Suppliers ready for ‘invaluable’ Toymaster May Show

W

ith the Toymaster May Show returning to Harrogate from 20-22 May, a host of suppliers with preschool toys and games have been sharing their views with Progressive Preschool as to why the showcase is a vital part of their event calendar. The 2025 show officially sold out of all stand space back in December 2024, with well over 100 suppliers heading to the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate. One such supplier will be Jumbo

Group, with the company’s general manager for UK and Ireland, Jacqueline Taylor-Foo telling PPS: “It’s the best time to reconnect with our valued independent customers, to understand any changes to their needs, plus it’s held at a great time of year. Toymaster has been a big supporter of the GALT brand for many years; it is a stable brand in many of the retailers’ portfolios and we also want to share new innovations. As the company has grown through joining the Jumbo Group, annually we have

more and more exciting things to share - this is a perfect way to meet our customers face to face offering a balance of professionalism and fun, in a truly friendly environment.” Commotion will be one of the first time exhibitors at the event this year. Julie Carter, business development manager, commented: “The Toymaster May Show has a reputation for being an effective, fun and welcoming event that provides genuine opportunities for buyers and sellers alike. This show is crucial for us to showcase our brand,

My 1st Years awarded a coveted B&LLA A collaboration between the Natural History Museum and My 1st Years for a range of personalised preschool childrenswear has triumphed in the Best Brand Licensed Children’s Product or Range category at this year’s Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards (B&LLAs). The winners of the hotly contested B&LLAs 2025 were announced on Thursday 24 April at a glittering awards event, held at the Royal Lancaster London. Hosted by fashion legend Jeff Banks, the brand licensing community’s annual get-together was attended by some 450 retailers, licensees and brand owners who shared in the joy as the worthy

winners made their way to the stage to collect their trophies. Elicia Hicks, My 1st Years softlines buyer, and NHM licensing manager Louisa Skevington were presented with their award by Ian Downes, md at Start Licensing, which sponsored the Below: Elicia Hicks from My 1st Years (left) collected the award with Natural History Museum’s Louisa Skevington.

Best Brand Licensed Children’s Product or Range category. “Winning Best Brand or Licensed Children’s Product or Range at this year’s B&LLAs for our collection with Natural History Museum honestly feels amazing,” said Elicia. “This project has been such a special one for us and to see it recognised in this way means the world. It’s a real testament to the hard work, creativity, and heart that went into every piece, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve created together.” The winning My 1st Years x Natural History Museum collection features personalised dinosaurthemed items ranging from raincoats and backpacks made using recycled polyester, to FSC certified wellies.

share our vision and strengthen relationships within the toy sector.” Phil Cassidy, md at Casdon, says that what makes Toymaster special is the “sense of community” that it fosters. He commented: “Over the years, we’ve built genuine, longstanding relationships with many of our independent accounts, some of whom fondly remember working with our father and grandfather, which makes those conversations often feel more like catching up with old friends

Favourite brands return to Harrogate

Above: Little Dutch is among the raft of companies returning to Harrogate International Nursery Fair in October.

Harrogate International Nursery Fair has confirmed the return of two favourite names: premium nursery brand Silver Cross and award-winning sleep expert Sweet Dreamers, creator of Ewan the Dream Sheep. The Fair, which takes place at the Harrogate Convention Centre from 12–14 October 2025, has also confirmed a number of new exhibitors. These including Nora Baby (car seats), Membantu (sleep-time products), and Edinburgh-based

Petit Wagon, known for its signature Beetle stroller wagon. Buyers will also be able to enjoy catching up with what’s new from the A to Z of Harrogate exhibitors, from Allison Baby to Zoo Family. The latter is being showcased for the first time by Haus Distribution, which is returning to the show with five other design-led brands: Little Dutch, Wildride, Mr Maria, Bon Ton Toys and Miniland. “It is great to have so many new and returning brands already signed up for the October show,” said show organiser Adrian Sneyd. “Nursery retailers attend from all over the UK as well as further afield, seeking the latest baby products, so it is great to know that they are guaranteed to find a selection of fresh inspirations alongside their core purchases.” There is still space available for companies wishing to present products to nursery buyers and boost sales for 2026. Visit www.nurseryfair.com for more information.

Above: Blade & Rose is marking 15 years in May.

Blade & Rose celebrates 15 years Blade & Rose, the much-loved baby and children’s brand created by entrepreneur and mum of two Amanda Peffer, is celebrating its 15th birthday in May. The company was founded by Amanda in 2010 during her maternity leave, when she couldn’t find the fun, functional clothing she wanted for her little one. Amanda was inspired by her then three month old daughter, who always had the bottom of her leggings on show, to create a range of trendsetting leggings featuring stylish and quirky designs on the bottom. A major component of the development was to ensure that the fabric used was durable, functional and would wash well, and – most importantly – that it was soft and kind to children’s delicate skin.

BIBS expands UK presence Parents can now purchase BIBS Denmark products at Boots, both instore and online. The new retail partnership is a significant step for BIBS in making its products more accessible to parents across the UK. Sustainability and innovation remain at the forefront of BIBS’ offering. The brand’s signature pacifiers, which have been a global favourite for decades, are available along with a curated online selection of bottles and accessories designed with both baby and parent in mind. The Boots launch is part of BIBS’ broader growth strategy, reinforcing its position as a go-to baby brand in the UK and beyond.

KIDLY joins the MORI family

A

ward-winning baby and children’s clothing brand, MORI has acquired KIDLY, a respected name in the UK children’s retail space. The strategic acquisition brings together two trailblazers in the baby and kids D2C space and marks a significant milestone in MORI’s vision to become one of the best-loved baby and children’s clothing brands globally. Akin Onal, founder and ceo of MORI, said: “KIDLY built something special with its brand and customer community. Their commitment to beautifully designed, functional products and their strong connection with parents of preschoolers makes them a natural fit for MORI’s next chapter. RESEARCH NielsenIQ’s Emma Wade and Neil Bellamy share the latest on the Baby Care market and the latest Consumer Confidence updates for GB.

INCREASING COSTS AND TARIFFS HIT CONSUMER CONFIDENCE

I

n Q1 2025, we see the value for the total Baby Care market has decreased 3.3% on the same quarter last year. This was driven by declines in Safety & Transport product groups. Declines for both the total Baby Care market and Safety & Transport products happened in all three months, with January being the month with the biggest YoY decline. Volume in Q1 is also in decline versus the same period last year (-0.6%). Similar to value, this is being caused by large declines within Safety & Transport product groups. Average price in Q1 2025 was also in decline (-2.8%) compared to the same period last year. Average price dropped from £33.44 to £32.52. Baby Monitors saw the largest decline YoY dropping -9.2% from £78.35 to £71.11. Whereas the product group that saw the largest increase in average price was Strollers up 9.9% from £317.70 to £349.10.

The Baby Care market is highly influenced by the birth rate, which has been steadily declining YoY in England and Wales, reflecting the slow decline we are seeing in sales. However consumer confidence can help to indicate whether market conditions might be about to get more difficult for retailers and manufacturers. With the latest Consumer Confidence in GB also seeing a decline, further declines in the Baby Care market may be coming. PRICE HIKES? After April’s cost increases, and with Trump’s tariffs threatening, are we on the verge of a new round of high inflation? Neil Bellamy, consumer insights director at GfK, an NIQ company, says: “Headline confidence is down four points in April, led by two sharp drops in our economic measures. There’s an eight-point fall from -29 to -37 in how people see the wider economy in the coming year, and

a five-point dip for the past year’s economic performance. The future indicator on personal finances has also slipped badly, dropping four points to -3. There are good reasons for this downturn. Consumers have not only been grappling with multiple April cost increases in the form of utilities, council tax, stamp duty and road tax, but they are also hearing dire warnings of renewed high inflation on the back of the Trump Tariffs. The inflation rate eased in March, but are we now on the verge of another round of rapidly increasing prices? If so, consumer confidence is likely to collapse and the broad gains seen since the disastrous September 2022 minibudget, when confidence hit a record low of -49, could quickly be eroded.” The Major Purchase Index is down two points at -19; this is six points better than April last year. The Savings Index has recovered five points to reach +30 in April; this is four points better than this time last year. LOOKING FORWARD The decline that we have seen in confidence in April could only be the start and could continue to get worse over the next few months. This is a view supported by Neil as he also notes, “what is quite interesting is that the major purchase index is only down slightly, while many consumers think prices will rise sharply over the next 12 months, so it seems like many people are buying now before the impact of any price rises hits.” With the major purchase index starting to fall this could start impacting more premium products such as Baby Monitors and Strollers, as consumers may start trading down rather than up as they attempt to save more money. What might also start to have an impact is more promotions and price cuts from premium brands, to attract consumers who are now less willing to trade up to the higher end.

GUEST COLUMNIST Brea Brand, ceo and co-founder of CONNETIX, gives insight into the evolving landscape of educational toys, and why parents are choosing toys that promote learning through play. As a masters qualified educator and esteemed business owner, Brea shares what drives the globally loved construction brand and the exciting opportunities ahead for CONNETIX. Right: Brea Brand.

THE RISE OF EDUCATIONAL TOYS

T

he toy industry as we know it is a rapidly changing and innovative space, which makes staying ahead of the game as important as ever. While the benefits of play have been widely recognised for many years, more recently we’ve seen a big push towards educational play and toys that are designed to build essential skills for children. With more and more parents, educators and allied health professionals across the globe searching for quality, hands-on resources that engage young learners, we’re seeing exciting growth and innovations in the educational toy market. Undoubtedly, one of the fastest growing categories in the industry is construction. Providing so much more than entertainment value, construction toys like CONNETIX can help provide the essential building blocks for all areas of learning and development. From problem-solving to fine motor skills, boosting imagination, creativity, focus and resilience, plus a wide range of STEAM learning concepts and more. It’s therefore not surprising that construction toys are becoming a leading choice for parents with long-lasting educational and play value for children of all ages and abilities. When my business partner, Dave Alexander, and I founded CONNETIX in 2019, we could never have envisioned the incredible growth and support our brand

would receive from the community. From the beginning, our mission has always been to champion learning through play by producing highquality products and achieving this by nurturing strong partnerships. Which brings us to today, where we have a dynamic and experienced team of educators, allied health professionals, play specialists and industry experts who continue to drive our mission and inspire play for families around the world. Education is truly at the heart of everything we do. By sharing our passion and experience we can authentically engage with our amazing play community of over 822k followers across the globe through our social media channels. These platforms provide a unique social listening tool for us to connect with parents and customers to better understand the ways they’re seeking to play with CONNETIX. We know families are looking for toys that will engage children in meaningful ways and provide endless play

possibilities to be enjoyed again and again. Particularly for the preschool sector, customers love the wide range of hands-on learning and sensory benefits of CONNETIX play in helping children with everyday life skills such as spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, perseverance, self-regulation, communication and more. Another standout for our customers is seeking quality toys that grow with children as they learn and develop, and ultimately, toys that bring families of all ages together through play. By continuing to connect and listen to our customers we can ensure that we’re delivering products that meet their needs and lead industry innovations. To make this possible, we’ve learned to be agile and expand our teams and resources to meet the growing global demand. Although business expansion brings a new set of challenges, we’ve embraced each opportunity which has allowed us to achieve many incredible milestones. The next 12 months will be huge for our brand, with the most product releases and our biggest innovations yet. Alongside many developments in the pipeline, our ultimate goal is to see CONNETIX available to, and in the hands of kids everywhere. So, we will continue to spread the word and share the joy of open-ended play in fun and innovative ways. Stay tuned, the next chapter for CONNETIX is set to be truly exciting.

INDUSTRY ROUNDTABLE when he walked in the dining room and saw us all looking back at him is unforgettable.” Gary: “There are several, but the one that really stands out is from last year. We had our Paddington Bench as a photo opportunity, and it created a real talking point among visitors. Those retailers who supported the brand went on to have great success off the back of the Paddington in Peru movie, which we're still very much experiencing.” AS WE HEAD INTO SUMMER, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY TALKING POINTS FOR THE PRESCHOOL TOY BUSINESS IN THE UK?

Left: Orchard Toys will be showcasing its new baby and toddler range at the show.

Simon: “Independent toy stores are a huge sector for us; they’re an opportunity to present and sell a much broader range of our games, jigsaws and books. Toymaster is a fantastic show to meet the indie owners and managers; they’re our eyes and ears on the high street and incredibly valued customers.” Gary: “The show provides a great opportunity to meet with existing customers and potential new retailers face to face. It allows us to spend quality time with them and the opportunity to understand their business, as well as learning about their needs, wants and struggles, so we can plan with these elements in mind. It's also a great platform for us to demonstrate how we currently support our heartland retailers and to showcase all the new brands and products we've been working on since we last saw them.” Katy: “Our independent retailer base is a high priority for our business. The event offers an outstanding opportunity for one-to-one catch ups - and a chance to find out how business is going for our independent retail partners. In so doing, giving us an opportunity to explore first hand ways that we can develop partnerships and support their businesses further.” Phil: “Casdon is a third-generation family business, and independent retailers have been a huge support to us since the company was founded in 1946, their continued loyalty is something we truly value. Exhibiting at Toymaster gives us the chance to meet with them in one place, hear feedback direct from the shop floor, and understand what is happening in their world, from high street trends to consumer behaviours. That insight is invaluable and helps us stay aligned with their needs.”

Jacqueline: “Licences are becoming increasingly important, and innovation remains key; cutting through to the consumer is getting harder and we are all having to be more creative with our marketing plans.” Simon: “Licensed product seems to be a key talking point and is certainly having a really positive impact on consumer spend at the moment.” Below: Ravensburger’s Toymaster line-up brings together the best from its broad portfolio.

DO YOU HAVE A STANDOUT MEMORY FROM THE SHOW OVER THE YEARS? Phil: “What makes Toymaster special is the sense of community it fosters. Over the years, we’ve built genuine, long standing relationships with many of our independent accounts, some of whom fondly remember working with our father and grandfather, which makes those conversations often feel more like catching up with old friends than traditional business meetings, and that’s something we treasure.” Simon: “Helping Yogi celebrate his birthday one year. We provided Yogi face masks for everyone, and his reaction

WHAT IMPACT COULD THE NEW TARIFFS IMPOSED BY THE US HAVE ON THE INDUSTRY?

Jacqueline: “Rising costs and prices, lack of innovation, manufacturers taking less risks, more store closures, more US stock hitting our shores… and the factories pushing directly into countries with lower/no tariffs in a much bigger way.” Julie: “While the new tariffs will create significant challenges, we are focused on adapting and exploring alternative markets. Our ambition to grow in Europe and beyond means we’re always looking for innovative solutions to navigate any obstacles.” Simon: “The new tariffs have created a lot of uncertainty around supply, pricing and shipping and until we know if trade agreements will be reached and the terms and timings of those agreements, it’s difficult to predict the longer term impact on the industry.” Katy: “This is a continually changing situation and is presenting challenges for most businesses. At Ravensburger, we’re monitoring the effects of the situation on an ongoing basis. With the majority of our manufacturing carried out in Europe we hope to limit the impact. However we are, of course, keeping in mind factors such as raw materials.”

IN CONVERSATION WITH: LE TOY VAN

30 AND THRIVING

Known for creating innovative, safe and imaginative wooden toys that inspire children to explore, create and learn through play, Le Toy Van is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025. Steven Le Van tells PPS how the company has evolved – and where it’s headed next.

S

ince Georges Le Van created Le Toy Van’s first product, a wooden doll’s house, in 1995, the company has grown into an internationally recognised name in the toy industry, with products sold in over 100 countries worldwide. However, the journey from set-up to success has had its share of ups and downs, says Georges’ son Steven Le Van, who helms Le Toy Van along with his wife Marie. “Over three decades markets have changed, the retail landscape has altered, as have our lives, and those of our staff… But the top line is that for a family company making traditional toys, with no gimmicks, we’re profitable, we’ve brought part of our manufacturing back to the UK, and we’re looking at expanding our ranges. Our business story, which is also our family story, is a positive one.” One benefit of being a longstanding business is the level of trust that Le Toy Van has built up with its retailers and consumers. “It means that if we come up with a bit of a wacky idea, we can go for it. Our longevity gives us the leverage to try new things,” Steven states. And new things keep coming… From wooden hair straighteners to ‘disposable’ coffee cups decorated in on-trend colours, Le Toy Van’s FSC-certified wooden toys allow young children to emulate modern life as they see it unfolding, while new products are regularly

added to the line-up to reflect wider cultural changes; an upcoming Barista Café set, for instance, nods to the public pivot away from less-than-eco-friendly coffee pod machines back to bean-to-cup models. “Everything is devised and designed in-house,” Steven says. “We’re a small team of just 10 people, but we’re a really productive unit. As a company making wooden toys we’re definitely benefiting from the current sustainability and Scandi design trends, and we’re also tapping into the miniature trend.” Le Toy Van’s 30th anniversary party will be very much a family affair, with Steven and Marie opening up their home (also their company HQ) to Le Toy Van’s business partners in May. “We’re also celebrating with a special Anniversary Collection – a curated selection of some of our most iconic designs from the 3,000 or so that we’ve produced over the past three decades,” says Steven. “We’d love some of our customers who have tried us over those 30 years to revisit us, and see how far we’ve come from doll’s houses. We have a core range of 150 or so bestselling products spanning vehicles to animals and role-play sets. And this year, with the cost of living crisis in mind, we even put our prices down. Our aim is to be accessible, but still aspirational.” Below left: Husband and wife team Steven and Marie are the driving force behind Le Toy Van. SECTOR FOCUS: CREATIVE PLAY Inset: The Puppet Company’s range is soon to be expanded with new MicroMonster finger puppets.

CREATIVE THINKING

As well as providing a welcome distraction from screens, creative play, role play and arts and crafts products offer value-added play experiences for preschoolers, stimulating their imagination, building their confidence and helping to develop their fine motor skills. Some of the leading suppliers in the sector tell PPS about their bestselling products and latest launches.

W

hen it comes to getting creative, it’s never too early to start. “Experts in early childhood education say that age-appropriate, easy-to-handle and safe tools should be given to children from the age of one so they can fully develop their creativity through colouring,” says Maped Helix’s head of marketing Lianne Fletcher. “Colouring offers even very young children immense freedom and an incentive to experiment. What’s more, regular use of pencils or felt pens from an early age helps in developing the fine motor skills that enable children

to eventually learn to write.” Maped’s new Jungle Fever range, for children of 12 months and up, is designed to be easy for toddlers to grasp and meets the highest regulatory safety requirements for young users, says Lianne. “The felt pens come with washable ink and are fitted with safety tips that are locked to prevent them from being pulled out or swallowed. The Jungle Fever scissors feature round-

tipped stainless-steel blades and ergonomic handles designed for small hands, whilst the graphite pencils come with finger guides for developing a triangular grip.” Janod’s offering also includes arts and crafts products for the tiniest of hands. “Janod’s new Large Stickers are suitable for children as young as 18 Below: Puppet sets featuring much-loved story and film characters are a hit for Bigjigs.

SECTOR FOCUS: CREATIVE PLAY months and come in shapes and sizes that are easy to handle,” says Neil Montgomery, commercial director and UK country manager for Janod brand owner Juratoys. “They are definitely going to be a hit, as they’re so helpful at keeping little ones busy on the go. “Creative play is so important for preschoolers. Janod’s products are designed to engage little ones and build their imagination, but also expand their key motor skills, so there is an educational element involved, too.” Another company extending its core product ranges to engage younger children is Craft Buddy. In response to customer feedback, it has reimagined its popular Crystal Art kits for preschoolers, introducing larger 10–12mm gems and an ergonomic pick-up pen to help little crafters aged four and up get started with confidence. “Crystal Art Junior brings the same sparkling creativity that fans love, but makes crafting more accessible than ever,” says head of marketing OraRuth Rother. “The debut collection features a magical line-up of beloved characters, from Peter Rabbit and Stitch to Simba, and vibrant designs that little ones can proudly display once complete.” Mess-free craft is high on parents’ wish lists when shopping for preschool products, and Crayola caters to this need with its bestselling Color Wonder line of pens and colouring books. Thanks to its unique formula, the ink shows only on the Color Wonder pages, not on clothes, carpets or walls. “We keep the range up to date and relevant for preschoolers by working with their favourite preschool characters, including Peppa, PAW Patrol and Bluey; we have the hotly anticipated Lilo & Stitch coming soon to shelves,” says Jade Childs,

marketing controller at Vivid Goliath Group. “Color Wonder is a perfect travel companion for busy preschoolers on days out, at the restaurant or on

holidays, so we see a great spike in sales over the holiday period.” Later this year, Crayola will be partnering with Paramount to launch PAW Patrol Washimals. “The addition of six of the PAW Patrol pups sold across various pocket money price points, along with the Fire Hydrant Playset, allows PAW Patrol fans the creativity to colour their favourite characters time and time again,” says Jade. Licensed characters have a strong appeal for preschoolers,

agrees Alice Smith, marketing manager at Smiffys. “Costumes of familiar characters from stories or films excite children and encourage them to bring their favourite stories to life through play. Our Gruffalo & Friends range, which includes The Gruffalo, Zog, Stick Man, Room on the Broom and more, remains consistently popular, and is perfect for role play and themed parties. We’re excited to bring new licences on board this year, including Peter Rabbit and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Dressing up is about more than putting on a costume, Alice asserts. “Role play helps with social development and communication skills, as well as helping children to understand more about the world around them. Using costumes during play can fuel original thinking and build confidence.” Commotion’s in-house brand tickit is home to award-winning wooden playsets, vehicles and figures designed for storytelling fun, as well as wooden tools for budding builders, chefs and hairdressers. Product development is driven by customers, who frequently request new products or ranges focused on a specific area of children’s development, says Commotion’s ceo James Shepherd.

“Our team works on bringing those products to life, and every item then undergoes rigorous testing by children in nursery and school settings,” he says. “Creative play is essential for children’s development; it encourages imagination, problemsolving and social skills. SECTOR FOCUS: CREATIVE PLAY at The Puppet Company. “Our Finger Puppets are consistent best sellers. They’re accessible, versatile and affordable – their miniature size means they can join you for adventures wherever you go.” The Puppet Company’s new Micro-Monsters will be launching shortly. “They are quirky, palmsized miniature monster finger puppets, suitable from 12 months, each with their own character and personality. commitment to this area drives our product innovation for the tickit brand, and ensures we effectively meet the evolving needs of children.” Creative toys can be used to impart important early learning messages, explains Clarissa Patel, marketing manager at Toynamics, a subsidiary of the Hape Group. “Hape’s Green Planet Explorers collection features animal-based playsets designed to teach children all the important sustainability topics. Our products break down big concepts into more understandable play activities for children, helping them create their own narratives.” Music, of course, also falls under the creative-play umbrella. A major new product launch for Hape for 2025 has been the Pixel Piano. “This product has won awards across the world, and we are delighted to be bringing it to the UK market,” says Clarissa. “With sensory play, guided melodies and colour recognition, this is a great piece to elevate fine motor skills and hand eye co-ordination.” From kits for budding doctors and firefighters to vets and builders, German brand small foot offers a variety of role-play products through its distributor toys2market. “Watching where a child goes in their little imaginative world whilst playing with small foot toys is a joy,” says Vicki Marler-Hausen, marketing consultant at toys2market. “The company’s goal is to create timeless play experiences that are both fun and educational, and many of their toys are designed with multiple play functions to grow with the child and provide long-lasting engagement. “We’ll be unveiling small foot’s new dinosaur-themed preschool toys at the Toymaster Show in Harrogate, so we’re looking forward to seeing the response to these and showing visiting independent retailers just how well made these wooden toys are.” Creative play toys can come at very pocket-friendly prices, argues Sam Lockey, sales director

new Micro-Monster Display Box set for added impact and to showcase the offering as we continue introducing new POS solutions,” says Sam. Bigjigs Toys’ offering also includes puppets, following its recent acquisition of Fiesta Crafts. “Fiesta Crafts’ stand-out toys include hand and finger puppet sets based on much-loved tales, such as Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz, which are ideal for introducing younger children to creative play through the art of storytelling,” says Liz Ireland, Bigjigs Toys’ founder and md. Creative play is vital for children’s development, argues Liz, and its importance is

reflected throughout Bigjigs Toys’ offering, which extends from dress-up that fosters little ones’ curiosity to crafting tools such as the Junior Art Easel and French Knitting Doll that help develop manual dexterity. “When children engage in creative activities such as role-play and storytelling, they develop their language and communication skills through these interactions,” says Liz. “Simultaneously, arts and crafts can be a great way for preschoolers to express their feelings and learn to think for themselves. Painting, for example, can help them to problem solve as they can decide what colours to use and learn what to do if things don’t go to plan.” Below left: tickit’s Woodland Trail Set recently won top prize in the Eco Toys category at the 2025 Dadsnet Awards. CRAFTING FOR PRESCHOOLERS

LARGE SPARKLES FOR SMALL HANDS Craft Buddy, the UK-based craft brand known for its bestselling Crystal Art kits, is bringing a touch of sparkle to the youngest of crafters with the launch of its new Crystal Art Junior range, a collection specially designed for preschool children.

T

he inspiration behind Crystal Art Junior came from a very personal place, explains Gary Wadhwani, co-director at Craft Buddy: “The idea came from my codirector Dino, who’s also my brother. We both have preschool-age children who could see the Crystal Art products in both our homes and wanted to craft, but with little fingers and hands found it hard to get to grips with the small parts. So a bit like LEGO did with DUPLO, we have created a version for little fingers.” And so, Crystal Art Junior was born. “We decided to spend time investing in research and tooling that could make Crystal Art work for preschoolers,” says Gary. “We wanted to create a product that would keep their attention span for a limited amount of time, offer immediate gratification and support hand-eye coordination, but was also relevant to characters and entertainment they engaged with on a daily basis.” The product range has been created by observing the way young children react and play with crafting. “We wanted to get the perspective of the children and through our research we made every decision based upon their play patterns and techniques to ensure the product we delivered gives them a great early year’s crafting experience.” explains Gary. Designed with children in mind, the kits feature larger 10-12mm crystals, a bigger pick-up pen and a larger holding tray that makes separating and organising gems easier. “If children don’t want to use the pick-up pen, the gems are large enough for them to use their fingers and position as required,” says Sergio Anna, head of product. “It’s all about supporting their attention span, ensuring ease of use and resulting in a picture that can be created simply, while maximising enjoyment, in the company of a supervising adult.” It is launching with five high

profile characters, including Disney’s Stitch which is currently riding high with fans of all ages, as well as the evergreen children’s favourites Peter Rabbit, Groot from Despicable Me, Grogu from The Mandalorian and Simba, everyone’s favourite lion cub. “They make up the perfect group of characters for a younger crafting audience, who can be crafted individually, or make a wonderful display of five pieces of Crystal Art creativity,” says Gary. “We will also potentially look to add some of our own original designs subject to further research.” In terms of retail, the Crystal Art Junior kits suit classic crafting stores, as well as those which are focused on children’s toys or home décor. “Crystal Art Junior makes for excellent sparkling bedroom and play space décor but could equally be enjoyed in preschools and childcare environments where daily creative play is key,” comments Gary. The range is also available directly from www.craftbuddyshop.com and Amazon. As for what’s next, Craft Buddy is already planning further innovations in the preschool crafting space. “Crafting is an excellent alternative to screen time and provides early adoption of creative play through colour, self-satisfaction and happiness at creating an individual piece of art,” says Sergio. “We can’t say too much right now, except to say watch this space!”

SECTOR FOCUS: TRAVEL & HOLIDAY

Inset: Designed for stylish parents on the go, the new iCandy Pip compact-fold stroller weighs just 7kg.

GOING PLACES

Summer means holidays, day trips and outdoor adventures, but being on the move with little ones isn’t always a breeze. PPS talks to the companies whose innovative products aim to simplify parents’ lives and take the hassle out of travelling, freeing up families to have fun.

A

s any parent knows, when it comes to getting out and about with kids, a lightweight portable stroller is worth its weight in gold. “Our Libelle and Orfeo strollers both fold down to hand luggage compatible size, which is great for planes and for when you’re fitting multiple things in the car,” says CYBEX’s Luke Burns, general manager for the UK and Ireland. “The Orfeo also lies fully flat, which is ideal for naps on the go.” Product longevity is key in buying decisions, Luke points out: “Parents don’t want to be buying multiple products for the same purpose over the years, so the Orfeo is suitable from birth up to 4 years old.” Convenience and portability are also important to parents seeking travel solutions, says Marc Kelly, md of CuddleCo, distributor of Doona and Inglesina. “Parents want something that’s easy to carry, simple to store and quick to transition from one use to another. Safety is just as important

– products must provide peace of mind for parents, with features that protect their little ones. “The Doona Car Seat & Stroller ticks every one of these boxes,” Marc continues. “It’s a rear-facing car seat that transforms into a stroller at the touch of a button. Its compact design makes it perfect for tight spaces, plus, it’s certified for air travel.” iCandy’s latest launch, the compactfold Pip stroller, is another great choice for jet-setting families. IATA cabin-approved and hassle-free to use, weighing in at just 7kg and featuring a smooth one-hand fold mechanism, Pip is suitable from birth and designed with a spacious seat unit (up to 25kg),

large wheels, advanced suspension and a UPF50+ canopy. “It’s perfect for families travelling abroad,” says iCandy head of sales Cath Needham, “but its youthful and bold design also caters to urban dwellers and grandparents looking for a practical pushchair purchase.” Maxi-Cosi’s extensive product range includes a wealth of travel-friendly options. Nicola Coletti, Dorel trade marketing manager UKI, highlights the new Maxi-Cosi Nomad XL Plus car seat: “It’s the ideal travel companion, weighing just 6kg with a slim 44cm width. It’s designed specifically for travel and families that regularly transfer between vehicles. The Maxi-Cosi Calao Light is another standout. It’s an ultra-lightweight travel cot that folds down compactly

and sets up in seconds, making it ideal for holidays or overnight stays with family and friends.” For families heading to the beach, festivals or on camping trips, WonderFold Stroller Wagons make transporting kids – and associated gear – child’s play. “The W-series offers spacious seating for up to four children, with 5-point harnesses for safety, and a high canopy to protect little ones from the sun,” says WonderFold UK sales director Phil Bosher. “The storage space makes it easy to haul coolers, tents and supplies. Furthermore, it can be used as a travel cot or playpen when wheels are removed or the brake applied, to save packing an extra travel cot for younger infants.” Sometimes, of course, parents are looking for hands-free solutions for carrying their little ones – and that’s where Hippychick’s Hipseat comes in. “It’s a brilliantly priced travel essential that not only supports the parent’s back and posture but also folds away neatly. It’s great for going where buggies can’t,” says marketing manager Annaliese Deakin. Hippychick’s other travel essentials include the Tron Disposable Travel Potty and the Dooky range of sunshades, safety wristbands and other on-the-go essentials; a particular favourite with festival goers is

Dooky’s adjustable 2-in-1 Baby/ Toddler Ear Protection. In the lead-up to the travel season, Hippychick curates a dedicated ‘Summer Collection’ of its best products for retailers. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for our retail partners to maximise sales by offering high-quality, practical products that meet the needs of families during the summer months,” says Annaliese. Mepal takes a similarly proactive approach to marketing during the summer months. “We invest in influencer collaborations that bring the Mepal story to Right: BIBS’ Pacifier Box doubles as a handy sterilising unit. life,§demonstrating how our products fit into everyday summer adventures, and creative social media campaigns that focus on snack hacks, packing tips and family travel inspiration,” says UK country manager Joe Stadler. Mepal’s leakproof drinks bottles and snack containers are easy to clean for parents’ peace of mind and help avoid mess on the go, Joe points out. “A standout is our insulated flip-up bottle, which keeps drinks cold for up to 12 hours. Our large Bento-style lunchbox features multiple compartments to keep different foods separate and fresh, while our fruit box comes with a child-friendly fork and a leakproof seal, so parents can confidently toss it in a beach bag without spills.” BIBS products also make feeding on the go effortless, points out regional marketing manager EMEA Peggy Juche. “The BIBS Baby Bottle is lightweight, durable and easy to clean. Its ergonomic shape fits easily into travel bags, and the thoughtfully designed teat supports natural feeding, even when routines are disrupted.” The BIBS Pacifier Box is another must-have for travelling families. “It keeps pacifiers clean and accessible, whether clipped to a changing bag or packed in a suitcase. It even doubles as a sterilising box, offering extra convenience for parents while away from home,” Peggy says. BIBS’ sustainable pacifiers and feeding products are a hit with ecoconscious parents, as are products from Swimovations, the UK company known for its Konfidence swim jacket and reusable AquaNappy. “One of the reasons our one-size AquaNappy is so popular is because it can replace huge volumes of planet-killing disposables. If luggage space is at a premium, then two AquaNappies will save a suitcase worth of space,” says Swimovations’ owner and ceo Andrew Regan. “We’ll also soon be launching a new range of e-Flex sun protection swimwear, which uses recycled plastics in place of oil-based neoprene.”
