here’s something special about sitting down to play a game or piece a puzzle together, and that shared experience matters to parents,” says Liz Ireland, founder and md of Bigjigs Toys. “For retailers, games and puzzles is a dependable category that offers year-round sales without being overly reliant on seasonality. Parents continue to see games and puzzles as childhood staples rather than on-trend impulse buys.” A successful preschool game or puzzle is one that balances visual appeal and play value, Liz explains. “The look of a game might be the initial hook, but intuitive design is what keeps young ones engaged. A good game or puzzle needs to be easy enough for a preschooler to understand, but challenging enough to maintain their interest and keep them coming back for more. The best products in this category embrace simplicity, while giving kids a sense of achievement and satisfaction.” Bigjigs’ bestsellers include Traditional Snakes & Ladders,
wooden Noughts & Crosses, peg puzzles and tray puzzles. “We also have some fantastic new releases, including our Dinosaur Chunky Puzzles, London Snap Game and Simply Scandi Jungle Croquet set,” Liz shares. “They’re all good examples of products that have got the fundamentals right – they’re well designed, fun to play and offer genuine value to families.”

Being able to meet face-to-face is invaluable; it gives us the chance to listen, share plans and collaborate in a way that simply isn’t possible through brochures or online meetings. “There’s a genuine sense of community at the show, and spending time with our industry peers and partners at the show is always a highlight. And, of course, unwinding with the team is another high point.” Top tip for newbies: “After hours, King’s Road is a great place to head, with both Christies and Cold Bath Brewing Co. becoming something of a tradition for us. They are perfect places to reflect on the day’s conversations.”

“The preschool games and puzzles sector is very healthy and continually evolving,” asserts Philip Nelson, co-founder of Little Concepts, which has recently added Polish puzzle brand Banana Panda to its portfolio. “Parents are looking for toys that have clear developmental or educational benefits, and games and puzzles fit very naturally into that space.” The most successful games and puzzles have repeat-play opportunities built in, says Philip. “Preschool puzzles need to be ageappropriate and intuitive enough for a child to enjoy but also offer enough depth that they can return to them again and again as their skills develop. That is one of the things we love about Banana Panda. Education is at the heart of the brand, but it never feels overly instructional. Many of the puzzles have several different ways to play built into them, with guides for parents suggesting new activities and games that can be introduced as the child develops. This gives the product longevity while supporting skills such as observation, matching, counting,

Retailers start big Christmas push with top toy lists
A
raft of preschool lines have been appearing on Top Toys for Christmas lists, as retailers begin the countdown to the all-important period.
Below left: Le Toy Van’s Paddington Doll’s House and Peppa Pig Ready Pedal Peppa are both ones to watch for Christmas.
John Lewis was first off the blocks back in August, naming Le Toy Van’s Paddington Doll’s House and Micro Scooters’ Mini Micro Eco Gruffalo Foldable LED Scooter, alongside the likes of the Mon Ami Colette Duck Soft Toy and its own Wooden Breakfast in Bed Set. Argos highlighted lines from two major preschool licences – PAW Patrol The Dino Movie Megasaurus Dino Vehicle and Peppa Pig Ready Pedal Peppa – as well as noting the launch of the Toniebox Lite, plus the VTech Kidi 12-in-1 Guitar
Superstar and two products from its own Chad Valley range. The Entertainer’s top 10 toy predictions, meanwhile, includes licensed character toys, interactive play-sets and traditional roleplay, alongside toys aimed at older children and adults. As well as Peppa Pig Ready Pedal Peppa, the Early Learning Centre Wooden Kitchen and Bluey Muffin’s Home Play-set take their place on the list. Online toy retailer True Toys has unveiled its first Christmas toy list following the brand’s relaunch this summer. LeapFrog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Pop Up Shop, Bayer Dolls Pram, Toniebox 2 – Bluey Starter Set and PlayShifu Peppa Pig Toy Interactive Plush all get the nod from the preschool category.

Kind + Jugend draws the crowds to Cologne
A
round 15,000 trade visitors from 114 countries helped to make the 2026 edition of Kind + Jugend another resounding success. The Cologne-based show wrapped on 17 September, following three days of order activity, international networking and plenty of momentum for the future of the baby and toddler products industry. A total of 666 exhibitors from 42 countries were on the showfloor, with the share of overseas exhibitors rising to 92% compared with the previous year. Despite an economically challenging environment, attendance remained on par with the previous year. “With trade visitors from 114 countries, Kind + Jugend has significantly expanded its
international reach compared with the previous year,” said Oliver Frese, chief operating officer at Koelnmesse. “It’s this international diversity together with the high calibre of trade professionals that makes the difference – the personal connections made at the trade fair lead to business deals and longterm partnerships.” Feedback from exhibitors was also positive, with Daniel Larrson, svp commercial at Thule, commenting: “Kind + Jugend is really where the global baby and toddler products industry comes together. For Thule, it is the perfect stage to present our latest innovations, exchange insights with partners and demonstrate how we are shaping the future of the industry.” For the first time, Kind + Jugend

also had an overarching theme. Titled ‘Growing with AI - new opportunities for the baby and toddler products industry’, the event focused on the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence for the sector, with the theme reflected throughout the entire trade fair. Jörg Schmale, director of Kind + Jugend, said: “By introducing a key theme for the first time, we have also addressed a future topic that the industry is already dealing with and which will continue to gain importance.” The next Kind + Jugend will take place from 7-9 September 2027.
ebebek continues UK expansion International baby and parenting retailer ebebek is continuing its UK expansion with the opening of a new store at Merry Hill, Birmingham. The opening marks the brand’s first location outside the South East. The retailer has secured a 9,689 sq ft space at the West Midlands shopping and leisure destination, adjacent to Asda in the Lower Mall. The store offers ebebek’s range of products covering car seats, pushchairs, nursery furniture, clothing, toys, feeding and weaning, alongside a selection of leading baby and parenting brands. Since entering the UK market,
ebebek has invested in its physical stores and omnichannel offering. The Merry Hill opening forms part of plans to expand across key UK markets throughout 2026 and beyond. “Opening at Merry Hill, Birmingham is an important milestone for ebebek as we take our stores beyond the South East for the first time,” said Faruk Giray, UK country director at ebebek. “We know preparing for a baby and navigating the early stages of parenting can feel like a minefield, especially for first-time parents, so our aim is simple: to bring quality products, genuine value for money and knowledgeable support together in one place.”

New York Toy Fair dates confirmed until 2032
T
he dates have been confirmed for Toy Fair in New York until 2032, with The Toy Association and the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center securing a fiveyear partnership for the show. Following the 121st Toy Fair – which will take place on 20-23 February 2027 at the Javits Center – the show will be held on the following dates: 26-29 February 2028; 24-27 February 2029; 23-26 February 2030; 22-25 February 2031; and 21-24 February 2032. The announcement follows a comprehensive strategic evaluation by The Toy Association that included open feedback, candid discussion and broad collaboration to align the longterm timing and location of the event
across key stakeholders representing the diverse constituents within the toy industry. Each Toy Fair will run for four days, from Saturday through Tuesday, with show dates intentionally avoiding both President’s Day and Valentine’s Day each year – two priorities consistently identified by exhibitors and attendees throughout the consultation process. “We provided industry leaders with a blank canvas and every reasonable option for review, and after a thorough evaluation, it was clear that New York City in February best meets the needs and goals of our diverse

Mamas & Papas reveals its Christmas must-haves Mamas & Papas has revealed its top 10 Christmas must-haves for 2026 – from a personalised advent calendar and Christmas sacks to baby's first decorations and festive knitwear. The leading nursery retailer has more than doubled the number of
personalised clothing styles in this year's collection and expanded the service across soft toys for the first time. It comes as its bestselling advent calendar sold out before November last year and more than 90% of customers chose to personalise their Christmas sacks.
It reflects a growing appetite for products that become part of annual festive family rituals. Mamas & Papas will also be launching new gift boxes for the first time from October. In addition to the popular advent calendar and Christmas sacks, the top 10 also includes Boris the Bear and Millie the Bunny soft toys (which come dressed in Christmas jumpers); ‘My First Christmas’ hanging decorations for the whole family; Santa Letter Christmas Tree Decoration; a Christmas Eve box and plate; as well as apparel such as pyjamas and a Christmas Icons two-piece knit set. Karrot Kids makes its debut
Below: MaeBee has been created with broad family appeal and longterm brand potential at its heart.
A
nimation studio and IP owner Karrot Entertainment is stepping up its ambitions in the licensing and consumer products market with the launch of Karrot Kids, its new dedicated commercial division. The move comes as the company prepares to launch its new preschool series MaeBee, debuting this autumn on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. MaeBee will be the first major new IP to be taken to market under the Karrot Kids banner. The division has been established to build long-term consumer products programmes, brand partnerships and content distribution around Karrot’s portfolio of owned brands, with a particular focus on securing cross-category partners for MaeBee, in addition to expanding opportunities for its established properties including Sarah & Duck. MaeBee follows Mae, a curious young gnome, and her foster brother Bee, as they discover the
natural world together through imaginative adventures. It has been commissioned by CBeebies, France Télévisions and RTÉ, with ABC recently acquiring broadcast rights for Australia, providing the new property with significant broadcaster backing ahead of its launch. Initial product categories being explored include toys, games,
apparel, home and lifestyle. “Karrot has always been driven by original ideas, memorable characters and great storytelling. With Karrot Kids, we are taking the next step in how we build and manage those brands beyond the screen,” said Ashley O’Kane, head of licensing and partnerships at Karrot Entertainment.
Anamalz makes UK return with Commotion Australian wooden toy brand Anamalz is returning to the UK, with Commotion appointed as its exclusive UK ecommerce partner. The partnership will see Commotion operate the official UK store at www. anamalz.co.uk from September, managing fulfilment, customer service and aftercare. UK orders will be picked, packed and dispatched from Commotion’s base in Tonbridge, Kent, rather than Melbourne. Anamalz was founded in Australia in 2006 by Louise Causon, who developed a range of wooden animal figures designed to be held, bent, posed and

incorporated into imaginative play. The figures combine wood, plush and rope and span six worlds – Icebergs,
Roaming Mountains, Outback, Coral Bay, Hidden Valley and Barnfields. The brand previously had a strong presence in the UK, which became one of its largest markets. However, the growth of online retail made the distance between Melbourne and UK customers more challenging, with shipping times and costs affecting its UK presence. “Anamalz has always been about mystery and whimsy as much as wood and craft, and Commotion understood that from the start. I can’t wait to continue the story with them,” said Louise Causon, founder and ceo at Anamalz.

THE FUTURE OF PRESCHOOL PLAY
T
oy Fair continues to be a key date in the calendar for the preschool sector to connect with existing partners and forge new business. As early years retailers, nursery specialists and educational suppliers prepare for 2027, the show provides the first chance for key stakeholders to get hands-on with thousands of new launches spanning the preschool market. With more than 200 exhibitors set to showcase their latest ranges in January, visitors can expect to discover everything from early learning toys, construction sets and role-play products to arts and crafts, plush and educational games, reflecting the breadth and diversity of today's preschool category. For the 2027 event, many of the industry's leading preschool and early learning brands are returning to showcase their latest ranges and innovations. Visitors will have the opportunity to connect with established exhibitors including VTech/LeapFrog, Playmobil, Clementoni, Learning Resources, Orchard Toys and Juratoys, all showcasing products designed to support learning through play while meeting the evolving needs of today's families. Alongside these household names, the show will also welcome a number of exciting newcomers making their Toy Fair debut. These include ethical felt toy brand Tara Treasures, sensoryfocused publisher Make Believe Ideas and ElectricRideOnCars.co.uk, highlighting the breadth of innovation entering the preschool market.
KEY TRENDS ON DISPLAY As consumer priorities continue to evolve, Toy Fair 2027 is expected to showcase several themes that are increasingly shaping purchasing decisions within the preschool sector. Developmental play remains a major focus, with brands continuing to create products that encourage creativity, problem-solving and independent exploration. Many exhibiting companies are expected to showcase innovation that supports child-led learning and skill development. Construction and STEM learning continues to grow in importance, with brands including CONNETIX & My Creative Box, Plus-Plus and Skillmatics demonstrating how educational play can be combined with creativity and fun from an early age. Meanwhile, role-play and imaginative play remain key drivers of engagement for preschoolers. Exhibitors including Casdon, Plum Play and Pilsan Toys will demonstrate a wide range of products that encourage storytelling, social interaction and real-world learning through imaginative experiences. The importance of creative expression will also be evident across the show floor, with companies such as Craft Buddy, Dazzle dots and Buki France to name a few of those showcasing arts, crafts and hands-on activities designed to inspire young makers. As parents increasingly seek products that support wellbeing and meaningful play experiences, the demand for sensory, tactile and
screen-free toys continues to play a key role. Toy Fair 2027 will feature a wide range of products that support sensory exploration, emotional development and mindful play, with several exhibitors reflecting this area of the market. The enduring appeal of plush, gifting and character-driven products will also be represented by leading brands including Aurora World, Posh Paws International and Ty, while publishers and activity specialists such as Robert Frederick and Curious Universe will demonstrate the latest innovations in children's books, activity ranges and learning-led content. “As the preschool market continues to evolve, Toy Fair remains well positioned to spotlight the trends, products and innovations shaping the future of early childhood play,” says Majen Immink, head of Toy Fair. “From character-led licensed toys and educational STEM products to sustainable playthings, sensory experiences and open-ended learning solutions, the creativity and innovation of the preschool category will be showcased at the event in January.” For buyers, retailers and early years specialists looking to discover the next generation of products that will engage young children and support their development, Toy Fair 2027 promises to be an essential destination and a valuable insight into the future of preschool play. Head to the Toy Fair website for more information: www.toyfair.co.uk.

INDUSTRY ROUNDTABLE
BRAND BUILDERS PPS sits down with five senior licensing executives - Jade Ferguson, senior retail and licensing manager at Magic Light Pictures; Flavio Cortes, director, franchise marketing and development at Moonbug Entertainment; Karen McNally, licensing director at Blue Zoo Licensing; Sally Carnota, senior director of licensed consumer products at Hasbro; and Murilo Hinojosa, vp consumer products and commercial partnerships, UK/EMEA & Latam at BBC Studios – to discuss 2026 success stories, retail health, growing categories and what’s next for the licensed preschool space.
Jade Ferguson
Flavio Cortes
Karen McNally
HOW HAS 2026 BEEN FOR YOUR BUSINESS SO FAR? Jade: “2026 has been an exceptional year for Magic Light Pictures and our licensing programme. We’ve achieved remarkable success and momentum across multiple categories, particularly in experiential retail activations and expanding our footprint in the FMCG space. Despite a competitive market, our evergreen properties The Gruffalo, Zog, Room on the Broom and Stick Man have proven their immense commercial power. A major highlight has been seamlessly integrating our IPs into lifestyle, hospitality and FMCG spaces, allowing us to connect with families in meaningful new ways.”

Flavio: “2026 has been an incredibly busy period for all of us at Moonbug. In Consumer Products & Experiences, 2026 has seen our long-term strategy come to life in a really meaningful way: we are rebuilding the CoComelon product offering, with best-in-class partners, and being laser focused on how we can leverage the whole Moonbug organisation to drive success at retail. From implementing our refreshed visual identity, to rolling out new packaging, we are confident we have never been so well placed to surprise and delight our fans at retail.” Karen: “It has been an exceptional year of global growth for Blue Zoo Licensing and the Blocks Universe. We are seeing sustained momentum, driven by successful retail expansions and a rapidly growing international footprint. It validates our transition from a niche educational offering to a mainstream global preschool contender. A huge part of this success has been establishing a robust direct-to-consumer infrastructure, launching our primary blocksuniverse.tv store and official Amazon Brand Stores globally, alongside securing mass market physical retail listings across major UK grocers.” Murilo: “2026 has been another outstanding year for us. Bluey continues to go from strength to strength, and we’ve built on that momentum with significant new product launches, retail expansion and industry recognition. With the Bluey movie arriving in 2027, we’re very focused on ensuring we have the right long-term partnerships and product strategy in place. Rather than simply preparing for a film release, we’re building sustainable programmes that will continue to engage families well beyond the movie.”

In South Korea, the brand has become an absolute phenomenon - the Numberblocks and Alphablocks stage shows have regularly achieved 90% occupancy, and XO PLAY’s SmartBlock was the top preschool toy earlier this year.” HOW IMPORTANT HAS IT BEEN TO CONTINUE TO INVEST IN NEW PRESCHOOL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT WITH LICENSEES, INNOVATION AND NEW RANGES?
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR BIG PRESCHOOL SUCCESSES?
Flavio: “Crucial to say the least. Working in full collaboration with our partners is what makes licensing possible after all. Our job as a licensor is to know the brand inside and out, leveraging the licensees’ expertise to bring it to life in products they know better than anyone else. Seeing how century-old brands continue to show up in new and innovative ways never fails to inspire me on what is possible.” Sally: “It’s incredibly important. Innovation remains one of the key drivers of long-term growth because consumer expectations, retail environments and play patterns are constantly evolving. “From a licensing perspective, it’s about finding fresh ways to extend brand equity into products that remain relevant for today’s consumers. For established brands, that means continually introducing new formats and experiences that encourage engagement while staying true to what families love about the property. We’re seeing this through our collaboration with Horizon Group USA, which has significantly expanded the Play-Doh licensed consumer products programme into new creative play categories.”
Sally: “The most successful programmes today are often those that move beyond a single product category and create multiple points of engagement for consumers. Peppa Pig is a great example. In toys and creative play, we’ve seen continued growth through partners such as Goliath, while we’re also seeing strong opportunities in everyday consumer products that support families through key routines and developmental milestones. Our collaboration with Pampers brought together trusted parenting and one of the world’s most recognisable preschool brands through a fully integrated campaign. Similarly, My Carry Potty marked the brand’s first ever licensed collaboration, bringing Peppa Pig, George Pig and Evie Pig to its patented travel potty range. We’ve also seen strong success with Wild, where Peppa Pig was selected as the hero launch partner for WildChild, Wild’s first ever kids’ personal care range. Alongside partners such as Yoplait and Heinz, these collaborations demonstrate how preschool brands can authentically support family life while creating WHEN IT COMES TO PRODUCT CATEGORIES, meaningful new opportunities for licensees.” WHICH ONES DO YOU FEEL ARE RIPE FOR Jade: “Highlights include our major FMCG crossover with DEVELOPMENT? Kenvue for the Aveeno Kids partnership and multi-brand cross-category activations. and physical stores build trust through tangible, immersive brand experiences.” Murilo: “Physical retail continues to play a vital role, particularly for preschool brands where discovery and theatre are so important. We’re seeing retailers invest more in immersive experiences, exclusive product launches and integrated marketing campaigns that help bring brands to life in-store.”
stage shows and pop-up retail. Finally, inclusive products are incredibly important to our brand values; following the success of our Every Cherry accessible publishing for children with learning difficulties, we see special educational needs (SEN) products as a vital area for ongoing development.” Sally: “Food and beverage is one area where I see significant potential, particularly in lunchbox-friendly snacks and convenient products designed for young families. Preschool brands are part of children’s everyday lives, creating opportunities to bring trusted characters into mealtimes and snack occasions in ways that appeal to children while delivering the quality and convenience parents value.” Murilo: “Health and wellbeing is an area with enormous potential, particularly when products can help families in meaningful ways. Our partnership with Specsavers is a great example of using licensing to improve children’s experiences rather than simply placing characters on products. “We’re also seeing continued opportunities in food, collectables, screen-free entertainment and experiential products. Families are increasingly looking for products that support learning, creativity and shared experiences, and licensing is well placed to deliver that.” HOW IS THE CURRENT STATE OF THE RETAIL LANDSCAPE? Jade: “There is definitely a strong return to the high street, but retailers want engaging ’retailtainment’ to drive footfall. Major partnerships with Sainsbury’s, Asda and JoJo Maman Bébé demonstrate that combining exclusive product ranges with interactive IP activations yields outstanding retail performance.” Sally: “The retail landscape is more diverse and interconnected, with licensed products reaching consumers through grocery, value, department and specialist retailers, as well as marketplaces and socialcommerce platforms. This creates more routes to market, but also greater competition for attention, so retailers are looking for strong programmes that can work across multiple categories and channels. Platforms such as TikTok Shop can turn cultural discovery into immediate action, e-commerce offers breadth and convenience,
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS Q4 AND 2027 APPROACHES? Flavio: “2027 will be a huge year for Moonbug. February will see the first-ever global theatrical release for one of our biggest franchises with CoComelon: The Movie. We can’t wait for kids all over the world to see their favourite characters in a way they have not before.” Karen: “Everything is building toward the Numberblocks 10th anniversary in 2027. Our ’Year of 10’ campaign will be a year-long global celebration featuring extensive retail activations, school STEM events, influencer campaigns and new music. It serves as the perfect springboard to elevate Alphablocks, Colourblocks, and Wonderblocks under the unified Blocks Universe banner.” Sally: “I’m particularly excited about what’s ahead for Peppa Pig in 2027. With Peppa and Mummy Pig taking on a bigger role in the brand’s storytelling, we see meaningful opportunities to deepen engagement with preschool audiences and families while inspiring new consumer products and experiences. We’re also looking forward to expanding Peppa Pig into new creative play categories. Our new collaboration with Bladez Toys will bring Peppa Pig and Play-Doh together through a fun range of arts and crafts products.” Jade: “I am extremely excited to see our expanding licensing partnerships come to life across our entire retail and experiential footprint. With our Christmas special, The Baddies, premiering on BBC One on Christmas Day, further episodes of Zog launching on Cbeebies and iPlayer and our Pip and Posy Christmas Special on Sky Kids alongside new plush launches with Aurora and supporting merchandise across hardlines, our preschool licensing programme is positioned for unprecedented strength entering 2027.” Murilo: “Q4 is always an exciting time, particularly with such a strong line-up of products arriving across toys, publishing, apparel, home, audio and collectables. Looking ahead to 2027, I genuinely believe it’s going to be a landmark year for Bluey. The movie will create incredible excitement, but what excites me even more is seeing the breadth and quality of products our partners have developed to help families celebrate the brand in so many different ways.” Left: The Aveeno Kids partnership has been a successful one for Magic Light Pictures.

FOCUS ON: THOMAS & FRIENDS
A NEW ERA OF CONTENT AND PLAY
Inset: A comprehensive relaunch brings together refreshed character designs, original animated content and a reimagined product line for Thomas & Friends.
F
or more than 80 years, Thomas & Friends has achieved that balance through a world built around warmth, friendship, teamwork and the value of helping others. Since Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in The Railway Series in 1945, the franchise has moved from classic book illustrations to live-action television, CGI and animation. As the ways children watch, play and engage with their favourite characters continue to change, Mattel is now opening a new chapter for Thomas & Friends. A comprehensive relaunch brings together refreshed character designs, original animated content and a reimagined product line, reconnecting the franchise with its railway roots while creating a cohesive new world for today’s preschoolers. The next chapter began earlier this year with the unveiling of a new Thomas & Friends logo and an updated look for Thomas. Inspired by the franchise’s classic model and CGI eras, the refreshed design reconnects with the warmth, detail and authentic railway characteristics that families have long associated with Thomas. The creative direction was developed through research and exploration of what children and parents valued most about the character over time. Familiar proportions and recognisable features have been retained, while contemporary visual details ensure that Thomas and the
world of Sodor feel welcoming and relevant for a new generation. That refreshed world now comes to life in Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories Really Helpful Engines, a new animated special introducing the wider Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories series, which will arrive in early 2027. Bringing together Thomas, Percy, Rosie and friends old and new, Really Helpful Engines is a music-filled railway adventure centered on the power of helping others. Through heartfelt storytelling, humour and three original songs, the characters discover what it means to be truly helpful in both heart and action. Actor Henry Golding narrates the English-language version, while actress Karla Souza narrates the Spanish-language version. The special is available on the Thomas & Friends YouTube channel and is set to air on 5’s preschool strand, Milkshake! this autumn. Really Helpful Engines also sets the creative direction for the forthcoming series, combining warm, character-driven storytelling and deeper character personalities with the authentic railway adventures at the heart of Thomas & Friends.
Right: Actor Henry Golding narrates the English-language version.
Keeping a preschool franchise relevant across generations requires a careful balance: preserving the qualities that families know and trust while continuing to evolve for the children discovering it for the first time. Mattel explains to PPS how Thomas & Friends has succeeded in achieving the ultimate balancing act. The relaunch also extends into play through a reimagined Thomas & Friends product line designed to help preschoolers recreate stories from Sodor and build railway adventures of their own. At the centre of the range is the new Easy Connect track system, developed to make building more intuitive and rewarding for young children. Snap-easy connections, wider rails, auto-rerail technology and faster build times support independent play, allowing children to spend less time assembling their railway and more time immersed in storytelling. The unified system works with both die-cast and motorised engines, creating a seamless and expandable world of play. Updated die-cast engines feature authentic proportions, expressive details and magnetic couplers, bringing classic train play back to the heart of the range. The redesigned motorised line offers simplified push-button activation, giving preschoolers an intuitive way to set their engines in motion. New sets can also connect with previous Thomas & Friends track sets through an included adapter, allowing families to build on their existing collections as they explore the new system. Together, the new content, visual identity and product innovation create a more connected Thomas & Friends experience across watching, storytelling and play. They also form part of a wider franchise approach spanning publishing, consumer products, live experiences, gaming and music.

FOCUS ON: RKW
INNOVATION ON SHOW
RKW is heading to Harrogate Nursery Fair with new launches, bestsellers and fresh updates on favourite designs from Chicco and Hubble Connected. PPS catches up with Mike Acton, category director for nursery, to find out how both brands are responding to changing parenting needs and delivering innovation.

hrough Chicco and Hubble, two brands trusted by families worldwide, RKW continues to establish itself as one of the nursery sector’s leading distributors and brand partners, offering a wide and ever-evolving range of product spanning sleep, feeding, travel, nursery technology and early years development. For anyone wanting to see the latest innovations in those

We’re particularly excited to reveal these at Harrogate, as they demonstrate how Chicco continues to rethink traditional nursery products around flexibility, longevity and modern lifestyles.” Parents are

In addition to safety credentials, parents are looking for fewer, better products that can adapt as their children grow and provide value over a longer period. At the same time, products will need to integrate naturally into the home, with parents continuing to seek contemporary aesthetics alongside practical functionality.” This combination of versatility and style is also evident across Chicco’s wider portfolio. The Zest Plus Highchair, which serves three stages in an ultra-lightweight, compact design suited to modern family homes, has been warmly received by retailers and families. Another 2026 release, the Magia Rocker, offers soothing rocking, multiple recline positions and a design that evolves from newborn rocker to toddler chair. “We expect longevity, multifunctionality, sustainability and design-led products to remain key trends,” says Mike. “For nursery retailers, the challenge lies in identifying products that meet these needs, offer a clear point of difference and give parents a compelling reason to buy. Suppliers can support this by providing strong product education, clear communication around key benefits and reliable after-sales support. Our focus at RKW is on working closely with retail partners and offering products with genuine innovation, strong brand heritage and clear consumer benefits that retailers can confidently recommend.” That close relationship with retailers will be central to
Meraviglia: a highchair for every stage An exciting addition to Chicco’s feeding collection, the Meraviglia Highchair reflects the growing demand for products that offer longevity. “It transforms through four stages, from a recliner suitable from birth to a highchair, baby chair and ultimately an adult chair,” Mike explains. “Its modular design requires no tools to adapt, while the adjustable seat and footrest support a child’s development. It’s made from FSC-certified beech wood, and combines durability and sustainability with a timeless design that can complement the home for years to come.” Following its success, Chicco will be unveiling the new and improved Meraviglia Highchair at Harrogate, bringing further innovation to this versatile multi-stage design. RKW’s presence at Harrogate, with Mike looking forward to meaningful conversations with retailers and industry partners and giving them a clear understanding of where both Chicco and Hubble are heading. “For Chicco, there is a significant opportunity to build on its reputation for innovation across sleep, feeding, furniture and early childhood, particularly with products designed around longevity and evolving family needs,” he says. “Hubble, meanwhile, has continued to build momentum and has an opportunity to further develop its position in connected nursery technology as parents become increasingly comfortable with smart solutions in the home. Across both brands, we see strong potential in combining trusted expertise with innovation that responds to genuine consumer needs. “We want visitors to leave our stand excited about the new products, but also confident in the consumer need behind them and the opportunities they can bring to their businesses. Ultimately, Harrogate is about building relationships, supporting our retail partners and demonstrating how RKW’s brands can continue to deliver relevant, new innovative products for modern families.” Visit RKW at Harrogate International Nursery Fair (18–20 October), Hall M, Stand M5.
Smarter nursery solutions In addition to Chicco, RKW will be bringing the latest innovations from Hubble Connected to Harrogate, including the brand’s award-winning range of smart baby monitors. “Smart monitoring technology is becoming increasingly integrated into the nursery space, and Hubble enables us to offer retailers a complete and forward-thinking solution,” says Mike. “Parents are looking for more than simply being able to view their baby remotely. They want connected products that provide meaningful reassurance and make everyday life easier. Hubble’s GoBaby Portable+ is a good example, combining 2K Ultra Clear HD video with portable viewing and both WiFi and non-WiFi connectivity. Through the HubbleClub app, Advanced Hubble Insights can help parents identify rollovers, covered faces and true cries, while Advanced Sleep Insights provide a clearer picture of baby’s sleep. As technology develops, we see AI playing an increasingly important role in turning data into useful, accessible insights for parents.”

THE BIG INTERVIEW: TUTTI BAMBINI
WELCOME HOME
As it celebrates its 40th anniversary, Tutti Bambini is looking to the future with the launch of Origin – a new capsule nursery collection created to fit into modern homes, shaped by four decades of understanding family life and designed for the way families live today.
O
“
rigin really started with the home,” begins Emma Hudson, general manager at Tutti Bambini. “We kept coming back to the idea that a nursery shouldn’t feel like a completely separate world from the rest of your house. Parents put so much thought into their interiors, choosing pieces they genuinely love and creating spaces that feel personal to them, and nursery furniture has historically often asked them to compromise on that.” Launching in November 2026, with pre-orders opening in October, Origin brings together core pieces from some of Tutti Bambini’s bestloved ranges – Alba, Alba Mini, Como, Malmo, Modena and Riley, plus the CoZee range of bedside cribs – with considered finishes, fabrics and accessories. Across the collection, each piece is designed to

work beautifully with every other, offering parents the flexibility to create a nursery that looks and feels, in Emma’s words, “completely at home”. Warm woods and stylish finishing touches such as quilted
cashmere and patina brass handles have been chosen to reflect the materials and details that people are already choosing elsewhere in their interiors, while tonal finishes can be easily layered to create a coordinated, calming look. Creating the collection involved a careful process of curation, with the team being deliberately discerning about which pieces made the final edit. “We were quite disciplined about what made the shortlist, because we didn’t want to create products simply for the sake of having a bigger collection. Every piece had to earn its place,” Emma states. Cot beds naturally sit at the heart of the collection, reflecting the importance Left: Pre-orders for the Origin collection, which includes the Riley Mini Cot Bed in Cashmere and Walnut, open in October.

THE BIG INTERVIEW: TUTTI BAMBINI of sleep and the nursery during a child’s earliest years. But wardrobes, chests, changing and nursing pieces and accessories have also been considered as part of the wider room rather than as standalone products. “What I love is that each piece can stand beautifully on its own, but when you bring them together you really understand what Origin is trying to do,” says Emma. “The collection is designed purposely to be mixed and matched. For example, we have given our beloved Malmo cot bed a new lease of life in a beautiful walnut, and we’re introducing a gorgeous new range of softer finishes to really enhance the whole collection. Every detail has been carefully considered.” There’s far more to the collection than good looks, however. “Origin is for parents who care about their home, but don’t want to choose between design and practicality
A shared journey
Tutti Bambini’s milestone anniversary is a chance for the brand to celebrate its retail partnerships, in particular the smaller independents that have been part of its decades-long journey. “Independent nursery retailers bring something incredibly valuable to this category: knowledge, trust and human reassurance,” Emma says. “Becoming a parent can be overwhelming. There are hundreds of decisions to make and an enormous amount of information to navigate, and a brilliant independent retailer can make that whole experience feel very different. They are also the best advocates for any brand. “We don’t see our independents simply as places that sell Tutti products. They’re an important part of how families experience our brand. Our responsibility is to give them the product, knowledge, training, content, POS and marketing support they need to tell that story brilliantly, but also to keep listening to them. They’re incredibly close to the customer and that insight is invaluable to us.”
when they become a parent,” Emma explains. “They want pieces that can withstand family life, that are well designed, work hard and will last – which is what Tutti Bambini has always done well.” That understanding of real family life and of what parents want and need is something Emma believes has been fundamental to Tutti Bambini’s longevity as a brand. “It comes down to trust,” she states. “40 years is a long time to be welcomed into people’s lives. Families have changed enormously over time. Homes have changed, the way we shop has changed and what parents expect from brands has changed, but ultimately parents still want to feel safe, reassured and ready. They want products that make life that little bit easier and that they’re happy to live with in their home. Tutti has always understood that. We’ve evolved, but we’ve never lost sight of who we’re designing for.” The company is marking its anniversary with a ‘40 Years Forward’ campaign, reflecting a desire to celebrate its heritage while concentrating on what comes next. “40 years gives us an incredible legacy, but what excites us most is earning the right to be part of family life for the next 40,” Emma says. “It’s a privilege to be there during Below: Origin’s Malmo cot in Walnut and striped fabric Juno nursing chair illustrate how the pieces in the collection can be mixed and matched.
that extraordinary period when someone is preparing to become a parent and creating a home for this little person they haven’t even met yet. The anniversary is really about what comes next: continuing to listen, to evolve our products, and stay relevant and useful to parents for the next generation.” Back in the here and now, Emma is looking forward to parents discovering the Origin collection and seeing how naturally it fits into their own homes. “I’ve been so close to the thinking behind Origin, from those early conversations about where we wanted to take the brand through to seeing the finishes, imagery and complete rooms come together. It’s an exciting moment when something that has existed in conversations, moodboards and people’s heads suddenly becomes real,” she shares. “The collection is aspirational, but we’ve worked hard for it not to feel intimidating or untouchable. It should feel warm, calm and lived in – a beautiful backdrop to real family life, rather than a room nobody is allowed to touch. “For me, Tutti is about where family begins, and Origin feels like a natural expression of where we’re going next.” For further information visit www.tuttibambini.com. EVENT FOCUS: HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL NURSERY FAIR
DESTINATION HARROGATE Inset: Harrogate International Nursery Fair returns from 18-20 October.
The first port of call for retailers and buyers looking for the latest and best in nursery products, Harrogate International Nursery Fair returns to the Harrogate Convention Centre from Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 October, bringing together both established names and upcoming brands from the UK and further afield. From the new Talks Zone to networking opportunities, PPS finds out what this year’s show has in store.

retailers with the opportunity to explore the latest launches and trends all under one roof. Product sourcing opportunities, however, are just one part of the offering. “Last year’s exhibitors consistently highlighted the
quality of the conversations and connections made during the event,” says show organiser Adrian Sneyd. “Many reported productive meetings with existing customers, introductions to new retail partners and strong engagement with
Luisa Rollins-Svensson, consumer and trade marketing manager, Graco UK
“Harrogate Nursery Fair is where conversations happen naturally, the kind that help us understand retailers’ needs, strengthen partnerships and build new ones.

EVENT FOCUS: HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL NURSERY FAIR Katie Adamson, head of sales UK, Venicci
“Harrogate offers such a great opportunity to spend quality time with our retailers, strengthen those relationships and have proper conversations faceto-face. It’s also the perfect place to showcase what Venicci has been working on, talk about exciting and new collections and, most importantly, get honest feedback directly from our retailers. “There’s always an amazing atmosphere. For me, Harrogate is about the people: catching up with our retailers, meeting new people and seeing everyone together in one place. I also love that moment when we finally get to show what we’ve been working on and see people’s reactions. We’ve got some exciting things to share, so I can’t wait.” Top tip for newbies: “Make sure you save some energy for the evenings. Some of the best conversations and laughs happen once the show has finished.”

new product launches. For both established brands and first-time exhibitors, the show provided valuable opportunities to build relationships and do business in a focused nursery-specific environment.” The welcoming atmosphere was another recurring theme,
with exhibitors praising the professionalism of the event team and the sense of community across the industry, Adrian shares. “Perhaps most encouragingly, a large number of exhibitors left Harrogate already planning their return, demonstrating the ongoing value of the show for the nursery sector.”
James Harrison, country manager, BeSafe
“We really enjoy the show each year. Harrogate is a perfect opportunity to see existing and potential new retailers under one roof, and to spend valuable time with them away from their stores. We’re looking forward to seeing their reactions to the innovation we’ve got lined up for 2027.” Top tip for newbies: “Familiarise yourself with the map of the fair and plan your appointments accordingly, to ensure you maximise the time in each hall and spend less time rushing between appointments.”
This year, Harrogate will be welcoming back regular exhibitors alongside newer names including BTL Diffusion UK, Shady Car Sunshades, Woodvale Studios and Skip Hop, while Ickle Bubba will also be bringing its award-winning product range to the show for visitors to discover. Although UKfocused, the show also continues to attract exhibitors from further afield, giving retailers access to products and brands from a range of international markets. This year’s exhibitors include companies from Denmark, Norway, Italy and, for the first time, South America. “We are particularly excited to welcome KUKULI from Peru,” says Adrian. “The company specialises in premium babywear and childrenswear crafted from Peruvian Pima cotton and brings
Cath Needham, head of sales, iCandy
“Harrogate Nursery Fair is a great chance to showcase our latest iCandy innovations, gather feedback from retailers and customers and strengthen relationships face-to-face. It also gives us a valuable opportunity to understand the wider market and see what’s shaping the future of the nursery sector. “We’re looking forward to catching up with our wonderful retail partners, meeting new faces and showcasing some exciting newness from iCandy. Harrogate is always such a wonderful few days for the industry and there’s a real buzz around bringing everyone together.” Top tip for newbies: “Wear comfortable shoes – you’ll definitely get your steps in. Pace yourself, stay hydrated and enjoy it!”

EVENT FOCUS: HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL NURSERY FAIR a fresh international perspective to the show. Their participation demonstrates the increasingly diverse range of products and sourcing opportunities available to buyers attending Harrogate. International brands continue to see value in connecting with UK retailers through the fair, helping visitors discover products and ideas they may not otherwise encounter.” Regarding newness, one of the most exciting additions this year is the introduction of a new Talks Zone hosted by the Progressive Preschool team. The carefully curated talks programme will give retailers and industry professionals the opportunity to hear from expert
Ieuan Rowell, managing director, Ickle Bubba
“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to catch up with customers, partners and industry colleagues in person, hear first-hand what retailers are looking for and get valuable feedback on our current product lines. In particular, we’re excited to showcase all the features of our brand-new Altair Double travel system. “Being able to see the latest product innovations from across the sector under one roof and discover the ideas and trends shaping the future of the nursery market is also a highlight. “The fair also provides a great opportunity for us to meet new buyers, make new connections and continue conversations that could develop into valuable new relationships.” Top tip for newbies: “If you have time, make sure you get out and enjoy Harrogate itself. It’s a beautiful city, so don’t spend the entire trip inside the exhibition halls.”
Steven Smith, sales and marketing director, CuddleCo
“We have a substantial stand showcasing nursery and children’s furniture, nursing chairs, textiles and accessories, soft play and Doona, so there will be plenty to explore. “We’re particularly excited to show how our collections connect, from creating a coordinated nursery through to furnishing children’s bedrooms and play spaces. Our ‘shop the room’ approach is about helping retailers present an inspiring, considered offer that makes choosing easier for parents. “It is also a chance to challenge perceptions. Some retailers may know us well for furniture or Doona but be less familiar with everything else we offer. We would love visitors to leave saying, ‘I didn’t realise CuddleCo could offer us all of that.’” Top tip for newbies: “Come with a plan but leave room to be surprised. Give yourself space to explore something unexpected and have conversations you had not diarised.” speakers, gain valuable market insights and discuss some of the key issues and opportunities facing the nursery and preschool sectors. Alongside the extensive product showcase on the exhibition floor, it adds an informative and engaging new dimension to the event. “We’re also looking forward to a number of after-show networking activities, with further details to be announced closer to the event,” says Adrian. “These social occasions have always been an important part of the Harrogate experience, helping people build relationships in a relaxed setting beyond the exhibition halls. “My biggest piece of advice for visitors would be to make the most of all three days. While it’s important to schedule appointments with the brands you know you want to see, some of the most valuable discoveries often come from exhibitors you hadn’t planned to visit.”
The Progressive Preschool team will be at Stand C16 in Hall C and welcome enquiries about the PPS Talks Zone, the magazine, PreschoolNews.net or the PPS Awards. For more information about exhibiting at the Harrogate International Nursery Fair, visit www. nurseryfair.com or contact Adrian Sneyd directly at Adrian@ nurseryfair.com. FOCUS ON: AVOVA Inset: AVOVA’s own-brand car seats will begin rolling out from November 2026.
SPEED TO MARKET
For a company that is less than a decade old, AVOVA GmbH is moving at pace. In the past two years alone, it has become the global licensee for storied German brand RECARO, established a new manufacturing base in Günzburg, and – in July this year – officially launched a dedicated UK division and distribution centre. PPS catches up with AVOVA UK general manager, Paul Roberts, to find out how the business is building momentum in the UK market.
F
ounded in 2017 in Germany by a young and passionate team of child safety experts, AVOVA GmbH is known for designing and manufacturing high-quality car seats that combine safety, comfort, functionality and modern design. The company added another considerable string to its bow in January 2024, when it struck a licensing deal with German seating specialist RECARO to develop, manufacture and distribute its premium child-safety seats and strollers under the brand name RECARO Child Safety. “RECARO has over 100 years of expertise in seating design,” says
Paul Roberts. “The company is well known and trusted worldwide as an automotive seat manufacturer for F1, rally and high-end sports cars; they also supply airline seats, train seats and, most recently, gaming chairs. That prestige, heritage and

reputation for safety all come together in RECARO Child Safety.” Combining robust protection with elegant design, RECARO Child Safety seats are beginning to make waves at the premium end of the UK market. With AVOVA UK LTD now up and running – and its Yorkshirebased warehouse fully operational – RECARO designs are rolling out to specialist and premium retailers with increasing speed and efficiency. AVOVA’s award-winning own-brand car seats are set to follow early in 2027. “We now have a dedicated local team that can serve retailers with outstanding products, professional training and reliable local service,” says Paul. “Having a UK warehouse

FOCUS ON: AVOVA
means that when we get stock, we can turn it around much more quickly. Retailers can order locally instead of from overseas, which is a huge plus.” That speed to market was a factor in AVOVA UK securing a retail deal with Halfords, which will be retailing RECARO Child Safety seats from the end of October. “The partnership makes sense, as the synergy between the two brands is already there,” Paul says. “Halfords customers are savvy about automotive, and they will recognise the first-class engineering that goes into RECARO products. Partnering with Halfords gives us a chance to reach a wider audience in a targeted way.” Launching a challenger brand into a crowded market is a tough proposition, but Paul is confident that the commitment AVOVA GmbH has shown in developing the RECARO Child Safety range will pay off. “AVOVA has invested heavily in R&D, tooling and production processes in order to enter the market with an exclusive product that can’t be reproduced elsewhere,” he says. RECARO Child Safety products have been successfully rolled out in many countries across Asia and Europe, including Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy. France and the UK are the most recent markets to open up. “We’ve launched the TORON 1 here in the UK, a product that won the prestigious Red Dot Best of the Best Award,” says Paul. “The seat has an innovative trapezoidal design, which gives it additional stability and absorbs impact forces particularly effectively. This gives enhanced protection in the case of a side-impact collision.” Another model, the VELIX 1, is also set to make its mark. Paul adds: “It’s a Group 123
seat for ages 15 months to 12 years. It looks like a real racing seat – it’s sporty and super-cool, and comes in a range of great colours, including Vibrant Orange and Wow Pink.” Other upcoming releases include a modular system with a 360 infant carrier and a full lie-back function. This will be followed by the launch of RECARO Child Safety wheeled goods, which have been many months in the making. “My feet aren’t going to touch the ground for the next six months,” admits Paul. “It’s busy, but there’s so much to be excited about.” With the launch of RECARO Child Safety, AVOVA has the premium segment of the nursery sector firmly in its sights. “It’s a crowded space, but the RECARO name already carries a huge amount of weight,” says Paul. “There’s a lot of crossover between the materials RECARO uses in its racing seats and its child safety seats. Impact foam, harnesses and buckles by Holmbergs, single injection moulded shells for greater impact absorption, side-impact protection blocks… They’re also used in the VELIX 1, for example.
“The design details, such as breathable bamboo and antifungal fabrics, the print detailing, the buttons on the buckle, and so on, also help to elevate RECARO products. The seats are designed to be as super-safe as they can be – and we’ve got solid ADAC results coming through – but they look beautiful, too. We know we have to launch top-of-the-range products to compete with the other great brands that we’re up against, and we’ve risen to that challenge.” For now, AVOVA UK is leaning into RECARO’s automotive heritage as it drives awareness of the RECARO Child Safety brand. The company has teamed up with popular car review channel Carwow, which has over 10 million subscribers, for YouTube content, and has a strong presence at national car shows. “RECARO have good relationships with brands such as Porsche, and we’re working hard to extend the reach of our car seats,” says Paul. “Prestige motoring brands already know all about RECARO, so when you start talking about a RECARO child seat, they take notice.” Paul is keen to point out that the audience is “not just dads”. “We’re seeing a huge uptick in interest from people who know about cars and motorsport, and maybe appreciate the RECARO seats in their own vehicles, and a growing proportion of those are female. They’re design savvy and safety conscious and they want the best for their baby,” he points out. With RECARO wheeled goods slated to roll out at the end of this year, and the full RECARO collection coming into play in early 2027, Paul recognises that AVOVA UK is at the start of a long and exciting journey. “There’s plenty of NPD going on at the moment, as well as new products coming through. We also have AVOVA’s own-brand car seats to launch, which are award-winning in their own right,” he says. “There’s a lot of work to do, but I can confidently say 2027 is going to be huge for us.” Above left: A Group 123 seat, the RECARO VELIX 1 comes in six different colour options. Left: Suitable from birth to 7 years, the RECARO XENON 1 features advanced trapezoidal side-impact protection.

SECTOR FOCUS: HIGHCHAIRS Inset: Graco’s MiniLite folds down to a compact size for easy storage.
HIGH IDEALS When it comes to buying a highchair, today’s parents have a long checklist, prioritising products that can offer a combination of safety, aesthetics, longevity and ease of use. PPS talks to leading highchair suppliers about the trends shaping the category, and how innovation is helping brands deliver products that work harder for today’s families.
“
L
ifestyle factors such as smaller living spaces and squeezed incomes are driving demand for compact, adaptable and value-led solutions,” explains Luisa RollinsSvensson, consumer and trade marketing manager at Graco UK. “Beyond that, parents are looking for safety, product longevity and designs that complement their home. Products that adapt as their child grows or offer multiple modes are increasingly popular. Convenience is also key: lightweight frames, simple assembly and wipeclean materials all play a major role in the decision-making process.” In a crowded market, Graco’s MiniLite and Presti highchairs stand out for their blend of practicality, flexibility and exceptional value, says Luisa. “MiniLite is compact, lightweight and designed for everyday convenience, with an ultra-compact freestanding fold that parents love. It’s simple to clean and features tool-free assembly, making it a
genuinely fuss-free choice for busy families. Presti provides extended versatility and longevity, adapting from a highchair to a toddler low chair and then a child stool.” Wider interiors trends have a significant influence on highchair design, Luisa points out. “Parents increasingly want nursery products that blend seamlessly into their homes, and more than ever we’re being invited into the homes of the influencers we follow. It’s impossible not to be inspired by the colours and décor choices we see. For us, that means keeping an eye on the next seasonal palette, emerging fashion trends and the broader interiors mood parents want to bring into their own homes.” Chicco has also evolved its highchair portfolio to meet changing parental expectations. Its FSCcertified beech wood Meraviglia range, for example, transforms through four stages, from birth to adulthood.
“Versatility, longevity and ease of use are becoming key considerations,” says Mike Acton, category director for nursery at RKW. “There is also greater awareness around materials and sustainability, with families looking for durable products that can be used for longer. Innovation is increasingly focused on combining safety with intuitive design, comfort and features that make everyday mealtimes easier for both parents and children.” Aesthetics also matter. “Baby products are increasingly part of the wider home, so parents naturally want designs that complement their interiors. Natural materials, contemporary styling, softer colour palettes and timeless designs are all increasingly popular.” The intersection between good looks and practicality is the “sweet spot” for the KAOS Klapp highchair, Left: Hauck is debuting the Alpha+ Limited Edition in Urban Green at Harrogate International Nursery Fair.

SECTOR FOCUS: HIGHCHAIRS says KAOS’ co-founder Gineline Kalleberg. “With KAOS Klapp, smart functionality and considered design work seamlessly together. We wanted to create a children’s chair that blends naturally into the home – something parents can enjoy having around the dining table without feeling that it disrupts an otherwise carefully considered interior.” Gineline highlights the latest addition to the Klapp Recycled collection: a striking Mocca Brown colourway. “It’s a rich, warm colour that looks almost like chocolate fondant. It brings even more depth and character to the recycled material while fitting beautifully into contemporary interiors. “In October, we are also relaunching our Premium Wood collection, developed especially for parents who care deeply about interiors, craftsmanship and design. The chairs are made from FSC-certified wood, sourced and manufactured in Europe. Klapp arrives fully assembled, folds flat in seconds and supports active sitting without the need for continual adjustments.” Also made from European-sourced FSC-certified wood, hauck’s awardwinning Alpha+ highchair is a top performer for the brand. “It has eight different adjustable heights, so children

can climb up to the table themselves. This gives them independence, and it’s one less thing for a parent to manage on their endless list,” says Helen Robinson, hauck’s head of sales UK and Ireland. “A highchair is no longer just for feeding a baby. Parents want their child to sit at the table with them, rather than have them eat alone, and they want that seat to be multifunctional – allowing children to colour, craft and read as Below: Mocca Brown is the latest shade to join the KAOS Klapp Recycled line-up.
In safe hands
With cash-strapped parents often tempted to look for the cheapest highchair model, safety remains one area where there can be no compromise. “A child’s safety should never depend on the price of a product,” says Helen Robinson. “At hauck, we hold ourselves to high safety standards and test our products regularly to ensure they meet the relevant requirements. Products that haven’t gone through the same rigorous checks are naturally a concern, not just for us, but for the families that might not realise.” The KAOS Klapp highchair is certified to the latest European highchair safety standard, EN 14988:2017+A2:2024. “In addition, we carry out regular testing and product checks through the Danish Technological Institute as part of our ongoing quality-control procedures,” says Gineline Kalleberg. “To us, safety is not simply about obtaining a certificate – it is a continuous responsibility throughout the product’s lifetime.” “The growth of low-cost products is something the nursery industry needs to take seriously, particularly for safety-critical products such as highchairs,” adds Mike Acton. “Parents may not always be able to see the difference between a product developed and tested to the appropriate standards, and one where information around testing and quality is less clear. For Chicco, safety and quality are non-negotiable. With more than 60 years of experience, our products are developed through research, testing and a detailed understanding of children and families.”
they grow. This is better for saving space, and better for family finances and sustainability too, since one piece of furniture replaces several.” Colour is increasingly important to style-savvy modern families, says Helen. “It’s why we’re so excited to be unveiling our beautiful new Alpha+ Limited Edition in Urban Green, Frosty Blue and Dusty Rose at Harrogate in October.” When it comes to driving brand awareness, social media has an important role to play in the highchair category, states Martyn York, Ickle Bubba’s head of product development. “Real-life demonstrations, peer reviews and recommendations from trusted creators and other parents can be particularly powerful in building confidence and helping families understand how a product works and looks during everyday life. However, it’s ultimately the product itself that delivers long-term success. Innovation, quality, safety and ease of use are what ultimately build lasting trust with parents.” The Flip Magic Fold Highchair has been a great success for Ickle Bubba, with its slim, compact design and single-handed fold mechanism answering a very real need for parents looking for practical products that don’t take over their home. Martyn furthers: “We’re also excited to be bringing the new Flip Pro to market next month, which will be showcased on our stand at the Harrogate Nursery Fair in October. Building on the success of the Flip Magic Fold, it offers an elevated experience while continuing to respond to the needs of modern families.”

SECTOR FOCUS: GAMES AND PUZZLES
Inset: Traditional Snakes & Ladders is among Bigjigs Toys’ bestselling products.
GAME THEORY Preschool games and puzzles may be timeless playroom staples, but there’s plenty of new thinking keeping the category fresh. PPS catches up with some of the sector’s key players to find out more.
T
“
here’s something special about sitting down to play a game or piece a puzzle together, and that shared experience matters to parents,” says Liz Ireland, founder and md of Bigjigs Toys.
“They’re all good examples of products that have got the fundamentals right – they’re well designed, fun to play and offer genuine value to families.” Below: Ravensburger has launched its Giftables puzzles range with three Disney Princess designs.
This gives the product longevity while supporting skills such as observation, matching, counting,

vocabulary, fine motor development and logical thinking.” The Banana Panda range starts with High-Contrast Baby Cards on a String, suitable from birth, and progresses through to first puzzles, matching games and large-format puzzles, allowing retailers to build a coherent offering from babyhood right through the preschool years. Launching in time for Christmas are two Play-as-you-Go Puzzles: Camper Van and Tractor. “Children first build a huge, colourful vehicle puzzle and then use the completed scene alongside additional picture cards and suggested activities to continue the play,” Philip explains. “They have a real ‘wow’ factor when completed and, at £22.99 RRP, we think they’ll make fantastic Christmas gifts this year.” With such a varied choice of preschool games and puzzles available at retail, purchasers are increasingly drawn to trusted characters and brands, says University Games’ marketing director Gemma Lewington. “Preschool licences are hugely important, providing an instant connection with both children and parents and helping products stand out in a competitive marketplace. Familiar characters can make educational play more engaging, while giving parents confidence through trusted stories and properties they already know.” This year, University Games has expanded its licensed preschool offering with new The Learning Journey Peppa Pig and That’s Not My… collections, joining established favourites including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and The World of Dinosaur Roar. “The Learning Journey range as a whole continues to be a consistently
strong performer for us, reflecting the enduring appeal of educational play for the preschool market,” Gemma continues. “Within the range, the Match It! Counting and Match It! Spelling remain consistent top selling lines, thanks to their simple, engaging formats and selfcorrecting elements, while our interactive Telly the Teaching Clock and Learn to Count Cookie Jar remain popular electronic preschool favourites, due to their unique play patterns. “With the exception of a couple of electronic lines, our entire preschool range is under £15, with a large percentage priced below £10, making it easy for retailers to offer affordable options.” Ravensburger, the UK’s leading supplier of children’s puzzles, has refined its offering to present retailers

with a line-up of proven bestselling jigsaw formats, with the majority coming in well below the £15 price bracket. Top performing products in the under-5s segment are Ravensburger’s 4-in-a-Box and Giant
Floor Puzzle formats, with licensed items proving particularly popular. “We’re keen to support retailers with a broad mix of both evergreen hits and the latest new properties that are capturing imaginations,” says the company’s product marketing manager, Elaine Connell. “This year, we’re introducing a new series of collectable Gruffalo & Friends 4-in-a-Box puzzles. The packaging has been designed with a book spinestyle look, making them perfect for display and gifting. Similarly, our new Disney Giftables series of puzzles has recently launched with three Disney Princess designs, each presented in a beautifully shaped box that is designed to be a lovely keepsake for children to treasure.” A relative newcomer to licensing, Orchard Toys is seeing strong sales for its Bluey and The World of Peter Rabbit branded games and puzzles. “Licensed products remain incredibly important because they create an instant connection with families through familiar and trusted characters,” says sales director Simon Prest. “Bluey is hugely popular with younger audiences, while heritage brands such as Peter Rabbit also resonate strongly with families, particularly grandparents who enjoy sharing characters they grew up with.” Ultimately, games and puzzles that offer fun, simple gameplay, that are engaging and easy for children to grasp and offer parents the reassurance of early learning benefits will always perform well, Simon attests. “It’s why our preschool games such as Dress Up Nelly, My First Snakes & Ladders, Farmyard Heads & Tails and Bluey Shopping List are all loved by young children and parents and are some of our best sellers. Parents want products that entertain and educate their children, and screen-free play is a key trend that isn’t going away anytime soon.”

SECTOR FOCUS: SUSTAINABILITY
Inset: Known for its plantbased hygiene products, Naty’s range includes BioEmbrace nappies.
FUTURE FOCUSED
PPS talks to some of the brands thinking carefully about the environmental considerations surrounding baby products and nursery goods, exploring the processes and initiatives they are putting in place as the conversation around responsible product development continues to evolve.
“
W
hen it comes to sustainability, the nursery sector is increasingly expected to lead, with greater consideration of the environmental, social and chemical impacts of its products,” states Helena MansellStopher, founder and ceo at Products of Change (POC), the organisation committed to driving sustainability across the brand licensing and consumer goods industry. “This is particularly important for products designed for babies and young children, where material safety, responsible sourcing and product quality must sit alongside traditional considerations such as function and design.” While the nursery industry is subject to increasing scrutiny regarding the chemicals, plastics, coatings, textiles and foams used within its products, consumers are becoming better informed, asking more questions and acting on that knowledge
through their purchasing choices. “This is timely, as legislation is also changing,” Helena says. “UK Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Ecodesign requirements and the development of Digital Product Passports are moving businesses towards greater transparency, traceability, durability and responsibility throughout a product’s lifecycle. As a result, sustainability and responsible product management are moving rapidly from a ‘nice to have’ to something expected across the nursery market.” Helena names POC member iCandy as a brand where “quality, safety and circularity work successfully Right: B-Corp certified brand Finnsøn’s changing bags, stroller organisers and accessories are made in SEDEX-approved factories.
together”. The company has continued to develop its environmental management practices in recent years, achieving ISO 14001 certification in 2024, establishing a cross-functional IMPACT team to coordinate environmental and CSR initiatives, and recently completing a full-scope carbon footprint mapping to identify emissions hotspots and inform future reduction plans. Product longevity is a key area of focus: through initiatives including its iService repair and restoration programme, extended warranties and durable product design, iCandy is working to support longer product lifecycles. It has introduced recycled materials into the Peach 8, with the main fabrics on every pushchair made using recycled polyester yarn derived from approximately 134 plastic bottles. “We’re particularly proud of the progress we’ve made

SECTOR FOCUS: SUSTAINABILITY in strengthening our approach to environmental management across the business,” says head of product design Mark Bradbury. “Over the past two years, we’ve achieved practical steps that provide a stronger foundation for future improvements and help ensure environmental considerations are part of our decision-making as the business continues to evolve.” Another company looking closely at these issues is B Corpcertified brand Finnsøn, known for its stylish stroller organisers, changing bags and accessories. “This generation of parents has grown up with sustainability as the norm, so they’re not impressed by a brand simply saying it’s eco-friendly,” says co-founder Kate Mawdsley. “They’ll research, they’ll ask what the material actually is, they’ll check a company’s certifications, and they’ll happily invest in something that will last, or buy pre-loved. “We’re hugely proud of our Return to Reuse programme with Little Village HQ, which gives our products a second home with families who need them, and our pre-loved programme with Littleloop that lets customers pass their Finnsøn items on once they’ve finished with them.” Finnsøn’s products are made from low-impact or certified recycled materials and come in recyclable packaging. “We’ve considered their whole lifespan; this includes ethical manufacturing in SEDEX-approved factories with the right audits behind them,” Kate furthers. “Our product testing is done through Intertek and SGS, and all our products are REACH compliant. In addition, our packaging, swing tickets and labels are FSC certified.” All this, of course, comes at a cost. “Doing this properly is never the easy route,” Kate continues. “Certified recycled materials cost more than virgin materials, audited ethical and SEDEX approved factories cost more than unaudited ones, and testing and certification all add up before a single bag is sold.” “Creating high-quality, sustainable toys can require greater investment than producing massmarket plastic alternatives,” agrees

Samantha Goodburn, marketing manager at wooden toy specialist Le Toy Van. “Responsibly sourced materials, quality craftsmanship and more sustainable packaging can all add to the cost. However, our customers appreciate the value in a beautifully made toy that will last and can be passed down.” Sustainability has been part of Le Toy Van’s DNA since it was founded in 1995. “We are B Corp-certified. We are also FSC-certified and use FSCcertified wood across our collections,” adds Samantha. “Our packaging is 100% plastic-free and fully recyclable, with some packaging also designed with cut-out play features so it can be reused as part of the child’s play experience. Our long-term goal is to have a fully plastic-free product line by 2035. We’re also investing in solar-powered production across parts of our manufacturing process, helping us reduce our carbon
footprint and move towards more energy-efficient production.” Swedish brand Naty, founded in 1994, also has a long history of exploring alternative approaches to materials and product development. Known for plantbased hygiene products, its range includes BioEmbrace, the only nappy certified 100% plant-based on the skin-contact layer. “Parents still need products that perform – comfort, absorbency, fit and skin compatibility matter,” says chief marketing officer Nikki Seretis. “Our aim is to combine high performance with certified, skin-safe, plant-based and carefully considered materials.” Naty chooses to communicate its credentials with “transparency and credible evidence,” Nikki says. “We like to talk about proof rather than promises. Rather than relying on sweeping terms such as ‘eco’, we use independent testing and third-party certifications to substantiate specific product and material claims.” Across Naty’s wider range, these include OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Dermatest, DIN CERTCO Biobased, FSC, GOTS, COSMOS Natural, TÜV AUSTRIA OK Biobased and OK Compost certifications. “These certifications verify different things, from material content and responsible sourcing, to skin compatibility and end-of-life degradability,” Nikki explains. “We think this level of specificity is increasingly important. Consumers are more informed than ever and can research products, compare claims and share experiences instantly. Certifications give people something they can verify. “Ultimately, we believe trust comes from being specific about what a product is, what has been independently verified and where there is still room to improve, rather than making a broad claim about the whole brand.” The Products of Change Conference 2026 takes place at the Royal Geographical Society, London, on 11 November. EXECUTIVE PROFILE Right: Emma Scorah
Emma Scorah, marketing and digital director at Ickle Bubba, on efficiency and structure coming before scale, continuing to support customers across all touchpoints and the speed of growth of TikTok as a genuine sales channel.
“DON'T MISTAKE ACTIVITY FOR PROGRESS” commercial strategies. I also love helping my teams think creatively about how they can go the extra mile to deliver on our growth initiatives. But at the heart of that, watching team members grow into genuinely owning meaningful parts of the strategy, and then seeing them deliver on it, is the ultimate reward.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE? Since January 2021, so just over 5.5 years now. I joined initially to build the marketing function, but since being with the business I've also taken over management of direct to consumer and more recently the merchandising department.
WHO IS THE UNSUNG HERO OF THE COMPANY?
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AT THE COMPANY? For marketing, I'm proud of leading the brand's visual evolution, building a much more consistent, elevated look and feel across the business, from creative and content through to how the brand shows up across all channels. For direct to consumer, driving 22% revenue growth in my first full year managing the channel, then sustaining and growing that base the following year with the team. Our third year is also shaping up to deliver year on year growth too. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE WITHIN THE NURSERY/PRESCHOOL INDUSTRY THAT YOU HAVE SEEN SINCE YOU HAVE WORKED IN IT? The speed at which social platforms, especially TikTok, have become a genuine sales channel rather than just an awareness one. Parents are discovering, being convinced by, and buying products in more convenient ways than ever, which has completely changed how quickly a product can go from unknown to must-have. WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Don't mistake activity for progress. It's shaped how I approach everything from team and agency management to internal reporting. The discipline is making sure busyness is actually moving the needle and closely monitoring performance to highlight where it’s not.
Honestly, I couldn't isolate just one person. We're not a huge company, but we have a whole crew of unsung heroes across every team. Everyone is always willing to go the extra mile to get something delivered, often stretching beyond their role to make sure things land. BIGGEST LESSON YOU'VE TAKEN AWAY FROM THE PAST YEAR? That efficiency and structure have to come before scale. Chasing growth without the reporting, accountability and market plans in place just compounds problems further down the line. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE NURSERY/PRESCHOOL BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I really love this industry, which is why I've been part of it for coming up to 12 years now. However, if I could change one thing, it would be making sure we continue to support customers across all touchpoints. Even though I lead a digital channel, my role is also about elevating the customer experience across all touchpoints, not just driving people online. The ability to see and touch a product in person is something we should protect and continue to support, as it helps expectant parents understand our products even more when they're considering what to purchase. WHAT THREE WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF (AND WHY)?
FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The variety. One day I'm shaping strategic planning with the senior leadership team, the next I'm setting the direction for brand and creative execution, and then I'm working with merchandising to effectively manage our stock and create
Structured, curious, supportive. I like turning ambiguity into a clear framework, I like to dig into the ‘why’ behind a number, and I believe constructive and supportive conversations, around ideas, what's working, and even more importantly what's not, are key to success.

RETAILER IN NUMBERS
BUSINESS REPORT
“The last year of business has been slightly more challenging than previous years. We overcommitted to forward orders, which didn’t help. Although sales were up on the previous year, we had too much stock of premium brands. I have consequently brought my spend down for forward orders, to give me more in-season buying power.”
SMARTYPANTS CHILDRENSWEAR
IN NUMBERS
SmartyPants Childrenswear is an independent boutique based in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, specialising in high-quality, stylish and comfortable clothing for 0–8s, from brands including Mayoral, Levi’s, Little Dutch and Mintini Baby. In addition to apparel, the shop stocks a carefully curated range of toys designed to encourage development through play. PPS chats to owner Melissa McArthur about what’s selling, what’s trending and what’s next.
Above: Toys and gifts are a key part of the store’s curated offering.
“Social media is a big part of our business. We have a designated social media and marketing assistant who deals with posting across numerous platforms, creating fresh content daily.”
“Our longest-standing supplier is Sätila. We’ve worked with them for over 30 years, and have customers who had their hats as babies and are now buying for their own children. Our newest supplier is Love & Learn schoolwear. Schoolwear is something we haven’t stocked much of in the past, but we had a phenomenal season with it.”

OLD AND NEW FRIENDS
“People seem to be becoming a lot more conscious of sustainable fashion and the type of fabrics they’re putting their children in. We’re lucky to have a good community in Broughty Ferry who support us, as well as a loyal online community.”
“In-store sales are always consistent, whereas online sales usually peak during sale periods. I would say there’s a 70/30 shop/website split during a ‘normal’ week, although the website is vital to our business.”
SOCIAL LIFE
Above: SmartyPants’ stylish interior creates a welcoming backdrop for its collections.
LOCAL SUPPORT
“Bestsellers coming into September included pom-pom hats. We stock 29 styles of hat, in up to eight different colours, from sizes newborn–4Y. Outfit sets, cardigans and dungarees are selling well too.”
TREND WATCH
“Childrenswear is definitely evolving in style. Legging sets are changing to looser-fitting trousers in muslin fabrics, as opposed to always being cotton. Our customers are definitely dressing their toddlers and older children more fashionably than before.”
IN BRIEF
• “ There are six members in our team, including myself.” • “ I’d say the average customer spend is around £40.” • “ There were 18 boxes in our delivery yesterday, all containing Mayoral clothing.” • “ We make sure to change the window display weekly to keep things fresh.” • “ The shop is around 107 sq m – a bit larger than three double decker buses!”
Above: British brand Pex and Spanish brand Sardon are among the labels on offer in store and online.
