ummer 2026 kicked off, as it always does in the housewares sector, with Exclusively from BHETA. Stands sold out even earlier than before, creating a busy two days, buzzing with energy and the excitement of new product launches, campaigns, celebrity partnerships and more. The show was a huge success, bringing together more than 130 exhibitors representing over 250 brands, with buyers in attendance from some of the UK’s most recognisable retail brands, including Harrods, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Ocado, Currys, Boots, B&Q, Costco, Wayfair, Robert Dyas, Next, Amazon, Lakeland, TK Maxx, Argos and John Lewis, alongside more representatives from independent retailers, department stores, garden centres, online marketplaces and HORECA sector. Some well-known personalities were spotted in the aisles promoting products and ranges,

including chefs Tommy Banks, Matt Tebbutt, Jeremy Pang and John Torode, as well as Lynsey Queen of Clean. The 2027 dates are already locked in, with Exclusively Show set to return to Business Design Centre, London, on 8–9 June 2027. In this issue, we chatted to some key independents about the summer so far, how sales and footfall have been affected by the heatwave and what’s hot in housewares. We also took a closer look at the sectors of tools and gadgets, glassware and barware and bakeware, finding out how the categories are faring, what’s new, what consumers are looking for and more. With so much innovation in the sector, it’s no surprise that the judges for the upcoming Excellence in Housewares Awards had their work cut out when deciding on the finalists in the retail and product categories. But they battled through and came up with a thoroughly deserving list, which is outlined later in this issue.

HAUS showcases Emile Henry brand at Harrods HAUS is celebrating the success of a recent Harrods showcase featuring one of its premium cookware brands, the French ceramic cookware specialist, Emile Henry. The event invited shoppers to discover the brand's craftsmanship, cooking performance and beautifully designed ceramic cookware through an engaging day of live demonstrations and interactive product experiences. The highlight was internationally acclaimed pâtissier, Eric Lanlard, who hosted a series of live demonstrations in the Harrods Demonstration Kitchen. Eric created a selection of recipes using Emile Henry cookware, showcasing the versatility and performance of the collection. Eric’s expertise and engaging demonstrations drew enthusiastic crowds,

with visitors enjoying tastings, asking questions and gaining professional baking tips while experiencing the cookware in action. The event also celebrated the longstanding relationship between HAUS and Eric Lanlard. Having collaborated across numerous demonstrations and events over the years, Eric's passion complements the values of the Emile Henry brand, making him the ideal partner to bring the collection to life. Marc Kinsey, sales manager at HAUS, commented: "As always, we were delighted to spend time with Harrods customers, demonstrating Emile Henry's Madeleine collection and sharing Eric's professional tips and knowledge. It was great to be part of such a busy event and to enjoy the enthusiasm of everybody who visited."

Known for its luxury and designer homeware, Liberty provides a new retail home for Le Creuset’s colour-led range. The range features a selection of Le Creuset’s shades, including Nuit, Shell Pink, Volcanic, Nectar, Garnett and Bleu Riviera, Le Creuset’s newest colour introduced earlier this year. In the first instance, the group is running the advert in a single region through a measured trial to test the creative, track its impact on sales and brand awareness and assess the return on investment before deciding whether to expand more widely. The marketing activity is being delivered through ITV Backing Business, an initiative that matches UP’s advertising spend to double the media value behind the Beldray investment. The advert features Beldray’s All-in-One Floor Cleaner. Rather than relying on the traditional product demonstration style, the campaign – built around the creative platform ‘Be More Beldray’ – takes a warmer, more distinctive approach, using humour and relatable household situations to reinforce Beldray’s positioning as an everyday cleaning companion. Tracy Carroll, chief marketing officer of Ultimate Products, said: “Television gives us the opportunity to introduce the new Beldray to millions of new households, in a way that’s engaging, memorable and true to the realities of everyday family life. We’re excited to see how consumers respond.”

OXO executes successful cookware marketing campaign OXO’s latest launch into cookware has been supported with online and in-store activations, including an extension of the brand’s longstanding partnership with John Lewis. The cookware launch has been supported by a recent month-long in-store campaign with John Lewis, where the new Mira and Ceramic Pro ranges were displayed on the Cook’s Table installation across 15 stores. Maria Spagnuolo, senior marketing manager EMEA, explained: “Our latest campaign was called 'Cookware. Made the OXO Way' and it marked an important milestone for the brand as a way of supporting the entry of OXO into the cookware category. One of the goals was highlighting credibility, the quality of the brand and a reassurance to our consumers who have experienced the brand with our iconic products, that they will feel the same essence and heritage in the cookware range.” The activation in John Lewis extends a long partnership between the brand and the retailer. Rachel Browne, senior sales manager, UK and Ireland, commented: “The partnership is built on a strong alignment in

values. Both of us are really committed to that quality, trust and delivering the 'above and beyond, exceptional' experiences, which creates a natural synergy in how we work together. Over the years, we've developed a deep understanding for each other’s businesses, allowing us to more effectively drive that mutual growth. “John Lewis has a highly engaged and loyal customer base. So we have to make sure we're tapping into that while we continue to innovate and develop a clear value proposition together.” The campaign also encompassed influencer activity. Maria continued: “We have been working with Alfie Cooks on Instagram. We partnered with this influencer two years ago on other products and have reactivated the partnership for cookware. The results from a digital influencer perspective have been really good.” Overall the launch campaign has been successful. Maria said: “We’ve seen very good

And it was very successful. “We have seen an average of consumer ratings on the new ranges of about 4.8 stars, which means that all the expertise that the product team has put behind this range has been really resonating with the consumers.” There are plans to extend the activity in the second half with another campaign in John Lewis and new retailers. Rachel outlined: “We're already extending into Lakeland, where you will see in select stores that we have both ranges with a little mini shop-inshop and cookware hotspots.” The range will also be showcased at BBC Good Food Show this year to further extend the experiential side of the campaign. Rachel concluded: “We are looking to deepen this kind of engagement further and encourage our customers to participate rather than simply observe our products to give them the real value for the product.”

A total of 11 pallets of products were collected during this year’s campaign. The donated items spanning a wide range of home and consumer goods will be distributed to families in need across the UK. The majority will be channelled through In Kind Direct’s national redistribution network, while remaining stock will support the Rainy Day Trust’s forthcoming ‘Thousand Smiles’ campaign. Anna Skeats, ceo, Rainy Day Trust, commented: “What really stood out was the spirit of generosity and care that runs right through this sector. Exclusively Show is a space where connections, conversations and collaboration can really flourish, and we are so grateful to have been part of it.” The 2027 dates are already locked in, with Exclusively Show set to return to Business Design Centre, London, on 8–9 June 2027. To maximise McCormick Place’s South Hall and create stronger connections across categories, the show will bring together the industry’s core groupings Clean + Contain, Dine + Décor and Wired + Well - into one destination. The North Hall will be established as a Global Marketplace and a dedicated destination for global manufacturing and sourcing. This includes international sourcing exhibitors, select Global Design Point Pavilions and dedicated networking and hospitality spaces, including the International Business Centre, registration and a café. “2026 participants consistently told us how much they appreciated the opportunity to meet face-to-face with decision-makers from the biggest players in the industry, but also to discover new, emerging brands from all over the world,” said Derek. “The diverse mix of buyers, sellers and media professionals makes the show an essential platform for relationship-building and business growth.”

In a deal brokered by Bulldog Licensing, PMS International will launch a wide range of kitchen aids and utensils later this year. The new range of Pinch of Nom-branded products includes bakeware, kitchen utensils and air fryer accessories. The range was introduced to trade at Spring Fair and will launch across a wide range of retail outlets in the UK and Ireland as well as several international territories later this year. The Pinch of Nom name will appear both on the products and packaging to highlight the brand. Future potential categories include kitchen textiles, homeware, small electricals like air fryers, slow cookers and pressure cookers and more kitchen aids and utensils, not to mention food delivery and home baking. John Costi-Mouyia, international sales and licensing director, PMS International, commented: “Pinch of Nom is an ideal brand for a company like ours that aims to bring quality and value into numerous categories – of which kitchenware is a very important one.” Kay Allinson, co-founder, Pinch of Nom, said: “The ongoing success of Pinch of Nom has taken the brand into exciting but also highly appropriate licensing categories that help the Pinch of Nom community in preparing healthy, tasty recipes with the minimum of fuss and expense. Partnering with PMS, which is known for quality and affordability, is a great way to support that aim.” Rob Corney, Bulldog md, added: “The amazing growth of the Pinch of Nom books and ideas has brought strong demand for products that support the ideas and recipes Kate and Kay endorse. These kitchen aids and utensils from a trusted, affordable supplier will, I am sure, be a big hit as the brand continues to expand.”

BHETA highlights European marketplace opportunities BHETA is highlighting the opportunities presented by European online marketplaces ahead of its EU Marketplaces Forum. According to ECDB, marketplaces now account for more than six in every ten Euros spent online across Europe, with their share of ecommerce GMV increasing from 56.2% in 2023 to 60.8% in 2025. As consumer shopping habits continue to shift towards digital platforms, marketplaces are creating new opportunities for brands to reach international customers. Research from Cross-Border Commerce Europe shows that between 2024 and 2025, European marketplaces generated €247.5 billion in cross-border online sales, accounting for 70% of total cross-border ecommerce revenue. For businesses operating in the home improvement, garden, housewares and SDA sectors, this shift presents a significant opportunity. Established marketplaces can provide access to millions of consumers, while offering brands tools, fulfilment solutions and marketing opportunities. However, succeeding in European marketplaces requires more than listing products online. Brands must understand the differences between platforms, customer expectations, regulatory requirements and the practical challenges of international trading. To help businesses navigate the landscape, BHETA’s EU Marketplaces Forum will bring together leading marketplace operators, export

specialists and industry experts on 10 September at the Crowne Plaza NEC, Birmingham. The event will offer presentations from leading platforms including bol, Castorama, Joybuy and TikTok Shop, alongside support from the Department for Business and Trade, BHETA Business Support Providers and specialist partners. The event costs £150 + VAT for BHETA members and £200 + VAT for non-members and includes access to presentations, networking and the opportunity to apply for Meet the Buyer appointments. www.bheta.co.uk/events/export-marketplaces-day

Hanaco joins BHETA

Known for its distinctive ceramic tableware and iconic Gluggle Jug design, Gluggle Jug Factory has joined BHETA. Based in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the UK’s pottery region, The Gluggle Jug Factory continues to produce the original ceramic jugs that have history spanning over 150 years. The brand uses skilled craftsmanship and traditional manufacturing techniques and its products have become recognised for their distinctive fish-shaped design, unique pouring sound and appeal as both tableware and home accessories. With a focus on preserving British ceramic heritage while continuing to introduce the Gluggle Jug to new audiences, the company supplies consumers and retailers seeking characterful, high-quality products for the home.

Hanaco has joined BHETA, bringing 45 years of experience as a specialist wholesaler of consumer electronics and SDA to the association. Based in London, Hanaco has built a strong reputation as a distributor for leading manufacturers including SMEG, Morphy Richards, Roberts Radio, Philips, Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Maxell. The business is known for combining trusted service with competitive pricing, quality brands and reliable supply. Claire Smith, sector manager for Housewares and SEA at BHETA, said: “It’s great to have Hanaco as part of BHETA. They’ve developed a strong position in the consumer electronics space, working with wellknown brands, and we’re looking forward to helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.”

BHETA webinar to focus on Tesco’s packaging ambitions and targets BHETA is set to host an exclusive webinar on 2 September at 14.30, welcoming back Tesco’s lead packaging manager, Paul Earnshaw, to share the retailer’s latest packaging strategy, sustainability priorities and key updates for suppliers. The webinar will provide an update on Tesco’s ‘Red/Amber/Green’ packaging status framework and what this means in practice for companies supplying the retailer. Paul will outline the thinking behind Tesco’s approach to packaging, highlight recent developments and explain PROGRESSIVE

how businesses can align packaging strategies with the retailer’s evolving expectations around sustainability and compliance. The session will conclude with a live Q&A. BHETA’s general manager, Steve Richardson, commented: “This webinar offers an important opportunity for businesses to better understand retailer expectations, stay ahead of changing packaging requirements, and ensure their strategies support future sustainability goals.” Left: Tesco will update attendees on its packaging strategy.

Mr Burnham, don't forget the rest of the high street By Andrew Goodacre, ceo of BIRA

Andrew Goodacre, ceo of Bira, pushes back on the new PM’s support for pubs, clubs and live music venues, asking for the same help to be extended to independent retailers.

W

e have a new Prime Minister and in his first few days in the job, Andy Burnham moved fast. A cap on bus fares. A cut to VAT on household electricity bills. And now, a 20% cut in business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues. I understand why hospitality gets the headlines. Pubs are visible, they are loved and they make for a good photo opportunity. But I have to ask the question that thousands of independent retailers are asking me right now. What about the rest of the high street? This is not the first time hospitality has been singled out for special treatment on business rates. It happened last year too, when changes to the system left many shops facing bills that have more than doubled since 2024, while pubs picked up a discount. Now it has happened again. Meanwhile, the shops, the salons, the bookshops, the boutiques, the fashion stores, the furniture retailers and the gift stores that sit either side of the local pub are left carrying an ever heavier load. 17,000 shops closed in 2025. Many thousands of jobs went with them. That number will keep rising if we carry on treating one sector as the whole story of the high street. This is not about begrudging pubs their support. It is about fairness. A high street only works as a high street when all of it is thriving, not just the parts that make the best TV package. If Mr Burnham is serious about a high street renaissance in every postcode, and his early messaging suggests he is, then he needs a plan that goes further than hospitality. That means permanent reform of business rates for all high street businesses, not a piecemeal discount for one sector at a time. It means finally getting to grips with online marketplace sellers which avoid VAT and undercut shops that play by the rules. And it means closing the low value import loophole that lets cheap goods arrive from overseas without paying their fair share of tax, while our members compete with one hand tied behind their back. Independent retailers are not asking to be treated better than anyone else. They are asking not to be treated as an afterthought. They employ people in every town and city in the country and

19

Above: 17,000 shops closed in they keep high streets recognisable 2025 and Bira is urging the new as high streets, rather than rows of Prime Minister to support all of the high street. empty shopfronts. At Bira, supporting high streets is not a slogan, it is what we do at grassroots level, day in and day out. That work continues this year with the Love Your High Street Awards, which invite the public to nominate and vote for the independent shops that make their high street special, whether that is a bakery, a boutique, a hardware shop or anything in between. Nominations opened on 3 August and close on 30 August. The public vote then opens on 14 September, with the winner announced on 26 October, just ahead of Love Your High Street Week itself, which runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 November. Last year's inaugural awards saw hundreds of independent retailers nominated, with the final contested by eight outstanding shops. The public vote crowned Headhunters, a barber shop in Enniskillen, which has been part of its high street for over four decades, where customers can step next door into a railway museum that the shop has lovingly curated alongside its barbering. That is what independent retail does at its best. If the Prime Minister wants to see what a thriving high street looks like, he does not need to look far. He just needs to look at businesses like Headhunters and the thousands of independents like it, which never stopped showing up for their towns, rain or shine, budget or no budget.

Outstanding Achievement Award at the Excellence in Housewares Awards 2023.

BHETA marks a new chapter As Seema Grantham hands over after seven years with the association, Claire Smith brings fresh retail buying insight to BHETA and Exclusively. For BHETA, the summer of 2026 marks an important transition in its support for the housewares and small electrical appliances sectors. After seven years with the association, Seema Grantham is handing over her role as sector manager for housewares and small electrical appliances, as well as director of sales for Exclusively, to Claire Smith, who joined BHETA on 2 July. It is a change that brings together continuity, respect and fresh perspective. Seema has been a familiar and highly regarded figure

PROGRESSIVE

across the housewares industry for many years, both before and during her time with BHETA. Prior to joining the association, she had already built a strong career in the sector, including as UK sales director at The Cookware Company, where she worked on the strategic and commercial development of the company’s UK brands and built relationships with key retailers including John Lewis, Lakeland and Dunelm. Before that, she spent formative years with Group SEB and DK Household Brands. Seema’s connection with BHETA also pre-dated her executive role. Having previously sat on the Housewares Committee herself, Seema brought to the association a clear understanding of what members need from their trade body: practical support, commercial opportunity, industry intelligence and a trusted route into the wider market conversation. Seema said: “BHETA has been a very special part of my working life, both as a member of the Housewares Committee and then as part of the association team. I have always believed strongly in the value of bringing suppliers together, giving them a voice and creating practical opportunities that help them build relationships with retailers and understand the wider market. “Over the past seven years, I have been fortunate to work with so many brilliant members, colleagues, committee representatives, retailers and industry Inset: Seema sat on the friends. CHANGES AT BHETA

it has been a privilege to support them through BHETA’s events, committees, networking, lobbying and member services. “Exclusively has also been a huge part of my career. I have attended every show for more than 20 years, first from the industry side and then as part of the team helping to deliver it. It is a show I care about deeply because it brings the industry together in such a focused and positive way. Over the past six years, I have been very proud to help develop the show, support exhibitors and work with the team to keep building its value for both suppliers and buyers.” During her time with BHETA, Seema has supported existing members, encouraged new companies into membership and played an active role in delivering added-value initiatives across retailer networking, export and lobbying. She has also been closely involved in BHETA’s specialist committee structure, including the Housewares, Small Electricals and Export Committees, helping to ensure member views are heard and practical industry issues are brought forward. Her work on BHETA’s retailer engagement programme has been particularly visible. Meet the Buyer events have become a central part of the association’s commercial offer to members, giving suppliers direct access to buying teams and giving retailers an efficient route to relevant new products and brands. Seema’s involvement in events with retailers such as John Lewis, TK Maxx and Dobbies reflected her ability to understand both the member and buyer perspective and to make sure suppliers were well briefed and able to make the most of the opportunity. That contribution was appreciated publicly when Seema received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Excellence in Housewares Awards, an accolade recognising her contribution over a 25-year career in the sector. It was a fitting acknowledgment of someone who has been, in the words often used around the industry, ever present in the housewares community. Steve Richardson, general manager of BHETA, said: “Seema has made a significant contribution to BHETA and to the wider housewares and small electricals sectors. She has been a trusted colleague, a strong advocate for members and a familiar face across

the industry. Her experience, relationships and commitment have been hugely valuable and we are very grateful for everything she has done for the association and for Exclusively.” As Seema moves on, BHETA is also looking forward with confidence. Claire Smith joins as the new sector manager for housewares and small domestic electricals and director of sales for Exclusively, bringing more than 20 years’ experience in retail buying across housewares and small electricals. Her career has included senior roles with retailers including Next, Dobbies, Blue Diamond, Beales, TJX and Voisins. That buyer background is highly relevant to BHETA’s next chapter. Claire understands the pressures facing retailers, the importance of product differentiation, the realities of ranging decisions and the need for suppliers to present commercially compelling propositions. Just as importantly, she understands the importance of relationships, timing and clarity in helping suppliers and retailers work together successfully. Claire is also no stranger to Exclusively. Having attended the show as a buyer over many years, she brings first-hand insight into what makes the event valuable from the visitor side, as well as a clear view of how exhibitors can best engage with retailers. That experience will be particularly important as BHETA continues to develop the show and strengthen its role as a focused, curated and commercially useful event for the housewares and small electricals industries. Steve added: “Claire brings a great mix of retail insight, commercial experience and industry relationships. Her perspective as a former buyer will be extremely valuable as we continue to support members, develop retailer engagement and build on the success of Exclusively.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Housewares retailers share how the heatwave has affected trading, what’s hot for summer sales and the new lines they are stocking in-store.

SERVING UP SUMMER KENNY MITCHELL, OWNER, THE SCULLERY “I think it's been a challenging summer this year which has been very strange for us. But what we are doing very well on at the moment is more of our bespoke stuff. We have local people who do pottery for us and we are finding that doing very well - all kinds of pottery, mugs, cookware, things like dressing jugs, lovely oil pourers and so on. “We've also got lots of local artists who do nice linen products for us and items like lovely bone china mugs, trivets, worktop savers. So that's the market that we've done very well in so far this summer, especially with the tourists who visit us up here on the east coast of Scotland.

Inset: Masterclass Casseroles continue to sell well for The Scullery. Right: Borough Kitchen has launched a new spun iron pan with Netherton Foundry.

“Masterclass casseroles from Lifetime Brands do exceptionally well for us. But we've found sales to be a little bit slower in terms of general accessories and cookware that we used to sell a lot of. Your normal utensils like spatulas and tongs and stuff like that has slowed down. “Where we are, we're very lucky as we have a lot of trade fairs that Scottish artists and potters go to and that's where we pick up a lot of our items. Something like Potfest at Scone Palace in Perth is very close to us and there's loads of local pottery people displaying their wares. We find we can pick up nice mugs, pottery, pasta bowls. “We're quite busy at the moment, but I would say some of the cookware lines have

slowed a little bit this year because so many people now are using air fryers and all these gadgets, so we've found it a little bit slower in that market. “What we tend to find is a sunny Saturday doesn't necessarily mean people are coming shopping for cookware and teapots, but are off doing family things. We're in a strong tourist part of the country, so we do get a lot of visitors, which helps top up our sales. But there's been some weeks in the hot weather where it's been a bit of a roller coaster. You know, you've got your bumper days and you've also had a lot quieter ones. So the weather definitely impacts on that, especially at the weekends I would say.”

KASHA TARASIUK, HEAD OF BUYING, BOROUGH KITCHEN “The biggest trend this summer is customers investing in products that are useful, beautiful and built to last, rather than buying something purely for the season. We're seeing a real appetite for relaxed outdoor cooking and hosting, with demand for barbecue cooking, cast iron, serving boards, glassware and versatile ceramics that move from kitchen to table. “Natural materials such as wood, linen, ceramic, stainless steel and cast iron continue to resonate, reflecting a broader shift towards craftsmanship and longevity. We're seeing customers choose pieces that perform brilliantly, look beautiful and become part of their everyday cooking and entertaining for years to come. “We've introduced some fantastic new products for summer. One of the standouts is the stainless steel version of our popular Blok Table Grill, which is perfect for outdoor cooking and entertaining. “We've also launched a heavy-duty spun iron frying pan in collaboration with Netherton Foundry. Handmade in Shropshire, it's pre-seasoned, suitable for all hob types, ovens and barbecues and offers the performance of cast iron in a lighter-weight pan. “Alongside that, we've added Richard Brendon's ultra-light crystal tumblers and new pastel Peugeot Bistro mills, both perfect for summer tables, with the much anticipated Fellow Series 1 Espresso Machine and Opus 2 Grinder launching soon.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

JASON SOMERS, GENERAL MANAGER, DIVERTIMENTI “The biggest trend that I've seen as a switch, in terms of this year compared to previous years is that in the last three or four years, people were really investing in barbecues and pizza ovens. We're not seeing that continue as strong as it had been. Now it is about rather than buying melamine and plastic tableware, consumers are tending to buy a lot more decorative and vibrant plates and more indoor ceramics and really nice tableware that they're taking outside, which I haven't seen in the past. “Rather than people buying semi disposable plastic ware and melamine, they're investing that extra £10 per plate and buying another nice set for outdoors. We're still selling a fair amount of melamine, but it's the first time that we've got people wanting something nice for outdoor dining. We haven't sold that many barbecues this year, but people are still thinking about their outdoor spaces. The tableware that we sell isn't cheap, so it's a decent sell for us. “The Brompton Road customers are temperamental - if it's too hot, they won't come out. If it's too cold, they won't come out. So it's finding that balance. We've got a lot more tourists in than locals at the moment. If someone is coming out to us throughout the summer, most of the time they know what they're looking for. They've done their research. So the opportunity to try and cross-sell them or upsell is minimal, because they're quite direct in what they're looking for. “We've never been big on hydration, we had the sort of Chilly bottle bubble in 2017 and 2018 and then it went on a slump from there. But we are selling a fair amount of hydration and outdoor products again now – we have stocked the Le Creuset range, which is selling very consistently in-store. “We're in a really saturated area of London, where not everyone has a garden. But what we're noticing is even people without a garden are still looking for those bright, vibrant colours in napkins and tableware to imitate that outdoor life inside the house. That's probably the biggest key for us at the moment - even people without gardens want that feeling of being in an Italian garden setting, but they're having that in Kensington, Chelsea and Fulham flats.”

Inset: Hydration has been popular at Divertimenti, particularly the Le Creuset range.

KEITH CROWTHER, OWNER, LA COOKSHOP “Relaxed outdoor living will obviously be a growth sector this summer, although we are not in that sector apart from ice cube trays and picnic tableware. “There are certainly more people around in the good weather as the days are dry; it’s better than when we have wet British summers. It encourages customers to linger longer and spend. “We had lots of new lines launched in spring by a number of suppliers that have now been delivered and are in-store.”

MARK GLIDDON, OWNER, GLIDDONS COOKSHOP “Whatever TikTok or Facebook advertising decides is going to be the housewares summer thing, will be the trend. Our customers are very lead for requests by that sadly. “The recent weather has had just below average footfall, but poor conversion to sales, although I personally think that could be due to global affairs rather than the weather. “Newness for us is not just for summer hopefully, so we have added the new KitchenCraft bowls as an addition to the popular pasta bowls, as well as quite a few of the CKS new lines launched at Exclusively housewares.”

Above left: Gliddons Cookshop has added the new KitchenCraft bowls to its offering. Right: The Scullery has seen strong sales for locally made pottery this summer.

SHOW PREVIEW: IFA BERLIN

IFA returns to Berlin from 4 -8 September for its 2026 edition with the motto of ‘The future is now’ which is particularly relevant for the home. PH chats to the show organiser and key exhibitors to find out what the plans are for this year’s event.

THE FUTURE IS NOW I FA Berlin is set to be a very strong edition for the home appliances and housewares sector. Leif Lindner, ceo, IFA Management, tells PH: “Many of the technologies that were once discussed as future ideas are now becoming part of everyday life: smarter kitchens, connected appliances, AI-supported cooking and cleaning, energy efficient products, robotic systems, air quality solutions and outdoor living.” The home appliances area at IFA will put smart kitchens, energy efficient appliances and connected home solutions centre stage. “What makes this exciting,” continues Leif, “is that these topics are no longer separate categories. They are part of a wider shift in how people live at home.” IFA offers a very practical view of that shift for buyers and media. Leif explains: “You can see the products, meet the brands, understand the trends and discover how innovation is moving from individual appliances into connected living ecosystems. “This direction is reflected in the content programme, with sessions looking at robotics in the kitchen and home, AI in the kitchen, the next decade of kitchens, food and home,

repair and refurbishment and how connected home technologies can support health and longevity.” This glimpse into the future of the home is in line with IFA’s direction. “We want to continue developing IFA as the leading global platform for the future of the home,” explains Leif. “For the housewares sector, this means even stronger visibility for the themes that are shaping the category: smarter kitchens, connected living, sustainability, energy efficiency, AI, automation, repairability, wellness, personal care and outdoor living.” With this in mind, Leif believes the show is a must-attend for buyers in the sector: “IFA gives housewares buyers a complete view of where the home is heading. IFA is not about seeing individual products on a stand. It is about understanding the wider consumer trends behind them. How will people cook in the future? How will they clean? How will they manage their energy use? How will they use AI in the kitchen? How will connected appliances, robotics, air quality, wellness and outdoor living change the way people think about the home?”

ULTIMATE PRODUCTS IFA provides an important event for both of Ultimate Products’ flagship brands. Tracy Carroll, chief marketing officer, explains: “For Salter, it’s the perfect stage to introduce the latest innovations, while for Beldray, it supports its continued growth by demonstrating how we’re evolving the brand with new product launches and campaigns.” The energy at the show is one of the highlights for Ultimate Products. Tracy continues: “The atmosphere at IFA is unlike any other with high energy and a buzz in the halls, where brands, retailers and industry experts all come together to share ideas. For us, it’s incredibly rewarding to see Salter and Beldray showcased alongside key players in the sector.” The focus for Salter at the show is on entertaining and hosting at home. There are a number of launches across appliances centred around protein, as well as cooling appliances. For Beldray, the spotlight is on steam products and the Steam Team campaign, which positions Beldray as the trusted expert in everyday steam care across garment care and home cleaning.

MORPHY RICHARDS Morphy Richards sees IFA as one of the most important global events in the consumer electronics calendar. David Foulstone, commercial director, comments: “It provides the opportunity to showcase innovations to an international audience, strengthen relationships and meet new customers from around the world. It’s also an invaluable platform for understanding emerging consumer trends. “The diversity of visitors and international reach make IFA truly unique. It’s also an excellent chance to see how innovation is shaping the future of the home appliance market.” Morphy Richards will unveil a number of new product ranges at the show, including its latest breakfast collections, new food preparation and cooking solutions that focus on convenience, performance and usability, as well as products that reflect the growing consumer demand for smarter, more energy-conscious appliances.

MARKET FOCUS: BAKEWARE

During challenging economic periods, bakeware is often a sector which remains strong as consumers reach for low-cost, home-based activities rooted in comfort, while also entertaining at home more. Key suppliers explain how the category is faring and what’s new in baking.

THE UPPER CRUST T

he bakeware sector seems to be thriving in the current economic downturn. Becky Firth, head of product, Meyer Group, begins: “Bakeware remains a healthy and resilient category, with year-on-year growth of circa 42%. Consumers continue to embrace baking for everything from creating homemade treats and celebrating special moments, to trying new recipes or simply enjoying baking as a mindful hobby. “While shoppers are becoming more selective, demand for the category remains strong, demonstrating that baking continues to play an important role in everyday life.” Emma Lewis-Jones, product director, Lifetime Brands, furthers: “The category continues to show real resilience. Rather than chasing short-lived trends, consumers are returning to the basics, investing in essentials they’ll use again and again. “Classic products such as cake tins, loaf pans and baking trays remain at the heart of

the category. It’s less about novelty and more about creating products that become kitchen companions for years to come.” Rachel Harrison, senior product developer, Salter Bakeware, agrees: “The outlook for the UK bakeware market remains positive, supported by consumers’ continued enthusiasm for home cooking and baking. Although shoppers are becoming more considered in their purchasing decisions, they are still willing to invest in products that deliver superior performance, versatility and longevity.” Social media has played its part in driving sales. Mark Kinsey, sales manager, HAUS, begins: “It obviously helps that baking lends itself exceptionally well to reels and videos across social media. Influencers have really helped to demystify a lot of baking processes giving followers the confidence to

attempt just about anything.” Pauline Clements, UK sales and marketing, Nordic Ware, adds: “Social media trends such as sheet-pan dinners and batch cooking are accelerating replacement cycles, but consumers are only willing to upgrade if the new item promises real longevity and performance, reinforcing the market’s steady move toward premium, durable bakeware.” In terms of what consumers are looking for, it’s no surprise that performance is at the top of the list. Rachel comments: “Performance remains at the heart of what consumers expect from bakeware but value for money is equally important. Many are adopting a ‘buy once, buy well’ mindset, investing in bakeware that offers premium performance and stands the test

of time, rather than opting for cheaper that needs replacing more frequently.” Christina Collis, B2B marketing executive, Dayes, furthers: “Performance is still the biggest priority. Reliable heat distribution, durable construction and high-quality nonstick coatings are all essential, but sustainability is becoming just as important. “PFAS-free coatings, recycled materials and recyclable packaging are moving from being ‘nice to have’ features to genuine consumer expectations. Versatility is another key consideration.” Marie Dobbels, marketing director retail, The Cookware Company, agrees: “Health and sustainability are major drivers. Consumers are increasingly informed about the materials used in their cookware and bakeware, with growing interest in PFAS-free nonstick coatings and products designed to last. There is a clear shift towards performance-led products.” Materials have been an important consideration for Nimbus, too. Laura Squire, director, explains: “Following recent BBC coverage, consumer awareness of so-called ‘forever chemicals’ has increased significantly, driving interest in PFAS-free bakeware options. Falcon bakeware is benefiting from this trend, as its porcelain enamel coating contains no PFAS or forever chemicals.” Emma continues: “As consumers look beyond traditional nonstick coatings, timeless materials are making a comeback.

Vitreous enamel is a fast-growing trend, combining heritage appeal with performance bakers expect. “Tough, durable and naturally resistant to scratches, stains and warping, vitreous enamel is proving that old school really does know best.” Becky adds: “Ceramic coated and glass bakeware are gaining momentum as alternatives to PTFE nonstick coatings, while performance and durability remain non-negotiable. Consumers want products that deliver reliable results, stand up to everyday use and earn a long-term place in the kitchen.” In a crowded market, recognised brands are important. Nick Lenkowski, bakeware sales and marketing manager, What More, comments: “Strong brands play a vital role in influencing purchase decisions. With limited time and more choices available than ever, consumers increasingly rely on trusted brands for reassurance on quality and performance. BetterWare benefits from strong heritage and consumer recognition, helping retailers drive category sales.” Style also needs to be considered. Marie says: “Aesthetically, consumers want bakeware that looks as good as it performs. Stylish, premium finishes that can move seamlessly from oven to table or open shelving are increasingly important.” Laura adds: “There is a growing appreciation for the timeless appeal of Falcon’s iconic white enamel with its handapplied blue rim. Falcon enamel bakeware offers excellent performance, moving seamlessly from oven to table.” Marc adds: “We have noticed a trend towards pieces that can be used for both baking and serving. Madeleine from Emile Henry has experienced big growth over the past year due to its multi-purpose use as professional quality bakeware and impeccable serveware. There is a desire to not only bake from scratch, but to also entertain friends or family and enjoy the results together.” Christina continues: “Today’s consumers want bakeware that looks good enough to leave out on display, with contemporary colourways and coordinated collections helping products stand out both on the shelf and on social media.” PROGRESSIVE

Natural tones are popular for Nordic Ware. Pauline says: “Natural earth inspired design was highlighted in the Trend Showcase at Exclusively and our Prism Baking Sheets were chosen as they fit the organic sculptured aesthetics spoken about.” Changes in the way people cook are being reflected in bakeware trends. Pavlina Nikolova, trade marketing and digital manager UK, IE & Nordics, Pyrex, outlines: “While traditional baking remains important, we are seeing cooking habits evolve with the growth of the air fryer market in the UK, leading shoppers to seek products that work across multiple appliances and occasions.” Outdoor dining is the final puzzle piece. Nick tells PH: “Climate change is also influencing eating habits, with warmer summers driving increased outdoor cooking and dining. To support this trend, What More UK launched the patented Sizzll range, designed for both indoor and outdoor cooking. The range helps consumers achieve better BBQ cooking results while extending bakeware sales into the traditionally quieter summer season.”

icensed housewares as a category was worth $357bn in 2025, with some predicting it will be worth $533bn by 2035. According to trade body, Licensing International, sales of licensed housewares reached $52bn last year, accounting for 14% of the market. Ella Haynes, event director, Brand Licensing Europe, which takes place from 6-8 October at Excel London, begins: “Housewares is an interesting category for brands to explore

Licensing is an important revenue stream for several housewares suppliers, with everything from celebrities and children’s brands, to heritage properties finding a place in the home. PH finds out what’s hot in licensed housewares.

because it covers such a broad range of products, many of which are essential items that we use every single day – kettles, crockery, cookware, etc. So, the potential for building brand loyalty and nurturing consumer connection is ripe. “These are frequently not one-off purchases either, which is another plus; we buy housewares items multiple times during our lifetime, either as we redecorate, move home, level up or they reach the end of their lifespan.” Licensed housewares also bring brands into everyday lives. Ella continues: “Licensing embeds brands into daily routines – cooking, eating, living – increasing touchpoints and loyalty.” Brands also deepen consumer connection. “A strong emotional connection with brands drives consumers to choose licensed products over generic alternatives,” explains Ella, “and we’re happy to pay higher prices for them. We want products that align with our values and aesthetics and which showcase PROGRESSIVE

our personalities to friends and family.” There are certain attributes which help ensure a brand will fit well in the housewares sector. Bryony Dyer, managing director, Dexam, comments: “The best licensed brands for housewares are the ones that bring a clear point of view to the home: brands with instant recognition, strong emotional connection and a natural fit with how people cook, serve, store and live. “In practice, that often means food brands, heritage brands, chef-led brands, lifestyle brands and trusted names with an authentic reason to exist in the kitchen or dining space.” Ella agrees: “Food, beverage and culinary brands are a given when it comes to kitchenware extensions because they are already known to us and have brand authority and consumer credibility. Similarly, wellness and sustainability brands have a natural alignment to housewares given the ongoing trends in health, eco-materials, work life balance and home comfort.” She continues: “Luxury and premium brands also fare well as housewares acts as a natural extension of lifestyle positioning and needs products to suit every consumer demographic.” Hira Ibrahim, general manager, VQ, furthers: “The brands that already mean something to people before you have put a product on

MARKET FOCUS: LICENSING a shelf work the best. Heritage lifestyle brands work best for us, like Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston, because they come with an existing world attached, a colour palette, values. A customer who already trusts the name in one part of her home and is happy to see it turn up in another. “It also helps with retail buyers, not just end consumers. A buyer already knows what a Laura Ashley customer looks like and what she spends, so the conversation moves faster and the shelf space is easier to earn. And brands with a genuine design archive behind them, decades of prints and patterns to draw on, give us far more creative runway than a brand that only has one or two signature looks.” Jake Doney, design manager, Captivate Brands, continues: “The strongest licensed brands are those with a clear visual identity and an authentic lifestyle story that naturally translates into the home. Consumers are increasingly looking to create homes that reflect their personality, so brands with recognisable aesthetics, heritage or a distinct point of view perform particularly well.” The types of brands working well largely depends on the category, of course. Minke Vos, product manager, Mepal, outlines: “For children’s products, entertainment and character brands work particularly well. Brands like Disney, Marvel, Paramount and Little Dutch create strong emotional connections with both children and parents. Last year we introduced Peppa Pig and Hot Wheels and Barbie from Mattel as well to stay relevant.” Regional differences must also be considered. Minke adds: “We focus on brands that are strong, relevant and well recognised in our key markets –

Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. Brand relevance, regional appeal and alignment with our product categories are essential. We focus on licences that complement our brand values and enhance the experience of our core target group – primarily young families.” Brands that are aligned with the products are also important. Amit Juneja, managing director, Benross, comments: “The most successful licensed brands in the sector are those that have a natural synergy with the category and a genuine affiliation with the products they represent. “Consumers are looking for brands they know and trust, but it’s equally important that the licence feels authentic rather than simply having a logo applied to a product. We look for brands with strong consumer recognition, a reputation for quality and innovation and values that naturally translate into the home. “When there is a clear connection between the brand’s heritage and the category, consumers have greater confidence

in their purchase and retailers benefit from stronger sell-through.” Forming a partnership with the brand owners is important when working to ensure licensed product is true to the brand. Melanie Kemper, marketing specialist, Keeeper, outlines: “We work closely with our licensing partners throughout the entire development process – from the first design concepts to final approval. Every element including colours, graphics, materials, packaging and product quality, must reflect the brand’s identity and comply with the licensor’s guidelines. “At the same time, we ensure that the

products meet our own quality and functionality standards, so they deliver on both the brand promise and consumer expectations.” Carmel Wright, marketing manager, Trends UK, continues: “Stor has become a trusted housewares brand in more than 100 countries across five continents and as its catalogue continues to grow, Stor’s in-house teams are committed to ensuring the design and creation of new ranges ring true to the brand.” With all that in mind, there is a number of ways that suppliers ensure they are choosing the right brands to work with. Hira begins: “For us it really comes down to fit. Does the brand’s style genuinely suit the home, do the people who already love it seem like they’d want it in their kitchen too and is there actually space for it in housewares rather than it being crowded already? “We also tend to gravitate towards brands that have been around and loved for a long time, rather than whatever happens to be trending right now. And on a practical level, it just works better when the brand wants to stay close to the process; the partnerships we’re proudest of are the ones that feel like a genuine collaboration, rather than us simply licensing a name.” Longevity is also considered. Amit furthers: “We also consider the long-term potential of a brand. The strongest licensing partnerships allow us to build complete product ranges that retailers can confidently support over multiple seasons, rather than focusing on one-off products. Working collaboratively with licensors who share our commitment to innovation, product quality and consumer value is equally important.” Working well with the licensor is important. Bryony explains: “It is important that the

partnership is collaborative and commercially realistic. The best are built on shared ambition, clear standards and a mutual understanding of growing the brand in an authentic and sustainable way.” Credibility is a priority for Captivate Brands. Jake adds: “Authenticity is at the heart of every collection we develop. We work closely with our licensing partners throughout the design process, ensuring every product reflects the brand’s DNA rather than simply applying artwork to an existing product. “Our design team spends time understanding what makes each brand distinctive, from colour palettes and print direction through to materials, finishes and product styling. Every detail is considered to ensure the collection feels like a genuine extension to the brand.” Trends UK requires inspirational brands. Carmen comments: “Our portfolio of brands all have one thing in common: they spark imagination. Stor’s licensed housewares are successful because they give kids the chance to immerse themselves even more in their favourite worlds. Whether it’s taking Bluey and Bingo along on a picnic or sitting down at teatime with Disney Stitch, the products bring favourite characters to life in an authentic and practical way.” Overall, the sector is strong. Melanie says: “The market for licensed housewares remains attractive, particularly when the brand has a strong emotional connection with consumers. People are willing to pay a premium for products that remind them of cherished characters, childhood memories or passions. However this only works when the product itself delivers clear added value. Quality, functionality and durability remain the key purchasing factors.”

Inset: Character licensed brands continue to perform strongly in housewares for Trends UK and the Stor brand.

Hira concludes: “It is a strong and growing space. People are spending more time and care on their homes than they used to and that has made housewares a place where personal style and brand loyalty both show up in a way they did not a few years ago. “Consumers will pay a premium, but only when it is earned. What they are paying for is not the logo, it is the confidence that the product will look and perform the way the brand has trained them to expect. “Where we have seen real growth is with customers who already own the brand in one form and simply want more of that same look and feel in their kitchen or living room.”

MARKET FOCUS: TOOLS AND GADGETS

Inset: OXO’s Precision Handheld Mandoline delivers the versatility and precision of a full-sized mandoline in a compact, handheld format. Below: Taylor’s Eye Witness has seen strong demand within the Sabatier Professional brand where consumers are seeking robust, professional grade utensils that match their cookware choices.

The tools and gadgets sector is a staple for cookshops and with many suppliers and product development teams reinventing classics, and creating completely new innovation, there’s plenty to keep the offering fresh and exciting.

GRATE EXPECTATIONS L ower price points and the scope to continuously innovate, together with sustained interest in home cooking, have meant that the tools and gadgets sector has remained resilient in recent years. Rachel Browne, senior sales manager, UK & Ireland, OXO, begins: “The tools and gadgets category remains one of the strongest areas within housewares, because it sits at the heart of everyday cooking. “While food trends continue to evolve, consumers consistently look for products that make preparing meals quicker, easier and more enjoyable. Products that solve everyday challenges and earn a permanent place in the kitchen help drive repeat purchases, recommendations and sustained category growth.” Gareth McNeil, director of industrial design and innovation, Joseph Joseph, agrees: “Despite ongoing economic pressures, the sector remains resilient. Consumers are becoming more considered in their purchasing decisions, placing greater emphasis on quality, durability and long-term value. Brands that can solve genuine everyday problems and Inset: Mobi works with consumers to tailor its products to meet their daily needs.

deliver meaningful user benefits continue to perform well in an increasingly competitive market.” The trend for food prep is also key to the sector’s strength. Rachel Harrison, senior product developer, Ultimate Products, explains: “We’re seeing continued growth in food preparation, driven by increasing interest in healthier eating, meal planning and scratch cooking. So as people prepare more fresh ingredients, they demand reliable, highperforming kitchen tools.” For suppliers, however, it is a competitive market. Paul Marchant, business development manager, Kuhn Rikon, outlines: “It’s a tough sector and a busy one, but there are always customers looking for innovation and to add that one gadget missing from their drawers.” Laurence Smith, director, Vitality House, adds: “It remains competitive with more brands moving away from their core, into tools and gadgets as a quick win for extra sales. This can drive value out of the market which is why, at Mobi, we like to be a little different and offer innovation, modernity and fun.” This innovation needs to answer questions in the kitchen. Monika Wasowska, product manager – home and outdoor, RKW, says: “The focus needs to be on solving real kitchen challenges. Consumers want products that support the way they cook day-to-day, rather than gadgets that serve one limited purpose or take up valuable drawer space.” David Kidd, creative director, Taylor’s Eye Witness, furthers: “Successful tools and gadgets need to solve a genuine consumer need while remaining durable and enjoyable PROGRESSIVE

to use. Consumers increasingly expect products that not only perform well, but also stand up to years of regular use. “Material choice has become important. As awareness grows around sustainability, food safety and product lifespan, manufacturers must carefully consider the environmental impact, safety credentials and durability of the materials they use.” Heidi Thomas, head of marketing, DK Household Brands, continues: “Consumers are increasingly looking for products that are built to last, use smarter materials and come with less packaging waste. Across Zyliss, this is reflected in the use of wheat straw materials in selected components, recyclable packaging and a wider focus on durability as a key part of responsible design.”

Durability is a key focus alongside sustainability. Phil Ellwood, managing director, Whitby & Co, says: “Consumers are looking for products that offer genuine value, whether that’s through quality, longevity or versatility. Rather than buying disposable items, many people are investing in products that will last for years. Brand heritage and trust also play an important role, particularly where cutting tools are concerned, as buyers want confidence in both performance and safety.” Heidi continues: “Heritage and relevance really matter. Zyliss is celebrating 75 years of kitchen innovation and many of the products that helped define the brand are still incredibly relevant today, from the garlic press to the salad spinner and food chopper. What has changed is the execution. These tools have been reimagined for modern kitchens, with improved ergonomics, smarter storage, more considered materials and a design language that feels current.” Gary Porter, director, KitchenAid, adds: “Quality and durability are fundamental, but equally important is creating tools that feel intuitive. Good design should never compete with functionality. Instead it should enhance it through ergonomic forms, balanced weight and materials built to withstand everyday use. “For KitchenAid, design is also about recognisability. The latest tools and gadgets collection features a lighter, more ergonomic handle inspired by the iconic KitchenAid Stand Mixer, extending the brand’s distinctive design language across the countertop.” Space is at a premium, so multifunctional tools are also popular. Rachel Browne comments: “Consumers are becoming much more selective about the products they bring into their kitchens. Rather than filling drawers with single-purpose gadgets, they’re investing in versatile tools that simplify cooking and deliver consistently good results.” Monika adds: “Versatility is important, particularly where products can support a variety of meals and cooking styles.” Gareth agrees: “We’re seeing a continued

focus on improving performance, making better use of space and elevating products through premium materials and finishes. While trends vary across different categories, consumers consistently value products that are multifunctional, space efficient and thoughtfully designed, delivering both practical benefits and visual appeal.” Nicola Huckerby, sales manager, Taylor’s Eye Witness, says: “Consumers want products that complement broader homeware trends. As more households invest in premium cookware and home cooking experiences, they are looking for utensils and gadgets that offer professional-quality performance and a cohesive aesthetic.”

Laurence adds: “Kerb appeal on shelf and online is becoming more important. The look and design are essential. Very often the products are either on display or regularly in use out on the worktop and consumers can make a statement with the tools and gadgets they show off at home.” Classic design is popular: “There’s also an appreciation for classic, well-crafted tools that combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design,” offers Above: Lifetime Brands’ KitchenAid Tools & Gadgets collection launched in AW25 and comprises 21 new SKUs across three colours with a more ergonomic handle. Phil, “which is something brands like Opinel do exceptionally well.” Paul agrees: “How can we make a task easier or simpler? Would be the first question. How can we make this tool more elegant, more affordable or simpler to produce might follow.” Comfort is also important. Rachel Harrison explains: “Consumers also expect products to feel comfortable to use and be easy to clean. Ergonomics have become increasingly important, particularly as more people cook from scratch. Soft touch handles and balanced weight can make food preparation quicker, safer and more enjoyable.” In conclusion, Gary sums up the category well: “The most successful kitchen tools don’t reinvent the cooking experience; they refine it. Great product development starts with understanding how people really cook, identifying everyday frustrations and designing products that solve them with simplicity and precision.”

MARKET FOCUS: GLASSWARE AND BARWARE

While prices of alcohol have increased steeply recently, glassware and barware sales are holding their own as consumers choose to stay at home and therefore look to create bar and restaurant style atmospheres themselves.

T

he drop in numbers of consumers eating and drinking out has created a resilient market for glassware and barware. Rachel Browne, senior sales manager UK and Ireland, OXO, begins: “Home entertaining continues to create strong momentum across the category, but we’re also seeing a broader shift towards more considered purchasing. Consumers are increasingly choosing fewer, better-quality tools that deliver professional results and become permanent fixtures in their kitchens, rather than buying single purpose gadgets. “Premiumisation remains one of the biggest trends. As consumers continue to recreate experiences they would previously have enjoyed in bars and restaurants, they’re investing in quality spirits, experimenting with signature drinks and building home bars they can enjoy year-round.” Bertrand Pichon, head of international

retail sales, Ritzenhoff Crystal, furthers: “It’s not just about a simple glass any more; it is about ‘little luxuries’ and emotional connection. “People are hosting more at home, so they want beautiful statement

pieces that look great on the table and work as excellent gifts.” Heidi Thomas, head of marketing, DK Household Brands, adds: “One of the biggest trends in barware is the growing demand for premium experiences at home. Consumers are recreating restaurant and bar-quality moments in their own homes, driving interest in products that enhance serving, presentation and enjoyment.” This could be one of the factors leading consumers to educate themselves about wine. Peter Dunne, director, Fimex UK, explains: “With regards to barware at Fimex, we are seeing a huge uplift in wine education. The public wants to know more about their wines and grapes. Our wine

aroma gift sets have been produced to help with aroma knowledge and offer a fun and affordable way to become more involved.” Durability is important for glassware. Gareth Till, sales director, Dexam, comments: “Consumers choose glassware and barware that look good and is practical. They want pieces that suit everyday life.” Isabelle Jones, trade sales executive, Rinkit, agrees: “Consumers expect glassware to withstand regular use. Dishwasher safe products and lead-free crystal that offers excellent strength are increasingly sought after.” Design is, of course, also a key consideration. Katie Cryer, head of sales UK (trade), Robert Welch, outlines: “For us, it starts with the initial design appeal. Both of our stainless-steel barware ranges, Drift and Dorset, are aesthetically pleasing, but what sets them apart is that they are also highly functional. Each piece is designed to be clever, not just beautiful, blending timeless elegance with trusted performance.” Colour is popular for Dexam. Gareth says: “Colour is taking off – our Sintra Glassware range shows a small, wellchosen palette can sell. For Dexam it’s about two things: sustainability and

colour. Recycled glass, like our Cellardine recycled glasses, is growing in popularity as shoppers seek eco options that still look great. Bold, tonal glass – coloured stems and tumblers – is back in vogue.” Inset: Products such as AdHoc’s pourers and aerators have become more popular as people look to unlock the full flavour profile of their wines.

Some design trends don’t always work well in the home environment. Janice Proctor, commercial director, Dartington Crystal expands: “There has been a trend for extra fine, long wine glass stems, but customers seem to be frightened of breakages and prefer more durable, wellbalanced wine glasses.” She continues: “There is a trend for vintage and retro

glassware at the moment and we see through the enquiries we receive for some of our original suites, such as Sharon, which was created in 1971.” Richard Walker, managing director, Eddingtons, agrees: “The Stelton collection designed by Francis Cayouette, directly aligns with every major market shift toward tactile aesthetics and functional versatility. “The most prominent trend Pilastro captures is the consumer obsession with nostalgia and vintage aesthetics aligned with ‘vintage revival’ and art deco. The Play on Light’s textured, ribbed design serves a sensory purpose by catching and scattering light. This elevates the presentation of simple liquids like water or matcha, fulfilling the consumer demand for an ‘Instagrammable’ visual experience.” Paul Spencer, owner, Original Products is seeing demand for more unusual designs: “Consumers want products that reflect their interests and personalities, whether that’s sport, animals, cocktails or their favourite spirit. “Vintage and retro influences remain popular. Textured finishes, coloured glass and premium presentation continue to feature strongly. Products with a point of difference, such as our new spirit smokers, or a story behind them, continue to stand out.” How the product feels is considered. Isabelle comments: “Weight, balance and fine rims contribute significantly to the perception of quality. Consumers often associate thinner

rims and well-balanced stems with more premium products.” Products that improve the experience also play a part. Peter explains: “Aerating and breathing red wine is still very much on the agenda, a real table talking theatre product is the Vin Bouquet By The Glass Wine Breather as it breathes wine in an instant, direct from bottle to the glass to maximise the full flavour, also voted by IndyBest as the best wine pourer in 2025.” Barware sales depend on functionality. Rachel comments: “Consumers are becoming more considered in how they shop for barware. Rather than buying novelty accessories for occasional use, they’re investing in well-made tools that deliver reliable performance and complement the way they entertain at home.” Heidi expands: “Shoppers increasingly expect products to enhance the drinking experience, as well as complement their home décor. They are seeking high-quality, well-designed accessories that help them enjoy wine, champagne and entertaining occasions with greater ease and sophistication.” Overall, the sector is faring well. Richard says: “The sector is not as buoyant as usual, but the impact that cost of living is having on housing moves certainly has impacted sales. However with the summer of fine weather and new additions to the Pilastro range, we are still seeing strong interest.” Paul adds: “Despite ongoing economic pressure, consumers are still prepared to spend on products that offer something different. Retailers continue to look for genuine newness, particularly products that stand out, work well as gifts and encourage impulse purchases.”

Above: Oxo’s barware collection combines premium materials with practical, user-led design.

Some are seeing relatively strong sales. Bertrand concludes: “The market is actually very resilient, but the dynamic is changing. “People are buying less volume, but they are spending more money per piece on high-quality, branded crystal. Of course, production costs and energy are a challenge for the industry today. But for us, entering the UK market right now is a fantastic opportunity.”

Katie continues: “Our barware continues to perform particularly well during the summer months and throughout the festive season when consumers are looking to make entertaining at home feel more special.”

EXECUTIVE PROFILE Jim Clawley

Below: Electrolux is one of many brands in Eurosonic Group’s portfolio.

How long have you been at Eurosonic Group? I’ve been with the business for just over three years now, coming in originally as commercial director and having recently taken on the role of ceo.

What was your career history prior to Eurosonic Group? My career started in sales with Seiko many moons ago. From there I learned a lot at Peers Hardy about brand development, national accounts and product development. I then took on a role with Ultimate Products where I eventually became group sales director and then trading director. I then started my own business, Momentum Consult, developing brands and new products using the experience gained over the previous 11-12 years. I created a wearable brand startup, Nuband, which went on to have international success and worked with a watch brand called AVI-8. John Knight from Eurosonic Group and I had stayed in touch from our UP days and when the opportunity came up to work with the company after 10 years of doing my own thing, I couldn’t resist it.

Favourite part of your job? It’s now more the team development and seeing individuals grow within their roles, becoming integral parts of the business. It’s also nice implementing new elements and watching them benefit the company.

Least favourite part of your job? Least favourite part is having to be patient. You want everything to happen overnight, but you know it doesn’t. Change management in some cases can be frustrating when you don’t see immediate results.

Who is the unsung hero of the company? Unsung hero… there are actually a few and it’s hard to choose. Jude and Minh in design have progressed tremendously over the past year and their hard work and creativity is appreciated. Also, Jennie in merchandising has come on really well over the last year and is often one of the last people to leave.

You’ve got to have brands Jim Clawley, ceo, Eurosonic Group, takes the hotseat to talk about patience, team development and calming influences. What is the biggest change within the housewares industry that you have seen since you have worked in it? The most notable thing I’ve seen is around design and quality. The industry is super competitive these days and the standards are higher than ever.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? To only worry about what you can change and don't sweat what you can't. Mike Morgan, my old area manager, said this to me. He knew I was a bit of a perfectionist back then and he had a calming influence on me.

Biggest lesson you’ve taken away from the last year? You’ve got to have brands and you have got to understand where they sit effectively. The market is getting very depressed in terms of opportunity so you must have a point of difference.

If you could change one thing about the housewares industry, what would it be and why? I’d ask that buyers were a little more daring. It can be a bit paint by numbers which can make innovation and newness difficult PROGRESSIVE

to find a place. Amazon stole a march as it gave brands a platform. I believe customers still want to shop at their favourite retailers, but they need to see more from these stores.

If you didn’t work in the housewares industry, what industry would you work in and why? I would be working in sports development or youth development. I absolutely love sport and when I retire, I’ll do something in coaching or development, hopefully within athletics.
