ARCHITECTURAL WORKS

Infrastructure is our largest yet most over-looked public space. Necessitating billions of dollars of investment every year, it is typically designed to meet the most basic functional requirements only. In the last five years, architects, urban designers, landscape architects and planners have come together to reimagine what infrastructure could be in the 21st century. This is generating a barrage of new and interesting design work and has resulted in new theories of urbanism based on large scale ecologies, economies, and flows (e.g. infrastructural urbanism, landscape urbanism, combinatory urbanism). Next generation infrastructure has the potential to be multi-functional, socially-conscious, technologically advanced, environmentally productive, adaptable, and truly public. Here in the southwest, we have the great advantage of having a test case happening right in our own backyard: I-11.

One of the more difficult challenges for the school, the light is bounced down the side of the tower, bounced again underneath the atrium which is coated in a reflective surface and into the atrium. The light then bounces of the many surfaces of the rotationary programs and illuminates the space while also provide a moment of awe when look up at the sky through these large masses.

Large glass windows look out on to the atrium connection each program visually with one another. The spaces take on the same type of tessellated surface as the volumes themselves giving purpose to their shape as it relates to activities being preformed inside. The spaces reflect light back into the atrium as well.
