Columbia Records), and in 1966 became a member of the popular folk group, The New Christy Minstrels.

The spotlight started focusing on Rogers when his group, the First Edition, scored their first hit, “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).” Pop and country chart success followed for the band with “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town” (when the group officially became

known as Kenny Rogers and the First Edition). A string of hits, including “Reuben James,” “Something’s Burning” and “Tell It All Brother,” and a TV variety show called Rollin’ continued to make the popular group relevant. But it was Rogers’ breakthrough, GRAMMY-winning performance of “Lucille” as a solo artist in 1977 that propelled him to superstardom, launching one of the most prosperous careers in the history of music.

Certified gold, “Lucille” was named Song of the Year and Single of the Year by the Academy of Country Music and also earned Single of the Year honors from the Country Music Association.

“Daytime Friends,” “Sweet Music Man,” and “Love Or Something Like It” continued Rogers’ run of success. Then came his smash hit, “The Gambler,” a story song so vivid it not only delighted country and pop fans, it also became a TV movie, starring Rogers himself in the title role as Brady Hawkes. The movie spawned four follow-ups, making it the longest running miniseries franchise on television. The five Gambler mini-series have attracted over 100 million viewers nationwide and launched a second career for Rogers as an actor on television and movies, including another TV movie based on one of his #1 hit songs, “Coward of the County.” While drawing new listeners and fans to country music in the 1980s, he came to embody the role of the sensitive male, singing such romantic hits as “Through The Years,” “She Believes In Me,” “You Decorated My Life,” and “Lady,” the biggest song of his career.

In 1985, Kenny participated in the historical USA For Africa recording of “We Are The World,” the multi-celebrity performance which raised millions of dollars for famine relief in Africa. A year later, he co-chaired the audacious “Hands Across America” fundraiser for America’s hungry.

Into the late ’80s and ’90s, in addition to worldwide tours, recording new music and forming his own record label and management company, Rogers established himself as a well-respected photographer, publishing several books. He was even invited to the White House to shoot a portrait of First Lady Hillary Clinton. He also authored several short stories, and appeared offBroadway in his Christmas musical, The Toy Shoppe, which he subsequently toured.

In 1999, Rogers returned to the charts in a big

way on his own record label, Dreamcatcher, with the hit and Number One video, “The Greatest,” and when the follow-up, “Buy Me a Rose,” hit Number One in 2000, Rogers, at age 61, became the oldest artist in chart history to have a Number One solo record on the country chart, proving his talent was just as vibrant and meaningful as it was when he first started out.

Rogers has continued his amazing run into the 21st century with a Country Music Hall of Fame induction, a CMA Lifetime Achievement Award, two GRAMMY Award nominations (“Calling Me” with Don Henley and “You Can’t Make Old Friends” with Dolly Parton), a CMA Award nomination (“You Can’t Make Old Friends” with Dolly Parton), a Gold-certified record (21 Number Ones), and three critically acclaimed albums (Water and Bridges, The Love of God, and You Can’t Make Old Friends), considered by Rogers to be some of the very best work of his entire career.

Never one to rest on his laurels, in this current decade, Rogers became a New York Times best- selling author. His autobiography, Luck or Something Like It – A Memoir, became a New York Times Best Seller shortly after its 2012 release. A producer of several books of photography, Rogers received an Honorary Masters of Photography from the Professional Photographers of America in 2014.

Shortly following Rogers’ 2013 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a careerspanning exhibit entitled Kenny Rogers: Through The Years opened in 2014 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. The exhibit closed in June of 2015.

Rogers released his first Christmas studio album in 17 years — Once Again It’s Christmas — on September 25, 2015. The record includes guest appearances by Alison Krauss, Jennifer Nettles, Home Free, Jim Brickman, and Winfield’s Locket. On the Cracker Barrel exclusive edition of the recording, Rogers is joined by The Time Jumpers (including Vince Gill) for one song.

Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, Rogers, who was once voted the “Favorite Singer of All-Time” in a joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People, still loves touring and recording new music. Even so, Rogers came to a conclusion that family is more important than touring at this stage

in his career, once he’s played the final date of his last world tour. “I’ve been so lucky to have enjoyed such a long career and to have such amazing support from my fans and all who have helped me along the way, but there comes a time when I need to focus on spending time with my family. My life is about my wife and my 11-year-old twin boys right now. There are a lot of things I want to do together with them to create some special memories. I don’t have a bucket list of my own…I have a bucket list of things I want to do with them.”

LINDA DAVIS Labeled a ‘song stylist’, Davis’ unique ability to interpret a song has made her one of Nashville's favorite vocalists. As her talents began to catch the attention of label executives, she landed her first record deal with CBS/ Epic Records. Davis quickly gained

a legion of friends and fans in the music industry, one being superstar Reba McEntire.

Their mutual respect led them into the studio together where they recorded a duet entitled Does He Love You that went on to become a #1 hit and earn both artists several awards including a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.

Through the years, Davis has played to soldout crowds with the likes of Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire and Kenny Rogers just to name a few. In 2009, Linda was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.

Ben Folds And A Piano Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He’s spent over a decade sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras – from Sydney, Australia to the Kennedy Center, performing his pop hits and his critically acclaimed concerto for Piano and Orchestra.

For five seasons he was a judge on the popular NBC series “The Sing Off,” which catapulted the art of a cappella into the national spotlight, and helped launch the careers of numerous a cappella groups.

Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, to Weird Al and William Shatner.

His most recent album is a blend of pop and classical original works, in part recorded

with the revered classical sextet yMusic that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

Beginning this Fall, Folds will be back to pound pianos again with cross country solo touring reminiscent of his earliest solo tours, where he defied skeptics by delivering a high energy rock performance using the intimacy of just a piano.

In addition to his self-described love of performing and making music “for humans,” Folds is also an avid photographer, and is a member of the distinguished Sony Artisans of Imagery.

Folds is also an advocate for music education and music therapy as a member of Artist Committee of the Americans For The Arts, and he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Nashville Symphony.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers In 1973, a barely-out-of-his-teens Wilmington guitarist piled his gear into the drummer’s Chevy van to play their very first gig at a University of Delaware dorm. More than 4 decades, over 8,000 live shows, and some 15 million albums sold worldwide later, that same maverick guitar-slinger is still making electrifying music, still thrilling audiences, and still the most bad-to-thebone performer in rock.

It’s 2016, and George Thorogood & The Destroyers are Badder Than Ever.

For George and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – their new Badder Than Ever Tour is indestructible proof that staying true to yourself and the music can still mean something. And with a catalog of classics that includes “Who Do You Love”, “I Drink Alone”, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”, “Move It On Over”, “Bad To The Bone” and more, being able to share it with audiences is what will always matter.

“When I was 16, I was going to school and playing Little League but nothing felt comfortable to me,” George says. “The first moment I picked up the guitar, it felt so right that it almost scared me. The fact that I couldn’t sing, play or write a song didn’t matter. I’d learn to do all that soon enough.

But by having a knack for this thing and feeling relaxed doing it, I knew I was halfway home. I love to perform live, and I’m lucky to be able to do it on a level that our music and reputation have taken us to. To this day, I consider my job description to be ‘live rock performer’.”

Surprisingly, Thorogood began his career as a solo acoustic act. “I was more of a Robert Johnson/Elmore James type country-blues player,” he explains. “I wasn’t very good at it, but I’d gotten enough feedback from artists like Brownie McGhee and Willie Dixon who thought I had something going. But I knew I needed more.” George called high-school friend and drummer Jeff Simon, and with the addition of a bass player – as well as Jeff’s van – the electric trio soon graduated from basement rehearsals to local gigs. “We knew there was still time for one supercharged boogie-blues combo to make it. We relocated to Boston, and toured New England and the

Delaware Valley non-stop. Crowds loved us.

The acts we were opening for, like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, loved us. We were playing great, but still couldn’t get a record deal. Back then, a band without a record deal was like an actor without a SAG card. We couldn’t earn more than $200 a night.”

As Big Bill Broonzy said, the blues is a natural fact. If you don’t live it, you don’t have it. “1974 to 1977 was rough,” George remembers.

“Everything seemed stacked against us. We were always getting ripped off, our gear got stolen, our rent was doubled and we were evicted from our band house.” By this time, Bill Blough had joined The Destroyers on bass and the band signed a deal with the Cambridge-based independent bluegrass label Rounder Records. “But the album sat on the shelf for 18 months. And the day it was finally released,” George says with a laugh, “was the day Elvis died.”

Nevertheless, that self-titled and nowclassic debut would soon be certified Gold.

And for audiences and radio alike, the band instantly embodied – and continues to define – powerhouse rock with bar band roots, unchained attitude and a fierce love of its country, blues and R&B history. Over the course of sixteen studio albums (including six Gold and two Platinum discs), they would storm the charts by putting their own stamp on nuggets by Hank Williams, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and more, while simultaneously delivering hit GT originals that crackle with humor and swagger. “I’ve always balanced one against the other,” George explains, “and I follow my heart as far as what I can do. You don’t ask Woody Allen to make a western and you can’t expect Clint Eastwood to do Shakespeare. You find what you’re good at and stick to it. Let’s face it; ‘Get A Haircut’ isn’t a song for Carly Simon. It’s for Thorogood.” As for his signature certified classic “Bad To The Bone”, George knows the simple truth of his definitive badass anthem. “It’s the ultimate fantasy of the cool tough guy,” he says. “I wrote ‘Bad To The Bone’ to perform it live for the rest of my life.”

In fact, ask anyone who’s seen a GT&D performance – from that first show at Lane Hall, through legendary appearances on SNL and Live Aid, the opening slot on the Rolling

Stones historic ’81 tour, their own recordbreaking 50/50 tour, or any of their current 100+ shows per year – and it’s ferociously clear that the band’s reputation as worldwide road warriors remains untouchable. “When we play, whether it’s a great old theater, a shiny new casino, an outdoor festival, wherever, we have fun on stage. We give the fans a great show. Most of all, we’re making a living doing what we love and people love what we're doing.”

Ultimately, the 2016 Badder Than Ever tour is 50% celebration, 50% declaration and 100% Thorogood throwdown. But after 4-plus decades as one of the most consistent – and consistently unique – careers in rock, can

a guitar-slinger still at the top of his game choose a moment that brings it all home?

“Stan Musial was once asked, ‘What was the greatest day of your career?’ And Stan said ‘Every day when I walk onto the field is the greatest day.’ I feel the same way,” George says. “Every night when I walk out on that stage is the highlight of my career. I hit that first chord, the band kicks in, and we hear the audience respond. That’s the rush. Over 40 years into this, and every night that's still the only moment that matters.”

For George Thorogood & The Destroyers – and for rock & roll – it doesn’t get badder-tothe-bone than that.

An Evening with Graham Nash Legendary singer-songwriter GRAHAM NASH is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee-with Crosby, Stills, and Nash and with the Hollies. He was also inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame twice, as a solo artist and with CSN, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner.

Nash’s passionate voice continues to be heard in support of peace, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/ Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In 2011, Nash was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to the forefront with a concert to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting nonnuclear energy worldwide.

In September 2013, Nash released his longawaited autobiography Wild Tales, which delivers an engrossing, no-holds-barred look back at his remarkable career and the music that defined a generation. The book landed him on the New York Times Best Sellers list, and was released in paperback format in late 2014.

In recognition for his contributions as a

musician and philanthropist, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth.

While continually building his musical legacy, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist.

With his photography, Nash has drawn honors including the New York Institute of Technology’s Arts & Technology Medal and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and the Hollywood Film Festival’s inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber Award. His work is collected in the book Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash; he curated others’ work in the volume Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash (2009).

Nash’s work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. His company Nash Editions’ original IRIS 3047 digital printer and one of its first published works—Nash’s 1969 portrait of David Crosby— is now housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition of his revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts and digital printing world.

Or, rather, we think we do. The elastic self and work of a true artist is always changing; ideas are channeled, shape-shifting becomes necessary. Emily’s D+Evolution (pronounced “d plus evolution”) is where we meet Emily-both Esperanza’s middle name and the label for the spirit-muse that flows through this multi-dimensional, theatrical performance artwork wrapped in a brilliantly urgent, vivacious record. With 6 tracks co-produced

by Tony Visconti (David Bowie) and drawing, at times, from wellsprings as disparate as Cream to Shostakovich to St. Vincent, Emily’s D+Evolution is a kaleidoscopic project; raw,

honest, luminous.

"Whether you want to see it as devolution and evolution, and the place where they co-exist without one diminishing the other, or...barely having the tools that you need, but having to move forward, and having to keep moving," Spalding explained to NPR in a recent interview, the album conceptually addresses the always exciting, sometimes messy process of reconciling the aspects of our selves that are in conflict. Exploding with literal and proverbial electricity, this album’s complex but immediate compositions were committed to tape partially live, and partially in front of a control room packed full of 20 or more onlookers. The trio of Spalding (fretless electric bass and vocals), Matthew Stevens (electric guitar) and Justin Tyson and Karriem Riggins (splitting drum duties) often decided to use the first take--a testament to the project’s particular energy and Spalding’s virtuosity. Many of the compositions on Emily’s D+Evolution were, after all, incubated onstage during the rigorous live performance schedule that preceded it.

Armed with the entity of Emily flowing through her, Spalding’s visionary performance of the album is an experience to behold and an integral part of the project itself. Here, Spalding is, for the first time, incorporating stage design, movement and acting into her already vivid musical storytelling practice. She’s working with stage director and playwright Will Wiegler to manifest her concepts physically now that they’ve come to life aurally. Each track on the album, from the soaring ode to uninhibited self-expression “Good Lava” to the affecting, shimmery funk ballad “Unconditional Love”, Emily’s D+Evolution is rich, surprising and labyrinthian, yet classic and timeless, as if these songs have always existed out there in the ether. Turns out that Spalding just had to tune in to Emily to bring them here to Earth.

The Doobie Brothers Great songs are continually rediscovered by new generations of music lovers. For more than four decades, The Doobie Brothers have delivered some of the most timeless songs in America’s musical lexicon. On their new album Southbound, they revive those classic hits with a cadre of enthusiastic Doobie fans who also happen to be some of country music’s biggest stars.

“In music, there are all kinds of artists that make an impact in their genre,” says Blake Shelton. “In country music, we have Hank Williams and George Strait. In pop, there is Michael Jackson and others. Then there are artists that span all genres. That is what The Doobie Brothers are to me.”

Singer-­‐songwriter-­‐guitarist Pat Simmons says, “We have entered a territory that we never imagined for ourselves, as far as being a part of the cultural landscape. It’s kind of odd when you see your songs in television commercials and hear yourself as background music in a commercial business, but it’s cool. I hear B.B. King in the same places. We’re in good company.”

Putting a fresh spin on some of the most-­‐ beloved songs in American rock & roll, Southbound is the brainchild of musician/ producer David Huff. Far from being a tribute album, Southbound is a collaborative effort that brings together the top names in country music with current band members Tom Johnston, John McFee, and Patrick Simmons, as well as former Doobie Michael McDonald, who returns to the band for this project. “I’m humbled. I had no idea all these people were into the band,” Johnston says.

“Everybody was giving equally of themselves to do this, and it was a collaborative effort. I was blown away.”

“It was a lot of fun,” McDonald says, “because it allowed us to get in there with some of the Nashville players and work on the tracks together. I’ve always had great admiration for Nashville’s session players, and I’ve known many of those guys for years. It was just a really fun project all the way around for us.”

Huff says that the session musicians and guest artists approached the project with a definite reverence for the material. Pat Simmons confesses, “I don’t think I was sure of it. I wondered, ‘What would it sound

like? How do these songs even translate to country?’ And after we started doing it, I realized, ‘Wow, this really works!’ It’s like they’re almost exactly the same songs, but with the other performers and a little bit different instrumentation on the tracks, it really gave them all the right things to put it in that country bag without sounding corny.

It wasn’t such a far leap.”

Southbound was a labor of love and creative joy for those who participated. McDonald thinks that sense of camaraderie and fun will translate to the listener. “Hopefully, it has something that will ignite people’s imagination a little bit – the collaboration between all those different musicians from different backgrounds and the common thread being this music,” he says. “I’ve always felt that when records are a lot of fun to make it translates into something that people feel on the other end. If you’re listening to it, you go, ‘This is fun,’ and it was really fun to do.

That’s something that people will hear.”

Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, The Doobie Brothers have won four GRAMMY® Awards and sold more than 48 million records worldwide (including three multi-­ ‐platinum, seven platinum, and 14 gold albums). Their 1976 Best of the Doobies has sold more than 12 million copies, earning rare RIAA Diamond status. Their No. 1 gold-­‐ certified singles “Black Water” (1974) and “What a Fool Believes” (1979) lead a catalog of hits that includes “Jesus Is Just All Right,” “Rockin’ Down the Highway,” “Long Train Runnin’,” “China Grove,” “Take Me In Your Arms,” Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Minute by Minute,” “You Belong to Me,” and “The Doctor.” In all, The Doobies have tallied five Top 10 singles and 16 Top 40 hits.

“We’re basically an American band – we cover a lot of areas,” says Johnston. “We cover blues, R&B, country, bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll. It’s based on rhythms, rhythm structures, picking, and harmonies. That’s been the signature of the band.” He continues, “You take Pat, who comes from a folk/blues background, with a lot of picking and stuff like that; he was a big fan of Rev. Gary Davis and Dave Van Ronk. I come from a blues, soul, R&B, and rock ‘n’ roll background. Then you stick John McFee

into that mix. John came from a country background when he started out and was in the country band Southern Pacific. And he is a session musician – he’s played with everybody from Steve Miller to Van Morrison to Elvis Costello. If it’s got strings, he can play it.”

Simmons notes, “We didn’t really sit around and think, ‘Oh, we need this element or that element.’ The music has always been an honest representation of whatever we happen to be working on at the time. We had all been playing music for a long time before we put the band together, and our roots influences are what come out.

Those influences always overtake whatever conceptual ideas you might have. It’s always been that way with this band — you always return to who you really are.”

Formed in 1969 by Simmons, Johnston, founding drummer John Hartman, and bassist Dave Shogren, The Doobie Brothers made their mark with a run of punchy, melodic hits on Warner Bros. Records. They attained radio ubiquity in the late ‘70s, when the group’s expanded lineup was augmented

by Michael McDonald, whose soaring lead vocals pushed the band to new commercial and critical heights. The band took a five year respite before regrouping in 1987 for a series of gigs benefiting veterans’ groups and children’s charities (ultimately raising over $3 million).

Simmons says, “We have a hardcore fan base that has handed our music down through the years to their children and their children’s children. Repeatedly, people go to our concerts and come up to us and say, ‘My dad

turned me on to you guys years ago, and I’ve loved you guys all this time, and my kids are listening to you now.’”

“The songs that people all know-­ ‐-­ ‐be it ‘Listen to the Music’ or ‘Black Water’ or ‘China Grove’-­‐-­‐still getting played,” Johnston adds.

“Any song that stands the test of time for 40 years or is getting played around the country on a daily basis –to me is a testament to the quality of the tunes, and that they had something to say that resonated with people.

I’d like to say this band has been relevant: it’s been relevant musically, it’s been relevant lyrically, and we’ve always put out a high quality of music.”

The co-­ ‐founders of the Doobie Brothers sometimes struggle to define the characteristics that have led their band to become one of the country’s most enduring musical institutions. The fundamental appeal may be best expressed by Simmons: “In a certain sense, what this band has always had in common with everyone else is the word ‘hope,’” says Simmons. “We hoped we would make some good music, and we hoped there would be some acceptance, and we hoped that things would get better in the world. In that respect, we’re just the same: we’re still hopeful about the future. In my lifetime, there has always been struggle and challenge and some darkness, but with the sun shining through, and that’s what we all live for. You have to look towards the future and recognize that as long as there are thoughtful, intelligent people on the planet, there’s hope for the rest of us.”

Joe Nichols As far as where I’m at with my new music and my new label, Red Bow, this is more than a new chapter. It’s a new book. My new single “Sunny And 75” is getting as great a reception as anything I’ve ever done, and the album it comes from is something I might have hoped I could do at other points in my career, but have been held back from. And I’ll be the first to say that the holding back has mostly been me. What strikes me this time is how much freedom I’ve felt in this process, the depth I have in my relationships – personal and professional, it really is a family thing. And, to be honest, just how much fun I’m having. Freedom, family and fun ... there’s your sound bite.

The hard part of this journey, if that’s not too cliché a word for it, was leaving my last label, because the wheels in Nashville just turn really slow sometimes. And time turned out to be our enemy and our friend. The more distance I was able to get from the last few years of stops and starts, the better. But our enemy was losing a consistent presence with the fans and radio. That hurt, but it set up some anticipation for something new; it was also very healing and kind of humbled me a little bit.

I went into the studio to start making music with my own money. One of those sides, a song called “Yeah,” will probably be a single on this record. The other was a stone-cold country song called “Billy Graham’s Bible.” So, we walked into labels with something to play for them. Quite a few were interested, but the majors tend to have a lot of artists in line and wanted me to look at a late 2014 release.

I wanted to be in business with somebody who had the same sense of urgency about me as I do, and Broken Bow did. Being one of the flagship artists on their latest imprint, which is a joint venture with Sony Red, helped this all feel brand new.

The one thing about my approach to this record that I was almost militant about was that I wanted to find hit songs that might be a bit unexpected. Having a hit, writing or making good albums has never been a problem for me, it’s been that momentum you get from a consistent series of hits. That’s why I wanted to be rigorous about finding songs that cut through, even if they didn’t seem to fit the idea people have of what I

should sound like. I wanted to be able to say we’ve got six singles on this album. Or ten.

And that meant being open to songs and sounds a lot of folks wouldn’t have thought would work.

The interesting thing is that we’ve ended up with a very balanced record. There are lots of songs that feel like they’d sound great getting heavy airplay, and there are also some that I think people will say, “That’s a cool moment on this album.” Sometimes those coincide.

A lot of that has to do with my relationship with the label. People warned me that Benny Brown, the founder, is very involved in the A&R process. At first I didn’t know how that would go because I’ve been very hands-on with the music throughout my career. After working with Benny, I can say he’s very involved, but all in good ways.

When he finds something he’ll say, “I like this for you, what do you think? Would you try this for me, because we don’t know how it’s going to sound until you try it.” That’s a push in a healthy direction with the understanding that if it doesn’t turn out in the studio, we don’t have to show it to anyone.

That was comforting and allowed me to try things with nothing really to lose. It was freeing and very different from where I’ve been in the past with the A&R process. In some more jagged situations, I probably did become a bit of jerk about cutting what I wanted to cut. So Benny’s approach let me gracefully bow out of that kind of attitude. I was able to approach this album with a new heart for the music and a new set of ears. It’s worked out tremendously.

Several are songs I probably never would have found or thought were right for me if I had found them. Having Benny bring them to me and having that ability to try, to see what something sounds like, has been great.

My producers, Mickey Jack Cones and Derek George, have also helped me understand that whatever I do vocally, it’s going to bring it back to traditional no matter how far out there we get.

Just as the drive for hit singles led to a balance of material on the album, my voice and the ability to be edgy with song selection created a balance, too. In an organic way, it made for

a unique sound. You can have a rock-pop feel with the track, because the traditional vocals bring it back. There’s always going to be a traditional element in my music that I won’t change, and really just can’t change.

But I can reach beyond my comfort zone, too. Certainly in 2013, it would be foolish not to try.

I realize there are purists who could be let down by that mindset, and there have been times I have absolutely felt that I was letting people down by trying new things.

And, of course, that created massive fear in me that probably led to decisions that hurt my progress. So I’m glad that I now feel comfortable enough in my own skin to know what being true to myself really is. I am true to traditional country music and always will be. I have bled and sweat and cried country music my entire life. And broadening my approach won’t change that one bit. That’s the freedom – to be happy and successful and make music I’m proud of.

There are layers to my relationships and the people around me. There’s a depth there that I’ve never felt before, especially in a working environment. I care passionately and deeply about the music, as well as the people I’m working with. I care about the overall wellbeing and success of everybody. That is a wonderful feeling, and way more important than having hit records and looking good to the outside world. This is family.

I have been a Nashville guy for a long time and would move back there in a heartbeat,

but I also love Texas because it’s the place I want to raise my children. It’s just a great way of life here. When I’m home, there are no crowds, no industry events to go to, none of that. It’s just family, friends and a normal pace of life.

The new music is going over awesome on the road, especially “Sunny And 75.” The other new songs we play get an incredible reaction, too. As far as the crowds go, I’ve been almost two years without a single at radio and people are still showing up in awesome numbers. I’m impressed and incredibly grateful for country fans, because they are amazingly loyal.

I’m also thankful radio is welcoming me back with open arms. I love that I have true friends there who care about me beyond the music and career stuff, because I care about them in the same way. So I’m especially proud to give them music they can play in good conscience. It’s not just my friends hooking me up with airplay, it’s something deserving, and I hope to continue giving them that.

The biggest thing I feel is just that it’s a new day. I’m wiping the slate clean and starting something brand new. I love my old catalog of music – “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” “Brokenheartsville,” “The Impossible,” “Gimme That Girl” and the rest. But I’m starting the first chapter of that new book now. I’m pretty sure it’s got a happy ending, but I also hope there are a few surprises for people along the way.

DID YOU KNOW? MPAC was one of five performing arts programs from around the country to have been invited to send students to Broadway at the White House. Members of our Performing Arts Company --- all who have taken classes for several years at our Performing Arts School -- had the opportunity to take masterclasses from the likes of Matthew Morrison (Finding Neverland), Gloria Estefan (On Your Feet), Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked) and other prominent Broadway actors, directors and producers.

Several of our students were showcased in the TLC special, Broadway at the White House, which aired nationally on Thanksgiving.

Peter Frampton Raw: An Acoustic Tour Following another year of non-stop touring including select solo performances, dates with The Doobie Brothers and the return of Frampton’s Guitar Circus, Grammy Award winner Peter Frampton is back on the road— this time co-headlining with American rock legends Cheap Trick.

“I’ve always loved Cheap Trick and their sound. Great band, great people! We played one show together last year and had so much fun we decided to do a whole tour together,” Peter explains.

With over 5,000 performances spanning four decades and 20 million records sold worldwide, Cheap Trick is undoubtedly one of the most influential classic rock groups of the past 50 years. The band was formed in 1974 and while it has evolved throughout the years, Cheap Trick has continued to reach mainstream and critical success. Hits such as “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police,” and “Surrender” have cemented the group as one of America’s top rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time.

Peter Frampton remains one of the most

celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. At 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British band the Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others. His fifth solo album, the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive!, is one of the top-selling live records of all time.

Moreover, Frampton’s latest work, Hummingbird in a Box, which was inspired by the Cincinnati Ballet, is available via RED Distribution. Rolling Stone explains, “…Hummingbird is fresh-sounding, sophisticated stuff; Frampton plays and sings as well as ever and, to his credit, his continually looking forward—rather than backward, for there’s quite a story there to be sure—only solidifies his status as one of rock ‘n’ roll’s lifelong major players. Excellent stuff here.”

Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs Alan Cumming is an actor and activist beyond eclectic and according to the New York Times ‘a bawdy countercultural sprite’; Time Magazine named him one of the most fun people in show business; He plays political maverick Eli Gold on CBS’s The Good Wife, for which he received Golden Globe, Emmy, SAG and Satellite award nominations and earlier this year finished his Tony Award-winning role of the Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret. Alan’s diverse career has found him performing at venues around the globe including the Sydney Opera House; making back to back films with Stanley Kubrick and The Spice Girls; directing and starring in a musical condom commercial; creating voices of a Smurf, a goat and Hitler; entering upside down and suspended by his ankles in a Greek tragedy (in the National Theatre of Scotland's The Bacchae); and recording an

award-winning album of songs (plus a dance remix). Alan is also Host of PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery and appears opposite Lisa Kudrow in Showtime's Web Therapy. Alan has written for The NY Times, Newsweek, Harpers Bazaar, Out, Globe and Mail, and two books; Tommy’s Tale and his NY Times Best Selling memoir, Not My Father's Son. A tireless champion for LGBT civil rights and HIV/AIDS, Alan serves on the Board of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and works closely with amfAR, The Trevor Project and the Ali Forney Center to name but a few. In 2009, Alan was made an OBE in the Queen's Honors List and by his homeland, Scotland, for which he was a vocal supporter of the YES for independence campaign, he has been awarded the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards, as well as recently having his portrait unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
