Our Mission: Mayfield Junior School, a Catholic independent school founded and sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, implements the philosophy of the Holy Child Schools which is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person. We are committed to the religious and educational development of each child and to maintaining a sense of community and family spirit that welcomes people of diverse backgrounds. At Mayfield each child is challenged to reach his or her potential. We encourage our students to respond to the needs of our time with compassion, integrity and confidence in God and in their own gifts.
Our Educational Vision: Guided by our Holy Child heritage, we provide a distinctive educational experience that balances tradition and innovation in an intellectually challenging and creative environment. Q&A with Joe Sciuto, Head of School 1. When you think back on the 2020-21 school year, what is the first word that comes to mind? Revolutionary. We needed to adapt and find different ways to do our work, and from that came exciting new ways to teach our children.
2. What was your favorite memory from the 2020-21 year? Graduation was inspiring. After being in a remote environment for so long, it was amazing to be able to have it in person. These kids were so resilient and triumphed over so many challenges in their 7th and 8th grade years, so to be able to come together as a community and show them how proud we are of them was the best way to end the school year.
3. What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Mayfield Junior School community? It is so joyful. During these challenging times, our current families, grandparents, alumni, and past parents all came together and showed their support of the school. Everyone loves MJS and I am privileged to be part of such a strong, vibrant and supportive community.
4. Can you describe how you felt when the Kindergarten students came to campus for in-person learning for the first time? Proud. I was proud for so many reasons. I was proud of our faculty and staff for all of the work they did to prepare for the transition to on-campus learning. I was proud of our families that trusted us with their children and respected us to follow all of the protocols. I was immensely proud of the children. They were all so happy, marched right into campus, and quickly became leaders of the student community by being the first ones back on campus. They truly led the way. It was awesome.
5. What would you like to say to the donors who are listed in this Annual Report? Thank you! Without the support of our donors, especially these past two years, we would not have been able to continue our Holy Child education as well as we did. We are fortunate to have donors who care so much about this community and want what is best for our Mayfield children.
6. What are you looking forward to for the future of MJS? Continuing to provide this very unique Holy Child education under an extraordinary mission and seeing the future growth of our campus and programs. It is an exciting time at MJS.

COVID-19 Expenses Breakdown The 2020-21 school year was the most expensive in Mayfield Junior School history as the COVID-19 pandemic challenged schools in new and unexpected ways. Adapting the school and creating a safe learning environment for our students placed strain on the school’s financial resources but was feasible thanks to the strong support of our community. Thank you to our donors for helping us tackle these challenges head on and provide a robust Holy Child education. An Investment in People Mayfield’s largest investment is in its faculty and staff—salaries and benefits represented 71% of the annual operating budget. Our people make MJS a special place to learn and were critical in the successful navigation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health and safety protocols mandated physical distancing and smaller cohort sizes for on-campus learning. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Mayfield community, MJS had the resources to invest in more faculty and staff members to meet these standards and bring students back to campus for in-person learning early in the year. The 2020-21 school year spent $623,893 more on salaries and compensation than the previous year with an additional 12 full-time faculty/staff members added to the MJS team. Thank you to the teachers and staff for your dedication to each student and to whole child education.

Established to honor Mayfield Junior School’s founding year, the 1931 Circle recognizes donors who have made a leadership gift to the school. Members of the 1931 Circle provide substantial financial support to the school and make a significant impact on Mayfield’s ability to fulfill its mission.
