From the Headmaster

When looking back at the blessings I have received over the past five years at Mayfield Junior School, I start with the loving and caring people. The fabric of our community is woven together by children, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, parents of alumni and friends of our Holy Child school. The common thread of our Mission creates and sustains something remarkable that has an affect on all of us.

When I came to Mayfield Junior School in 2008, I fully anticipated wonderful things for I was joining a celebrated and established institution. However, as I now look back, I see just how terrific the time has been. Our kids remain joyous and loving, our parents supportive and engaged, and our faculty dedicated and passionate. We have seen growth in enrollment and in philanthropic support and participation. Our school program has expanded in the arts, technology and electives, and a comprehensive professional growth process has been adapted for all employees.

The Board of Trustees has made strategic decisions that have strengthened our financial health significantly, doubled funds for financial aid and kept tuition in check. The alumni program has taken off and we have connected with both institutions and organizations within the greater Pasadena area to become partners in our work. The list of accomplishments and accolades is long and the summary is that as a result of the efforts of our entire community, Mayfield has never been stronger.

From a personal perspective, I can share how my life has been changed, enhanced, by my involvement in a Holy Child community. The essence of what Cornelia Connelly intended for the children has transferred over to my work and how I see my life as an educator. Respecting and loving the children in everything we do, within this Catholic environment, not only benefits the students, but also is incredibly fulfilling for the adults.

Being a part of Mayfield Junior School has been a blessing in every sense and I look forward to the next stage of our School’s development.

Board Notes The Board of Trustees provides support and leadership to Mayfield Junior School. The Board is responsible for the financial viability of the school, long-range planning and adherence to the mission and philosophy. Along with the Headmaster, the Board understands and values the school’s history and heritage, while strategically guiding it into the future.

Mayfield Junior School Honors Retiring Trustees and Welcomes New Trustees At the final meeting in May, retiring trustees, Manuel Abascal, Tim Garrity, Jacqueline Meek, Jeff Moore and James Sadd, were recognized for their accomplishments and dedication to Mayfield Junior School.

Retiring Members Manuel Abascal [ father of Mateo ’13 ] served on both the Buildings and Grounds and Risk Management Committees during his term, and chaired the Risk Management Committee in 2011 -12 and 2012-13.

His legal background was particularly valued when it came to Risk Management conversations, as his sophisticated approach and legal understanding were instrumental to the committee’s discussion on School policies and procedures.

Tim Garrity [ father of Bridget ’13, Luke ’17, Meghan ’19, Grace ’21] served on the Committee on Trustees, Development, Finance and Audit, and Executive Committees in addition to the Investment Sub-Committee and Marketing and Endowment Ad hoc Committees. He was the Finance and Audit Committee Chair in 2010 -11 and the Committee on Trustees Chair in 2012 -13. As Chair of the Committee on Trustees he was an integral voice and leader in helping to build an excellent group of new trustees who possess professional expertise as well as a greater understanding and commitment to Holy Child education and Mayfield Junior School’s mission.

Jacqueline Meek [ mother of Blake, ’09, Taylor ’11] has served on the Committee on Trustees, Finance and Audit, Buildings and Grounds, Executive, and Development Committees as well as the Investment Sub-Committees and Endowment Ad hoc Committee. Jacqueline chaired the Annual Giving Campaign in 2009 -10 and 2010 -11, assisting the school with the incredible achievement of 100% parent participation for the two years she was chair and setting the trend for the years to follow.

She also served as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee in 2011 -12, sharing her expertise with the committee and the school. Jacqueline will be remembered for being a champion for growing financial aid as both the Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee as well as a Board member.

Her strong commitment to and advocacy for the increase of the financial aid budget set a new priority in helping families afford a Mayfield education.

Jeff Moore [ father of Josh ’03, Chelsea ’06, Jack ’11] has served on the Committee on Trustees, Finance and Audit, and Executive Committees as well as the Investment Sub-Committee. With both his professional expertise and his dedication to the financial strength of the school we were very fortunate to have Jeff as a valued steward of our investment portfolio over the past eight years.

James Sadd [ father of Jamie ’07, Marie ’11] has served on the Mission and School Life, Buildings and Grounds, and Risk Management Committees in addition to the Technology and Marketing Ad hoc Committees. As a professor at Occidental College and an educator who understands the importance of the elementary and middle school years in the growth of a child, Jim brought valuable insight to the Board of Trustees. Additionally, Jim prepared many demographic studies for the school, offering data and analysis to better strategize for the future.

New Members Mayfield Junior School is proud to announce our new Trustees for the 2013-2014 school year. The professional and personal background of these individuals will ensure the tradition of service and leadership to Mayfield Junior School.

As a second generation alum Chantal Berger Bennett ’85 is part of a long history at Mayfield Junior School.

Her father Peter Berger ’42 attended Mayfield School with some of his siblings, including Inez Berger, SHCJ ’48, and now Chantal has five children, Charlie who graduated in 2012 and Gabriela ’14, Lauren ’15, Katie ’17 and John ’19 who have also attended. Chantal has a degree in economics from UC Berkeley, and professionally has worked as a project manager for a commercial construction firm prior to starting her family. In the community Chantal has served on the board at both Five Acres and Art Center 100 and also has served on the Mayfield Junior School Alumni Council.

Michael Buchanan is the father of current students Baylor ’18, Caleb ’19 and Tessa ’20. Mike graduated with honors from Brown University with a B.A. in organizations behavior management and business economics. He has worked for such companies as Conseco Capital Management, Blackrock Financial Management, Janus Capital Management and Credit Suisse Asset Management, and is currently the Head of Global Credit at Western Asset Management. In the Pasadena community, Michael is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors of Foothill Family Services and has also served on the Board of Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School. Mike has enjoyed being a youth athletic coach for football, basketball, baseball, soccer and lacrosse.

Chuck Carroll is the father of three Mayfield Junior School alumni, Brandon ’00, Alysia ’02 and Shelby ’05.

His wife Diane also served on the Board of Trustees here at Mayfield. Chuck graduated from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles and went on to Cal State, Los Angeles for a finance degree in business administration. He also attended the Banking School, Graduate School of Business at the University of Washington. For over 40 years, Chuck has spent his career in the banking industry and is currently working for Citizens Business Bank in Pasadena.

He is the manager for the Community Benefit Organizations Department, which specializes in providing banking and investment services to 501(c)(3)s throughout Califor-

nia. Chuck has been very involved in the community serving as Past President of The University Club in Pasadena, Past Regional Commissioner of AYSO Region 13 and has been a trustee of such organizations as Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena Convention Center Operation Company, Patron Saints Foundation and Union Station Homeless Services.

Scott McBride is the father of Sara ’15 and Ryan ’18 and has a two-year-old daughter, Kathleen, at home. Holy Child is a tradition in their family, as Scott’s wife, Luz, attended Mayfield Senior School. Scott received his B.A. in economics from Georgetown University, his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and is also a CFA charter holder.

His professional career has taken him from Fidelity Investments in Boston to Deloitte Consulting in San Francisco.

He is currently a portfolio manager at Hotchkis and Wiley Capital Management in Los Angeles, where he plays an integral part in the investment research review and decision-making process as well as coordinates the day-to-day management of Large Cap Fundamental Value, Large Cap Diversified Value and Global Value portfolios. In the community, Scott serves as an AYSO soccer coach and has recently started coaching lacrosse.

Erika Freihage Randall is the mother of Carter ’21 and Tara ’18. She received her B.A. in psychology from James Madison University and her master’s degree in education from Harvard University, with a focus on higher education administration, planning and social policy. She has held a variety of positions in higher education specializing in service learning including founding Director of the CSU Center for Community Engagement. Currently, as a consultant with the Center for Community Engagement at the California State University Office of the Chancellor, she leads system-wide initiatives across all 23 campuses to increase the number of service-learning opportunities for CSU students and she advises the Chancellor on issues related to CSU community engagement policies, legislation and programs. In addition to her professional career, Erika is also an active volunteer in the community, serving in a variety of roles including the Pastoral Council at Holy Family Catholic Church, Vice President of Operations and Board of Directors of Christmas in April in Long Beach and Assistant Coordinator of MOPS at Lake Avenue Church.

Graduation: Mayfield Junior School Class of 2013 With joy and great pride, the Mayfield Junior School community celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2013 on June 7. The ceremony featured recognition with traditional awards, a choral presentation and several speakers including Headmaster Joe Gill, Student Body President Declan Floyd, and graduation speaker, Mayfield parent, Albert Shelton. In addition Conor McKenna, Class of 2008, welcomed the class on behalf of the MJS Alumni Association. Filled with humor, gratitude and many blessings for the future, Graduation 2013 was a tribute to the many accomplishments of this close-knit and talented class.

“Preparation is a complicated aspect of life…Good grades aren’t earned in order to keep parents happy and off your back, doing your homework isn’t to simply satisfy your teacher and succeeding isn’t just a measurement compared to another person, but a demonstration of your own greatness. Being at Mayfield Junior School has been your chance to prepare.”

“58 teenagers will walk out of here equipped to take on the world. Those who have taught you, those who have raised you and those who have walked this path with you as classmates, know that you are ready. “I have witnessed that Mayfield is “almost paradise” because of three unique characteristics: Spirituality, Love and Happiness. These characteristics have provided the foundation for you (our children) to achieve in academics, arts and athletics, and I must say this class has raised the bar in all areas.”

“Spirituality is the foundation at Mayfield. When you step on campus you feel the Holy Child spirit. From Morning Prayer, special intentions prayer lists in advisory, religion class and the chapel, everyday is filled with God’s word. Having come from a public school environment, it didn’t take me and my family long to feel the faith based presence here at MJS. Next is Love. Family Love is alive and well here at Mayfield. High fives, hugs and embraces are commonplace. Acts of kindness and support for new and old families is the norm. From play dates, to class parent parties to social events on and off campus, the Mayfield family gives you a warm feeling, nurtures you and holds you near to its heart. We laugh together and we cry together. We are family. Last is Happiness. I often joke with friends that MJS is the happiest place on earth and Disneyland comes in second... Happiness is seen on the faces of K-8th. Faculty and staff are happy and no matter what the outside world delivers, MJS reflects, responds and returns to its safe and happy place. In conclusion, I know of 58 reasons why the world will be a better place… it is because of the impact that the class of 2013 will have. Each of you has a special gift that the world needs. So respond to your calling …no pressure… and follow this 8th grade achievement of MJS in 2013, with good choices - with a high school diploma in 2017, a BA or BS in 2021 an MBA or MA in 2023 or an MD, JD or PHD in 2025. “ …As you move into high school, three suggestions: Be open, be responsible and be grateful. First, be open, beginning with being open to new extra-curriculars. You may learn about something that really interests you that you didn’t even know was available, and you’ll certainly meet new people. Be willing to talk and make friends with people from different backgrounds. I remember one of the best conversations I had freshman year was after football practice with one of my teammates. He told me what it was like to grow up in Compton, which I didn’t know anything about.

He was a friend of mine all four years. Second suggestion: be responsible. Spend the extra time to do as well as you can in school. Teachers won’t chase down your parents anymore if you’re not doing your work, and it will be up to you to figure out school. Learning is intrinsically uncomfortable, but finding the right answer is worth the effort. Also don’t do anything stupid. I probably don’t even need to give an example here. Finally, be grateful. Thank your parents. Despite your talents, without them you probably wouldn’t be here. Thank your teachers for all the work they’ve done to educate you. Mayfield Senior School The Holy Child Merit Scholarship The Holy Child Merit Scholarship is the highest award presented to an entering Mayfield Senior School student.

The Merit Scholarship Committee designated six Holy Child Scholars for the incoming class of 2017. This award is granted to outstanding students enrolled in Catholic elementary schools. This award is also granted to those who best embody the spirit of the Holy Child philosophy, which is dedicated to enhancing the lives of others.

Electives 2.0 | Creative Classes Keep Things Interesting Every Thursday, this year, just before lunch seventh and eighth grade students could be found investigating crime, honing comedy improv skills, arguing a new book’s merits or jamming to rock, blues and jazz among other things.

Organized anarchy? No, the students had not taken over class time in favor of creative pursuits- in fact their teachers encouraged it! Following the success of the elective program in the 2011-2012 school year, course choices were expanded to offer greater opportunities for students to explore new interests or pursue a passion. The result was eight inspired courses: CSI-Mayfield, Poem, Story and Performance, Pop/Rock Band, Mayfield Players Drama, Yearbook, Dance, Book Gurus and Fashion 3.0 all designed and implemented to awaken and perhaps challenge the unique talents of each student with the support of a collaborative environment.

While the elective classes on their own encouraged individual creativity, they also engaged the whole school.

The dance elective showcased a ballet at the Christmas concert, and the Poem, Story and Performance elective set the mood for Halloween with a surprise reading of “The Highwayman” at Morning Prayer. The Fashion 3.0 elective used their new skills to organize a school uniform photo shoot for Pinterest as well as manage costumes for

the 8th grade play “Footloose,” while the Rock Band elective provided live music for every “Footloose” performance and even introduced its own singer/songwriter at the Spring Concert with an original composition. Moving forward more elective choices have been introduced for the 2013-2014 school year, including Biomimicry: Nature Inspired Design, Music Technology and iPhoneography: Using iPhones and iPads to Create Photographic Art. When the goal is exploring new things and finding a student’s unique potential, a little anarchy on a Thursday can be a good thing.

Earth Day 2013 | Appreciation, Education, Activism MJS students honored Earth Day 2013 by spending a day learning more about how to better care for our planet and those who live on it. The morning started with the 8th grade leading a Recycle Relay with grades K-2, then students in grades 2-8 participated in field trips to various local sites. Focusing on the themes of appreciation, education and activism each field trip was planned with age-appropriate activities and the opportunity for students to not only learn about current conservation efforts, but also think about the valuable resources we must continue to protect so they may be enjoyed by generations to come.

Grades 2-4 visited the Los Angeles Arboretum, Topanga State Park and the Sepulveda Wildlife Basin exploring the protected native plants and wildlife. The fifth grade had quite a lesson in waste management and recycling at the Puente Hills Landfill and Water Reclamation Plant, and the sixth grade toured the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant that features a Japanese Garden irrigated with effluent from the plant and a lake filled with treated water. The seventh and eighth grade field trips combined education with service as students headed into

the Arroyo Seco to pick up trash, help spread mulch and learn about groundwater rehabilitation at the Monk Hill Treatment Plant. Although the day took students in many different directions, a follow up session during Friday morning student families allowed someone from each grade level to share his or her experience with the others.

A Successful Experiment | 7th Grade Culminating Projects

How do we best assess what students have learned over the course of a semester or entire year? Sounds simple, but this question challenged seventh grade teachers, Mary Anne Amitin (English), Mark Pattullo (Science) and Nicole Sanders (History) to imagine something beyond the traditional final exam. Something better. Considering all three subjects at this grade level focus on process skills and making connections, the teachers wanted a more meaningful and authentic way to test those skills. One question turned into many: what do we really mean by learning? Is it memorizing facts? Is it the ability to draw on knowledge to write a competent essay? The answer: all these things and more. The better assessment: a cross-curricular culminating project.

The 7th grade Culminating Project required three components: a persuasive essay, a visual or performance piece and a formal presentation before teachers and classmates. To keep students focused the starting point

was the Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino.

Within the galleries, gardens and special exhibits, the students found the inspiration for their projects such as the Fathers of Astronomy, the 13th Amendment or Japanese Gardens, and then let their imagination and developing skills bring it all together. The results were impressive.

They did research with primary sources, defended a thesis with evidence in an essay, creatively showcased their work in a visual interpretation such as a 3D model, short film, sculpture, diary or map, and communicated all of it in a short presentation so everyone could learn a little something. With creative presentations such as an interactive explanation of light bulb energy needs, a rap song describing the Heliocentric Theory, a live dramatization of a slave auction and a home video by Galileo himself, the projects engaged students in both process and meaning.

The final grade: we’d give it an A.

In the spring of 2012, Eileen McDevitt, SHCJ, Director of the Holy Child Network of Schools, asked the faculty and staff of all Holy Child Schools to “Be Bold” in the tradition of Cornelia Connelly’s progressive vision for education. As an academic administrator, I could understand this concept and felt that inspiring the teachers to ask themselves what the students needed was the most important thing to do. One of the central features in current education trends is to allow students to engage in their learning process. In other words, the students themselves should make their own meaning, find their own solutions, and do their own thinking, etc. This core idea spawned a year of professional growth for our teachers that began with the 4Cs Institute and included an opportunity to collaborate and experiment together in an “Innovator’s Challenge.”

We know that all change requires taking a leap of faith, jumping off into the unknown. Inspiration is what fuels a person to be able to make a leap. The act of asking teachers to ‘be bold’ and try something new or different

necessitates the need to inspire teachers — which, in my opinion, is the single most important thing an academic administrator can do for his or her staff. And inspiration does not come without work. We began the 2012-2013 year with a wildfire collection of ideas and tools that each teacher could put in his or her toolbox in order to promote this kind of fresh learning. The teachers boldly embraced the mission of 21st century education. They took the leap and began innovating with renewed passion for teaching.

Much of the change work that we asked of our teachers involved coming at teaching by first assessing classroom environment and management in a way that promotes more collaboration between students. When teachers reflect on how to make curriculum relevant to students there are always many questions, but the undiscovered country provides more payoffs than the well-worn path. The students are rewarded as a consequence of this reflection. Living through the questions finds teachers working on content, developing rich new lessons and using strategies they may never have thought to use before. This is the creative work of a teacher. I am proud of the accomplishments of each individual teacher and his or her renewed commitment towards teaching for the modern world and its demands.

Our Heritage Bringing Cornelia Connelly’s Story to Life Without a doubt the legacy of Cornelia Connelly is alive and well at Holy Child Schools across the country. At Mayfield Junior School Cornelia’s image is one of the first things you see as you enter our front office and watches over meetings in our Parent Resource Room. Students celebrate Founders’ Day in October and her birthday in January, and her words adorn many documents and publications including this magazine. We know she cared so deeply about educating children in an atmosphere of love and joy that she established an order of Sisters, the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, who shared her commitment. To understand the unique spirit of Holy Child Schools, one must know Cornelia.

Beginning in 2009, a group of Holy Child educators (including MJS second grade teacher Beth Dorr), at the request of Eileen McDevitt, SHCJ, Director of the Holy Child Network of Schools, were tasked with writing a curriculum that would further explore Cornelia’s history, spirituality and philosophy on education. The results of their efforts have been enlightening and far-reaching. After sorting and examining countless documents and artifacts, and even traveling as far as England for their research, this dedicated team, known as the Cornelia Connelly Curriculum Committee, with the help of Holy Child archivists, has created an amazing online resource library and developed an age-appropriate curriculum to bring Cornelia’s story to life.

The curriculum, which will be introduced at Mayfield in the 2013-2014 school year, provides specific grade level sample lesson plans that offer one of Cornelia’s quotes as a focal point and include coloring books, word puzzles and art projects for the younger students continuing on with historical connections and service projects for the older students. The online resource library offers access to primary sources, photographs and supplemental documents, and Wiki sites are in place to allow teachers to share ideas and to continue the collaborative spirit begun by the Curriculum committee. The goal of the curriculum is to assist teachers and students in learning about Cornelia’s life – her words, values and legacy. Her unique story, educational vision and deep belief in God’s love create an understanding of what it means to be a part of the Holy Child community.

Flashback to the 1980s with “Footloose the Musical”

The Class of 2013 presented “Footloose the Musical” April 19-21 to sell out crowds! Under the direction of drama teacher, Lisa Byrne, two casts shared the spotlight to bring the story of Ren and Ariel, and the community of a small town called Bowmont to life. This year the 8th graders, along with sharing the responsibilities of both cast and crew, participated in the process from the very beginning. The show featured student choreography, original designs for set pieces, costumes and projections. In addition our very own Mayfield Rock Band took on the challenge of playing live music throughout the show.

Content, Collaboration and Connection : Spring Concert Highlights the Instrumental Music Program With a nostalgic nod to movie music history, students in grades 3-7 presented Spring Concert 2013: Mayfield Goes to the Movies in May as part of the annual Spring Arts Celebration. From the 4th grade band playing the theme to “Jaws” to 5th and 6th grade strings sounding suave with a little James Bond, the concert highlighted the strengths of the instrumental music program.

Designed to provide an overall creative experience, the music program combines basic skills learning with an understanding of historical and cultural connections while encouraging appreciation and self-expression.

Music is included in the schedule beginning in kindergarten with students learning fundamentals including melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, meter, and basic musical notation and form as they progress through 2nd grade. Students in grades 3-4 are introduced to their own instruments for the first time, performing on the recorder and understanding the importance of care and maintenance of their instrument. Fourth graders are offered a choice of string or band instruments, which they will commit to for at least the next three years. In the Middle School, grades 5-6 continue to take classes weekly to develop their progression of fundamental skills into a proficient competency in music and performance-based skills. Seventh and eighth grade students have the option

of choosing an elective course in music, which meets once per week. This year the course was a Pop/Rock Band Ensemble. The elective encouraged an in-depth study of music in popular culture, music technology, and acoustics as well as performance experience.

Overall the arts curriculum provides students with the knowledge and inspiration to embrace music, theater, and art as subjects that fill their souls and let them shine.

This goal materialized with the closing performances of the Spring Concert featuring three original student compositions.

Honors Choir Share Their Voices for Upcoming Film At the invitation of Mayfield parent, music producer and composer, Julian Raymond, the MJS Honors Choir recently traveled to Capitol Records in Hollywood to record for the soundtrack of an upcoming film about musician, Glen Campbell and his struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The students’ voices are slated for an opening scene in which Glen Campbell is watching old videos from his childhood and can’t recall any memory of what he is watching.

Julian Raymond wrote the song with the choir’s voices in mind. Mayfield’s Music Director, Allison Merryman was delighted for the students to have such a wonderful opportunity. “It is a bittersweet song and a challenge for our choir to sing a song with a sad quality. Due to the fact that we [often] sing religious or sacred hymns, or fun pop songs, it was definitely a new experience for them to sing a melancholy melody without lyrics - just oohs and ahhs for background ambiance.”

Events Benefit 2013: Mayfield is Out of This World!

While we all know that Mayfield Junior School is outstanding, the Benefit on April 27, 2013 made it very clear that “Mayfield is Out of This World!” Benefit Chairs Ellen Hatch and Mary Ann Lanchantin Smith ’75 and their spectacular constellation of committee members created a fantastic event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Guests were greeted by characters from Star Wars and transported into a whimsical and elegant vision of the future. The silent auction was back on campus this year with plenty of amazing items and packages up for bid during the cocktail hour. The competition was intense for items such as an original framed print from Pasadena artist, Mayfield’s own Kenton Nelson, to tickets to “The Voice,” and a meet and greet with baseball star Albert Pujols. The planets were also aligned for an astronomically successful live auction, where the bidding was high for condos in Deer Valley and Mauna Kea, and a house on Walloon Lake, Michigan, as well as a once in a lifetime opportunity to name a racehorse and attend the Breeders’ Cup. Then the Paddle Raise was over the moon with over $43,000 raised for upgrades to the school’s outdoor activity space! Unfortunately there could only be one delighted raffle winner for the beautiful “Globo” necklace generously donated by Meshell Sohl-Holdo and Mimi et Cie. A Benefit that is “out of this world” needs heavenly food and The Kitchen for Exploring Foods was happy to oblige with a

fabulously delicious family style meal. As the sun went down DJMaxx had everyone on their feet and dancing until the stars filled the sky.

Benefit 2013: Mayfield is Out of This World! and all of the activities and events that set the stage, were the result of months of hard work by the Benefit Committee.

Thanks to their dedication and to the generosity of all of the patrons, donors to the live and silent auction, event underwriters and members of the MJS community, the evening exceeded all goals and raised over $298,000 to support Mayfield Junior School’s educational programs.* Now that is truly “Out of this world!”

With the success of the Downtown Reception and alumni fundraising efforts throughout the year, Alumni Annual Giving contributions more than doubled and exceeded the 2012 -13 goal.

On a balmy evening in May, MJS alumni business professionals gathered at trendy Le Ka Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles for our Alumni Business Professionals Downtown Reception. Hosted by Alumni Council President Walter Conn ’81, over 40 alumni ranging from the Class of 1956 to 2003 attended this regional event to reconnect and learn about supporting their alma mater. Joe Gill, Headmaster, and Geoff Bland, Chair of the Board of Trustees, provided insight and personal reflections about the current success of the school and Mayfield’s commitment to continued growth and excellence while

keeping true to its Holy Child heritage. Walter Conn, speaking as both an alum and current parent, highlighted the many benefits today’s students receive as a result of Annual Giving. He urged those in attendance to give back to the School by participating in the annual campaign and announced to the group that an anonymous alumni donor was offering to match new gifts received at the event. This year Mayfield Junior School challenged the alumni body to double what they raised last year. With true MJS spirit, funds raised as a result of this event, helped meet the challenge and surpass the Alumni Annual Giving goal for 2012 -2013.

On May 24, a small group of 1950s alumni reunited on South Euclid Avenue for a luncheon and campus tour. The alums were greeted by 8th Graders, Jonathan Partamian and Trejon Shelton, who escorted them to Hodgins Library for lunch with Headmaster Joe Gill. Afterwards, the group attended the annual Spring Concert, visited with students and teachers and enjoyed a tour of the campus, led by seventh graders Troy Bonde and Carmen Mascarenhas. The afternoon ended in Mrs. Ireland’s art classroom with refreshments and an opportunity to share memories over yearbooks and old photos.

Truly a memorable day for all!

Mothers of Alumni Lenten Mass Mayfield Junior School Mothers of Alumni returned to campus in March for a Lenten Reflection Mass and Reception on March 26. Bishop Gordon Bennett, SJ, who is a former trustee of Mayfield and a former principal of Loyola High School, presided at the Mass.

The homily focused on self-reflection, reminding the assembly that, “We have not control over the length of our lives, but we do have control over the depth of our lives.” The Mass was a lovely reunion for many whose children had attended Mayfield anywhere from the 1970s to 2012, and was a chance to share a few memories and see how much the school has grown. Student cantors from the class of 2015, Marie Bland, Elisa Gonzalez, Alexa Schlaerth and Annie Tighe, delighted the group with their gift of singing throughout the Mass. The event was a wonderful reminder of the enduring sense of community Mayfield Junior School has, even for those who have not been on campus for many years.
