Project | Imoogi Temple

Location | Gangnam, South Korea

Description | This project was designed to be a theoretical “temple”, meant as a study into the human experience of circulation in a large tower, and breaking away from traditional approaches of said circulation. This design was a personal exploration into grasshopper to create coiling towers, bringing explorers through three different swirling masses with terraces as breaks. The design was inspired by the mythical beast, “Imoogi”, described in Korean culture to be an adolescent dragon that takes it’s flight into adulthood once it has reached 1000 years of age.

Project | Son Tower

Location | Gangnam, South Korea

Contributors | Maya Schiltz, Kevin Toudeka

Description | Son Tower is a high rise partnership project designed to look as if a hand was reaching down from above. This concept was inspired from the program, a mixed-use skincare pharmaceutical office and plastic surgery clinic. This is the first of 2 iterations of this program design.

The preliminary form was shaped from a hand reaching down and cradling the site. It was then abstracted to form two towers making up the main hand with fingers and thumbs, delicatly in tervining into each other to leave a gap but still appears as if it is one tower.

The next step was cutting apart this form to create terraces and a programtic split to suit privacy needs of the program within.

After the cuts were set, the bottom of most sec tions were reformed to maximize the site usage, as well as recombine, as the inner corner of the site led to the backside alley of another building and thus did not need a opening to access.

After the form was finalized, vertical circulation cores were added to allow transportation between towers, as well as primary strucutral cores to hold the tower

Finally, a curtain was overlayed on top and formed to appear like fingers wrapping around the form, both for further structure and to work as a facade system for privacy and sun shading.
