T
hings to be grateful for – a long and seemingly endless summer. However, despite the sunshine, on the high street it’s been a different story, with 2026 a year of retail discontent for many retailers. In a no holds barred, hard-hitting two hour Retail Round Table at Harrogate Home & Gift last month, gift retailers, in locations as far afield as Carlisle to Salcombe, were in agreement about the challenges they’re up against. Turn to pages 19-21 to read a candid account of what they had to say. Bucking the trend however, is the Gift Universe Group – owner of gift multiple MenKind - which has fanfared a record-breaking year, with an ambitious roll out of new stores high on the agenda. Founder and executive chairman, Paul Kraftman, and managing director Gary Wakeman, tell PG&H how they’ve done it. Turn to pages 30-31. Elsewhere in this issue, we might be basking in our umpteenth heatwave, but Christmas and festive windows are very much in play now, with Michael Apter, owner of Paper Tiger - the winner of The Greats Best Display category – along with two Display category finalists, Cornucopia and Attico, revealing how they will be approaching their window
displays this year and where their inspiration has come from. Turn to pages 33-37. Meanwhile, it was a joy to spend the day with Amy Hogarth, founder of CAHM – winner of The Greats Best Newcomer category – at her shop-cum-workshop in the village of Farsley in West Yorkshire. Founder of a candle business during the pandemic, Amy now presides over a hybrid business that took her to Shoppe Object in New York earlier this month as part of the BATF Pavilion. Turn to pages 48-49. On the supplier side, read the strong views of leading gift and home companies who are quite rightly up in arms about the government’s proposed review of antidumping duties. Turn to pages 25-27. They can only hope that government body, the TRA, will listen to them. Despite the inevitable challenges, it’s been a strong year for many businesses. Lesser & Pavey’s Julian Hunt and Jonny Greves reveal the company’s newest launches for Autumn/Winter - turn to pages 40-41 - while soft toys are continuing to gain ground, with our insightful plush article revealing the trends to look out for. Turn to pages 43-45. Also in this issue, Gemma Sault, managing director of the Home & Gift Association

(HGA) looks back on her first 12 months in the hot seat – turn to pages 58-59 - while our columnist, Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester, highlights the giftware that caught his eye at Harrogate Home & Gift. Turn to page 29. For those of you heading off to Autumn Fair (NEC, 6-9 September and Glee, 8-10 September), turn to pages 9 and 51 for everything you need to know about the shows. As for Top Drawer, taking place at London’s Olympia from September 13-15, turn to pages 11 and 61 to discover the many highlights. As always, the PG&H team are looking forward to putting their best foot forward as they head off to the September shows, as well as to Brand Licensing Europe (BLE) in October. Turn to page 17, and to our Licensed Giftware article on pages 67-69 where you’ll discover what’s ‘brands new’. But first, turn to pages 9-17 for all the latest, most up-to-the-minute industry news. Enjoy reading the issue, and looking forward to seeing you at all the upcoming shows!

Spring & Autumn Fair Launch National Campaign Parliamentary Petition Calls For Minimum 90 Minutes’ Free Parking
Spring & Autumn Fair have launched a new national campaign calling for a minimum of 90 minutes’ free parking in town and city centres across England, following new research revealing that retailers and consumers support the measure. The campaign, ‘Support Free Parking. Back Local Businesses. Bring People Back’, is centred on a Parliamentary petition calling on local authorities to consider parking as part of wider strategies to increase footfall, support independent businesses and strengthen local economies. It draws on findings from Voices of Retail, Spring & Autumn Fair’s annual research programme, produced in partnership with Faire. The research found that 38% of independent retailers believe free parking would have the greatest positive impact on their business, while

63% of consumers say it would encourage them to visit town and city centres more often. The campaign is calling for a law requiring all local authorities in England to provide a minimum of 90 minutes’ free parking in town and city centres, as well as greater recognition of parking within town centre regeneration and local economic growth strategies. Retailers are being invited to support the campaign through a Retailer Toolkit containing window posters, QR-code till stickers, social media graphics and other digital assets. Trade associations, suppliers, local business groups and industry organisations are also being encouraged to support the petition. The Parliamentary petition is live, with retailers, consumers, suppliers, trade bodies, local authorities and communities invited to sign and share it. To sign the petition, visit petition.parliament.uk/petitions/772686. To request the retailer campaign pack, email: visitor@autumnfair.com. Spicing Things Up When Spice Kitchen was founded some 14 years ago by mother and son Shashi and Sanjay Aggarwal, little did they think that they would be among the entrepreneurs pitching to five Dragons - Peter Jones, Deborah Above: Spice Kitchen’s Shashi and Meaden, Steven Sanjay Aggarwal in the Dragons’ Den. Bartlett, Susan Ma and Jenna Meek - on Dragons’ Den one day. Although they didn’t receive investment from the Dragons, Shashi commented: "We're absolutely delighted to have had the opportunity to face this together. It was a very special experience for our family and one we'll always treasure." Adds Sanjay: "Standing as the lift doors opened alongside my mum is something I'll never forget. Spice Kitchen has always been about mum, her knowledge and her phenomenal spice cookery. She has always shown me that it's never too late to try something new, keep learning or take a leap of faith. I hope people watching at home can see that too." Inspired by Shashi's Indian heritage and a lifelong passion for sharing spices, recipes and stories around the kitchen table, the gift-led business has grown from a small family venture into an internationally recognised brand, with Shashi believed to be among the oldest entrepreneurs ever to take part in the programme. HGA Writes To PM Andy Burnham Gift Industry Needs Targeted Government Support The Home & Gift Association, (HGA), recently sent a letter to PM Andy Burnham calling for targeted Government support to help independent retailers, suppliers, wholesalers and manufacturers to continue to drive economic growth, job creation and vibrant high streets across the UK. The letter was sent by managing director, Gemma Sault, with the Association highlighting the significant contribution made by the UK's home, gift and stationery sector. She outlined a series of policy recommendations designed to strengthen independent businesses and unlock future growth. The call comes as businesses across the supply chain face increasing pressures from rising employment costs, business rates, energy costs and growing competition from overseas online marketplaces. Explained Gemma: "Our industry is a major contributor to the UK economy, generating £billions in economic value and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs. Yet many businesses are facing increasing financial pressures that are limiting their ability to invest, recruit and grow. “Independent retailers and suppliers are the lifeblood of our high streets and communities. entrepreneurship and bring character to towns and cities across the UK. We believe the sector can play an even greater role in delivering economic growth, but only if businesses are given the support and confidence they need to invest in the future." The Association is also encouraging the Government to take further steps to champion British brands, independent retailers and UKmade products, recognising the important role they play in driving economic resilience and maintaining thriving town centres. As businesses continue to embrace digital transformation, sustainability initiatives and new routes to market, the HGA believes the sector is well positioned to support the Government's ambitions for economic growth, productivity and regeneration.

Collectively, industries represented by the Federation contribute more than £70 billion in GVA and support over one million jobs across the UK economy.

Scenting Success Scent, sound and store design are driving footfall, dwell time and basket spend on the high street according to new research. According to the findings, independent retailers could be missing out on over £1,000 a year in extra customer spend by overlooking the senses. The research suggests the perfect in-store experience is a highlycurated, multi-sensory approach, including warming scents, soft ambient lighting and the right playlist. The new data, commissioned by online marketplace Faire, is backed by a range of independent experts spanning consumer psychology, scent design and retail behaviour. Above: Charlotte Broadbent, Faire’s UK general manager. Charlotte Broadbent, UK general manager at Faire, commented: “This research shows what a difference small details can make to their bottom line. It's the kind of investment big chains simply aren't set up for, or agile enough to act on quickly. Independents can curate, adapt and experiment with scent, sound and layout in a way larger retailers can't, and that is a real point of difference. It doesn't take a big budget, just a clear understanding of what makes customers want to linger, browse and come back."
Highworth Emporium Celebrates Ten Years Corks were popping at gift shop Highworth Emporium in Highworth on 7 August, as owner Aga Marsden and the team celebrated the shop’s tenth anniversary with a party for customers. Goodie bag gifts were generously donated by the shop’s many suppliers. “Our mayor, Julie Murphy, joined us and said a few really wonderful words, which made the occasion even more special. It was lovely to celebrate with so many of our customers, friends and people who have been part of our journey over the years,” Aga told PG&H. Ten years on, and with a clutch of Greats and Retas awards in her trophy cabinet, Aga admits: “I took a leap of faith in opening the shop as, although I had worked in the gift industry for many years on the supplier side, when I bought the shop in August 2016 I had no gift retail experience whatsoever. This was the first shop I looked at and, straightaway, I felt it was my destiny.” Above: Aga Marsden, second left, with her team. Mayor Julie Murphy is third on the left.

In The Christmas Spirit Harrogate Christmas & Gift Reveals What’s Trending
Above: Among the festive gifts at Harrogate Christmas & Gift.
Harrogate Christmas & Gift will be returning to the Harrogate Convention Centre from 10-13 January 2027, giving buyers a headstart on Christmas and gifting trends. “Today's consumers continue to seek products that offer personality, value and a sense of occasion,” comments show organiser Simon Anslow. “Retailers are therefore increasingly looking for ranges that work across multiple categories from gifts, home décor and stationery to fashion accessories, greetings, food gifting and
seasonal merchandise - with the show bringing all of these areas together under one roof, making it easier to build cohesive product selections that encourage repeat visits and impulse purchases.” Once again, there will be a strong mix of established brands, specialist suppliers and new exhibitors. Among them will be Lesser & Pavey, Joe Davies, Gisela Graham, Widdop & Co., Floralsilk, and Namaste, with Puckator among the companies making their debut at the show. “While Christmas remains at the heart of the exhibition, many exhibitors showcase collections with year-round appeal, allowing retailers to source products that generate sales long after the decorations have been packed away,” points out Simon. “From home fragrance and wellness gifts to stationery, home accessories and contemporary giftware, buyers will discover ranges that complement their core offer and help differentiate their stores.” Visit www.harrogatefair.com or contact Simon Anslow e: simon@harrogatefair.com

FEEDBACK: RETAILER ROUND TABLE
Leading independent gift retailers took time out of their busy schedules at Harrogate’s Home & Gift show in July to talk shop at PG&H’s annual retailer round table.
Shooting The Breeze T
his year’s PG&H Retailer Round Table was perhaps the hardest hitting yet, with “tough” the word that cropped up again and again. Strong opinions were voiced, with participants very much in agreement, pointing to a government that isn’t helping retailers to prosper. An increase in business rates, an increase in labour costs and an increase in National Insurance, has added to the financial pressures this year, with the cost of living crisis, and constant talk from government around increasing taxation, seeing consumers rein in their spend. “The first half of this year was really quiet,” stated Brocante’s David Lorimer. “We’re based in Devon and Cornwall, so trade is seasonal with our busiest time of the year during the summer months. It was very wet at the start of the year, and where we normally get weekend trade, unfortunately, people weren’t prepared to drive from wet to wet, so the first half of the year felt extremely tough.” Henry & Co’s Mark Rees added that trade across his stores was down by about half a percent in the first six months of 2026, with the company currently trading flat. “However, it’s helped that we sell ice cream now, which has obviously been a boost in the heatwaves. But the reality is that customer numbers are down. People aren’t spending.” Celebration’s Sonya Haandrikman-Sibbald and Tanya Haandrikman, described business as being steady this year. “However, looking at the Spring Seasons, Valentine’s Day isn’t

buildings. Given business rates, and all the other things that we, as retailers, have to l Jane Ahrens, owner, Montague Dove, Reigate contend with, the demands are intense. It’s (a gift shop within the Reigate Pop Up collective) very tough out there, not helped by the fact l Clare and Hannah Bishop, co-owners, that it’s difficult to ascertain the highs and Cornucopia, Worcester l Sonya Haandrikman Sibbald and Tanya the lows each week. Business could be up or Haandrikman, co-owners, Celebrations, Carlisle down, and we no longer know which days of (which includes a café) the week are going to be the busy ones.” l David Lorimer, co-owner of Brocante (9 coastal shops in Devon and Cornwall) Cornucopia’s Clare Bishop highlighted the l Bill Nettelfield, owner, Bill & Bert’s, Colchester l Mark Rees, owner, Henry & Co (8 stores around impact of having such a small gap between the Midlands extending to Lancashire; founder of Mother’s Day and Easter. the Henry & Co home fragrance brand) “Having an early Easter this year didn’t help Chair: Sue Marks, editor, Progressive Gifts & at all businesswise,” she stated, while Home/GiftsandHome.net Hannah Bishop said the media didn’t help what it used to be,” said Sonya. “Fortunately, retailers during the heatwaves by focusing Mother’s Day was alright and, surprisingly, on stories about schools, businesses and Easter did very well for us this year.” Added other organisations shutting down. “Our Tanya, “People seemed to be doing more to decorate their homes for the occasion.” She continued: “What we’re noticing this year is that there aren’t as many people out on the high street, which is a worry. We’re also seeing an increase in vacant (in alphabetical order)

experience was that once people became acclimatised to the heat, they carried on going out and doing things as normal, including shopping.” Bill & Bert’s’ Bill Nettelfield echoed the feelings of the other round tablers. “There was a real lack of enthusiasm at the start of the year. It was very tough and the wet weather didn’t help,” he concurred. “Meanwhile, it was so hot during the Whitsun half term break that people stayed away from the shops, preferring to drive to the coast instead, which meant that we hardly did any business at all. Added to which, throughout the year, the government said that they were going to increase taxation, their way of telling people to hold onto their money. However, Mother’s Day, as always, was good for us because mums always come first. Percentage wise, we were up by 10% in June, with July going through the roof, seeing us 40-50% up. Nevertheless, we’ll still be down over the year,” he predicted.
In contrast to the rest of the round tablers, Jane Ahrens said that she had had a busy start to the year, but a quieter summer. “Retail today is very, very unpredictable,” agreed Tanya. “At one time you could make predictions but it’s impossible now. It’s difficult to determine what each day, each week will be like, and for us, with a café as well as a gift and card store, that impacts on staffing too. We don’t want to pay people for standing around doing nothing.” “Because the Lake District has so much rain, Sonya pointed out, when the sun comes out, people head out for the day or sit in their gardens, again impacting on high street footfall.” As for the new PM, Andy Burnham, delivering his pledge to cut business rates, David commented: “I’d love the government to help with rates, but speaking about them and doing something about them are two different things.” (Since the Retailer Round Table in mid-July, the PM has cut rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues, but, predictably, not for retailers). Henry & Co’s Mark Rees highlighted that another problem created by the government has been the rise in the living wage. “It’s pushing people into a higher income tax bracket, not to make people’s lives better, but because it’s a brilliant stealth tax,” he pointed out. “The knock-on effect is that it’s impacting on consumer spending.” Emphasised Tanya: “I’ve got no confidence in this government because they haven’t done business any good whatsoever. They squeeze us from every angle wanting short term gain rather than long term prosperity. They’re not looking at the long term, and I think that there will be a lot of businesses that will go under. All the government wants to do is take, take, take until there’s nothing left. People will find it difficult to build on their businesses to thrive and prosper.” PROGRESSIVE

Sonya added: “Instead of the council spending money on fancy pavements for Carlisle high street they should have spent it on encouraging people to come to the high street and shop. We need a variety of good stores that will encourage people to get into their cars and drive into Carlisle.” With so few incentives for businesses, Mark admitted: “last year, I seemed to spend my whole time looking at how to mitigate cost pressure, to include cutting hours in store and trying to work with suppliers, although that’s hard too, because they’re being squeezed as well. It’s taken the wind out of my sails. I want to continue to be entrepreneurial and forward thinking, but I’m now considering diversifying into another business. There’s no incentive and the tax take is huge. It’s pushing people into doing things that they might not otherwise have done because they no longer want to take the risks.” David added that while there was nothing that could be done about external factors, looking inwards, many suppliers are now selling directly to consumers, therefore competing with their retail customers. “Additionally, because so many retailers are buying product on Faire, there’s no geographical product exclusivity. The shop next door could easily be selling the same items as us. There’s a loss of control.” Bill predicted that, while they’re still profitable, a lot of independent retailers will

FEEDBACK: RETAILER ROUND TABLE close in the next two or three years. “They might think it’s best to get out while they’re still making money rather than simply going on and on.” As for the Autumn Budget, Bill suggested that the Chancellor should give any new British businesses opening in the high street 12 months rates free as an incentive for a non-vape or non-barber shop. In line with the other round tablers, he said that the government needed to make it an incentive to work rather than not to work, with everyone agreeing that being on benefits had now become a lifestyle choice rather than a necessity, impacting on employing staff who can earn more by not working, with some playing the system. As for parking, it continues to be a bone of contention. “Car parking is the most important thing for any town,” stated Bill. “£5 a day is the maximum it should be,” he suggested, while Tanya said that local councils should give people a two to three hour grace period for free. As Mark pointed out: “The car parking debate has been going on for years and, as we all know, car parking issues are a barrier to doing business.” As for shoplifting, Sonya says it’s a major problem for Celebrations. “We feel let down by the police and the lack of support. I’ve chased shoplifters down the high street and brought them back into the store along with the products that they’ve stolen.” Bill too, has chased after thieves and now has seven people in the store during the week, and nine at the weekends. “However, every week, I have to stand on some 11-17 year old’s foot and ask them to put the item they’re stealing back onto the shelf,” he highlighted. At Brocante it’s the opposite. “It tends to be middle-aged women who steal the top of the salt and pepper pots. It’s not about the money, we want the items back!” Clare said that this time last year, shoplifting was rife at Cornucopia. “We were a target, so we posted details on social media and the posts went viral, with thieves bringing the product back the next day and asking us to take the posts down. However, we refused and now state that clearly in the window. We want shoplifters to know that we mean business.” On the product front, and with regards to
Christmas sourcing, the feeling was that anything squishy is going to ring up sales. “I’ve bought into foodie themed items, plushies and Needoh fidget sensory toys,” confirmed Mark, a brand heavily stocked by Bill too, who is also doing more with Talking Tables, especially in relation to the company’s games. Hannah and Clare meanwhile, are investing in more stocking fillers. As for the products that won’t make the cut this year, Christmas-themed gifts won’t be on her list, said Jane, who mainly sources from small UK designer/makers, while Hannah and Clare will be sourcing fewer home fragrance products with Christmassy fragrances. “I won’t be buying into gonks this year as I think our customers are all gonked out,” added Bill. As for what’s trending, Hannah and Clare highlighted “anything with a face, anything that’s crocheted, and positive affirmations,” while Sonya confirmed that she has ordered a bespoke, eye-catching wall of pebble people art from La De Da! Added Tanya, “on a positive note, a category we’re doing well with is plush. Plus, with Autumn becoming a more important occasion in the UK, we’re starting to do more on the homewares side where we’ve seen growth and, naturally, any growth is a positive.” Hannah and Clare agreed. “Plus, if you have a good Halloween display, people will buy into it,” emphasised Hannah, “with social media helping to drive the trend.” While all the major trade shows are still leading the way for sourcing, to include Harrogate Christmas & Gift, online wholesale platform Faire was also mentioned as a route to market. “If I type something I’m interested in into Faire I know it will give me a wide array of products that I wouldn’t have thought of myself,” said David. Given so many factors at play, were the round tablers feeling optimistic about the fourth quarter? “I’m relatively optimistic because, as a small retailer, I can PROGRESSIVE

easily pivot,” said Jane. “We had a good Christmas last year so yes, we are feeling optimistic,” agreed Hannah and Clare, with Tanya and Sonya looking forward to seeing the products they’ve ordered for the festive season hopefully flying out of the store. “Given the current climate I’d be happy to do what we did last Christmas,” said Bill. “It was a good one.”

INDUSTRY ISSUE: ANTI-DUMPING DUTY
H
One Voice Retail Prices Will Increase Significantly “The TRA interim review of anti-dumping rates on tableware ceramics is a cause of some concern, and it does seem that the UK is intent on following the lead provided by Europe where, on February 7 this year, the European Commission changed the antidumping duty (ADD) rate on Chinese originated tableware ceramics from 17.9% / 36%, to 79%,” states Mark Howard, managing director of Puckator. “The rationale behind this was that between 2023 and 2025 the volume of Chinese ceramic tableware imports into Europe had increased by 22% while average import prices had fallen significantly over the same period. “However, these conclusions are highly questionable, as operating costs for ceramics producers in China have increased substantially over the last few years (labour and energy costs in particular) and, added to this, is the cancellation of the export subsidy on ceramics in April 2026.” Continues Mark: “In view of this, it is inconceivable that import prices have fallen significantly and, at Puckator over recent years,

Government body the Trade Remedies Authority, (TRA), has announced that it will be reviewing the anti-dumping duty that is levied on ceramic tableware and kitchenware manufactured in China, provoking an uproar from companies in the gift and home industry. we have seen strong upwards pressure on purchase prices from Chinese producers. Also, again looking at Europe, which accounts for over 60% of Puckator’s sales, it is highly questionable what the increase in ADD is actually trying to achieve. “Europe-wide, some 30,000 people are employed in the production of tableware

Commission’s policy is a widespread increase in retail prices for tableware ceramics. “Similarly in the UK, the TRA review is to assess and potentially hike the ADD rate on tableware ceramics of Chinese origin but, in reality, this will be to very little effect, other than to increase retail prices. In the UK, around 20,000 people are employed by the

ceramics, but the vast majority of this is highend ceramics and is non-competitive with the more mass-market Chinese ceramics. ceramics industry, but most of this is for high-end ceramics, and non-tableware related, such as ceramics for aerospace, defence, and medical applications.” Adds Mark: “High-end craft producers also remain, but it is highly unlikely that these producers would be able to, or want to, scale up production to mass produced tableware as provided for by Chinese imports. “Assuming that the TRA follows Europe’s

lead, it is difficult to see that any significant benefits will result for domestic producers, but it is certain that retail prices will increase significantly as a consequence. For UK producers, it is high energy costs and labour costs which are more of an issue than indirect competition from Chinese produced tableware. “At Puckator, for our European sales, we have had to reduce our sales of tableware ceramics since the hike in ADD, and similarly, should the TRA impose a similar hike in the ADD rate, then we will also have to scale back ceramics tableware sales in UK. “From a group perspective, although ceramics has been an important product area for us, it is one which can be replaced by other product groups over a relatively short period of time without significant detriment to our overall sales performance. “Nonetheless, we are also actively looking at sourcing from other regions such as Turkey, Vietnam and Indonesia although, with China being such a key supplier of tableware ceramics worldwide, it is questionable how effective alternative sources of supply can be in reality.”
Unintended Consequences “We fully support fair trade and action where overseas manufacturers are competing unfairly with the UK industry,” states Paul Hooker, managing director, Joe Davies. “However, we believe this review risks creating significant unintended consequences for the UK giftware sector because it does not distinguish between mass-produced commodity ceramics and the design-led giftware that many of our industry supplies.” Explains Paul: “The same commodity codes cover everything from cartons of plain white catering mugs and dinner services through to beautifully giftpackaged mugs featuring the work of UK artists, licensed brands and original designs. They may share the same ceramic base, but they serve Right: Paul Hooker, managing director of Joe Davies.
completely different commercial markets and are purchased for entirely different reasons. “Much of the value in these products is created here in the UK through design, licensing, artwork, branding and distribution. The ceramic manufacturing process is only one part of the value chain. Increasing anti-dumping duties on these products risks raising costs throughout the supply chain, adding further inflationary pressure for wholesalers, independent retailers and consumers, without encouraging a

The UK Government’s review of the anti-dumping duty that is levied on ceramic tableware and kitchenware imported from China is totally unjustified.
meaningful shift to UK manufacturing for these specialist gift products.” He continues: “There is also a significant export issue. The EU already applies antidumping duties of up to 79% on many of the same products. UK businesses without bonded warehouses, exporting to Ireland and the wider European market therefore face additional costs when goods are imported into the UK and then exported into the EU, making British wholesalers increasingly uncompetitive overseas at a time when export growth should be encouraged. “This is an issue that extends far beyond individual importers. It affects UK designers, licensors, wholesalers, exporters and thousands of independent retailers. We hope the Trade Remedies Authority recognises the important distinction between commodity ceramics and design-led giftware as the review progresses.”
Totally Unjustified “We believe the UK Government’s review of the anti-dumping duty that is levied on ceramic tableware and kitchenware imported from China to be totally unjustified,” emphasises Julian Hunt, managing director of Lesser & Pavey. “The current level of up to 36.1% is PROGRESSIVE

already far more than adequate to protect what is left of the manufacturing base in the UK. There is very little manufacturing left in the UK and many of the so called ‘manufacturers’ are only decorating products and rely very heavily on imports of blankware from China.” Explains Julian: “The assertion made by the TRA that prices from China have decreased by up to 35% in recent years is, we believe, simply not true. Since 2024, the Chinese government has reduced the tax rebates on exports from 13% down to 9% and then, as of 1 April 2026, down to 0%. This has resulted in significant price increases that have been passed onto their customers everywhere in the world. “In addition, Chinese manufacturers have been faced with huge increases in electricity, gas, raw materials and wages which have led to additional price increases. Any further increases in duty will result in significant price rises that could lead to job losses across the supply chain and, at retail, could, at worst, double current retail prices. “We therefore hope that anyone involved in this sector has registered and presented a strong argument against these proposed measures. In addition to this, we would urge them to write to their local MP, to Jonathan Reynolds MP Secretary of State for Business, Liam Byrne, MP Chair of Business and Trade Select Committee and to anyone else they know of who could help with this matter.”

Additional Financial Burden "We believe the proposed increase in Additional Duty (ADD) is both unnecessary and unjustified,” says Kate Winch, head of sales at Candlelight. “Having recently visited our tableware manufacturing partners alongside our China office, we have seen no evidence to suggest products are being sold below cost or unfairly dumped into the UK market. “The existing ADD already represents a significant cost, and any further increase would simply place an additional financial burden on UK importers and, ultimately, consumers. “At a time when the Government continues to emphasise the importance of addressing the cost of living, introducing further duties would have the opposite effect by driving up prices across the sector.” Adds Kate: “As the UK is no longer part of the European Union, we also believe there is a strong case for establishing an independent trade policy that reflects the needs of UK businesses and consumers, rather than automatically aligning with EU trade measures."
ADD Should Be Scrapped “This is just a tax grab without any justification, punishing an industry that is already struggling with rising energy costs,” comments Paul Travis, sales and marketing director at CD Heritage. “The government did announce help with energy costs for the ceramic industry but there’s still no detail and timing. “The dumping duty was introduced to protect UK manufacturing. Despite this, large companies like Wedgwood & Royal Doulton source overseas. “Many businesses, including Ceramic

Damaging To Sales “I would strongly advise the TRA against any rise to the existing anti-dumping duty, especially given our experience that the cost of ceramic goods has already gone up in recent times,” points out Scott Clarke, head of operations and sales at Rex London. “Further duties, if they are anything like as extreme as the EU has already implemented, will inevitably end up being passed on to consumers, damaging sales for us as importers, but also, more importantly, all the retailers who are already operating in a really tough trading environment. At the same time, it’s hard to see it how it would provide any meaningful boost to domestic manufacturing whose challenges extend far beyond competition from imports.” PROGRESSIVE

“While we understand the need to protect UK manufacturing, any further increase in anti-dumping duties could place significant pressure on pricing, product development and the breadth of ceramic ranges available to consumers,” says Pritesh Amin, creative director at Gift Republic. “We hope the TRA reaches a balanced outcome that supports domestic producers without unnecessarily disrupting established supply chains.”
Impact On Consumers “Any increase by the TRA of anti-dumping duties is unlikely to prevent mid-market companies from continuing to source ceramics from China, but it will definitely impact the end price consumers will be asked to pay,” says Mark Jones, commercial director at Gisela Graham. “Sadly, none of these duties will have a meaningful, positive impact on the UK’s own home-grown ceramics manufacturing industry.”

Following an enjoyable routine of ‘work, drink, food, more drink, bed, repeat’ at Harrogate Home & Gift in July, PG&H’s columnist, Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester, reveals some of the giftware that caught his eye at the show.

Bülow tasted out of this world. I think we were the company’s first order before 10am on the Sunday. Having tasted them, it was a no brainer to place an order, and I’m convinced that these will fly out in the last quarter. The packaging is so important with food gifting, and the Danish influence really shows. Elsewhere, Steepletone had some great new products as they usually do, the best of which I thought were the new Drumbeat speakers. We also opened an account with Boxer (we should have done this years ago). The delivery arrived in August as requested, and we started selling as soon as we put the stock out. Great service from the company too, and I’m still kicking myself for not doing this before. With Autumn Fair and Top Drawer coming up in September, this is the last opportunity for any extra ideas for those all-important last few month of the year. Before you know it, Halloween and Christmas displays will be in the shops - minus gonks this year at Bill and Bert’s as I think we have been gonked out for the last few years! And finally, with the World Cup having come and gone, we’re now back to the football season all over again. Here’s hoping for another successful season for the mighty Leeds United! MOT. ON WITH THE SHOW
ell, it’s not often we can moan about the sunshine in the good old UK, but it’s certainly been a warm summer. Fortunately, it’s gone on long enough in that it seems as if everyone has got used to the heat and has carried on shopping. Here in Colchester, we have had many more tourists, both from home and abroad, and this has helped with sales across June, July and August. Thankfully, after a slow start to the year, sales have really picked up and are trading well above 2025. Hopefully, everyone else is finding a similar pick-up. It’s been a few weeks now since the Harrogate Home & Gift fair which is still the most sociable show of the year. Even though exhibitor numbers were down, there were plenty of great stands at the show which all seemed to be doing well. It’s great to see and chat with both sides of the trade in such a nice environment. There’s nothing like parking your car, walking from your hotel into the exhibition halls, having lunch outside and, when the day is done, walking to the pub. You can very quickly get into a routine of work, drink, food, more drink, bed, repeat. While sitting on the benches having lunch outside on the Monday of the show, we got chatting to a lovely couple who had their own shop. They were asking who some of our best suppliers were and we told them to go and visit La De Da and order some pebble pictures, which I believe they did. La De Da is one of the nicest, most helpful accounts we deal with. Nothing is ever too much trouble. One year, I asked if the company would do football pebble picture for us. I gave them a list of around 20 teams along with all the colours for the scarves. On our next delivery, this great range of football teams arrived. On every repeat order of their normal stock, we repeat on the football ones as well so, if you have room in your shop, I would highly recommend giving this wonderful company a go. As long as, when we put our orders in, we still stay top of the queue! On the foodie side of the orders we placed at Home & Gift, the amazing liquorice product from Lakrids by

Growing Smarter With some 57 retail outlets in the UK, MenKind is a unique specialty UK gift and gadget retailer focusing on tech, licensed pop-culture merchandise and novelty items. Owned and operated by Gift Universe, the Group recently reported record turnover and profits, at the same time fanfaring an ambitious store expansion programme. So, what have been the biggest drivers behind the company’s growth and how has the business changed? PG&H put Paul Kraftman, founder and chairman of Gift Universe, and Gift Universe’s managing director, Gary Wakeman, into the hot seat.

tuck for a gift for a male friend or relative? Then look no further than MenKind. Founded in 2002 by Paul Kraftman, the company is part of the Gift Universe Group, alongside other brands that include wholesale supplier The Source. In recent years, the company has transitioned to employee ownership and is majority-owned by an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) for the benefit of its staff, with Paul as executive chairman. “Becoming an EOT three years ago was a pivotal step, and our results are a testament to the efficacy of the

employee-owned model,” states Paul. “Achieving our highest-ever turnover and profit demonstrates the strength of our brands, our strategy and, most importantly, our people. Every channel in the business outperformed the previous year in both revenue and profitability, showing that we’re not just growing, but growing smarter. This performance is a direct reflection of the dedication, energy and expertise of our colleagues across every area of the Group.” While MenKind’s historical strength has been rooted in seasonal gifting and novelty gadgets, a strategic evolution, under managing director Gary Wakeman, has successfully repositioned the brand into a major, year-round retail destination. This shift has been heavily driven by the rapidly expanding collectables and kidult market. Explains Gary: “The kidult category has fundamentally shaped our modern DNA. This shift yields a much higher average transaction value through high quality figurines, collectables and trending products. Crucially, it is significantly enhancing our revenues outside of the traditional Christmas peak trading period.” He continues: “Nevertheless, while the proposition has continuously evolved, MenKind has remained true to its core PROGRESSIVE

values, specialising in the unexpected, with a unique range where our customers can discover something new every day. Plus, the growth of social media trends, and the importance of exclusive ranges, has a bigger influence than ever on our buying strategy as we continue to ensure MenKind offers our customers something different to the rest of the high street.” Despite the many external factors impacting on retailers this year – labour costs, business rates, shoplifting, the war in Iran and sizzling, record-breaking temperatures – Gary’s response is refreshingly upbeat in terms of their impact on the Group. “We’ve enjoyed a strong first four months of our financial year, with sales ahead of last year across all retail, digital and wholesale channels. While in some years hot weather may have had a more challenging impact on sales, this summer we have seen the reverse, with a strong performance driven by sales of fans, summer ranges and trend products,” he confirms. “A strong performance for Father’s Day in June also gives us some confidence in our gifting proposition as we head towards Q4. The continued conflict in Iran has led to increased freight costs, which we are anticipating continuing for the rest of the year and impacting margins. However, currently, we are not expecting this to lead to increased selling prices.” Defining the gifting side of the business and the product categories that come within the remit, he points out: “Ultimately, we see all categories as gifting opportunities, with a curated range that our customers can either

RETAILER FACE TO FACE: MENKIND buy to gift someone else or treat themselves to. Throughout the year, there is a shift in terms of the proportion of sales each category contributes, and for key gifting occasions our key categories, both in MenKind and The Source Wholesale, are Gadgets, Fun & Toys, Impulse, Health & Fitness and Games. Many of the categories that performed particularly well over Father's Day featured new product launches, highlighting the appetite for innovation. While value and quality remain key purchasing drivers, it's less about the price tag and more about the lasting value of the gift. “Over the past few years, we've also seen a significant shift away from novelty gifting towards gifts with genuine purpose and practicality, and we've evolved our ranges across every price point to reflect that change. We work with a broad network of suppliers across the UK and overseas, which plays a key role in keeping our product proposition unique and differentiated. Many of our UK gifting suppliers have been trusted partners for years, consistently helping us to bring fresh, innovative products to market. Longstanding relationships with businesses such as Boxer Gifts, Gift Republic, Paladone and Coach House Partners have been instrumental in building the distinctive range our customers have come to expect from Menkind." Licensed product accounts for some 40% of sales across the business, with Gary confirming that licensed ranges have been an important driver of growth, not only within MenKind but also across The Source, with exclusive partnerships such as Minecraft and Pac-Man proving particularly successful. As for what gives MenKind the edge as a gift multiple, Gary says that being agile is incredibly important. “We're constantly refreshing our ranges to ensure we're offering the latest trending products, ideally before anyone else. Because we don't have lengthy approval processes, we're able to move quickly when new opportunities arise, even if a product is presented to us at the busiest time of year. That speed means we can bring new launches to market rapidly alongside our supplier partners, meeting our customers' expectations for constant newness while giving suppliers the opportunity to test exciting concepts with us ahead of the wider market."
Inset: A peek in-store. Below: A Harry Potter Gryffindor holdall. Bottom: A key movie release this year is Toy Story 5 which is helping to drive sales.
So far this year, he says that MenKind’s biggest growth gifting categories have been Gadgets, Collectables, Impulse and Construction Toys. “We have hundreds more lines coming this year to expand them across all channels, as well as newness to drive categories where growth is smaller.” With Christmas by far MenKind’s biggest trading event of the year, the company will be offering its largest-ever gifting range both in-store and online. “Our full Christmas launch will take place after the October half-term, with festive window displays and curated gift collections taking centre stage in the front third of every store. Online, customers will be able to browse more than 2,000 products through easy-tonavigate gift categories, while our Christmas campaign will begin even earlier digitally.” He highlights that Advent calendars will be a major focus from early September. “It’s a category we're expecting to perform strongly this year, with sales already underway.” As for the challenges going into 2027, Gary comments that the ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East continues to put pressure on global freight costs. “We expect this to have an impact on margins in the second half of the year, with the potential for those challenges to continue beyond that. Closer to home, it will also be interesting to see whether Andy Burnham introduces any policy changes that could help address some PROGRESSIVE

of the pressures the retail sector has faced over the past couple of years." Opportunities meanwhile, follow the Group’s period of exceptional growth, with MenKind entering an ambitious new phase of expansion across its physical retail estate. “We're rolling out a multi-phase programme to open more stores on long-term leases, significantly increasing our permanent presence across the UK and bringing the MenKind experience to more prime retail destinations,” Gary states. “It's one of the most ambitious store expansion programmes currently being undertaken by a UK specialist retailer, and we're actively seeking opportunities in major cities, shopping centres, high streets and retail parks nationwide.” Adds Paul: “Our core bricks-and-mortar operations continue to experience fantastic momentum, so transitioning from flexible occupation to permanent leases allows us to invest more heavily in our stores, creating long-term value for both our business and our landlord partners. We’ll be opening new stores in Staines, Huddersfield and Norwich and more announcements will be announced soon. We’ve reached a point where our confidence in physical retail has never been stronger.”

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . CHRISTMAS WINDOW DISPLAYS
According to the lyrics, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year”. So how will gift shops being making the most of Christmas 2026 when it comes to their windows and in-store displays? PG&H asked Michael Apter, owner of four Paper Tiger stores in Edinburgh, winner of The Greats 2026 Best Display category, along with two Display finalists – Cornucopia in Worcester and Attico in Westbourne – what’s going to be stopping passers-by in their tracks, encouraging them to push open the door.
Christmas Present THE GREATS DISPLAY CATEGORY: WINNER 2026 PAPER TIGER, EDINBURGH (4 stores) What’s your planning timeline for Christmas? “We start looking at themes up to 15 months in advance at Autumn trade shows, as well as by reviewing customer reception and sales impact from the previous year,” explains Paper Tiger’s owner, Michael Apter. “Following Spring Fair, core themes and supplier partnerships are finalised by the end of March.” Where do you get your inspiration from and ideas for themes? “We like to balance nostalgia with contemporary trends by featuring two distinct windows per store, one traditional and one modern. This year’s traditional theme is A Christmas Carol, featuring The Art File's Storybook card range. Inspiration struck when I saw that Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre was running A Christmas Carol for its festive show this year. We’re also collaborating on displays with key partners, such as Museums & Galleries and Talking Tables.” How are you approaching this year’s windows, both display/productwise? “Most of our shops have two windows to fill. We keep the core themes consistent across locations, with occasional minor tweaks based on store layouts or stock availability. We know our independent suppliers
get a real thrill out of seeing how creatively we bring their ranges to life, making the effort entirely worth it.” Do you source props or make your own? “While we occasionally source props, our main approach is using the imagery directly from our cards, stationery and giftwrap to build the visual narrative. Our VM colleague, Vicky, is very talented and has amassed a cupboard of 'useful display things' over the years. Visual merchandising is a labour of love for our team, so being recognised at The Greats awards this year in that category was a fantastic highlight.” How important is lighting? “Lighting is hugely important for setting the mood. We layer spotlights, coloured lighting, fairy/string lights and, occasionally, UV lighting to make the displays pop during dark winter evenings.” When will the big reveal be unveiled? “We introduce Autumnal displays with subtle festive hints in October, switching to full Christmas mode immediately after Halloween.” How do you convert footfall into store visits? “It’s Retail 101! Whatever theme is featured in the window

must be the first thing customers see when they walk through the door. We extend the window themes indoors using hanging displays above tables and wall units to guide shoppers into the store.” What’s your favourite ‘Christmas past’ anecdote? “I used to measure the impact of a window display based on the number of people who would literally break their stride and backtrack to look in the window. These days, one of my key measures is seeing people take selfies outside the shop!” Above: In the run-up to Christmas, bright lighting helps all four Paper Tiger stores to stand out on the high street.

THE GREATS DISPLAY CATEGORY FINALIST: ATTICO, WESTBOURNE Where do you get your inspiration from and ideas for themes? “The main theme was decided on Christmas Day 2025 when I opened a gift to find a beautiful antiquarian copy of Peter Pan,” states Cesca Haskins, owner of Attico in Westbourne. “This year, the three windows facing the main road will all be based around Peter Pan.” How are you approaching this year’s window, both display/productwise? “Our favourite thing about having the shop is creating the windows, with Christmas always the most exciting time of year for us. In fact, we can’t wait to get started! “It takes us ages to pull everything together. We have six windows altogether: one will be a Jellycat window, three will be Peter Panthemed, and the
remaining two will feature products. They’ll also have a literary theme, but we haven’t quite finalised those yet. “We hope that even if a window doesn’t contain much product, if it’s visually exciting and tells a story, it will fascinate people and, hopefully, entice them into the shop.” Do you source props or make your own? “We’ll be sourcing some props, but we also make a huge amount ourselves. We create all the backdrops, do the painting and build many of the display elements by hand. I’m incredibly lucky to have a very creative and talented team. We’re also fortunate that our windows are lit from both sides, as we installed the lighting when we first took over the shop.” When will the big reveal be unveiled? “The first Christmas window will probably be PROGRESSIVE

unveiled at the beginning of October, with the other three following in early November.” What’s your favourite ‘Christmas past’ anecdote? “Last year, three of our Christmas windows were themed around Westbourne, with vintage Barbie dolls featured throughout. One of them, however, kept falling over. We eventually decided she must have been drunk outside the post office because she spent most of her time lying flat on her back, and people only commented when she actually managed to stay standing!”

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . CHRISTMAS WINDOW DISPLAYS
THE GREATS DISPLAY CATEGORY FINALIST: CORNUCOPIA, WORCESTER What’s your planning timeline for Christmas? “We start planning our Christmas windows ridiculously early!” says Hannah Bishop, co-owner of Cornucopia in Worcester. “Usually, ideas are already being thrown around at the beginning of the year so that by Spring/Summer we're starting to properly think about the overall concept and how we can bring it to life. As a small independent, we have to plan quite far ahead, particularly if we're making props ourselves or need to source something very specific.” Where do you get your inspiration from and ideas for themes? “Our inspiration really can come from anywhere. We love that traditional, nostalgic feeling of Christmas, but we always try to give it a Cornucopia twist. We're constantly looking at interiors, fashion, colour trends, theatre sets, shop displays and even things we spot when we're travelling. Sometimes the tiniest detail sparks the whole idea. We never want to simply put Christmas stock in a window. For us, there has to be a story or a little bit of magic behind it.” How are you approaching this year’s windows, both display/productwise? “Our windows have become part of the tradition of Christmas for many of our customers. “We have five large windows to fill, which is both amazing and slightly terrifying at Christmas! They're such a huge part of our shop and people in Worcester genuinely wait to see what we're going to do. This year, we're approaching the windows in the same way that we always do - the display comes first and then the product has to feel naturally part of the story. We don't want it to look like we've just filled every available space with stock. We want people to stop, look properly and then notice all the little details. “Once the main display is installed, we constantly tweak it in the run-up. Product sells, new deliveries arrive and gaps appear, so the windows are never really 'finished'. We probably adjust them several times a week without even thinking about it.” Do you source props or make your own? “We make a huge amount of props ourselves. Mum and I are both very creative, plus I have an interior design background. We do source certain props, but we love handmade elements because it means the display is completely unique to Cornucopia and can't be recreated somewhere else.” How important is lighting? “So important! We always think about how the windows

look during the day and then again at night. There's something really lovely about seeing the shop glowing when Worcester is dark and the Christmas lights are on.” When will the big reveal be unveiled? “We're aiming to unveil our first Christmas window in early October. The transformation involves a very long day, a lot of coffee and us still moving things around long after we said we'd finished.” How do you convert footfall into an in-store visit? “We try to create windows that make people curious. We don't necessarily want them to see everything in one glance - we want them to spot something, look a little closer and wonder what else is inside. Our five windows almost act as the first chapter of the shop.” What’s your favourite ‘Christmas past’ anecdote? “During a particularly late night Christmas window installation we had truly lost the will to live! Taylor Swift was playing, so mum and I were singing and dancing around the shop - including some questionable dancing up and down the PROGRESSIVE

stepladders! When the song finished, we heard a huge round of applause. A group of builders, who were working in the shopping centre were watching us, cheering and clapping! We had absolutely no idea we'd had an audience!”

Following a re-branding of the company’s Desire Aroma range to Maison Parfum earlier this year, home fragrance is playing a key role in Lesser & Pavey’s gift offer, with a host of new products being unveiled for the coming season at Autumn Fair (6-9 September, NEC, Hall 7, stand C40 – D41) to include the introduction of striking new gift bags containing a trio of home fragrance products.

Following a significant investment this year, Maison Parfum has established itself as a standalone, affordable brand, combining value for money, contemporary design and eye-catching packaging that’s got shelfappeal, with many fragrances inspired by world famous iconic perfumes and aftershaves. “Each scent has a high fragrance concentration offering an excellent throw and longevity and, as always with L&P, quality at

The collection features over 500 items in a range of sizes, colours and fragrances – from 50ml diffuser sets through to 2L statement diffusers, with the 1L diffusers currently the best-selling size. Alongside diffusers, Maison Parfum also offers candles, candle and diffuser gift sets, as well as room sprays. “What makes Maison Parfum stand out in a competitive market place is that it’s such a broad range, making it easy for retailers to select products suited to the style of their store while supporting strong visual merchandising and encouraging repeat purchases,” continues Jonny. “Each piece has PROGRESSIVE

been designed to stand-out on the shelf, as well as in the home, featuring decorative, coloured vessels that make a statement while complementing all types of interiors. Plus, in addition to everyday, Maison Parfum colours and packaging also tie in with the seasons, Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer.” With the run up to the festive season in mind - and with a view to enhancing the giftgiving experience for retailers, gift-givers and recipients - brand new are 16 upmarket gift bags, each with high perceived value, and (removable) lifestyle hang tags. The high quality presentation bags are neatly tied with a gold ribbon, and inside each bag is a Maison Parfum diffuser, candle and room spray, available in 16 different fragrances, making the bags a gift that’s ready to give. “It’s easy gifting for every taste,” says Jonny. Looking ahead, for Spring/Summer 2027, the company is also introducing new packaging for its Maison Parfum diffusers and candles. There are six designs, all of which feature bold new floral graphics, designed by the in-house art department. “Customers who have visited our showroom during the summer and seen the designs are already placing orders for them which is very encouraging,” Jonny confirms. “The William Morris designs in particular have been runaway winners in the Maison Parfum range, popular in their own right and also complementing of our extensive ceramic collections.” Meanwhile, with over 1,000 brand new

With Christmas ranges continuing to sell out quickly – think super-sized fun, quirky, animated dancing Christmas plush, a singing, dancing Christmas tree, a Highland Cow, a capybara and a robin among them. Plus, there are Christmas jigsaw puzzles too, with Lesser & Pavey’s managing director, Julian Hunt, confirming that Christmas is continuing to be a growth sector, up more than 25% on last year. “We’ve introduced jigsaw puzzles for the first time and they’ve done exceptionally well,” he comments. “Many of them tie in with our other gift and homewares ranges from our established artists, adding to the wide variety of products available for our customers. Pick-up lines have also been popular including Christmas themed bath and body gift sets in attractive counter displays making them ideal stocking fillers.” Aside from Christmas, with Mother’s Day the second biggest gift giving occasion of the year, Julian says he’s confident that the company’s new floral diffusers and candles will be among the best sellers for both Mother’s Day and Spring/Summer 2027. “To complement these, we also have a fabulous range of bath and body products using matching artwork. Based on the feedback from the many customers who have visited our showroom over the past few weeks, we’re delighted with the reaction to these new launches and are looking forward to Autumn Fair where we will have even more new products on show.” These include new designs in the Lynsey Johnstone collection of hand-painted, decorative glassware - a true evergreen best seller for Lesser & Pavey. There are six new designs, with Julian pointing out the finer detail of the hand painting. “We’ve launched gin glasses, wine glasses, stemless glasses and handled glass cups suitable for both hot and cold drinks, with more new designs already in the pipeline for Spring/Summer 2027. People love adding to their collection, and while we look forward to including new designs each season, we continue to offer many of the original best-selling designs,” he points out. Also continuing to be very popular are the company’s extensive collection of Highland Cows. “We’ve got lots of new, fun designs,” says Jonny, “including one dressed as William Wallace, a new Tartan Piper, a gamer and one dressed as a darts player!” In ceramics, there are new William Morris patterns to include Daffodils and

Chrysanthemums, along with a new Pimpernel design all of which are complemented by matching home fragrance and bath and body gift sets. There are also new additions to the brightly coloured Tuscany ceramics collection, which have continued to be top selling products with stock in short supply. ”Our sales have been fantastic, often outstripping supply,” Julian highlights. “The moment unsold stocks land they are snapped up by enthusiastic customers.” Meanwhile, brand new are a range of colourful, velvet backed cushions with humorous sayings, such as ‘Just One More Episode’, ‘Reserved For The Cat’, ‘Welcome to The Mad House’, and ‘Please Leave By 9pm’. “These have been an instant hit with customers and we’re delighted with the sales so far,” states Julian. “We’ve also increased our range of jigsaws with more everyday designs and added a selection of kiddies jigsaws into our children’s range.” Also brand new is the Mediterranean-inspired Fruits De Mer ceramics collection for Spring/Summer 2027. “Plus, there are stained glass LED lights, novelty lamps and rechargeable touch lamps at extremely competitive prices, as well as men’s grooming giftware featuring soap, hair PROGRESSIVE

and body wash,” he continues. “We also have an original collection of coffee table storage boxes – a place to hide the remote control perhaps? - including one with an eye-catching fashion magazine cover.” So how optimistic are he and Jonny feeling about the all-important fourth quarter? “We’ve always been about quality, wellfinished, gift products at an affordable price,” says Jonny, “so we’re feeling very optimistic based on our July summer showroom event and the orders we’ve received so far.” Concludes Julian: “Clearly customers still have budget to spend and are already looking ahead, wanting to buy earlier for next year, with Spring/Summer 2027 shaping up well. “With so much newness and diversity across our ranges, we’re really looking forward to Autumn Fair and to welcoming both existing and new customers to our stand in Hall 7.”

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . PLUSH
It’s soft, it’s cuddly, it’s got the ooh/aah factor and, best of all, it appeals to all ages and all life stages. Welcome to the world of plush, with leading suppliers revealing what’s trending in a marketplace that’s going from strength to strength.

Emotional Connection
I
n the past year, the plush market has grown exponentially, with companies elevating the category to the next level. “After 21 years in the plush industry, one thing we’ve learned is that people don’t just buy soft toys, they buy the smile they bring,” says director Jo Holland at Jomanda. “This year we’re seeing a real appetite for plush with personality. Quirky characters, collectable keyrings and coastal-inspired designs are proving incredibly popular, and it’s why we’ve expanded our sea life collection and launched our new plush keyring range. We’ve also had fun introducing Cone Coo, inspired by the famous traffic cones and the incredible spirit of the Tartan Army. It’s exactly the sort of character that gets people talking, smiling and sharing, proving that plush can capture a moment in popular culture just as much as it can offer comfort. We’ve always believed that the best soft toys are the ones people simply can’t put down,” adds Jo.
Plush can often be a lifeline, connecting with both love and loss, as well as helping people of all ages to get through periods of anxiety. “The continued increase of kidult consumers has become a vital trend in the plush market,” says Lauren Parr, social media and marketing at Keel Toys. “We recognise that soft toys are a source of comfort and escapism for many young adults trying to navigate themselves through difficult times. The new Keeleco Enchanted World collection are cute toys for kidults, with all 12 friends covered in a luxurious eco polyester to give the most wonderful hugs for someone of any age. The characters are designed to invite imagination and they feel as though they come alive in your hands. They’re there in difficult times, soothing feelings of anxiety, loneliness and uncertainty, and which is why giving someone a soft toy can be an incredibly thoughtful and meaningful gesture. Equally, everyone feels joy when they receive a cuddly toy.” Nici Robinson, founder of Blue Bear & Co. and co-founder, Thumbs Up for Charlie, adds: “As both a therapist and the founder of Blue Bear & Co., inspired by my own experience of loss, I’ve seen first-hand the powerful role comfort objects can play throughout life’s most difficult moments. We’re increasingly seeing plush move beyond the nursery and into hospitals, hospices, care settings and bereavement support, where emotional wellbeing is just as important as the gift itself. I believe the future of plush lies in products that combine emotional connection with thoughtful design, giving retailers something truly meaningful to offer their customers.” Nici continues: “We’re seeing a real shift towards plush with purpose. Consumers are increasingly looking for gifts that create an emotional connection rather than simply being another soft toy. At Blue Bear & Co., every bear has been designed to support all life’s moments, whether that’s celebrating a new arrival, supporting someone through illness, marking a milestone or remembering someone special. Our flagship Brown Bear combines a re-recordable voice, scent and heartbeat, transforming plush into a meaningful keepsake that families treasure for years.” She believes that people want to give something that lasts beyond the moment it’s opened. “Plush offers comfort, nostalgia and connection, but when it’s thoughtfully designed with meaning behind it, it becomes far more than a gift. It becomes something that helps people feel close to those they love, creating lasting memories through every stage of life.”
“Today’s consumers are drawn to plush that has a strong identity and purpose,” states Molly Bowles, marketing manager of Noodoll. “We’re seeing a continued demand for plush that offers more than just a product. Consumers are looking for characters with personality, storytelling and emotional connection, with plush becoming a way for people of all ages to express themselves, collect meaningful characters and bring a little joy

into their everyday lives.” Explains Molly: “Our Ricespud characters are designed to become lifelong companions, with each character having its own personality and story. This year we’ve continued to expand our collections with new seasonal characters and designs, while focusing on the idea of creating ‘friends to keep’ rather than disposable products.”

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . PLUSH Below: Plush from GOSH!

With sustainability becoming increasingly important within the plush sector, Molly highlights: “We’re proud to encourage customers to cherish their plush for longer through our Noodoll Surgery initiative, where anyone can send their Noodoll friend back to us for free repair, helping to extend the life of each character.” At Wrendale Designs, trade show and marketing associate, Katrina Foster, says: “Character-led plush continues to perform strongly, particularly when it's based on well-loved designs that consumers already have an emotional connection with. We're also seeing demand for larger statement pieces, and it’s why, this year, we've expanded our range with four giant and super-sized versions of some of our most popular characters. These larger formats create even more of a 'wow' factor and make memorable gifts and keepsakes.” Posh Paws’ marketing manager, Steven Russell, says that collectability and fandom have been major growth drivers for the company this year, particularly among teenagers and young adults. “We’ve seen significant growth across our nostalgic and retro brands, including Swizzels Love Hearts, Powerpuff Girls, Mr Bean, Bullseye and Iron Maiden,” he confirms. He points out that social media has a major influence on all toy categories, plush in particular, with TikTok driving huge sales for the hottest, viral trends. “We’ve been able to react quickly to these by building our own IPs, such as our Cuddly Capybaras,
QuackPack Ducks and Korean-inspired Kawaii Kuties plush toys and collectables. They’re trend-focused and have quickly built their own fanbases.” Steven says that what makes today’s plush so irresistible to gift givers is that it has always been one of the strongest toy categories. “However, it has quickly grown from being just traditional cuddly toys to expanding into collectables. These range from blind boxes and surprise capsules that are massive right now, to bag clips that young adults are driving sales for and seeing as fashion statements. They range from Mr Bean and Powerpuff Girls to gifting plush such as our Swizzels Love Hearts that feature cute characters with fun, heartfelt and sentimental messages.” Adds Steven: “Meanwhile, the nostalgia and collectability with plush for older audiences, through retro and classic
products that they can personalise, collect and take everywhere,” she points out. “Our recent launch of a bright, cheery tribe of creatures from Roamies encourages impulse purchases and repeat collecting. “Plus, with the ever-growing popularity of character-led products, plush continues to be a trusted purchase for gift givers offering comfort, nostalgia and a lasting keepsake.” Robyn Sweeney, Allied Imports/GOSH!’s ecommerce & marketing manager, concurs that the plush category has grown beyond traditional children’s toys, with soft toys

licenses, are driving sales in popculture specialists. The comfort and play value that kids get from plush toys will always be there and it’s what makes these toys irresistible in-store.” Enesco’s senior marketing manager, Aylish Ellwood, agrees that one of the strongest trends in plush is backpack clips, particularly character-based designs, with distinct personalities, sensory textures and products with emotional connection and storytelling. “Consumers want affordable

becoming thoughtful gifts for all ages. “Today’s shoppers want characters with personality, great design and quality as well as value,” she comments. “Food-inspired characters are one of the most exciting new trends in gifting, combining nostalgia, humour and personality in a way that appeals across generations. Our Foodies collection, which will be launching later this year, captures that playful spirit, turning everyday favourites into lovable characters people want to gift, collect and keep.” PMC’s Amy-Ann Birchall says that plush gifts can quickly become a child’s best friend. “They will be cherished for a lifetime, so they’re a perfect way to commemorate a special occasion. We’ve seen a rise in popularity in animal themed plush, and not

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . PLUSH just for babies and children. After all, who doesn’t love a cute cuddly animal, especially when it’s personalised, which adds that extra special touch.” Comments Katy Rugman, product & marketing director at The Puppet Company’s Wilberry soft toys division: “Children have, and will always have, an affinity for plush as a comfort, a friend and a source of joy. Currently, this appeal extends more and more to kidults, adults and older generations. We’ve seen this trend in particular with our Wilberry Minis - small, soft plush toys - with the materials that make up the plush itself also continuing to improve, with a quality and softness that surpasses expectations. This is especially notable with our Wilberry Jungle Friends and Wilberry Water Wonders.” Adds Katy, “The plush sector is also continuing to evolve. From our realistically printed Natural History Museum Dinosaur Plush to our Wilberry Knitted Dinosaurs, there are plush offerings for everyone, and while some are seasonal, many are ideal for year-round gifting.” Seasonal plush too, continues to grow in popularity, says Katy. “Our upcoming Bunnies in a Basket makes a lovely Easter gift as the bunnies come with their own tablecloth and follow on from our recent Teddy Bears’ Picnic playset. We also have a new Wilberry Dressed Bear in Tartan Pyjamas featuring a miniature bear that lives in the bear’s pocket.” For retailers, plush remains a timeless, ageless, innovative category offering a wealth of choice from a myriad of established soft toy companies. With Christmas gifting on the horizon, plush is sure to be an impulse-buy that gift givers won’t be able to resist!

Character Plush Everyone can remember a soft toy that was a childhood favourite – an adored, cuddly plush item that was a friend and a comforter as they grew up. “Both collectability and the growing kidult trend continue to be huge drivers in the plush market, with shoppers looking for character-led plush that sparks nostalgia as well as joy,” says Zara Grindrod, brand, international & new business director, at Rainbow Designs. “We’re seeing people of all ages enjoying building collections, whether that's favourite childhood characters or discovering something completely new. Our Mr. Men and Little Miss collection brings those much-loved classic characters to life in super-soft plush for gifting and collecting alike. In addition, our new Pembe the Pink Cat range ticks both the collectability and kidult boxes. The range, inspired by the Giphy sensation, offers super cute plush adorned with positive affirmations for all ages and occasions.” (See pages 43-45 for more about Pembe). Alongside these ranges, is Rainbow’s new Cutydoos collection. “As well as the ever-popular core range, we have seasonal collections for Spring, Halloween and Christmas,” highlights Zara. “Seasonal gifting is a growing trend, popular with both retailers and gift buyers, offering even more opportunities to find the perfect plush for occasions throughout the year.” Below: Maylin from Charlie Bears’ Signature collection for 2026.

Fundraising Plush For ChrisCross Designs, one of the company’s two licensed plush ranges is currently helping to raise money for charity. The license ties in with founder Christine Nicholl’s passion and lifelong love for cats, seeing her jump at the opportunity to work with Cats Protection. “It was such a pleasure to develop these adorable cats with so much appeal,” she comments. They’ve been designed to the highest quality standards, in supersoft plush with fine embroidered features, with the collection including plushies and keyrings in black and white, along with a black shoulder bag. “Every sale will help generate funds for the Cats Protection charity while appealing to cat lovers Inset: ChrisCross Designs. across the country,” says Christine. She asked the Rolling Stones to take their trainers off at London’s luxury Savoy hotel just after its £multimillion refurbishment (“they were charming”) and got stuck in the hotel’s antique lift with the Kings of Leon. (She was a huge fan!). Meet Amy Hogarth, the founder of home fragrance brand CAHM, and winner of The Greats Best Newcomer Award in May, who explained to PG&H how and why she pivoted from hospitality and corporate travel to home fragrance and, more recently, gift retail.
espite a varied career, (to include working in her local fish and chip shops in Whitby from the age of 13), it was probably written in the stars that Amy Hogarth - founder of home fragrance and well-being brand, CAHM, headquartered at the brand’s flagship store in Farsley, West Yorkshire – was going to follow in the family’s footsteps. She comes from a long line of retailers – her grandfather bought the historic Agar’s furniture, carpets and soft furnishing store in Whitby – founded in 1812 - back in the 1960s, where he was subsequently joined by his son and daughter (Amy’s mum) who successfully continued the business until retirement. Additionally, her great-great grandmother founded the famous Magpie Café on Whitby’s seafront. Having graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Human Geography, followed by a year spent travelling - where her achievements included helping to build a school in Uganda - Amy eventually returned to the UK where she spent the next three years in customer facing roles at the luxury 5* Savoy hotel, a job she loved. A sales role in corporate travel followed, but it took the pandemic to prompt her to reassess her life and find the courage to discover a path that, PROGRESSIVE

today, clearly makes her very happy. “During the pandemic, I was among those who suffered from anxiety,” she explains. “CAHM – which incorporates my initials AH - was founded in 2020 on my kitchen table during lockdown. Initially I was pouring candles to bring me calm at a stressful time. Today, we create products people love that share a positive mental health message and bring other people some calm all over the world.” Initially, Amy, who describes herself as “absolutely a people person”, sold candles to friends and family, with their response so positive that she began selling them at local farmers markets. Trade shows were the next step, with Amy’s first one being the now defunct British Craft Trade Fair (BCTF) in Harrogate where she was runner-up in the Best Newcomer category. In the ensuing years, stands at Home & Gift, Spring Fair, Autumn Fair, Top Drawer, Scotland’s Trade Fair and, more recently, shows overseas in Tokyo and New York have followed. Today, her home fragrance and wellbeing company specialises in diffusers, candles and wax melts, alongside hand and body, bath salts and aromatherapy ranges, with everything handmade by a small, dedicated team in Farsley.

RETAILER FACE TO FACE: CAHM She opened her shop at the award-winning Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, almost two years ago and has never looked back. “It was a tremendously important step for us,” she recalls. “We were working from an industrial estate in Shipley when we were offered the outlet at the Mills and the shop has been a real asset to the trade side of the business. As a retailer, we understand what our trade customers are experiencing on the high street. We can see things from their point of view and understand what is important to them, allowing us to constantly improve our trade customer experience.” Amy has created a welcoming, calm space with soft music playing in the background and a varied and interesting mix of beautiful, thoughtfully sourced products. Aside from showcasing her own range throughout the store, Amy also curates products from a wide array of other UK independent brands including jewellery from Formation Jewellery Co. (“our best sellers by far”), bags and socks from ROKA, cards from Sister Paper Co., stationery from Onneke and books from Fox Under the Moon. There’s a men’s gifting corner too, with a collection of men’s toiletries from Capt. Fawcett’s, and gift-led confectionery from Coco Pzazz.
“Our store is a curation of CAHM products alongside other amazing independent brands,” says Amy. “I choose brands with good vibes, from good people. I love stocking beautiful products from industry friends. For example, I’m proud that I know all the designers of the greeting cards that we stock personally, which includes my talented mum, who paints with oils and creates beautiful cards and prints.” Amy says that while she loves showcasing the brands that she knows and trusts, it’s also important to have newness in store for regular customers. “Even though we were exhibiting at July’s Harrogate Home & Gift, I enjoyed experiencing the show with my retail buyer’s hat on, placing orders. It’s always exciting to discover beautiful new things to bring back to Yorkshire.”
Is there a synergy between the retail and hospitality companies at Sunny Bank Mills? “Oh yes,” says Amy. “Most of the hospitality outlets are fragranced by CAHM. We’re very lucky to have an onsite wine bar, brewery and taproom, and fantastic bakery, all of whom we collaborate with.” Challenges centre around time and manpower, with Amy about to make her first full-time appointment to strengthen the creative team and lighten the load for herself so that she can focus on expanding both the retail and wholesale sides of the business. “It’s been such an exciting year,” states Amy. “Thanks to the British Allied Trades Federation, the BATF, the umbrella organisation that includes the Home & Gift Association, formerly the Giftware Association, I’ve been out to the Hong Kong Print & Packaging Show, as well as exhibiting at Interior Lifestyle Tokyo in June, and Shoppe Object in New York in August. The shows have helped to give CAHM a much higher profile internationally.” So, what does she see as the secret of her success? “Starting off at my kitchen table, the business has grown organically over the past six years,” she states. “I never miss an opportunity to learn. I surround myself with people one level ahead of me. I ask questions and I invest in myself.” She continued: “I went back to university and enlisted in the Help to Grow management course which was incredibly useful. I have found having a mentor very valuable, someone who challenges me and pushes me to grow. I listen to all feedback, but I have a clear vision of what I want my business to be, and I hold that at the heart of everything we do. My advice to other upcoming entrepreneurs would be to stay true to yourself and your values. Your customers will find you.” PROGRESSIVE

Winning A Greats Award When CAHM was announced as the winner of The Greats Best Newcomer award, Amy said she couldn’t believe it. “We were up against some strong contenders, so we were not expecting to win. I was absolutely over the moon to hear CAHM’s name announced.” A bonus on the night was that her cousin, artist and greeting card publisher and retailer Jessica Hogarth, was at The Gift Awards too, shortlisted in the Gift of the Year’s Best Heritage Gift Product category for the Christmas at Blenheim Palace Collection by Jessica Hogarth from Temple Island Collection. (It was highly commended). “We’re extremely close, so my fingers were crossed for her, as much as her fingers were crossed for me,” reveals Amy. “We’re lucky to have each other on our business journeys”.

HOME & GIFT ASSOCIATION
Gemma Sault, managing director of the Home & Gift Association (HGA) looks back at her first 12 months in the role.
One Year On T
welve months ago, I stepped into the role of managing director of The Giftware Association with a simple belief: our industry deserves a stronger voice, greater visibility and an Association that truly reflects the businesses it serves. What a year it’s been! In that time, I have listened, challenged, built new partnerships, launched new initiatives and, most significantly, evolved into the Home & Gift Association, a name that better reflects the breadth, energy and ambition of the businesses we represent. It has been a year of change, but more importantly, it has been a year of purpose. Above: A recent committee meeting at the HGA. Below: Gemma with Amanda Fergusson, ceo of the Greeting Card Association, going into a Genesis Initiative meeting.
More Than a Rebrand When we began discussing the future of the Association, it became clear that while The Giftware Association had a proud history and strong reputation, our name no longer captured the full scope of the modern industry we support. Our members are not just gift companies. Our members span homeware, giftware, stationery, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, licensing and design. They create products that fill our homes, mark life’s celebrations, inspire creativity and connect people through meaningful purchases. The transition to the Home & Gift Association was not simply a change of logo or colour palette; it was a clear statement that we are evolving with our sector, broadening our reach and championing every business across the home, gift, stationery and lifestyle markets. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Members, partners and industry stakeholders have embraced the new identity because it better reflects the modern marketplace and the exciting opportunities ahead. We exist to represent our industry, support our community and drive growth. PROGRESSIVE

Building a Stronger Industry Voice One of my biggest priorities over the last year has been advocacy. For too long, our industry has often been overlooked despite its enormous contribution to the UK economy, employment and high streets. The truth is simple: our sector matters. The products our industry creates generate joy, celebrate milestones, support communities and drive billions of £pounds of economic activity. Every independent gift shop, every homeware retailer, every designer, maker and supplier contributes to an ecosystem that supports thousands of jobs across the country. Yet many of those businesses continue to face significant challenges. Rising costs. Business rates. Increasing regulatory pressures. Competition from overseas sellers operating under different standards. Pressure on the high street. Changing consumer behaviour. These are not isolated issues. They affect businesses across our entire sector. That is why we have increased our engagement with industry leaders, MPs, other trade associations and policymakers, focusing on issues such as business rates, fair competition, support for UK manufacturing, trade show accessibility, retail pressures and creating a level playing field for British businesses.

HOME & GIFT ASSOCIATION
Launching Industry Champions One initiative I am particularly proud of is our Industry Champions programme. Our industry is full of brilliant people with decades of experience, expertise and passion. Yet, too often, those voices are fragmented. Industry Champions brings together retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, suppliers and thought leaders to discuss the issues affecting our sector and help shape future priorities, from fair trading and mentoring to education, trade shows and government engagement. The programme is helping us move from representing our members to actively amplifying their voices. Because nobody understands the challenges and opportunities facing our sector better than the people living them every day.
support events, networking and industry connections because collaboration has never been more important. Whether through major exhibitions, mentoring, roundtables or community initiatives, our goal is simple: to make sure businesses feel connected, supported and part of something bigger.
Looking Forward The next 12 months are about building on the foundations we have put in place. We will continue to: • Advocate for fairer trading conditions and better support for businesses. • Strengthen relationships with government and policymakers. • Grow the Industry Champions programme. • Expand the Buyers Circle. • Increase industry visibility through PR and media activity. • Deliver more networking, education and mentoring opportunities. • Support retailers, suppliers, manufacturers and wholesalers through every stage of their journey. • Champion British creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Supporting Buyers Through the Buyers Circle A Personal Thank You Another major milestone has been the creation of the Buyers Circle. Buyers are among the busiest people in our industry. They are expected to predict trends, understand consumers, manage budgets, build ranges, visit trade shows, analyse performance and make commercial decisions that can determine the success of a business. Yet there are surprisingly few initiatives designed specifically to support them. That’s why we launched the Buyers Circle as a free industry resource, providing education, networking and support for both established and emerging buyers, while helping encourage the next generation of buying professionals entering the sector. If suppliers are the heartbeat of our industry, buyers are the circulatory system that keeps everything moving. Supporting them ultimately supports everyone.
As I reflect on my first year as managing director, I feel incredibly proud, but even more grateful. Grateful to our members for your trust. Grateful to our Board, National Committee and Industry Champions for your guidance and support. Grateful to our partners who share our vision. And grateful to the thousands of people who make this industry such a vibrant, creative and resilient community. The home and gift industry is about far more than products; it’s about people. The retailers opening their doors every morning. The designer sketching a new idea. The supplier launching a new collection. The buyer searching for the next bestseller. The entrepreneur taking a leap of faith. The family business passing knowledge from one generation to the next.
These are the people we represent. These are the people we champion. After 12 months in this role, I am more convinced than ever that our industry deserves to be celebrated, supported and heard. We can’t whisper about our industry, we have to shout it from the rooftops. The first year has been all about listening and learning. The next chapter will be even better. Top: Left to right: The HGA’s deputy chair Mark Jones, Gemma Sault (centre) and chair Stephen Illingworth. Above: From left to right: Gemma Sault, Faire’s UK general manager Charlotte Broadbent and HGA member Therese Oertenblad. Below: Gemma Sault, managing director of The Home & Gift Association.
A Call to Action Championing Connections Throughout my career, I have always believed that relationships remain one of the greatest assets in business. Technology has transformed how we work, but people still buy from people. Trade shows remain critical to our sector because they create opportunities that simply cannot be replicated through a screen. They allow brands to be discovered, partnerships to form and ideas to flourish. As an Association, we will continue to
My first year as managing director has reinforced one belief above all others: our industry is stronger when it works together. The rebrand to the Home & Gift Association has given us a platform that better reflects who we are and who we represent. The launch of Industry Champions and the Buyers Circle has created new ways to support, engage and amplify our community. Our advocacy work is giving the sector a louder, clearer voice. But this is only the beginning. The next chapter is about ensuring the value our sector creates economically, creatively and socially is recognised, respected and represented. It is a significant economic force, a powerhouse of creativity and innovation, and a community of incredible people who deserve to be championed. Together, we will continue to raise our voice, support one another and demonstrate exactly why the home and gift industry is one of Britain's greatest business success stories. The future of our industry will not be shaped by a single organisation, business or individual. It will be shaped by all of us. And I couldn't be more excited to be part of that journey.

Pembe the Pink Cat is a smash hit on GIPHY with over 3.3 billion downloads. With new GIFs frequently released, it’s a figure that’s growing massively on a daily basis. As a roll out of licensed giftware hits the shelves this Autumn, Start Licensing’s Ian Downes explains more about Pembe’s huge appeal and what makes the brand such a perfect fit for gift companies.

f you haven’t heard of Pembe the Pink Cat you soon will. The brand has inspired a licensing programme that’s picking up momentum in the UK and internationally, plus, given the look, feel and theming of Pembe the Pink Cat, gifting and gift products are a core component of the programme, says Start Licensing’s founder Ian Downes. “Pembe the Pink Cat is a character brand with a focus on positive affirmations and engaging themes,” he explains, “with the brand inspiring a licensing programme that’s picking up momentum in the UK and internationally. It encourages people to be positive, share their emotions and celebrate friendship.” Current licensing partners include Rainbow Designs, which has created a range of supercute plush toys and plush accessories, to include keychains and collectable figurines; Warmies, which has developed huggable Pembe the Pink Cat microwaveable plush, and Blueprint Collections, which has
introduced a Pembe the Pink Cat range featuring stationery, accessories, lunchware and drinkware. The company says that the cuteness of the character, as well as the Kawaii feel, lends itself perfectly to the current trends in the market. “Our category is predominantly bought by tween/teen girls, so the gender and demographic positioning are a perfect match for us,” says Blueprint’s managing PROGRESSIVE

director, Lisa Shand. “The creator, Sertan, has a great eye for design and can see immediately how his creative will work on each product.” Licensing partnerships also extend beyond the gift category into areas such as apparel and publishing. For example, Bonnier Books’ imprint, Studio Press, is bringing out a cute colouring book for Autumn, while apparel partners, TDP Aykroyd, are currently presenting their designs to retailers. “Their design work is on trend for the clothing market and well timed to capitalise on the growing love for all things Kawaii,” highlights Ian, who adds that, across the board, retailers are really buying into the brand, with listings in Miniso and Cards Galore already secured. “With UK licensees such as Rainbow Designs, Warmies and Blueprint Collections on board we know we have licensing partners who are proactive, creative and agile working with us,” he continues. “These are companies that are well established in

IN PROFILE: PEMBE THE PINK CAT the gift trade and rightly regarded as category experts. It’s an exciting time for the brand and it’s good to see how well consumers have embraced Pembe the Pink Cat and the positive messaging that the brand delivers.” He emphasises that Pembe is an ideal fit for gifts and gifting. “The style guide developed for Pembe the Pink Cat is an extensive one, with design options covering key gifting occasions that include Christmas, Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. The brand is also on trend with regards to super cute characters, collectability and fan driven brands.” Beyond the UK, there is also significant international pick up for Pembe with a host of licensing partners in a broad range of territories to include the United States, Germany, France and Spain. Clearly, it’s an exciting time for Pembe, with consumers embracing the brand and the positive messaging that Pembe the Pink Cat delivers. “We are therefore keen to add additional UK licensees and licensed products to the programme with an obvious one being greetings cards,” Ian emphasises. “The brand is a natural for this category with the style guide well suited to cards while, in gifting, there are opportunities for companies to dovetail with Rainbow Designs and Blueprint Collections. “The fact that Pembe the Pink Cat’s creator, Sertan Christoffersen, is involved in the licensing programme on a daily basis is a real advantage. He is able to help licensees and retailers with creative direction and contribute proactively to the design process, with a genuine commitment and investment in design from him.
“All of this highlights that Pembe the Pink Cat is a brand that is being managed in a proactive way, with a flexibility that reflects shifts in design. This quick to react approach is also applied to the GIFs which are being regularly developed. They reflect current trends and moods but are also underpinned by core themes that include friendship,
Easter, Christmas and positivity. Therefore, looking ahead, with so much investment and support, both licensees and retailers should have no trouble in finding appropriate and inspirational design ideas.”
Pembe the Pink Cat: The Lowdown “Pembe’s appearance tells their story before any words are needed,” explains Pembe the Pink Cat’s Danish creator, Sertan Christoffersen, who highlights that Pembe is gender neutral. “Pembe is pink and chubby precisely because these are qualities that are not always celebrated. There are no pink cats in nature, so Pembe is unmistakably the odd one out - but they are completely comfortable in their own skin,” he points out. “They don’t try to become less pink, take up less space or change themselves to belong.” Sertan adds that the connection between appearance and meaning was fundamental to the design. “Pembe’s rounded form, unapologetic colour and gentle expression embody softness, difference and self-acceptance. The design is intentionally simple and instantly recognisable, but it is not simply about looking cute. Pembe’s appearance tells their story before any words are needed - being different is not something to correct or overcome. It can be embraced and celebrated. Pembe have accepted themselves exactly as they are and, through that quiet confidence, invites everyone else to do the same.” PROGRESSIVE

He adds that Pembe is particularly meaningful as a gift because “they represent something much bigger than the physical object. Pembe is a symbol of being truly yourself and a celebration of individuality, an affirmation that says, ‘Hey you, be you. You are enough exactly as you are.’ “We are living through a moment when many people no longer want to hide the gentler, stranger or more vulnerable parts of themselves simply to fit in. Pembe gives those qualities a visible and joyful identity. I see Pembe as an icon for that movement one that celebrates softness as strength and difference as something to show rather than conceal. Giving someone Pembe can therefore communicate acceptance, encouragement and recognition. It says, ‘I see who you are and I celebrate you.’ That emotional message makes Pembe naturally powerful within gifting, because the most meaningful gifts express what we sometimes struggle to put into words.”

ot on the heels of receiving the 2026 King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade, DCUK will be showcasing the company’s licensed National Garden Scheme collection as part of its Autumn/Winter offering at Autumn Fair next month. Inspired by the thousands of gardeners who open their garden gates each year, the hand-carved National Garden Scheme Ducklings have been crafted from bamboo root and individually painted by hand, dressed in lavender and sage green gardening outfits. With every sale, they’re helping to raise money for the charities the National Garden Scheme supports. Craig Wensley, owner of DCUK, says that the partnership is a natural fit within the DCUK portfolio, reflecting the brand’s focus on showcasing craftsmanship, thoughtful gifting and character-led storytelling. "Licensing for DCUK is about telling new stories through our brand and staying true to what our customers already love,” explains Craig. “The success of our Aardman Collection has shown what's possible when two like-minded brands team up and that's how we approached our partnership with

1 2 1: Always By My Side Enesco has introduced a new sculpture, Forever Friends by Willow Tree, a beautifully hand-painted two-figure piece of young girls celebrating the enduring bonds of friendship and sisterhood. Sculpted by artist Susan Lordi, the two pieces capture the nostalgic warmth of shared experiences with girlfriends or sisters – from long talks and sleepovers to hours of doing nothing together. The two figures are reclining, as if in conversation, and can be arranged in different ways to communicate their relationship, with the accompanying sentiment ‘Always by my side’. Together, the figures translate universal memories with a forever friend, into a tangible, high-quality keepsake. Enesco T: 01228 404022 E: uksales@enesco.co.uk W: www.enesco.co.uk
