An Historical Welcome

W

elcome to this year’s Henries where we not only celebrate and recognise the best greeting card ranges of the last year, but also a glorious centenary of the Greeting Card Association! A 100 years ago, back in 1919, Britain, and indeed the world, had only just emerged from the most horrendous unnecessary loss of human life in history with the four year long, ‘Great War’. And then, as if to add to the misery in that year, a deadly flu epidemic killed more people globally than even the First World War itself! So, on first inspection, it would seem odd tonight we are celebrating the centenary of this tragic year. But, something good did emerge from all this gloom. 1919 marked the formation of the UK Greeting Card Association, an organisation conceived to promote the sending and giving of greeting cards. They may not be able to cure all the ills of society, but no one would dispute that the greeting card sending habit that the GCA has helped to perpetuate over the last century has indeed had a positive role in increasing human happiness and contentment. Greeting cards, of course, existed well before 1919, as most of you in this room tonight will know of the role played by Sir Henry Cole, the namesake of these awards, who pioneered the first commercial Christmas card back in the 1840s, some 80 years prior to the GCA’s formation. And we should not forget the role of American giants, notably Joyce Hall of Hallmark and Irving Stone of American Greetings, to our fabulous greeting card heritage. But in the UK, in recent years in particular, it has been the GCA that has done so much to help the UK card industry thrive and prosper. Whether it has been behind the scenes, (winning the fight for no extra postal charges for square cards) or fighting negative publicity (with regard to charity cards) or

A Special Thanks to… The Henries Awards only exist due to a number of companies and individuals, whose commitment to this event we would like to say a ‘big thank you’. Firstly to our wonderful award category sponsors for making The Henries possible, but also to The Art File’s Lucie Whitehead for the magnificent GCA Centenary design for the glorious Henries Invitations that were beautifully printed by Windles with board supplied by GF Smith; to House of Cards for the keepsake real vintage card ‘placecards’, themed table props and photobooth; to Windles and its creative supremo Ian Kear-Bertie for the inventively designed and produced menu; Pigment Productions for the Higher or Lower competition; Belly Button Designs for the Adornment Station, plus Eurowrap, Hallmark, The Art File, Woodmansterne, LB Warehousing, Simon Elvin, Loxleys, Amscan and Abacus for their generosity in donating some great raffle prizes.

encouraging and helping developing fresh new talent that is the lifeblood of the industry. It is certainly a centenary worth celebrating! But the Greeting Card Association, Progressive Greetings and of course, The Henries, are only what they are thanks to all of you in this fabulous room tonight. It is your passion, creativity and commitment, whether supplier, publisher or retailer, that make our UK greeting card industry the envy of the world. So let’s all make it a centenary celebration to remember tonight!

The man behind the name Why The Henries? The Henries are named after Sir Henry Cole – so who was he?

The UK greeting card industry has a lot to thank a certain Victorian philanthropist, inventor and culturist who went by the name of Henry Cole. Not only did he introduce the first ever commercially produced Christmas card, but was also a pioneer of the Penny Post (which safeguarded a quick and efficient postal service) and was director of the V&A Museum which remains a source of inspiration of many of today’s greeting card creatives. With these ‘claims to fame’ he was the ideal namesake of the greeting card industry’s product awards - The Henries. It was back in 1843, finding himself too busy to write letters to all his acquaintances at Christmas time, that Henry Cole, commissioned his friend, John Calcott Horsley, a British narrative painter to design a card. This significant Christmas card features a central hand-coloured image of a family party in progress, above the greeting ‘A merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You’ and is flanked by two much simpler images of the poor being tended. A batch of 1,000 of the cards - only 5” x 3” in size and postcard format - were printed on a lithograph stone and then hand-coloured by a professional colourer. Henry sent some of the cards to his family and friends including his personal messages of goodwill for the festive season, but the remainder of the cards he sold through a stationers shop in London’s Old Bond Street for one shilling (5p) each. There are now only be around only 10 of the original 1,000 Henry Cole cards in existence - many of the cards were destroyed by the puritans of the day – known as Muggletonians - as the image depicted children drinking wine, which was considered inappropriate to Victorian sensibilities. Thankfully, one of the original cards is safe and not too far away! In December 2005 one of original cards (that was sent to a Miss Tripsack, a close friend of the poetess Elizabeth Barrett-Browning) came up for auction at an obscure auction house in Devizes in Wiltshire. The auctioneer, Alan Aldridge, kept a promise that he had made to PG’s Jakki Brown that he would not publicise the card being up for auction to the American market. (A card Sir Henry had sent to his grandmother had been sold via the same auction house to a private US investor only a few years previously, for £22K). Determined to safeguard this precious treasure of UK greeting card history and keep it within the nation, PG’s Jakki Brown was successful in her bid for this very special Christmas card. Sir Henry’s legacy continues strongly, with hundreds of card publishers, thousands of retailers and a strong band of dedicated suppliers perpetuating the wonderful habit of buying and sending greeting cards that are reverred throughout the world.

More about Henry

Henry Cole was awarded a knighthood for his work on The Great Exhibition by Queen Victoria in 1875. He was often referred to in the press as Old King Cole. He was known to have the close personal backing of the Queen, and especially of the Prince Consort, who when he needed a facilitator for one of his key projects, reportedly used to say: "We must have steam, get Cole." As well as being a philanthropic civil servant, Sir Henry adopted the pseudonym of Felix Summerly for his more commercial activities. These included designing a prize-winning teapot that was manufactured by Minton. As Felix Summerly, he also wrote a series of children's books, including A book of stories from The home treasury; A hand-book for the architecture, sculpture, tombs, and decorations of Westminster Abbey (1859); An Alphabet of Quadrupeds (1844); and The most delectable history of Reynard the Fox.

Left: PG’s Jakki Brown fulfilled a dream by successfully bidding for one of the few remaining examples of the world’s first commercially produced Christmas cards. Who Judged The Henries? The entire responsibility of judging the product entries to this year’s Henries lay in the collective hands of the judging panel, made up entirely of retailers. The Henries 2019 Judging Process

The preparation

Below: Utility’s Steph Lloyd considering the mounted entries.

The Henries are free of charge to enter meaning it is open to all. Over 14,000 greeting cards, sheets of giftwrap and giftbags were submitted from some 200 different UK publishers for The Henries. All entries are treated equally, whether they are sent in by a multinational company, a new start-up one-man band publisher and everything in between Each entry is logged onto the computer and assigned a number. One card design from each entry is retained for archive purposes while the other cards in each submission are mounted onto their own large display board. A label is affixed to the top of each board that prominently features a distinct entry number as well as the RRP(s) of the mounted cards. To overcome any preconceived ideas judges might have had of publishers, the brand and company name of each submission for the product entries are concealed. In the case of The Lynn Tait Most Promising Young Designer or Artist category those entering were invited to submit their own readymounted boards if they wished. For the Henry Cole Classic award, publishers were asked for some substantiating text, which demonstrates how and why the range has stood the test of time.

Which ranges were eligible to enter?

Entering The Henries 2019 was open to all UK publishers, as well as UK-based distributors of card publishers from overseas. Publishers were invited to enter ranges that had been launched since August 1 2018 or new designs that had been added to ongoing ranges. The Henry Cole Classic award is slightly different in that this is for ranges that have stood the test of time and therefore the onus is on the heritage and evolution of the brand rather than just the new designs in the range. Publishers could enter as many categories as they wished, with as many entries in each category as they wanted. Above: This year’s Henries saw a record number of entries being submitted – and they had their own guard dog!

The judging process

The judging for all the product categories, as well as Most Promising Young Designer or Artist, took place on a single day, in offices, theatre rehearsal rooms as well as The Depot Bar, all of which are adjacent to PG’s London offices. Above: David Bowie The criteria for judging were: was a popular choice l Quality of Design for The Henries’ judges. l Quality of print, production and manufacture l Appropriateness for the market sector at which it is aimed l Value for money All entries were put on display category by category. The judges considered all entries in each category, individually selecting the five entries they deemed to be the best in each category. Judging forms were completed by writing the corresponding entry numbers, in order of merit, in the relevant boxes on the form. Points were then awarded accordingly by the adjudication team; five points being assigned to the entries each judge felt was the best in the category down to one point for the fifth choice. The points from all the judges’ forms were then correlated to arrive at the winner and five other finalists. In celebration of 2019 being the centenary of the UK Greeting Card Association (GCA), The Henries 2019 will take on a ‘Hundred Years of Greeting Cards’ theme. The winners will all be revealed at The Henries awards, an evening event taking place on Thursday October 3 at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. Top left: Two Nigels. AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

From overturning a ban on greeting cards during the Second World War to championing greeting cards in the media, education and government circles, as well as being always there as a central hub for members, the GCA has more than a hundred reasons to celebrate its centenary. Left: The GCA ‘presidents men’ in 1972.

Celebrating A Century

T

he GCA celebrates its centenary this year with membership at its highest point since it began in 1919. With nearly 500 members, a strong roster of suppliers as associate members and an increasing retail membership base (the association now represents over 15,000 retail rooftops cross the UK), the GCA is a united voice for the UK greeting card industry. “Despite the momentous changes experienced over the passage of the last ten decades – on societal, political, economic, retail, aesthetic and technological fronts - the heartbeat of the GCA remains the same today as it was a hundred years ago – to promote and protect the wonderful British tradition of sending and giving greeting cards,” commented Amanda Fergusson, ceo of the GCA. “We owe so much to the early pioneers of the GCA as well as those who were instrumental in the development of the association and the industry at large. The British public spent over £1.7 billion on greeting cards in the last year. That is not something we should take for granted, and certainly something the GCA and its current members are keen to work together to perpetuate”.

10

THE HENRIES AWARDS 2019

The wartime effort What must rank as arguably the GCA’s greatest triumph, and one which highlights the true importance of greeting cards, was over-turning the ban imposed early at the start of the Second World War that no greeting cards could be published in order to conserve paper. The Association at the time made the strongest possible representation to Lord Beaverbrook, then Minister for Supply, on the grounds that the morale of the fighting forces, as well as that of the general public, would be negatively affected by the ban. Taking this on board, the government rescinded the ban, sending the message that “Greeting cards are considered essential to the war effort.” What’s more, the GCA was given the responsibility of allocating the paper and board to those in the card trade right up until rationing restrictions were lifted after the end of the war. Left: Lord Beaverbrook.

Right: Amanda Fergusson, ceo of the GCA, on the BBC 1 Breakfast programme promoting Christmas cards.

AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

From Russia with love What few modern cardies probably don't know is that the GCA was involved in its very own ‘Cold War’. Back in the late 1970s, the Soviet Union, as it was then, in a convoluted part-payment deal with an American computer company, was dumping millions and millions of ultra-cheap Christmas cards on to the UK, undermining the whole stability of the British greeting card market. At that time, the Soviet Union was officially ‘Atheist’ and Christianity was heavily proscribed, so the GCA Council at the time felt this was not only economically damaging to the UK card industry, but morally bankrupt to boot. The GCA’s Antidumping Application spawned a lengthy debate in the House of Commons and achieved high profile in the media, culminating in the Secretary for Trade demanding that these Russian imports cease.

Keeping everyone posted The GCA’s symbiotic relationship with Royal Mail has seen on both sides over the many years as well as a continued drive to find mutually beneficial solutions to potential problems. Now taken for granted, the ‘envelope symbol’ that has graced the back of most cards in the UK over the last 13 years since PiP (Pricing in Proportion) came into being, to signal to the consumer the postage required – denoting whether the size of the card would require a ‘standard letter’ or ‘large letter’ post would never have come about had it not been for a series of impassioned meetings the GCA held with the Royal Mail to minimise consumer confusion over the change and to avoid people receiving a greeting card with the wrong postage incurring a surcharge. Another important element in these high profile discussions with a Royal Mail executive was to ensure that square cards were not penalised through being subjected to a higher postal costs, as they are

Showing an initiative

elsewhere in the world, with the GCA stressing that the diversity of shapes piques consumer interest in greeting cards. Having come up with the symbols, the GCA has made these widely available to all interested parties. Left: The PIP logos that the GCA instigated.

Sending out the right message The UK greeting card industry has generated many £millions for good causes over the years, largely at no risk to the charities, through agreements with card publishers and/or retailers to produce cards, with a proportion of the selling price being donated to the charity in question. Sensing that there was room for clarity over the statements made on the cards and/or the boxes, the GCA (driven by Paul Woodmansterne, the president at the time), worked with the Charities Commission to come up with some specific wording which made it clear to the public just how much of the price they paid would reach the charity. A similar clear-thinking approach has been taken by the GCA on environmental statements included on the rear of cards, working with WWF to come up with some guidance for publishers on relaying the eco-credentials of the board on which the cards are published. And then there has been all the work on barcoding and price coding, overcoming chaos by publishers and retailers working together under the GCA umbrella to gain some consistency.

Right: Sharon Little, who was the ceo of the GCA for 20 years (until last year) at a Thinking of You Week consumer activation outside Kings Cross station.

In the early years of the GCA, the onus was very much on growing awareness of greeting cards per se, highlighting their very existence and supporting the relatively few retailers (compared to today) that stocked them. The Association even back in the 1940s, placed adverts in regional newspapers imploring the public to ‘Scatter Sunshine with Greeting Cards’, though by the 1970s the PR budget went onto another level. Impressive (though very costly) events were staged, involving famous personalities to promote the major card sending events, as well as funding competitions, such as ‘Father of the Year’ in regional newspapers. Achieved on a shoestring budget, the establishment of Thinking of You Week (the late September initiative, now in its sixth year which encourages cards to be sent to show care and support), Festive Friday (instigated to promote early Christmas card sending) and this year’s Instagram challenge, #cardtokeep (which highlights the emotional attachment we have to cards we have received) have all served to amplify the importance of card sending. This activity has also extended into education, with the GCA-commissioned Hurrah for Ra lesson plan for teachers, on a gratitude theme, achieving mighty impressive download rates and has been ranked highly in educational circles.

The Henries 2019 Finalists

The Lynn Tait Most Promising Young Designer Or Artist Award Open to: All card designers under 35 on August 1 2018. Vici-Jane Blenkharn, founder of Artcadia: “During my teens I volunteered at a local Victorian town’s print shop, where I learnt the art of typesetting, gaining invaluable experience in letterpress printing on various presses. I later trained on the job as a graphic designer, all the while collecting antique printing presses. I founded Artcadia in 2009, where I merged my two skills in design and print to create bespoke letterpress event stationery, and in 2018 I designed a range of greeting cards and stationery for retail. Currently, Artcadia’s cards are now stocked in over 70 retailers worldwide.”

Mike Davis, founder of Some Ink Nice: “Hello, my name’s Mike. This is me [arrow pointing to photo of me grinning like a simpleton]. I’m an artist, colourist and publisher of greeting cards going under the banner Some Ink Nice (at PG Live, this involved standing under an actual Some Ink Nice banner (which was a co-incidence, BTW)). I began publishing this year, handdrawing animal designs with bold, graphic-inspired inks. The goal is to create cards that people actually want to keep, because I know from experience that cards tucked away can help rekindle old friendships, years later - and that seems the best use of artwork I can think of.”

Amy Eastland, senior designer for Woodmansterne and The Proper Mail Company: “10 years designing greeting cards have flown by, I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun! I feel very fortunate to call my ‘work’ my passion and I have been lucky enough to do so working at some of the UK’s most innovative and market leading publishers. I still get beams of pride when I see my cards on shelves, and if my hands are covered in paint and my desk strewn with pencil shavings then you will always find me with a smile on my face, busily bringing colour into my life through my designs.” CATEGORY SPONSOR

My aim is to create purposeful paper goods for people with stories to tell. I launched in June 2017 while on my maternity leave as a creative outlet from my new identity as a mother. My ambition is to grow distribution of Type and Story to make it an international paper goods brand that is synonymous with beautiful and well considered design, reflective of today’s mood and in a visual language that speaks to consumers who appreciate products with soul, story and meaning.”

Laura Harvey, founder of Paper Plane: “Since founding Paper Plane in 2014, I have helped grow the business from a part-time project run from home to a limited company employing both me and my partner Jack, with stockists including Oliver Bonas and Urban Outfitters. My 12 years as a magazine designer have helped give me an eclectic and versatile style, as shown in the many varied card and gift ranges I have designed for Paper Plane. My designs are inspired by real relationships and observations of the world, pastel colour palettes, ontrend themes, botanical prints and my love of houseplants.”

Louise Mulgrew, founder of Louise Mulgrew Designs: “Louise Mulgrew Designs is fastapproaching its fourth birthday! I create whimsical, illustrated greeting cards and prints featuring lots of fluffy and feathery friends and the odd rainbow or three. Inspired by animals, nature and travel, I hope to create cards that capture special relationships and make people smile. We export our cards around the world and have grown our customer base in the UK. Most excitingly, since partnering with Eden Reforestation Projects the sales of LMD cards have contributed to the planting of more than 50,000 trees in developing countries.”

Bottom Line from Paperlink

Photocaptions from Cath Tate Cards

The greeting card equivalent of the saucy postcard and more! Paperlink, one of the market leaders of humorous cards, launched its Bottom Line range over 25 years ago and it continues to go from strength to strength. One of the first offbeat cartoon ranges to market – a constant addition of new designs ensures it continues to stay fresh and current.

Cath Tate Cards’ Photocaptions range has been supplying people across the UK and around the world with a dose of Cath Tate’s witty and wise sense of humour for nearly 20 years. Now with over 500 designs in the range, Cath Tate first came up the idea of marrying an old Edwardian photograph with a modern humorous caption in the late 1990’s and the Photocaptions range was born in 2002. Today Photocaptions is still a bestselling range and ranks in the top selling humour cards for many shops. Seven collections from the range have been published as popular books.

Fleet Street from Pigment Fleet Street in its current form began in 2011. Right from the beginning the range fitted perfectly into the Pigment branded folio, with classic imagery and razor-sharp wit. The infamous ‘Man’s cock wins first prize’ card was said by many to be ‘too rude for the UK market’, but years of great sales proved that we’re not as prudish as some may think. Now part of the Pigment humour classics folio, Fleet Street still sits in independent and national accounts across the globe, and proves to be a wonderful slice of traditional British humour.

Ink Press from The Art File Ink Press first launched in 2008 and soon became an iconic collection. Designer Robert Reader took influence from midcentury graphic design, print and cartoons, often seen in advertising of the 50s and 60s. Using textured board and embossed lines, the look and feel of the collection paid tribute to the letterpress style. The mix of designs appeal to both male and female audiences and for many years the collection has offered a unique and impactful display for retailers. This timeless collection also exports well, and has strong representation in over 30 territories across the globe. CATEGORY SPONSOR

PROGRESSIVE GREETINGS WORLDWIDE

The Henries Awards Brochure 2019.indd 71

Quicksilver from Wendy Jones-Blackett Launched in 2006, the Quicksilver range was one of the first to take an old printing technique and give it a contemporary design overhaul. Hot foiled on an antique Heidelberg press, the range has had new designs added year after year, racking up over 1,500 original designs. The textured board has remained the same since day one, manufactured at Croppers’ paper mill in the Lake District and supplied by GF Smith, with envelopes made from the same source to create a perfect colour match. These hand-illustrated cards continue to be one of the strongest selling ranges in the Wendy JonesBlackett portfolio.

Swing Cards from Santoro Santoro celebrates 25 years of Swing Cards this year. This range has demonstrated ground-breaking innovation and originality for a quarter of a century. To celebrate this milestone, Santoro has released a dazzling, limited-edition Happy Birthday Swing Card. The range is also seeing its first ever Christmas editions. Since 1994, Swing Cards have led the way for 3D greeting cards worldwide with relentless creativity and imagination.

Best Service To The Independent Retailer

The finalists in this category were arrived at as a result of an exhaustive poll involving over 1,500 independent card retailers. The retailers were invited to nominate which companies they considered to be their top three card suppliers on the service front over the last year. The response was amazing - service being a key issue to retailers. The responses were then correlated, awarding three points to all first choices, two points to those mentioned as second choices and one point to all third choices. These points were then totalled up to arrive at the 10 finalists. There are three trophies in this category, the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards which will be presented to the top three scoring suppliers in the retail poll.
