Thoughtful Educators In late August MJS faculty participated in a two-day professional development workshop with Cathy Berger Kaye (CBK Associates) devoted to advancing service learning through academics, engagement and purposeful action. This commitment to service learning included sharing ideas and collaborating on effective strategies to take programs into practice.
Projects for the year included nutrition, hunger, the environment, disaster preparation and social justice. The kindergarten continued a partnership with the Humane Society, focusing on animal welfare. The eighth grade expanded on a theme of intolerance and social justice already within their Religion curriculum, and the seventh grade learned the many ways Mayfield Junior School runs through a School internship program. These interdisciplinary experiences are designed to give students both voice and choice as they navigate process, build partnerships in the community and draw tangible connections throughout the curriculum. When students explore the history of an issue in English or Social Studies, analyze need and outcome in their math classes or express perspective in art class, they see the scope of real world problems, and gain the skills and information to develop a solution. Classwork takes on a renewed purpose as lessons stretch far beyond the classroom and learning happens both in the journey and the outcome.
A Comfortable Campus July and August 2015 were busy on campus preparing for the 2015-16 school year. Many improvements were made to further enhance and support the academic programming. Additionally, the faculty was welcomed back to School in late August with a renovated lounge. The new lounge has a family-style table made from a repurposed barn door to encourage interaction and discussion, a wall of bookshelves for sharing our love of reading, comfortable chairs for a quick break in the day and snacks to keep our faculty energized! • Remodel of Hayden/Junior Building employee lounge • Upgrade of gym lockers to double capacity • New furniture for Kindergarten classrooms • HVAC equipment upgrades
Professional development opportunities encourage
the Mayfield faculty in their dedication to providing the most robust and thoughtful program possible in every classroom. Support of our School through the annual fund and endowment allows our faculty to pursue passions, develop new skills and explore innovative teaching practices that benefit students and strengthen the educational program. Weekly Inspiration For many parents, it may be the best part of Tuesday. Sometime in the early evening the e-newsletter, The Maywire, arrives. And while they appreciate all the information it contains, it is not the reminders, announcements or news that makes this weekly communication anticipated and quickly opened, it’s the Notes from the Headmaster. What will Mr. Gill write about this week? Reflective, honest, often funny and always thought-provoking, the weekly Notes from the Headmaster is a ritual started in Joe Gill’s first year at MJS. Over the last eight years, the Notes have provided an opportunity to consider the bigger picture, examine our lives and provide real life connections to our Holy Child mission. Notes from the Headmaster are posted weekly at: mayfieldjs.wordpress.com

Every year, I look forward to the fall season and Book Fair.
It’s a distinct honor to have best authors and illustrators in children’s literature visit our students and talk about what it takes be a writer and artist. We have an enormously good time during Family Night, Donuts with Dads and Special Friends, and the Parents’ Author Brunch. WINTER Opportunities to Gather Christmas Concert at St. Andrew Church The Christmas season at Mayfield Junior School is filled with joyful celebrations, wonderful traditions and opportunities to share our gifts with our community. The season provides several opportunities for our music department to shine, demonstrating the strength of the program and the importance of arts education to our mission. For the last three years, Mayfield has been blessed 22 - Mayfield Junior School 2015/2016 – Winter
with the opportunity to hold the concert beneath the stunning architecture of St. Andrew Church. In 2015, students in Grades 3 -8 performed including the Chamber Choir and Concert Choir. In between songs, members of student council reminded us of our many blessings with inspirational readings. In such a beautifully serene setting both song and spoken word had special resonance for all in attendance.
Kindergarten Nativity Play This retelling of the Christmas story by the youngest members of the student body has provided countless stories and can easily spark memories for the many alumni who once took the stage as angel, shepherd or king.
Mothers’ Christmas Luncheon The Mothers’ Luncheon is an opportunity to honor all mothers as we await the birth of the Holy Child. The 8th graders join their mothers at the luncheon, seventh graders assist in serving the lunch, and musical performances complete the celebration. Each year gifts for families at the Good Shepherd Shelter are donated through the Adopt-a-Family program.

Creative Engagement through Discovery and Exploration Native American Scholars The third graders shared their knowledge of Native American culture, beliefs and customs in a moving stage performance and classroom exhibition. The play, staged in the round with multiple focal points, highlights the tradition of story or myth-telling as a way for the tribe elders to pass on history and explain the natural world. The theme of tribe culture and custom was continued in a Native American project exhibition. There were wonderful 3D representations of the homes, hunting weapons and regional geography of many Native American tribes. Several students recreated traditional foods, and all included extra details via iPad slideshows. Student teams showed creativity, good collaboration and confident speaking skills in their presentations. 26 - Mayfield Junior School 2015/2016 – Winter

Experiential Learning The power of experiential learning can easily be seen on the faces of eager students the morning of a field trip. Take them out of the regular routine, challenge their minds and bodies and they love it. From bonding with friends to new experiences and confidence building, the benefits are substantial for any kind of learner. In the sixth grade the physical science curriculum is supported by an overnight trip to AstroCamp in Idyllwild, California. The program provides an opportunity for students to explore the wonders of the universe through experiential labs, and adventure and team building activities. Each of the labs includes a short lecture, but then it’s all hands-on learning as the kids create and launch their own rockets to explore Forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion, experience a rock climbing wall as part of a fact finder mission to Mars, and participate in dramatic interactive experiments to demonstrate planetary atmosphere and states of matter. Risktaking activities such as the Power Pole jump and zip line, explain gravity while challenging students to step out of their comfort zone. 36 - Mayfield Junior School 2015/2016 – Spring

Studio MJS – Benefit 2016 The Mayfield Junior School community came together for Benefit 2016: Studio MJS on Saturday, May 7. Each year the Benefit is a major fundraising event that strengthens the school’s endowment. In addition this year a special Paddle Raise was held to help fund the D-Lab, a new creative space to promote design thinking, exploration across multiple subjects and technology integration. Thanks to the MJS community who demonstrated their belief in all a Mayfield education has to offer, the D-Lab will be a place for MJS students to dream, design, discover and do!

Student-Centered Learning It may have been wet and dreary outside but the weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of our sixth graders as they brought ancient Greece to life in the 2016 Greek Festival. Almost every classroom in the Hayden building, including the hallway, was alive with activity. Epic battles were staged, traditional foods explored, ancient Olympic races challenged visitors, and the adventures of Hercules were highlighted in dramatic performances.
