APPROACH / I chose my favorite song—Dust It Off. One night, I listened to it until I fell asleep. The loop was vague but I still could hear it in my dream. It was a dream about being in Amsterdam. Even though I have never been to Amsterdam, the dream was so clear and real. My goal is to tell the viewer what my dream is about while complementing the rhythm and the lyric with expressions that I am half awake and still dreaming simultaneously.

APPROACH / I chose “The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)” to improve its public image. The ATF leaves a negative impression with many Americans because of events such as what happened in Waco, Texas. To make it feel more trust-worthy and still stay as a serious governmental organization, I decided to use a typeface which looks futuristic but also serious to match with the overall military look and feel.

APPROACH / Miranda July is not only a filmmaker, but also a performer, a writer, and an artist. Her film, Me and You and Everyone We Know won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a Special Jury Prize at Sundance. Her style is often described as off-the-wall, or unconventional. To create the film festival, I found quirky elements to express sadness, while using a bright color palette to express that life is full of color as long as we are brave enough to change.

APPROACH / I went to different cities around the Bay Area. Whether I was at an event, a venue or an art show there was always some kind of trash or things that remained after the events were over. I took some of that home and made a journal called “Things We Left Behind.” The route I took between all these events became the visual motif. I tried to figure out the story behind each of the items, and express my feeling by using different typography treatments in each story.

APPROACH / I found that if people want to get a tattoo or find tattoo artists, they usually go to the tattoo shop's website or look through their social media such as Instagram or Facebook. There are so many ways to find a tattoo artist. T@ttoo is an app that connects people to the tattoo artist community. Users can look at the inspiration, the artists’ portfolio, and communicate within the app.

APPROACH / This is a project I did during my internship at Ethera Creative. I worked with the creative director, Penny Lorber, to find the best brand character to represent Timeless Medicine. Ethera Creative developed a comprehensive business structure. We applied branding strategies into a visual system that helped the shop to shape a better experience for their customers.

APPROACH / There are three projects in this chapter. The first one is a promotional piece for an exhibition, Typeface through Interface. I wrote a story metaphorically about how the typefaces evolve just like our universe. The second one is a title sequence for the movie, Delivery Man. I showed main movie scenes by using illustrations along with some funny movements to convey the comedy. The third one is a story about of controlling their temper. I pers just like different kinds temper boundaries, we can lead

APPROACH / IKEP is a brand I created that encourages people to keep the environment healthier by keeping their smartphone longer. Not everyone has the courage to fix their phone by themselves, but IKEP provides some tips and actually demonstrates how to fix it easily.Â

PROBLEM. THE LIFE OF A SMARTPHONE IS ONLY ABOUT 24 MONTHS FOR AVERAGE USERS. DUE TO TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS, PEOPLE ARE CHANGING THEIR PHONES MORE FREQUENTLY. IKEP is an MFA thesis project that is devoted to find ways to help people buy fewer new mobile devices. IKEP also addresses problems of the environment and consumer relations to arouse environmental awareness. We want to keep used phones out of landfills. We aim to keep on top of what’s happening with modern technology and its impact on our environment. We hope to keep the environment healthy.
