LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Welcome to the 34th annual International Licensing Awards, where we gather to celebrate the innovation and accomplishment of our colleagues. This year is particularly special because it marks the beginning of a period of renewed focus and momentum for Licensing International, embodied by our new brand identity. One of the primary goals of our brand refresh is to ensure that our organization is a true reflection of the industry we serve – elevated, aspirational and inclusive. All of tonight’s honorees embody these characteristics, which is why I’m so proud that our new brand identity will serve as the backdrop as we shine the spotlight on the best and the brightest in our incredible industry. Tonight, 23 organizations will walk home with the industry’s most prestigious award, but it is no small feat to be among the slate of nominees this evening, who were selected from more than 600 entries from around the globe. We’ll also celebrate the legendary careers of our Hall of Fame inductees Pam Lifford and Michael Stone, and toast the future with our Rising Stars. I have attended this event many times in my years in licensing, but tonight is the first time that I do so as the President of Licensing International. As our industry continues to evolve and adapt, my ambition is that Licensing International will be an indispensable resource at every turn, helping you evolve, adapt and grow as well. Congratulations to all of tonight’s honorees and everyone in this room – your creativity and innovation has raised the bar for excellence. Maura Regan President Licensing International

2019 – AN AWARDS YEAR LIKE NO OTHER!

S

ince 1986, when industry leaders first gathered to celebrate the creativity and accomplishments of their colleagues, the International Licensing Awards have been a highlight of the year for the global licensing community.

Over the last three decades, the Awards have continually evolved alongside the industry they honor, serving not only to showcase exceptional work, but also as a time capsule of licensing through the years. This year, for the first time in the Awards’ 33-year history, submissions and judging were conducted fully online, making a process that was once limited by geography and time zones easily accessible to entrants and judges anywhere in the world. Not only did the pool of expert judges expand significantly (this year the panel included close to 150 executives from 18 countries), but the submissions also reflected the diversity and innovation of our industry like never before.

12

12-13 LIMA Editorial PROCESS_muk.qxp_Layout 1 03/05/2019 16:48 Page 13

THE AWARDS PROCESS The judges, who were nominated by Licensing International Managing Directors and representatives from around the world, had three weeks to review the more than 600 entries received this year. Judges were assigned specific groups of awards. For example, judges from the retail sector voted on the Product and Brand categories (but not the retail categories, of course). The nominees – or finalists – in each category were determined by the cumulative score of all judges of that category. The LIMA membership then weighed in, with a global vote of the finalists to help determine the winner of each category. The winner of the Community Choice Award was chosen from among all the year’s 154 nominees through an online vote open to everyone in the global licensing community, thereby representing the most popular entry across all categories for the year. The International Licensing Awards truly are one of the most prestigious, global honors in our industry. Congratulations are due not just to the winners this evening, but to all the nominees, who set the bar for excellence in the years to come. A special thank you to all the executives who spent their time and energy judging this year’s awards – your hard work and dedication is what makes our industry great!

AN INDUSTRY UNITED TO HELP CHILDREN IN NEED

Since 2004, the global licensing community has raised nearly $6.7 million to aid the important work of the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. This support comes in many forms – ads in the Tribute Book you are reading right now, participation in fund-raising events, direct donations – but the common denominator is the generosity of our incredible industry. WHAT WE’RE SUPPORTING Roughly one-third of kids around the world who are diagnosed with cancerous brain tumors do not live beyond the age of five. It is the deadliest childhood cancer, yet research for this disease is one of the most underfunded. That is why, for over a decade, the licensing industry’s charity of choice has been the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.

14

Licensing International is the only corporate sponsor of the CBTF. In fact, without the generous support of the licensing community, the CBTF would not be able to expand and continue to add more hospitals to its research team.
