elcome to the pages of Postscripts.

There is something especially meaningful about this issue, as we mark Mayfield’s 75th anniversary—a moment to pause, to look back with gratitude, and to look ahead with hope.

We’ve themed this issue “To the Forefront” because it reflects the voices and stories that exemplify our shared commitment to an innovative, faith-filled girls’ education that reaches far beyond the gates of Bellefontaine.

As I walk our campus these days, I am struck by how much energy and purpose fill our beloved school. There is learning happening everywhere—inside classrooms, on athletic fields, in quiet conversations, and in moments of service. All of it speaks to the generations of students, faculty, families, and alumnae who believe deeply in the power of our Holy Child mission and values and whose presence continues to shape who we are.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Mabel Wong as our Assistant Head of School. Driven by community-building and enhancing academic excellence, her work is helping us to imagine what it means to “meet the wants of the age” in fresh and meaningful ways. Initiatives such as the Portrait of a Mayfield Student, the Portrait of a Mayfield Educator, and our new academic Pathways Program, set to launch this year, reflect a shared vision for excellence, purpose, and formation—one that prepares our girls for the future they will lead.

The milestone of 75 years on Bellefontaine invites us to celebrate, to reflect, and to serve. We began the year in

September with a joyful celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, followed

by Homecoming Weekend, where we welcomed a record number of graduates back to campus and unveiled new alumnae recognitions.

In November, we joined Mayfield alumnae to support Holidena, an event for families impacted by the Eaton Fire to bring beauty and normalcy to the Christmas season by replacing holiday decorations and creating new memories. In January, we held Cornelia Connelly Day, when our entire community—students,

faculty, staff, parents, and alumnae—came together for a day of service and reflection. Together, these moments remind us that our mission is lived not only in words, but in action.

Looking ahead, my gratitude is matched by a deep sense of excitement for the future unfolding at Mayfield. Each day, I see our girls becoming confident, courageous, and compassionate young women—prepared not only for what they will do, but for who they are called to be. Rooted in faith, energized by

DEAR MAYFIELD COMMUNITY, As I reflect on my first year as Board Chair, I am grateful for the momentum and sense of shared purpose that continue to move Mayfield forward.

The past year was marked by tremendous progress as we entered into Laura’s third year as Head of School. Her clarity of vision, steady leadership, and dedication to Mayfield’s mission have provided important continuity and confidence for our community. We were also pleased to welcome Dr. Mabel Wong as our new Assistant Head of School. Her leadership has already strengthened our academic program and reinforced our focus on innovation, academic excellence, and student-centered learning to meet the wants of the age.

The board itself has been bolstered by the addition of four new members—Ed Aloe, Greg Murphy, Sara Vanis, and Corey Waite—each bringing valuable expertise, fresh perspective, and deep commitment to Mayfield’s future. Their engagement has strengthened our governance and positioned us well for the work ahead.

Looking to the future, we are excited about upcoming campus improvements and enhancements that will support current students and future generations of Mayfield students. These investments reflect thoughtful planning and a firm belief in the importance of providing learning spaces that match the excellence of our programs.

MEET OUR NEW TRUSTEES Ed Aloe Ed Aloe has brought his expertise as a strategic thinker to Mayfield’s Advancement Committee since 2022, contributing as both a generous donor and strategic thinker. He and his wife, Noelle, are parishioners at St. Philip the Apostle Church and have three children—Dominic, Luke, and Brooke ’26. Ed is the Founder and CEO of CALCAP Advisors, which he launched in 2008, and host of “The Real Estate Wealth Podcast.” Ed graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.B.A. degree in business and has served on the board of Foothill Family Service. Dedicated volunteers, both Ed and Noelle have been active at Mayfield Senior School since Brooke arrived, and they look forward to supporting the school for years to come.

Greg Murphy Greg has been an active member of the Risk Management Committee for the past two years, bringing his legal expertise to the table. A graduate of St. Francis High School and the University of Notre Dame, he went on to earn his JD from Loyola Law School. As a partner at Burke, Williams & Sorensen, Greg serves as City Attorney for Buellton, Lawndale, and Temple City. Greg and his wife, Kim, have two children and are deeply involved in the Pasadena-area Catholic community. Their son, Jack, graduated from St. Francis High School and now attends Providence College, while their daughter, Maggie ’24, attends Salve Regina University. Kim is also part of the Holy Child family, having taught at Mayfield Junior School for over a decade. Catholic education has long been a priority for their family, and Mayfield’s mission resonates deeply with them.

Sara Vanis Sara has deep roots in the Pasadena area and a longstanding connection to Mayfield. A graduate of Mayfield Junior School ’94, Santa Catalina School for Girls ’98, and Vanderbilt University ’02, she spent 15 years in client-facing roles at Oaktree Capital Management and Western Asset Management before stepping away in 2020 to focus on family and volunteer work. She and her husband, Mark, have three children—Mimi ’26, Mark Jr. (St. Philip the Apostle School ’27), and Mary-Catherine (SPAS ’30)—and are deeply committed to Catholic education.

Sara has served as St. Philip the Apostle School Board President and on the board of the National Charity League Pasadena Area Chapter. Before joining the board, she served on Mayfield’s Building and Grounds Committee. Sara is inspired by the warmth of the Mayfield community and its commitment to forming students in both faith and intellect.

Corey Waite Corey has served on the Mayfield Senior School Finance Committee for the past two years, bringing expertise in real estate and financial strategy. He is the Founder and President of Rubicon Concierge Real Estate Services and previously held senior leadership roles at Colliers International and CBRE. Corey also serves on the membership committee at Annandale Golf Club and is a past board member. Originally from Hawaii, he attended Punahou School, later graduating from San Marino High School and earning his degree from the University of Arizona. Corey and his wife, Buzzy, have three children—Sarah, Emerson (“Emmie”), and Wendy ’24, now a student at Texas Christian University. Mayfield was an ideal fit for Wendy, and the family feels deeply connected to the community and its mission.

“Meeting the wants of the age.” For readers of Postscripts, these words may be familiar as the vision of Cornelia Connelly, Mayfield’s foundress. But the phrase represents more than history—it is a living call to action. Every day, leaders and faculty work together to thoughtfully translate that vision into purposeful learning and growth for girls at Mayfield.

“We continue to create specific programs that not only prepare girls for college academically, but set them up with the skillsets they need to flourish—here and out there. We want to help our students build their agency so that they feel fully confident in themselves and their capabilities. This is what whole-child education looks like in 2025,” says Laura Farrell, Head of School at Mayfield.

Indeed, the descriptor “college preparatory” takes on a new level of meaning at Mayfield. Students compete in international math modeling competitions, bench press 150 pounds, connect and lead in prayer services and liturgies, learn how to perform self-breast exams, and examine Drosophila under digital microscopes in state-of-theart science labs. This year, they’ll be choosing academic pathways that ready them for focused college studies as part of a forthcoming Mayfield initiative. In other words, Mayfield girls are scholarly, strategic, and strong. Every action, conversation, and challenge at Mayfield is designed to prepare students for purposeful, enriching lives.

In particular, programs such as personal finance classes, the school’s signature four-year Formation of Self course, and Senior Transition Week help Mayfield girls discover their sense of self and purpose.

“She’s going to have an experience that will transform how she sees herself in the world,” says Melissa Tighe, Mayfield’s AP Calculus and Personal Finance Instructor, who has taught at the school for 31 years. Until 2024, Tighe had been teaching personal finance to Mayfield students as a session during Senior Transition Week, and later as a unit during Formation of Self. Now, every girl learns personal finance each year of their Mayfield education.

“Developmentally, many young women need to feel a sense of control as they grow and become acquainted with the ‘real world.’ Sometimes, that control can lead to unhealthy or destructive habits. Tending to their personal finances is a healthy way to channel it. It teaches them one way they can take care of themselves, for life.”

The personal finance classes cover topics such as budgets, taxes, and consumer skills, and incorporate Catholic Social Teaching as students learn about investments and ESG (Environmental Social Governance) criteria. Through interactive lessons that include games and simulations, the four-year course provides young women a powerful entry point into finance, where they are often underestimated and underrepresented, and equips them with information and strategies to thoughtfully navigate their spending and saving throughout their lives.

There are also opportunities to compete as part of Mayfield’s personal finance program: meet MINT, Mayfield Investment

MEET MINT Mayfield Investment Team (MINT) participates in an annual stock pitch competition—modeled after competitions that occur at colleges and universities—during which teams are tasked to present a convincing investment thesis on a United States company and defend the thesis during a Q&A.

No question, this program empowers Mayfield girls. It also infuses hope into our shared future: “I hear about girls initiating conversations about finances at the dinner table and alumnae who are negotiating their salaries and starting IRAs right out of college,” says Tighe. “The transformation is tenfold. Mayfield graduates are financially confident, and our world gains more women with Holy Child values in positions of power and wealth.”

“Although Formation of Self has grown and changed over the years, the ultimate goal remains the same: to create a safe space where a girl can explore what it means to be her true self,” says Erika Mastrobuono, LCSW, who is a school counselor and one of the leaders of Formation of Self (FOS), Mayfield’s signature four-year program that covers essential topics for teenage girls.

In addition to financial literacy all four years, FOS classes address academic self-management, college readiness, health and wellness, personal growth, social justice, and transformational leadership, among other topics. “Inside the classroom, you might see girls working on study skills, learning about college applications, practicing library research techniques, engaging in discussions about coping

skills, participating in a self-defense class, or analyzing their sleep and nutrition hygiene,” says Mastrobuono. The long list of FOS learning outcomes includes holistically informed decision making and the ability to voice healthy boundaries to support strong relationships.

This innovative course is not only about the development of essential skills; it’s an unmatched opportunity that allows each girl to delve into (sometimes) challenging or historically sidelined topics alongside supportive teachers and peers. Throughout their four years in FOS, girls find the communication, learning, and leadership styles that work and feel best for them. “Because of FOS, every girl who graduates from Mayfield will move into the world as an agent of change, empowered with self-efficacy and her own leadership style.”

“Senior Transition Week is when we help the girls realize they have the skills, resources, and confidence they need to move forward from Mayfield,” says Lynn Maloney, Co-Director of College Counseling. Lynn, along with colleagues Katie Clancy ’11 (College Counselor and Academic Dean) and Amy Lareau (Co-Director of College Counseling), organizes and directs this annual week of events, which leads up to Mayfield’s graduation ceremony.

The week is packed with sessions that emulate a college orientation, fostering awareness around personal health

and safety in a college setting and prompting girls to review their college’s policies around AI and academic integrity. As a result, students’ actual college orientations feel like a refresher.

The week also allows many opportunities for reflection.

After completing a service project the week prior, students are given space to process and commit to future service plans. The girls also write a letter to their future selves, imagining the full life they’ll experience and the impact they’ll make. Lastly—a Senior Transition Week favorite— the soon-to-be-graduates hear from young alumnae, who return to campus for a panel discussion and provide the seniors with various firsthand accounts on life postMayfield. “The panel allows seniors to see what’s possible— students hear a range of perspectives from the alumnae, which is really grounding and inspiring. The alums represent all that’s possible for the girls,” says Clancy.

The graduation ceremony itself is a celebration of what’s achievable with intention and practice: “The fact that we practice graduation throughout the week makes for an unforgettable ceremony. The girls feel confident and comfortable being on stage, and they take pride in knowing they’re part of a timeless Mayfield tradition,” says Lareau.

Mayfield girls are collaborating with companies on investment strategies, initiating and executing communitywide clothing drives, and entering colleges with luminous self-advocacy alongside strong academic self-management skills. Their confidence builds. Their values are fortified.

Their hearts are open. The intentionality behind Mayfield’s programs yields unstoppable ambition.

Perhaps the most poignant intention behind every program at Mayfield can be best summed up by Mastrobuono: “If I walk into a classroom and see faces filled with joy, I consider that a success.”

Cornelia would agree: to meet the wants of the age and foster confidence and purpose, joy must be part of the work.

And, research shows, Mayfield girls radiate it.

D

r. Mabel Wong has taught and led at both colleges and high schools—but nothing inspires her more than allgirls education.

Specifically, Mayfield’s all-girls education. “The unique thing about a Mayfield education is that it’s not just a robust academic program, but an intentional experience for girls that is grounded in its mission and values.” We sat down with Dr. Wong to learn more about her—and her goals—as Mayfield’s Assistant Head of School.

WHAT DREW YOU TO MAYFIELD, AND WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT JOINING THIS COMMUNITY? That Mayfield is an all-girls school is what drew me here initially. I’m thoroughly committed to girls’ education—I’m a proud product of it myself. Contributing to the experience and journey that made me who I am today excites me. When I arrived on campus, it felt like home. I’ve never witnessed a school with such a strong sense of “who” it is or with this level of commitment to its mission. Here, the mission, the Holy Child Values, and the action-oriented community are all deeply and genuinely embedded in the campus’s ethos.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP? I knew I wanted to give back to girls’ education, which equipped me with the confidence and direction to thrive in political science, my major that launched my career. My area of specialization is nation building—I’m continually interested in questions of belonging, commonality, and collaboration—and my teaching and leadership philosophy centers on the idea of ekstasis, “to be or stand outside of oneself.” The ethos of education is to inspire individuals

to move beyond themselves and relate to the communities and world surrounding them. High school is a pivotal time for that. As a leader, I’m privileged to foster strategic collaboration among Mayfield community members, in addition to helping move projects forward.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES OR HOPES FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR AT MAYFIELD? My goal is to continue elevating our academic programs and to always align initiatives with our Holy Child goals and values. We are developing and launching the Portrait of a Mayfield Graduate, the Portrait of a Mayfield Educator, and a new academic Pathways Program. The two portraits complement each other, defining the promise we make as a school to our families. We want to make clear the skillsets, values, and attitudes our graduates take with them and what teaching excellence means at Mayfield—how the expertise we expect our faculty to possess translates into what we promise from four years of learning at Mayfield. Our Pathways Program will offer opportunities for students to pursue specific interests and respond to a changing college and workforce landscape. Today, so much of success is about having a unique self-narrative. These pathways will give students what they need to develop their stories.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR ROLE SUPPORTING BOTH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND STUDENT WELL-BEING? Students at Mayfield are given a joyful, attentive environment in which to learn and grow. Our academic support team is robust and intentional. Each week, we meet to discuss every student, bringing data together on academic performance and what informs it, and creating

whole-child-focused plans as needed. I’ve also launched “Mornings with Mabel,” a regular coffee chat with parents and guardians to strengthen family partnerships, which we know are integral to a healthy and successful school.

WHAT’S SOMETHING THE MAYFIELD COMMUNITY MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I watch a shocking amount of television. British police procedurals, in particular.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING AT MAYFIELD THIS YEAR? At Mayfield, students whom I’ve never interacted with greet me by name. I’m eager to connect more with them and continue my wonderful partnership with Laura and faculty as we realize the important projects I mentioned above.

Mayfield Rallies in Response to the Eaton Fire

I

n January 2025, the devastating Eaton Fire left a deep mark on our region, scorching thousands of acres, destroying homes, displacing families, and straining first responders who worked tirelessly for days on end.

transformed into a donation center, stocked with masks, water, blankets, pet supplies, pantry items, hygiene kits, clothing, and more. Congresswoman Judy Chu visited during the height of the effort, offering gratitude and encouragement to our students and volunteers while highlighting the importance of community-led relief efforts.

The impact was heartbreaking and staggering. For many in Pasadena and Altadena, the fires weren’t a distant headline–they were visible from backyards, classrooms, and commutes, a reminder of how quickly lives can change.

Our students played a central role–sorting donations, greeting families, supporting first responders, and ensuring that every box, bag, and bin reached those who needed it most. Their compassion set the tone for the entire effort.

At Mayfield Senior School, the crisis prompted something profound. Guided by Holy Child values and our motto Actions Not Words, students, faculty, alumnae, and families mobilized almost immediately. Overnight, our gym

and weekly Hebrew School—a fellow community of faith who, during this time, became treasured friends. Our Holy Child Network rallied from across the country to support Mayfield’s Community Emergency Relief Fund. We were moved by the solidarity–from monetary donations, thoughtful notes, and even creative fundraising like student-led bake sales, each act of kindness reminded us that we are not just a network. We are a family.

In the days that followed, our Mayfield community gathered for a prayer service centered on healing and hope. And, while the wildfire tested our region, it also illuminated Mayfield’s heart. In moments of crisis, our community did what it always does: it stepped forward with faith, love, and unwavering resiliency–proving once again that service is not an event, but a way of life.

Science Labs That Inspire Last summer, Mayfield unveiled a transformative new chapter in science education with the complete renovation of the Hayden Science Labs. Reimagined from the ground up, the building now features four state-of-the-art classrooms and collaborative spaces designed for how students learn today. Flexible, light-filled, and hands-on by design, the labs invite curiosity, spark creativity, and encourage bold thinking. More than an update, the Hayden Science Labs reflect a deep investment in experiential learning—empowering students to explore, experiment, and engage confidently with the world ahead.

CUB SPIRIT SOARS IN EVERY SEASON Championship Wins, Community Pride, and Athletes Who Led With Heart Mayfield Athletics delivered a year defined by sportsmanship, heart, and community pride.

Our Cubs competed with purpose through record-setting league championships, spirited pep rallies, and Booster Club BBQs that brought our community together.

The year also marked the unveiling of a stateof-the-art weight room, designed to support female athletes through training aligned with female physiology, strength development, and injury prevention.

Four student-athletes signed Division I commitments—Morgan B. ’25 (USC Diving), Jaz J. ’25 (University of Pennsylvania Softball), Monika V. ’25 (Cornell Track), and Audrey N. ’25 (Auburn University Volleyball)—a testament to talent shaped by discipline, resilience, and confidence. Moments like our annual Dig Pink match against FSHA, when Varsity Volleyball earned a fourth consecutive victory and set a new rivalry record, showed how competition and compassion intersect.

Together, these moments remind us that athletics at Mayfield are about more than titles—they build confidence, character, and a commitment to make a difference on and off the field.

Academics That Shape Her Future

L

earning at Mayfield isn’t defined by textbooks and tests—it comes alive through curiosity, exploration, and real-world application. This year, students immersed themselves in dynamic STEM projects, experiential fieldwork, and innovative cross-curricular collaborations that reflect our vision for education in the 21st century.

In science labs, students engineered prototypes, designed environmental solutions, and used data analytics to understand emerging global challenges. Courses in robotics, biomedical science, and digital design empowered students to apply complex concepts to hands-on problems. Our award-winning Math Modeling (M3) team exemplified this spirit. As Loise Wardhana ’25 shared, “M3 has taught me how to understand and engage with issues such as environmental and social changes… this experience has shaped my potential path in college.”

Cross-curricular learning expanded across departments.

Humanities classes partnered with STEM electives to explore topics like climate migration, economic inequity, and digital citizenship. Theology and social justice courses integrated research, storytelling, and statistics to deepen students’ understanding of the world and their role in it.

Experiential education—a hallmark of a Mayfield learning journey—took students beyond the classroom. Field visits to local conservation sites, museums, entrepreneurial labs, and hospitals allowed students to connect theory

The week kicked off with “Anything but a Backpack” Day, featuring everything from suitcases to snorkel bags— and even the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine. A playful wardrobe mashup followed, proving unexpected fashion always wins, before “2000s Day” brought early-aughts nostalgia to life with spot-on throwback looks.

The excitement peaked at the Dance Off, where each class delivered standout performances. The Class of 2025 claimed their third consecutive win, cementing their Spirit Week legacy. ince 1947, Mayfield’s junior class has proudly stepped forward to receive their class rings and embrace new leadership roles during the beloved Ring Night ceremony—a cherished milestone marking their transition to senior year.

Under a starlit sky and pergola, the Class of 2026 gathered with their families, faculty, and friends for a beautiful Mass, led by Father Jim Bevacqua, and a ceremony centered on the theme “One in Faith and Friendship.”

The evening captured the spirit of unity that defines Mayfield, celebrating the unique gifts of each student and the unshakeable sisterhood that connects them. The rings they received will serve as enduring reminders of their shared memories and the exciting journeys that lie ahead.

Adding to the special moment, many students received rings passed down by mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters—all proud Mayfield alumnae. These heartfelt exchanges symbolize the lasting legacy of Mayfield women and the deep bonds that continue to shape our community.

Playing for a Cause Each year, Mayfield’s Dig Pink volleyball match against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (FSHA) turns the court into a sea of pink—and a celebration of strength, hope, and community spirit. The annual event raises awareness and donations for breast cancer research—in honor of the 1 in 8 women affected by the disease, including members of the Mayfield community.

What began as a heartfelt initiative in 2018 has grown into one of the most anticipated nights of the season, blending fierce competition with a meaningful cause. The Varsity Cubs dominated the court, sweeping FSHA 3-0 for an unforgettable victory—our fourth consecutive win and a new school record in the rivalry! The JV team followed with

a strong win of their own, while Frosh/Soph played with a lot of heart and determination.

But as every Mayfield athlete and fan knows, Dig Pink is about more than the scoreboard.

Players, families, and fans rallied together to honor survivors, support those currently battling breast cancer, and remember loved ones lost.

Through every serve, set, and spike, Mayfield’s message was clear: when we come together in spirit and compassion, we can make a difference—on and off the court.

othing spreads holiday joy quite like Kris Kinds! This beloved Mayfield tradition brings students and staff together for a week of secret surprises, thoughtful gifts, and plenty of festive cheer—reminding us all that the best part of giving is the joy it brings to others.

The week kicked off with students excitedly dropping off labeled gifts for their assigned Kris Kind. Throughout the week, the anticipation grew, with each thoughtful gesture building excitement across campus.

The celebration reached its peak at the Kris Kinds assembly, where laughter, joy, and holiday spirit filled the air.

Highlights included a special visit from Santa, fun videos, exciting games, and, of course, the big reveal of each Kris Kind. Students’ smiles and cheers captured the magic of the season, reminding everyone of the warmth and connection that make Mayfield such a special place.

Alongside Kris Kinds, the week was full of festive fun, from Christmas Sweater Day to snow gear and winter-themed

outfits, and even a JC Penney-style photo shoot complete with awkward angles and cheesy grins. The grand finale featured Mrs. Brehove’s dazzling Phantom of the Opera costume, a Broadway-worthy tribute to Christine’s masquerade scene, adding a touch of theatrical magic to the festivities.

Through every gift, game, and joyful moment, Kris Kinds celebrates the spirit of kindness, community, and connection that defines Mayfield. It’s a tradition that leaves hearts full, smiles bright, and memories to cherish long after the season ends.

COMMANDING THE STAGE AND STUDIO

Student Voices, Artistry, and Creative Expression Took the Lead Mayfield’s Theatre and Theatre Tech program took center stage this year, led by a bold and joyful production of Six: Teen Edition that radiated talent, confidence, and collaboration. With powerful vocals, dynamic choreography, and a cast that owned the stage, the performance reflected artistic excellence and the strength of student voice at the heart of an all-girls education.

Our dance program also flourished, as students demonstrated discipline, creativity, and expressive range across styles in two performances, Live in Living Color and Snapshot. Through rigorous training and inspired choreography, dancers grew in technical precision, artistic confidence, and the ability to tell powerful stories through movement.

Beyond the stage, the visual arts and Conservatory programs provided students with opportunities for focused study, creative risk-taking, and artistic growth, allowing them to refine their craft while developing confidence and discipline. Together, the arts at Mayfield are spaces where students find their voices, support one another, and bring their ideas to life—on stage, in the studio, and beyond.

HONORING MRS. TOI TREISTER ’82

In June 2025, Mayfield Senior School bid a heartfelt farewell to Mrs. Toi Treister ’82, who retired after more than two decades of extraordinary service. A Pasadena native and proud alumna of both Mayfield Junior and Senior Schools, Toi embodied the essence of Holy Child education long before stepping into a leadership role. Her lifelong connection to Mayfield shaped not only her own journey, but the experiences of generations of students who benefited from her wisdom, warmth, and steady vision.

Before joining the faculty and administration, Toi served on the Board of Trustees and later as President of the Alumnae Board. She returned to campus in 2003 to teach psychology and world history, quickly becoming a beloved mentor whose classes sparked curiosity and confidence. Years later, when asked to lead the WASC Accreditation Self-Study, Toi stepped forward with characteristic grace. The success of that work led to her appointment as Assistant Head of School for Academics in 2016.

Over the next eight years, Toi helped shape a dynamic academic program.

She expanded AP and Honors offerings, championed innovative courses like Forensics and Formation of Self, and strengthened student support by adding Academic Deans to the team.

Her leadership was consistently rooted in Holy Child values­—guided by empathy and purpose, she supported countless students and families with care.

We thank Toi for her extraordinary dedication and honor a legacy shaped by her deep and enduring love for Mayfield. With gratitude for all she has given our community, we wish her every blessing as she steps into a new chapter filled with joyful possibilities.

One of the things that has always stood out to me about our mission is Cornelia Connelly’s belief that an education must respond to the needs of the times.

For Connelly, “meeting the wants of the age” meant contributing to the growth of the “whole child” such that they were equipped with the skills and spirituality to act in the world joyfully, just-fully, and judiciously.

This, in the mid 19th century, was, undoubtedly, not an easy task. Often described by historians as the “long 19th century,” the period between the French Revolution and World War I saw unprecedented political, social, and technological changes that would define the modern era.

In the mid-1800s as she went about establishing the Holy Child schools, Connelly was witness to the rapid growth and spread of the Industrial Revolution, the global reach of European colonialism, and an impending civil war in the United States. A quick glance at the Book of the Order of Studies in the Schools of the Holy Child Jesus, written in 1863, shows us that, for Connelly, an education that met the disruptions and uncertainty of the “long 19th century” included “religious instruction,” “grammar and literature,” and other “accessory studies” such as “arithmetic, geography, history, composition, music, and needlework.” By providing an education that catered to the “whole child,” steeped in faith and love, Connelly sought to provide young people the skills, values, and attitudes necessary to not simply survive but flourish and to see beauty in the majesty and creative possibilities of the world.

But what about an education that “meets the wants of the age” today? In many ways, the first quarter of the 21st century is not unlike the “long 19th century.” Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of unprecedented change. From climate change to emergent AI, global systems of all kinds seem to be under tremendous stress. In 2018, the futurist and political strategist James Cascio coined the acronym BANI–Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible– to describe the disorienting impacts of these changes. But, as was the case in the “long 19th century,” opportunities abound amidst the changes of the 21st century.

How then do we continue Cornelia Connelly’s vision of “meeting the wants of the age”? While needlework might no longer be necessary for today’s age, what new skills are needed and what are we doing at Mayfield today to equip our students with them? Recently, Cascio proposed a follow-up to his BANI description of our contemporary age, a new BANI model for how to respond to each condition described above. Brittleness is met with Bendability; Anxiety is countered by being Attentive; Nonlinearity asks us to be Neuroflexible; and the Incomprehensible demands Interconnectedness. Translated into a set of educational competencies, meeting the wants of a BANI age requires resilience, analytical thinking, strategic adaptability, and empathetic engagement. What becomes increasingly clear is that today’s age requires educators to not only equip our students with the knowledge and skills to adapt to new ways of doing things, but to provide our students the wherewithal to purposefully tether themselves to the world and to others despite pressures to the contrary.

Luckily, at Mayfield we’ve been doing this since the mid-19th century. Guided by our Holy Child Goals that prioritize community, justice, faith, and action, we continue Cornelia Connelly’s call for “meeting the wants of the age” by situating these goals in our contemporary conditions. To that end, we have embarked on three projects to elevate, innovate, and make our academic program relevant to the wants of today’s age. The first project, developing a Portrait of a Mayfield Graduate, is designed to provide clarity about who a Mayfield Graduate is and what competencies she possesses in order to flourish in the world today. The second project, developing a Portrait of a Mayfield Educator, complements the first by helping us articulate the pedagogical skills and attributes needed to transform our students into women of action for today’s age. Lastly, we are creating an interdisciplinary Pathways Program geared towards equipping our students with the drive and skills to respond to the major challenges of our time.

I am excited for all that is happening and all that is to come.

From a Mayfield Beginning to Global Impact Marcela Escobar-Alava ’86 has built a remarkable career shaped by the confidence, curiosity, and “Actions Not Words” spirit she first developed at Mayfield. After discovering her voice in Speech Class and honing her academic drive on Bellefontaine, Marcela went on to earn degrees from Loyola Marymount University and USC—launching a trajectory that would take her to some of the world’s most influential institutions.

Her professional accomplishments span high-profile leadership roles at Sony Pictures Entertainment, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Monarch Landscape Companies, and even the White House, where she served as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Technology. Today, she leads Agile Infrastructure for the Americas at Sony, bringing more than 30 years of expertise in digital transformation.

Marcela’s journey reflects how far a Mayfield education can carry a young woman—with courage, purpose, and limitless possibility.

A Joyful Celebration for the Class of 2025

O

n a warm June evening filled with pride, gratitude and unmistakable Mayfield spirit, our community gathered to celebrate the Class of 2025 in a commencement ceremony marked by heartfelt reflections and messages.

Graduates, families, friends, faculty, staff, and alumnae filled the North Lawn as Head of School Laura Farrell welcomed guests and honored the many individuals who helped bring the day to life. She spoke movingly about the Class of 2025’s resilience, leadership, and commitment to community, remarking how “true resilience is a blend of courage and adaptability,” qualities the class demonstrated time and again throughout their high school journey.

The featured keynote speaker, Marcela Escobar-Alava ’86, returned to campus with a message rooted in courage and purpose. A trailblazing technology leader whose career has spanned the White House and Fortune 500 companies, Escobar-Alava encouraged graduates to write their own bold stories beyond the gates of Bellefontaine. She reminded them that setbacks can be stepping stones and urged them to “move forward—fast or slow, boldly or quietly—but keep going.” Her words underscored the enduring strength of the Mayfield sisterhood that shaped her own life.

Senior Class President Lara Georgian delivered a heartfelt and eloquent address to her fellow classmates, reflecting on the moments–big and small–that transformed her class from nervous freshmen into a unified sisterhood. She spoke about joy, gratitude, and the bonds formed through shared challenges, triumphs, and everyday laughter, capturing the spirit that defined the Class of 2025.

issey Moe-Cook ’71, recipient of the 2025 Cornelia Connelly Award, has been a lifelong supporter of Mayfield Senior School. Her dedication to being of service at Mayfield, in her parish, and to the Catholic community at large stems from a deep desire to give back.

“It’s important to me to stay involved at Mayfield. My classmates and I are part of its history and of its sisterhood.

We all shared a moment in time.”

Since her graduation from Mayfield, Missey has served as her class representative. She’s also a longtime member and secretary of the Alumnae Council and a Holy Child Associate. She is known to have touched every corner of the Mayfield community, infusing meetings and events with her warmth, wisdom, and humor.

Her devotion and engagement extend throughout her own parish in Ladera Ranch, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,

and the Diocese of Orange County, where she supports liturgical ministries and teaches for the Protecting God’s Children program.

Missey earned a degree in speech pathology and audiology, which she used for several years before moving into the realm of business. At one point during her career in business operations, Missey was asked to staff 5,000 grocery stores in 29 cities in 10 weeks. She said “YES”—and she did it. She also studied and became a Lamaze instructor, teaching parents how to deliver babies.

The plethora of Missey’s positions and experiences underline her view that Mayfield girls should “always take advantage of every opportunity” and appreciate the gift of a Mayfield education that their parents and guardians gave them.

Unquestionably, as her award recognizes, Missey embodies the spirit of Cornelia Connelly. She has adopted the motto “Actions Not Words,” and her actions mark a deep belief in the power of generosity, a smile, and her commitment to service.

or Patricia Reon Roski ’82, recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Alumna Award, leadership has always meant connection with people and place. As president and CEO of Majestic Realty Co., she carries forward a 77-year legacy of supporting families and strengthening neighborhoods.

It’s a philosophy that guides her leadership. Through the Majestic Realty Foundation, Reon and her team channel resources into initiatives that foster powerful relationships between businesses and families, opportunity and access. The work reflects her family’s business legacy and the lasting impact of her Mayfield experience, where collaboration was inseparable from ambition.

Before taking the helm at Majestic Realty Co., Reon built a distinguished career as a real estate attorney. Her expertise is bolstered by a global perspective: she studied abroad, earned degrees from the University of Southern California and Loyola Law School, and developed fluency in Mandarin and worked for the Chinese government on real estate matters.

“Mayfield taught me the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and giving back to the community. Most importantly, being the mother of four remarkable children has allowed me to pass on the values I learned at Mayfield—values that continue to guide me both personally and professionally.”

You do something about it.” That conviction became the Hope for PDCD Foundation, an organization driving cutting-edge research and advocacy for the rare childhood disease that, until recently, had no funding and little visibility.

After 52 years in my Huntington Beach home of six bedrooms and three baths, I sold it and moved to Newport Beach into a two bedroom, two bath townhome in the Bayridge Community on the corner of Jamboree and Bison. The funny thing is my grandchildren, ages 23 to 8 with six in college, were the most upset. Comments ranged from, ‘You don’t have stairs. Where will we take our Christmas picture?’ and ‘WHAT?!? I was coming to live with you after college.’ Well, when they walked in and saw all their favorite things all around they were relieved. Nothing had changed.

They visit every week all week long. The great thing is I visited freshmen Sophia at TCU and her cousin Garrett at SMU in March. Next visit will be Hudson, a senior at Boston College; Olivia, a sophomore at ASU; Izzy, a freshman at San Diego State University; and Jack, at Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus. My USD grad, Kyle, just moved into her first apartment in Newport and she comes over to visit, and we’re going to start cooking together. Don’t worry, my two 16-year-old granddaughters, Mazzy and Brooke, keep me on my toes helping me with techie stuff and I’m the sideline soccer chair coach at Finn (10) and Sage’s (8) games. Oh, and I was able to buy a new car after 21 years.

The famous 2002 Sequoia “Betsy” is still a family member being driven all over Newport by the next generation. Let the good times roll. Hope to see all or some of my Mayfield friends soon. After a visit with Carol Getty Corfman ’65, I realized how important it is to keep our spirit alive.

This can change at any time and as MBC currently means treatment for life, I remain hopeful that future research will bring a cure. The young breast cancer community is active and robust and the community it brings me is invaluable. Please do your selfexams monthly and get screened! Outside of cancer, a fun highlight for me this year was I had the opportunity to attend the surprise *NSYNC reunion in person at the Wiltern in LA (steps away from the stage even!). A lifelong fan, it was a moment I’ll never forget (my soul left my body!).”

Francis alum Evan Ong last October on a beautiful fall day in Vermont. Her sister, Katherine Shalby ’13, was her maid of honor. This year, Colleen is marking 10 years at the Los Angeles Times. She spent the first part of 2025 reporting on the aftermath of the Eaton fire in her hometown of Altadena, and residents’ challenges and resiliency. Early on while reporting on a ravaged temple’s hidden mural that survived the fire, she was heartened to learn that the displaced community had been offered a space for service at her alma mater.

Hobbies include eating, dancing to the Purple Monkey song on his play mat, listening to Beatrix Potter stories, and watching ‘Murder She Wrote’ and ‘Columbo’ at all hours. We drove off in a 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe Bel Air to our reception at the Castle Green in Pasadena, a stone’s throw from Mayfield and the many happy memories we’ve shared together in Old Town. Our bridal party featured not one but two Holy Child school alumnae—my sister Julie Sanchez Brehove ’11 was my matron of honor, and my best friend and Cornelia Connelly High School alum Brooke Showalter Shenon ’11 was one of my bridesmaids.”

Three of my bridesmaids are Mayfield alums, so it was really special to have them by my side on the big day, and we took a group photo at the reception with guests that were also Mayfield alums. I’m so thankful for the community we’re part of. Through Mayfield I made wonderful friends, shared traditions with my sister, and met my husband through a

Lily Fontes ’22: “This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern in Audit at Deloitte’s San Jose office, where I grew both personally and professionally. In my eight weeks, I worked closely with four different engagement teams in the tech industry, working on a variety of tasks including disclosure research on ASC guidance, control walkthroughs, risk assessments, and more. My highlight of the internship was attending a threeday-long intern conference at Deloitte University in Dallas, where I attended seminars on leadership development and met peers in audit. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey in audit and embarking on my path to CPA licensure!

REMEMBERING SR. ELIZABETH MARY STRUB ’47, SHCJ M A R C H 3 0 , 1 9 3 0 – J U LY 2 5 , 2 0 2 5

ayfield Senior School mourned the passing of Sr. Elizabeth Mary Strub ’47, SHCJ, who died peacefully on July 25, 2025, at the age of 95.

A proud Californian and lifelong Holy Child Sister, Sr. Elizabeth was educated at Mayfield for nine years on Euclid Avenue before returning to serve on the faculty from 1955–1962 and as Prefect (Head of School) from 1962–1965.

Her parents, Charles and Vera Strub, generously donated the 500 Bellefontaine Street property to the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, establishing a new and permanent home for Mayfield Senior School in 1950. During her tenure, Sr. Elizabeth was celebrated as a gifted teacher and visionary leader. Beloved by students for her humor and intellect, she also introduced a pioneering four-year science program— biology, advanced biology, chemistry, and physics—a tradition of academic excellence that continues today.

Sr. Elizabeth’s impact reached far beyond Pasadena. After earning degrees from Scripps College, Loyola Marymount University, and later Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Sr. Elizabeth served in global leadership positions for the Society, including 12 years as Superior General (1976–1986). She guided the community through the transformative years following Vatican II, helping shape the Society’s modern mission and structure.

In 1987, she became the first woman to write information documenting Cornelia Connelly’s holiness, which advanced the cause for her canonization and helped lead

to Cornelia being declared Venerable in 1992.

Her later years were spent in Chile, where she founded the Centro Cornelia Connelly in Santiago and devoted nearly three decades of her life to spiritual direction, formation, and the growth of the Holy Child Associates.

In a 2020 video celebrating Strub Hall’s 100th

anniversary, Sr. Elizabeth, ever vibrant and wise, spoke of her deep gratitude for her Mayfield roots. Today, her legacy of leadership, faith, and joyful service continues to inspire the entire Mayfield community.

Mayfield gives thanks for her extraordinary life and faithful commitment to the Holy Child spirit and her enduring legacy of love and service.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY Relief Fund (CERF) DONORS On January 7, 2025, the Eaton Fire erupted in the San Gabriel Mountains. Fueled by powerful winds, it swept into the foothill communities and Altadena, leaving behind an unimaginable path of loss.

Mayfield students, families, faculty, and staff were among the many who lost homes or were displaced. In response to the outpouring of support and offers to help, the Mayfield Community Emergency Relief Fund was created.

The broader Mayfield community, including our sister Holy Child Network schools on the East Coast, responded with remarkable speed and generosity, ultimately contributing more than $250,000 in the true spirit of “Actions Not Words.”

Our community came together in an extraordinary way to lift up those impacted by the fire. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the following donors for their deeply meaningful support.
