Head of School
Dear Mayfield Senior School Community,
Even now, in the spring of my second year as Mayfield’s Head of School, when I enter the gates of 500 Bellefontaine Street, I never cease to be amazed by the beauty of our incredible campus.
Strub Hall, our inviting Pergola, and the beautiful grassy expanses that surround us offer a place where history and learning come together, and that quiet elegance provides the perfect backdrop for the energy and joy that fill our school each day.
As I walk through Mayfield’s hallways, past sunlit windows framing the Arroyo and San Gabriel Mountains, I am continually inspired by the faces that greet me throughout the day. Mayfield girls radiate enthusiasm, curiosity, and a love of learning that energizes our entire community. The true beauty of Mayfield lies not just in its surroundings but in the spirit of the young women who bring this place to life.
Yes, our Mayfield motto is “Actions Not Words.” And it defines our daily mission. It is a way of living at this school we hold so dear.
Every day at Mayfield, I see action all around me. Not just in the bustle across the green or the clatter of shoes up and down the stairs in Strub Hall as classes change from one to the next, but in the daily actions of young women on their way to becoming their future selves.
I see Mayfield girls developing to their fullest potential in classes, on school retreats, in arts conservatories, on athletic teams, and in the volunteer and community activities our students gladly throw themselves into. Action shows its happy, purposeful face every day in what our girls choose to take on, in the work they accomplish, and in the camaraderie they build and share.
The future of our remarkable school is bright and filled with possibility. At Mayfield, our dedicated teachers are shaping this future by designing innovative curricula and teaching strategies that challenge students and equip them to excel. Just as essential is our commitment to nurturing each Mayfield girl’s social and emotional growth, helping her develop empathy, compassion, and resilience. As we continue this vital work, we will empower our students with the confidence and sense of agency they need to become visionary leaders—ready to step beyond Mayfield’s majestic gates and make a meaningful impact on the world.
Our Mayfield community is strong because of our long tradition of enthusiasm, excellence, respect and compassion that makes us a sisterhood. I hope you enjoy this issue of Postscripts as we bring to life the past year of our vibrant and joyful community.
Warmly, Laura

The Board
This past school year marked the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in Mayfield Senior School’s history with the arrival of Laura Farrell as our 15th Head of School. Laura has brought her extraordinary leadership, deep faith, and passion for all-girls Catholic education to our community, and we are already reaping the benefits of her vision and dedication.
In her inaugural year, Laura has seamlessly immersed herself in our Mayfield traditions and vibrant culture. Her commitment to strengthening our mission of inspiring young women to achieve academic excellence and live out our motto, “Actions Not Words”, has been palpable. It is clear that her love for Mayfield and her enthusiasm for our future are boundless, and we are truly blessed to have her guiding us forward.
This year, we celebrated the successful conclusion of the Strub Hall Capital Campaign, which, thanks to our generous donors, has preserved and enhanced the historic heart of our campus. The unveiling of donor dedication plaques stands as a testament to their belief in the power of a Mayfield education and the exciting momentum this achievement has created for our future.
As we celebrate new beginnings, we also honor those who have completed their service to Mayfield.
This year, we bid farewell to three esteemed Board members, Jim LoCoco, Chelisa Vagim, and Richard Vargas, whose dedicated service and wisdom have left a lasting impact. With heartfelt gratitude, we thank them for their unwavering commitment to Mayfield’s mission and values.
It has been an extraordinary year of growth, collaboration, and faith-filled purpose, and I am profoundly grateful for each member of our community. Thank you for your continued support, generosity, and partnership as we carry Mayfield’s legacy forward into a bright and inspiring future.

WITH GRATITUDE: HONORING THREE TRUSTEES FOR THEIR YEARS OF SERVICE
JAMES R. LO COCO
With deep appreciation, we thank Jim Lo Coco for his years of enthusiastic service on Mayfield’s Board of Trustees and, most recently, as Chair of the Advancement Committee. Jim’s professional expertise in finance, combined with his heartfelt dedication to our Holy Child mission, has strengthened our school community in countless ways. As Jim concludes his Board service, we remain ever grateful for his generosity, leadership, and enduring support.
RICHARD VARGAS
We are profoundly grateful for Richard’s invaluable contributions during his time on the Mayfield Board of Trustees. With more than 30 years of experience in higher education admissions and development, Richard brought exceptional insight and strategic guidance to our Advancement, Communications, and Admissions Committees. Richard’s connection to Mayfield is rooted in his daughter Emily ’22, whose journey at Mayfield enriched their family’s connection to our school. As Emily continues her studies at USC, we extend our deepest thanks to Richard for his remarkable service and dedication to our community.
Strub Hall A Legacy Revitalized
In 2020 Mayfield Senior School launched its largest capital campaign in history to renovate and strengthen Strub Hall, a cornerstone of the school’s Holy Child Mission. Gifted by Charles and Vera Strub in 1950, Strub Hall has been central to the school’s legacy and has witnessed over a century of growth. Built in 1920, it has always symbolized tradition and progress, but after 100 years, it was time for a major transformation.
The renovation, which began in 2021, aimed to achieve four key goals: optimize collaborative learning, enhance seismic safety, modernize building systems, and preserve the hall’s historic features. This was more than a physical transformation; it was a commitment to the future. Strub Hall now stands as a symbol of the connection between past and future generations, fostering a sense of belonging and inspiring growth, curiosity, and community.
The culmination of this transformative project was the receipt of a record $3 million gift—the largest in the history of Mayfield. This generous donation, along with four other seven-figure gifts, played a crucial role in advancing the school’s master plan and ensuring Strub Hall’s continued ability to support Mayfield’s mission. Today, Strub Hall houses modern classrooms and technology, with spaces designed to foster collaboration, leadership, and innovation.
On June 30, 2024, the Board of Trustees proudly announced the successful conclusion of the Strub Hall: Century 2 Capital Campaign. We are deeply grateful to the benefactors whose vision and generosity have secured Mayfield’s future and continue to shape the potential of every student who passes through Strub Hall’s doors. Through their support, Mayfield’s legacy of excellence endures, ensuring that the school remains a place where tradition and innovation thrive hand-in-hand.
Inside the walls of Strub is where it all begins.

Living Our Holy Child Goals
As Cornelia Connelly believed, one’s faith is not just determined by prayer and reflection, but through action. Inspired by this philosophy, she founded the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) in 1846, making action the cornerstone of a Holy Child education. Rooted in the works of mercy and the incarnational spirituality of its founder, the Holy Child charism is our expression of Catholicism—one that calls us to help others grow in faith and lead fulfilling lives. At Mayfield, we embody this spirit through our motto, “Actions Not Words,” as we encourage students to embrace the seven Holy Child Goals and use their unique gifts to make the world a better place.
“You must not hide the gifts God has given, but use them in His service.”
- Cornelia Connelly
GOAL 1: FAITH
At Mayfield Senior School, we believe that faith is a deeply personal yet communal experience. We embrace and celebrate the diverse religious traditions of our students, faculty, and staff, creating an inclusive environment that fosters mutual respect and understanding. Rooted in our Holy Child education, we encourage our students to actively explore and deepen their own faith journeys, recognizing that faith is nurtured through both prayer and action.
Offering opportunities for reflection, service, and worship, our students actively live out faith throughout the community. We come together through our Campus Ministry Council’s efforts in planning prayer services that invite students to participate in liturgy, homily, song, and communion.
GOAL 2: COMMUNITY
We celebrate and embrace the diversity of religious journeys in our school by joining together to create an environment of acceptance, belonging, and understanding for all faiths. Through our retreats, students are given the time and space to step away from the busyness of daily life, reflect on their personal beliefs, and connect with one another on a deeper level. These retreats offer meaningful opportunities for selfdiscovery, spiritual growth, and shared experiences, fostering a greater sense of unity within our community.
GOAL 3: CURIOSITY
Holy Child education is built on a foundation of intellectually challenging, innovative, and creative programming that inspires students to cultivate their innate curiosity. At Mayfield, we believe that curiosity is the driving force behind meaningful learning and personal growth. Our academic approach goes beyond traditional methods, encouraging students to engage deeply with the world and those around them.
Our classrooms are intentionally designed for collaborative learning, creating spaces where students can develop skills of communication, problem-solving, self-advocacy, and leadership. Students in Holy Child Schools are taught that curiosity, combined with the courage to take risks, opens up a world of possibilities. Whether it’s experimenting with a new idea, delving into a challenging topic, or presenting a unique solution, students learn that embracing uncertainty can lead to innovation and new discoveries.
GOAL
Principles of Catholic social teaching, such as compassion, justice, peace, inclusion, and equity, are prominent within our community regardless of religious identity. We are committed to fostering an environment where conversations around social justice are not only encouraged but integral to the student experience. The goal is not just to educate but to empower students to become compassionate, socially conscious leaders who are committed to taking action. One of the ways our community members make this effort is our Student Justice Leadership Council. Members of the council attended a conference in which they discussed ways their schools can enhance these areas within their communities. Each member of the council has been working towards their proposals and presenting to the Board of Trustees.
GOAL 5: RESPECT
Holy Child Schools create a learning climate based on trust and reverence for the dignity and uniqueness of each person. There is a dedication to learning, understanding, and appreciating all cultures, perspectives, experiences, and differences. Our student-led affinity groups provide our students who identify with those groups a space for communication and connection but also the opportunity to share with the school community. They actively engage and invite members of our community who do not identify to learn more.
GOAL 6: GROWTH
We are committed to supporting students through social and emotional learning in an environment that promotes personal growth and development. Mayfield Senior School has a unique Formation of Self program that students take all four years. Each year the curriculum is targeted towards the students’ developmental needs. Through this approach, we achieve balance in our community by meeting the academic and emotional needs of our students.
GOAL 7: MISSION
Our mission is not just a statement—it is a call to action. We believe that our faith compels us to be agents of positive change in the world, working toward the common good and standing in solidarity with those in need. This commitment to service is central to our school’s identity. Through programs like Loaves and Fishes, our community comes together to provide direct support to those facing food insecurity. This hands-on experience not only meets immediate needs but also fosters empathy, a deeper understanding of social issues, and a lifelong commitment to helping those around us.
Student Retreats
Grounded in our Holy Child values, spirituality, and mission, Mayfield’s Retreat Program inspires students to become joyful young women of faith, empowered with a strong sense of self, a deep respect for the dignity of others, and an awareness of God’s active presence in their lives. Each grade-level retreat is student-led, fostering leadership with integrity.
9TH GRADE
“Let us try day by day to do what Jesus would do, to speak as He would speak, to think as He would think.”
- Cornelia Connelly
As they wrapped up their first year at Mayfield, 9th graders gathered at St. Joseph’s Salesian Youth Retreat Center for a meaningful retreat themed “Voices of the Heart.” The retreat provided a valuable opportunity to step away from their busy lives and spend time in prayer, self-discovery, and personal growth. Encouraging students to embrace their authentic selves, the experience helped them recognize the many voices that influence their hearts and strengthen their own voices so that God’s presence could be felt and shared through them. Through faith-filled experiences and thoughtful discussions, students deepened their connections with one another, fostering a strong sense of unity within their class.
11TH GRADE
“You must not hide the gifts God has given, but use them in His service.” - Cornelia Connelly
The Junior Retreat at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center is a cherished tradition where students reflect and celebrate their God-given gifts. Centered on the theme of “Gifts” and an awareness that Jesus is indeed the greatest gift we have received, juniors participated in transformative activities that inspired personal growth, a greater appreciation of one another and deepened their understanding of faith and purpose. Each student explored how her unique gifts come alive at Mayfield and beyond, enabling her to say “yes” to life and share her giftedness with others.”
10TH GRADE
“Be yourself but make that self just what Our Lord wants it to be.” - Cornelia Connelly
The 10th Grade Retreat, themed “Choices — Becoming Your Best Self,” took place at St. Joseph’s Salesian Youth Retreat Center and focused on authenticity, personal growth, and building relationships. Through prayer, reflection and engaging activities, sophomores delved into Christ’s witness of being himself, encouraged to embrace their true selves, understand that their choices affect others and that these matter in building and strengthening their connectedness and sense of community as they continue their faith journey together.
12TH GRADE
“This is the time to ask for great things.” - Cornelia Connelly
The Class of 2024 gathered at the Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center in Oceanside for a meaningful retreat inspired by Cornelia Connelly’s incarnational spirituality. Surrounded by natural beauty, the seniors took time to reflect on their maturing faith, on gratitude and the journey they have shared at Mayfield, integrating all of their high school experiences within their own spirituality and values. This special retreat provided an opportunity to be intentional in finding God in all things and to encourage and support one another through conversations about their spirituality and faith journey before graduation.
Leadership Councils
At Mayfield Senior School, our five Leadership Councils empower students to take the lead in fostering community, shaping school culture, and embodying our Holy Child mission. Each council— Arts, Athletics, Campus Ministry, Student Council, and Student Justice Leadership (SJLC)—focuses on a unique aspect of campus life, providing opportunities for students to inspire and serve their peers. Through collaboration and thoughtful leadership, these councils cultivate skills, deepen connections, and amplify the voices of our students.

ARTS IMMERSION TRIP 2024
A Journey of Culture
This spring, 65 Mayfield students embarked on a transformative 12-day Arts Immersion trip across Europe, beginning in Edinburgh, Scotland, and traveling through England before concluding in the vibrant city of Paris. The journey was filled with unforgettable experiences, blending cultural exploration, artistic inspiration, and a deep connection to Mayfield’s Holy Child values.
The adventure began with Palm Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh, followed by a visit to the medieval town of St. Andrews and an evening of traditional Scottish music and dancing at a lively Ceilidh. From exploring the historic grandeur of Edinburgh Castle to wandering the picturesque Royal Mile, students soaked in the essence of Scottish culture. As they moved south, highlights included a visit to Blenheim Palace, the awe-inspiring Stonehenge, and a tour of Mayfield School in England, where they celebrated the schools’ shared Holy Child mission.
On the last leg of the trip in Paris, students marveled at masterpieces in the Louvre, admired the stunning Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, and reflected on their blessings during a magical Seine River cruise. Guided by the spirit of Actions Not Words, the Arts Immersion trip offered students a unique blend of education, creativity, and community, leaving them with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for the rich traditions and values that connect them to Mayfield and the world beyond.
Culture and Connection
Academic Update
Students had the opportunity to explore a variety of academic experiences that blended traditional learning with real-world challenges, discovering a world of opportunity both inside and outside the classroom.
In robotics, the Rock N’ Roll Robots and Javabots, tackled problem-solving by designing and building their own robots to compete in challenges. Mentors from Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) provided invaluable guidance, inspiring students with real-world expertise in robotics and engineering. A partnership with the Girl Scouts further enriched the program, encouraging teamwork and empowering students to explore STEM fields with confidence. For many participants, it was their first experience with advanced technology, and they quickly learned that persistence and collaboration are essential to success.
Our Math Modeling Team took on the 14-hour MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, addressing issues like the housing shortage and homelessness crisis. Beyond competitions, students collaborated with a local business to solve real-world logistical problems, applying mathematical principles to optimize processes and develop innovative solutions. Through these handson experiences, students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and a passion for using math to tackle complex global challenges.
Through it all, our Formation of Self (FOS) program helped students develop resilience and self-awareness, guiding them through personal growth as they built relationships and learned to navigate life’s challenges.
Academic learning at Mayfield goes beyond mastering content—it’s about developing the mindset and skills to thrive. Through hands-on projects, internships, and self-discovery, our students are learning to lead, innovate, and make meaningful contributions to the world.
“What one is called to do, she is called to do with all her might.” - Cornelia Connelly
Conservatory for the Arts
Mayfield’s Conservatory for the Arts provides students a space to explore their creativity, offering opportunities to dive into various artistic endeavors. The fall production of The Diary of Anne Frank and spring musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee showcased the dedication, sensitivity, and teamwork that define the Mayfield experience. In preparing for The Diary of Anne Frank, students approached the profound historical material with grace and understanding, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance that honored the story’s legacy while fostering deeper conversations about empathy and resilience.
With nine diverse programs, the Conservatory fosters creativity across campus, giving students the chance to explore new interests or deepen existing passions. Through hands-on classes, supportive community, and productions, students are encouraged to take risks and cultivate their artistic talents.

Celebrating the Class of 2024
The Class of 2024’s journey to graduation was shaped by unique challenges and transformative growth. Starting their freshman year virtually, they dreamed of walking the Mayfield campus in person
Guided by Cornelia Connelly’s vision of educating the whole person— mind, body, and spirit—Mayfield instills resilience, purpose, and a commitment to community. This year’s Holy Child Goal, Community, strengthened their bond as a class during uncertain times.
“You entered Mayfield as girls from many schools, but you leave as young women united in sisterhood,” said Head of School Laura Farrell, emphasizing that Mayfield’s sisterhood is built on perseverance, growth, and love.
Commencement speaker Dr. Silvana Hidalgo ’05 reminded graduates that, “the last 4 years as a Mayfield student have already prepared you for the next stage more than you realize.” As she reflected on her own journey since leaving the gates of Bellefontaine, she shared that it isn’t going to be easy but assures them that something worth working towards shouldn’t be easy. “Easy is boring. In a world of instant gratification, doing hard things is good.”
From virtual beginnings to in-person celebrations, the Class of 2024 embodies strength, unity, and purpose. As they step forward, they carry the spirit of Cornelia Connelly, ready to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, serve, and lead with faith and compassion.
“Easy is boring. In a world of instant gratification, doing hard things is good.”

Mayfield Senior School celebrated Alum Homecoming Reunion 2023, inviting alums from all class years to return to campus for a variety of events. The weekend kicked off with a Friday evening Mixology and Mingle gathering, followed by a Roses and Rosè Luncheon on Saturday.
For many alums, this was the first time seeing the award-winning Strub Hall renovations, and they welcomed the opportunity to join student-led tours following the luncheon.
Sunday began with a Homecoming Mass to celebrate the 2023 Cornelian Award recipient, Ellen Banks, from the Class of 2010. The award is given annually to an alum who exemplifies the Holy Child ideal of service, “Actions Not Words,” through her contributions to family, community and profession.
Following Mass, alums and their families enjoyed a Family Funday, with games, arts & crafts, tours, Pie ’n Burger, and Handel’s Ice Cream.

At Mayfield, the bond between teachers and students extends far beyond the classroom, creating a community rooted in trust, mentorship, and mutual growth. A single teacher’s passion and guidance can shape the lives of countless students, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and carry forward the values they’ve learned. This ripple effect stretches across generations, as students become leaders, innovators, and changemakers who reflect the lessons of compassion, resilience, and curiosity instilled in them. It’s a testament to the transformative power of a supportive, engaged community.
This legacy of inspiration is exemplified by Melissa Tighe (math), Dr. Anne Hartfield ‘77 (social studies), and Theresa Peters (science)—dedicated teachers who have been shaping minds and hearts at Mayfield for over 30 years. These exceptional educators have had a direct impact on generations of students, fostering a love of learning that has propelled alums into diverse and meaningful careers. From engineering and law to public service and the arts, their influence has reached far beyond the gates of Bellefontaine. Alongside Mayfield’s Holy Child values, these remarkable teachers have been central to launching students into the world, equipped with the knowledge and integrity to make a difference.
