EDITOR’S COMMENT September/October 2026
W
ow. What a night it was at the Excellence in Housewares Awards 2026. It was incredible to be able to join with you all again and celebrate your successes over the past year. We are lucky enough to be part of a warm, supportive and welcoming industry, filled with people who celebrate each other’s successes and that’s always really clear to see at the awards. I’d like to extend an enormous thanks to those who support the event, enabling us to honour suppliers, retailers and individuals each year. Without you, it simply wouldn’t be possible. It’s a team effort, with backing from sponsors, judges, entrants and those who buy tickets and tables to attend every year – we appreciate each and every one of you. With an even higher number of entries this year, the judges were blown away by the quality of the products and retailers we were able to put in front of them. The entries were again testament to the innovation, determination and drive in our industry to continue creating wonderful products for the home and to present them to consumers in incredible shops up and down the country. This year, we added a new category – Rising Star – which celebrates individuals who are new to the industry and making a big impact. Huge congratulations to Harrods’ Kitty RoseWalker, our inaugural winner.
I must also make a special mention to our Outstanding Achievement Award winner this year. RKW founder, Rob Sutton was a popular choice and it was easy to see why. With an incredible back story in creating RKW and building it to what we see today, Rob also works hard to support various charities and good causes. If you were lucky enough to see him on stage, or know him personally, you’ll also know he’s the life and soul of any party – we hope there’s been lots more celebrating since. This issue includes a roll of honour of the winners in each of the categories, as well as their reactions to winning, not forgetting the annual party photos of the night’s less formal moments. I hope you enjoy reliving the evening’s events. And if you weren’t there, why not? Make sure you grab yourself a ticket to next year’s event. Also in this issue, we have a deep dive into both the knives sector and the cleaning, storage and utility category, along with a look at what housewares retailers are expecting for the all-important golden quarter. Of course, there’s all the usual news, views and insight in there too. Enjoy the issue.

OXO appoints Matthew Ryle as its new chef in residence
Westwing has unveiled an exclusive collaboration with Victoria Beckham, marking the designer’s homeware debut. Inspired by the idea of Serving Style, a modern interpretation of ‘fashion for the table’, the collection is rooted in Victoria Beckham’s appreciation for the art of hosting and the thoughtful details that shape a memorable time at the table. Bringing together Victoria Beckham’s creative vision and Westwing’s expertise in home products, the collection reimagines everyday gatherings as elevated experiences. “Home is where some of life’s most meaningful moments happen, and this collaboration felt like a natural way to explore that world through the same lens of design, craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines everything we do as a brand,” said Victoria Beckham. Inspired by the arts and crafts movement of 19th-century Britain, hammered finishes, a refined monochrome palette and organic silhouettes create a design language that feels timeless and modern. Signature details inspired by Victoria’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections, including chain motifs and jewellery-inspired accents, lend the pieces a sense of sophistication, while subtle shell elements introduce a touch of playfulness. Unified through a palette of whites, silver tones and hints of hunter green, the collection offers a refined and contemporary vision of hosting. Presented in bespoke co-branded packaging designed to reflect the aesthetic of both brands, every detail has been considered from product to presentation. “Partnering with Victoria Beckham is a defining moment for Westwing. Her unmistakable aesthetic has shaped contemporary fashion for years, and we are proud to bring that same vision into the world of Beautiful Living. This collection creates a natural dialogue between fashion and interiors, offering Design Lovers a new way to express their personal style at home,” said Andreas Hoerning, ceo of Westwing.
Inset: The collection translates Victoria Beckham’s distinctive design codes into the world of interiors.

Prestige announces major rebrand Prestige, a trusted cookware brand since 1938, has unveiled a major rebrand transforming the heritage name into a modernised, design-led lifestyle brand with a new identity and new cookware and bakeware ranges. Becky Firth, head of product at Meyer Group, said: “The rebrand marks an exciting new chapter for Prestige as we reposition the brand across both cookware and bakeware, giving us the opportunity to meet the changing needs of today’s consumer, while building on quality and performance. “The new colourways bring a fresh,

ReBorn celebrates three years in business
ZUCHEX hails 2026 show a success The 36th ZUCHEX International Home and Kitchenware Fair was successfully held at the Tüyap Fair and Congress Center in Istanbul from 9-12 September, 2026. ZUCHEX 2026 brought together 23,809 professional visitors from 119 countries and 1,500+ brands from 15 countries from the home and kitchenware industry in Istanbul. Over four days, the fair served as an important meeting point for international trade, where new business connections were established, a comprehensive range of products was showcased and industry developments were shared. The Hosted Buyer Programme provided exhibitors with opportunities to expand into global markets and establish high-quality business connections. A total of 350 senior professional buyers from 49 countries held one-to-one B2B meetings with exhibiting brands. ZuchXTalks brought industry professionals together with expert speakers, adding a knowledge and inspiration-driven dimension to the fair. Launched this year, the ZUCHEX Insight Lounge enriched the fair experience by creating spaces where industry professionals could share experiences, insights and perspectives on the sector. ZUCHEX Workshop offered visitors three days of creative, hands-on workshop experiences where they could explore a variety of techniques. In collaboration with Uşak University, Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, Terra Cappadocia Women’s Initiative Production and Business Cooperative and Istanbul Erguvan Women’s Cooperative, workshops included batik bag dyeing, overglaze porcelain painting and more. ZUCHEX Designathon brought together the creativity of young designers with the industry’s manufacturing capabilities. SUSTAINABILITY AT ZUCHEX integrated sustainability into the fair experience, supporting environmental awareness. ZUCHEX 2026 received extensive coverage across 212 print, digital and broadcast media with a total reach 15,060,683.
Above: The range has expanded from kitchenware to bathroom and recycling products.
Three years ago, ReBorn set out with an ambition: to prove waste could be transformed into beautifully designed products that people would choose for their homes. Three years and 53 tonnes of transformed waste later, the brand is celebrating a milestone that demonstrates what British design and manufacturing can look like. ReBorn has now made more than 100,000 products and grown from its initial kitchen range into recycling and bathroom products. Waste collected and processed in the UK is given a new purpose as homeware that is also manufactured in Britain. ReBorn takes recycled materials and turns them into contemporary homewares, designed and manufactured here in the UK. Brian Walmsley, founder and ceo of ReBorn, explained: “We never wanted this to look like a recycled product. We wanted people to choose it because it looks beautiful and works brilliantly and then be delighted to discover that it was made in Britain from British waste. 53 tonnes is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, but we’re really only just getting started.” That philosophy has helped ReBorn turn 53 tonnes of waste into useful, good-looking products during its first three years. A lifecycle assessment by Brunel University found ReBorn products can have a 79% lower carbon footprint than comparable products made in the Far East from virgin plastic. Amy Hooper, group head of sustainability and innovation at Biffa commented: “ReBorn is a brilliant example of how circular economy principles can be put into practice. Plastic collected and processed by Biffa here in the UK is being transformed, helping to keep valuable materials in use for longer and retain their value beyond their original purpose. “As well as incorporating recycled content, the products are designed with future recycling in mind. We’re proud to be working with ReBorn and to have played a part in what they’ve achieved in their first three years.”

The Inspired Home Show joins with AmericasMart Atlanta ANDMORE and the International Housewares Association (IHA) have announced a new, eight-year partnership that will bring The Inspired Home Show to AmericasMart Atlanta, co-located alongside Winter Atlanta Market, beginning in January 2028. The move brings The Inspired Home Show into a permanent, cross-category marketplace model for the first time, adding year-round showrooms to its presence and grows AmericasMart’s dedicated housewares and tabletop footprint tenfold. Shifting from a temporary-only trade show held every March in Chicago, the show will operate from dedicated neighbourhoods throughout AmericasMart’s campus, split evenly between showrooms and trade show space. “This is the next chapter for our show that has always been about connection, bringing the industry together to discover products, build partnerships and grow businesses,” said Derek Miller, president and ceo, International Housewares Association. “Atlanta gives us a platform to do that in a
whole new way, together creating the biggest sourcing marketplace for the industry. We’re proud to build this next chapter with a partner who shares our commitment to the people who make this community so special.” The Inspired Home Show will be presented alongside Winter Atlanta Market, AmericasMart’s premier gift and home

show, giving buyers access to The Inspired Home Show’s exhibitors and the existing 6,000+ complementary gift and home brands in a single trip. The partnership follows the model ANDMORE established in 2023 when ICFA moved its 60+-year-old Casual Market to AmericasMart, a partnership that has grown steadily every year since. “We’re grateful for IHA’s trust in choosing ANDMORE and AmericasMart for The Inspired Home Show’s next chapter,” said Amory Wooden, evp and chief revenue officer, ANDMORE. “This partnership dramatically expands our housewares and tabletop offerings, giving buyers even more reason to source across categories in one trip. And it signals that the permanent, cross-category marketplace model has true staying power in our industry.” The timing is central to the partnership’s value. Winter Atlanta Market provides buyers with their first major sourcing trip of the calendar year and is where retailers set assortment and sourcing direction for the months ahead. The Inspired Home Show’s final Chicago show will take place 9-11 March, 2027, ahead of its Atlanta debut at Winter Atlanta Market, 11–16 January, 2028.

Housewares industry spreads 1,651 smiles in September People across the home improvement and enhancement industry logged 1,651 moments of kindness as part of Rainy Day Trust’s Thousand Smiles September campaign. The original target was 1,000 smiles. Thousand Smiles September set out to bring people together in a positive and accessible way. Teams were encouraged to complete one random act of kindness each day and log their smiles on a live leaderboard. Alongside the challenge, participants could also take part in a series of short wellbeing videos and quizzes. The campaign also raised vital funds that will go back into supporting people within the industry. Anna Skeats, ceo of Rainy Day Trust, said: “This year has been tough for so many people in our industry and we know a lot of them are carrying more than they let on. Thousand Smiles September was our way of bringing everyone together around something simple: noticing each other. None of it is complicated, but every one of those 1,651 smiles was a moment where someone felt seen.” Rainy Day Trust’s Annual Challenge Series will return with Mad March Million in March 2027. Dunelm reports solid FY26 performance Dunelm has announced its preliminary results for the 52 weeks to 27 June 2026. Sales for the year were £1,825m, up 3.1% on FY25; with digital participation up 2ppts to 42%. Gross margin increased 10bps to 52.5% and profit before tax was £211m, in line with the prior year. During the year, Dunelm opened two new stores; a smaller store in Wandsworth and a superstore in Kingston-upon-Thames. The Yeovil store was also reopened following its closure due to a serious fire. The Dunelm app was also launched, with beta AI-powered shopping assistant added in July. Looking ahead, Dunelm says it remains ‘very confident in our fundamental strengths and growth opportunity’. As a result of the extended period of unusually hot weather, however, the retailer saw significantly softer trading in first six weeks of FY27. Strong online conversion and increasing store footfall give confidence in the current proposition and the retailer
has seen better trading following cooler weather. Clo Moriarty, chief executive officer, commented: “We delivered a solid performance for the year, growing sales, maintaining profits and generating strong cash returns for shareholders. “Over the last year, we have taken a deep and honest look at our business and the opportunities Above: A new Winning Hearts & Homes campaign is launching to strengthen Dunelm’s market position. ahead to better serve our customers and drive the group’s “To capture our opportunity, we are performance. Made from premium food-grade silicone, the lids are BPA, BPS, lead, latex, peroxide and phthalate free and are microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe, as well as suitable for use in ovens up to 220°C. “We know that the Charles Viancin brand holds a special place in our industry, as a pioneer within its category. We’re thrilled to be bringing these iconic pieces back to UK retailers and helping them to fill a (bright and colourful) gap in their stores,” said Marc Kinsey, sales manager, HAUS.

Next has published its H1 results, showing an increase of 7.7% in full price sales in the first six months. Group profit before tax for the period was up 10.5% to £569m. The retailer has, therefore, increased its profit guidance for the full year by £12m to £1,255m. The increase is the result of a small upgrade in sales expectations and some additional cost savings, mainly in warehousing. Next said the first half was ‘much better than we originally anticipated, both in the UK and overseas’. Online UK sales were up 7.4%, while retail store sales were down by 1.7%, with a total UK sales figure up by 3.6%, compared to original guidance of +1.3%. The Next brand in the UK fared less well, with sales down by £7m, while wholly-owned brands and licences were up £35m and third party brands were up £41m. Next had planned for its own brand sales to be down in the UK, following disruption at a major competitor and the dramatic growth of wholly owned and thirdparty brands. Below: H1 results showed an increase of 7.7% in full price sales.

RKW announces appointment and promotions Philippa Simons has joined RKW with nearly 30 years of retail buying and category experience, while Simon Oliver and Luke Taylor have been promoted. Above: (l – r) Simon Oliver, Philippa Simons and Luke Taylor Beginning her career on Asda’s graduate scheme in 1994, Philippa moved into housewares buying before joining Lakeland in 2005. During her 20-year tenure, she progressed from senior kitchenware buyer to head of buying, overseeing buying across all product categories and leading Lakeland’s design, quality and Far East sourcing functions. Most recently, Philippa held the position of category manager for cook & dine at Dunelm. Philippa said: “Having spent much of my career on the retail side of the industry, I’m excited to bring that perspective to RKW and work closely with both customers and brand partners. “There is a significant opportunity to build on the strength of the housewares portfolio, develop innovative product ranges and create solutions that meet the evolving needs of both retailers and consumers.” Luke Taylor has been promoted to sales director after seven years with RKW. Since joining the business, Luke has held several senior commercial positions, including senior national account manager, head of ecommerce and most recently ecommerce director. In his new role, Luke will lead the wider sales function, bringing a deep understanding of RKW’s customer base, brands and digital growth opportunities. As part of the leadership changes, Simon Oliver has been appointed group commercial director, expanding his responsibility across the wider RKW business. Since joining RKW more than eight years ago as sales director, Simon has played a key role in driving commercial growth and strengthening strategic customer relationships. Most recently serving as commercial director for home & outdoor, he brings more than two decades of experience across sales, retail and commercial leadership. Simon said: “Philippa’s appointment brings exceptional retail, product and category expertise to the business, together with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing today’s retail environment. “Luke’s promotion is thoroughly deserved and reflects the significant contribution he has made to RKW over the past seven years. His knowledge of our customers, brands and commercial operations will be instrumental as we continue to develop our sales strategy and accelerate growth.” These appointments form part of RKW’s ongoing investment in leadership, category development and customer relationships, positioning the business strongly for its next phase of growth.

The offering includes Rubbermaid Brilliance food storage containers, as well as pantry containers designed to keep dry goods fresh and organised. ESA rolls out in-store demos ESA Sales has introduced a structured programme of in-store demonstrations for its brand partners. The results of the demonstrations have been strong with participating stores achieving sales uplifts of up to 500%. Alongside the sales increases, ESA Sales designs the activity to achieve a range of objectives, including training staff, building confidence and deepening product understanding. Chris Hoyle, managing director, commented: “When retail teams feel knowledgeable and
empowered, they sell with conviction. They recommend with authenticity. They become advocates for the brand. “And then comes the halo effect, the most powerful driver of long-term growth. A consumer who buys a product during a demonstration goes home and tells friends and family about it. Word of mouth spreads, new customers arrive asking for the product by name and repeat business follows. The store becomes known locally for stocking ‘that great product PROGRESSIVE

BRAND PROFILE: PRESTIGE Inset: The new proposition offers affordable premium for every kitchen. Below: The Stainless Steel Edition offers coloured exteriors and stainless steel interiors.
Prestige has been part of British kitchens for generations. But kitchens have changed. Consumers have changed. And the role cookware plays within the home has changed with them. That was the starting point for one of the biggest transformations in the brand’s history.
R
ather than simply refreshing its identity, the team set out to understand what a modern cookware brand should look and feel like and where an established name such as Prestige could bring something genuinely different to the category. The opportunity became clear. Cookware remained heavily weighted towards function, with black and grey dominating the fixture, while consumers were increasingly treating the kitchen as an extension of their personal style. Prestige research found that 70% of branded cookware ranges were black, while 61% of younger consumers wanted cookware that coordinated with their kitchen aesthetic. At the same time, the market had become increasingly polarised: functional but uninspiring products at one end and beautiful but often inaccessible premium brands at the other. Prestige saw an opportunity to occupy the space between. The result is a new proposition: Affordable Premium for Every Kitchen. Combining contemporary design, trusted performance and accessible price points.
PRESTIGE, REIMAGINED STYLE AND SUBSTANCE The transformation goes far beyond colour. Prestige has redesigned its cookware from the ground up, creating a distinctive new design language intended to feel as relevant within a contemporary kitchen as furniture, lighting or home accessories. At its heart is a new signature curved silhouette. Consumer testing showed an initial preference for the curved profile over traditional straight-sided cookware, with consumers associating it with modernity, aesthetics, premium quality and ease of use. The softer profile is paired with the uniquely designed, ergonomic ‘P’ handles, glass lids, tonal interiors and refined brass-effect detailing, creating a recognisable aesthetic across the collection.

Colour has also become fundamental to the product proposition. Urban Olive with Soft Sage, French Navy with Glacier Mist and Earth Rose with Vanilla Blush create three considered colour stories inspired by interiors and contemporary home trends. Rather than applying colour as decoration, complementary exterior and interior tones create a coordinated product experience designed to work visibly within the home. This is cookware intentionally designed not to disappear into the cupboard and for consumers to feel proud to have on display. And behind the new aesthetic sits the performance consumers expect from Prestige. It is the idea that now defines the brand: Style and substance.

BRAND PROFILE: PRESTIGE
MADE FOR MODERN LIVING The new Prestige is not built around a single hero pan. It has been developed as a complete kitchen ecosystem, giving consumers the opportunity to carry one coordinated aesthetic across cookware, bakeware, tools and gadgets, giving retailers opportunities to build stories across multiple categories and price points. The Ceramic Edition collection combines Prestige’s signature curved body with PFASfree ceramic nonstick coating designed to outperform leading ceramic nonstick cookware*, tonal interiors, glass lids with soft close silicone rims and the signature Prestige ergonomic handles. Alongside it sits a new Stainless Steel Edition collection, bringing professional-inspired performance together with coloured exterior finishes, uncoated sunray interiors, glass lids and brass-effect detailing. Coordinated ceramic-coated bakeware and colour-matched silicone tools complete the wider kitchen proposition. For retailers, the three colourways also create flexibility. Urban Olive and French Navy form the core palette, while Earth Rose provides a more expressive hero option. The specification remains consistent across colourways, allowing assortments to be built around different customers, interiors and merchandising environments.
MORE THAN A PRODUCT LAUNCH The commercial ambition behind the relaunch is equally important. Prestige believes the new proposition can help recruit younger, design-conscious consumers into the brand, encourage shoppers to trade up through the combination of aesthetics and performance, and bring greater lifestyle relevance to the cookware category. But the transformation also needed an emotional idea capable of connecting all of those elements. During consumer testing, one thought repeatedly stood out: ‘I made that’. Simple, human and proudly imperfect, it captures the feeling that comes after making something yourself. Whether that is a Tuesday-night dinner, cooking for someone you love or putting a dish in the middle of a table full of friends.
Inset: The range is designed for those ‘I made that’ moments. Below: The Ceramic Edition combines the signature curved body with ceramic nonstick tonal interiors.
It moves Prestige away from presenting cooking as an everyday task and towards pride, creativity and self-expression. That thought now sits at the heart of the new brand and its launch campaign. Inset: The new proposition is targeted at younger, designconscious consumers.
Prestige is supporting the relaunch with a multi-channel programme spanning PR, influencer partnerships, product seeding, digital content, social activation, OOH and experiential activity, alongside POS and merchandising support for retail partners. The October launch marks the beginning of the new brand story, with wider retail rollout following as Prestige builds the new brand into 2027. For a name with generations of recognition behind it, the ambition is not to leave that heritage behind. It is to make it relevant again. A new look. A new collection. A new point of view. Prestige, Reimagined. For those ‘I made that’ moments. *Better than leading competitor ceramic nonstick in foodrelease and metal-utensil performance tests conducted at 200°C, and in separate staining and easy-cleaning tests.

Bira responds to budget consultation By Andrew Goodacre, ceo of BIRA
Andrew talks about what independent retailers need from the autumn budget and why now is the time to make your voice heard.
H
igh streets are back in the national spotlight. The Prime Minister has been touring towns and cities to hear about the challenges facing local communities and that renewed focus is welcome. But attention is not the same as action. The autumn budget, to be delivered by chancellor John Healey, is the opportunity for that interest in our high streets to turn into something that makes a real difference to independent businesses. Bira has now submitted its response to the treasury's annual budget consultation on behalf of the sector, ahead of the budget, which is set to take place on 28 October. Business rates sit at the top of our list. We are calling for a return to the 75% business rates discount that retailers previously enjoyed, worth up to £110,000 and we want a commitment that no independent retailer faces a higher rates bill next year. Beyond that, the system itself needs meaningful long-term reform. Retailers deserve a tax they can plan around with confidence. Employment costs are the second major concern. We have proposed that the employers' National Insurance allowance rises to £15,000, to help offset the impact of the previous increases in contributions. For a small shop with a handful of staff, that difference matters, particularly heading into the busiest trading weeks of the year. Then there is the question of fairness between the high street and overseas online sellers. We are asking the government to bring forward plans to close the low-value imports loophole. Changes are currently scheduled for 2028 and we would like to see them in place by 2027. We are also urging ministers to tackle VAT fraud by overseas online sellers by April 2027. Independent retailers play by the rules and they should not be undercut by sellers who do not. Two further priorities are closer to the daily experience of running a shop. Retail crime remains a serious concern
Above: Chancellor John Healey will deliver the autumn budget on 28 October.
and we are calling for continued investment in community and neighbourhood policing to tackle theft and anti-social behaviour in town centres. We have also proposed a national approach to reducing the cost of town centre parking, because affordable parking can play an important role in encouraging shoppers back to their local high streets. If we want people to choose the high street over the click of a button, getting there needs to be as easy as possible. None of us will know what the budget contains until the chancellor stands up and I won't pretend to predict it. What I can say is that the priorities for independent retailers are clear and Bira will keep making that case as strongly as we can. Our submission is in, but the work does not stop there. We will be sharing our key recommendations with members and I would encourage you to speak to your local MP as well. Explain in your own words what these measures would mean for your shop. A message from a business owner in their own constituency carries real weight and the more voices they hear from the high street, the harder it is to ignore. Above left: Bira is requesting that no independent retailer faces a higher rates bill next year. Left: Andrew Goodacre, ceo, Bira.

BHETA works with Home Office on knife retail guidance BHETA is working with the Home Office and is to consult members as government finalises ‘Ronan's Law’ and ‘Bulk Purchase’ guidance ahead of 2027 implementation. This follows a Home Office briefing, chaired by BHETA general manager, Stephen Richardson, covering the two central pillars of the new law: stronger age verification and new Above: The Home Office will share bulk sales reporting requirements. outline guidance this month. Stephen thanked the Home Office for engaging with the sector and reaffirmed the industry's support for the legislation's goals. "Nobody in our sector wants to see knives sold irresponsibly or to under-18s," he said. "And we're grateful to the Home Office for giving BHETA members the opportunity to review and feedback and to attempt to ensure proportionality within the confines of the primary legislation." The Home Office confirmed it will share outline guidance with members this month (October), across two rounds of feedback, before formal publication and implementation in 2027. This builds on a track record of BHETA campaigning on behalf of knife suppliers, including its on-going work to secure proportionate knife legislation and to exempt cutlery knives from age-verification requirements. "This is exactly what trade association membership should deliver," said Stephen. "Our members get early sight of guidance, a structured route to feed back on it, and a Home Office that is listening." The Home Office will share outline guidance in October before implementation in 2027.
Meaco joins BHETA Meaco has joined BHETA, bringing more than 30 years of air treatment expertise to the association's SEA community. The company is best known for its award-winning dehumidifiers and has built a reputation for quality, energy efficiency and customer care, both in the UK and around the world. Meaco's British-designed Above: Meaco is known for its dehumidifiers. range also includes air purifiers, fans and air conditioning. The company has now sold over one million dehumidifiers and exports to more than 20 countries. Meaco has also helped lead the industry towards lower energy consumption, a focus that has earned recognition from Which?, Good Housekeeping and Quiet Mark. Claire Smith, BHETA's sector manager for Housewares & SEA, said: "I'm really pleased to have Meaco on board. A lot of people will know them for their dehumidifiers, but what stands out to me is how much they've pushed the whole category to be more energy efficient. That matters to shoppers right now and it's great to have a British brand like that in our SEA community."
T&G Woodware joins BHETA BHETA lobbies on inheritance tax BHETA is asking chancellor John Healey to reverse controversial changes to Business Property Relief (BPR), warning that the measures risk damaging investment and employment. Family businesses account for around 93% of UK private-sector firms and employ 15.8 million people. FBUK estimates that they generate £985 billion in Gross Value Added and contribute £422 billion in taxes each year. BHETA general manager, Stephen Richardson has signed an open letter to the chancellor coordinated by Family Business UK (FBUK) ahead of the autumn budget. He explained: “Family-owned companies are an important part of the industries BHETA represents. Following discussions with members affected, BHETA is concerned that the inheritance tax reforms risk diverting investment from jobs, product development and growth.” The FBUK campaign brings together business organisations representing over 200,000 companies and calls for the restoration of 100% BPR for qualifying family businesses. The reforms, which came into effect in April 2026, limit full BPR to the first £2.5m of qualifying assets. Above the threshold, qualifying assets receive 50% relief, creating an effective inheritance tax rate of 20%. Stephen continued: “For family-owned suppliers, this issue has a direct impact on commercial investment because much of the value of a company may be held within the operating business, rather than as readily available cash. These businesses often reinvest over generations in brands, product development, stock, people and their communities. If succession suddenly requires significant sums to be extracted from the business, that capital must still come from somewhere, which could therefore mean less for new products, recruitment, exporting or investment. Or equally, additional borrowing and, in some cases, pressure to sell part or all of the company.”

ONE YEAR ON... AND STILL HERE WHEN YOU NEED US A
year ago, almost to the day, I walked into the Excellence in Housewares Awards for my very first official engagement as ceo of the Rainy Day Trust. I remember the nerves. I also remember the warmth. People I had never met came over to tell me what the Rainy Day Trust had meant to them, a colleague or a family member. Earlier this month I went back to the Royal Lancaster, once again as your nominated charity and that same warmth was still there. It reminded me just why we do what we do. The Rainy Day Trust has supported people in our industry since 1843. That is a remarkable legacy and one I feel lucky to carry forward from my predecessor, Bryan Clover. But the world our people work in has changed and so have the pressures on them. Rising costs, money worries, stress, isolation... too often, by the time someone reaches out to us, they are already in crisis. We will always be there in those moments. That will never change. What we want to change is how early we can reach people. AT EVERY STEP The heart of our new five-year strategy is, ‘Here when you need us... At every step’. It is built on a simple idea: Prevention first. Alongside the grants and crisis support we have always offered, we are investing in the things that help people stay well before life gets on top of them. Much of that is already happening.
Below: The charity’s rebrand and new website are designed to make it easier to find and easier to talk to.
A year on from her first official engagement at the Excellence in Housewares Awards 2025, Rainy Day Trust ceo, Anna Skeats, reflects on a year of change, a fresh new look and why reaching people sooner matters more than ever. Our ambassador programme trains colleagues inside businesses to notice when someone is struggling and point them towards help, with ambassadors now in workplaces across the UK. Our Habits for Health app, developed by Wellbeing People
and OMNIA DIGITAL, gives people simple, practical tools for their physical and mental wellbeing. And Thousand Smiles September, which has just wrapped up, showed what happens when a whole sector decides to be a little kinder. A NEW LOOK FOR A NEW CHAPTER You may have noticed we look a little different. Our rebrand and new website are designed to make us easier to find and easier to talk to. same two things: ‘I didn't know you existed’ and ‘I didn't think it was for someone like me’. That is the barrier we most want to break down. If you work in this industry, on the shop floor, in the warehouse or at head office, the Rainy Day Trust is for you. BETTER TOGETHER None of this works without the businesses behind it. Our new corporate membership programme gives companies a way to look after their people and strengthen the wider sector at the same time, with tiers to suit all organisations. It has been a joy to welcome new members this year and to keep working alongside valued partners. This community welcomed me with open arms a year ago and has kept me going ever since. A massive thank you to everyone who has become a member, bought a raffle ticket, been part of our campaigns, shared our story, or simply checked in on a colleague. My ask from here is a gentle one. Talk to your teams about us. Make sure your people know we are here for them too before things get hard, not just after. And if you would like to explore how your business could get involved, my door is always open, I’d love to hear from you.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
SPONSORED BY
CRITERIA: This very special award is presented to an individual who has contributed greatly to the UK housewares industry. Nominations are invited from across the industry.
WINNER Rob Sutton Right: The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to RKW’s Rob Sutton by Emma Lewis-Jones, Lifetime Brands. Below: Rob Sutton, founder and ceo, RKW, the winner of the Excellence in Housewares Awards 2026 Outstanding Achievement Award.
Initial Reaction: “Looking back on the Excellence in Housewares Awards evening, it still feels quite surreal to have received such a special honour. When my wife and I started RKW nearly 40 years ago, I could never have imagined how far the business would come. “It's been an incredible journey and one that wouldn't have been possible without the remarkable people we've had around us. I'm incredibly fortunate to have such a passionate and dedicated team, whose hard work, honesty and integrity have always been at the heart of our business. “I've been privileged to be part of this fantastic industry for almost four decades, and I'm grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way. A huge thank you to Progressive Housewares, everyone who nominated me and all those who have been part of RKW's journey. It's an honour that means a great deal to me and an evening I'll never forget.”
The award presentation followed this speech by Progressive Housewares publishing director, Rob Willis “Our Outstanding Achievement Award recognises someone who has made an exceptional contribution to the housewares industry. Tonight’s recipient has done that through a combination of instinct, determination and hard work. “Their entrepreneurial streak appeared early. From a modest upbringing, they developed an eye for an opportunity and an observation that would serve them throughout their career; people buy from people. “When the opportunity arose to get out and sell, theirs was the first hand up. Soon, they were building relationships and at 19, they generated their first £1 million of sales in a year. “Around 1990, with a very small amount of cash, they set out to build a business, alongside their partner. One would buy and sell, the other would deliver and both would spend nights loading orders. Communication was handled through calls from phone boxes, with parents passing messages between them. “As the business grew, so did the ambition. Our recipient travelled to China, invested in warehouse space and recognised the potential of online selling. They also understood the value of owning and developing brands, making the transition from distributing other people’s products to taking responsibility for their own. “That willingness to commit was tested again during the pandemic. Faced with uncertainty, they increased orders and backed the business to meet future demand. When supply chains became congested and households began spending more on their homes, the stock was there “But those who know our winner best will tell you that the scale of the business is only part of the story. They describe someone who works exceptionally hard, whose mind rarely switches off and who still finds time to help someone else get an idea off the ground. “He has also remained close to his roots, supporting his local community and charities. Much of that generosity happens quietly. That’s not to say he is too reserved, though, as he absolutely has his wild side. “I’ve had the pleasure of his company in various places around the world and at no time has that been dull. There is a remarkable story here, a business built from modest beginnings, opportunities created for hundreds of people and a truly lasting contribution to the industry. From zero to this day, he still knows the first name of every customer and wants to have a say in absolutely everything – much to the enjoyment of his team… who, I should add, have championed this accolade heading in his direction for many years now.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As the festive shopping season nears again, retailers on the front line tell Progressive Housewares what they believe consumers will be shopping for, the trends for the season and how they are hoping to boost footfall.
UNWRAPPING OPPORTUNITY The questions • What are consumers looking for this Christmas and what are the key trends in housewares for the season? • What are your expectations for the festive season on the high street? • Are you planning any activity in-store to help drive footfall during the festive season? REBECCA GILLIGAN, BUYER, ELPHICKS “I think customers are being more considered with their spending, but they still want to buy something that feels special. We’re seeing a real demand for gifts that are useful but also have personality. “For housewares, entertaining will be a big focus. Customers are looking at how they can make their homes feel special when family and friends come over, so we’re seeing lots of interest in tableware, glassware, serving pieces and linens. “Colour and pattern are also important. There’s a move away from neutral, with customers becoming more confident about adding personality. We will have bold patterns and colours on linens. “I’m feeling positive about Christmas. Customers are still

watching what they spend, but Christmas is one time when people do want to treat others. “Farnham has a great independent retail offer and I think that’s a big part of what brings people into town. Customers want to browse, discover something different and see products. For Elphicks, it’s about having a good mix of products and prices and making sure there is always something new. “Christmas is an exciting time at Elphicks and we’ll be putting a lot of focus into making the store feel festive and inspiring. We’ll have strong Christmas merchandising, lots of gifting ideas and inspiration for entertaining at home. We’ll also be doing events and activity with some of our brands, along with loyalty days. “We want customers to come in, have a look around, find something they weren’t expecting and enjoy the experience. Hopefully, that’s what keeps people coming back to Elphicks year after year.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
GILL GRADWELL, SHOP OWNER/DIRECTOR/OVERALL COOKSHOP MAESTRO, COOKING KNEADS “Our customers are looking for gifts that are useful, good quality but also that little bit special - something that will be used and enjoyed, rather than adding to the clutter. “Kitchen gifts remain incredibly popular, from smaller stocking fillers and gadgets, through to cookware, bakeware and knives. We’re seeing continued interest in products with a strong sense of personality, whether that’s colourful designs, quirky pieces or products from British and independent makers. “We’re always hopeful for a busy Christmas, but we know that customers are still conscious of how much they’re spending. “For independent shops, Christmas is a particularly important time and we’re lucky to be part of a strong community of independent businesses. There’s a lovely atmosphere in Shrewsbury at Christmas and we hope people will continue to support local shops and enjoy coming into town (and Cooking Kneads) to do their shopping. “Christmas is a busy time at Cooking Kneads, so our focus is making the shop as welcoming and inspiring as possible and giving customers plenty of reasons to come and browse. “We always love to dress our window for Christmas, which helps tempt people into the shop. There will also be lots of new and seasonal products, creating gift ideas at different price points. Gift inspiration and new arrivals will be shared across social media. “Shrewsbury has a late night shopping evening during the festive season so we support that, providing mince pies and mulled wine. We also have a tub of chocolates on hand during December to give our shoppers a sugar boost.”
NICK VAUGHAN-ROBERTS, DIRECTOR, PEPPERCORN “We find people are looking for something a little different - something a little special that also has a bit of style. Netherton Foundry cookware is a great example, as well as olive wood and cork - more natural products that contain no plastics. Food gifts are also an increasing category for us. “We find offering something different from the larger retailers/supermarkets, higher end products, something that lasts and can only be found in small independents, works well. The fact our town has no large retailers and is a boutique shopping town, means it’s expected from us. “Customers value expert advice and honest information. With so much fraud and copycats on the
internet, people are unsure what they are buying, what the quality will be like and then there’s the after sales and actually talking to a person. “There’s a huge movement away from plastics. Stainless steel frying pans sell over nonstick (PFAS) and that will surely continue. Colour is still a big thing, both pastels and brights. “We believe the in-store experience will be particularly important this year. Customers are looking for inspiration and recommendations and that is where smaller specialist shops win, the honest enthusiasm and passion and carefully selected products. “We are hoping to see
customers supporting local businesses and choosing to buy Christmas gifts from independent retailers. We see Christmas as an opportunity to make the shop feel particularly welcoming and inspiring. Full of Christmas decorations to buy, gifts, box sets, tasteful and regularly updated displays and, of course, the Christmas windows. “Where possible, we like to create a sense of occasion around the store and town during the Christmas period, through demonstrations, tasters, book signings and communicating with other businesses within the town forum to organise events and collaborations. “As an independent retailer, our relationship with customers is hugely important. We want people to enjoy coming into the shop, leave amazed and inspired, but not feel pressurised to buy. Return trade is just as important.”
TINA BARKWAY, TRADING DIRECTOR, ALDISS "Consumers continue to look for products that offer style and value. While there is still caution around spending, customers are prepared to invest in quality items and statement pieces that enhance the home, particularly when entertaining over Christmas. “Cosy home trends are set to take centre stage, with shoppers leaning into warm, inviting spaces. Rich earth colours - deep terracottas, plums, warm ochres and forest greens - are becoming the go-to shades for seasonal decorating and gifting. In housewares, we're seeing interest in multifunctional kitchen gadgets, products that make everyday tasks easier, practical storage solutions, tapas-style entertaining and practical, giftable items. "We expect customers to get a head start on Christmas shopping to spread the cost, with a shift toward practical, useful gifts that offer everyday value. “Buyers will be a bit more deliberate with spending, hunting down solid quality and great service. This gives independent retailers a fantastic chance to shine by offering expert advice, handpicked products and that personal touch. Provided retailers get their product mix right and maintain strong stock availability, we anticipate a positive festive season. "Creating an enjoyable shopping experience is a key focus for us during the festive period. We will be showcasing seasonal displays, inspirational gifting and entertaining ideas to help customers discover products and make shopping easier. “We will also be highlighting gift ideas across key categories, including kitchenware. Our aim is to create a welcoming environment that encourages customers to browse and enjoy the experience, while ensuring our team is on hand to provide the service and knowledge that customers value."

RISE AND SHINE
Inset: Products from Full Circle, available from Eddingtons, adopt the functional minimalism principle, offering products that seamlessly combine maximum utility with high-end aesthetic appeal. Below: Bluestem Group is seeing a strong demand for smart and automated solutions.
The popularity of the cleaning, storage and utility sector continues unabated as consumers focus on creating clean and tidy homes and follow multiple influencers in the weekly reset. Suppliers explore the latest trends and products and evaluate how the sector is faring.
A
ddressing an everyday need, as well as a drive to create insta-worthy homes, the cleaning, storage and utility sector is robust in the housewares industry. Louise Garvey, product category manager, Minky, outlines: “It continues to be a resilient and exciting sector. Cleaning, storage and utility are everyday necessities, but there is also significant scope for innovation, which helps keep the category fresh and gives consumers new reasons to purchase. “Consumers are undoubtedly more considered in their spending, so products need to demonstrate genuine value. However, this can also create opportunities for brands that deliver quality, durability and tangible benefits.”
Inset: The Black+Decker pedal-operated spin system from Benross allows quick, hands-free wringing, helping remove excess water with minimal effort.
While sturdy, the category is competitive. Adam Freeman, senior brand manager, Benross Group, continues: “The sector remains strong, particularly as these are essential categories that form part of consumers’ everyday routines. However, it is also becoming an increasingly crowded marketplace, with a growing number of similar, run-of-the-mill products competing heavily on price. “We believe there is still strong demand for durable, well-designed products that offer a genuine point of difference. Consumers want to see a clear reason to choose one product Lisa Couser, senior product developer, over another, whether that is better Beldray, continues: “Consumers are more functionality, multifunctional design, considered in how they spend due to the improved performance, easier economic climate, but they storage or simply a more are willing to invest in robust construction.” products that solve a Melanie Kemper, marketing common household specialist, Keeeper, agrees: problem. MARKET FOCUS: CLEANING, STORAGE & UTILITY “An emerging trend consumers are increasingly demanding are compact, multifunctional products which fit into either their home seamlessly or their routines. Ultimately shoppers want a product that is going to make their cleaning routine simpler, quicker and reduce clutter.” Sylwia Jacob, head of marketing, Scrub Daddy UK & Europe, agrees: “Consumers increasingly want cleaning products that make everyday tasks quicker, easier and ideally, a little more enjoyable. Performance remains essential, but shoppers also value versatility, durability and products that offer a clear point of difference. “They want to understand immediately what a product does, why it works and how it will fit into their routine. Distinctive design and personality are increasingly important too. Cleaning products no longer have to be purely functional or hidden away – consumers are embracing products that look good, feel intuitive to use and bring some fun to an everyday chore.” Melanie agrees: “Consumers increasingly expect everyday household products to combine functionality with good design. Storage and utility products are no longer simply hidden away – they are becoming part of the home and therefore need to fit modern interiors, as well as everyday routines.” Monika Wasowska, product manager, home and outdoor, RKW, adds: “Aesthetics are becoming a genuine sales driver. On-trend finishes such as Tower’s Anthracite and Teal colourway are helping cleaning products move away from looking purely utilitarian and towards something consumers are happier to have on display. That gives the category more relevance and gives retailers more scope to create stronger, more aspirational merchandising stories.” Sustainability is a driving factor. Matt Guest, co-founder, Composty, outlines: “Consumers are increasingly looking for more sustainable solutions, but they’re
also attracted to products that are new, innovative and offer something different from what is already available. “Of course, the product still needs to work well and offer good value for money. Sustainability on its own isn’t enough if the product doesn’t perform, but there is an appetite for alternatives that can improve routines while reducing reliance on traditional plastic products.” Faye Smeeth, product development manager, Eddingtons, adds: “We see a definitive move away from shiny plastic solutions to sustainable earthy materials like bamboo, cellulose, agave, even walnut shell and coconut fibre.” Within this, more natural cleaning is also growing. Nicole Durham, marketing manager, Bluestem Group, comments: “Another growing trend is the shift towards chemical free cleaning. Users are becoming increasingly conscious of the most effective way to clean while doing their part to help the environment. This more natural way of cleaning is a safer alternative for households with children and pets too.” In storage, consumers are prioritising other factors. Rachel Browne, senior sales manager UK and Ireland, OXO, outlines: “Consumers are looking for products that make everyday upkeep feel more manageable and bring a genuine benefit to the
Inset: Minky is seeing demand for products that save time and space, like this Waterproof Laundry Basket. Below: Imagery showing how containers fit into a cupboard or fridge, like this one of the OXO Pop Containers, helps consumers with buying decisions.
home. Within storage that means solutions that help people see what they have, make better use of cupboard and fridge space and keep everyday essentials easy to find.” Information is important. Craig Sammells, country manager UK and Ireland, Orthex Group, adds: “Consumers need to be given the right information on what a storage product is best suited to, so waterproof boxes for garage and loft, transparent lidded for fridge storage, airtight for dry ingredients, etc. This will avoid disappointment – and retailer returns.” In utility, high-end products are popular. Monika outlines: “There is a growing expectation that practical products should feel more premium. Swan’s Stealth collapsible airers are a good example, combining generous drying capacity with a matt black finish that feels far more considered than traditional utility products.”

MARKET FOCUS: CLEANING, STORAGE & UTILITY In floorcare, multifunctional designs are key. Matt Eckersley, sales and marketing director, Beam Group, offers: “Multifunction appliances that vacuum and mop at the same time are gaining ground because they save both time and cupboard space, a real selling point in smaller UK homes. Advancements in robotic cleaners are shifting the category from novelty to genuine time saving solutions without any compromise to the cleaning performance.” Meanwhile in general cleaning, specific products are gaining traction. Laurence Smith, director, Vitality House, tells PH: “At Greener Cleaner we have seen a rise in products which clean a specific item or where there is a specific task required. Our Grout Brush, Bottle Brush and 3 Specialist Cleaning Brushes have been doing particularly well addressing consumer needs.” Driving many of the trends is social media. Matt continues: “Social media and TikTok in particular, has become a key discovery and demonstration channel for a full range of cleaning products. However shoppers are increasingly sceptical of paid endorsements, so look to confirm their choice through accreditations and verified reviews before buying. We also find that consumers are reassured by seeing the products in trusted retailers, thereby significantly increasing adoption.” Louise agrees: “Products in this sector are particularly well-suited to social media, because they can be incredibly demonstrable. Before and after content, cleaning transformations, organisation ideas, product hacks and simple demonstrations can communicate a benefit within seconds.” Nicole adds: “Influencers play a key role in driving awareness and sales, as brands partner through paid collaborations to showcase products to their audiences.” Faye continues: “Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have transformed mundane household tasks into highly aesthetic lifestyle content, making the once mundane a desirable product or activity.” When it works, influencer recommendation is strong. Matt tells PH: “We recently had a large influencer use our products. She didn’t even mention Composty by name, but it resulted in our best sales day ever on our website at that time. We’ve actually beaten it since, but it showed us just how powerful that kind of exposure can be.”
Inset: Keeeper’s new morten & marlon laundry range focuses on creating products that work together while offering a contemporary design and coordinated colour palette. Below: Beldray’s MultiClean Sets are large multi-functional cleaning sets that are versatile for all routines.
There are lessons to be learned from influencers. Rachel says: “There’s an opportunity for retailers to apply that same thinking beyond social media. Product pages, in-store displays and online imagery can all help demonstrate how a product works and make its value much easier to understand.” Creating a strong impact in-store is also important. Craig explains: “If space in-store allows, having an impactful display highlighting USPs of brand and product – like nesting, stackability, recycled content, etc – as well as some ideas for how the products can be used to their best advantage, works really well.” Laurence continues: “Smart retailers offer a full wide range online and are listing ontrend products such as eco-cleaning products like Greener Cleaner where they can also improve category value and margins while offering a USP.” Coordinating ranges help merchandising: “Coordinated products can create a much stronger proposition than individual items in isolation, particularly where colours, materials, functionality and branding work together,” explains Adam. “Equally merchandising alongside complementary product categories can help create a broader lifestyle story and allow consumers to visualise how those products fit into their own homes and everyday routines.” Inset: Tower’s Whiziwand XL offers interchangeable heads and a telescopic handle with several clear use cases that can be demonstrated quickly and visually by retailers.

Unique lines create excitement at retail, too. “Products with an immediate sense of discovery and collectability can create additional excitement and encourage repeat purchases,” concludes Sylwia. “One recent example is our blind-box Scrub Mommy Disney Pixar Toy Story collection, which combined cleaning performance with collectability and delivered a strong rate of sale.”

MARKET FOCUS: KNIVES
A knife is often seen as the most important tool in the kitchen and a good knife will make preparation easier, quicker and more enjoyable. PH finds out more about what consumers are looking for in the sector, what retailers need to take into consideration and the latest products on the market. Inset: The Classic Colour range from WÜSTHOF continues to expand with new colours like Fresh Rosemary, launched last year.
A CUT ABOVE T
he knives category is a very personal one when it comes to consumer purchasing factors. Knives need to feel comfortable and perform the right tasks for the individual, to work in a kitchen. Lueder Stercken, head of sales for blades, Victorinox, begins: “Consumers should begin with how they cook and the tasks they perform most often. Many people rely on one knife for almost everything, making versatility, sharpness, comfort and control especially important.
Inset: Fissler worked with 2-star chef, Alexander Herrmann to create the PrimeCut Collection, offering finely ground blades, polished by hand, with tightly fitted wooden handles.
“A good everyday knife should handle common preparation tasks confidently, while more specialised knives can make jobs such as slicing bread, preparing vegetables or peeling smaller ingredients easier and more precise. Quality materials, edge retention, ease of maintenance and a trusted warranty provide the long-term reliability consumers should expect from a well-chosen kitchen tool.” That reliability factor has taken centre stage with a more budget conscious consumer. Oli Notley, sales manager, UK and Ireland, WÜSTHOF, outlines: “Consumers are increasingly value-conscious, but value isn’t necessarily about choosing the lowest price. We’re seeing greater consideration around what makes a product worth investing in – from quality and performance to durability and longevity. When it comes to knives, consumers want to understand what they are paying for and the difference a well-made knife can make in the kitchen. “This lends itself to the buy once, buy better mindset. A good knife is something that can be used every day and when properly cared for and sharpened, can last many years.” Feeding into this is a desire for accessories. Heidi Thomas, head of marketing at DK Household Brands, explains: “Consumers are increasingly interested in knife care and storage, PROGRESSIVE

making accessories an important part of the purchase journey. Zyliss knife blocks and sharpeners help keep blades organised, protected and razor sharp, ensuring knives continue to perform at their best for years.” Debbie Wann, marketing executive, Aydya, agrees: “There is an increasing focus on products that offer longevity and help consumers get more form the products they already own. A good sharpener can extend the useful life of a quality knife, making it a practical addition to any kitchen.”

MARKET FOCUS: KNIVES Samuel Stenhem, ceo, Tormek, adds: “Sharpening is an often-overlooked part of the purchase decision. Even the best quality knife will lose its edge through regular use, so consumers should consider how they intend to maintain it before making an investment. A sharp knife not only performs better and makes food preparation easier but can also provide greater control and safety in the kitchen.” The brand is also important. Katie Cryer, head of sales UK (trade), Robert Welch expands: “Consumers want to buy from a brand they know and trust. They want a quality, long-lasting knife that’s been expertly designed from the best materials and to be reassured by a weighty guarantee. It needs to feel well-balanced and comfortable in the hand, be exceptionally sharp and easy to keep sharp. They want the right knife for the right task and a range they can build on as their culinary skills grow and their repertoire and kitchen expands.” Design is increasingly taken into consideration. Suzanne Muller, marketing, sales and service USA/export, Richardson Sheffield, comments: “Design remains a key purchase driver. Today’s consumers want tools that not only perform exceptionally well, but also complement their kitchen aesthetics. Richardson Sheffield therefore continues to focus on combining cutting performance, ergonomic design and contemporary styling to meet evolving consumer expectations.” Oli adds: “Classic Colour is a great example of how innovation can also come through design. We took our bestselling Classic series and introduced colour to a category traditionally dominated by blackhandled knives, giving consumers the opportunity to choose a knife that not only performs, but also reflects their personal style and kitchen.” Within that, materials are also key. David Kidd, creative director, Taylor’s Eye Witness, says: “Materials are becoming an increasingly important part of the decision. We are seeing growing interest in knives with stainless steel construction and traditional wooden handles, as consumers look for products with fewer

plastics and a more natural, durable feel. Wooden handles can also give a knife a distinctive character, with the natural grain and patina developing over time. “At the same time, there is still a role for highperformance handle materials where they provide a genuine functional benefit. Consumers are becoming more discerning about plastics and polymers, so it is important that

manufacturers can clearly demonstrate why a particular material has been chosen and what benefit it delivers.” Choosing the right knife can be an individual preference. Jayesh Patel, founder and ceo, Japanese Knife Company, expands: “Depending on the size of the user’s hand, a thicker handle may be more comfortable than a slimmer one for a bigger hand and vice versa. The point at which the user grips the knife dictates how balanced the knife feels. For example, if your normal hold is on the handle, a lighter blade with a heavier tang/handle will feel more balanced, while a heavier blade and lighter tang/handle will be more balanced when gripped on the body of the knife.” Being a restricted category, merchandising knives can be challenging for retailers. Marc Kinsey, sales manager, HAUS, comments: “Kitchen knives are, of course, an age-restricted category – as such, it is imperative that retailers follow all government guidelines

MARKET FOCUS: KNIVES for the sales of these items. We support our partners with display cabinets to prevent access without a member of the shopfloor team being present and have also implemented changes in packaging to limit access to contents before the consumer returns home. “While this can sometimes be seen as frustrating or counterproductive to sales, we actually find that being fully compliant encourages consumers to actively prefer instore advice when making their selection and it cements this category as a primarily instore choice, driving consumer footfall to stores as a result.” Lueder furthers: “Responsible retailing and strong category presentation must work together. Retailers need robust age verification, trained employees, secure displays and clear procedures. At the same time, restrictions should not prevent customers from receiving useful guidance. Product cards, digital content and knowledgeable staff can explain each knife’s legitimate culinary purpose without requiring unrestricted product access.” There are also ways to work with the restrictions. Katie explains: “Because our knives are so well balanced in the hand and the handles so tactile, we’d like retailers to offer customers the chance to hold them.
Inset: Following the success of its GRIPZ scissors, Taylor’s Eye Witness has extended the concept into a new range of knives, featuring silicone handles for a comfortable and long-lasting grip.
As that isn’t always an option, we also offer ‘holdme’ knives as a solution. “A moulded acrylic cover surrounding a blunted blade allows the customer to understand how the handle feels, experience the weight of the knife and the way the blade would chop and which of our ranges – Signature or Professional – suits their hands best.” A broad range is also helpful. “Retailers should offer a well-balanced assortment that caters to different consumer needs, from entry-level everyday kitchens to premium enthusiasts,” says Suzanne. “Important factors in driving purchase decisions are clear communication of the USPs. This can be done via merchandising or packaging.” Incremental sales are also possible. “Retailers should merchandise knives and accessories together, encouraging shoppers to build a complete preparation solution rather than making a single-product purchase. We work closely with retail partners by providing compelling product stories, educational content and merchandising support that highlights the performance, safety and longevity benefits of Zyliss knives and accessories.” Samuel agrees: “Through staff training, in-store demos and engaging displays, shoppers can see for themselves how easy and important it is to keep knives razor-sharp. The premium quality of the Tormek T-1 creates strong opportunities for upselling, brand differentiation and customer loyalty. When customers know they can properly maintain their knives with a Tormek T-1, they’re confident in investing in better-quality knives.” David concludes: “Presentation and education are particularly important in this category. Knives can be a considered purchase and consumers often benefit from being able to understand the differences in blade materials, construction, handle design and intended use.”
